BMW’s Upcoming Plans

BMW’s future lineup came into sharper focus last week when the brand’s US online shop accidentally listed several upcoming models ahead of schedule. The leak points to a handful of new vehicles set to arrive for the 2027 model year.

One of the big reveals: the next-generation BMW X5. That confirms BMW’s midsize SUV is getting a full redesign soon.

A separate leak from a trusted insider on the Bimmer Post forum just added more detail. This post lays out early specs and a rough timeline for the next X5, giving us a clearer idea of what BMW has in store for one of its most important SUVs.

Early X5 Specs and Timeline

According to the leak, the next-gen X5 (codenamed G65) is set to start production in August 2026 and run until July 2035. At launch, expect the X5 40 xDrive for global markets, plus a 40d xDrive diesel for regions outside the US.

The new X5 is slightly larger than the current, outgoing G05 model. Leaked specs show it stretches to 196.6 inches long – about 2.3 inches more than before. The wheelbase also gets a 2.4-inch bump, now at 119.5 inches. It sits a little lower at 68.9 inches tall and is just a hair narrower at 78.7 inches wide (without mirrors).

Ground clearance goes up to 8.9 inches – about half an inch more than the outgoing model. Cargo space is rated at 23.1 cubic feet behind the rear seats, or 65.3 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. That’s a slight change from before, but nothing dramatic.

Under the hood, the X5 40 xDrive gets an updated B58 3.0-liter turbo inline-six. Output is pegged at 394 horsepower and 398 lb-ft of torque, with a mild-hybrid system adding about 17 hp and 148 lb-ft from its integrated electric motor.

More variants are on the way after launch. By December 2026, BMW plans to add the US-market X5 40, plus plug-in hybrids like the 50e xDrive and M60e xDrive, and a fully electric iX5 60 xDrive. Down the line, expect the M60 xDrive performance model and more electric options, including the iX5 50 xDrive and iX5 M70 xDrive.

The Bigger Picture for BMW’s Future Lineup

Specs and timelines aside, the leak leaves many unanswered questions about the new X5. But this SUV is just one part of BMW’s bigger product push. That earlier accidental leak hinted at a wave of new and updated models – both gas and electric – including an all-wheel-drive M2, the rumored M350, and several electric crossovers built on BMW’s Neue Klasse platform.

If the leaked timeline holds up, the next-gen X5 could break cover in the coming months. For now, these early details give us a first look at what’s next for one of BMW’s most recognizable SUVs.
