  1. Ford almost went three weeks without seeing its name appear on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's recall list for 2026, but today, it announced three at once, catapulting it to the top of the leaderboard as the most recalled automaker in the country to date, overtaking Rivian on the way. All three recalls raise the same concern of a fire risk and are attributed to an engine block heater that may short-circuit, with one recall for equipment (impacting 2,633 devices sold as accessory parts for certain 2013-2019 Ford and Lincoln vehicles equipped with 2.0-liter engines) and the other two affecting a total of 119,075 vehicles from 2013 to 2024. Which Vehicles Are Named in Ford's New Recalls and Why Kristen Brown/Autoblog The first recall concerns the Ford Focus and Ford Escape, along with the Lincoln MKC, while the second recall adds the Explorer to the list. Affected model years are listed below: 2013-2018 Ford Focus2013-2019 Ford Escape2015-2016 Lincoln MKC2019 & 2024 Ford ExplorerAccording to the NHTSA, affected vehicles' engine block heaters may develop a coolant leak through their element pins. This could result in a resistive short circuit while the engine block heater system is plugged in, and that increases the risk of an underhood fire. The problem has been traced to solder joints that may develop cracks around the element base. This lets the coolant seep into the block heater-to-cord interface, and when this coolant evaporates, electrically conductive salt deposits remain. As these accumulate over time, they can form a salt bridge or corrode electrical connections, and either outcome can create an electrical path to ground, ultimately leading to a resistive short circuit. Numerous Signs of Failure, But Ford Owners Must Wait for a Fix Ford Fortunately, this potentially fiery problem exhibits warning signs, with the NHTSA saying that customers may notice coolant spots under the vehicles, a loss of cabin heat, an overheating engine, or a low coolant warning indicator. In extreme cases, a burning odor or even smoke may become apparent. The good news is that owners of affected vehicles haven't been advised to park outside, just to refrain from plugging in their engine block heaters until a solution is provided. Ford first became aware of the issue more than a year ago, on January 16, 2025, but it is far from ready to provide a remedy. Related: Ford Built a New GT500, Then Refused to Call It One Customer VINs are searchable on nhtsa.gov, but interim owner notifications are only planned to go out from February 9-13, and remedy notifications are only expected to begin on April 13. With Ford nearly doubling the previous record number of recalls in 2025, the new year is already off to a bad start, but it's reassuring to see that the Blue Oval is constantly monitoring any issues its cars develop and works diligently to provide solutions as quickly as possible. 2. There Are Still Affordable CarsWith average new-car prices still hovering well above $50,000, genuinely affordable new vehicles have become harder to find. Still, a handful of automakers continue to offer smart, value-packed cars and crossovers that keep pricing within reach without feeling stripped bare. Below are the 10 most affordable new cars in America today, ranked not just by price, but by what buyers actually get for their money. Hyundai Venue ($20,550)Pro: Lowest starting price in Hyundai’s lineupCon: Old. Limited power and available features Hyundai Hyundai’s Venue is the most affordable new vehicle from a major automaker in the U.S., making it a frequent entry point for budget-focused shoppers. This subcompact crossover is powered by a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine producing 121 horsepower, paired with a continuously variable transmission and standard front-wheel drive. Fuel economy remains competitive for the segment, rated at 29 mpg city and 33 mpg highway. While the Venue continues to excel as a city-friendly SUV thanks to its compact size, easy maneuverability, and standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, it’s also starting to feel long in the tooth. The powertrain and interior layout have seen few meaningful updates in recent years, and acceleration and rear-seat space remain limited. Still, for first-time buyers, urban commuters, or anyone searching for the most affordable new SUV under $21,000, the Hyundai Venue remains a practical and accessible option. Chevrolet Trax ($21,700)Pro: Spacious interior for the priceCon: No all-wheel-drive option The redesigned Chevrolet Trax punches well above its price point, powered by a 1.2-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine producing 137 horsepower and offering noticeably better low-end torque than many rivals. Inside, the Trax impresses with one of the roomiest cabins in the subcompact SUV segment, along with a modern infotainment system featuring a large touchscreen and crisp graphics even in base trims. As much as some buyers may want all-wheel drive, no AWD option is available on the Trax, and performance is tuned more for efficiency than excitement. Even