  1. Norway has just done something no other country has managed: it ended 2025 with 95.9% of all new passenger cars registered as fully electric, a figure even officials round up to “96% of the new car market.” December was closer to 98% EV share, making combustion a statistical rounding error rather than a real segment. Norway’s EV Tipping PointNew-car registrations jumped roughly 40% versus 2024 as buyers rushed to beat stiffer EV taxes that arrive in 2026. That surge pushed total sales to around 180,000 cars, and nearly all of them were battery-electric. Plug-in hybrids have faded into the background; the market has essentially gone straight from gas and diesel to full EVs. Policy mix-ups are behind it with steep purchase taxes on combustion cars, generous exemptions for EVs, cheaper tolls and ferries, plus abundant home and public charging. After years of that pressure, Norway effectively hit its long-standing goal of ending fossil new-car sales by 2025. At the same time, the government is now dialing back the generosity by adding some VAT to pricey EVs, which is why so many buyers pulled the trigger before year’s end. It’s also happening at a moment when the rest of the world is still deciding how far and how fast to push. Automakers are lining up fresh metal for 2026, from mass-market crossovers to high-end flagships, and a lot of what’s coming looks directly aimed at buyers in cold, EV-dense markets like Norway. You can already see the next wave in our preview of the new EVs we’re most excited about in 2026. View the 2 images of this gallery on the original article Tesla Rides The Last Big Incentive WaveNo brand benefited more from Norway’s final pre-tax rush than Tesla. It was the country’s best-selling marque for the fifth year running, with a market share of about 19% and more than 27,000 new Teslas registered. The Model Y was the star, effectively becoming the default family car in a place that used to be dominated by diesel wagons and compact crossovers. Tesla’s momentum is striking because it comes as the company faces softer demand elsewhere in Europe. In Norway, though, the combination of strong incentives, dense Supercharger coverage and years of familiarity made the brand a safe bet when buyers knew the tax rules were about to tighten. Chinese-built EVs are also growing fast, but Tesla remains the reference point for everything from pricing to charging expectations. Norwegian buyers are also acutely aware that EVs have to survive real winters. Range loss, traction and heating performance matter more at −10°C than they do on a mild California freeway. That is why cars that perform well in snow and cold stand out. The more interesting question now is what Norway does with all this stored energy on wheels. With EVs now outnumbering diesels in the total passenger-car fleet, the country is in a good position to explore vehicle-to-grid projects at scale. If other markets follow the same trajectory, there is real potential for parked EVs to become part of the energy system rather than just a load on it. View the full article

  3. Not Your Usual UrusOne of the ultra-rare Lamborghinis of the modern era, the Urus Performante Essenza SCV12 Edition, is listed for sale on duPont Registry. If the nameplate doesn’t ring a bell, that’s entirely understandable. This special-edition Urus was offered exclusively to the 40 owners of the Essenza SCV12, effectively making any broader marketing effort unnecessary. Derived from the Aventador platform, the Essenza SCV12 is a track-only hypercar introduced in 2020. It uses the same 6.5-liter naturally aspirated V12, tuned to produce 830 horsepower. The Italian marque later translated that extreme, motorsport-inspired identity into the Urus Performante Essenza SCV12 Edition, offering its 40 owners a street-legal, Essenza-inspired vehicle. Compared to the $2.5-million track-only hypercar, the SUV provides greater everyday usability for public roads, while still benefiting from a more accommodating cabin thanks to the Urus’ SUV platform. duPont Registry on Facebook A Nod to a MasterpieceThis particular example has registered 7,687 miles on the odometer and is powered by a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8. The engine shares its core architecture with models such as the Audi RS Q8 and the third-generation Porsche Cayenne, though Lamborghini applies its own calibration. Carrying the Performante badge, the powertrain is tuned to deliver 657 horsepower. As standard, the SUV employs an all-wheel-drive system paired with an 8-speed ZF 8HP automatic transmission. The real appeal of this limited-edition variant, however, lies in its visual enhancements. Finished in Nero Helene Metallic, the exterior is fitted with an exposed carbon-fiber widebody kit supplied by 1016 Industries, along with custom black forged 24-inch wheels. Inside, the black-themed cabin pays direct homage to the track-only hypercar, featuring Essenza SCV12 logos on the dashboard and door sills. duPont Registry on Facebook Designed for the Inner CircleWhile duPont Registry has not publicly listed a price for this Urus Performante Essenza SCV12 Edition, the company notes that the vehicle is one of just seven examples allocated to the U.S. market. Interested buyers are encouraged to visit the luxury automotive marketplace’s website to request additional details. For reference, Lamborghini currently offers the Urus S with a starting price of around $240,000. The Urus – which competes with rivals such as the Ferrari Purosangue and the Aston Martin DBX – is also available in plug-in hybrid form. That electrified variant adds an electric motor to the mix, boosting total system output to 789 horsepower. duPont Registry on Facebook View the 4 images of this gallery on the original article View the full article
  4. If you’re planning on gliding into the new year behind the wheel of a luxury crossover, you can do worse than consider the BMW X3. The latest model has picked up where the old one left off, remaining one of BMW’s best-selling models alongside the larger X5. It’s comfortable, sporty, and high-tech. There are only two X3 trims available right now, but BMW is running lease deals on both for the month of January. Here’s a look at how much you’ll pay to lease one of BMW’s X3 luxury crossovers. Related: BMW X3 Generations Overview: From Ugly Duckling To Best-Seller This Month’s BMW X3 Lease Deals BMW The BMW X3’s lease price for this month starts at $599 per month over 39 months, with $5,239 due at signing. This deal applies to the base X3 30 xDrive variant, the only four-cylinder model in the lineup. The deal is based on qualifying for a $1,000 loyalty credit, applicable to customers who have owned or leased a BMW over the last 12 months. BMW includes 32,500 miles for the duration of the lease, with a fee of $0.25/mile for every additional mile over this limit. Not included are tax, title, licensing, and registration costs. The only other X3 on sale is the much more powerful M50, and its power advantage is reflected in its price. This BMW X3’s leasing offer is $789/month with $5,889 due at signing. Both these BMW X3 lease deals are applicable to California, so be sure to check BMW’s X3 lease offers with your zip code for potentially different deals in your area. If you’d rather purchase a new X3, it’ll cost you at least $51,300 for the X3 30 xDrive, increasing to $66,500 for the X3 M50 xDrive. Both models can also be financed at 1.99% APR for up to 60 months. Related: The 2026 BMW X3 Has Just Two Trims, But Only One Is The Smart Buy Powertrains