Volkswagen’s Golf GTI and R Will Stay Gas-Powered for Years to Come
Volkswagen has reiterated its commitment to the combustion-powered hot hatch, a commitment that will extend into the next decade. The EA888 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that powers the Golf GTI and Golf R (among other VW products) is being developed to conform to new emissions regulations in Europe. This development project will run concurrently with Volkswagen's rollout of new all-electric GTI models, reports the U.K.'s Auto Express. The publication spoke with VW's head of chassis development and driving dynamics, Sebastian Willmann, who said that while the engine needs some updates, VW is working hard to "bring the engine to Euro 7 [standards]." And those updates may come with more power. VW Needs to Work Fast to Keep Combustion Alive Volkswagen Willmann did not reveal what changes the EA888 requires to be compliant with the new regulations, but VW will have to act quickly to implement whatever improvements the new rules require because they come into effect in November of this year. Such an overhaul can bring the added bonus of more power, and when talking about the Golf R and its 328-horsepower maximum, he acknowledged that there is "some room for improvement," adding, "Let's see what, over time, is possible." With Mercedes-AMG's A 45 S and Audi's RS 3 both playing in the 400-hp ballpark, a new Golf R could do with a bump, as long as the price isn't too high for a VW-badged product. "[At] VW, we must deliver on all aspects," said Willmann. "We need efficient cars, we need performance cars — like the Golf R or the GTI — and we need some cheaper cars, and cars which are positioned higher." Hybrid VW Hot Hatches Seem Inevitable Volkswagen Around the middle of last year, Volkswagen CEO Thomas Schäfer already confirmed that there would be a "strong presence" of combustion-powered vehicles in the 2030s, adding that they will be "probably a little bit electrified." The company boss did not explain whether this would mean plug-in hybrids or mild-hybrids, but it would make sense for larger vehicles like the Tiguan to feature the former setup. In smaller vehicles like the Golf GTI and Golf R, where space is minimal and deft handling is paramount to the experience, the latter approach seems a shoo-in. Rebuilding a Wrecked Ferrari 812 Shows Why Cheap Supercars Are a Myth

Across the wider YouTube car scene, he has pushed the idea that even the most exotic machinery can be tackled outside traditional dealer networks, including experiments around 3D-printing hypercar parts. Bugatti has publicly explained why that thinking does not apply to a Chiron, citing material science and safety-critical tolerances. That context matters because Armstrong’s Ferrari 812 Superfast rebuild sits squarely between internet optimism and engineering reality. When new, the Ferrari 812 Superfast carried a price tag of around $335,275 in 2017, firmly placing it in six-figure territory before options. Armstrong’s example promised access to that V12 experience for far less, though the exact purchase price was never disclosed. With just 9,000 miles and listed as running and driving, it looked like a calculated risk. That illusion faded quickly once oil was found in the intake and the dipstick revealed milky contamination, raising immediate concerns about internal engine damage. Engine Anxiety Before Any RebuildRather than rushing to fire it up, Armstrong and his team focused on understanding whether the 6.5-liter naturally aspirated V12 could be saved. All twelve spark plugs were removed, and each cylinder was inspected with a camera to check for oil or water that could cause hydraulic lock. Attention quickly turned to the PCV system, along with the possibility that the car had been tipped forward during the crash or recovery, forcing oil and water into places they should never reach. Repeated oil drains confirmed the worst suspicions, with thick, caramel-colored fluid pouring out. Despite this, the cylinders themselves were clean, and the engine ran without catastrophic noise. Through multiple oil flushes, clearing the breather lines, and correcting damaged oil-cooler plumbing, the V12 gradually stabilized. It was enough to justify continuing the project, even though the true source of the contamination was not immediately obvious. What initially looked like front-end damage included bent aluminum chassis legs, distorted mounting points, and a crushed radiator pack. Inside the cabin, modern Ferrari complexity became