Apple CarPlay will soon receive one of its most important updates yet with the upcoming iOS 26.4 release, which is expected to be pushed to compatible iPhones across the world this spring.
For now, the first beta has already been made available to developers on February 18, followed by the first public beta on February 20. The new update adds plenty of new features to the iPhone, including for CarPlay users.
This is big news for drivers who own iPhones as they are getting access for the first time through the CarPlay system to other intelligent voice assistants than Siri, namely third-party AI services like Open AI's ChatGPT, Google's Gemini and Anthropic's Claude.
How Will It Work?
These voice-based chatbots will offer hands-free interactions directly through the CarPlay interface, with Apple said to introduce a new, customizable voice control screen designed specifically to provide vehicle-optimized chatbot experiences.
According to Money Control, apps can display simple, vehicle-optimized visual feedback during an active chatbot session to accompany spoken responses.
Mind you, the functionality will be limited on purpose, as third-party AI apps will not be allowed to control vehicle systems or iPhone settings. Additionally, there is no wake word support, i.e. no "Hey Google" for Gemini. Instead, users will still need to manually open the chatbot app before asking questions; after that, all interaction remains voice-driven.
Once the new update is live, CarPlay users can expect many app updates as AI developers start adding support.
Why This Is a Big Deal for Apple CarPlay

Opening up CarPlay to third-party voice assistants will give companies like OpenAI, Google and Anthropic direct access to Apple's in-car platform, but as you would expect, the iPhone maker is taking a cautious approach when it comes to safety and system control.
On top of that, third-party chatbot interactions must remain consistent with Apple's focus on reducing distracted driving. Still, allowing external AI chatbots in marks a significant shift for Apple as it gives CarPlay users the choice of speaking to the chatbot of their liking instead of being limited to Siri as before.
In addition to providing access to third-party AI assistants, Apple CarPlay will also support in-car video playback for select apps, including the Apple TV app. Mind you, this feature will only be available when the vehicle is parked for obvious safety reasons. This update will give passengers new entertainment options while waiting in a stationary car.
