GM 14 bolt axle

Featured Replies

So its my goal to change the 10bolt rear end to the GM 14 bolt from either a 3/4 ton or 1 ton.  Per Four Wheeler the best choices are between the years of 73-96 (most of my buddies say not newer than 88 but everyone argues about those few years 89-96) but all of these come with Drum Brakes because it was cheaper to make.  As you see on every vehicle, regardless if its a 1/2 ton or 1 ton, they all come with Disc Brakes and its because of the greater stopping power and self cleaning is nice for offroad use.

Checking into adding Disc Brakes it looks pretty inexpensive

offroaddesign

  • $150 for brackets
  • $4.95 each for longer studs
  • $69/set short brake lines
  • You must source a pair of brake rotors and calipers from a '73-'87 GM 3/4-ton front axle.

Rough Stuff Specialties

  • $328 for complete kit (not sure it includes e-brake attachment)

SORD

  • $59 just brackets

Great support articles to help accomplish the task

  • Four Wheeler Magazine did a story back in 2012 on converting GM 14 bolt to Disc Brakes which you can find here. I love that they used EBC Rotors and Pads (my favorite rotors I put on everything).  Since the article is old I imagine is why they aren't using more updated brackets which have a bend in them to accommodate the calibers also blackbird custom website is no longer alive so I'm assuming they are a company in the past.  Probably use SORD or offroad design brackets.
  • Another Four Wheeler article a year earlier gives more insight on this conversion that you can find here.

I believe the best setup today is:

  1. SORD Brackets $59
  2. ORD Short Line Hoses $69/set
  3. Longer Studs $80 for 16
  4. EBC or Wildwood 4 or 6 piston calipers
  5. EBC or Wildwood Rotors

Need to figure out Calipers and Rotors