unavoidable. All airbags had deployed, seatbelts were locked, and crash data was stored in control modules that required specialist resetting. Wrapping the car in green consumed significant time and eventually required professional help. The final tally reached roughly 54 hours, involving multiple skilled hands across different disciplines. While rebuilding a wrecked Ferrari may look like a shortcut into the supercar world, the manpower, specialist skills, and sheer hours involved suggest it is rarely a bargain. With the purchase price for the wrecked vehicle undisclosed, it is difficult to judge the true savings, if there are any. In practical terms, sourcing a clean used example at auction may have made more sense. Armstrong’s 812 is somewhat of a success story, but it also shows that buying the car is only the beginning. Using devices disguised as Bluetooth speakers purchased on the dark web, criminals inject false messages into the network that trick vehicles into believing a genuine key fob is present. This disables the immobilizer and unlocks doors in under two minutes without needing the actual key. Unlike older relay attacks requiring proximity to real keys, CAN injection completely bypasses smart key systems by exploiting unencrypted communication networks inside the car. Toyota Recalls GR Supra Over Starter Motor Issue, Urges Owners Not to Leave Cars Unattended

Both versions could potentially be affected, given that the company only discontinued the inline-four option for the 2025 model year, a move widely attributed to low consumer demand. Both engines are sourced from BMW, which helps explain why the GR Supra and the BMW Z4 share numerous mechanical similarities—though that partnership remains polarizing among some enthusiasts. To determine whether their vehicle is affected, Toyota says owners can enter their VIN on the company’s website or through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) recall lookup tool. However, because this is a voluntary recall, the specifics of this particular case may not yet be reflected in the federal agency's database. Toyota Owners Get a Heads-UpAs a remedy, Toyota dealers will replace the starter motor with an improved unit at no cost to customers, with owner recall notifications scheduled to begin in late March 2026. Until then, owners are advised not to leave their vehicles running unattended, particularly given the potential risk of vehicle fire. The GR Supra recall follows a separate safety campaign involving more than 162,000 Tundra pickups over a rearview camera defect that violates a federal safety standard. Toyota’s Super Bowl Ad Celebrates 30 Years of the RAV4 Through One Family
Very few automakers are getting involved in this year's Super Bowl, and Toyota and Cadillac are the exceptions. The latter will be presenting its livery for its debut in the upcoming Formula One season, while the former is focusing on family and three decades of the RAV4. The ad was put together by the advertising agency Saatchi & Saatchi and is titled Superhero Belt. You can watch the 30-second spot for the big game further down in this article, but the title refers to the term that the ad's grandfather uses with his grandchild at the beginning of the clip to get him to see buckling up in a first-gen RAV4 as a positive. 30 years later, in the latest iteration of the RAV4, the grandson uses the term with his ancestor, bringing the story full circle. The Superhero Belt Toyota The clip begins with the grandfather grabbing a set of car keys off a counter, inviting his grandson to go for a drive before hoisting him into the rear of the first-generation XA10 RAV4 (first appearing in 1994 in Japan and 1996 in the U.S.). Once the grandson is in the child seat, the grandfather buckles him up with the "superhero belt." Fast forward three decades, and the grandson is the one encouraging a pleasure cruise. After helping his grandfather into the front passenger seat, he walks around to the driver's side and makes a similar comment to the one his grandad used all those years ago: "Superhero belt?" The grandfather smiles and buckles up, and off they set. It's a wholesome clip that highlights how a car can be a medium for encouraging personal connections that last a lifetime. As noted by Carscoops, director Rodrigo Saavedra's goal was to show that "people are the destination." Similarly, Toyota Motor North America VP of Marketing Communications, Dedra DeLilli, said, "At Toyota, we believe the most meaningful journeys aren't defined by where you're going, but by