This week on The Wes Buck Show, we’re handin’ over the keys and lettin’ it rip. JT Hudson and Mike Carpenter are holdin’ it down, and they’ve brought in some serious backup with Brian Lohnes jumping in to co-host. That’s right. The voice of NHRA is in the seat and anything could happen. We’re talkin’ racing, we’re talkin’ nonsense, and we’re probably gonna stir the pot just a little bit while Wes is away. Then we bring in Chase Lautenbach, the man behind Street Car Takeover, one of the hottest brands in street car racing right now. The season is coming in hot and Chase is here to break down what they’ve got cookin’ for 2026. Big events, big crowds, and a whole lot of fast street cars. Joining him is Michael Poland, who is stepping in to help push Street Car Takeover to another level this year. More structure, more growth, more chaos in the best way possible. These guys are building something real and we’re here to talk about it. Fast cars. Big plans. No supervision. YOU KNOW THIS ONE’S GONNA GET INTERESTING. LET’S GO. 3. Melanie Johnson has been selected as a 2026 grant recipient by the Shift Up Now Foundation. The announcement, made in celebration of Women’s History Month, marks a significant milestone as Johnson becomes the first drag racer in the organization’s history to receive a grant. The Shift Up Now Foundation is dedicated to driving gender equality in motorsports by providing critical funding and resources to talented female athletes. For the 2026 season, the Foundation awarded over $300,000 in grants to 15 drivers across 10 different racing series. “I’m incredibly honored to join the Shift Up Now Athletes this year and represent an organization that is making things happen for females in motorsport,” said Johnson. “To be the first drag racer included in this group is a privilege, and I’m eager to help expand the foundation’s reach into the NHRA community. Thank you to all of the wonderful people and organizations that support the Shift Up Now Foundation.” A second-generation racer and driver of the McPhillips Racing Top Alcohol Dragster, Johnson has quickly made a name for herself in the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series. Since her debut in 2025, she has secured her first regional victory at Norwalk and multiple semifinal finishes at prestigious events like the U.S. Nationals and the Texas Fall Nationals. Beyond her performance on the track, Johnson is deeply committed to fostering growth for women in the industry. She currently serves as a committee member for the Women in Motorsports North America (WIMNA) Southern California Chapter, working to create networking and professional development opportunities for women across all disciplines of racing. The support from Shift Up Now joins an existing roster of valued partners, including NGK Spark Plugs, Lucas Oil, ARP, and Alan Johnson Performance Engineering (AJPE). With the 2026 season underway, Johnson and the McPhillips Racing team remain focused on consistency and championship contention. 4. Coming off a win at the season kickoff in Gainesville, Funny Car’s Chad Green is ready to head to the desert for the 41st annual FMP NHRA Arizona Nationals presented by NGK Spark Plugs at Firebird Motorsports Park. Green wheels the 12,000-horsepower Bond Coat Ford Mustang and secured his third career win two weeks ago at the Amalie Motor Oil NHRA Gatornationals at Gainesville Raceway. The win was his second consecutive win at the season opener and Green believes his team will carry that momentum into Phoenix. He’s determined to make amends for last year’s early exit at the “Duel in the Desert” and keep himself in the mix in the loaded Funny Car category. “Anytime you win, it always helps with confidence, but what really gets me excited is to see how consistent our car ran all day in Gainesville,” said Green. “Nothing helps a driver’s confidence more than having a consistent race car. “Obviously, our main goal is to win the race. But short of that, we just need to go some rounds and avoid a first-round exit like last year in Phoenix, which can really kill your momentum after winning a race. It’s going to be a hot track this weekend and I think we will fare well under those conditions. My guys know how to navigate a hot track.” As part of NHRA’s yearlong 75th anniversary celebration, fans can expect multiple highlights at Firebird Motorsports Park, including: An appearance from NHRA legend and four-time world champion Don Prudhomme, as well as Charlie Allen and Jon Lundberg. On Friday, a free, limited-edition rally towel will be given to the first 3,000 fans in attendance to take in two rounds of pro qualifying. A new-look Nitro Mall, special displays and 75th anniversary stage in Nitro Alley. Last season, Shawn Langdon (Top Fuel), Paul Lee (Funny Car), and Greg Anderson (Pro Stock) each earned wins. This year’s race will be broadcast on FS1, with elimination coverage beginning at 6:30 p.m. ET on Sunday, March 22. It is the second of 20 events and run times were moved to earlier slots with the expected heat. Friday qualifying will begin at 9:30 a.m. local time on Friday with Pro Stock, followed by Funny Car and Top Fuel. The second session is slated to start at 12 p.m. On Saturday, Top Fuel will open the day at 10 a.m., followed by Funny Car and Pro Stock. The final qualifying session is scheduled to start at 12:30 p.m. with Top Fuel. Sunday eliminations will be bumped an hour earlier as well, with the first round of eliminations slated for 10 a.m. local time. Gates will open at 