The Minivan America Can’t Have (Yet)
The Mitsubishi Delica D:5 is forbidden fruit in America and most of the world. On the surface, it’s a straightforward minivan with sliding doors and actual space for people. Underneath, though, it’s built with hardware that puts many soft-road SUVs to shame: four-wheel drive, off-road modes, and even locking differentials. It’s an example showing that you don’t need a bulky crossover to get your family out of the city and onto rougher ground.
That approach still works in Japan. The Delica continues to sell well at home, and Mitsubishi is doubling down on that success. For the 2026 Tokyo Auto Salon, the company is filling its booth with a lineup of customized Delica D:5s and Delica Minis, calling it the “Delica Festival.”

The Delica Mini Goes Full Character Mode
The Delica Mini, a tall kei car that we admired in the metal during the Japan Mobility Show, is getting several show versions for Tokyo Auto Salon 2026. One of them, the Delica Mini Delimaru Festa, stands out with mascot decals and a large Delimaru figure on the roof. It’s a playful approach, but it also shows how Mitsubishi wants the Mini to be more than just another city car – it’s meant as a first step into the Delica world.
On the rugged side, the Delica Mini Ultimate Gear gets a textured coating, roof rack, grille guard, rear ladder, and a small suspension lift. Other versions add pop-up roofs, skid bars, mud flaps, and retro styling that references older Mitsubishi off-roaders. Even at this size, Mitsubishi is serious about giving the Mini real utility.

The Delica Lifestyle
Of course, the full-phat Delica D:5 gets its share of attention, with Mitsubishi showing several custom versions. The Ultimate Gear features a lifted suspension, extra body protection, and a textured finish that hides scratches. There’s also an Active Camper model built with outdoor brand LOGOS, which adds a warmer interior but keeps the same 4WD hardware. Wild Adventure versions with rally-inspired touches reinforce the Delica’s off-road credentials and connect back to Mitsubishi’s motorsport background.
Mitsubishi is even displaying the actual Triton rally truck that won the Asia Cross Country Rally in 2025, along with a Delica D:5 support vehicle used during the event. It’s a reminder that the Delica’s adventure branding isn’t purely cosmetic.
Everything will be on display at the Tokyo Auto Salon 2026, from January 9 to 11 at Makuhari Messe in Chiba. Whether the modern Delica ever makes it to the US remains uncertain. For now, Mitsubishi is making the most of what it has.
