Create a folder named Apps

Drag each app into the Apps folder while holding down Option-Command (creates alias)

Select your Applications folder and press Command-I

Select your Apps folder and press Command-I

Select the folder icon in the info window and copy it (Command-C)

Select the plain folder icon in Apps info window and paste (Command-V)

Close both windows

Drag your new Apps folder into your dock

Since the aliases will be grouped alphabetical order, you may want to rename your aliases

Media - iMovie

Media - iPhoto

Office - Excel

Office - Mail

Office - Word

Utilities - Activity

Utilities - Backup

Web - Firefox

Web - Safari