who is beside you along the way. Superhero Belt captures how vehicles can become part of the moments and relationships that shape us, connecting generations through everyday experiences." The RAV4 Is an Important Part of Car Culture Toyota The RAV4, or Recreational Active Vehicle with 4WD, may have been viewed by some as a wannabe off-roader in its early days, with the original sitting on a Corolla platform and being powered by the Camry's 120-horsepower four-pot. But buyers quickly learned that it was a capable hauler with car-like handling and a commanding driving position, and Toyota later added a two-door soft-top model. It got more power and a more conventional look for its second generation, and it continued to evolve through subsequent revisions, but as it changed, it continued to collect happy buyers, becoming a best-seller for Toyota, both in the U.S. and globally, ending 2024 with some 475,000 deliveries to American buyers. It managed nearly half a million sales last year, too. The lustrous shade brings to life one of the most stunning convertibles in the world right now. Cole Pesz Captures $40,000 “Cinderella” Win at U.S. Street Nationals
In what was undoubtedly the greatest example of perseverance at the U.S. Street Nationals presented by M&M Transmission, Cole Pesz went from the doctor’s office to the winner’s circle at Bradenton Motorsports Park. Just a few days after crashing the screw-blown ‘18 Corvette owned by Mark Gobert during pre-race testing, Pesz navigated five grueling rounds in the $40,000-to-win True 10.5 class at the Drag Illustrated Winter Series presented by J&A Service. What began as a devastating setback early in the week quickly turned into a full-scale thrash, as Pesz and his crew – along with members of other race teams – worked tirelessly to rebuild the car in time for competition. Despite limited runs and lingering physical pain, Pesz ran through a gauntlet of some of the toughest names in small-tire racing to secure the win. “This is truly a Cinderella story,” said Pesz. “It’s unbelievable, to be honest with you. I’ve been in a lot worse positions in my life than crashing a race car. It’s the story of my life. I’ve always gotten over the peak.” The victory was especially meaningful for Pesz, who was still dealing with the loss of his grandmother last September – a moment he noted marked the last time he’d stood in the winner’s circle prior to Bradenton. “We came out here at Snowbirds last month and I thought I was going to get it done, but we hung the throttle and…there’s always some little thing,” Pesz said. “Then we get here and it wasn’t so little – it was a big thing. But when we got back and evaluated the car, it wasn’t as bad as it looked. The car was built very well. Our whole team came together, looked at each other and said, ‘We got this.’” In addition to fixing the car, Pesz also had to be medically cleared in order to compete. While he believed he was okay physically, Pesz was grateful for the concern shown by event officials in putting his health and safety first, and was willing to do whatever was necessary to get back in the driver’s seat. “I don’t really have a switch that turns off,” Pesz admitted. “Sometimes that’s a good thing and sometimes it’s a really bad thing. I respect Wes [Buck] saying, ‘Hey man, you need to go to the ER and make sure you don’t have a concussion. You need to get checked out.’ That’s why I love this family – they’re looking out for me when I’m not looking out for myself.” Pesz’s path to victory during eliminations was anything but easy, drawing a stacked lineup of competitors including Scott Taylor, Ryan Hendrickson, Kye Kelley, Ryan Martin, and Brandon Sandlian in the Junkyard Studebaker. Pesz consistently ran in the high 3.90 to low 4.00 range all weekend, culminating with a 3.980-second pass at 204.76 mph in the finals against Sandlian, who went 4.132, but was -.087 red on the tree. “Just to be in this position is crazy,” said Pesz. “We didn’t get any ducks. We didn’t see a purpose in trying to break the record in the final round – we just left it alone and did our job. He went red, but I still wanted to see what it was going to run because we only have maybe 11 passes at this point.” The win was the result of a massive team effort, with Pesz quick to acknowledge all the companies who have supported him – PJS Racing Engines, FuelTech EFI, M&M Transmission, Menscer Motorsports, Strange Engineering, Stroud Safety, Nitrous Outlet, Quick Performance, and Wiles Driveshafts – as well as all the individuals