and Features BMW The base BMW X3 has a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine with 255 horsepower. The quick eight-speed automatic and all-wheel-drive grip enable a six-second 0-60 time, so it’s far from slow. One step up is the M50 with a 3.0-liter six-cylinder turbo mill. It also has an eight-speed auto and AWD, but the 0-60 time is down to only 4.4 seconds, thanks to 393 hp. The base model has all the essentials equipped as standard. It comes with 19-inch alloy wheels, Veganza imitation leather upholstery, BMW’s Curved Display (with a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and 14.9-inch touchscreen), dual-zone automatic climate control, and heated front seats. The sporty M50 is distinguished by larger 20-inch wheels and Shadowline exterior trim. Under the skin, the more powerful engine is complemented by an M Sport differential, an adaptive M suspension, and M Sport brakes with blue calipers. Front sport seats that hold you in place more firmly form part of the M50’s interior upgrades, as well as the unique trim inserts of this derivative. Final ThoughtsThe X3 is perfectly positioned in the middle of BMW’s lineup. It’s not nearly as expensive as the larger X5 and X7, but distances itself from the smaller X1 with available six-cylinder power and greater refinement. It was a bit cheaper to lease the X3 last month ($569 over 39 months for the base model), but December is often associated with some of the year’s best deals. If you’re after something a bit more luxurious, the equivalent Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 4Matic is a little cheaper to lease this month ($569/month over 36 months with $5,203 down). However, the X3 has the edge for driving enjoyment, so keep that in mind if you’re after a more spirited commute. View the full article
  5. The Boxster Before the BoxsterIt may not have the same reverence as the 911, but the 914 has its place in Porsche history. Built as a spiritual successor to the 912 and Volkswagen Karmann Ghia Type 34, the 914 was actually a contractual obligation of Porsche from Volkswagen as part of an agreement that dated back to the prior's founding. The result was the company's first mass-market mid-engined car, predating the Boxster by about 25 years before Porsche revisited the idea. It proved a decent seller, with over 100,000 made from 1969 to 1976. And while there isn't much fanfare surrounding it, we wouldn't call it an unloved model. That said, it didn't help that it barely wheezed out 100 horsepower from its flat-four and flat-six engines. Bring a Trailer A Fun PlatformBut its underrated status helps keep values relatively sane. Neatly restored and well-loved survivors fetch for about $30,000, but one can find tidy examples for under $10,000. With prices starting that low, it could be said that anyone looking for a reasonably-priced project car won't feel too bad about hacking one up for, say, an engine swap. The idea of swapping a punchier engine in the 914 has been around since, well, the 914 began. We've seen flat-sixes from the 911 being bolted on, as well as LS V8s, and Subaru EJ swaps. There's no shortage of aftermarket support, either, and you won't be hounded by purists for modifying it. See? Getting a classic Porsche that isn't a 911 has its perks. Bring a Trailer Check This One OutOne can go mild or wild in restomodding a 914. Take this particular example from Bring a Trailer. Its targa roof has been deleted and turned into a proper roadster. It also benefits from disc brakes on all four corners, along with a healthy dose of suspension upgrades. On top of that is a modern but period-looking audio unit, and the fenders have been fattened up because, well, why not? But the meat of this restomod is a 2.2-liter flat-six from a 911 from about the same era. Okay, it's not mentioned if it came from a 911T, 911E, or 911S, but it surely made more power than the 2.0-liter mill from the original 914/6. For reference, the most powerful trim (914/6 SC) made 109 hp on a good day. The 2.2-liter flat-six from a 911T put out 125hp, a decent 16 hp more than the 2.0-liter. Mind you, the engine wasn't left untouched. It was fully rebuilt with dual Weber carburetors and a Perma-Tune electronic ignition system. A custom exhaust is also part of the package, although the five-speed manual transmission appears stock. Bring a Trailer Worth More Modded?Unless it's a one-owner, low-mile example, 914 prices have been largely attainable. That said, we saw cars in the $40,000 to $60,000 mark that have had their engines swapped and extensively modified. Does this mean 914s are worth more modded than stock? It appears to be the case, especially if it's neatly done. This 2.2-swapped example is a relative bargain by all means, then. At the time of writing, it stands at just $10,914 with three days of bidding remaining.. So, if there's anyone in the market for a quirky and offbeat project, this might be right up your alley. 6. Independent No MoreAfter 60 years of free reign, Alpina enters a new chapter under BMW’s wing. Established in 1965 by Burkard Bovensiepen, the company became an independent automaker in 1983 but has always had close ties with Munich. It will be interesting to see where the brand goes from here, and we're keeping our fingers crossed that Bavaria keeps the essence of Alpina. But what exactly defines an Alpina? Well, there have been several examples per decade that answer that. That said, narrowing its most definitive and significant models down is a monumental task, but it's safe to say that it's cars that balance luxury and performance right in the middle instead of going all out like the M Division. Alpina Genesis: From A1/3 to B7 TurboAlpina started by making the 1800 models quicker by upfitting them with modified Weber carburators in a dual setup, and later on, making go-fast parts for the 02 series and 3.0 CS. But Alpina’s turning point would happen in 1975 with the A1/3. It was a standalone model of sorts rather than a lightly tuned E21 3 Series, boasting performance enhancements that laid the groundwork for the company. Several E21-based models followed, along with E12-based cars. One noteworthy model was the B7 Turbo from the late ’70s. With 300hp from its 3.0-liter straight-six, it was one of the fastest sedans of its era with a 0-60 mph time in about six seconds. Alpina then applied the same trick to the E24 6 Series to create the B7 Turbo Coupe, as well as the E23 7 Series. True IndependenceBy 1983, Alpina had become recognized by the German Federal Ministry of Transport as an automaker. Just in time, too, as the E30 3 Series had just come out the year prior. The first Alpina-fied E30 was the C1/2, based on the 323i, and would be succeeded by models like the C2 2.5, C2 2.7, and B3 2.8. There were also more extreme (but still cushy) models introduced, namely the B6 3.5 and 3.5 S, the latter being based on the M3 of the time. Of course, the 5 Series got its fair share of attention, in both E28 and E34 guises. The E28 B7 Turbo and E34 B10 Biturbo models were particular highlights, the latter actually being more powerful than BMW’s own M5. Of course, the company continued building hotted-up 6 Series and 7 Series models. Nicest of the ’90sA new decade meant a whole slew of redesigned BMWs. Alpina wasted no time applying its magic to those cars, either. Starting with the E36 3 Series, things started off mildly with the B6 2.8. Succeeding that was the B3 3.0 and B3 3.2, which both punched out more horses than the American M3, and it was topped off by the insane B8 4.6. The