Did Suzuki Just Change Its Mind About an Electric Jimny?
Suzuki may have had a change of heart (again) regarding the electrification of its quintessential, no-nonsense off-roader—the Jimny mini SUV. You may recall that in 2023, at the presentation of its product roadmap for Europe until 2030, Suzuki teased the launch of an electric off-roader that had the unmistakable boxy silhouette of a Jimny. At the time, the automaker projected a battery electric lineup consisting of five models, including the Jimny (see presentation slide below). Suzuki But then in late 2024, when Suzuki unveiled its first-ever production EV, the e-Vitara SUV, company president Toshihiro Suzuki said the Jimny would never be electric as the weight of the battery pack and electric motors would “ruin” one of the model’s signature qualities, namely lightness. Suzuki also said the Jimny must remain “true to itself,” something that would not be possible with an all-electric powertrain. Interestingly, Suzuki at the time ruled out any other form of electrification for the Jimny, including mild-hybrid, full hybrid or plug-in hybrid. Is This the Jimny EV Testing or a Facelifted Variant? Or None? Fast forward to 2026 and Suzuki appears to be doing a 180 again on the issue of the electric Jimny. A photo of a Jimny prototype undergoing testing in snowy conditions has surfaced online, and it may suggest Suzuki has started work on an all-electric Jimny. Mind you, there's a big question mark here, and that regards the authenticity of the photo. Assuming the photo is real, why is this test vehicle fully camouflaged? It could be because it hides a facelift or because it's a new variant, likely an all-electric one—just look at the closed-off front grille, which is one of the most common identifying marks of a battery electric model. CarSauce was among the first outlets to report on the spotting, and as it points out, the Jimny prototype appears to retain the ICE version’s solid front axle, suggesting the battery-powered Jimny could have the same hardcore off-road character as the gas-powered model. Obviously, that would be great news, as the Jimny should remain equally capable off the beaten track regardless of the powertrain it packs. Now, as you’ve probably noticed already, the prototype has a four-door body, which is only produced in India by Maruti Suzuki; it's also right-hand drive. Jimny EV Would Allow the Iconic Nameplate to Return to Europe Jacob Oliva/Autoblog Does this mean the Jimny EV will be an India-only model? Not necessarily, because the current Jimny four-door, often referred to as the Jimny XL, is also exported from India to various regions, including Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, Australia, and Japan. More importantly, an electric Jimny would allow a return to Europe for the iconic nameplate, which was phased out from the region in mid-2025 after the remaining stock of Jimny two-seater commercial vehicles ran out. Back to the electric Jimny prototype, Suzuki hasn’t even confirmed the model let alone announce any powertrain details, but we have to assume that if it's indeed happening, a dual-motor AWD system should be a given. Jacob Oliva/Autoblog Suzuki offers a dual-motor AWD powertrain in the e-Vitara, but it’s unclear whether that one can be adapted to work in the Jimny EV, which must retain its rugged off-road capability, including low-speed control (i.e. low range gearing), wheel articulation and solid underbody protection. The cool thing about a Jimny EV would be that it would likely have more torque than the current gas-powered model, which would be great news for off-road driving since EVs deliver maximum torque instantly. The gas-powered Jimny only offers 96 pound-feet of torque from its naturally aspirated 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine. Styling-wise, the only difference between the alleged Jimny EV prototype and the gas model besides the closed-off grille is the presence of horizontal LED DRLs, which hint at a revamped front end. We hope Suzuki won’t do anything too radical, though, as a Jimny must always remain instantly recognizable as a Jimny, electric or not. View the full article

Fiat Raises 500e Price by $5,000 With Almost Nothing New
The Price Is Right?EV sales have been stagnant as of late, while the current crisis in stable oil prices has prompted buyers to consider EVs, sales haven't really exploded just yet. Key indicators of the overall EV sales slump have mostly pointed to the cost of these vehicles. In fact, most argue that EVs are now cheaper than gasoline, but advise looking at secondhand options rather than brand-new ones. Given that price is a big factor for buyers, it would make sense to keep prices low to entice people into the EV lifestyle. Yet for 2026, Stellantis has decided to increase the price of the 2026 Fiat 500e. Fiat What's New? Not much...Mind you, this isn't just an outright price bump for the sake of it; Fiat did announce that for 2026, the 500e will enjoy a few additional features. According to the official press release from Stellantis, the 2026 model will be available in the United States starting this summer. One new addition to the 2026 500e is a colorway called Miami Sunset, which joins the already expansive and playful list of colors. Design-wise, the 2026 500e is the same, still looking like a sleek modern version of the brand's historic mini-car. Inside the 500e, the interior is the same as before, except for a body-colored dashboard on the Pop variant. If you go for an Icona, the dashboard is Pearl regardless of what exterior color you choose. Also available as an option for 2026 is a JBL sound system tuned by famous Opera singer Andrea Bocelli, which, according to them, enhances the "Made in Italy" feel, in addition to the better audio quality. As part of the announcement by Fiat, the 2024-2026 500e now adheres to the NACS charging port layout. This will give them access to V3 and V4 Tesla Superchargers via adapters available for purchase at Stellantis low-emission vehicle (LEV)-certified dealerships and on Mopar.com. Looking at it from a performance aspect also shows that there aren't any updates to the 500e's capabilities. It has a range of 149 miles, with the brand touting fast charging. Using an 85-kW public fast charger will add 31 miles of range in just 5 minutes of charging. Fiat Not Worth The Hefty Price BumpBefore the price bump, the Fiat 500e had starting prices of $32,500 for the Icona and $30,500 for the Inspi(RED). For the 2026 models, prices now start at $37,700 and $35,700 without destination fees. That's a $5,200 increase across the board. We honestly can't tell why, considering all they did was add a new color and give an option to pay more ($750) for a JBL sound system. The price increase is also a head-scratcher, given that sales of the 500e in the U.S. fell 91% in Q1 2026 compared to Q1 2025. Fiat View the full article

Failed EV Startup Bollinger Motors Forced to Sell Everything After Court Ruling
Out of Business EV startup, Bollinger, is facing a court order that will officially put it out of business, possibly for good. The company's assets will be auctioned off to cover its unpaid bills. Suppliers sued and won, so the court is now ordering the defunct EV company to sell its assets to pay what it owes. Founded in Hobart, New York, in 2014, Bollinger Motors aimed to develop an electric off-road vehicle. Taking cues from classics, Bollinger's first few efforts looked a lot like the classic Land Rover Defenders or vintage Ford Broncos. Fast forward to 2022, and Mullen Automotive bought a controlling stake in the company and redirected it away from consumer to commercial vehicles. After a while, the company closed its doors by the end of November 2025. The date is now April 2026, and it appears that Bollinger's current situation may see its doors closed permanently, with the company selling off its remaining assets to pay its suppliers, Crain's Detroit reports. Bollinger Motors Assets for Liabilities Once a venture for electric off-roaders, now a commercial-vehicle brand headed to the auction block. According to the report, the assets and equipment under Bollinger will be sold off at an online auction. While it may not sound like a great deal to you and me, perhaps other businesses could find uses for the equipment, such as battery testing and validation systems, and vehicle lifts and tooling. There are also other assets that are up for grabs, probably office equipment, furnishings, and inventory parts and units that didn't sell. Apart from the assets, more than 20 units of the Bollinger B4 Class 4 electric truck will be made available. Whether or not it's a good idea to purchase a car from a defunct company is up to the buyer's discretion, but don't let me stop you. More Liabilities Apart from not being able to pay its suppliers, Bollinger is also facing investigations by the Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity, following numerous complaints about unpaid wages and benefits to its employees. Bollinger stated that it would invest $44 million in the Detroit auto industry and create 237 jobs. However, it appears that the promise will remain unfulfilled. Now, the Michigan Economic Development Corp. is seeking about $1,000,000 of the $3,000,000 grant disbursed to the company in 2023. Bollinger Motors Bollinger to Bounce Back? While Bollinger Motors may not bounce back from this, perhaps its founder and former CEO could make something of the situation. Robert Bollinger bought the intellectual property and prototypes of the original B1 and B2 models for less than $250,000. This was done after a receivership order from a judge in Ohio. While we might not see his name on the masthead, a new brand may rise, based on the two electric off-roaders that Bollinger wanted to make in the first place. Although it might be a good idea not to use his last name on the next one. View the full article

