What is the primary DNS server for a domain

Featured Replies

When trying to figure out who the primary DNS server is for a domain all you need to do is utilize nslookup

Find the Start of Authority (SOA) for the domain. Just type:

nslookup

set type=soa

domain.com

Example:

> set type=soa

> hosangit.com

Server: usabhsn0gnao01.na.mywiseguys.com

Address: 10.58.143.196

DNS request timed out.

timeout was 2 seconds.

Non-authoritative answer:

hosangit.com

primary name server = dal1amspdc006.thezah.com

responsible mail addr = hostmaster.thezah.com

serial = 13910

refresh = 900 (15 mins)

retry = 600 (10 mins)

expire = 86400 (1 day)

default TTL = 3600 (1 hour)

(root) nameserver = i.root-servers.net

(root) nameserver = f.root-servers.net

(root) nameserver = a.root-servers.net

(root) nameserver = h.root-servers.net

(root) nameserver = c.root-servers.net

(root) nameserver = b.root-servers.net

(root) nameserver = m.root-servers.net

(root) nameserver = d.root-servers.net

(root) nameserver = j.root-servers.net

(root) nameserver = g.root-servers.net

(root) nameserver = l.root-servers.net

(root) nameserver = k.root-servers.net

(root) nameserver = e.root-servers.net

OR another way of doing it

You could also find the Name Server(s) (NS) for the domain. Just type:

nslookup

set type=ns

domain.com[/code]

Example:

> set type=ns

> hosangit.com

Server: usabhsn0gnao01.na.mywiseguys.com

Address: 10.58.143.196

DNS request timed out.

timeout was 2 seconds.

Non-authoritative answer:
