Waymo’s Robotaxis Can’t Close Their Own Doors — So It’s Paying People To Do It
The fact that we now have fully autonomous ride-hailing services across U.S. cities, mainly from Alphabet's Waymo, Amazon's Zoox and Tesla, is probably the best indicator of the giant leap automotive technology has made 140 years after the world's first automobile went on sale. But as far as self-driving tech has come, there's still a lot of room for improvement in some areas, including navigating adverse weather (especially rain, snow and fog), dealing with complex human behaviors, such as erratic pedestrians, or encountering unexpected infrastructure failures, such as roadworks and traffic lights going dark, among many other things. As it turns out, it doesn't take much for robotaxis to stop working, as even a minor thing like a passenger leaving a door open can render them inoperable. This goes to show that, as sophisticated as they are, Waymo's robotaxis still need a human touch once in a while to work. DoorDash Deliverer Was Offered $11.25 To Close A Waymo Door In Atlanta Getty CNBC reports that Waymo has found a rather non-technical solution to this problem, namely paying gig workers from companies like DoorDash and Honk to help close the doors of their stranded robotaxis. When a departing passenger leaves a door open, the car won't move, as the Jaguar I-Pace vehicles Waymo currently uses do not offer the possibility of closing the doors automatically. As a result, the car is left stranded until someone closes the door. To avoid losses related to downtime caused by this issue, Waymo is turning to gig workers from companies like DoorDash, a leading food, groceries, alcohol and convenience items delivery service. Alphabet confirmed that it's running a pilot in Atlanta to compensate delivery drivers for closing Waymo doors that are left open. The way this works is that DoorDash drivers are notified when a Waymo in the area has an open door, and they can choose to stop by and close the door so the respective vehicle can quickly get back on the road. DoorDash gig workers have begun posting on social media about this, with one Atlanta driver sharing a screenshot of the DoorDash app on reddit that showed he was offered $11.25 to close a Waymo door located 0.7 miles away from where they were at the time. Honk Users Can Get Up To $24 Per Trip In LA For Closing A Door Waymo Besides DoorDash, Waymo is also paying users of Honk, an independent roadside assistance company, to close the doors of its robotaxis. According to a recent report from Washington Post, Honk users were offered up to $24 per trip in Los Angeles for closing a door; it's worth noting that Honk users already get paid to provide maintenance on Waymo vehicles, such as towing vehicles that have run out of battery or for other minor maintenance needs. Understandably, deliverers are excited about this new potential source of revenue, although it's not clear how big the market for this is, i.e. how often Waymo passengers leave the doors open after a robotaxi ride. Waymo and DoorDash told CNBC in a joint statement that they are always looking for new and flexible ways for DoorDash deliverers to earn money, although they pointed out that future Waymo vehicles will have automated door closures. The robotaxi service did not say when that capability will become available, though. Waymo primarily operates a fleet of all-electric Jaguar I-Pace crossovers for its commercial driverless ride-hailing services in U.S. cities including Phoenix, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Austin. However, the company is transitioning to a sixth-generation driver system, which will include modified Zeekr Ojai minivans and Hyundai Ioniq 5 SUVs. The Ojai is currently undergoing pre-launch trials for employees in cities like Phoenix and San Francisco, with a broader public rollout expected in 2026. View the full article

BMW Launches New Edition Shadow Models — But Not for America
Not the First, but Still DefinitiveBMW is far from the first automaker to create the sporty compact executive segment. But if you ask anyone to name a car from that class, chances are, you'll get the 3 Series as a common answer. The first-generation model was introduced to the world in July 1975, succeeding the hugely popular and highly acclaimed 02 Series. Replacing the 02 models was a tough ask, but the 3 Series pulled it off nonetheless. Over 50 years and seven generations later, it remains Munich's bread-and-butter model, even if it's no longer at the top of the company's sales charts. BMW The Celebrations ContinueIt's been nearly a year since celebrations for the milestone moment kicked off, but the party is still ongoing. Several limited-edition models have been made in several regions, along with loads of meets and special events. And speaking of special editions, BMW Japan also joins in on the fun by launching another celebratory 3 Series. Dubbed the 3 Series Edition Shadow, you can probably guess what it looks like judging from its name alone. Yes, it's yet another 'black edition' model with a couple of extras thrown in for good measure. BMW Edition Shadow FeaturesWhat's interesting here is that BMW Japan isn't limiting the powertrain and body style options for Edition Shadow 3 Series models. It's available for the 318i, 318i Touring, 320i, 320i Touring, 320d xDrive, and 320d xDrive Touring. Of course, we'd go with any of the Tourings, thank you very much, and yes, you can get it in other colors, too. In terms of equipment, the Edition Shadow models get the M Sport pack standard, along with gloss black grille, black exhaust pipes, and Shadowline exterior highlights. Inside, there are brushed aluminum trims, galvanic buttons and dials, and M PerformTex seats. Adaptive headlights are also included, as well as those unique 19-inch BMW Individual Y-spoke alloy wheels. No exact details were given as to how many will be made, but it's safe to assume it will be under 1,000 units Mind you, this is the second model from BMW Japan that commemorates the 50th anniversary of the 3 Series. It had previously released a first batch with a different look, and it also included the M340i xDrive and M340i xDrive Touring with five units apiece. Instant collector status in Japan, for sure. BMW There are Other Edition Shadow Models, Too Aside from the 3 Series, BMW Japan is also offering Edition Shadow versions of its best-selling models, namely the X1 and X3. Those models haven't been around as long as the 3 Series, but might as well be part of the celebrations. For the X1, BMW Japan will roll out 1,000 examples of the Edition Shadow, with 700 being xDrive20d models and the rest sDrive18d. As for the X3, all of them will be 20d xDrive with just 450 units to be produced. BMW BMW View the 3 images of this gallery on the original article View the full article

