Ever since the 2008 race which featured NASCAR throwing competition cautions every 10 laps or so to prevent tire blowouts, attendance has waned.
A race that once boasted the largest crowd of the season (250,000-plus) has in recent years been lucky to attract 40,000 to 50,000 fans in the stands.