who stepped up during the hectic rebuild. “This would not have happened without Mark Woodruff loaning me his wheels, Cameron Johnson Race Cars getting us a wishbone in time, and Patrick Miller literally bending my headers back out with a jack and a torch for 10 hours rewelding it all,” Pesz said. “Everyone here just thrashing on this thing, and Brandon Pesz – the best motherf***er on the planet, I don’t care what anybody says. We’re gonna go home and fine-tune it, but I genuinely believe we have one of the fastest cars out here.” The victory also marked a major milestone for Pesz, as it was his first win with car owner Mark Gobert. Standing in the winner’s circle, Pesz gave Gobert the special True 10.5 winner’s diamond chain to show his appreciation for the opportunity, even after the adversity they faced during the week. “Mark is the real deal, and now he’s got some bling around his neck too” said Pesz. “The way he treats people is unbelievable. I have the greatest owner. He and his wife, René – they believe in me. They trust me. This is 100% their win. It’s their win just as much as it is mine. They’re the backbone behind this team.” While Pesz was ecstatic about the $40k and event trophy that went along with it, he admitted the win carried a deeper message that he wants to use his platform to share – a message of perseverance, gratitude, and faith. “This whole week was about not giving up,” Pesz said. “Whether we lost first round or won the race, it didn’t matter. It’s about proving a point to the younger kids out there that feel like giving up on themselves, or the men and women who feel the same way. I want to encourage you to continue to push through adversity. It’s not gonna go away – the adversity will always be there. It’s part of life. You’re gonna go through peaks and valleys, trials and tribulations. I just encourage everybody to try to find God and go for everything you want in life. I’m truly nothing without the people God has put my life. I’m extremely grateful for that. I wouldn’t be able to do this without my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” With momentum on his side, Pesz is already looking ahead to defending his True 10.5 title Feb. 26-28 at the Drag Illustrated World Series of Pro Mod, the final race of the 2025/26 DI Winter Series. “This is how we’re starting off 2026,” said Pesz. “I knew there were going to be trials and tribulations, but hey, it is what it is. Shelby Teases a Single-Cab F-150 Super Snake Built From Ford’s Simplest Truck
Earlier this month, Ford revealed the Dark Horse SC as the spiritual successor to the S550 Shelby GT500 in everything but name. Meanwhile, Shelby American has been trying to steal the Blue Oval's limelight with the Super Snake, the GT350, and most recently, the GT350/TA, and it's not done yet. The company showcased all three of these Mustang-based marvels at Barrett-Jackson this month, but it also provided a real-life teaser of yet another monster, the F-150 Super Snake Sport, and it's coming soon; Shelby teasers are usually followed by the finished product very quickly. The upcoming super truck was under a white cover with blue Cobra stripes, and the company's website now shows the silhouette of a single-cab pickup under a tarpaulin with a reversed color scheme. What We Know About the 2026 F-150 Super Snake Shelby American Shelby's recent Facebook post about the pickup doesn't reveal what the F-150 Super Snake Sport will be made up of, but we can look to the past for clues. The 2025 F-150 Super Snake was a double-cab pickup with up to 785 horsepower from a supercharged V8, which breathed through a pair of nostrils on the hood. This new teaser depicts a regular-cab pickup, which Ford only sells in simplified XL trim as a no-frills work truck, but its basic starting point is no problem for Shelby, which typically reupholsters the interior and redesigns the bodywork. Upgrading performance is no issue either, since the F-150 XL is available with the same 5.0-liter Coyote V8 that Shelby loves to slap a Whipple supercharger on. Bigger wheels, more aggressive bodywork, a more lavish interior, and a rorty exhaust go without saying, but Shelby's page for the truck has a curious detail, with the draped silhouette exhibiting a bulge behind the door. What this signifies is anyone's guess, but we needn't speculate much longer. Expect Shelby's Angriest Truck to Debut Imminently Shelby American/Facebook It's unlikely that Shelby will launch its fourth vehicle this month (tomorrow is the last day), but it will almost certainly arrive before the end of February. Don't expect the F-150 Super Snake Sport's humble beginnings to mean a low price, though. While the F-150 XL Regular Cab starts at $39,330 in 4x2 form, Shelby's paint, bodywork, and interior enhancements will undoubtedly push the truck into six-figure territory. Meanwhile, the F-150 Lobo street truck, based on the STX, is priced around $60,000 before options, but it leaves the Coyote V8 untouched. Toyota Says Switching to Tesla’s Plug More Than Doubles Fast-Charging Access