Major Blizzard Alert: 70-MPH Winds, 24 Inches of Snow, and What Northeast Drivers Should Know
Over 30 million residents who live along the I-95 corridor should prepare for near-zero visibility, grounded flights, and white-out highways due to a blizzard warning issued today by the National Weather Service for all of New York City and Long Island, the entire coast of New Jersey, and the entire coast of Connecticut. The NWS has stated that residents may experience life-threatening conditions while traveling during this time. Residents can expect 1-3 inches of snow an hour throughout the duration of the storm, which could lead to near-zero visibility within a matter of minutes, as well as sustained winds of up to 50 mph and wind gusts of up to 70 mph creating roadways to be almost indistinguishable from the surrounding area. Travel bans for non-essential travel are expected to be issued in several states, and local authorities are urging residents to stay off the road when the storm “bombs out” on Sunday afternoon. A nor’easter becomes a bomb cyclone when its central air pressure drops extremely fast. That rapid pressure fall intensifies the storm’s circulation, strengthening wind speeds and dramatically increasing snowfall rates, which is why bomb cyclones often produce blizzard conditions and near-whiteout visibility in a short period of time. What the Storm Will Do to Your VehicleIn addition to the high chance of getting stuck, vehicles driven in heavy snow can be plagued with an assortment of mechanical issues as well. Heavy, wet snow compacts in wheel wells around the wheels, potentially causing reduced steering angle and friction against tires. Snow can also compact onto braking system components. When the freeze-thaw cycle occurs after a snowstorm such as this, the formation of rust is accelerated on exposed undercarriage components. Cold weather has a sharp impact on battery performance, if your battery is older than three years, have it checked now. In addition, tire pressure will decrease by about 1 psi for each 10-degree drop in temperature and may impair your vehicle’s ability to handle treacherous roads. Kristen Brown Before the Storm Hits, Do ThisFill your gas tank today because there's going to be a huge demand for fuel right before a big storm, and many gas stations could run out of gas quicker than anticipated. If possible, move your vehicle to a garage, or at least remove any unsecured roof cargo that can potentially become a missile in 60 mph winds. Add an emergency kit to your trunk containing an ice scraper, jumper cables, a blanket, and sand for traction if you become stuck. Before the temperature plummets tonight, check your windshield wipers and add freeze-resistant windshield washer fluid to them. Due to the unpredictable nature of this storm, check your local weather reports or NWS updates before venturing out this weekend. View the full article

Rivian Adds Apple Watch Unlock to R1 as R2 Launch Nears
A Smarter R1 ArrivesAfter outlining updates for the Rivian Electric Delivery Van (EDV), the EV maker has released software version 2026.03 for its first- and second-generation R1 models. The update introduces Apple Watch integration and revisions to several drive modes. Like Tesla, Rivian now allows owners to use their Apple Watch to control certain vehicle functions without a smartphone. Gen 1 vehicles – models built through 2024 – can be locked and unlocked by tapping the ‘lock’ icon, while Gen 2 models – built for 2025 and later – support passive entry, automatically unlocking when the digital key is detected in proximity. Rivian said that its Apple Watch app will be updated over time. Rivian Fine-Tuning the Drive ExperienceAs for drive mode updates, Sport Mode has now been expanded to base dual-motor models. The update allows compatible Gen 1 and Gen 2 vehicles to remain at ‘Standard’ ride height instead of automatically lowering the suspension. Rivian said the change was introduced for owners who appreciate Sport Mode’s sharper responsiveness but prefer the look and feel of a higher ride height. Meanwhile, Launch Mode is now available on Gen 1 quad-motor models and both generations of dual-motor Performance variants. Rivian’s term for launch control, the feature can be activated by selecting Sport Mode, tapping the flag icon, and then holding the brake and accelerator simultaneously. Rivian also introduced a new ‘Lower’ setting, in addition to ‘Low,’ within Kneel Mode. The feature allows R1 models to drop by roughly an extra inch on average, depending on the variant and tire setup. Given the size of the R1T and R1S – comparable to a Ford F-150 Lightning – the added drop should make getting in and out of the vehicles easier. Rivian Practical ImprovementsOther updates in version 2026.03 include a cold-weather indicator that shows how much energy is being used to keep the battery warm, as well as added flexibility that allows owners to adjust specific Drive Modes and settings while certain Gen 1 Driver+ and Gen 2 Autonomy+ features are engaged. These updates should help narrow the gap between Gen 1 and Gen 2 R1 models, making them feel more refined and intuitive as Rivian prepares for its next phase. That next chapter begins with the all-new R2 – a smaller, more affordable EV expected to start at around $45,000, placing it squarely in Tesla Model Y territory and positioning it as the brand's potential volume seller. Jeep Gives the Gladiator a Retro Two-Tone Look for Just $495
