Scott Sullivan on Pro Street Style, Street-Driven Customs, and a Lifetime of Hot Rod Building
Scott Sullivan is one of the most iconic car builders of the 1980s and 1990s. After building what many considered to be the first Pro Street car, his 1967 Nova, and several other iconic machines after, many people give him credit for starting the movement. Regardless of whether he was first or not, his name belongs on a list of 5-10 builders who really turned the world on its ear and started something new. Pro Street is, and will always be, something special because of all these great builders like Dobbertin, Robertson, Hay, Grimes, Saboury, and more. These folks were the backbone of a movement and in the Hot Rod podcast below you’ll get to hear a lot about what it was like then and Sullivan’s belief that all of these cars should be driven. Check it all out below. The post Scott Sullivan on Pro Street Style, Street-Driven Customs, and a Lifetime of Hot Rod Building appeared first on BangShift.com. View the full article

Lyle Barnett, Billy Banaka Racing & Outlaw Light Beer Team Up for NHRA Pro Mod Drag Racing Series
What was initially supposed to be a one-race opportunity has quickly turned into something much bigger for fan-favorite driver Lyle Barnett. Fresh off an ultra-impressive showing throughout the Drag Illustrated Winter Series presented by J&A Service, Barnett got the call to step in for NHRA Pro Mod Drag Racing Series championship contender Billy Banaka at the JBS Equipment NHRA Pro Mod Drag Racing Series presented by Elite Motorsports season opener, the 57th annual Amalie Motor Oil NHRA Gatornationals in Gainesville, Florida. Barnett made the most of it. Driving Banaka’s hot rod against one of the toughest Pro Mod fields in the country, Barnett qualified No. 6 with a strong 5.732-second pass at 249.86 mph, then marched all the way to the final round in a statement-making performance that turned heads throughout the pit area. Along the way, Barnett also recorded top speed of the meet at 252.24 mph, further cementing his presence as one of the weekend’s biggest stories. Barnett’s charge to the final ended in dramatic fashion, as he turned it oh-so-slightly red in the final round against Derek Menholt. Still, the runner-up finish, coupled with the performance and consistency shown throughout eliminations, made it clear this was no fluke and no ordinary fill-in appearance. As it turns out, Gainesville was only the beginning. In an effort to capitalize on Barnett’s popularity, momentum, and rising star power, Mark Stockseth and the rapidly growing Outlaw Light Beer brand have stepped in with a new sponsorship partnership that will keep Barnett in NHRA Pro Mod competition for the foreseeable future. The new deal will see Barnett remain with Billy Banaka Racing on a multi-race basis during the 2026 NHRA Pro Mod season, beginning with the fast-approaching NHRA Arizona Nationals in Phoenix. The move also speaks volumes about Banaka’s commitment to winning and to growing the program. What was originally planned as a one-race arrangement quickly evolved once the opportunity presented itself. Banaka, who finished No. 2 in the NHRA Pro Mod points standings in 2025, immediately made the decision to convert his outlaw Pro Mod Camaro to NHRA-legal trim and field two entries in the series, creating the opportunity for Barnett and Outlaw Light Beer to join forces under the Billy Banaka Racing banner. “It’s always been a dream of mine to fly the flag of a mainstream corporate sponsor, and I’m fired up to finally make it happen,” said Barnett. “I’m proud to announce that Mark Stockseth and Outlaw Light Beer have partnered with me and Billy Banaka Racing on a multi-race deal for the 2026 NHRA Pro Mod season. After a killer showing at the season opener in Gainesville, we’re rolling into Phoenix with Outlaw Light Beer riding along with me on the side of this iconic Pro Mod Camaro and ready to keep the momentum going. “Huge thank you to Outlaw Light Beer for the support and for believing in our program,” Barnett continued. “We’re looking to make some noise together.” For Stockseth, the decision was an easy one. “Lyle Barnett is exactly the kind of driver and personality you want representing your brand,” said Stockseth. “He’s a superstar talent behind the wheel, he connects with fans, and he brings an energy to the sport that’s impossible to miss. We believe it’s important for drag racing to keep