Rivian R2 Launch Package Adds $2,500 in Features at No Extra Cost
Rivian Turns Up the ValueRivian’s projected volume seller, the all-new R2, is currently open for reservations, with the top-spec Performance trim arriving first. The electric vehicle maker is also sweetening the deal with a limited-time Launch Package for the R2 Performance, adding several features at no extra cost, including Autonomy+ for the lifetime of the vehicle. Autonomy+, similar to systems like General Motors’ Super Cruise, provides advanced driver-assistance features, including Universal Hands-Free, which, as the name suggests, allows users to drive hands-free on 3.5 million miles of roads across the U.S. and Canada, according to Rivian. Thanks to the Launch Package, it saves customers $49.99 per month or $2,500 for lifetime access to Autonomy+. Rivian Early Buyers Get the Good StuffRivian R2 Performance units with the Launch Package are also offered with an exclusive, extra-cost paint upgrade called Launch Green. This exterior color was inspired by the e-coat process used during development of its larger EV sibling, the R1, with the return deemed “even more special.” The green motif extends to the key fob, which, as part of the Launch Package, comes finished in a special Rivian Green anodized coating. The limited-time deal also includes the towing package with a 4,400-pound towing capacity – surpassing the 3,500-pound rating of the Tesla Model Y when equipped with its tow package. The Performance trim is equipped with a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive setup producing 656 horsepower. It also offers an estimated range of 330 miles, based on preliminary EPA figures. Rivian also noted other exterior paint options, including standard Esker Silver, Catalina Cove, Half Moon Grey, Glacier White, Midnight, and Forest Green (later availability). Inside, the EV can be configured with either Black Crater Signature or Coastal Cloud Signature, with the latter becoming available later. Rivian A Crucial Step ForwardAside from cost savings, the Launch Package could help the R2 Performance retain a stronger appeal than base configurations, potentially supporting resale value while adding a layer of exclusivity. That matters for Rivian as it works toward profitability, with the R1 lineup becoming more niche and the R2 positioned as its mass-market contender. The R2 Performance starts at $57,990, putting it on par with the Tesla Model Y Performance. More affordable trims are coming, including the mid-spec R2 Premium at $53,990 and the entry-level R2 Standard at $48,490, with the latter expected to arrive later in 2027. A Manual Honda Civic Exists, But it Looks Like a Dodge Challenger
Humble BeginningsMitsuoka is known as Japan's "off-center" automotive manufacturer. It is responsible for some of the most memorable-looking and genuinely unique cars ever, using new car models as a base and retrofitting a classic exterior design, making them Mitsuoka creations. What started out as a small shop back in 1968, Mitsuoka is now regarded as a true automotive manufacturer in Japan, and its latest new model is a manual version of the Honda Civic, celebrating Mitsuoka's long car-making history. Mitsuoka View the 2 images of this gallery on the original article Civic ChalengerMitsuoka's M55 was built and conceptualized to celebrate its 55-years in the industry, but the twist is the design. Mitsuoka has chosen to make the M55 resemble the Dodge Challenger from the '70s. Another car that inspired the final design of the M55 is the Nissan Skyline "Kenmeri." Using the Honda Civic as a base, Mitsuoka has added another limited edition variant, the M55 RS. The concept for this car actually debuted as far back as 2023. At the time, it was built only as a celebration project, with no plans to put the concept into production. Lucky for us, things have changed. Looks-wise, the M55 RS resembles the Challenger more than the Skyline; the front end is unmistakably Dodge. The side profile retains much of the Civic's, while the rear is a mix of different elements, but the coolest touch is the slatted rear vents attached to the rear window panel, a very retro homage. Its interior remains largely unchanged from the Civic that it's based on, with a very familiar layout and materials. The biggest change would be the seating upholstery, now adorned with sporty red accents, faux-carbon trim, and vintage-style seats with blue upholstery and metal eyelets reminiscent of '70s racing seats. Mechanically speaking, it will use the Honda Civic RS powertrain, a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine making 180 hp, mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. Mitsuoka View the 2 images of this gallery on the original article Limited Edition PricingThe M55 RS will be a very limited-edition model; Mitsuoka is producing only 55 units. Also, the Civic's similarities end at design and the shared powertrain, because the price will make the Civic blush. The Mitsuoka M55 RS will be sold for approximately $55,800 (converted), almost double the price of a normal Civic RS. Interestingly, there is another version of this car, a less limited edition. The M55 1st edition is still based on the Civic but in a less sporty trim. The 1st edition is powered by a 2.0-liter e:HEV with a CVT. Prices start at around $50,000 (converted), and only 250 units are planned for 2026. Mitsuoka View the full article

Hyundai Ioniq 9 Could Hit $80,000 With New Black Ink Trim
Hyundai’s Priciest EV Is Climbing Even HigherThe Hyundai Ioniq 9 sits at the top of the brand’s EV lineup in the US, and it’s easy to see why. It’s a three-row SUV with a big battery, plenty of space for families, and enough premium features to make you wonder if you’re still looking at a Hyundai. Even the base Ioniq 9 comes in just under $60,000, making it Hyundai’s most expensive EV here. Step up to higher trims with bigger wheels, nicer materials, and more tech, and you’re quickly looking at a price north of $70,000. Now, Hyundai is pushing things further with the 2027 Ioniq 9 AWD Performance Calligraphy Black Ink. This new top trim brings more exclusive features and a higher level of finish. Pricing isn’t out yet, but it’s likely this will be Hyundai’s first mainstream EV to approach the $80,000 mark. Hyundai Black Ink Means Black EverythingAs the name suggests, the Calligraphy Black Ink is built around a darker, more premium look. Finished exclusively in Abyss Black Pearl, it gets a full suite of blacked-out design details that give the already large SUV a cleaner and more dramatic road presence. You get black chrome on the front skid plate and rear trim, gloss-black roof rails, black window moldings, black door handles, and even a black Hyundai badge up front. The prominent feature is a set of 21-inch black Turbine Design wheels, which you’ll only find on this trim. Inside, the black theme carries over with black aluminum trim, a black steering wheel, and black upholstery for all six seats. Both the first and second rows get Relaxation Seats with power recline and ventilation, while the third row is heated. There’s also a panoramic roof, Bose 14-speaker audio, a 10-inch head-up display, and Hyundai’s latest Remote Smart Parking Assist. For EV practicality, you get Vehicle-to-Load, several 100-watt USB-C ports, and a built-in NACS charging port. Hyundai Why $80,000 Doesn’t Sound UnrealisticThis version uses Hyundai’s strongest Ioniq 9 setup: a dual-motor AWD system producing 422 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 110.3-kWh battery pack. Hyundai says its 800-volt system supports 350-kW DC fast charging, allowing a 10 to 80 percent charge in around 24 minutes under ideal conditions. The bigger question is price. Hyundai hasn’t released numbers yet for the Calligraphy Black Ink, but there are already enough clues. The current top-spec 2026 Ioniq 9 Calligraphy Design starts at $76,490 before options, and that’s before any likely price adjustments for the 2027 model year. Factor in the exclusive styling, extra trim details, and the inevitable yearly price increases, and it’s easy to see the Black Ink landing right around $80,000, possibly even a bit more. It still wears a Hyundai badge, but this one is clearly targeting buyers who are shopping for a luxury SUV. Hyundai View the 7 images of this gallery on the original article View the full article