so, for shoppers who value interior space, up-to-date tech, and strong overall value, the Trax delivers a modern crossover feel without creeping into higher price brackets. Hyundai Elantra ($22,625)Pro: Excellent fuel economyCon: Conservative driving dynamics Hyundai The Hyundai Elantra continues to be one of the strongest compact sedans for budget-minded shoppers. Its 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine produces 147 horsepower and delivers up to 41 mpg on the highway, making it one of the most fuel-efficient gas-only sedans in its class. Hyundai also includes a generous suite of standard safety features, such as forward collision warning and lane-keeping assist. The Elantra isn’t the most exciting drive around. It’s not outright slow, but acceleration can feel laggy, especially when quick bursts of power are needed, with the driving experience clearly tuned for comfort rather than engagement. Even so, it remains a standout choice for commuters who value efficiency, warranty coverage, and modern styling over driving thrills. Kia K4 ($22,290)Pro: Sharp design and modern techCon: New model with limited track record Kia The all-new Kia K4 replaces the long-running Forte, a nameplate many shoppers will miss, and immediately positions itself as one of the most compelling budget sedans on the market. Standard power comes from a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, while available turbocharged options bring added performance on higher trims. Inside, the K4 impresses with a sleek dashboard design and a digital-forward layout that feels unusually modern for the segment. For buyers who want something fresh, stylish, and well-equipped without paying a premium, the K4 is a strong contender, even if its long-term reliability remains to be proven. Nissan Kicks ($22,430)Pro: Excellent city fuel economyCon: No AWD or electrified options Nissan The Nissan Kicks focuses on efficiency and simplicity, powered by a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine producing 122 horsepower and delivering strong fuel economy with a relaxed, easygoing driving experience. It’s front-wheel drive only and best suited for urban and suburban use, where its compact size and light controls work in its favor. Acceleration is leisurely, and while we wish Nissan offered an all-wheel-drive option or an electrified hybrid variant, the Kicks makes up for it with a surprisingly roomy interior and a user-friendly infotainment system. For buyers prioritizing low running costs and a higher seating position over outright performance, it remains a practical and affordable choice. Toyota Corolla ($22,925)Pro: Legendary reliabilityCon: Legendary lack of excitement Toyota The Toyota Corolla remains a benchmark for affordable transportation. Its 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine produces 169 horsepower, giving it more punch than many rivals while still delivering excellent fuel economy. Toyota’s reputation for long-term durability continues to make the Corolla a safe and sensible buy. That legendary reliability, however, comes with an equally legendary lack of excitement. The interior design is conservative, and the driving experience is firmly competent rather than engaging, but the Corolla’s dependability, strong resale value, and low ownership costs still make it one of the smartest choices for long-term ownership. Chevrolet Trailblazer ($23,300)Pro: Available all-wheel driveCon: Price climbs quickly with options Chevrolet The Chevrolet Trailblazer offers something rare at this price point: available all-wheel drive, a feature many budget-friendly crossovers simply don’t offer. Buyers can choose between two turbocharged three-cylinder engines, with the larger 1.3-liter option producing 155 horsepower, and its boxy styling and elevated ride height give it a more traditional SUV look and feel despite its compact size. That said, value-conscious shoppers should note that the Chevrolet Trax is both more affordable and spacious, which complicates the Trailblazer’s positioning. Its saving grace is the aforementioned all-wheel drive, but once optioned, Trailblazer pricing can climb quickly into higher territory, making careful trim selection essential for buyers trying to stay within a tight budget. Kia Seltos ($23,790)Pro: Available turbocharged powerCon: Base engine feels underpowered K The Kia Seltos sells big for the brand as it bridges the gap between subcompact and compact SUVs, offering more interior room and presence than many entry-level crossovers. Standard power comes from a 2.0-liter engine, while an available turbocharged option significantly improves performance and responsiveness. Bold styling, a comfortable cabin, and available all-wheel drive help the Seltos stand out in a crowded segment. While the standard engine isn’t slow in any absolute sense, acceleration can feel sluggish, especially during highway merges or quick passing maneuvers. Even so, the Seltos remains an appealing choice for buyers who want extra space, available AWD, and modern features without stepping into a much higher price bracket. Volkswagen Jetta ($23,995)Pro: Strong turbocharged engineCon: Interior materials feel basic John Beltz Snyder The Volkswagen Jetta delivers a more European driving feel than many competitors, powered by a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine producing 158 horsepower and offering smooth, responsive acceleration. The cabin design is minimalist but functional, and the Jetta excels in ride quality and long-distance highway comfort. Despite offering a solid list of standard features, sales of Volkswagen’s last remaining sedan haven’t been particularly strong, which could spell trouble for the Jetta nameplate in the long term. For shoppers, however, that uncertainty may translate into aggressive incentives and stronger deals, making the Jetta an appealing option for drivers who value refinement and driving dynamics at a potentially discounted price. Mazda3 — Starting at $24,550Pro: Upscale interior feelCon: Smaller rear seat and trunk The Mazda3 may sit at the top of this affordability list, but it offers near-luxury refinement for the money. Its 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine produces 191 horsepower, making it one of the most engaging cars in this segment. Mazda’s focus on premium materials and sharp handling sets the Mazda3 apart. While rear-seat space is limited, buyers who prioritize driving enjoyment and interior quality will find it worth the extra cost. While the sub-20K brand new car no longer exists, there are still many options below 25K, and many are better equipped, safer, and more refined than ever. The key is knowing where true value lives before prices start climbing fast. Disclaimer: Every vehicle on this list starts below $25,000 and continues into the 2026 model year. We’ve excluded discontinued nameplates and outgoing 2025-only models to focus on cars shoppers can actually buy new today, without chasing leftover inventory or limited-time clearances. The prices mentioned also exclude the mandatory destination charges, which vary per brand. View the full article
  3. Buttons Aren’t Dead, They’re Just SelectiveNot too long ago, carmakers seemed determined to see who could strip away the most buttons from their interiors. As touchscreens took over and dashboards got sleeker, physical controls quietly disappeared (looking at you, Mercedes-Benz), hidden in menus or dropped entirely. Even simple tasks started to demand a look away from the road. But not every brand followed that trend. Hyundai vowed to keep physical controls for the features that matter most, and Volkswagen recently admitted it went too far, now bringing real buttons back to its next wave of vehicles, like the ID. Polo. Kia is now firmly in that group, holding on to tactile controls even as it adds more digital tech throughout the cabin. Volkswagen Kia’s Interior Boss Explains the ThinkingAccording to an Autocar interview, Kia interior design chief Jochen Paesen says the brand never fully abandoned buttons in the first place. He notes that certain functions need to be found instantly, without mistakes, which is why physical switchgear remains for key systems. Kia’s next interiors will lean further into digital features, but Paesen points out that adding more tech doesn’t always make things better. He notes that while Chinese rivals are moving fast and trying new ideas, what matters most is knowing when to hold back and focus on what’s actually useful. Paesen says Kia’s global reach shapes its approach. The company studies markets around the world, and the feedback is clear: drivers might have different comfort levels with tech, but their needs behind the wheel are mostly the same. If you have to dig through menus just to use a basic feature, that solution doesn’t work for anyone. Instead of chasing the latest gimmick, Kia wants technology to make things simpler, not more complicated. The aim is for the car to help you out, not become something you have to figure out every time you drive. Kia Progress Is Good, but Usability Still WinsKia’s approach is practical. Bigger screens and smarter software are great, but not if they make the car harder to use. Physical buttons for the basics still make sense, and it’s not just about nostalgia. There is also a safety angle that cannot be ignored. Functions drivers use repeatedly, like temperature, fan speed, or volume, should be adjustable without taking their eyes off the road. Muscle memory matters, and flat glass panels do not offer that kind of tactility. As car interiors change, Kia looks more focused on refining what works than reinventing things just to stand out. Screens will keep growing, software will keep improving, but the basics will stay within easy reach. In a market chasing minimalism and newness, that kind of balance might be the smartest move yet. 5. 