7 a.m. Friday through Sunday, with action in the Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series to begin at 7:30 a.m. on Friday and Saturday, and 8 a.m. on Sunday. With his win in Gainesville, Green has slotted himself into the first Mission #2Fast2Tasty Challenge of the season. The popular bonus race returns to the NHRA regular season as semifinalists from the previous race will rematch for a chance at a bonus purse and bonus points for the Countdown to the Championship playoffs. Green will take on Funny Car newcomer Jordan Vandergriff, who made his John Force Racing debut in Gainesville, with Alexis DeJoria and J.R. Todd on the other side of the ladder. “The Mission Challenge is a great opportunity to get even more points,” Green said. “I want to be in it every race. It makes qualifying that much more exciting. I’m sure Jordan will be looking for some revenge from Gainesville. For us, we will be looking to stay undefeated in 2026.” Other Funny Car stars to watch in Phoenix include back-to-back world champ Austin Prock, who didn’t qualify in Gainesville, four-time champ Matt Hagan and Ron Capps. Top Fuel’s Shawn Langdon is after more Phoenix success, taking on a field that includes Gainesville winner Josh Hart, reigning world champ Doug Kalitta, rookie Maddi Gordon, Tony Stewart, Antron Brown and Leah Pruett. Greg Anderson will look to repeat in Pro Stock, but Gainesville winner and area resident Matt Hartford hopes to keep rolling along against reigning world champ Dallas Glenn, Erica Enders and Aaron Stanfield. The FMP NHRA Arizona Nationals presented by NGK Spark Plugs will also feature thrilling competition in the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series and the NHRA Pro Mod Drag Racing Series. Race fans at Firebird Motorsports Park can enjoy the special pre-race ceremonies that introduce and celebrate each of the drivers racing for the prestigious Wally on Sunday and includes the fan-favorite SealMaster Track Walk. As always, fans get an exclusive pit pass to the most powerful and sensory-filled motorsports attraction on the planet. This opportunity gives fans a chance to see teams in action and service their hot rods between rounds, get autographs from their favorite NHRA drivers and more. Fans can visit NHRA’s popular Nitro Alley and Manufacturers Midway, where sponsors and vendors create an exciting atmosphere that includes interactive displays, merchandise, and food and fun for the entire family. Television coverage includes qualifying action on FS1 at 10 p.m. ET. on Friday and 12 p.m. on Sunday, leading into eliminations at 6:30 p.m. ET. 5. A near-flawless weekend to open the 2026 NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series season has Top Fuel’s Josh Hart riding high heading into this weekend’s FMP NHRA Arizona Nationals presented by NGK Spark Plugs at Firebird Motorsports Park. Hart made career-best runs, qualified No. 1, set the Gainesville Raceway track speed record with a 340-mph run and won in his debut with John Force Racing to kick off NHRA’s 75th anniversary season. It was a storybook start for Hart’s tenure at John Force Racing and it’s only made the talented Top Fuel driver think even bigger in his 12,000-horsepower Burnyzz Speed Shop/Speedmaster dragster. With a diamond Wally under his belt – as well as the points lead – Hart will have a chance to keep rolling in Phoenix and win the first Mission #2Fast2Tasty Challenge of the year, as well as get his first career victory at Firebird Motorsports Park. “The Burnyzz Speed Shop/Speedmaster team checked a lot of boxes at Gainesville and we’re going to take this momentum into Phoenix. We’re not going to take our foot off the gas; actually, quite the opposite,” Hart said. “We’ve set the expectation, we know where we need to improve and now it’s just to make sure that I can live up to everybody else’s expectations.” As part of NHRA’s yearlong 75th anniversary celebration, fans can expect multiple highlights this weekend at Firebird Motorsports Park, including: An appearance from NHRA legend and four-time world champion Don Prudhomme, as well as Charlie Allen and Jon Lundberg. Prudhomme’s iconic career and legacy in NHRA Drag Racing will be celebrated throughout the weekend as the race’s historic moment. Gates will open at 7 a.m. Friday through Sunday, with action in the Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series to begin at 7:30 a.m. on Friday and Saturday, and 8 a.m. on Sunday. The weather may present some challenging conditions, but Hart and his team, led by standout crew chief David Grubnic, will be ready. The team ran well in all conditions in Gainesville, which adds to Hart’s confidence level. He’ll face a loaded field in Phoenix, including reigning world champ and Gainesville runner-up Doug Kalitta, Langdon, Tony Stewart, Leah Pruett, Justin Ashley and four-time champ Antron Brown. Hart, though, is thinking big this year and that belief comes from the strong support around him. “I want to earn the trust and respect of the John Force Racing fans. I want to earn the respect of my peers – be a good driver, stage properly – and I obviously want to earn the trust and respect of our team,” Hart said. “We’ve made a couple of really good steps in that direction but I know that’s just the beginning.” “As for the weather forecast for Phoenix, I’m from Florida. I’m used to the heat so we’ll be just fine from the driver’s point of view.” Paul Lee returns to the site of his first career Funny Car victory a year ago, looking to take down Gainesville winner Chad Green, back-to-back champ Austin Prock, Matt Hagan, Jordan Vandergriff and Ron Capps. Greg Anderson will look to repeat in Pro Stock, but Gainesville winner and area resident Matt Hartford hopes to keep rolling along against reigning world champ Dallas Glenn, Erica Enders and Aaron Stanfield. 