young, marketable characters like Lyle in the mix, and when the opportunity came up to partner with him and Billy Banaka Racing, we jumped at it. We’re thrilled to be part of this program and excited about what this can do not only on the racetrack, but for the continued growth of the Outlaw Light Beer brand.” Banaka, one of the class’ most respected team owners and championship contenders, was equally enthusiastic about what came together following Gainesville. “What Lyle did for our team in Gainesville was huge,” said Banaka. “He stepped into a tough situation against a stacked field and drove the wheels off the thing. You could see the momentum building all weekend. Once the opportunity with Mark and Outlaw Light Beer came together, the decision was simple for me. We went to work getting another car converted to NHRA specs because I wanted to make sure we could keep Lyle in the seat and keep this deal moving forward. I’m proud of what our team has built, and I’m excited about what this next chapter can look like for all of us.” The partnership is a major moment for Barnett, Banaka Racing, and Outlaw Light Beer alike. Barnett gets the opportunity to continue building momentum in one of the toughest categories in all of motorsports. Banaka expands a front-running operation that was already knocking on the door of a championship. Outlaw Light Beer aligns itself with one of the sport’s most recognizable and entertaining young stars at a moment when his profile is rising fast. And if Gainesville was any indication, this group may be just getting started. Barnett and the Billy Banaka Racing/Outlaw Light Beer team are set to make their next appearance at the NHRA Arizona Nationals in Phoenix, where they’ll look to carry their season-opening momentum into the second stop of the 2026 NHRA Pro Mod campaign. Exhaust Insulation Tech: Installing Embossed Stainless Exhaust Heat Shielding On A Turbocharged Drag And Drive Beast!
I’ve been doing drag and drive events for 21 years now, and have been very vocal over the years about what it takes to be successful when it comes to completing these events and having a good time. There are many topics that we’ve discussed, about all different aspects of these events, but one that I am not sure folks listen to enough is heat management. Everyone knows they need a good cooling system, but there is more to it than just that. It’s one thing to be able to drive down the road at 65 for an hour. Four hours on the other hand is a completely different thing. Here’s why. When you drive your car down the road for an hour, the engine is at operating temp and things under the hood are warm, but the longer you drive the hotter all the other things in the car get. As all those things heat soak, it becomes harder and harder to get heat out of the engine compartment. At that point, things that don’t have active cooling start having to work harder. Think about ignition components, throttle bodies, intake manifolds, fittings, pumps, electronics, etc. The engine has fluid running through it and your radiator, working together to keep the engine at the temp you want. But all the things that are bolted to the engine, or that surround it in the engine bay, don’t have a cooling system. They have whatever hot air is traveling through the engine compartment, and nothing else. Those components rely heavily on their ability to work in those temps, or on insulative and reflective products to keep them from getting hot in the first place. That’s where exhaust heat shields become important, especially in a turbocharged application where downpipes can get glowing hot in the worst conditions. So how do you combat heat on your downpipes? Wraps, solid shields, and everything in between have been used for years. But how about those factory style embossed stainless shields? Can you install those yourself on your own ride? Our friend Bill Armstrong has an insanely rad twin turbocharged drag and drive Ford and he’s going to show us how to install this trick, embossed, stainless insulation as he installs it on his own ride. Video Description: Secrets revealed, installing and welding embossed stainless exhaust heat shielding. See how to cut and install the fiberglass installation, embossed stainless sheet and weld it up with a battery powered Amazon spot welder. British Touring Car Championship Legends Roundtable at Goodwood: Hear The Untold stories from the Super Touring glory years!
