More Buyers Are Turning to the BMW Z4 as Production Ends

(0 reviews)

Missing Them Until They're Gone

The BMW Z4 is one of the longest-standing cars in the Bavarian automaker's lineup, replacing the Z3 and continuing the roadster option for those who want the open-air BMW experience. While it has always been a solid seller, the times have changed against the Z4, and BMW is going to kill it off for now.

When manufacturers announce that a car will be killed off, depending on the car, people will either not care or will flock to the dealers to get their hands on one before it goes. It seems the latter phenomenon is happening with the Z4

Q1 Bump

According to a report by BMW Blog, the current/outgoing BMW Z4 got a modest demand bump in the first half of 2026. This comes after the official production of the Z4 had already concluded; according to the report, the plant that produced the Z4 for the U.S. had already wrapped up production in April. BMW confirmed that the G29-generation Z4 would be going to pasture after the Final Edition launched in November 2025.

Looking at the Q1 2026 sales numbers, demand for the Z4 rose by 4.9% compared to the same period last year, reaching a total of 2,555 cars. Despite this slight increase in demand, the Z4 remained ranked second in sales, besting only the outgoing BMW iX.

Even if the Z4 was never a volume driver for BMW, when this G29 generation launched in 2018, it sold in respectable numbers, with a slow decline over the years as new competitors entered and industry preferences shifted. Sales started out strong in 2019 at 15,827 and reached their lowest point at 9,744 in 2025.

No Z For Now

Having seen the sales and industry trends, BMW has no intention of immediately replacing the Z with an all-new model. Right now, they are in the middle of rejuvenating their EV line with the debut of the Neue Klasse cars, and with sustained new EV launches planned in the future, it's expected that BMW's focus will be on that rather than a small-volume convertible sports car.
