Gearing Up for Adventure: Katie’s Overland Prep
Katie Carson, a former Oasis Overland crew member, is hitting the road again on our 14-day Nairobi to Dar es Salaam Gameparks and Zanzibar adventure. We’ll be following her journey to give you an inside look at what this overland trips is like. Her first blog kicks things off with how she’s getting prepared. Preparing for a 14 day Oasis Overland Africa trip In just a few days time I shall be setting off for Nairobi to join the Nairobi to Dar es Salaam (14 days) Gameparks and Zanzibar adventure. Here’s just a few of the things that I do to prepare for an Africa overland trip. Read the pre departure information This is sent out with your confirmation email and also can be found on the trip page. This page tells you what you need and have to bring, where the trip starts from, budgeting, visas and so much more. Flights It is always worth looking around for good deals, I usually use Skyscanner. In this instance it was cheaper to fly out of Heathrow and back in to Gatwick, a saving of nearly a £1000, so definitely worth trying different combinations! Photocopies of my passport and insurance policy (the page with the 24hr number and your policy number and provider) Visas For this trip as a British National I need to get the e-visa in advance for Kenya (the Tanzanian one I can get out on the road with the group on trip). The link to the Kenya e-visa can be found in the pre departure information. DON’T apply for this too early as it is valid for 90 days from the date of issue, so you don’t want it running out before you have used it! Once you have it issued, print it and keep with your passport. Zanzibar travel insurance Zanzibar now requires you to get their travel insurance to be able to gain entry - even when you have your own travel insurance. It’s quick and easy to do, the link can be found in the pre departure information and it costs $44 per adult. Pre departure & post trip accommodation I am flying out a few days early and so have booked the same accommodation where the trip starts from. For this trip finishing in Dar es Salaam, you have a few options - you can get the ferry back from Zanzibar to Dar es Salaam and then catch onward flights from there, or as I am doing I am getting a short flight from Zanzibar to Nairobi and then flying back to the UK, and so am staying on the island for an extra couple of nights post trip, which I have sorted independently. Packing This of course varies with individuals, but for these trips you must bring a sleeping bag and roll mat (I use a thermarest as it gives a bit more support and rolls up small to fit in your bag and truck locker), you will also need a head torch and a mini first aid kit. A car charger so that you can charge your phone on the truck, flip flops, trainers for when I go exploring, a towel, some long sleeved tops to try and prevent the pesky mozzies getting you, wet wipes for the occasion where you can’t have a shower…I can go on but we all know how to pack, and plus there is a handy list in the pre departure information! Remember you will need a backpack or soft holdall - you can’t bring a suitcase on the truck! US Dollars You will need to bring your local payment and give this to your tour leader at the start of the trip. You will also want US dollars for your visas out on the road and they can be used for any optional activities you decide to do whilst on trip. Vaccinations I always go to my local GP surgery to find out what vaccinations I need (and they can check what I have had already!). I got my yellow fever vaccination a long time ago and always keep the certificate for this in my passport. Watch this space for lots of pictures and videos on the Oasis social pages! If you are thinking of booking a trip, do it, I can’t recommend it enough and all the team can help answer any questions you may have. The next Nairobi to Dar es Salaam* overland trip leaves on 17th August 2025: BOOK TODAY *includes Serengeti & Ngorongoro Safari and Zanzibar View the full article

The Final Push To Our New Home
After a night on the Las Vegas strip, morning seemed to come earlier than normal. As we made our way out of town our minds wondered about what lay in wait for us during the 6hr journey north. Fortunately, our minds didn’t have to wonder too long. About the time we were coming down into the Amargosa Valley we noticed that the van radio turned off and the indicators in the dash started turning on and off on their own. Then all of a sudden it happened. The engine shut off and the dash lit up like a Christmas tree. The van had died. Coasting down the road, we were lucky enough to be able to roll into the parking lot of the Area 51 Alien Center and Fuel station. There I spent the better part of the next hour unloading the van, exposing the battery systems and testing the electrical, trying to locate the culprit. We were able to jump start the van but it would only run for a few minutes and then it would die again. The radio would come on and off, the door locks would lock and unlock the warning buzzer would chime and then stop. Mind you it was still doing this all on its own. I swore the van was possessed at this point. We disconnected the battery under the hood and the house batteries under the bench, removing all power from the vehicle. There we sat for the better part of 20 minutes. Full of anxiousness in the middle of nowhere hoping for a miracle. After a while we reconnected the batteries and were surprised to see that the dome lights came on bright and the door chime was dinging away. Even more so, it was like the Red Sea had parted when we turned the key and the van rumbled to life all on its own and kept on running. Was this Devine intervention or did it have something to do with the Aliens at Area 51? We let the van run for a bit and went inside the Alien center to check out this strange place. Might as well since we were there. Unfortunately I didn’t remember to take photos of the inside but let’s just say it’s an interesting place to say the least. Making our way back to the van we were relieved to see that it was still running. We cycled the key a couple times and it started like a champ every time. Not ones to look a gift horse in the mouth, we hauled butt north and tested our fate. After all, we either break down in the middle of nowhere or we stay in the middle of nowhere (where we were) and wait for it to break down. I chose forward progress, since the outcome was basically going to be the same if it did happen. Wouldn’t you know it, fate was on our side and we made it all the way to Fernley, NV without so much as a hiccup. Waking up the next morning I couldn’t help but wonder about the van and our trip the prior day. So, I grabbed the keys, turned the ignition and nothing happened but a click. So I grabbed our trusty jump pack and once again the van rumbled to life. A quick check with my multimeter and I figured out that the charging system wasn’t doing anything. Pulling the air box and serpentine belt off it was pretty clear as to why. The shaft on the alternator had an 1/8” of play and it made an unmistakable growl when you spun it around. The alternator my friends had gone the way of the dodo. A few runs to the parts store and 20 min of wrench time at the campground and we were back in business. We spent the next couple of days at the campground searching for a rental home and taking care of life maintenance things. By the end of the week we were moving into a house and getting settled in. Good thing too because that weekend we were hit by a blizzard. I guess we made it just in time, talk about perfect timing… View the full article

[motorsport] We predict the outcome of every Round 2 matchup in NASCAR's $1 million challenge
At EchoPark Speedway (Atlanta), the field of 32 was cut in half as NASCAR's five-week in-season challenge officially got underway. There are many underdogs left while big names will be forced to sit on the sidelines for the rest of the ...Keep readingView the full article

Understanding Fault and Liability in Motorcycle Accidents in California
Motorcycle accidents tend to be incredibly devastating for motorcyclists since they have little to shield them from the impact of a crash. If you were injured in a motorcycle accident, you will need to file a claim for your injuries. Since California is an at-fault state, that means the motorist who caused the crash will be responsible for paying the damages. However, it’s not as simple as it seems to recover your money. Determining Fault in a California Motorcycle […] The post Understanding Fault and Liability in Motorcycle Accidents in California appeared first on Return of the Cafe Racers. View the full article