480-HP Ford Mustang GT Joins Police to Crack Down on Speeders
The Pursuit of SpeedA report from CBS6 Albany highlights the addition of 19 Ford Mustang GT units to the New York State Police fleet. While not as utilitarian as a Ford Explorer, the department says the Mustangs can support enforcement efforts – particularly in aggressive driving, excessive speeding, and deterrence. This Mustang model is based on the latest S650 generation. One of the 19 units was used as a prototype for training and evaluation, with the first deployment set for this week in Troop G. The rest of the fleet will be outfitted with emergency lighting, communications, and safety equipment before entering service in the coming weeks. The Heart of the MustangThe Mustang GT is powered by a 5.0-liter Coyote V8, making it the more potent option over the 2.3-liter EcoBoost inline-four with 480 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque. It is also available from the factory with either a 6-speed manual or a 10-speed automatic, though the report did not specify which transmission was chosen for the New York State Police fleet. Given the cabin equipment typically installed in modern police vehicles, however, it is reasonable to assume the department opted for the automatic. The car may be fast, but it is not ideal for year-round use. The department said the Mustangs will only be used from April to October due to weather limitations. The Mustang comes standard with rear-wheel drive, which is often preferred for track use, but all-wheel drive remains the more ideal choice in winter because it sends power to all four wheels for added grip. As such, the Mustangs will be sidelined in favor of the department’s SUVs during the colder months. CBS6 Albany Value in a V8 PackageThose concerned about cost should note that the department said the Mustangs come in about 30% cheaper than patrol SUVs. For reference, the Mustang GT Fastback starts at $46,560, excluding destination fees. Speaking about the new police cars, which are considered a “strategic addition,” Superintendent Steven G. James said, “The Mustang enhances our ability to conduct traffic enforcement while reinforcing our commitment to protecting the public on New York’s roadways.” Elsewhere in the U.S., some states have also deployed fast police cars, including electric models like the Tesla Cybertruck used by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. Others are seized vehicles repurposed for police outreach, such as the Ohio State Highway Patrol’s 797-horsepower Dodge Challenger Hellcat Redeye. CBS6 Albany View the full article

Range Rover SV Ultra Is So Exclusive, You Need an Invite to Buy One
You Need More Than Money for This Range RoverThe entry-level Range Rover already starts above $113,000, and prices climb quickly as you move up the range. The special SV models, in particular, can easily double that starting figure. Now, Land Rover has added another layer of exclusivity with the Range Rover SV Ultra. This isn’t just a higher trim with extra features. The SV Ultra will only be available by invitation, with Range Rover selecting who gets the opportunity to buy. In other words, having the funds isn’t enough – Range Rover’s approval is required. The goal is to position the SV Ultra above the existing SV and SV Black models, offering another tier of exclusivity. It brings additional premium materials and technology to support the Ultra name, at least in terms of features. Land Rover View the 4 images of this gallery on the original article Subtle Outside, Serious StatementVisually, the Range Rover SV Ultra maintains the familiar Range Rover profile. The most noticeable exterior change is the Titan Silver paint, which is exclusive to the SV Ultra. Land Rover uses fine aluminum flakes and specialized pigments to achieve a reflective, liquid-metal effect. The result is more understated than showy. Satin Platinum Atlas and Silver Chrome accents complement the paint, appearing on the grille and side graphics. The 23-inch wheels feature Satin Platinum inserts and new center caps. These are details that may go unnoticed by most, but owners will appreciate them. Land Rover View the 4 images of this gallery on the original article The Cabin Is the Real ShowpieceThe interior is where the SV Ultra distinguishes itself. The cabin features a leather-free Orchid White and Cinder Grey Ultrafabrics upholstery, with a laser-cut mosaic pattern on the seats. A new rattan palm veneer with an open-pore finish adds to the lighter, more modern atmosphere. But the real headline is the new SV Electrostatic Sound system. Land Rover calls it a world-first, using 21 lightweight electrostatic speakers built into the headrests, seatbacks, and other cabin areas to create what it describes as a personal concert hall for each passenger. The sound system is paired with Body and Soul Seats, which use seat-integrated transducers to deliver physical feedback from music. The Sensory Floor adds haptic feedback beneath the footwells, creating a full-body listening experience that is both unusual and technically impressive. Six wellness modes are included, designed to help reduce stress or improve focus during drives. Land Rover View the 4 images of this gallery on the original article Expect the Price to Climb Even HigherRange Rover says the SV Ultra will be offered with either the P550e plug-in hybrid or the P615 V8, while a fully electric version is expected later this year. Official pricing is still unannounced. Given that the Range Rover SV Black is already priced around $240,000, the SV Ultra is expected to command a higher figure due to its exclusivity and additional features. Hyundai Recalls Elantra and Tucson Again as Airbags May Not Deploy Properly
Hyundai has recalled two popular models in the United States for a potential airbag issue. Due to misassembled airbag sensors, the airbags in certain Elantra sedan and Tucson crossover models may not deploy correctly, increasing the risk of injury in a crash. This isn’t the first airbag-related recall to hit Hyundai, as over 500,000 Palisades were recalled for a separate airbag fault earlier this year. The new Elantra/Tucson recall involves far fewer models but is still a significant safety risk, so here’s everything you need to know. Hyundai Airbag Recall Hyundai This Hyundai recall affects the following models: 2026 Hyundai Tucson, Tucson Hybrid, and Tucson Plug-in Hybrid2026 Hyundai Elantra2025 Hyundai Elantra NIn total, 2,931 of these Hyundais are implicated in this recall. Most of those are Tucson Hybrids, with 2,299 of these models specifically impacted. According to the recall notice on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s website, these vehicles may have misassembled side impact sensors in the B-pillars. Specifically, these sensors were assembled with incorrect printed circuit boards. In certain crash scenarios, this issue can affect the timing of airbag deployment. If an airbag doesn’t deploy at precisely the right time, it can result in an increased injury risk. Given that these sensors are located in the B-pillar, it likely affects deployment of the side airbags only, although the automaker didn’t state this explicitly in the recall report. Hyundai says it is unaware of any incidents, crashes, or injuries related to the fault. What Owners Should Do Now Hyundai Hyundai will send out notification letters to affected vehicle owners by June 19, 2026. Before then, owners of one of these vehicles can visit the NHTSA website to find out if their model is affected. This can be done by adding the Vehicle Identification Number on the site. The Hyundai customer care service can also be contacted on 855-371-9460 for more information, using recall number 299. Affected models will undergo an inspection and have the impact sensors replaced if necessary, at no charge to the customer. Airbag recalls continue to be fairly frequent, affecting multiple auto brands. Earlier in April, Ford had to issue a recall for faulty airbag sensors on the Bronco Sport and Maverick. Another airbag sensor issue hit Lexus in March, affecting the full-size LX SUV. These devices are potentially life-saving, but as they’ve become more effective, they’ve also become more complex. Sensors have become more advanced, allowing airbags to deploy only when necessary. They can also deploy at different forces, based on the size of an occupant in a certain seat, thereby limiting injuries to smaller or younger passengers. Unfortunately, these safety devices are double-edged swords. They can save lives when operating correctly, but there’s more that can go wrong, even on relatively new vehicles. It’s the price to pay for vehicles that are far safer than previous generations. View the full article