Jeep has been leaning into its roots lately with what they call their "Convoy Campaign." So far, we've seen unique models like the Gladiator Shadow Ops and Wrangler Willys 392. Now the Jeep Gladiator will get a nostalgic appearance package called Whitecap. It is a simple, low-cost add-on that gives the pickup a classic two-tone look inspired by early Jeeps. Small updates like this also show why Jeep remains a key pillar for Stellantis during a turbulent period. A Heritage Look Without The Hefty Price Stellantis Whitecap is available across several Gladiator trims, including Sahara, Rubicon, Rubicon X, Mojave and Mojave X. The package focuses on visual changes such as a bright white roof, a matching grille and retro-style decals that highlight the brand’s history dating back to the early 1940s. Considering it's more of an optional extra and less of a limited edition, Jeep only charges $495 to turn your Gladiator into a Whitecap. The Same Open-Air Off-Road Pickup Apart from the new exterior add-on, the Gladiator remains unchanged. It still comes with a 392 Hemi V8, offers up to 7,700 pounds of towing capacity, and a maximum payload of 1,720 pounds, along with a five-foot steel bed and removable roof and doors that set it apart from other pickups. It may not be as sophisticated as rivals like the Ford Ranger Raptor or the Toyota Tacoma, but the Gladiator dominates off-road. Jeep CEO Bob Broderdorf also says more colors and customization options are on the way to give Jeep owners an even greater sense of individuality. Stellantis's Saving Grace Stellantis Whitecap arrives at a time when Jeep is under pressure. The brand has faced declining sales, recalls, and questions about its direction, even as competition intensifies across the SUV and off-road market. Stellantis has also admitted it overestimated how quickly buyers would move to EVs, having to suffer a hefty $26.2 billion write-off as a result. and is shifting focus back to what customers want. That thinking is already visible across the lineup, with talk of a V8 returning to the Jeep Grand Cherokee and continued enthusiasm around traditional performance models. One thing remains certain: Jeep's "Convoy Campaign" puts customers' needs first, no matter how gimmicky it might seem, and we hope there's much more to come. View the full article

Ultra-Rare Nissan Nismo 400R Could Break $1 Million at Auction
A Unicorn Goes to AuctionThe Nissan Skyline GT-R R32, R33, and R34 are undeniably some of the most iconic models from the Japanese marque, but the Nismo 400R may be the most coveted of them all – arguably matching the R34 Z-Tune in collector appeal, which itself is rumored to have sold for nearly $2 million. One of the 44 400R examples is currently listed through Broad Arrow Auctions and is expected to fetch seven figures, with estimates reaching as high as $1.1 million. Based on the R33 platform, the 400R was developed with genuine racing DNA, drawing on lessons learned from Nissan’s Le Mans campaign at that time. While it started life as an R33 GT-R V-Spec, it received an extensive list of performance-focused upgrades – from revised aerodynamics to a heavily reworked powertrain – effectively bypassing the Japanese “Gentleman’s Agreement” of the 1990s. Engineering Without RestraintWhile JDM icons like the Toyota Mk4 Supra and Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution were officially capped at 276 horsepower under the so-called Gentleman’s Agreement, the 400R delivered around 400 PS (approximately 394 horsepower). That output was made possible by REINIK, which enlarged the stock RB26DETT twin-turbocharged 2.6-liter inline-six to 2.8 liters. The engine also received larger N1 turbochargers and a host of internal upgrades before being designated the RB-X GT2. Outside of the powertrain, the 400R features revised bodywork, including a carbon-fiber hood and rear spoiler, wider fenders, and redesigned front and rear bumpers to improve airflow. It also rides on Rays Nismo LM-GT1 three-piece wheels and comes equipped with a revised exhaust system, upgraded intercooler, Nismo-tuned springs, and Bilstein dampers. Broad Arrow Auctions Collector-Grade ExampleDue to the U.S. 25-year import rule, the 400R has only recently become eligible for legal importation, making examples stateside exceptionally rare. This particular 1996 model is the eighth of 44 units produced and spent most of its life in Japan before being imported to Canada in 2023. It later made its way to the United States the following year and is said to be part of an “exceptionally small group of 400Rs” currently in the country. According to the listing, the car has just 16,313 kilometers (10,136 miles) on the odometer and retains its original maintenance manuals. It is scheduled to cross the block at The Amelia Auction 2026 in Florida on March 7, alongside other high-value collectibles, including a 1968 Lamborghini Miura P400 and a 1963 Ferrari 250 GT Berlinetta Lusso. If it surpasses $1 million, it would rank among the most expensive Skyline GT-Rs ever sold, alongside the Paul Walker–driven R34 GT-R from Fast & Furious 4, which sold for approximately $1.357 million at auction in 2023. Tesla Fails to Overturn $243 Million Verdict in Fatal Autopilot Crash
When Safety Tech Becomes a Legal QuestionApart from convenience, Tesla’s so-called Autopilot has always been connected to safety. The advanced driver aid can steer, brake, and step in when needed. Systems like Full Self-Driving (FSD) are officially SAE-certified as Level 2, so the driver is supposed to stay in charge. Sounds simple enough on paper, but it’s a different story on the road. In a 2019 crash in Key Largo, Florida. George McGee was driving a Tesla Model S on Autopilot when he looked down to grab his phone. The car kept going through an intersection at highway speed and slammed into a parked SUV. Unfortunately, Naibel Benavides Leon died in the crash, while her boyfriend, Dillon Angulo, was seriously injured. Driver’s error notwithstanding, Tesla was questioned about whether its system should have stepped in or if it made it too easy for drivers to check out. Cases were filed in 2021 and 2022, and in the end, a federal jury in August last year placed 33% of the blame on Tesla, handing down a $243 million verdict. Tesla tried to overturn it, but the verdict stood. Tesla Judge Rejects Tesla’s Bid to Undo the VerdictUS District Judge Beth Bloom shot down Tesla’s push to throw out the jury verdict, saying the evidence at trial more than backed up the outcome. The ruling, released Friday, found Tesla didn’t bring anything new to change the jury’s mind, Reuters reports. The damages break down like this: $19.5 million for Benavides’ estate, $23.1 million for Angulo, and $200 million in punitive damages split between them. The jury decided Tesla’s design and rollout of Autopilot helped enable driver inattention. McGee, the driver, had already settled with the plaintiffs. Of note, Tesla reportedly turned down a $60 million settlement that was offered before the trial. Tesla argued it