B8 4.6 shoehorned an M60 motor in the E36's slim engine bay, something that BMW themselves said was impossible. Oh, and it was also available as a Touring wagon. For the E39 5 Series, Alpina gave the 528i power levels that matched the 540i with the B10 3.2 and B10 3.3. Of course, the main attractions of the Alpina E39 range were the V8 models. It was kicked off by the B10 V8, then the B10 V8 S towards the end of E39 production. As for the E38 7 Series, there was the B11 for the V8-powered 735i and 740i, and B12 for, you guessed it, the V12 750i/750iL. The 6 Series was gone even before the ‘90s began, but that didn’t stop Alpina from having a little fun with the E31 8 Series. Alpina went straight for the 850i V12 for the B12 5.0 Coupe, then upped the ante with the 850CSi-based B12 5.7 Coupe. Yes, They Made Roadsters TooDon't think that we forgot about the roadsters that Alpina made. Granted, it wasn't the brand's bread and butter, but the few it produced are certainly worth a mention. Alpina's first open-top car was the Z1 RLE, short for Roadster Limited Edition, and it was, indeed, a limited-run model with just 66 made. It would take another decade before the brand made another one, this time based on the Z8 as the Roadster V8. It was then followed by the E85 Z4-based Roadster S that curiously used the same engine block as the American E36 M3 but tuned to make about 300 hp. Into the New Millennium and to the PresentIn the E46 3 Series front, there was the B3 3.3, B3 3.3 Allrad (all-wheel drive), and B3 S that offered near-M3 levels of performance in a more practical sedan or wagon form. Of course, succeeding 3 Series models followed the same pattern, gaining more performance with each generation. The same went for the 5 Series and 7 Series-based cars. Europe fell in love with diesels in the 2000s, and Alpina jumped into that wave, too. It started with the E39 D10 Biturbo, and then with the E90/91 D3 and D3 Biturbo, which was also offered as a coupe. From that point onwards, the company would build high-performance diesels until 2025. Of course, Alpina wasn't blind to the rise of crossovers, either. Its first performance SUV came in the form of the F25 XD3 Biturbo, which was then succeeded by the G01 XD3. Curiously, the company never made an X5-based derivative, but it filled in for the performance derivative of the X7 with the XB7. So, what's next for the brand? By the looks of it, it could become the bridge between BMW M and Rolls-Royce. It's already been rumored that a new 7 Series-based model is coming soon, and not every BMW model will get the Alpina treatment. It seems that the new Alpina will focus more on the larger BMW platforms in its new chapter. Bespoke models are also possible down the line. Cautiously optimistic would be a good pair of words to describe the acquisition, and hopefully, Alpina won’t just be a trim in the future. 7. Lexus has not yet reported detailed sales figures for the 2025 calendar year, but the luxury automaker looks set to shatter more records. Lexus expects sales to have exceeded 360,000 units by the time all the numbers are tallied up, and it’s mostly thanks to soaring demand for the brand’s SUVs. That figure would mark a roughly 5% increase over 2024, which was already the brand’s best year in its 35-year history. Unfortunately, there’s a downside, with buyers facing lengthy waiting times for certain models as demand outstrips supply. Lexus Inventories Far Below Industry Average Lexus According to CBT News, inventories for some Lexus models fell to less than three days’ supply across the country in late December. That’s in stark contrast to the overall new-vehicle inventory of 88 days reported by Cox Automotive in November, prior to the holiday season. Even back then, though, Lexus was also struggling with inventory levels that were trailing rivals like Infiniti, Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz. These tight inventories mean that many buyers will be forced to wait several months for a new model. Many are paying the sticker price to secure vehicles, while others are shopping beyond their immediate areas in an effort to find the vehicle they’re after. Over 80% of Lexus sales are now SUVs or crossovers, and models like the RX, GX, and three-row TX are hugely popular. Across the first three quarters of 2025, Lexus had already sold over 80,000 RXs and nearly 40,000 TXs. The GX, which entered a new generation for the 2024 model year, had sold over 28,000 units across the first three quarters of 2025. An SUV For Every Need Lexus currently has seven SUVs on sale, starting with the subcompact UX and going all the way up to the imposing LX. The midsize RX remains the brand’s bread and butter, followed by the cheaper and smaller NX. Hybrids have also bolstered the appeal of multiple Lexus SUVs. The UX is only available with a hybrid powertrain, while the 2026 NX moved to a heavily hybrid-centric lineup a few months ago. The LX, for years powered by a thirsty V8, is now available with a twin-turbo V6 hybrid with 457 horsepower, so neither performance nor efficiency need to be sacrificed. Related: Lexus Tops 2025 Satisfaction Rankings as BMW and Tesla Slide Final ThoughtsLexus is ticking all the right boxes for Americans right now. Aging models like the previous GX and LX have been completely revamped in recent years, while the SUV range has further embraced hybrids, an in-demand powertrain choice currently. Lexus also has the RZ, its sole electric SUV that has become a lot cheaper since it was first launched. Toyota must now push hard to increase production capacity of models like the GX and TX. Until that happens, many buyers will need to be patient if ordering a new Lexus SUV. View the full article
  8. A Small Start That Made a Big ImpactWhen Honda launched the first Civic in the early 1970s, it was a practical solution to global fuel and emissions challenges. Compact, light, and fuel-efficient, it quickly earned a reputation for reliability and smart engineering. The Civic stood out for its simplicity and well-thought-out design, appealing to everyday drivers who valued efficiency over flash. That balance between practicality and performance became central to Honda’s brand identity, influencing models for decades, from daily commuters to performance variants like the Civic Type R. That same focus on function and refinement defines this 1974 Honda Civic restomod, recently featured by Larry Chen on YouTube after debuting at the Japanese Classic Car Show in Southern California. The project reimagines what the Civic might look like today if Honda had continuously updated the original model with modern technology and materials. Rather than chasing extreme power or style, the build emphasizes subtle evolution, bringing 1970s simplicity into a 21st-century context while keeping the character that made the Civic iconic. Modern Engineering, Classic FeelThe build is powered by a K20A Type R engine paired with a six-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential. Producing about 230 horsepower, nearly five times the output of the original engine, it transforms the Civic’s performance without compromising its balance. To fit the new powertrain, the builder widened and reinforced the engine bay, integrating a custom cradle that supports the steering rack, suspension mounts, and load-bearing points. The modifications make the car stronger, more responsive, and capable of handling modern power levels while maintaining the engineering precision Honda is known for. Underneath, nearly every component has been upgraded. Custom