2026 is a massive year for the Formula One world, with brand-new regulations, new participants like Ford, Cadillac, and Audi, and a new World Drivers' Champion defending his crown in McLaren's Lando Norris. It's also the first year in which Aston Martin will use a power unit crafted by Honda, not Mercedes, and this new tie-up may lead to a jointly-developed road car. According to Road & Track, Aston Martin executive chairman Lawrence Stroll said that while there are currently no plans to collaborate with Honda on a road car, he is "very open" to the idea. Better yet, his sentiments were echoed by Honda president Toshihiro Mibe, who said that such a thing was "entirely possible." A Valkyrie Successor or a New NSX? Either Is Plausible Supercar Ron View the 2 images of this gallery on the original article For now and the foreseeable future, Aston Martin and Honda's focus is purely on finding success in Formula 1, but Mibe said that "there will be value" in applying what the works team learns in a successful F1 project "to production cars." Aston Martin has showed a willingness to invest in relatively accessible yet otherworldly performance with the creation of the Valkyrie, while Honda would surely be proud to have a new halo to stand behind after the second-gen NSX was axed, and these comments indicate that a jointly-developed hypercar influenced by F1 technology excites Honda. Keeping in mind that the first-gen NSX had input from legendary F1 champion Ayrton Senna, an F1-influenced collaboration seems inspired. Stroll seems enthused by the possibility, too. Related: Red Bull's RB17 Hypercar Makes the Aston Martin Valkyrie Look and Sound Tame "These are two great companies getting together in Aston Martin and Honda," said Stroll, adding, "It's safe to say that [our F1 works team project] is the beginning of our relationship. We actually at this point have not discussed a production car or hypercar or a supercar together, [but] there is absolutely no reason why we can't do so going forward." Aston Martin Has Had Japanese DNA Before Aston Martin If and when the time comes for the pair to work together on a street-legal vehicle, one can't help but imagine that a road car with the effortless grace of the British brand combined with the technical knowhow of the Japanese company would be both stylish and innovative, but this isn't Aston Martin's first tie-up with a Japanese brand, and its last was neither of those things. In 2011, Aston Martin began selling the Cygnet, a city runabout car based on the diminutive Toyota iQ with an annual sales target of 4,000. Initially only offered to existing Aston Martin owners, the Cygnet cost roughly three times as much as the iQ, despite having identical on-paper performance and possibly even worse real-world acceleration, thanks to the added weight of fancy leather and aluminum trimmings. Low demand (less than 600 were sold across Europe) caused it to cease production after just two years. We doubt Aston Martin would make the same mistake twice, a supercar or hypercar would be far more useful as a marketing tool, and we need to see how fruitful its Honda tie-up is first, but it's worth pondering. After all, nobody could have predicted an Aston-badged Toyota before it happened, but it did. View the full article
  6. Kuhl's Cool BuildsThe 2026 Tokyo Auto Salon really lived up to the name and hype that comes with every annual show. We've extensively covered most of the headliner showcars and displays, including Kuhl Racing. This Japanese company showed off unique builds like the Blocked Iron Build Land Cruiser 250 and the GR86 Outroad. However, another Kuhl GR86 build was featured (and kind of flew under the radar) alongside the other cars at the 2026 Tokyo Auto Salon that we missed. This one was also based on a GR86 and drew inspiration from the Outroad, but was executed in a very different way. Same Same But Different?Kuhl just introduced another GR86 wide-body kit called the Spec D – a blend of "full-scale racing aero parts for winning drift competitions." The Outroad influence is immediately obvious in the body's color, which matches the Military Mud shade. Another thing both the Spec D and Outroad share is the front and rear bumper, and the steel bumper protector. The differences begin with the wide front and rear fenders, which give the GR86 Spec D a lower, sportier stance. Another major difference is the large rear wing perched on the trunk lid of the Spec D. Kuhl designed the rear wing as a three-stage spoiler, showing off the top, middle, and lower fins. In fact, the base of the wing is the same duck tail used in the Outroad, with two additional fins added. The ducted fenders were designed as aero parts to aid performance during drifting competitions; the total width on each side has been increased by 2.4 inches. Plate-shaped diffusers (or front side undercannards) were attached to the lower ends of the bumper to give the impression of a wide, low, sporty look. Other almost-overlooked design elements of the Kuhl Racing Spec D are the rear and side window louvers, which serve an aerodynamic purpose, too. Additional Spec D Looks and PerformanceAn interesting thing about the Spec D is the suspension system; Kuhl went with an Air-Force Super Performance Kit air suspension. This lowers the car to the point where it is almost quite literally touching the ground. The rims are newly designed 19-inch KRONE05, Kuhl's latest addition to their rim catalog. The brakes for the Spec D GR86 are also made by Kuhl, with forged monoblock calipers with six pistons in the front and four pistons in the rear, and the interior features Bride Zeta IV bucket seats with gold Kuhl stitching on the headrest. As an exercise in design and function, the Kuhl Racing GR86 Spec D knocks it out of the park. That Military Mud color, with the added sharp and angular panels, makes it look almost "Gundam-like" in design. View the 3 images of this gallery on the original article View the full article