shouldn’t be blamed for what a distracted driver did and said the punitive damages didn’t comply with Florida law. Judge Bloom saw it differently. Tesla hasn’t commented on the new ruling yet, but it is expected to appeal. Tesla Autopilot, Rebranded and Under PressureTesla’s push for self-driving, led by CEO Elon Musk, has been under the microscope for years. Lawsuits have stacked up, even if most never made it to trial. This one did, and the verdict stuck. Lately, Tesla has started to change course with its Autopilot feature. To sidestep regulatory headaches in California, the company dropped the “Autopilot” from its marketing, switching to terms like “Traffic Aware Cruise Control” and stressing that Full Self-Driving still needs supervision. The ruling doesn’t ban Tesla’s tech, but it raises the stakes for how the company markets and explains it. As more cases hit the courts, the line between what drivers are responsible for and what automakers must answer for is getting less abstract – and a lot more costly. Tesla View the full article

The Cheapest 2026 Nissan Leaf Won’t Be Coming to America
A Cheaper Leaf that Almost HappenedNissan’s latest Leaf is a clear departure from the model’s no-frills roots. The design is sharper, the tech is up to date, and the price is lower than most expected. Starting just under $30,000, the 2026 Leaf actually costs less than the original 2010 version when you factor in inflation. That move alone made the new Leaf a step forward for EV accessibility. Nissan even looked set to go further by bringing a cheaper S trim to the US, mirroring what’s already available in other countries. The idea was simple: offer a more affordable Leaf for buyers who don’t need the longest range or extra features. That plan, though, is now off the table before it ever reached US showrooms. Cole Attisha Why Nissan Pulled the PlugIn a statement sent to InsideEVs, Nissan has decided not to bring the smaller-battery Leaf to the US for 2026. The company says it’s shifting focus based on what buyers actually want and where it makes sense to invest. “Nissan continually evaluates market trends, customer preferences, and the evolving EV landscape to ensure we are focusing our resources where they create the most value. As part of that process, we have decided not to introduce the smaller‑battery variant of the 2026 Nissan LEAF in the US this model year," said Dominic Vizor, Nissan’s director of product communications for the US. "We remain committed to delivering the right products at the right time, and we will continue to assess future battery configurations based on customer demand and segment needs," he added. The Leaf S, sold in other markets, uses a 52 kWh battery and puts out 174 horsepower and 254 lb-ft of torque. It’s enough for daily driving, but it falls short of the longer 303-mile range of the S+ version that US buyers get. Nissan never got around to attaching a sticker price to the Leaf S, but it’s expected to be below $26,000. It would have traded at a lower price, making it a true entry-level EV. Cole Attisha Affordable, but Not the CheapestEven without the S trim, the Leaf is still one of the cheapest EVs you can buy. It’s not the absolute lowest-priced option, though – the Chevrolet Bolt EV still holds that spot, at least for now. Chevy has already said the current Bolt EV won’t be around much longer, which could give other models a shot at the budget EV crown. For now, buyers looking for affordable electric cars can also check out the Hyundai Kona Electric, Mini Cooper SE, and Fiat 500e – each with its own trade-offs in range, space, or availability. GM Recalls 43,000 SUVs Over Transmission Issue That Can Lock Rear Wheels
Transmission Trouble, AgainFord isn’t the only automaker recently dealing with a transmission issue that can lock up the rear wheels. General Motors has issued a recall covering 43,732 full-size SUVs over a similar problem. The issue is related to a 2024 recall (24V797) that affected more than 461,000 vehicles. This time, however, the recall applies to gas-powered models equipped with a 10-speed automatic transmission. According to the new recall (26V085), certain vehicles may contain a transmission control valve that is susceptible to excessive wear. The defect can lead to a loss of hydraulic pressure within the valve body, resulting in harsh shifting and, in some cases, rear-wheel lock-up, increasing the risk of a crash. Chevrolet Breaking It DownThe list of affected models includes 17,178 units of the Chevrolet Tahoe, 7,616 units of the Chevrolet Suburban, 2,239 units of the 2022 Cadillac Escalade ESV, 3,609 units of the 2022 Cadillac Escalade, 7,820 units of the GMC Yukon, and 5,270 units of the GMC Yukon XL – all from the 2022 model year. According to the safety recall, a customer reported that their vehicle’s transmission locked up, causing them to lose control and crash into a guardrail. GM opened an investigation on November 21, 2025, and later determined that the affected vehicles were not equipped with diagnostic software capable of detecting excess wear in the transmission control valve. Cadillac How GM Plans to Prevent ItAs a remedy, GM will install updated transmission control module (TCM) software. The update is designed to detect and monitor excessive wear in advance – potentially up to 10,000 miles before a lock-up condition could occur. If the system detects an issue, the software will limit the transmission to fifth gear to help prevent a lock-up event, which typically occurs during a downshift from eighth gear. GM plans to notify affected owners on March 30, 2026. Aside from the transmission issue, GM is also recalling roughly 600,000 vehicles equipped with the 6.2-liter L87 V8 over concerns of potential engine failure. The remedy includes switching to an updated oil specification, specifically Mobil 1 FS 0W-40. The issue has also led to a lawsuit, with plaintiffs alleging that GM knew about the engine’s potential failure risk before the vehicles were sold. Why EV Repairs Still Take Longer Than Gas Cars