Toyota is framing its move to the North American Charging Standard as a full ownership upgrade rather than a simple connector swap. The company says the real work sits behind the port, because drivers only feel the benefit when access, payment, and reliability are handled smoothly across different charging networks. What Changes For Drivers In 2026Toyota says its 2026 battery electric models will come with a factory NACS inlet, starting with the 2026 Toyota bZ and the 2026 Lexus RZ. For earlier models, Toyota says 2023 through 2025 bZ4X and 2023 through 2025 Lexus RZ owners can use a CCS to NACS adapter for DC fast charging. Toyota also says it is including adapters so drivers can use both CCS and NACS fast chargers, while still staying compatible with J1772 for Level 2 charging through a separate adapter, which keeps home and public charging flexible as the market remains mixed. The company says it tested adapters through extreme temperature exposure, repeated connection cycles, drops while frozen, muddy saltwater exposure, and real world abuse scenarios like cable trips, and it even describes an adapter surviving being run over by a roughly two ton battery electric vehicle. Toyota also highlights a patent pending interlocking mechanism on its CCS to NACS adapter, which is intended to keep the connection secure between the vehicle, adapter, and charger. Ford Dealers Want Cheaper Cars to Take On Honda and Toyota
With over 2.2 million vehicles sold last year in the United States, a 6% increase, Ford doesn’t immediately seem like a brand in need of new products. Its truck and SUV ranges continue to do the heavy lifting, with strong 2025 sales. But dealers feel that there are at least two key models missing from Ford’s local lineup. Both are at the affordable end of the price spectrum, one being a sedan and one being a smaller SUV. Dealers believe rivals are seeing enough success in these categories to justify alternative offerings from Ford. This group includes the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Chevrolet Trax, and Subaru Crosstrek. All made the list of the top 20 best-selling models in the U.S. last year, and Ford has nothing to rival them. "As Ford dealers, we know that our truck lineup, our commercial vehicle lineup and our SUV lineup is the envy of the industry," said Steve Blasing, chairman of the Ford National Dealer Council, in an interview with Automotive News. "Everybody would love to have that lineup. But with that said, all the dealers will love to see an affordable SUV and a sedan that competes with the imports. So actually two." Presently, Ford doesn’t have any truly affordable subcompacts on sale. It ended production of the Escape late last year and the EcoSport has been gone for several years, which means its cheapest SUV is now the Bronco Sport with a starting price of $31,845—that’s a lot more than the subcompact Trax and Crosstrek. The automaker has no sedans, either, but Ford CEO Jim Farley said earlier this month that rising car prices mean the brand won’t rule out the return of the three-box body style. The Kia K4 and new Nissan Sentra demonstrate that there’s still very much demand for affordable small sedans. Five Affordable Fords On The Way Ford Late last year, Ford said it was working on launching five affordable models by 2030. One of these will be an electric pickup truck that’s expected to be priced at around the $30,000 mark. The Blue Oval’s new Universal EV platform could spawn other styles of cheaper EVs, too. If five new models are coming, we can safely assume at least two will be SUVs of some kind. But Ford isn’t limiting itself to affordable EVs. The brand also plans to release more hybrids, as it has fallen far behind its Korean and Japanese rivals in this category. It currently has nothing to compete with the likes of the Civic Hybrid or Corolla Cross Hybrid. Consumers are taking out longer car loans and grappling with higher interest rates, and the dearth of cars below the $25k mark is exacerbating the problem—just recently, the cheapest sedan in America, Nissan’s Versa, was discontinued. Expensive, highly specified pickup trucks continue to sell in large numbers, raising the average price of new cars. But some brands are responding, as Kia launched a new K4 Hatchback that starts at under $25,000. Audi Knows Its New Grille Will Be Mocked — And That’s the Point
