2027 BMW iX4 Confirmed With Over 400 Miles of Range

The all-new BMW iX4 has been caught on camera just after the German automaker accidentally confirmed its arrival for the 2027 model year last week. It's coming to America in 40 xDrive and 50 xDrive forms, offering potential buyers two range and power options, both of which are expected to greatly exceed the Tesla Model Y's EPA 327-mile range (over 400 miles is expected for the base model). According to our spies, an M60 version will also arrive with increased performance before a quad-motor M version appears with as much as 800 horsepower. As these new spy shots show, even the regular iX4 will be attractive, with the increasingly familiar Neue Klasse face, a slanted roofline, stylish new 10-spoke wheels, and a pert rear end with a subtle spoiler. Here's what to expect.

Several Performance Levels on Offer

The abovementioned leak of 2027 BMW models confirmed the xDrive 50 variant, and this is a variant that the already-revealed iX3 comes in. That means a 108kWh battery with dual electric motors producing as much as 469 horsepower and delivering up to 497 miles. The existing iX3 has already beaten its official range estimate in real-world testing, and with the more aerodynamic swooping shape of the iX4, it's quite possible that the so-called coupe SUV will be capable of going even further. The lesser xDrive 40 model will also be a dual-motor EV, but it's expected to have a smaller battery and less horsepower. Auto Express estimates that 400 hp and a range of 400 miles will be available here (and in the iX3 with the same setup). Whatever the new iX4 offers, it won't be complemented by a gas-powered X4 because BMW sees the slightly smaller X2 filling that niche.

BMW iX4 Design Looks Promising

Although still heavily clad in camouflage, the design of the Vision Neue Klasse X concept shines through, and it looks good here — perhaps even better than in the iX3. The squared wheel arches suggest a touch of off-road ability, despite the fact that 99% of buyers will do no more than hop a sidewalk with it. At the front, the lower intakes appear to have movable flaps that will help achieve those remarkable range figures, and higher up, the mask-like fascia with narrow, vertically oriented kidney grilles makes the crossover look sporty. Those new wheels also give the iX4 a touch of modern athleticism, while at the rear, it appears that the iX4 will not take on the full-width lightbar of its iX3 sibling. The elongated L-shaped taillights call to mind the X6 that inspired this coupe crossover segment and help set the vehicle apart from similarly sweptback crossovers like the Model Y. BMW's leak didn't confirm when the iX4 would arrive, but as a 2027 model, we know its reveal must be imminent, with a launch expected in the second half of this year.
