My List of Favorite Mac OS X Software

Featured Replies

Purchased Software

Adobe Creative Suite 3

Adobe Photoshop CS3 shipped on April 16, 2007 and includes Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Acrobat Pro, Flash, Dreamweaver, Fireworks in the standard edition -- Use Somewhat Often to edit websites

beaTunes

Cleanup your iTunes by correcting typos and it helps create some great playlists-- Don't Use Anymore, Feel I get the same thing done in iTunes

ChronoSync

There is no better file/folder sync utility for the mac -- Use Often to sync my music files to another external drive as a backup

FileMaker Pro 9 Advanced

The leader of database software for Mac and Windows -- Use Often to create databases and I had no experience on creating databases before its that easy to use

iWork '08

Apple's foot in the door for Office programs... alot of nice features but takes awhile to get used to -- Don't Use, could never get myself to switch from Microsoft Office

IOGEAR GUC232 USB to Serial Adapter

Mac's don't come with a serial port so you will need a USB to Serial adapter.. IOGEAR is awesome compared to Keyspans which broke twice -- Use Often to configure anything serial

kJams Pro

The best karaoke software compared to all karaoke software windows and mac offers. Very well done and constant updates always improving -- Use Often and highly recommend this software

Logitech Harmony Remote Software

Not a big fan of lots of remotes, so for the price these are great remote controls that you can program from your mac -- Use somewhat, once you program your remote you don't really need it

MacTheRipper

To archive your DVD movies you need a decoder and I haven't found anything as good as MacTheRipper. Look for the newest version which requires a donation -- Use to use often but don't archive movies as much anymore but if you archive movies I strongly suggest this software as your decoder software

MacWise 10.9

A very excellent terminal emulation software that works great with the IOGEAR USB to Serial adapter when I configure cisco switches through the console port -- Use Often to configure anything serial and starting to use more often for telnet

Microsoft Office 2008

Not a big fan of putting Microsoft on my Mac but you really have a tough time beating Microsoft Office for your Word Processor and for spreadsheets -- Use Often

Monopoly

Old time favorite game to pass time -- Use to use, but not really anymore

MyCoverCD

Purchased to help create cover and inserts for Audio CD's that I put together -- Tried but too many issues, currently not recommended

OmniOutliner

Used for creating, collecting and organizing information of all sorts -- don't use anymore

OmniPlan

Project Managemenet Software -- not recommended and suggest using Merlin for Project Management instead which is very very nice project management software.

Quicken 2007

Quicken seems to be the easiest to use to organize financial information. I also purchased First Edge for my business finance tracking because Intuit doesn't provide anything for the mac yet and it's not nearly as user friendly as Quicken -- For personal finance I recommend and use often

StuffIt 11

It's the Winzip equivilent for Mac and is helpful when you want to unzip or compress some files for sending through email -- Use often and recommend

Toast 8 Titanium

Purchased this software because I didn't know how to create CD's and now that I create Music CD's using iTunes and I now know how to create Burn Folders for Data CD's, not sure why I paid all this money for this software -- never use it

Roxio Popcorn

Main purpose to burn movies extracted by MacTheRipper into -- rarely use it,

VMWare Fusion

Highly recommend and prefer over Parallels and yes I have both but only use this one due to its flawless performace and how well it works with USB devices -- Use often and highlly recommend it

Data Rescue II

Recover data from your drive to an external drive -- used once and was glad I had it

Drive Genius

Optimize your drive... works well in combination with Data Rescue -- use rarely but glad when I need to use it that I have it

SuperDuper!

use alot to create a bootable backup of my entire harddrive on my external harddrive. This has proven to work and recover a drive and/or individual files -- Use often and proven to work.. highly recommend it

SuperSync 1.8

Sync your iTunes when using multiple computers. Clever idea and thought I would use it more but I don't anymore -- Tried but don't use it anymore

MegaSeg

use for DJ'ing only, still use iTunes for importing a CD and keeping my mp3's organized. Lately been playing with Traktor Scratch Pro which offers alot more features but is more CPU intensive. -- Use often and recommend it

What software do you use on your mac on a regular basis?

Most favorite software:

Firefox - use daily for internet access - fast and reliable

Quicken - Track all spending and budgets. Must have discipline to maintain on a daily/weekly basis. Track all my financial stuff. Makes doing annual taxes really easy. Can run reports and do taxes before I get 1099s and financial statements. Usually finish my tax chores in late January and file in early Feb. If I have a refund coming usually have by middle of Feb.

Microsoft office - Excel for financial spread sheets (tracking investment trends) & Word for documents and letters.

TurboTax: Have used for 15-20 years to complete and file Federal and State Taxes. I get auto shipments from Intuit around early December and load in early Jan. One thing that dispoints me is the price - $59 for Fed & State. Usually see discounts in Office Max in late Jan or early Feb for around $49. Would think that by having purchased on line one would get a discount. At $59 still a whole lot less expensive that a tax guy ($150-$200)

MacJanitor: Use daily, weekly and monthly

Techtool Pro 4 - use monthly and quarterly and semi-annual defrag.

Grab: screen snapshots etc.

Photoshop elements 4.0.- Use to print downloaded & scanned photos. Learning more each time I snoop around and experiment.

Intuit's "Emergency Records Organization" v2.0. Really great to keep and change those valuable bits of information. Print out and keep handy for wife or me to use. Carry one when we travel.

Lots more but those are the one's I use most or feel most important.

I need to add Araxis Merge

When you need to compare two files (typically text or html) this does a wonderful job at it (while I was using the demo). If I begin comparing files alot again, I will more then likely go ahead and purchase this product. I am having hesitation because of the large amount of money they want for the product I am not sure constitutes the features.