Toyota Sues Dealer After $5.1 Million in Vehicles Go Missing
Toyota Credit Drops the Hammer on Dealer GroupMore and more car companies seem to be cleaning house, and Toyota Motor Credit Corporation is the latest to do so. According to a report from Automotive News, the captive lender has filed a lawsuit against a Connecticut dealership group, alleging millions in financial exposure tied to questionable inventory practices. At the center of the case is Stephen CadillacGMC in Bristol, which also operates a Toyota franchise under the same ownership umbrella. According to the complaint, a routine floorplan audit conducted on March 27 uncovered a major discrepancy. Sixteen vehicles valued at over $1.4 million were unaccounted for, triggering immediate concern from the lender. Floorplan financing is a lifeline for dealerships, allowing them to stock inventory while the lender retains a lien. When vehicles disappear without repayment, it is considered an “out-of-trust” sale, one of the most serious breaches in dealer financing. Getty Images Missing Cars, Mounting DebtThe situation escalated quickly after the initial audit findings. Toyota Credit alleges that additional vehicles were removed from the dealership in the days that followed, compounding the issue. In total, the lender claims the group owes more than $5.1 million, including over $3 million tied to floorplan and capital loans. The complaint accuses the defendants of improperly disposing of collateral through sales, leases, or other transfers without settling their obligations. The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Connecticut on April 4, seeks more than just financial damages. Toyota Credit is also seeking injunctive relief to prevent further transfer of assets and is asking the court to grant possession of the missing vehicles. The dealership’s president, Stephen Barbarino Jr., who personally guaranteed the loans, is also named in the complaint. Legal counsel for the dealership has indicated that efforts are underway to resolve the dispute. Getty Retail Trend? This case underscores a growing trend in the retail auto space where lenders and OEM-backed finance arms are taking a harder stance on compliance. Floorplan audits are becoming more aggressive, and tolerance for discrepancies is shrinking. With car companies like Toyota feeling the squeeze from regulatory fronts, tightening credit conditions, and rising vehicle values, lenders simply cannot afford to look the other way when inventory goes missing. From an industry standpoint, this is less about a single dealership and more about systemic risk management. Out-of-trust situations erode confidence in dealer financing models and can ripple across lender portfolios. Expect more scrutiny, more audits, and more legal action as automakers and their finance arms work to protect margins in an increasingly volatile market. View the full article

Mazda Files CX-40 Trademark for New SUV Between CX-30 and CX-50
No Shortage of Crossovers at MazdaIf you head to your nearest Mazda showroom, you're pretty much greeted by a whole barrage of crossovers. Sure, there's the Mazda 3 and MX-5, but the rest of the lineup consists of hatchbacks and wagons on tall tires. It's what the public keeps buying, and it's what every automaker keeps churning. In Mazda's case, there's the CX-30 as a stepping stone, followed by the all-new CX-5 and the not-as-new CX-50. For those who'd like something more upmarket, one can choose the CX-60, CX-70, and CX-90. Outside of the U.S, there's even the CX-80, an elongated CX-60 with an extra row of seats, and the CX-6e, which is a result of its partnership with Chinese automaker Changan. Earl Lee/Autoblog And Another One?So, Mazda has a crossover for every size, tax bracket, and budget, but it seems that it's not stopping with its current lineup. The company recently filed a trademark for the CX-40, suggesting that it could build a model that slots in between the CX-30 and CX-5/CX-50. It was registered in the U.S Patent and Trademark Office on February 27, 2026. Should Mazda actually build it, it won't be the first time the company has made a crossover model with '4' in its name. From 2016 to 2025, Mazda introduced a model called the CX-4, and to no one's surprise, it slotted between the CX-3 and CX-5. It was exclusive to the Chinese market and adapted a more wagon-like profile with a lower roof. Think of it then as a jacked-up Mazda 3 hatchback in the same vein as the CX-30, but made longer. Mazda But Wait, There's MoreThe thing is, it wasn't just the CX-40 that we saw in the trademark database. Also present was CX-10, and given Mazda's naming convention, this might as well be the name of its smallest crossover should it decide to build it. Curiously, there was also a trademark for CX-20, though it was filed way back in 2020. If you recall, the Mazda Vision X Compact Concept shown at the 2025 Japan Mobility Show has all the potential to be produced. Mazda recently invested heavily in its facility in Thailand to build more compact hybrids, and the car that could be called CX-10 or CX-20 could be made there. As for something we can actually expect soon, the next-generation CX-30 is coming soon. It could be revealed a few years from now. There's no exact timeline just yet, but given the age of the current model, it'll only be a matter of time. Jacob Oliva/Autoblog View the full article

BMW iX3 Claims 434 Miles of Range, Leaving Rivals Far Behind
When BMW unveiled the iX3 electric crossover last year, it claimed an impressive 400-mile range on a full charge. It’s one of the iX3’s headlining figures, easily traveling further with a full battery than rivals like the Porsche Macan Electric and Audi SQ6 e-tron. But BMW has now published an even more impressive range figure for its first Neue Klasse SUV, raising the bar once more before the model arrives in the summer of 2026. Up to 434 Miles of Range BMW China The new range figure is up to 434 miles, which is based on preliminary BMW AG estimations. While the published range of new European EVs are often based on the optimistic WLTP cycle, BMW says the iX3’s 434-mile range is derived from EPA testing procedures. In other words, this is a realistic expectation of how far you can expect to get when the 108-kWh battery is fully juiced up. Here’s a look at how the iX3’s range compares to other similar EVs. EV Maximum Range BMW iX3 434 miles Audi Q6 e-tron 321 miles Porsche Macan Electric 309 miles Cadillac Optiq 317 Miles Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class 444 miles (WLTP cycle) Genesis Electrified GV70 263 miles Nothing in this segment comes close to the iX3’s range. The upcoming Mercedes GLC gets closest, but its claimed figure is based on the WLTP cycle, so the EPA rating will be a lot lower. You have to move up into the full-size segment to get another electric SUV with over 400 miles of range, with those models including Rivian’s R1S and Cadillac’s massive and far more expensive Escalade IQ. Related: BMW iX3 Crowned World Car of the Year, First Since 2006 The iX3 Isn’t All About Range BMW The BMW iX3 is the first of a new generation of BMWs, with a design language and technology that will eventually be mirrored on other models from the brand. We’ve already seen this with the reveal of the i3 and the facelifted 7 Series, both of which adopt the iX3’s Panoramic Vision system. The iX3 will initially arrive in the U.S. in 50 xDrive form, with dual motors producing 463 horsepower. It will have standard all-wheel drive, but a single-motor variant and additional dual-motor models are expected in early 2027. With 800-volt architecture, the brilliant range of this EV is complemented by exceptionally fast charging. The battery can be replenished from 10 to 80% in only 21 minutes, with charging speeds of up to 400 kW. Initial impressions from European reviews suggest the iX3 rides and handles superbly for an electric SUV, and we look forward to testing it ourselves in the months ahead. Related: 5 Coolest Features Of The All-New BMW iX3 Final Thoughts BMW It’s been proven that most people can get by with a 300-mile EV and a home-charging setup. The iX3 far exceeds this expectation with its 434-mile range. If verified by the EPA, it will give the new BMW a significant edge over all its primary rivals. At around $60,000, it also brings a genuinely long-range SUV within reach of more buyers. Together with its forward-thinking styling, completely fresh interior design, and the promise of great driving dynamics, the iX3 could be the electric SUV to beat when it arrives here later in 2026. Volkswagen Taos Recalled Again Over One Wire That Could Cause a Fuel Leak
A Fresh Recall for the TaosVolkswagen’s smallest crossover in the U.S. lineup, the Taos, has been hit with another recall. After previously being called back for a software issue that could cause a dashboard blackout, approximately 38,710 units are now being recalled over a fuel-system defect that could pose a safety risk. According to NHTSA recall No. 26V258, affected Taos models may have a fuel tank pressure sensor wiring harness that is too short, creating tension. In a rear-end crash, that tension could dislodge the sensor on top of the fuel tank, potentially allowing fuel to leak in a subsequent rollover. The report noted that “leaking fuel in the presence of an ignition source could result in a fire.” Volkswagen It All Comes Down to One WireThe safety campaign covers 2025–2026 Taos models, meaning vehicles from the crossover’s mid-cycle update for North America. The refreshed Taos gets updated bodywork for a bolder “baby Atlas” look, along with a revised powertrain. That includes an updated 1.5-liter turbocharged engine producing 174 horsepower, while the previous 7-speed DSG dual-clutch transmission has been replaced by an 8-speed torque-converter automatic. However, more than 38,000 Taos units, representing a 100% estimated defect rate, were manufactured with a fuel tank pressure sensor wiring harness that is too short. The issue was first discovered during a rear crash test on a 2025 model in March 2026. Volkswagen then conducted additional internal testing in accordance with FMVSS No. 301 before issuing the recall on April 15. Fortunately, Volkswagen is not aware of any crashes, injuries, or fires related to the issue. Volkswagen Getting It SortedAs part of the remedy, owners of affected Taos models will be asked to visit a VW dealer to have an 80 mm (3.1-inch) extension installed on the existing wiring harness to reduce tension. The service will be performed free of charge, but because the recalled vehicles are still covered by the New Vehicle Limited Warranty, a reimbursement plan will not be offered. Owners will be notified on or before June 19, 2026, though VINs are scheduled to become searchable starting April 29, 2026. The automaker said newer Taos vehicles are planned to receive a longer wiring harness in production starting in calendar week 20 of 2026, or around mid-May. For reference, the model starts at $26,500, excluding destination fees. Volkswagen View the 3 images of this gallery on the original article View the full article

