Two overlanders walk into a Jeep show. There’s no punchline because it’s not a joke. Feel free to laugh though. For the last few years I have been going to the Toledo Jeep Festival to celebrate the history and legacy of the Jeep brand. My first time to Toledo for their annual Jeep show was […]View the full article

After 17 years in Arizona, Overland Expo West has history behind it, but it is not running on history alone. It continues to lead because it keeps delivering the most complete overlanding event experience anywhere in the world. It has the rigs. It has the launches. It has the gear. It has the education. It has the camp culture, the evening programming, the nonprofit support, the exhibitor depth, and the community that brings it all to life. Most of all, it has the authority that comes from

After a quick reset at home, we were back on the road to our next destination. New York City! The girls have been excited about this trip for a long time and we were finally able to put some time aside to make it happen. In our normal fashion, we had to do things differently and we chose to camp at the Liberty Harbor Marina & Rv Park across the Hudson River in Jersey City. We were surrounded by the typical motorhomes that you’d expect in a campground, but there were also a Jeep and a beautif

I always keep my eye out for interesting—or alarming—vehicles. Recently, while waiting to pick up some steel in Tucson to weld gates for our new place, I noticed this Wrangler mounted with what looked like an  . . . let’s just say impractical . . . combination of large-diameter wheels and low-profile mud terrain tires. Sure enough, the aftermarket wheels were 20 inches in diameter—at least two inches too large for a Wrangler (the Rubicon comes with 17-inch wheels)—and mounted with Gladiator Comp

That’s a trip for the memory books! We started our trip by exploring the abandoned town of Union Level, Va for Jennifer’s & my 20th wedding anniversary. Since we were in the area, we made a stop at Lovers Leap & Mabry Mill where we happened to run into some old friends & spent some time catching up. The next day we celebrated Bailey’s 13th birthday while dispersed camping & then visited Brights Zoo near Johnson City, Tn so she could see their newest addition, a rare spotless baby

Toyota just announced the return of the FJ Cruiser, at least in a spiritual sense. While it’s been just over a decade since the previous FJ Cruiser left the States, it was only discontinued in the Middle East a couple of years ago. However, if you’re waiting to head out into the North American wilderness in a brand new Land Cruiser “FJ,” you’ll have to wait at least a bit longer since this new model will only be available in Asian markets. Union Level, Va “The Most Visited Ghost Town in Virginia”, or so the sign on the building across the street would have you believe. We’re not entirely sure how true that statement is as there were only a few passerby’s when we visited. Nevertheless, it was a very interesting place to visit and if you’re willing  to make the journey we’d say that it’s worth it.

Defying Labels: The Story of RiG’d and its Ramblin’ Approach to Business. RiG’d started in a Southern California apartment with a simple idea: build a better hitch-mounted spare-tire carrier that could haul a full-size spare, carry bikes, and mount essentials like a camp table, fuel, and recovery gear. Founder and CEO Luke Wronski recalls calling a friend to gut-check the concept. “I have this idea,” he said. “There are options out there, but nothing does everything I want.” The reply became

That’s another one checked off of our list. We went on a little bit of an Easter egg hunt on the way back to Virginia during our last trip and located the former Lincoln Family homestead in Virginia. You heard me right. How many of you knew that the Lincoln Family had lived in Virginia?

From time to time, overlanding takes you beyond the trail. A well-rounded journey often includes veering off track to the nearest peak, dropping in for a family visit out of state, or popping into a brewery with friends. While we don’t always need to dress to impress, it doesn’t hurt to choose clothing items that are comfortable, evoke confidence, and can handle the rigors of the road. Since what we wear is an important part of what we do at XOVERLAND, we’ve rounded up our go-to pieces of Vertx

When traveling to certain areas of the U.S., you’re bound to encounter at least one area that does not have any public land or dispersed camping options available. Crazy, I know. But this is more common than you might think. Take the East Coast for example. There’s plenty of places to explore and dispersed camping is readily available in the National Forrest of the Appalachian Mountains, but what if you wanted to get closer to the coast? Maybe you want to explore regions of New England, Maryland

The temperatures plummeted to a chilly -11°F, but that didn’t stop our crew of overlanders from embracing the cold and making the most of the winter wonderland. People traveled from near and far, some driving over 12 hours through harsh conditions, just to be a part of this special event. The cold didn’t deter the fun—we had blazing campfi

Overlanding…. What is it? There are varying opinions and definitions of this popular term. Some believe its four wheeling across rugged terrain, miles from civilization and some believe it’s purely car camping. While both of those scenarios certainly fall into the definition of Overlanding, there’s a lot more to it then just that. You see, “Overlanding” can really mean something different to everyone. One of the best definitions that we’ve happened across is “Overlanding sees the journey as the

While overlanding offers a unique blend of adventure and freedom, nothing can derail the thrill faster than digging through a disorganized mess. Assigning a designated place for each piece of kit leads to a quicker camp setup and teardown and more efficient meal preparation. This allows you to spend more time enjoying a laugh with friends, sitting around a crackling campfire, or choosing a lengthy off-road trail, all while conserving energy and focus for the journey ahead. You likely know by no

The Black Hills of South Dakota are truly magnificent. Beautiful canyons, streams, lakes and waterfalls, there are so many things to discover there outside of the usual tourist hotspots. Spearfish Canyon is a great example of what make the hills so amazing. The canyon can be explored via HWY 14A or the myriad of back country roads that run all through the area. Either way you choose, I guarantee that you’ll discover a landscape that is unmatched by any other. Have you ever been to the Black Hill

One of the most difficult things we’ve found about having close friends whom share our passion for Adventure Travel, is that they’re always traveling and are rarely in the same place that we are! October of 2020, we were finally able to meet up with one such friend and we had a blast catching up and traveling all over the Black Hills and Colorado with him. Until recently, vehicle manufacturers didn’t supply off-the-lot options for overlanders, so we’ve adapted by modifying vehicles to suit our needs. Little did we know Toyota secretly developed the solution many have been waiting for—the Tacoma Trailhunter, a rugged new platform designed for overlanders to “go far.” Expedition Overland has filmed and produced global travel documentary series for over 14 years, and since our inception, Toyota vehicles—and more specifically, the Tacoma platform—hav

So you want to build your truck for off-roading! Cool! So what does that mean? There are a bunch of different kinds of off-roading, and none of them are really built anything like any of the other ones.  When you’re building your truck, what is the difference between an overland build, vs a prerunner build vs a rock crawling build? What makes each one so much better at doing what it’s designed to do? There are a lot of “overlanders” who think they are rock crawling, and there are even more rock