control arms, Prelude hubs, and RSX axles improve durability and geometry, while BC Racing coilovers and Wilwood four-piston brakes enhance handling and stopping power. The underbody has been reinforced and detailed for longevity. The updates make the car drive and feel like a new vehicle rather than a modified classic. The engineering focus was less about building a show car and more about creating something that feels like a genuine continuation of Honda’s original design approach. YouTube: @LarryChenPhoto View the 3 images of this gallery on the original article Design in the DetailsOn the outside, the restomod keeps the Civic’s familiar shape but refines it with modern touches. Hand-formed steel bumpers finished in tungsten Cerakote sit closer to the body, while a 3D-printed grille and flush taillights clean up the design. Subtle spoilers add aerodynamic stability without changing the car’s classic proportions. Finished in Grand Prix White, a nod to Honda’s racing history, the vehicle looks understated and modernized without losing its identity. Inside, the updates follow the same restrained approach. Euro R Recaro seats are reupholstered in houndstooth-pattern leather with tan accents, giving the interior a vintage feel with modern comfort. The dashboard retains its original shape but integrates a Haltech IC-7 digital display styled like factory gauges. Custom 3D-printed switches hide new electronics while keeping the layout period-correct. Finishing details like a mahogany shift knob, Porsche-sourced shift boot, and Momo steering wheel add quality without excess. 9. Dodge Vipers are among the most visceral performance cars ever sold, especially the early examples that predate traction control, stability systems, and any real safety net. They were loud, crude, and built for fun. Yet, owners still love modifying them. Usually, that means more power, forced induction, or aero tweaks. However, this 2001 Viper RT/10 listed on Cars and Bids turns itself into a proper American muscle car. Its original V10 and manual transmission have been removed entirely, replaced by a supercharged Hellcat Redeye V8 and a three-speed automatic built with one goal in mind: going very fast in a straight line. We've seen some wild Hellcat swaps, but Throtl got real creative with this one – and it's selling for less than a Nissan Versa Built For the Strip, Not the Street Cars and Bids Cars and Bids Cars and Bids Power comes from a 6.2-liter Hellcat crate engine, originally rated at 797 hp and 707 lb-ft of torque in factory form. This setup goes further, adding upgraded fueling, a smaller supercharger pulley, and extensive cooling upgrades. While no dyno sheet is provided, the seller claims the car runs the 1/8 mile in the high five to low six-second range. That performance explains the TH400 three-speed automatic, a transmission chosen for durability and consistency rather than driver involvement. The rest of the car follows the same logic. Penske Racing coilovers, drag-focused brakes, and lightweight wheels all support the car’s single-minded purpose. Exterior deletions like fog lights and windshield wipers reinforce that this Viper is not meant to be a street car. Much like obscure modified Challengers that end up as convertibles or a Hemi-swapped Jeep Renegade, this build exists because someone wanted to see if it could be done, not because it made practical sense. When a Viper Has an Identity Crisis Cars and Bids Cars and Bids Cars and Bids In many ways, this car barely qualifies as a Viper anymore. It has 8 cylinders instead of 10, forced induction instead of natural aspiration, and an automatic transmission where a heavy clutch pedal once lived. Although its raw and unhinged character still lives on, it's a different type of crazy – one that's more serious and calculated. That cabin follows suit with a Sparco steering wheel and custom center console, but the execution is rough around the edges. It prioritizes function over finish, and it shows. No Reserve Performance Bargain Cars and Bids Cars and Bids Cars and Bids With no reserve and bidding still under $20,000 with a day left on the auction, this Hellcat-swapped Viper is a fascinating proposition. It is not historically correct, not particularly refined, and not street-legal. If you're looking for something sensible, look away. This V8-swapped Viper is a one-of-a-kind drag machine, and that's all it is, and it costs less than the cheapest new car on sale. Whether you see it as sacrilege or brilliance is beside the point. Builds like this are why enthusiast car culture stays interesting. View the full article
  10. Two of the most decorated drivers in the history of the Drag Illustrated Winter Series presented by J&A Service are joining forces for the final two events in 2026. Spencer Hyde, the 2023 World Series of Pro Mod winner, will be taking over driving duties for reigning U.S. Street Nationals winner and Winter Series points champion Ken Quartuccio. Hyde will be piloting the same screw-blown ‘69 Camaro out of the Scott Tidwell Racing camp, tuned by Steve Petty, that Quartuccio won the championship with last year. The announcement was first revealed live on The Shake and Bake Show with “Stevie Fast” Jackson, Lyle Barnett, and Courtney Enders. After a semifinal finish at the Snowbird Outlaw Nationals presented by Motion Raceworks, Quartuccio made the difficult decision to step back from driving duties at the upcoming U.S. Street Nationals presented by M&M Transmission (January 23-25) and World Series of Pro Mod (February 26-28). Quartuccio runs East Side Auto Transport, a major car-hauling operation, and stated his immediate focus needs to be on multiple new business opportunities. “This isn’t a decision I take lightly,” said Quartuccio. “After winning the U.S. Street Nationals and the Winter Series championship in 2025, it is very important for my business that I step back to focus on expanding new opportunities there. “Spencer Hyde is the only driver I trust to take this car forward,” Quartuccio added. “He has the talent, work ethic, and respect for what this car is and what the team represents. Putting him in my seat for the rest of the Drag Illustrated Winter Series is passing the torch to someone who can honor the legacy Scott Tidwell and Dustin Nesloney have built in this series and keep winning.” The car should feel comfortable for Hyde, who took his own screw-blown “Jack & The Green Stock” ‘69 Camaro from the No. 32 qualifying position to the WSOPM winner’s circle at Bradenton Motorsports Park in 2023. However, after focusing on a new venture driving the Jim Head Racing nitro funny car in 2025 – earning the NHRA Rookie of the Year award in the process – Hyde originally wasn’t planning to run this year’s Winter Series. It didn’t take long for him to get that familiar itch, though. “After watching the Snowbird Nationals from my couch, after Q1 I’m like, ‘Dang, I need to be there,’” Hyde admitted. “I’m not gonna lie – I called Lyle and said, ‘Man, I gotta find myself a hot rod.’ He said Tommy [Youmans] had another one, and I did briefly talk to Tommy. In the middle of all that happening, Scott Tidwell called – Ken Quartuccio did as well – and told me what was going on and that they wanted me to drive that car. It was a pretty cool phone call to get.” Within a week of the announcement, Hyde has already gotten some seat time in the car, testing with the Tidwell team in Bradenton. And with a driver, car, and team that have all won on the biggest stage, the sky is the limit on what they can accomplish at the next two events. “Obviously Steve Petty, he’s arguably the best to ever do it,” Hyde said of the championship tuner. “The Tidwell camp is known to win some races, and I’d like to think that I’ve got a little bit of clout with winning back in 2023. I think it’s a pretty good combination of people and we’ll see what can happen.” This story was originally published on January 5, 2026. A Promising Start Meets a Tougher MarketWhen the Rivian R1T arrived on the scene in 2021, the California-based EV maker appeared poised to continually raise the bar for the future of electric vehicles. However, like many EV brands, Rivian was hit hard by a sudden market shift – an impact that has since been reflected in its 2025 delivery figures. Rivian, which currently sells EVs only in North America, said on Friday that it delivered 42,247 vehicles last year, representing an 18% decline from its record 51,579 deliveries in 2024. The company also reported 9,745 deliveries in the fourth quarter, roughly 3,500 fewer than in Q3. While the decline may appear concerning at first glance, it was largely expected following the loss of federal EV tax credits last September. Rivian Rivian’s Next MoveWith EV models becoming increasingly expensive, Rivian appears to need its upcoming R2 to regain momentum and broaden its appeal. The R2 is a mid-size electric crossover positioned to rival the Tesla Model Y, with its deliveries expected in the first half of this year. The model represents one of several attempts by automakers to address growing demand for relatively affordable EVs, alongside forthcoming offerings such as the Slate Truck. Pricing will be a critical factor in the R2’s success. The model is expected to start at around $45,000, placing it squarely in the same price range as a Tesla Model Y Premium RWD. At present, Rivian sells just two passenger EVs: the R1T and the R1S. The all-electric R1T pickup starts at $72,990, while its range-topping Quad variant – priced from $115,990 – offers an EPA-rated range of 374 miles and a quad-motor powertrain producing 1,025 horsepower. The R1S SUV, which competes with EVs such as the Tesla Model X and Hyundai Ioniq 9, carries a small price increase over the pickup, with base pricing starting at $76,990. Kristen Brown The Rules Have ChangedLooking ahead, Rivian – along with other EV-focused brands – will be competing in a market without the incentives that once made widespread EV adoption seem inevitable. Several automakers have already begun rolling back their all-electric strategies. At the same time, combustion-powered models appear to be regaining traction, highlighted by the return of vehicles such as the Ram 1500 TRX, which now delivers 777 horsepower from its supercharged 6.2-liter Hemi V8. While the impact of the shifting market on EV-focused brands remains unclear, Rivian said it will release its Q4 earnings report next month. 12. Not Your Typical FirebirdA post from Facebook user If ya squint it’s mint shows an unusual-looking Pontiac Firebird Trans Am, made especially striking by its high-riding stance and wagon-like body style. In the comments, one user who appeared to know the owner shared key details that help explain the build – most notably that the car is used for the Gambler 500. While the name may sound similar to the famed Daytona 500, the Gambler 500 couldn’t be more different. There’s no oval track, no pace cars, and, most importantly, no six-figure race machinery. Instead, the event – which we once joined – features cheap, impractical vehicles driven across public lands, with participants encouraged to show up in a $500 car. With that context in mind, it’s easy to understand why this Firebird looks rough around the edges. If ya squint it’s mint on Facebook Built to Take AbuseGiven the demands of off-roading, the lifted suspension plays a crucial role in improving ground clearance and trail capability. One Facebook user claimed that the build sits on a Chevrolet Suburban frame, a setup far better suited for rough terrain and harsh driving conditions. The presumed Lincoln Town Car body also offers significantly more interior space than the stock Firebird’s pony-car layout, allowing the owner to carry tools, spare parts, and other essential gear during long excursions. The post also shows what appears to be the rear end of Dodge's now-discontinued station wagon model, the Magnum, integrated into the build. However, one commenter noted that the images circulating online are already outdated and even shared a more recent photo of the car in its current form. That updated version reportedly features rear fins—a styling cue reminiscent of classic American cars like the Chevy Bel Air. If ya squint it’s mint on Facebook Function Over FormNo specific powertrain details were disclosed in the post. But given that the Gambler 500 discourages expensive or overbuilt vehicles, it’s reasonable to assume the engine remains relatively stock. The second-generation Firebird Trans Am – the visual foundation of this build – was originally offered with several engine options, including a rare and notably durable SD-455 V8 equipped with upgraded internal components. This Frankenstein-like creation may seem random, but in the world of the Gambler 500, the build starts to feel more intentional. More than that, the event encourages participants to pick up trash along the way, so while this car may be odd-looking on the surface, it still serves a purpose by giving back to the community. 13. Kia America posted its best annual sales in history in 2025, with 852,155 vehicles sold across the country, a healthy increase of 7%. Together with Hyundai, the Korean brands saw strong growth last year, largely a result of class-leading design and vehicles spanning multiple segments. But what’s particularly intriguing about Kia’s sales figures are the two models that saw the biggest growth for the company in America last year. Although the Kia Sportage remains the brand’s top-selling model and SUVs still dominate overall, it was the surprising combination of a midsize sedan and a minivan that accounted for Kia’s most significant gains in percentage terms. Kia K5 and Carnival Enjoy Sales Boom 2025 Kia K5 Kia View the 4 images of this gallery on the original article Last year, Kia sold 72,751 examples of the midsize K5 sedan. Although it still trails the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry, this represents a massive 57% sales jump relative to 2024; no other Kia model managed to increase sales by a larger margin. Considering that midsize sedans aren’t exactly in their golden age, this is a promising result for the K5. The 2026 model didn’t change much, but it seems that the vehicle’s low starting price of $27,390 and the availability of a 290-horsepower range-topper have started to catch the attention of buyers in this category. The Carnival minivan is the Kia that saw the brand’s second-highest sales growth after the K5 in 2025. 