The week started with new drivers, crew chiefs, and teams, plus record breaking performances in testing, and ended with big wins and happy fans. This is the start of a whole new year of NHRA Drag Racing and we know this season is going to be something special. We’ve got great action photos from Gainesville thanks to longtime contributor David Whealon. David was in Florida shooting all kinds of fun stuff at the Gatornationals and sent us a whole bunch of his favorites. I’ve raced and announced a fair amount in the state of Florida and can tell you that the fans there are awesome, and they came out in force this past weekend. Scott Sullivan is one of the most iconic car builders of the 1980s and 1990s. After building what many considered to be the first Pro Street car, his 1967 Nova, and several other iconic machines after, many people give him credit for starting the movement. Regardless of whether he was first or not, his name belongs on a list of 5-10 builders who really turned the world on its ear and started something new. Pro Street is, and will always be, something special because of all these great builders like Dobbertin, Robertson, Hay, Grimes, Saboury, and more. What was initially supposed to be a one-race opportunity has quickly turned into something much bigger for fan-favorite driver Lyle Barnett. Fresh off an ultra-impressive showing throughout the Drag Illustrated Winter Series presented by J&A Service, Barnett got the call to step in for NHRA Pro Mod Drag Racing Series championship contender Billy Banaka at the JBS Equipment NHRA Pro Mod Drag Racing Series presented by Elite Motorsports season opener, the 57th annual Amalie Motor Oil NHRA Gatornationals in Gainesville, Florida. Barnett made the most of it. Driving Banaka’s hot rod against one of the toughest Pro Mod fields in the country, Barnett qualified No. 6 with a strong 5.732-second pass at 249.86 mph, then marched all the way to the final round in a statement-making performance that turned heads throughout the pit area. Along the way, Barnett also recorded top speed of the meet at 252.24 mph, further cementing his presence as one of the weekend’s biggest stories. Barnett’s charge to the final ended in dramatic fashion, as he turned it oh-so-slightly red in the final round against Derek Menholt. Still, the runner-up finish, coupled with the performance and consistency shown throughout eliminations, made it clear this was no fluke and no ordinary fill-in appearance. As it turns out, Gainesville was only the beginning. In an effort to capitalize on Barnett’s popularity, momentum, and rising star power, Mark Stockseth and the rapidly growing Outlaw Light Beer brand have stepped in with a new sponsorship partnership that will keep Barnett in NHRA Pro Mod competition for the foreseeable future. The new deal will see Barnett remain with Billy Banaka Racing on a multi-race basis during the 2026 NHRA Pro Mod season, beginning with the fast-approaching NHRA Arizona Nationals in Phoenix. The move also speaks volumes about Banaka’s commitment to winning and to growing the program. What was originally planned as a one-race arrangement quickly evolved once the opportunity presented itself. I’ve been doing drag and drive events for 21 years now, and have been very vocal over the years about what it takes to be successful when it comes to completing these events and having a good time. There are many topics that we’ve discussed, about all different aspects of these events, but one that I am not sure folks listen to enough is heat management. Everyone knows they need a good cooling system, but there is more to it than just that. It’s one thing to be able to drive down the road at 65 for an hour. Four hours on the other hand is a completely different thing. Here’s why. When you drive your car down the road for an hour, the engine is at operating temp and things under the hood are warm, but the longer you drive the hotter all the other things in the car get. As all those things heat soak, it becomes harder and harder to get heat out of the engine compartment. At that point, things that don’t have active cooling start having to work harder. Think about ignition components, throttle bodies, intake manifolds, fittings, pumps, electronics, etc. The engine has fluid running through it and your radiator, working together to keep the engine at the temp you want. But all the things that are bolted to the engine, or that surround it in the engine bay, don’t have a cooling system. They have whatever hot air is traveling through the engine compartment, and nothing else. Those components rely heavily on their ability to work in those temps, or on insulative and reflective products to keep them from getting hot in the first place. That’s where exhaust heat shields become important, especially in a turbocharged application where downpipes can get glowing hot in the worst conditions. So how do you combat heat on your downpipes? Wraps, solid shields, and everything in between have been used for years. But how about those factory style embossed stainless shields? Can you install those yourself on your own ride? I know that we live in a time where it seems like we get to see every bit of racing that we want to, but the truth is that a ton of it is behind a pay wall now that means seeing all of it is expensive, if not hard. But in the 1990s and early 2000s there were cable tv channels that had shows and racing coverage about every kind of racing you could imagine. One of the hottest series in the world, and one that intrigued those of us in North America to no end, was the British Touring Car Championships. The cars, mundane 4 door sedans that were relatable to most Europeans, were turned into incredibly capable race cars that could often be seen with at least one wheel in the air going around corners. But that wasn’t what made it exciting. What made BTCC exciting was the door handle to door handle racing that very, very often including trading paint and off-track excursions. It was a riot to watch because you took 4-door sedans and raced them in a way that was arguably more aggressive than any other wheel to wheel racing in existence at the time. And I might argue that this was some of the most aggressive racing in motorsports history. It was awesome, fun, and I couldn’t stop watching. And either could anyone else. A series that was so relatable to the average motorsport fan. The salesman rep car parked on their drive was the bedroom poster car on the weekend. I’ve use a lot of different methods for removing suspension bushings, but this one makes me question whether one of those methods was ever done correctly. I remember removing bushings by drilling a bunch of holes around the bushing, but I never used a drill bit quite like this before. Have you tried this method? Do you have a better one? One year after setting the top speed of eliminations at 330.88 mph in his Fry’s Food Stores Top Fuel Dragster, Phoenix native Travis Shumake will return to Firebird Motorsports Park in a completely different, but far more personal machine. For the first time in his professional career, the NHRA Top Fuel driver will compete behind the wheel of a Funny Car during the FMP NHRA Arizona Nationals presented by NGK Spark plugs, March 20-22, 2026. The second-generation professional drag racer will be driving Dave Benjamin’s Nostalgia Funny Car in a special hometown appearance backed by longtime partner Fry’s Food Stores. Shumake, who is licensed in several NHRA categories, will make the debut just weeks before the NHRA is set to honor his late father, Tripp Shumake, during the 1,000th Funny Car race at the upcoming NHRA Winternationals in Pomona, an event Shumake has not ruled out attending. The elder Shumake’s 1981 Southern Nationals victory behind the wheel of Johnny Loper’s Phoenix-based “Little Hoss” Funny Car marked the 100th Funny Car win in NHRA history. “I actually started out trying to follow my dad tire tracks into a Funny Car when I began my racing career,” explained Shumake. “The twists and turns of this off-season put me in a position where I can get back to my roots and celebrate my dad’s milestone in a very direct way. I am excited to get back into competition and back to literally the roots of the Funny Car class.” Shumake’s Fry’s Food Stores Top Fuel Dragster will also be on display at Firebird Motorsports Park as part of an interactive activation with Kroger Health’s Team Tune Up program, a partnership that will continue beyond the Phoenix race weekend.