This Rocket-Boosted EV Claims 0–62 in 0.9 Seconds
Next year will mark the 10th anniversary of the second-generation Tesla Roadster’s reveal in prototype form, and there’s still no sign of a production model yet. The new Tesla Roadster has been delayed at least eight times since its initial unveiling in 2017, with the latest estimates suggesting a production start in 2027 or 2028. Given that time frame, there’s a high chance a surprise Chinese electric supercar equipped with rocket boosters will beat the Roadster—including its optional SpaceX package featuring 10 cold-gas thrusters—to market. We’re talking about the Nebula Next 01 Jet Edition, a bonkers electric four-door supercar project coming from the most unlikely of manufacturers—Chinese robot vacuum maker Dreame Technology (which also makes a bunch of other smart home appliances). The Rocket-Boosted Electric Supercar That Came Out of NowhereUnveiled yesterday at the Dreame Next event San Francisco, the Nebula Next 01 Jet Edition is a rocket-powered electric vehicle featuring a custom-built dual solid-fuel rocket booster system that gives it otherworldly performance—at least on paper. Dreame Technology claims a neck-snapping 0-62 mph time of 0.9 seconds, which is unprecedented for a production vehicle. Not even the world’s quickest EV, the 2,200-hp Ford Mustang Cobra Jet 2200, can come close, as the electric dragster goes from 0 to 60 mph in 1.66 seconds. Dreame says in a press release that the Nebula Next 01 Jet Edition’s rocket booster system responds in 150 milliseconds and generates a peak thrust of 100 kN—the equivalent of 22,480 pounds pushing down due to gravity. No other powertrain or performance specs were disclosed, but Dreame did say the vehicle uses a CTP 4.0 (cell-to-pack) battery integration technology, which removes the traditional crossbeams and longitudinal beams from the battery pack to free up vertical space in the chassis. The company also said the car includes an ultra-high-definition DHX1 LiDAR unit for advanced driving assist features. Vaporware or the Real Deal? Dreame Technology The Jet Edition appears to be based on the Dreame Nebula 1 electric supercar concept that debuted earlier this year at CES. That vehicle allegedly has a total of 1,876 horsepower from four electric motors and is capable of sprinting from 0 to 62 mph in 1.8 seconds. Before dismissing the Nebula as vaporware, Dreame claims it has been working on its first car project for more than a decade, with the Nebula Next 01 Jet Edition pitched as a statement of its engineering. Dreame says that its decision to build vehicles “came only after the company had accumulated sufficient depth in technology, organization, capital, and global capability.” Dreame Technology So, what’s next? Last year, Dreame announced plans to build a factory outside Berlin, Germany, not far from Tesla’s Gigafactory Berlin; it hasn’t provided an update on the status of the plant project since. The company says it aims to start production of the Nebula Next 01 Jet Edition there in 2027, which is an insane timeline until you realize Chinese companies operate at a completely different speed than their western counterparts. The Autopian sent an engineer at the reveal of the Nebula Next 01 Jet Edition concept and he wasn’t very impressed, noting that the two rockets at the rear have no gaps around them and “everything has been blocked by plastic covers.” Plus, the vehicle has no air inlets and outlets, and the grilles are decorative and blocked off. His conclusion was that those aren’t actual rockets, they’re just made to look like the real thing. Of course, there’s also the possibility that the vehicle is just a design buck showcased for illustration purposes only, and a functional prototype exists somewhere. We’ll see if that’s the case if we ever hear about this rocked-powered EV supercar again. Dreame Technology View the full article

The Next Porsche 911 GT3 Might Be Turbocharged, But There's Another Alternative
The writing has been on the wall for the naturally aspirated engine that makes the Porsche 911 GT3 so exciting for some time now. When the 992.2 facelift appeared, Porsche had to take extreme measures, such as two particulate filters and four catalytic converters, just to maintain the same horsepower output without falling afoul of emissions regulations, and the 4.0-liter boxer lost torque on the way. For the next generation, however, Zuffenhausen's finest may not be able to maintain the pure character of the GT3, with Car and Driver reporting that the engine may have to be turbocharged to meet global emissions regulations, particularly those in Europe. Of course, America does not follow the same stringent standards, but Europe's legislation may impact what we get anyway. Turbocharged GT3 Looks Likely, But So Do Other Options Porsche When C&D spoke with Andreas Preuninger, head of the GT line, the publication asked how much longer the naturally aspirated six-cylinder engine could survive without either forced induction or hybrid assistance. His reply was measured and somber: "In America, I don't know. Quite some time, maybe. In Europe, probably only a few years without any substantial changes." Preuninger was then asked if turbocharging was a possible solution for the GT3, and he replied, "It might be." In other words, Porsche is still trying to decide how best to proceed, and all the options look fairly disappointing for fans of the free-breathing engine. Related: What If Your Porsche’s Racing Stripes Could Appear and Disappear on Demand? The best-case scenario from an enthusiast's point of view would be for Porsche to spend fortunes further developing the current engine so that it can meet European Union requirements, using more lightweight materials and innovative exhaust systems, but that could cause the GT3's list price to soar. A naturally aspirated solution also needs to meet noise limits, and these measures may choke the engine's vocal cords, not to mention further reduce torque. Developing a whole new engine would also be costly. Turbocharging would solve the power problem but rob the car of its soul, and with a turbocharged GT2 usually sitting at the top of the lineup, not to mention the existence of the ridiculously fast 911 Turbo, the GT3 would only struggle to justify its place. Would buyers still be interested? GT3 Hybrid Seems Like the Logical Choice Porsche Electrification adds considerable weight and complexity, but it seems like the right path forward if Porsche can optimize in every department. The T-Hybrid system in the 911 Carrera GTS and now the 911 Turbo could be refined to reduce weight. Perhaps instead of being used for outright performance, Porsche might use an electric motor to push the car along at low speeds and leave it out of the equation during spirited driving, thus keeping the focus on the engine and potentially improving overall combined emissions. Ultimately, it's not financially viable for the U.S. market to get one sort of GT3 without forced induction or electrification and other markets to get what might be perceived as a watered-down version, but with Preuninger saying there are still "a few years" before the car is forced to adapt to EU rules, Porsche may yet find a solution that provides differentiation and satisfaction without too much compromise. BYD Confirms Talks to Join Formula 1
Eyes on the GridFollowing reports during last month’s Chinese Grand Prix that BYD was considering a move into Formula 1, Nikkei Asia has confirmed the automaker is now in talks with the series. BYD Vice President Stella Li said participating in the sport would be a good opportunity to “put our technology to the test.” That would be an interesting development, given that BYD does not have an extensive motorsports program. But for those who haven’t been following F1 closely, the 2026 engine regulations place greater emphasis on electric motors, particularly the motor-generator unit (MGU-K). It now has a near 50–50 power split with the 1.6-liter turbocharged V6, putting hybrid technology in the spotlight – something BYD already has in its portfolio. BYD Playing to Its StrengthsBYD offers a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle lineup called DM-i, but because the U.S. remains largely closed to China-made cars, these models are still unfamiliar to many. More recognizable, perhaps, is the automaker’s battery electric vehicle lineup, especially after making headlines for challenging Tesla in global BEV sales – and even surpassing it in 2025. Another hurdle is the “enormous cost” of entering F1. This would be even more significant if BYD somehow became the 12th team on the grid alongside McLaren and Mercedes-AMG. However, the report stated that the Chinese automaker does not necessarily need to establish a new team; becoming a power-unit supplier or sponsor is also on the table. Jacob Oliva/Autoblog A Global StageIf BYD successfully makes its way into F1, it would be a major boost for its brand, given that races are held across multiple continents. F1 also has a rich history that helped forge brands like Ferrari, and it is often described as the pinnacle of motorsport. If anything, BYD would need to bring its A-game. So far, though, the automaker has drawn attention after its luxury brand, Yangwang, set the record for the fastest production EV at the Nürburgring with the U9 Xtreme last year. Outside of motorsports, BYD has also been making moves by expanding into different regions and establishing plants in markets such as Europe. It is also a prime candidate to enter Canada after the country opened its doors to at least 49,000 EVs under a lower tariff in the first year of the deal. That was met with backlash from the U.S., which said China-made cars would not be allowed to cross the border. BYD View the 3 images of this gallery on the original article View the full article