6. NHRA Funny Car driver and team owner Buddy Hull has announced he will not compete at this weekend’s FMP NHRA Arizona Nationals presented by NGK Spark Plugs, March 20-22, at Firebird Motorsports Park, as his team continues to recover and rebuild following their on-track incident two weeks ago in Gainesville. After an explosive mechanical failure during the event, Hull and his team immediately disassembled the Funny Car to assess the damage and determine next steps. While the team has since secured a replacement body, the time required to properly mount and prepare it for competition will prevent them from making the trip to Phoenix. “Obviously, this isn’t the news we wanted to share this week,” said Hull. “Any time you have to sit out a race, it’s tough, especially this early in the season. But at the end of the day, making sure everything is right with the car and that our team is safe is what matters most. We’re not going to rush that process. Matt Bynum and the guys are working hard to make sure we return better than ever.” The team has elaborated on the preparation heading into the Gatornationals. They had the Funny Car fully assembled in November of last season, displayed the Funny Car as part of their FS Performance sponsorship and began finalizing preparations well before the departure for Gainesville. Hull also provided an update on his condition following the incident. He suffered minor burns to his back and legs but credited his safety equipment for preventing more serious injuries. “My right hand is healing really well, and I’ve been staying in close contact with the NHRA medical team,” said Hull. “I had some minor burns from the fire, but honestly, my Impact firesuit did its job. It could have been a lot worse, so I’m grateful for that.” Looking ahead, Hull and his team are already evaluating options for the upcoming Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals, including the possibility of competing in Top Fuel. With current Top Fuel entry numbers sitting below a full field, Hull noted his desire to support the category while also fulfilling sponsor commitments. “We’re looking at every option for Pomona right now, including maybe running my Top Fuel dragster,” said Hull. “We’ve got great partners who count on us, and I also want to do my part to help make sure fans are getting full, competitive fields at these events. We’ll make the best decision for everyone involved.” Despite being sidelined this weekend, Hull will remain engaged with the action. “I’ll be watching every round on NHRA.tv and cheering on all my competitors,” said Hull. “It sounds like it’s going to be a hot one in Phoenix, so I just hope everyone has a safe weekend out there.” Hull also took time to thank the outpouring of support from across the racing community. “The calls, messages, and offers to help from fans, sponsors, and other teams have meant a lot to us,” said Hull. “This sport is a family, and you really see that in moments like this.” Off the track, Hull remained active with fans, appearing at a major customer event last weekend at Sam Pack’s Five Star Ford in Dallas. His signature FS Performance Ford Mustang was on display as he signed autographs and met with attendees. The team is planning additional activations with the dealership throughout the season. Hull and his team remain focused on returning to competition as soon as possible, with safety and long-term performance guiding every step of the rebuild process. They will keep the NHRA and their fanbase updated as more decisions are made leading up to the Winternationals. Tickets for the NHRA Arizona Nationals and Winternationals can be purchased at www.nhra.com. This story was originally published on March 18, 2026. 8. (Photos by David Whealon) – NHRA Drag Racing at the Gatornationals was off the hook yet again in 2026! The week started with new drivers, crew chiefs, and teams, plus record breaking performances in testing, and ended with big wins and happy fans. This is the start of a whole new year of NHRA Drag Racing and we know this season is going to be something special. We’ve got great action photos from Gainesville thanks to longtime contributor David Whealon. David was in Florida shooting all kinds of fun stuff at the Gatornationals and sent us a whole bunch of his favorites. I’ve raced and announced a fair amount in the state of Florida and can tell you that the fans there are awesome, and they came out in force this past weekend. We’re talking about a completely sold out crowd and packed house. That’s awesome news for drag racing fans. And boy did they get a great show at the 2026 Gators. Everyone that goes always comments on how fun the crowd is there and they aren’t kidding. We hope you enjoy the photos as much as they loved the live action. 