The Good NewsA report by Mitchell found that repair costs for EVs have dipped slightly. That should give current owners a little more confidence, should the unfortunate happen. In the U.S, it's down to $6,395 from $6,707 or about $400 less than last year. Okay, it still sounds pricey, but it's still something. But that's pretty much where the good news ends, because EVs are still more expensive to repair than ICE-powered vehicles. The complexity of these vehicles isn't doing it any favors, either. Tesla They Can't Fix Them Like They Used ToAccording to the collision management software provider, repairable claims in the U.S. went up by 14 percent. Claims for PHEVs also went up by 6 percent, mild-hybrids by 20 percent. As more and more electrified vehicles join the roads, coupled with the additional sensors and radars modern cars have, the repair industry is facing several challenges. "Due to their dense electrical architectures, software-driven systems and interconnected, sensor-heavy designs, these vehicles require additional diagnostic and calibration operations when damaged that can add cost, complexity and cycle time to each repair," said Ryan Mandell, Mitchell’s vice president of strategy and market intelligence. Getty Images Costly RecalibrationsEVs and hybrids aren't the only ones guilty of having heaps of sensors, lasers, and cameras on board. That said, there are more of them to be found in electrified vehicles to keep more things in check. You have software for battery management, drivetrain, motor position, pressure sensors, and much, much more. After an accident, all those sensors have to be recalibrated. Sure, it's fitted with new sensors and the like, but it won't work properly unless there is a baseline of sorts. It's not just a one-time job, either; it often requires a second, or even a third, visit to the repair shop to get things back to where they once were. For reference, EVs need 1.70 recalibrations, 1.63 for hybrid vehicles, and 1.54 for combustion-powered models. It doesn't help that some automakers use proprietary software and hardware in their EVs, further increasing complexity and delaying repair times. Fabian Kirchbauer Photography Two Sides to the CoinThere is a bright side, though. A study conducted about a year ago revealed that EVs are indeed cheaper to maintain and keep on the road than anything with an engine — whether hybrid or not. EVs do require fluids, but those motors are practically maintenance-free. Also, depending on electricity rates, it's cheaper to charge up than to gas up, per mile. But, again, it's the complexity that makes repair times longer. According to CDK Global, EV owners have waited 34% longer for their vehicles to come back to them, unless it's a Tesla. It's better for them, but it's still a wait, nonetheless. According to the same study, Tesla owners waited 23% longer than non-EV owners. EVs are mainstream now, but there's still a long way to go in simplifying repairs. There are some attempts to make that happen, but it might take a while before certain methods are applied industry-wide. Of course, we're not saying don't buy an EV, but be wary nonetheless. LaMelo Ball’s Custom Hummer EV Loses Wheel in Crash With Kia K5
The Electric BehemothThe GMCHummer EV may be infamous for its inefficiency due to its sheer size and weight, but it’s hardly delicate. So when LaMelo Ball of the Charlotte Hornets crashed his Hummer EV pickup at the intersection of Trade and Tryon streets in Charlotte – resulting in significant damage – it raised eyebrows about the truck’s toughness. According to WSOCTV9, the Hummer EV was attempting to make a left turn at the intersection when it collided with a Kia K5, formerly known as the Optima. The K5 sustained significant damage, while the Hummer EV lost its front-left wheel before coming to a stop on the side of the road. Ball was seen exiting from the driver’s side and later leaving the scene in a Lamborghini Urus. Meanwhile, the K5’s driver was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, per reports. The Weight of the SituationWithout a proper teardown inspection, it’s difficult to pinpoint the exact reason the wheel detached. However, it’s worth noting that aftermarket wheels can be more vulnerable than factory units – especially on a vehicle like the Hummer EV, which weighs around 9,000 pounds, roughly twice the weight of a Toyota Highlander. Any mismatch in load ratings or fitment can amplify stress and potentially lead to more severe damage in a crash. The build was completed by Dreamworks Motorsports and was inspired by Ball’s exclusive Puma sneakers, the “Puma LaMelo Ball MB.01.” The Hummer EV rides on a set of 24x12 DW Forged one-off wheels featuring custom beadlocks and floating center caps. It’s also fitted with a lift kit, which increases ground clearance and gives the already imposing electric pickup an even more commanding stance. Back on the CourtIn his first game since the crash, Ball scored 11 points in a 105–101 loss to the Houston Rockets. During a press conference, he said, “Fortunately, everybody is cool, so blessings. Toyota Expands Its EV Lineup as Rivals Pull Back
No brand has made a bigger bet on battery power than Toyota. Of the products it offers in the U.S. today, 16 are offered in gas-electric form. With a growing number of models, like the latest Camry, they’re only available as hybrid. On the flip side, the Japanese automaker has been among the slowest to adopt pure battery-electric technology. Until now, anyway. Entering the new year, the Toyota brand offered only one EV in the U.S. market, the newly renamed bZ. But with this month’s debut of the Highlander EV that number will quadruple. Related: 2026 Toyota bZ Woodland Gallery: See The Powerful EV In New Images Bucking the TrendThis surge comes at a curious time, EV sales entering a slump following the phase-out of federal tax credits last September. And most analysts expect only a slow rebound in demand. That’s led a number of manufacturers to trim back their plans. Ford in December ended production of the F-150 Lightning and scrapped plans for a 3-row SUV. Mazda is delaying by two years its next EV roll-out. So, why is Toyota moving so quickly to expand its own EV line-up? (And it’s expected to not only grow the Toyota brand’s battery-electric family but expand offerings in the Lexus line-up, as well.) “We see it as a market opportunity,” Group Vice President David Christ told Autoblog following last week’s debut of the Highlander EV. “We Need Multiple Products” Toyota For years, hybrids accounted for little more than an asterisk on U.S. sales charts. Demand has rapidly accelerated with the launch of more models covering a broader range of product segments, industry analysts note, growing from a mere 3% in 2020 to 9% in 2024 and 12% last year. Toyota has handily outpaced the overall market. As it has