Skip the Corvette Grand Sport X and Save Thousands With This Used E-Ray
Grand Sport X Replaces E-RayChevrolet recently announced the return of the Corvette Grand Sport with a new 6.7-liter V8 engine and a newly-introduced Grand Sport X hybrid version. The Grand Sport X takes the spot in the Corvette lineup formerly held by the E-Ray, with prices starting at $112,195 for the 2027 model (the non-hybrid Grand Sport costs $88,495). Chevrolet View the 2 images of this gallery on the original article That is a hefty sum to spend on a Corvette, especially considering the base Stingray is available for $73,495, but the Grand Sport X is still far off the price of the Z06 ($121,395), the ZR1 ($197,195), and ZR1X ($227,395). It also made us wonder; if you are willing to live with a bit less power and a subjectively less exciting name, how much could you save by purchasing a used E-Ray instead of a new Grand Sport X? Buy A Used E-Ray Bring A Trailer View the 3 images of this gallery on the original article A little over a week ago, we spotted a barely driven 2024 E-Ray go up for sale on Bring a Trailer, listed with only 286 miles on the odometer. The car sold for just $90,024, a discount of more than $34,501 from its original MSRP. That's a bargain, especially considering this particular example was a 3LZ trim equipped with the ZER Performance Package. The bold Accelerate Yellow Metallic color might have made this E-Ray less desirable to some buyers, but if you can live with a 1LZ trim or higher mileage, we found several examples listed for under $90,000. At the lowest, you can find a used E-Ray for as little as $85,000, about $27,000 less than a new Grand Sport X (before destination). Boring Name, Wild Performance Jared Rosenholtz/Autoblog View the 3 images of this gallery on the original article The E-Ray's lack of sales could be attributed to its name, which led many Corvette loyalists to believe it was electric due to the letter "E" at the beginning. By pivoting to the more familiar "Grand Sport" moniker and adding a more neutral letter like "X," Chevy hopes it can attract more buyers to the hybrid Corvette the same way they quickly embraced the ZR1X. Though its name may have deterred buyers, nothing about the E-Ray's performance is lacking. The 6.2-liter LT2 V8 and front electric motor combine to deliver 655 horsepower, good for a 2.5-second zero-to-60 mph run and a quarter-mile time of 10.5 seconds. The Grand Sport X should be quicker with its new 6.7-liter LS6 engine, cranking the total output to 721 hp, but Chevy has not quoted a 0-60 time yet as of this writing. The bigger engine and performance improvements might be worth an additional $27,000 to you, but if it's not, the E-Ray is already a used performance bargain and prices only have further to fall when the Grand Sport X arrives at dealers. Watch as Chevrolet Corvette ZR1X Beats McLaren Senna Again While Setting Two New Lap Records
The Chevrolet Corvette ZR1X may have lost its crown as the fastest American car at the Nürburgring to the Mustang GTD Competition, but it's far from done proving its abilities on track. In two YouTube clips embedded in this article, we see the 1,250-horsepower ZR1X claim two new lap records at American circuits, first at National Corvette Museum Motorsport Park, where it beat the time posted by the McLaren Senna, and then at Sonoma Raceway. It's not the first time the ZR1X has beaten the McLaren Senna, either, taking the record with a 2:34.2 lap time at Virginia International Raceway in February. ZR1X Shines Even Without Racing Drivers at the WheelEvery time Chevrolet has set a lap record with a ZR1 or ZR1X, it's done so without the help of professional racing drivers, and this time is no different. The time set at NCM Motorsport Park, 2:2.22, was set byDrew Cattell, the vehicle dynamics engineer who piloted the ZR1X around the Nürburgring, showing that even those without professional experience can be fast. The previous record was held by the McLaren Senna, which managed to perform a lap in 2:2.86. Similarly, the Sonoma Raceway lap record was set by a chassis controls engineer, Cody Bulkley, who managed to reach 148 mph heading into turn 1 before making it around the track in just 1:34.17 seconds. The previous record, 1:34.94, was set by a rear-wheel-drive Corvette ZR1, with "only" 1,064 hp. Both lap times are remarkable displays of both power and car control, and it's fitting that vehicle dynamics and chassis controls experts are the ones showing just how agile the ZR1X is, despite being a hybrid and powering all four wheels with more power than a Bugatti Veyron or Lamborghini Revuelto. But the truly remarkable bit about all this is that Chevy has extracted such world-beating straight-line and cornering performance without charging hypercar money. Corvette ZR1X Pricing Makes It a Relative BargainThe ZR1X starts at just $209,700 before options, and when the Revuelto costs over $600,000 and the Mustang GTD over $300,000, its record-breaking ability is even more impressive. This is genuinely hypercar performance for well-optioned Porsche 911 money, and it reminds us of when the R35 Nissan GT-R blew far pricier competition out of the water 17 years ago. The GT-R started at just under $70,000 in December 2009; the Ferrari 458 Italia started around $225,000, and it lost most performance comparisons to the plucky AWD four-seater. Granted, today's ZR1X is nearly twice as pricy as the GT-R when adjusting for inflation, but it's also twice as powerful and can do the standing quarter-mile in under 9 seconds without any modifications. That's surely worth celebrating. View the full article

