SUVs Not Actually Built for Dirt

SUVs are all the craze; people are obsessed with driving around tall, spacious, and oversized cars. SUVs have become so in demand that higher-end luxury brands were forced to jump in on the trend just to open up that market and ensure healthy sales.

The fact is, despite being SUVs, most luxury models never see a dirt road in their lives. Most are used for cruising along highways or high streets rather than going up high peaks. However, a recent video has surfaced online showing some owners putting their luxury barges in extreme conditions.

Luxury SUV Off-road Challenge

On YouTube, there's a video by K1CarTV showing a bunch of SUVs trying to tackle a sandy hill somewhere in what seems to be China. For context, the video has barely any dialogue, with a short AI-sounding voice explaining the off-road capabilities SUVs need. Apart from that, the video just shows a random assortment of cars trying out the course they laid out.

Almost immediatley though, the first car on frame is a Lamborghini Urus. It shows the Urus navigating a soft-sand trail, and the driver isn't being gentle. The video continues with the introduction of more expensive models: a Bentayga, a Cullinan, an Urus, and a couple of G63s.

All of them are mainly trying to conquer a soft, sandy incline. If there's one surface that troubles even the best off-roaders is soft sand, which requires the right amount of everything from power, steering input, and more. Too much power just spins the wheels, and you sink; too little and you just sink.

We see from the video that the Bentayga actually does well on this part, but the Cullinan stops short of the summit. The G63 actually seems to be the most capable of all, which isn't surprising given that it's still essentially closer to its original form compared to the others, a true rugged SUV.

Eclectic Collection

What's funny about this video is that the other featured cars are a mix of brands, sizes, and types of Crossovers and SUVs. We see some local fare from China; some are purpose-built, while others are just humble crossovers. Apart from the notable super luxury models, there were also Range Rovers and even a Maserati.

Even if there really isn't much going on in terms of the video itself, it's interesting to see these uber-luxury SUVs being driven as intended or at least as advertised. Very rarely do we see them in what is supposed to be their natural habitat, and while this video is an extreme case study, the models showcased are generally capable enough to reassure the wealthy who may or may not take them off-roading.
