Volvo’s Most Popular EV Looks Meaner Than Ever With New Black Edition

A Dark Twist

Volvo’s smallest electric vehicle, the EX30, recorded the strongest sales among the brand’s EV lineup in the U.S. last year, with 5,409 units sold, according to data compiled by Cox Automotive. Now, the Swedish marque has introduced a new Black Edition that could appeal to buyers drawn to murdered-out styling.

This Black Edition is finished in Onyx Black across virtually the entire exterior, including the front Volvo badge and rear script, which are typically finished in chrome. It rides on 19-inch five-spoke alloy wheels, paired with black brake calipers to maintain the fully blacked-out theme. Volvo claims that this paint “sparkles in daylight while reduced light accentuates its elegance.”

The automaker also noted that the deep blue Indigo interior features studio-inspired textile materials and upcycled denim trim exclusive to the Black Edition.

Volvo’s Growing Dark Portfolio

Long-time fans may recall that this isn’t the first time Volvo has rolled out a Black Edition. The darkened treatment is now available across six models: the XC90, XC60, XC40, EX40, EC40, and EX30. Several of these have already reached the U.S., so it wouldn’t be surprising to see the EX30 Black Edition follow – especially given its status as the brand’s best-selling EV stateside.

For now, however, it is offered exclusively in the U.K. in two configurations: Single Motor Extended Range and Twin Motor Performance. Its starting price is £40,060, or around $54,000 in current exchange rates, positioning it between the base model and the off-road-oriented Cross Country trim.

In the U.S., the EX30 starts at $40,345, including destination, while the Cross Country variant begins at $49,545. That suggests the Black Edition would likely slot somewhere between those two price points.

All Black Everything

The press release did not indicate whether Volvo plans to expand the new styling package to other markets. However, Rob Deane, Commercial Operations Director at Volvo Car UK, said:

“The Black Edition variants of our models have struck a chord with buyers in the past, and the EX30 looks really striking with the design additions, giving it even more presence. We are really pleased to offer the Black Edition of our compact premium SUV to customers in the UK.”

It’s worth noting that Volvo's plant in Belgium produces the EX30 for several markets, including the U.S. and the UK. The EX30 was initially built in China before Volvo shifted production to Belgium to avoid U.S. tariffs on Chinese-made EVs.