I know that we live in a time where it seems like we get to see every bit of racing that we want to, but the truth is that a ton of it is behind a pay wall now that means seeing all of it is expensive, if not hard. But in the 1990s and early 2000s there were cable tv channels that had shows and racing coverage about every kind of racing you could imagine. One of the hottest series in the world, and one that intrigued those of us in North America to no end, was the British Touring Car Championships. The cars, mundane 4 door sedans that were relatable to most Europeans, were turned into incredibly capable race cars that could often be seen with at least one wheel in the air going around corners. But that wasn’t what made it exciting. What made BTCC exciting was the door handle to door handle racing that very, very often including trading paint and off-track excursions. It was a riot to watch because you took 4-door sedans and raced them in a way that was arguably more aggressive than any other wheel to wheel racing in existence at the time. And I might argue that this was some of the most aggressive racing in motorsports history. It was awesome, fun, and I couldn’t stop watching. And either could anyone else. Video Description: If you were a motorsport fan in the ’90s, you’ll probably agree with us that the Super Touring era is THE era for the best racing action. A series that was so relatable to the average motorsport fan. The salesman rep car parked on their drive was the bedroom poster car on the weekend. People were making genuine car purchasing decision based on seeing that Vauxhall Vectra or Nissan Primera shunt its way to a paint-swapping victory. Those unfamiliar with Super Touring might just see a casual Ford Mondeo and wonder what all the fuss was about. What they didn’t know was that Mondeo was closer to an F1 car than it was to the car that cut them off on the M25. To properly reminisce about this era, we invited four Super Touring legends to Goodwood. Jason Plato, Steve Soper, Anthony Reid and Patrick Watts sat down for a trip down memory lane as they reveal all the untold stories of the era. If you’re a motorsport fan of any kind, sit back, relax and enjoy. If you want to see the Super Touring cars in action, there are limited Sunday tickets available at the 83rd Members’ Meeting presented by Audrain Motorsport available. Make sure you don’t miss out on the Shoot-Out finale of a lifetime. #TouringCars #SuperTouring #BTCC #Goodwood #83MM The post British Touring Car Championship Legends Roundtable at Goodwood: Hear The Untold stories from the Super Touring glory years! appeared first on BangShift.com. Suspension Tech: Check Out This Simple Trick to Removing a Rubber Suspension Bushing With Tools You Have, And Way Less Work!
I’ve use a lot of different methods for removing suspension bushings, but this one makes me question whether one of those methods was ever done correctly. I remember removing bushings by drilling a bunch of holes around the bushing, but I never used a drill bit quite like this before. Have you tried this method? Do you have a better one? Let us know in the comments section below! Video Description: In this video, I’m sharing a simple old-school trick for removing stubborn rubber suspension bushings without burning them out. This method has saved me a ton of time over the years — and more than a few headaches from melted rubber and smoke-filled shops. Using nothing more than a junk drill bit and a little patience, I’ll show you how to walk the rubber out of the bushing safely while keeping the housing usable for new bushings. I’ll also explain why you need to pay attention to sleeves when switching between rubber and polyurethane suspension parts. If you’re working on old suspension components and want a cleaner, easier way to get bushings out, this trick is worth knowing. Travis Shumake Returns to Arizona Nationals in Nostalgia Funny Car
One year after setting the top speed of eliminations at 330.88 mph in his Fry’s Food Stores Top Fuel Dragster, Phoenix native Travis Shumake will return to Firebird Motorsports Park in a completely different, but far more personal machine. For the first time in his professional career, the NHRA Top Fuel driver will compete behind the wheel of a Funny Car during the FMP NHRA Arizona Nationals presented by NGK Spark plugs, March 20-22, 2026. The second-generation professional drag racer will be driving Dave Benjamin’s Nostalgia Funny Car in a special hometown appearance backed by longtime partner Fry’s Food Stores. Shumake, who is licensed in several NHRA categories, will make the debut just weeks before the NHRA is set to honor his late father, Tripp Shumake, during the 1,000th Funny Car race at the upcoming NHRA Winternationals in Pomona, an event Shumake has not ruled out attending. The