This 1992 Fox Body Mustang Doubled Its Power With a Modern Coyote V8

Not Your Average Fox

This 1992 Ford Fox Body Mustang may look like just another classic wearing custom wheels, but there’s more to it than meets the eye. Listed on Bring a Trailer, the car features extensive modifications, with the 5.0-liter Coyote V8 swap standing out as the most significant upgrade.

More specifically, the Coyote V8 crate engine is a Gen 3 unit that was introduced in the MY2018 S550 Mustang. This generation brought key advancements such as direct and port injection (dual-injection) and revised internals, pushing factory output to 460 horsepower. While the listing does not disclose an exact power figure, it’s reasonable to assume the engine is producing something in that range. If so, the Mustang – which received the swapped V8 in 2022 – has already more than doubled its factory-rated output compared with the original 302 Windsor, more commonly known as the “Five-Point-Oh.”

The Hardware Behind the Build

Managing the improved performance is a T56 Magnum 6-speed manual transmission, which sends power to the rear wheels through an aluminum driveshaft and a Detroit Truetrac limited-slip differential. The car rides on SVT-style billet 17-inch wheels wrapped in Continental ExtremeContact Sport tires, while suspension duties are handled by QA1 coilovers. Stopping power comes from Wilwood disc brakes with Hydroboost, a system that uses hydraulic pressure rather than engine vacuum to deliver stronger and more consistent braking.

The interior has also received a wide range of upgrades. These include Recaro front seats, a Momo steering wheel, and a roll bar, giving the cabin a more track-focused appeal. The instrument cluster shows a rolled-over odometer reading approximately 17,000 miles, with about 1,200 miles recorded since the build was completed, according to the listing.

Additional modifications listed include an X-pipe dual exhaust system, Dynomax mufflers, a custom billet oil pan, a stainless steel fuel tank, an aluminum radiator, and an upgraded sway bar.

The Value Proposition

Considering that a Gen 3 Coyote V8 crate engine alone can cost around $11,000, the current bid of $15,000 may still have room to climb. After all, the auction ends on January 27, leaving plenty of time for interested bidders to push the price higher.

The Fox Body designation refers to the third-generation Mustang, named for Ford’s Fox platform, which also underpinned vehicles such as the Lincoln Continental. Today, the Mustang has evolved into its seventh generation with the S650 Mustang, which now uses a Gen 4 Coyote V8. If the price is right, this sleeper-looking Fox Body may stand as an appealing alternative to a new pony car off the lot, without giving up much ground in terms of performance—at least on paper.