Brands Are Chasing Visual IdentityLuxury carmakers are leaning harder than ever on design to stand apart. As electric platforms flatten differences in performance and packaging, styling has become a primary marketing weapon. Audi’s new vertical grille, first shown on the Concept C, sits at the center of that strategy. It is bold, upright, and impossible to ignore. Unsurprisingly, it has already become meme fuel, with online comparisons focusing on its narrow proportions and historically loaded facial resemblance to one of history's most well-documented tyrants, Audi would probably rather not see trending. The move marks a decisive break from the wide Singleframe grille that defined Audi for nearly two decades. That design was also mocked when it first appeared, yet it eventually became Audi’s visual calling card. Now the brand is willing to reset its identity again, even if it invites ridicule. In a crowded luxury market, Audi seems to believe recognition matters more than consensus approval. Controversy Is Better Than ApathyAudi design chief Massimo Frascella has made it clear that brand identity is the priority. Speaking to German publication Auto Motor und Sport, Frascella said Audi wants its vehicles recognized as Audi before anything else. “Every car needs its own character,” he explained, adding that this comes from proportions, surface treatment, and especially the face and lighting signature. That thinking helps explain Audi’s willingness to push a polarizing new grille across its lineup. Recognition, not universal approval, is the goal. Frascella has also signaled a broader shift in philosophy inside the cabin. He has openly criticized the industry’s reliance on oversized interior screens, describing them as technology added for its own sake. According to Frascella, large displays can distract from the driving experience rather than enhance it. Future Audis will focus on better balance, cleaner layouts, and more physical controls. Audi Audi Helped Start the Big Grille EraThere is a clear irony in the backlash Audi is facing. The brand helped normalize oversized grilles in the modern luxury era. When Audi introduced the Singleframe grille in the mid-2000s, critics dismissed it as excessive and overly aggressive. Many said it dominated the front end and upset the car’s proportions. Audi stayed the course, and over time the look became accepted, then influential. That influence reshaped the segment. Large grilles became the norm rather than the exception. Rolls-Royce’s Second EV Is a New Luxury SUV, and It’s Bigger Than Expected
In 2024, Rolls-Royce achieved remarkably strong sales for its first all-electric product, the Spectre, and it made sense for Goodwood to pursue another EV. Sales have fallen sharply since then, with the company's CEO saying customers are more interested in V12-powered products that are heavily personalized. But this downturn isn't stopping the Spirit of Ecstasy from wafting its way down Electric Avenue, and the second, as-yet unnamed EV from Rolls-Royce, an SUV, has been spotted winter testing in Sweden wearing what appear to be near-production body panels and lighting systems. Initially expected to replace the popular Cullinan, our spies now report that this EV will grow the lineup. But there will be newness, with parent BMW Group's sixth-generation EV technology said to be integrated, potentially including the motors and batteries used in the impressive new iX3. That could mean up to 600 kilometers of range, or roughly 373 miles, though Rolls-Royce may offer less range since this new SUV will aim to compete with Bentley's upcoming Urban Luxury SUV, designed for well-heeled city dwellers. Our spies are told that several features will be touch-activated, like opening the hood or tailgate, and BMW has previously said its self-branded Neue Klasse vehicles will be capable of operating most functions via touch or voice, so the German automaker's influence in this new Rolls will be strong. At the back, its taillights are dead ringers for those on the combustion-powered SUV, but the front is most intriguing. This features what appears to be a full-width LED strip within which numerous individual light accents add texture. Unlike a Cullinan, the outer extremities of the lighting design have a curve that looks almost Ford F-150 Lightning-like in these images, with square headlight clusters lower down. The Spectre looks very similar to other Rolls-Royce products despite being an EV, but perhaps the company wants to evolve its look further. Feds Investigate Waymo After Autonomous Taxi Hits Child in School Zone