71,917 Carnivals were sold last year, an increase of 44.6% over 2024. The addition of a much more efficient hybrid variant of the Carnival no doubt contributed to the minivan’s rise in sales, and it’s keeping pace with a surprising revival of minivans in general. Whereas the standard Carnival V6 gets just 21 mpg combined, the hybrid returns up to 32 mpg. To put into perspective the sales growth of the K5 and Carnival last year, consider that sales of Kia’s Sportage was up by just 12.9%, while the Telluride—which is soon to be replaced—was up by 6.7%. There were declines for both Kia EVs (the EV6 and EV9), along with the Soul, Seltos, and Sorento. Related: 5 Reasons You Should Buy A Minivan Over An SUV Rising Car Prices Could Benefit Less Popular Body Styles Kia The average price of new cars surpassed $50,000 for the first time in recent months, a new record that’s created an affordability crisis for lower-income households. For many consumers, this could mean abandoning hopes of jumping into a desirable SUV for something cheaper. Often, sedans and minivans deliver greater value for money than SUVs and crossovers, despite the body styles falling out of favor over the last 15 years or so. With the demise of the Kia Soul, Kia’s cheapest car is now the K4 sedan at $22,190. The stylish K4 Hatchback also debuted recently with an attractive sub-$25k price, and you can get a spicy turbocharged example for around $29k, with a lot more power than any Kia SUV at the same price point. At $36,990, the cheapest Carnival has a lot more space than any equivalent Kia SUV. While SUVs are likely to maintain their domination, buyers willing to sacrifice the raised, rugged body style can drive off in something cheaper, and that could further drive sedan and minivan sales in the months ahead. 14. Why a Cabin Air Filter Matters More Than You ThinkCabin air filters are easy to overlook, but they play a meaningful role in everyday driving. Their job is to trap dust, pollen, exhaust particles, and other debris before air enters the cabin through the HVAC system. A clogged or dirty filter can reduce airflow, strain the blower motor, and allow unpleasant odors or allergens to circulate inside the car. For drivers with allergies or those who spend a lot of time in traffic, a fresh cabin air filter genuinely improves comfort and air quality. That importance, however, doesn’t justify excessive pricing or unnecessary replacement intervals. Most automakers, including Honda, recommend replacing a cabin air filter roughly every 12,000 to 15,000 miles, or even less frequently depending on conditions. Some Honda maintenance documentation suggests a time-based interval of around 24 months. Even in dusty environments, replacing the filter at every oil change is difficult to justify, especially when the component itself is inexpensive and designed to be serviced quickly. Stock Photo Reddit Sparks Debate Over a $130 Filter SwapThe controversy surfaced via a detailed post on Reddit, where the owner of a 2023 Honda HR-V shared service invoices showing a $130 cabin air filter charge added to nearly every oil change. According to the post, the pattern began shortly after the vehicle crossed 30,000 miles. By the time the odometer reached 51,809 miles, the dealer had allegedly replaced the cabin air filter four separate times, roughly once every 10,000 miles, each time tacking on the same triple-digit fee. What really fueled the backlash wasn’t the act of replacing the filter, but the pricing. Genuine Honda cabin air filters commonly sell online for $11 to $25, with aftermarket options dipping below $10. Even Honda’s premium four-layer carbon filter can be found for around $45. The labor argument also falls flat: on the HR-V, accessing the cabin air filter requires little more than lowering the glove box. It’s a task that takes minutes, not hours, and requires no specialized tools or training. Transparency Matters More Than EverThis incident highlights a broader issue with dealership service departments and consumer awareness. Dealers undeniably rely on service revenue to stay profitable, but stories like this erode trust and push owners away from franchised service centers altogether. When a simple, low-cost maintenance item is repeatedly billed at $130 without clear justification, it raises questions about transparency, consent, and value. For owners, take note: always ask questions, review invoices carefully, and don’t be afraid to decline optional services. Cabin air filters are among the easiest DIY maintenance tasks on modern vehicles, and even paying an independent shop will usually cost a fraction of what some dealers charge. View the full article

  17. Sayonara, Ford EscapeLast week, on December 17, the production line at Ford's Louisville Assembly Plant bid farewell, as the last Ford Escape made its way across the production line. Alongside its luxury twin, the Lincoln Corsair, the Blue Oval announced that the two models will end production back in August, as it prepares to retool the plant for a new electric vehicle built on its next-generation platform. On the factory floor, production line workers, including Gregorio Mosiea, expressed emotions as the last Escape made its way across the line. The car itself, a white-colored iteration, was shown in a Facebook post by Mosiea, covered in signatures from everyone who worked on the vehicle as a heartfelt tribute from those with countless memories from the production line. "I love change, so this is exciting for me," he wrote. "As I walked out of the building, there were guys in hard hats coming in one after another to immediately start gutting the building and retooling for a brand new Ford vehicle. It was a long, hard road, but now I can relax, regroup, and look forward to the future." Ford Dealers expressed emotions about the Escape for a different reasonHowever, despite the heartfelt tribute to a car that became a sales winner for Ford throughout its 25-year generational run, Ford dealers across the country expressed a wide range of emotions in a new report by Automotive News. Instead of sappy tributes and heartstrings, Blue Oval retailers across the land are sounding the alarm, as they express fears that the departure of the Ford Escape will leave consumers with one less affordable choice for them to sell. Doug North, the president of North Bros. in Detroit, told AutoNews that without the Escape, Ford has lost a vital stepping stone that would've led its customers into larger, more expensive Ford vehicles. "[The Escape is] bread and butter," North told AutoNews. “It’s a big seller for us, and it’s certainly part of the affordable segment, which we need. It gets new buyers in, and it gives us the ability, after a while, to move them into an Explorer and keep them in the brand. They have a logical explanation as to why, but they should have certainly reconsidered and continued producing it. It makes it hard to get people into our brand. I wish they had rethought that.” Cole Attisha View the 3 images of this gallery on the original article Dealers fear Escape buyers may defect to Japanese, Korean competitorsSales numbers support the concerns that dealers like North are experiencing amid the Escape's departure. According to published sales data from Ford, the company sold 146,859 Escapes, making it the second-highest-selling SUV in Ford's lineup, behind the much larger Explorer. However, the Escape competes in an exceptionally crowded segment. Its competitors include the likes of Honda, which sold 402,791 CR-Vs, and Hyundai, which sold 119,010 Tucson models. Nathan Meckley, general manager of Downtown Ford in Sacramento, California, told AutoNews that without a model in this critical segment, buyers will consider other brands, such as Honda, Hyundai, and even Toyota, which sold a whopping 475,193 RAV4s. “My fear is that these people who are already in Escape or Edge don’t have a vehicle to come back to,” He said. “You could put them in a Maverick, but maybe they don’t want a truck. You could put them in Mach-E, but maybe they don’t want electric. Where do they go? If you lose that entry-level buyer, you lose a generation of buyers. They’re going to go somewhere else and then