expanded its range of options, electrified models – including conventional and plug-in hybrids, as well as EVs - jumped from 16% to 47% of U.S. sales over that same time span. Christ, the General Manager of the Toyota Division at Toyota Motor North America, believes that the automaker needs to follow a similar strategy. “Our approach, we feel, is that we need multiple products in the EV space. With only one, the bZ, it was hard to get more share.” Big and Small Toyota With bZ, Toyota had a hard time winning over many buyers who found the EV too small – or too big – or too expensive. The new line-up is more a Goldilocks approach, but with a fourth pot of porridge. It starts with the little C-HR, then the bigger bZ. The new bZ Woodlands package adds another 6 inches in length, as well as modest off-road capabilities. And the line-up is topped off by the three-row Highlander EV. Once the latter model rolls into showrooms, by early 2027 at the latest, said Christ, Toyota’s EV line-up will reflect the breadth of its conventional crossover family. About the only other automaker that has followed a similar path is General Motors’ Cadillac brand and, it should be noted, the luxury division was among the very, very few marques to increase EV sales in 2025. PR Speak Not everyone buys Toyota’s explanation. One long-time industry insider, asking not to be quoted by name, described Toyota’s espoused strategy as “PR Speak,” putting a good spin on a troubled strategy. While not quite so critical, Sam Fiorani, lead analyst at AutoForecast Solutions, told Autoblog that Toyota really didn’t have much of an option. The Woodlands, C-HR and Highlander EV programs were all initiated three to four years ago, at a time when the Biden administration and the California Air Resources Board had put in place demanding new mileage and emissions rules expected to lead to a surge in EV demand. Consulting firm AutoPacific, Inc. previously expected to see EVs reach a 25% share of the U.S. market by 2029. Since Trump came back into office it’s cut that number in half. But Fiorani doesn’t dismiss Toyota’s strategy outright. If anything, he added, the automaker attracts buyers particularly open to electrification and may, indeed, benefit from an expanded line-up of EVs. “The history of Toyota’s hybridization makes their customer base more inclined to buy an EV,” he said. And, by having more of them in the line-up you have a better chance of (attracting) those buyers.” Jumping the Chasm Toyota Stephanie Brinley, principal auto analyst with S&P Global obility, agrees. “The chasm between early EV adopters and mainstream buyers has yet to be jumped,” she said, and it’s likely to be some time before that will happen. But with its success in the hybrid market, she added, Toyota may now be better positioned than most competitors to convince buyers to make that leap. “The broader line-up could make a difference for Toyota.” Perhaps, but Fiorani is ready to place a large bet that Toyota has made some major changes in its volume forecasts since it launched development of its three new EVs, especially after the phase-out of the U.S. tax credits. And not only will the numbers come down, he said, but the automaker’s costs will rise. The industry, as a whole, is having to increase subsidies – read: incentives – to keep potential EV buyers in the market. Economies of Scale The good news for Toyota, said Brinley, is that these new models will find outlets on the global stage, from Berlin to Beijing, spreading out the costs of vehicle development and production. Meanwhile, the new EVs will be getting their batteries from a new Toyota plant that opened last autumn in North Carolina, helping improve economies of scale, further reducing manufacturing costs. For his part, Toyota VP Christ said that having a broader EV line-up will pay off in the long-run. “Even if only 5% of the market (is EV this year), we want to have our share. And we think it will be bigger than that.” By planting a flag in a wide range of segments, the executive believes, Toyota will better establish itself as an EV leader once demand does begin to rebound. Slate CEO Says $25K Pickup Is Still on Track
American startup Slate is still on track to disrupt the pickup truck segment with the most affordable model in the market. The promised mid-$20,000 price point would make the Slate EV the cheapest pickup truck in the country, and by far the cheapest fully electric pickup. But we’ve seen how pricing promises in the development stage can crumble by the time vehicles roll off the production line—just look at the TeslaCybertruck, which never came close to its promised sub-$30,000 price—but an update from Slate’s CEO has renewed hopes that the budget pickup will meet its pricing ambitions. Related: Jay Leno Just Showed Off a $25,000 Electric Pickup That Breaks All the Usual EV Rules New Pricing Info Coming In June Slate Auto In a video shared on social media, Slate Auto CEO Chris Barman made a statement on pricing, clearly aware that consumers are eagerly awaiting confirmation. “We’ve been working tirelessly to get the lowest price possible,” said Barman. “While we’re not pencils down just yet, we’re wrapping negotiations on final parts with suppliers. We’re on track to share new info on the price in June. We think it’ll be worth the wait. And yes, the blank Slate will be in the mid-20s.” That statement may keep any skeptics at bay for a little while longer, but also puts increased pressure on Slate to get the pricing right. Originally, the pickup was meant to start at below $20,000, but that relied on the continued existence of the federal tax credit for EVs, which was eliminated last year. Currently, the cheapest new pickup in the U.S. is the Ford Maverick, which starts at $27,145 with the turbocharged non-hybrid engine. If you want an electric truck, the most affordable model is the Chevy Silverado EV at $52,800. What It Means Slate If all goes according to plan, the base Slate pickup will finally be the stripped-down pickup Americans have been begging for. Already, many consumers are abandoning flashy trims for simpler base models as vehicle prices continue to rise. But the $25k Slate pushes the idea of an entry-level model much further. It will have manual windows, no touchscreen, and even composite plastic instead of paint. It’s designed to be functional, easily repairable, and customizable based on each consumer’s needs. Without a low price to match its utilitarian specification, the Slate pickup truck will be a hard sell. The company’s entire differentiator in the market simply evaporates if it costs Ford Maverick money. But, if Slate meets its pricing targets, it could initiate a new price war in the $25k pickup segment—along with a revived focus on back-to-basics vehicles in an era dominated by expensive, tech-heavy, and unnecessarily complex trucks. 1966 Jeep Super Wagoneer Restomod Packs a 485-HP Hemi V8