elder Shumake’s 1981 Southern Nationals victory behind the wheel of Johnny Loper’s Phoenix-based “Little Hoss” Funny Car marked the 100th Funny Car win in NHRA history. “I actually started out trying to follow my dad tire tracks into a Funny Car when I began my racing career,” explained Shumake. “The twists and turns of this off-season put me in a position where I can get back to my roots and celebrate my dad’s milestone in a very direct way. I am excited to get back into competition and back to literally the roots of the Funny Car class.” Shumake’s Fry’s Food Stores Top Fuel Dragster will also be on display at Firebird Motorsports Park as part of an interactive activation with Kroger Health’s Team Tune Up program, a partnership that will continue beyond the Phoenix race weekend. The opportunity to drive a Funny Car at his home track follows a breakout performance at the 2025 NHRA Arizona Nationals, where Shumake captured the top speed of the event with a 330.88-mph run during eliminations against reigning 2-time Top Fuel world champion Doug Kalitta. “Fry’s Food Stores is committed to uplifting our local communities and the athletes who inspire them,” said Christina Groth, Fry’s Food Stores Vice President of Merchandising. “Travis embodies determination and hometown pride, and we’re thrilled to support his first Funny Car appearance as he honors a remarkable family milestone in NHRA history.” The appearance is made possible through the continued support of Fry’s Food Stores, which has partnered with Shumake for multiple seasons. “Fry’s has always believed in the hometown story,” Shumake said. “They understand how special Phoenix is to me and why honoring my dad here matters so much. They have been an amazing supporter of my drag racing career and the sport in general.” The Legends Nitro Series kicks off qualifying Friday at 2:30 p.m. Fans can watch coverage on FS1 throughout the weekend. Tyler Hilton Adds Final Jewel to Top Fuel Crown With March Meet Victory
The March Meet is steep in Top Fuel tradition – Garlits, Sorokin, McEwen, and Warren have all hoisted that iconic triangular trophy head high in victory at the patch. Four-time NHRA Heritage Series Top Fuel champ Tyler Hilton and the Great Expectations III team have done it all and won it all in Top Fuel – except for one. The March Meet title has eluded their path of dominance. A healthy dose of California sun, great track conditions, and that elusive nitro consistency proved to be the combo as team Hilton finally broke through for a March Meet victory at the recent 68th running of the event. Qualifying found many of the teams dusting off the cobwebs of 2025 in search of a 2026 winning formula. Visalia’s Overtime Special team, with Tyler Hester in the seat, took top qualifying honors, running an all-time best pass at 5.67 at 224.66 MPH. Tyler Hilton and Pete Kaiser, who battled down to the wire for the 2025 Top Fuel crown, landed No. 2 and 3, respectively, with solid 5.70-zone passes. Michael Hilton and Frank McBee both ran their personal best ETs to date, a pair of 5.74s, to hold down the fourth and fifth spots. Making his Top Fuel debut in spectacular fashion was seven-time NHRA Heritage Series Funny Car champ Bobby Cottrell, whose 5.98 landed him No. 6 on the ladder. Of note and on the bump was second-generation nitro ace Adam Sorokin in the sleek Champion Speed Shop entry. Adam’s father, Mike Sorokin, won this very event 60 years ago in the legendary Surfers fueler. Come eliminations, the unpredictability of nitro racing was on full display. No. 1 qualifier Hester was beat in round one when his throttle cable broke on the hit, allowing Sorokin to run his weekend best of 5.91 for the win. Michael Hilton won with a 6.77 and .309 RT when McBee red-lit away his March Meet chances. Tyler Hilton and Kaiser both won their opening rounds, setting up a huge semifinal showdown. In the semis, Michael Hilton ended Sorokin’s title quest with a 5.75 @236.96, then Kaiser and Tyler Hilton rolled into the burnout box for battle. Kaiser left first – way first with a .05 holeshot – but unlike last year’s final, Hilton ran him down at the top end to punch his ticket to the final – 5.68 to a losing 5.81 for Kaiser. In the final it was uncle Michael Hilton vs. nephew Tyler Hilton for the 2026 March Meet title. Michael left early and tripped the red light, while Tyler stormed to an unbeatable 5.71 at 265.09 for the win – his very first March Meet title…finally. The Real DNA of the Cafe Racer
You scroll through listings and see a stock motorcycle called a cafe racer. That label makes you pause. You start to question what the term really means and how it shifted from a specific culture to a broad marketing phrase. You see how faster machines, rock music, and youth identity shaped a style built on both performance and image.