get stuck in that brand.” Despite this, the Escape has proven to be a popular vehicle among the Blue Oval's lineup. Nick Anderson, the general manager at Chuck Anderson Ford in Excelsior Springs, Missouri, near Kansas City, noted that the Escape has traditionally been a popular option in his market, making up almost a fifth of his store’s annual sales volume, behind the F-150. He wonders why Ford got rid of the model at a time when affordability is top priority for new car shoppers and among the Ford dealer council. In his opinion, this decision "takes it in the wrong direction,” also stressing that “getting rid of the Escape is a huge mistake.” Ford Ford says buyers will consider comparable models, but skeptical dealers say they won't biteIn a statement to the trade publication, Ford's director of U.S. sales and dealer relations, Rob Kaffl, said that it expects Escape buyers to turn to alternatives that share the Escape’s platform, namely the Bronco Sport off-road-oriented crossover SUV and the Maverick compact pickup truck. “Both of these incredible vehicles are designed to be highly accessible, with many configurations available for under $30,000 when factoring in current customer rebates in the market,” he said. “We’re incredibly proud to offer outstanding alternatives that deliver exceptional value.” Despite sales data showing that Bronco Sports sell at a comparable level to the Escape and Ford moving more Mavericks than Escapes, Anderson's dealer instincts tell him that these alternatives brought up by Ford aren't entirely apples-to-apples comparisons. “I’ve yet to come across a customer that’s cross-shopping an Escape and a Maverick,” Anderson told AutoNews. “The Bronco Sport is a decent fill-in, but they’re two different types of buyers.” Final thoughtsFord's newfound push to lean on the brand's "icons" has unfortunately led to the demise of the Escape as a casualty. Still, personally, I do not think it is entirely a "game over scenario" as much as these dealers claim. AutoNews also reported that Ford told its dealers that it plans more attractive lease deals and other incentives for the Bronco Sport in 2026, including no-money-down and zero-percent APR for 60-month offers across the lineup as part of year-end promotions. In addition, the raw numbers cited by AutoNews from Ford indicate that sales of the Bronco Sport nearly overtook those of the Escape in U.S. sales through November this year, with just 10,091 units separating the two: 132,471 Escapes to 122,480 Bronco Sports. While it is true that the Escape and Bronco Sport are two crossovers with distinct vibes, the competition's recent moves indicate a trend leaning more toward the Bronco. It wouldn't seem logical that Honda would introduce a CR-V TrailSport and Hyundai would release the Tucson XRT for no apparent reason, except that vehicles like the Ford are bucking trends in a new niche segment they overlooked. 18. Drag racing is often an inherited life, with recent years seeing the habit in some families stretch four generations deep. For young Jack Line, it isn’t just a passion for quarter-mile competition that runs rich in his blood, it’s a deep drive to dig into what makes it all come together. Unafraid of hard work and, in fact, completely oblivious as to how a sedentary lifestyle is even possible, Line has etched his own name in motorsports. Editor’s Note: This story originally appeared in DI #197, the 30 Under 30 Issue, in November/December 2025. An integral part of three-time Pro Stock world champion Jason Line’s JLine Performance brand, 19-year-old Line has found his niche in CAD and CAM work as it relates to blocks, heads, and any of the accoutrements necessary to bring high horsepower roaring to life. While his father was racing for Pro Stock trophies and dedicated to digging in the dyno room, Line was paying attention, and although he has an undeniable desire to drive, he’s found great satisfaction in a craft that centers around ingenuity and precision. “Everything we need, I try to make,” says Line, who took an interest in the behind-the-scenes aspect of high-performance racing at an early age, following in the footsteps of grandfather Lawrence, a racer and mechanic, along with his aunt, uncles, and father. “Some of it was self-taught, just poking through and trying something until I figured it out, but I had help. Charlie Westcott, a Super Stock Hemi guy, and [machinists] Howard Elliott and Bob Olson, they helped me a lot. There have been a few people that, if I have a question or need anything, they’re there.” Outside of the engine shop, Line has become a reliable, hands-on crew member. The role was established early when he became part of Bo Butner’s KB Racing Pro Stock crew that went on to win the 2017 world championship. He also worked on Butner’s crew in Mountain Motor Pro Stock, which led to working with Mike Coughlin when he made the transition to the class with Elite Motorsports. Line’s work ethic and knowledge have made him an asset to any team, from 500-cubic-inch Pro Stock to sportsman categories. Most recently, he worked alongside his father on the Hemi Barracudas owned by Bucky Hess and raced in the Sox & Martin Hemi Challenge at Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park. Although Line is anything but outspoken and shies away from attention and grand statements, he isn’t timid when it comes to his intentions on any race course. His closest competitor has unintentionally set the bar high; dad Jason has 51 Pro Stock wins, an additional world title in Stock Eliminator, and set an A/Modified Production land speed record at Speed Week at the legendary Bonneville Salt Flats in 2012. The younger Line had his shot at the salt in 2023 and 2024 in the Jesel Land Speed Team’s entry, and although he eclipsed 200 mph, he did not meet his father’s 235 mph average. “I really wanted to go faster than him at Bonneville. I know it’s about impossible, and I’d have to race until I’m 100, but I want to try to be better than my father in every aspect,” says Line with a tone of respect. As the future builds, Line is enjoying his life and looking ahead toward what he hopes will include a chapter with him behind the wheel. In addition to racing at Bonneville, he has made his first steps into quarter-mile racing. After Dallas Glenn allowed him to take his El Camino down the local dragstrip, he drove his dad’s 1970 Buick GS at the PRO race in Bradenton. He also has his own race car, a Camaro, in the shop at home that he works on whenever possible. “Hopefully, my future includes Comp, Pro Stock, making cool parts,” he says. “I wish I could have been born a little earlier to be in the carburetor-era of Pro Stock – that would have been awesome. But I like how everything is going. I don’t know everything, but I’m proud of what I’ve learned in the manufacturing and machining side of things. I’m working and learning, and it’s been cool to actually be helpful and make parts for people. “Someday, I think it would be awesome to race with my dad in Pro Stock, and maybe I can convince him to get back in the seat,” Line adds. “You never know, but it’s great already because I get to hang around a lot of smart and fun people and have new experiences. I’m pretty happy.” The post DI 30 Under 30 2025: Jack Line first appeared on Drag Illustrated. View the full article