BYD’s New $47,000 SUV Gets 30,000 Orders in a Day
BYD Sales Onslaught ContinuesBYD is not slowing down. Fresh off overtaking Tesla as the world’s top EV seller, the Chinese giant has unveiled its latest flagship SUV, the Great Tang. Within just 24 hours of launch, the model secured over 30,000 pre-orders, reinforcing the brand’s accelerating dominance in the global EV race and highlighting strong domestic appetite for high-end electrified SUVs. The Great Tang backs that hype with serious numbers and hardware. The rear-wheel-drive version delivers up to 950 km of CLTC range, positioning it among the longest-range SUVs in its class. The dual-motor all-wheel-drive variant produces 585 kW and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds. Fast charging is equally aggressive with a 10C rate and peak current of 1000A. Even better, plug-in hybrid variants expand their reach. The DM-i tech pairs a 1.5T engine with a 300 kW motor for efficiency. The DM-p uses dual motors with 400 kW and hits 62 mph in 4.3 seconds. Chassis tech includes DiSus-A dual-chamber air suspension, rear-wheel steering, and a tight 17-foot turning radius. Cabin technology features lidar-assisted driving, a 3 nm cockpit chip, and a 27-speaker Devialet sound system. BYD View the 3 images of this gallery on the original article Demand Could Be Even HigherAccording to CarNewsChina, Early dealer data suggests the initial 30,000-unit figure may only tell part of the story. Some channel checks point to actual orders being significantly higher, with internal estimates hinting the number could approach double that figure. Even if official numbers remain conservative, the launch performance is already exceptional by any metric. A key enabler is BYD’s second-generation Blade Battery. The updated architecture improves charging speed, thermal management, and structural safety. With BYD’s in-house control of batteries, motors, and semiconductors, the company can compress costs while pushing performance forward. This tight integration remains one of its biggest competitive advantages in a crowded EV market. VYD View the 3 images of this gallery on the original article The BYD SurgeBYD’s trajectory now resembles a surge rather than a gradual climb. A global fuel crunch has accelerated the shift to electrification, and BYD is scaling aggressively to meet that demand. The irony is that its biggest bottleneck is no longer market acceptance but production capacity, as factories race to keep up with incoming orders. The competitive landscape is shifting quickly. BYD has already moved past Tesla in EV volume and is increasingly challenging legacy automakers like Ford in total sales. With improving engineering quality and growing international confidence, the brand is closing the gap to traditional leaders. If momentum holds and supply constraints ease, BYD’s push toward the very top of the global auto industry looks less like a possibility and more like an inevitability. Tesla Cybertruck Recalled Again for Wheel Stud Issue That Could Lead to Loss of Control
Wheel Studs May SeparateTesla has recalled 173 2024-2026 Cybertruck vehicles equipped with 18-inch steel wheels (around 5% of Cybertruck production) for a potential issue with its wheel studs. According to the NHTSA recall, the brake rotor stud holes could develop cracks, which allow the stud to separate from the wheel hub. This increases the risk of a crash. Tesla If owners continue to use their vehicle on rougher roads or subject the studs to higher cornering forces, the stud could even separate from the hub. Before losing control of the vehicle, owners may notice vibrations and noise from inside the cabin that could signal a cracked stud hole. Recall Details Tesla As with all recalls in the United States, Tesla Service will rectify the issue free of charge. Cybertruck owners impacted by the issue will receive new front and rear brake rotors, hubs, and lug nuts. If your Cybertruck is affected, Tesla will send out a notification letter by June 20, 2026. Owners may also contact Tesla at 1-877-798-3752, and provide the recall number SB-26-33-003. Tesla has not discovered any occurrences of separated studs or lugs in the field in during testing, but decided to voluntarily recall the affected vehicles out of an abundance of caution. Cybertruck Recalls This wheel hub issue is far from the first recall that has impacted the Cybertruck. Tesla's controversial pickup truck was recently recalled because the off-road light bar was not glued down well enough. That wasn't even the first glue-related Cybertruck recall, as other body parts were also detaching earlier in the year. And though it wasn't an official recall, it's hard to forget that Tesla had to temporarily stop shipping the Cybertruck with its futuristic wheel covers because they were eating into the tires. These issues could partially explain why Cybertruck deliveries have not lived up to the vehicles lofty pre-reveal expectations. View the full article

BMW Could Hand the Next X3 M to Alpina
Still no X3 MIt took a while for BMW to develop a fully-fledged M version of the X3, but it finally arrived in 2019. The third-generation G01 BMW X3 received M and M Competition models, and was even given a special internal code of F97. Its engine would later be used in the first release of the G80 M3 and M3 Competition, so the high-performance sedan owes a lot to the X3 M. When it was time to retire the previous model for the current G45 X3, we expected a new generation of the hot crossover. But nearly two years have passed since its introduction, and there's still no sign of a second-generation X3 M. Currently, there's the M50, and while its 3.0-liter turbo straight-six puts out 393 hp and 428 lb-ft, it's still quite far away from the full-on M model's 473 hp and 443 lb-ft figure, let alone the Competition's 503 hp output. The question now is, will there be a G45-based X3 M down the line? BMW An Interesting Trademark FilingWhile skimming through trademark databases, we came across a fairly recent filing from BMW that caught our attention. However, it wasn't 'X3 M' that we saw that the German automaker filed for registration. Instead, we saw the name XB3, indicating that Alpina might build the most powerful version of the X3. Those familiar with Alpina's naming conventions would've broken that down by now, with X indicating a crossover model, B standing for benzine (gas/petrol), and 3 for, well, the X3. Now that Alpina is under BMW's wing, it's possible that the mothership is exploring the possibility of passing the performance crossovers to the newly acquired company. Do note that there was also a filing for XB8, the likely successor of the slow-selling and controversial XM. It also follows Alpina's naming structure, which is why we're inclined to believe that the XB3 could effectively become the M version of the current X3. World Intellectual Property Office Alpina Made a Hot X3 BeforeIt never made it to the U.S, but Alpina had its own take for a fast X3 for the prior two generations. It was called the XD3, and as you might have guessed, the D stood for diesel. The most recent model was powered by the Euro-market-only 3.0-liter quad-turbo diesel. That engine was good for 383 hp and 568 lb-ft, making it far more potent than the twin-turbo X3 M40d from the same era. Considering that the previous-gen X3 was never really designed to accommodate a quad-turbo engine, it's quite impressive that Alpina made it work, at least for left-hand drive markets. With that in mind, the possible XB3 model won't be the company's first foray into building a potent X3. The only difference now is that this could be the first gas/petrol-powered X3 the company upgrades. If so, we're expecting at least 400 hp, since the current M50 is close to that number. Interesting times, indeed, but we're hoping BMW doesn't fully turn Alpina into its performance-crossover division. Drew Phillips View the full article

Rivian Hasn’t Made a Profit—but Paid Its CEO $403 Million
Auto industry CEOs are traditionally among the best paid business executives in the world, but there are significant differences between the pay packages US automakers provide to their bosses. Last year, America’s biggest automakers paid their CEOs in the tens of millions of dollars each, with General Motors’ Mary Barra earning $29.9 million and Ford’s Jim Farley bringing home $27.5 million. As for Stellantis, its new CEO Antonio Filosa received a total compensation package of €5.4 million (approximately $6.3 million), although it’s worth noting that the pay covered only half a year of work as he started in June. But compared to the CEO of Rivian, Detroit Three CEOs made peanuts last year. RJ Scaringe, who founded the EV startup in 2009, earned a total of $403 million for his work at the electric-truck maker in 2025. That’s about 13 times more than the next best-paid automotive CEO in the US, Mary Barra. RJ Scaringe Got an Elon Musk-Style Pay Deal Phillip Faraone/Getty Images According to an April 27 SEC filing cited by the Financial Times, Scaringe received $373 million in stock options and $26.6 million in stock awards as part of a deal agreed by Rivian’s board last year. Those sums were in addition to his yearly salary of $1.1 million and $1 million bonus. Scaringe’s 2025 pay package saw a massive increase over the two previous years, when he made $14.9 million (2024) and $14.3 million (2023). In 2026, his base salary is set to double to $2 million and his maximum bonus will reach $1.7 million, according to the filing. But why is RJ Scaringe making so much more money than the CEOs of much bigger automakers that have been around for more than 100 years? It all comes down to the company hitting stock price and financial targets, as those bonuses were tied to company achievements. Interestingly, RJ Scaringe could end up making much more in the coming years after Rivian’s board in November 2025 approved a package that could be worth as much as $4.6 billion over the next decade if the chief executive hits a series of ambitious stock price and financial goals. As FT points out, this system reminds of that used by Tesla, which has given its CEO Elon Musk a potential $1 trillion pay deal last year tied to seemingly unrealistic goals such as increasing the group’s valuation six times and boosting earnings 24-fold. Midsize R2 Electric SUV Is Expected to Take Rivian to the Next Level Rivian As for Scaringe’s pay package, Rivian’s directors justified it by saying it was “entirely at-risk” and the shares would only be awarded after significant price and financial improvements would be achieved; those indicators include operating income and cash flow. To get the pay package, Rivian's valuation would have to grow by $153 billion compared to its current market cap, the directors said. Rivian’s current valuation is $21 billion, down 86 percent since the company’s initial public offering in 2021. The EV maker has been losing money for its entire existence, ending 2025 with a net loss of 3.6 billion despite selling 42,000 R1T pickups and R1S SUVs last year. Rivian is hoping that the upcoming launch of its new mass-market R2 midsize SUV, which entered production last week at the company’s plant in Normal, Illinois, will help it reverse years of multibillion-dollar losses. The company also expects to make money by selling its software and autonomous systems to other companies, following a $5.8 billion software and electrics deal with Volkswagen last year. Additionally, the EV maker relies on a $1.25 billion investment from Uber, which agreed to buy up to 50,000 R2 EVs by 2030. As part of the deal, Rivian has to turn the vehicles into autonomous, unsupervised robotaxis. View the full article