13. If you are like me, there have been a bunch of times when you wished you had a thermal imagine camera. I use my laser temperature gun all the time, and it’s very handy, but sometimes it would be nice to see more than just that pinpoint spot’s temp while checking on engines, transmissions, and rearends. And let’s face it, in the past you needed to spend real money to get a thermal imaging gun that did anything useful. So now that you can buy everything on Amazon, including cheaper tools than have ever been available, what does a decent thermal imaging camera actually cost? Watch the video below and you’ll find out! This is another one of the great videos from our friends at Project Farm. Check it out. Video Description: Tested for boot up time, temperature accuracy on both cold and hot objects, as well as frame rate and overall image quality. Night vision capability. 18. I know there are some good reasons for Direct Injection in gasoline engines. But I also know that DI engines can be a giant pain in the butt and have some serious issues folks need to be aware of. With all that said, I also know that the folks at Brian Tooley Racing, along with hundreds of other engine builders and tuners, have tested DI combos and know that they can make more power than a Port Injection setup. But I also know engine builders and tuners who say otherwise. So who’s right? Will this video finally put this argument to rest? Or will it raise more questions than it does answers? Watch and find out. Video Description: There have been numerous tests performed by us and others comparing the power and performance capabilities of direct injection to port injection on the Gen V LT engine platform. While we have been confident in our findings for a few years now, there are still doubters of direct injection out there in the automotive world. We decided to revisit this test and invite a vocal opponent of Di, Scott Clark from RealTuners and the RealTuners Radio Podcast, to join in and see the results for himself. 19. I know several professional engine builders, and several who think they are professional engine builders. Make no mistake, I’m not even remotely claiming to be an engine builder, and that’s because I know real ones and it would be an insult to them to claim to be in their league. But in recent years, I’ve known several people who spent real money on race engines from big name companies and got a crappy product. To be fair, I’ve also known folks that spent real money with not so well known engine builders and have ended up with junk. It’s no wonder folks are always wondering who the right person is for the job when you are talking about spending your hard earned money. I know that there are plenty of people out there who would love to have a custom engine built, but just aren’t sure about where to take their business. And unfortunately, sometimes you’ve just got to bite the bullet and spend the money. In the video below, Mike Moran and the crew at Moran Motorsports are taking a customers engine and doing some diagnostics. Along the way they figure out why this engine is making less power than you would expect, and make changes to get the customer the power they need in an engine that will live. Video Description: A customer brought us an engine that had already been built by another shop, but something wasn’t right. The power numbers were way lower than expected, so we strapped it on the dyno to see what was really going on. After seeing the disappointing results, the customer asked us to tear it down, go through everything, and rebuild it the right way. Once we fixed the issues and put it back together, it went back on the dyno… and the difference was massive. The final result? 260 more horsepower than before. This video shows the before-and-after dyno pulls, what we found inside the engine, and how proper machining, assembly, and tuning made a huge difference in performance. If you’re into engine building, dyno testing, horsepower gains, and real performance results, this is one you don’t want to miss. #dyno #horsepower #enginebuild #enginedyno #racingengine #performanceengine #horsepowergain #dynotest #enginebuilder #racing The post This Race Engine Was Built By Someone Else. 20. I’ve always wanted a car with a metal flake roof, panel paint, and the whole nine yards. It’s custom 101 to have metal flake, and when you go to shows that cater to old school customs, traditional hot rods, and lowriders you will see a lot of metal flake. That’s because it’s not just for bass boats! In the video below you’ll see a cool old classic hot rod getting the roof primed, and then black base coat going on, and then the metal flake and clear. If you aren’t aware, metal flake like is being done here is mixed with the clear and is shot directly over the black base coat. After the desired number of coats of flake are applied, coats of plain clear are shot over it to bury the flake. This is one of the reasons why the old school customs have clear that looks to be a mile deep. And why many show car owners back in the day bragged about how many coats of clear they had on their cars. But this one only got one coat of clear so far, because there are other graphics and such in store for the roof before it is completely done! Here’s the video, check it out and let us know what you would metal flake! Video Description: Thumper’s finally getting his car sprayed! After a year and a half of saying “we’ll paint it soon,” we finally made it happen. In this one, we’re sanding, finding hidden bondo surprises, masking everything up, and laying down some serious metal flake. We went with Ed “Daddy” Roth Beatnik Purple (over black ‍) and loaded it up with flake to make it POP. A few runs, a little spilled flake, some coaching on the gun (“never stop, never stop!”), and boom — gleam, glisten, glitter. We only did one solid coat of clear for now because there are more designs coming Layer by layer, we’re building it right.