  21. Back From The DeadIn the automotive world, a blown motor typically means replacement is the more practical option, as repairs tend to be costly. Fortunately for the guys at LOJ Conversions, they already had a spare 7.3-liter Ford Godzilla V8, which was ultimately swapped into a 2005 F-250 after its original engine suffered a rod failure that destroyed the block. Why would LOJ Conversions—known for LS-swapped Nissan projects like the LS7-powered 350Z—have a massive V8 just lying around? According to owner Stephen Dorrick, the engine was originally purchased so the team could study it and gather data for future product development for his powertrain conversion business. He initially considered swapping the engine into a Ford Excursion SUV, but he couldn’t find a good deal. Instead, he ended up with an F-250 pickup showing 81,000 miles, which he found on Facebook and paid more than he had intended to. Old-School Simplicity Still MattersThe F-250 is a basic XLT model, though it does include power windows and power door locks. It also benefits from a coil-spring front suspension, replacing leaf springs, as part of the mid-cycle update for the 2005 model year. For Dorrick, however, the appeal lies in the truck’s simplicity, noting that basic trims tend to be more reliable because they have fewer components that can fail. That simplicity is complemented by the swapped Godzilla gasoline engine, which Ford introduced to the Super Duty lineup for the 2020 MY. The naturally aspirated V8 forgoes turbochargers and relies on a pushrod design, both of which help reduce mechanical complexity. In factory form, the engine produces 430 horsepower and 475 lb-ft of torque. One of the most notable aspects of the build is how straightforward the conversion turned out to be, with Dorrick describing it as if “Ford made it to be done that way.” While the original 5.4-liter Triton V8 was removed, the factory ZF S6-650 six-speed manual transmission, manual transfer case, Dana 60 front axle, and Sterling 10.5-inch rear axle were retained. To handle the added output, the clutch and flywheel were sourced from Ford’s 6.8-liter Triton V10. LOJ Conversions on YouTube Fitting Right InAdditional upgrades include a Ford Performance Godzilla engine control pack, a Godzilla-specific stainless steel exhaust system, and a 6.0-liter Power Stroke diesel V8's radiator. The primary drawback cited is fuel economy, with the truck returning around 12 mpg—roughly on par with a V12-powered Ferrari 812 Superfast. Nevertheless, Dorrick says the truck performs well as a daily workhorse and commuter, though the idea of eventually swapping the powertrain into an Excursion remains very much on the table. 23. Bespoke Is the Real Luxury FlexBespoke customization sits at the true peak of luxury cars, going beyond ticking boxes on an order sheet. Rolls-Royce and Bentley have made this option their calling card, letting buyers mix and match materials, colors, and finishes almost without limits. Genesis has been quietly heading this way, too. Two years back, the Korean marque launched the One of One division in Dubai, targeting buyers who expect more than just a spec sheet. That move showed Genesis could stand alongside the old-guard luxury brands, but with its own sense of style and a bit more restraint. Now, Genesis is bringing that approach back to Korea. The One of One service launches this year with the flagship G90, and will soon include the GV90 when the all-electric SUV lands. Instead of a one-size-fits-all luxury SUV, the GV90 is shaping up to be a true canvas for personal expression. One of One Division Expanding to GV90According to Maeil Business Newspaper, Genesis designers in Korea will work directly with buyers to shape every detail, from paint to leather to interior themes. Instead of mass-production suppliers, real artisans handle the finishing touches. It’s a hands-on process, not just a list of options. Genesis is also looking at a One of One Special Edition, which would take things further by mixing the brand’s boldest design ideas with handcrafted details. It’s a smart move. As cars get more digital, the real luxury is in what you can see and feel. Of note, Korea is Genesis’ home turf and its biggest market, making up over half of global sales last year. By showing it can deliver Rolls-Royce-level experiences, Genesis lifts the whole brand – even for buyers who never go fully bespoke. What the GV90 Brings to the TableThe GV90 will sit above the GV80 as Genesis’s most ambitious SUV so far. Early leaks and spy shots point to two versions: one with standard doors for the usual luxury crowd, and another with rear-hinged coach doors and a wide, pillarless opening – clearly aimed at those who prefer to be driven. That second setup takes a lot from the Neolun concept, with a lounge-like second row and a focus on rear-seat comfort. Think deep leather, plenty of adjustment controls, and a cabin built for quiet. Under the skin, the GV90 will use the new eM electric platform, with big batteries, dual motors, air suspension, and a ride that’s meant to be whisper-quiet. Meanwhile, A GV90 test car in Magma Orange has sparked talk of a performance version linked to Genesis’s Magma sub-brand. It’s unconfirmed at this point, but it’s showing us that Genesis is willing to expand the GV90’s potential – whether in terms of performance or utmost luxury. 25. Safety is LuxuryMeasurements of luxury in the automotive world vary; most agree that vehicle luxury is defined by the car's trim level, interior comforts, or the number of gizmos. However, an often overlooked factor is safety – the more money shelled out for a vehicle, the safer it should be than most. There are even certain luxury brands that prioritize safety as one of their unique selling points (USP). Mercedes-Benz was one of the pioneers of certain safety features that are now commonplace, such as the crumple zone, ABS, and airbags. Then again, this doesn't mean the German marque will never fall short on safety. In this case, it's the 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class, which got a not-so-stellar safety rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Misses the MarkWith a pedigree like that, our expectations of any Mercedes-Benz when it comes to safety are high. It seems that might not be the case for one of their vehicles: the 2026 E-Class, while generally good, had some test parameters that didn't score so well. Starting with the good news, the E-Class scored the top "G" or "Good" rating in the Small Overlap Front test, which assesses the driver-side and passenger-side components. If the results of the two evaluations differ, the combined small-overlap rating equals the lower rating. Things start to look worse during the Moderate Overlap Front test, where the E-Class scored a shockingly low "M" (Marginal) rating for the rear passenger restraints and dummy kinematics. It also only got an "Acceptable" score for head and neck injuries for the rear passengers, while during the side impact test, it only got an "Acceptable" score for the driver's side torso. This all added up to a "Marginal" overall score for the moderate overlap front test. Looking at the other test parameters, the E-Class received only "A" ratings for the vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian crash prevention systems. Safer Than MostWhile a marginal score isn't ideal, overall, the test shows the 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class is still safer than most. However, if you consider more affordable options (and some equal competitors), there are some that score way higher than this model, and that is where the brand needs to improve. For an automaker that has a tagline of "the best or nothing," the three-pointed star has some work to do on the safety side.