Maserati Turns 100—and It’s Celebrating in a Big Way
Road Racing HeritageOnly a few automotive brands still left in existence can claim that they've reached 100 years in the business. Even fewer are able to reach this milestone and also tout a true racing heritage backed up by multiple wins spanning decades and legendary drivers. Maserati's story hasn't been an easy one, going through a lot more downs than ups, but here they are 100 years later, still alive and kicking. With this major achievement reached, 2026 is set to be a very special year for the brand. The automotive group giant announced that "every Maserati event around the world in 2026 - from sporting events to concours d’elegance, from product presentations to cultural initiatives - will turn this special milestone into a manifesto of identity and pride shared by Trident enthusiasts worldwide." To further amplify the celebrations, there will also be a commemorative marketing campaign. Where the tagline is "100 Years of The Trident," further enhancing the messaging is that RIDE in the word Trident will be in bold letters, to evoke the refined yet sporty driving experience that has always distinguished every Maserati. The Ministry of Enterprises of Italy is also adding to the festivities by releasing a postage stamp that is dedicated to the Trident’s centenary and to Maserati's global reach in 70 markets, which the ministry recognizes as an expression of Italian excellence. Santo Facili, Maserati's COO, says that the Trident embodies the most authentic soul of Maserati. Maserati View the 2 images of this gallery on the original article Born on the RacetrackFacili also points out that this soul was born on the racetrack back in 1926, where the brand also secured its first race win during the gruelling Targa Florio. The logo was conceptualized as early as 1925, but took on full form a year later. It was designed by Mario Maserati, the only brother of a member of the Maserati clan who wasn't directly involved in the car business. His first logo sketch is currently preserved in the Maserati archives in Modena. It was first displayed on the Tipo 26 race car, the car with which Alfieri Maserati entered the Targa Florio, taking first place in the 1500 cc class. It was the first in a long series of successes, including two consecutive editions of the Indianapolis 500 in 1939 and 1940, four consecutive victories at the Targa Florio in 1937, 1938, 1939, and 1940, nine Formula 1 wins, and the 1957 Formula 1 World Championship with Juan Manuel Fangio. Chevrolet Blazer EV Will Get Access to Tesla Superchargers
Unified Charging SystemOne of the most annoying parts of EV ownership has been the different charging port standards. Over the years, each brand has claimed its technology is the best option, but it only leads to confusion and frustration for owners. Some charging stations would only support a specific charging port, which might not be compatible with some EVs. In a bid to streamline charging for EV owners, brands have begun switching to a single charging port option, making it much easier for everyone to charge at most stations. Chevrolet GM Going NACSGM announced earlier this year that part of its new EV strategy is to equip all 2026 model-year cars with the North American Charging Standard (NACS) charging port. A new announcement confirms that the recently announced 2027 Blazer EV will also include the NACS port. The Blazer EV is following in the footsteps of the Bolt EV, but officially, the first GM product featuring NACS is the 2026 Cadillac Optiq. Tesla's the biggest reason NACS is becoming the new industry standard, thanks to the sheer number of Supercharger stations across the nation. This should allow most EV owners to charge without hassle. GM does say, though, that new owners will not lose access to existing chargers that use the old CCS1 connector, as they will be providing a charging adaptor. GM says the goal is to simplify the customer experience while expanding access to more reliable charging. New Blazer owners will now have easier access to one of the biggest and broadest-reaching charging networks in America, thanks to the NACS integration, while continuing to have the flexibility to use older charging stations with the adaptor, making it easier to plan trips and go on long-distance journeys. Chevrolet Bigger ImplicationsNACS was originally a Tesla-developed and patented charging technology; it was eventually opened to others and has quickly become the go-to charging port layout for most North American EVs. GM's quick adaptation of NACS shows that the market as a whole is leaning towards NACS as the industry standard for public charging stations. Most brands, including Hyundai, Nissan, and Audi, have already shifted to NACS as early as 2025. Apart from GM, the likes of Toyota and other automotive brands have stated that NACS integration will begin with cars made in 2026. View the full article

Kia’s First Pickup Is Getting Left Behind by Ford and Toyota
Kia has found success in multiple vehicle segments. From cheap sedans to near-premium midsize SUVs, the company’s brave design choices and diverse powertrain lineup have seen sales surge. So, it’s especially disappointing that the brand’s first pickup, the Tasman, has been unable to achieve the same level of success as other Kias. It marks a rare misstep for the otherwise thriving Korean marque. In the latest sales results out of Australia—where midsize pickups like the Toyota HiLux and Ford Ranger are immensely popular—the Tasman is falling far short of its sales target. Tasman’s March Sales Were Dismal Kia Kia originally hoped to sell 20,000 Tasman pickups in Australia annually. In March, only 399 Tasmans were sold Down Under, far below the monthly target and most competitors; the HiLux and Ranger moved over 4,000 units each in the same month. Other pickups like the Isuzu D-Max and Mitsubishi Triton were also well ahead of the Tasman. Many observers have pointed to the Tasman’s unorthodox design as a reason for its poor initial sales. However, in December last year, Kia denied suggestions that it would fast-track a redesign of the pickup. Kia Australia CEO, Damien Meredith, says he knows where the company needs to focus to get Tasman sales up. “Lifestyle [sales] we’ve done very, very well and that’s probably been the Kia owner, the one who’s loyal to the product,” said Meredith to Carsales. “What we need to do is improve fleet, we need to improve our [agricultural] performance and we need to improve our provincial performance. Selling cars to people – not farmers – in provincial areas.” Dennis Piccoli, Kia Australia COO, said that cracking the fleet market is tough, as “existing brands that are out there are pretty well entrenched”. What It Means Kia For now, many Australians needing a no-frills, workhorse pickup are still turning to traditional, trusted nameplates. These cheaper pickups prioritize capability, reliability, and value, and it’s this area where the Tasman has so far failed to resonate with buyers. In the U.S., we’ve seen a similar level of loyalty for more established truck brands. Take Ford and Hyundai, for instance. Even though they entered the compact pickup segment at a similar time with the Maverick and Santa Cruz, the Ford has been comprehensively outselling the Hyundai for a while now. Like Hyundai, Kia is relatively new to the pickup space, so this trend potentially spells trouble for Kia’s upcoming body-on-frame midsize pickup. It may struggle to match the Toyota Tacoma on the sales charts, just as the Tasman is battling to compete with established truck rivals. In the pickup segment, no matter how accomplished your product may be, buyers tend to stick with what they know and trust. Earning that respect could take Kia years. View the full article