Jeep’s Super Wagoneer from the 1960s was among the earliest luxury SUVs the world ever saw. Much like the Range Rover that came after it, it combined serious off-road ability with an opulent cabin and ride. Today, the Super Wagoneer name itself is no longer part of the lineup, with the brand focusing on models like the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer, as well as the tried-and-tested Wrangler instead. However, restomod specialist Vigilante 4x4 has resurrected a 1966 Super Wagoneer and transformed it into something far more modern to drive while keeping the character that made it special. Reimagining One of the First Luxury SUVs Vigilante 4x4 Vigilante 4x4 Vigilante 4x4 Vigilante 4x4 Introduced in 1966, the Super Wagoneer helped define the idea of a premium SUV long before the segment exploded into what it is today, with everyone and their mother having a contender. Vigilante’s team kept the familiar, boxy shape, chrome accents, and vintage design cues while restoring the body and finishing it in Empire Blue. One of the few visual hints that this example is far from stock comes from the beefy BFGoodrich tires, which give it a taller, tougher stance than the original. While some Jeep restomods go against what the original car stood for, the Vigilante team retained its original character while adding some needed upgrades without going over the top. Modern Muscle Beneath a Classic Body Vigilante 4x4 Vigilante 4x4 Vigilante 4x4 Vigilante 4x4 Vigilante ditched the original 270-hp AMC V8 and replaced it with a third-generation 6.4-liter HEMI V8 that produces 485 hp – the same motor found in the new Jeep Wrangler Willys 392. The old three-speed automatic also made way for a Tremec six-speed manual transmission, adding a more driver-focused feel to the experience. Alongside the new powertrain, the hand-built suspension system, upgraded Baer brakes, and a modernized four-wheel-drive setup were added to handle the extra performance. Vigilante is not a stranger to reworking classic Jeeps either. The company has even explored electrification before, by converting an old Jeep Wagoneer into a full-blown EV. An Old Cabin With Hidden Technology Vigilante 4x4 Vigilante 4x4 Vigilante 4x4 Vigilante 4x4 Inside, the approach mirrors the exterior philosophy. Much of the cabin remains period correct with details like a push-button radio, bench seating, and analog dials that preserve the vintage atmosphere. But beneath the surface are modern conveniences such as Bluetooth connectivity and a fully functional HVAC system. Founder Daniel van Doveren summed it up well, explaining that the goal was to "deliver an entirely new driving experience" without committing sacrilege. That's exactly what they did. Want a Cheap EV? The Used Market Is About to Surge
Why the Used EV Market Is RisingThe used EV surge isn’t accidental; it’s the direct consequence of a massive leasing boom that started around 2022. A classification loophole in the Inflation Reduction Act allowed leased EVs to qualify for commercial tax credits, which allowed manufacturers to put their cost savings directly into very low lease rates. EV leasing soared between 2022 and mid 2025, and now those 24- to 36-month leases are maturing. Around 215,000 EVs are projected to come off lease in 2026 — a 230 percent jump from recent years, when annual returns were under 100,000. These elevated volumes are expected to continue into 2027 and 2028. There are already signs of this surge. Used EVs saw a 21.2 percent jump in sales in January 2026 versus the previous year, gleaned from insights from Cox Automotive. Prices are dropping, and the time EVs spend on lots is on the rise. There are also aggressive price cuts on new EVs that are resetting the residual value. We're witnessing something beyond normal depreciation here. We're witnessing the post-subsidy normalization of an overhyped market, and what may be the most buyer-friendly used EV market yet. Getty Images Now Is the Right Time to BuyBy the end of 2025, the average used EV price had fallen roughly 40 percent from its 2022–2023 pricing highs. More than half of used EV listings now sit under $30,000, and many are just two or three years old. For buyers willing to do basic homework, the next 12 to 24 months could represent the cheapest entry point into modern electric vehicle ownership we’ve seen — and may not see again once supply stabilizes. Battery fears are increasingly overstated. Real-world data shows most modern EVs retain about 85–90 percent of capacity after 100,000 miles, and many still carry the federally mandated 8-year battery warranty. Charging infrastructure has also matured significantly since many of these cars were first leased. Getty Images The Models Worth ConsideringBudget buyers should look at the Chevrolet Equinox EV, often available around the $20,000 mark. Politics aside, a 2021-or-newer Tesla Model 3 balances price, range, and charging access. The BMW i3 REX is proving to be a popular used pick, offering range flexibility, but it can carry higher long-term maintenance costs due to its gasoline range extender. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6 deliver ultra-fast charging, though AWD versions command a premium over RWD models. Getty What Buyers Should Watch ForCheck early fast-charging limitations and DC charging speeds, which vary widely by model year. Confirm software update eligibility, compare insurance quotes, and research state-specific incentives that may still apply. Cold-weather range loss can be significant in older EVs without heat pumps, so climate and daily driving needs matter more than headline range figures. View the full article

Volvo's Path to Mass Electrification Started with the Super-Rare C30 Electric
