This 320-Mile Chinese EV for $13,000 Is the Kind of Deal U.S. Buyers Can Only Dream Of

An Unbeatable Price-to-Range Proposition

The Leapmotor B05 electric hatchback has launched in China with a price that seems almost impossible by American standards. The entry-level 515 Plus trim starts at just $13,100 during the early-bird promotion period, delivering an impressive 515 kilometers, or roughly 320 miles, of range. 

To put this in perspective, the cheapest new electric vehicle available in the United States is the Nissan Leaf, which starts at around $29,990 and offers 303 miles of range in its base configuration. Spending more than double what the B05 costs gets American buyers a similar range of capability.

Premium Features in an Economy Package

The B05 comes equipped with features that would be considered premium in many markets. The compact hatchback measures 174.4 inches in length and rides on a 107.6-inch wheelbase, a footprint similar to the 2026 Nissan Leaf and other subcompact crossovers. If you think the Leapmotor B05 looks a lot like a Volkswagen Golf, well, you’re not alone. 

Depending on the trim level, buyers get either a 177-horsepower or 214-horsepower single electric motor paired with battery packs ranging from 56.2 to 67.1 kWh. The top-tier 605 Max variant pushes range to 605 kilometers, about 376 miles, and includes advanced driver assistance systems with lidar technology. It's worth noting that the advertised range figures are CLTC (China Light Duty Vehicle Test Cycle) ratings, which are roughly 35% higher/optimistic than EPA figures. Taking that into account, the base B05 would still manage an estimated 200+ miles of EPA range.

Where Leapmotor Stands in the Global Market

Leapmotor has emerged as a serious player in China's intensely competitive electric vehicle landscape. While the company still trails industry leader BYD, which sold over 340,000 vehicles in a single month during 2025, Leapmotor has been steadily climbing. The automaker achieved its 2024 annual target of 250,000 vehicles ahead of schedule. Its partnership with automotive giant Stellantis has positioned the brand for global expansion in 2026.

The Affordability Gap That Defines Two Markets

The price disparity between Chinese electric vehicles and those available in America highlights a fundamental market difference. While American buyers pay premium prices for modest specifications, Chinese consumers enjoy access to feature-rich electric vehicles at prices that make them competitive with traditional gasoline cars. The B05 represents the kind of value proposition that could reshape global automotive markets if trade barriers weren't keeping these vehicles out of American showrooms.