The IncidentBack in January, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) received a report of a Waymo vehicle that struck a child in a school zone. The incident occurred on January 23, 2026, and Waymo sent its required report to NHTSA on January 28, 2026. Parents reading this can breathe a sigh of relief. Considering the nature of the accident, the child, reportedly, sustained minor injuries. No injuries would have been ideal, but this situation could've been much worse. Per the report, "the child ran across the street from behind a double-parked SUV towards the school and was struck by the Waymo AV." Waymo Opening the InvestigationWith that, NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) unit will be taking a closer look at the factors that caused the accident. Given that the incident involved a child, it's an extremely serious matter, and the ODI will see if the autonomous system acted and reacted properly at the time of said incident. On top of that, the ODI will investigate the behavior of Waymo's autonomous taxis in school zones and neighboring areas, especially during school pick-up and drop-off times. The Waymo vehicle involved was using the company's 5th Generation Automated Driving System, and there was no safety driver in the taxi. Waymo Bugs and Glitches?With autonomous driving tech still relatively new, there will likely be a few things that still need to be ironed out. Waymo is no exception to that, and there have been a couple of incidents recorded since its operation. There have been reports of fender benders and an instance of cars being confused in certain situations. 3,000 taxis were also recalled after it was found that some of them were failing to stop for school buses. Statistically, these autonomous taxis are safer, but they've been involved in high-profile incidents that blunt their safety record. But accidents such as this should make them even safer down the line, as findings of the investigation should serve as a lesson for all involved in autonomous mobility. Lexus Defies Luxury Market Trends With Record Global Sales in 2025
While Japanese luxury brands like Infiniti struggle to recapture their former glory, due in part to a slow rate of electrification, Lexus soared once again on the sales charts last year. Throughout 2025, Lexus sold 882,231 vehicles globally, a new annual record for the manufacturer. Last year’s sales were up by 4% over 2024, and contributed to the Toyota Group being the world’s best-selling automaker for the sixth consecutive year, with a total of 10.3 million vehicles sold. Once again, North America proved to be the biggest market for Lexus, and all but one major region saw growth for the brand. The other biggest regions for Lexus were Asia (237,946 sales), Japan (87,418), and Europe (80,686). All markets grew besides Europe, where sales declined by 2.3% relative to 2024. Lexus attributed strong sales in North America to SUVs like the RX, NX, and TX. The former two have been around for a few years now, but continue to thrive, while the TX finally gave Lexus a strong three-row crossover contender. In the U.S., sales of the TX increased by over 100% in 2025, with 57,346 units sold. The tough GX also saw growth of over 20% here. Strong SUV sales helped account for declining sedan sales, as Lexus sedans were down 6% in the U.S. in 2025. However, the all-new Lexus ES should change this. Set to go on sale in March 2026, it will be available with both hybrid and fully electric powertrains. Excluding Mini and Rolls-Royce, the BMW Group sold 2,169,761 vehicles in 2025, more than double what Lexus managed. However, this was a 1.4% decline, so the two brands were a little closer last year than in 2024. The Mercedes-Benz Group, meanwhile, sold 2,160,000 cars and vans in 2025. However, a more accurate figure for comparison is the number of Mercedes cars sold, which totaled 1,800,800 units (-9%), still well clear of Lexus. Finally, Audi delivered 1.6 million vehicles globally, a decline of 3% but still ahead of Lexus. Lexus may not have the global numbers of these brands, but it was the only one to see sales growth last year.