Volvo's Road to ElectrificationLike many automakers, Volvo dabbled with a few electrification experiments back in the day. There was the 1976 Elbil prototype, a boxy, smaller-than-subcompact city car that served more as a test bed than an actual consumer product. Ten years after that, the company built the 480 Electric Prototype, which was a far more usable vehicle than the Elbil. In 1992, Volvo rolled out the ECC Concept, which featured a gas turbine and an electric motor, effectively making it a hybrid. After that, there was the HEV 98 from, er, 1995, and it was an 850 with a plug-in hybrid system. Yes, folks, as far back as the mid-'90s, the Swedes were already working on it. Volvo The First Official EVCome the 2010s, EVs were slowly trickling into the market. Tesla was just about ready to roll out the Model S, while Nissan began its mass production of the first-generation Leaf. As for Volvo, it was taking relatively small steps, but it, too, had an EV ready for the market. That came in the form of the 2011 C30 Electric, a limited-run model made specifically for fleet customers and not necessarily for the public. Okay, it's not like the mass rollout of Nissan and Tesla, and it was simply a C30 hatchback with its engine swapped out for an electric motor. About 250 of these were made, and Volvo claimed they were made for harsh winters. Well, they are Swedish, after all. Volvo Specs, Anyone?Obviously, it's no Tesla fighter and a pretty docile car by all means. If anything, it shows just how far EVs have come since the C30 Electric was first introduced. Its battery capacity was a mere 24kWh, and modern plug-in hybrids have larger capacities than that these days. The car uses lithium-ion batteries that are recharged via a regular 230-volt power socket. No fast charging here, folks. Of course, fast chargers and superchargers weren't really a thing in 2011. The world's charging infrastructure back then was nothing like today. In that case, you needed to take 6 to 10 hours to fully charge it from empty. Fully topped up, you got 101 miles of range according to official paperwork, but Volvo's own estimates are a more conservative 93 miles. Performance-wise, it's obviously no hot hatch. The single electric motor churns out 111 hp and 162 lb-ft of torque. Volvo didn't bother publishing its 0 to 60 mph time, but they did say that its EV hatchback could do 0 to 43 mph in 6 seconds. Meanwhile, its top speed was capped at 80 mph. Volvo Electrified Volvos TodayLooking at the Volvo lineup now, all its products have some form of electrification. Standard models are equipped with mild-hybrid systems, while plug-in hybrids remain a popular choice in Europe. Of course, the company now has a barrage of EVs with the XC40 Recharge (now called EX40) being its first mass-market electric model. Today, Volvo has four mild-hybrid models, four plug-in hybrids, and six full-electric vehicles. Its most recent model is the EX60, which slots in between the flagship EX90 and EX40 and completes the company's range of EV crossovers. When the C30 Electric was launched, Volvo reckoned that EVs would capture 5 to 10 percent of the EU market by 2025. Last year, EVs accounted for 19.5 percent of all new-car purchases on the continent, twice what the company had initially predicted. Throw in hybrid and plug-in hybrid sales, and it's well past 50 percent in Europe. Volvo Volvo View the 7 images of this gallery on the original article View the full article

Volkswagen Gives W12-Powered Golf GTI Fresh Paint for 50th Anniversary
Back in 2007, in a moment of because-we-can silliness that mass market car companies could only justify in those heady pre-financial crash days, Volkswagen decided to stuff one of its almighty W12 engines into the middle of a fifth-generation Golf GTI for a one-off show car. Why? Partly, it was a treat for GTI fans attending the now-dead GTI Treffen fan gathering in Wörthersee, Austria that year, but mainly, we suspect it was because some VW engineers had some free time and a spare W12 sitting around in a workshop somewhere. Although called a ‘design study’, the car, known as the Golf GTI W12-650, was fully functional, and was even slid around the Top Gear Test Track by Jeremy Clarkson, but it largely disappeared from the public view following its moment in the spotlight – until now. VW has brought the car out of retirement to mark the Golf GTI’s 50th birthday, and not only that, it’s been given a bit of a makeover. The Ultimate Mashup Volkswagen The beating heart of the W12-650 was the 6.0-liter W12 engine that the VW group was stuffing into its biggest, most luxurious cars at the time, including the Audi A8 and ill-fated VW Phaeton. The Golf concept, though, borrowed the version from the Bentley Continental GT, which threw a pair of turbochargers into the equation for a total of 641 HP (650 PS, hence the name). Sending the power to the rear wheels via a seven-speed DSG auto, VW said it was hypothetically capable of hitting 62 MPH in 3.7 seconds and maxing out at 202 MPH, but we doubt anyone was ever brave enough to try. A special aluminum subframe was installed to allow the engine to fit the gigantic engine, and to quench the powerplant’s enormous thirst for cool air, the Golf’s body was widened by nearly five inches so two giant intakes could be fitted. It rode 2.75 inches lower than standard, too. To try and make this Frankenstein’s concoction even remotely driveable, VW looked elsewhere in its empire for other high-performance bits, including the rear brakes and rear axle from a Lamborghini Gallardo and front brakes from an Audi RS4. This didn’t really do much to tame something the length of a Golf with a huge 12-cylinder engine sending 641 HP to the rear wheels, but the thought was there. A Surprise Rebirth Volkswagen After doing the rounds in all the car publications of the day and having its moment at Wörthersee, the W12-650 was squirrelled away in a storage unit somewhere to gather dust. Until now, that is. The Golf GTI celebrating its milestone 50th birthday in 2026, and that naturally means lots of celebrations. As part of this, VW has recommissioned three GTI concepts from over the years. Two are the roadster and hatchback concepts it designed as part of the Vision Gran Turismo program, but the third is the W12-650, which has even had a bit of a makeover for the occasion. Okay, that ‘makeover’ appears to amount to a fresh coat of paint – rather than the original white, it’s now the same hue of Tornado Red as the not-for-the-US Golf GTI Edition 50 – but it’s nevertheless nice to see this wild creation out and about again, as a reminder of the ambition and financial freedom that characterised the VW Group of the noughties.
