I know I’m not alone in saying that the Tyrrell P34 is one of the coolest looking F1 cars ever produced, not only because the lines are good on it, but also because it’s a freak show with 4 front wheels. And the idea behind it was genius. Little wheels and tires have less drag and that means the front could be lower and let all that good air go over the car, through the rear wing where it provided great downforce. And while they were a freak show looking car, they did well. It actually worked. Until F1 said no more.
I’ve seen plenty of video of these cars, as have so many of you, but never have I thought about building a go kart version which makes me kind of disappointed in myself to be honest. Now that I see this cool go kart that the guys at Eastwood put together, I am jealous and want one for myself. Can you imagine the fun you could have if a group of you and your buddies were racing a fleet of them around your own track?
The thought puts a smile on my face. Watch the video.
Video Description:
The Tyrrell P34 is one of the strangest race cars ever to compete in Formula One. Built in 1976, the six-wheeled machine wasn’t just a gimmick—it actually won races and proved that sometimes the craziest ideas are worth pursuing.
So naturally, we decided to build one.
In this first episode, we dive into the history of the legendary P34 before attempting to recreate the concept at go-kart scale. Starting with a pile of tubing and a questionable amount of confidence, we build the chassis from scratch, mount all six wheels, and begin tackling the biggest challenge of the project: figuring out how to make four front wheels steer without turning the whole thing into a shopping cart.
Will Formula One’s weirdest idea work as a go-kart? We’re about to find out.
