Only one thing comes to my mind on what it could be....

CAUSE: Long period of operation

FIX: Cooling-off periods are essential to prevent overheating.

If you look at the owners manual of any winch manufacturer they all require bursts and not constant use.  This means that if you are overheating, its because you are allowing any cool down periods.
