BMW Teases 800-HP Electric M3 at the Nürburgring — Record Attempt Next?

The Ring Hears Silence

BMW recently released a video showing the all-electric M3 prototype lapping the Nürburgring in Germany while still wearing camouflage. The footage signals a new chapter for the M as it expands into high-performance EVs, while also reinforcing BMW’s long-standing partnership with the Nürburgring, where it serves as the circuit’s official vehicle partner.

The video comes with a dramatic, heart-racing soundtrack, but it’s obvious the all-electric M3 (codenamed ZA0) isn’t delivering the kind of exhaust note enthusiasts are used to. BMW has confirmed the new model will feature a quad-motor setup, and reports suggest it could produce over 800 horsepower. If that figure holds, it would surpass the 738-horsepower XM Label, currently BMW M’s most powerful production model. That's not exactly shocking in a world where high-performance EVs like the Rimac Nevera have taken the horsepower race to another level.

The Evolution of M Power

The camouflage was heavy, but hints of the Neue Klasse design language were still visible up front, where the large vertical kidney grille — which sparked polarized reactions when the M3 G80 debuted in 2020 — appears to be replaced. It continues to adopt a sedan body style, with the M4 serving as its coupe counterpart.

The next-generation M3 is expected to continue offering a combustion-powered alternative, likely in hybridized form. Reports suggest the current 3.0-liter S58 twin-turbocharged inline-six will receive electrification, which could deliver a power boost while also helping the model comply with increasingly stringent emissions regulations.

Another intriguing performance detail is that the new EV is reportedly set to feature simulated gearshifts, similar to those offered in the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N.

Aiming for Nürburgring Glory?

The newly released video offered few concrete details about the M3 ZA0, aside from the tagline, “Another year of being United by Performance.” What would be particularly interesting, however, is whether the in-development M car could challenge the production road-legal EV lap record at the Nürburgring Nordschleife. That benchmark currently belongs to the China-built Yangwang U9 Extreme, which posted a 6:59.157 lap around the Green Hell.

The electric M3 will be one of the 30 new models BMW M plans to introduce before the end of the decade. Whatever technology underpins this model is also expected to be shared with its crossover counterpart, the X3 M, with both reportedly slated to launch around 2027. While many of these upcoming models are expected to feature electrified powertrains, the Bavarian automaker has indicated it will continue offering combustion engines — including V8s — with select models still available with a manual transmission.