  7. An Update Already?Yes, that early. The A5 and Q5 just had their first full model year in 2025, but the 2026 models are already bringing a host of welcome changes. So for those shopping around for either of these cars, it might be a good time to wait for these to come out, or haggle with your nearest dealer for a better deal. Good luck with that. So, what to expect from the new(er) A5 and Q5? Well, there's been a lot of buzz surrounding the return of some buttons, but there's more to it than a couple more physical controls. It's good news, but so is the addition of a few more features and options, as well as tweaks to the infotainment. Audi Here's What's NewWe'll get to the buttons first. The A5 and Q5 get a new steering wheel with, drumroll please, a scroll wheel instead of a haptic pad. Also, one no longer needs to dig through menus to get to the parking assists, as there's a dedicated button for that now. That's pretty much the extent of it, and most controls are still done via the touchscreen. Also, the window switches are still haptic pads. For the infotainment, the new interface features fewer lists to simplify the user experience. Also, the Virtual Cockpit gets a few tweaks here and there that allow for more personalization. Part of the 2026 changes also includes the expanded Audi drive select modes with a true Individual setting. Audi says the advanced driver-assist features have some improvements as well. The same goes for the virtual assistant, plus the addition of the 'Experience Worlds' cabin mood system. Experience Worlds includes Activating, Relaxing, and Harmonizing modes, and the company adds that more will be added soon, likely via over-the-air updates. Audi The S Models Get Upgrades, TooThe new features worth pointing out in the 2026 S5 and SQ5 are Dynamic Plus Mode and Drive Select Assistant. Dynamic Plus Mode gives the rear differential more free rein and better rotation around the bends. Audi claims that this mode allows for more oversteer thanks to brake torque vectoring and an optimized stability control system. Meanwhile, the Drive Select Assistant is a bit like an adaptive driving mode. It can tense up or relax the chassis and throttle response on the fly, depending on conditions and input from the driver. This feature is only fitted on the Prestige version of the S5 and SQ5, but oddly enough, it's also in the Q5 Prestige. Audi Coming Soon to ShowroomsAudi has confirmed that the 2026 models will reach dealers sometime during the first quarter of the year. There isn't an exact date just yet, but it should be sooner rather than later. Besides, Audi needs 2026 to be a strong year give last year's sales performance. As for pricing, the 2026 A5 starts at $50,200, while the Q5 carries a base price of $52,800. Audi Audi View the 17 images of this gallery on the original article View the full article
  8. In the winter wonderland that is snowy Sweden at this time of the year, the 2027 Mercedes-Benz C-Class with EQ Technology has been spotted. That's a roundabout way of describing the electric C-Class, but it's better than EQC, and the first electric C-Class needs to be impressive if it is to have a fighting chance in its battle with the upcoming BMW i3. Mercedes has learned that an EV-exclusive design is ineffective when the result is an amorphous blob, like the ill-fated EQS, but instead of making its electric vehicles masquerade as combustion cars, Mercedes is making the two types meet in the middle, and this C-Class EV prototype gives us a preview of what to expect. New Styling for the Electric C-Class Sedan SH Proshots/Autoblog View the 2 images of this gallery on the original article Like the forthcoming E-Class, the new C-Class EV will signal a return to elegance, with sharper edges. But it will also lean into trends; although this prototype is fully covered in camouflage, a teaser of the new C-Class was shared by Stuttgart last year, and it showed an illuminated grille with an oversized three-pointed star in the center surrounded by hundreds of square, pixel-like lights. The wheels on this development mule are also new, and to this writer's eyes, look like they could have been borrowed from Kia. Related: Mercedes-AMG's Answer to the BMW X3 M50 Is Almost Ready Around the glasshouse, we see Merc's traditional silver accenting, and at the back, we see some major departures from tradition, with the sedan losing its three-box shape and gaining what appears to be a liftback tailgate. The design gives the C-Class a pert rear end, to which the snow of the Arctic Circle is closely adhering. Despite this, the LED lighting beneath shines through, revealing a similar look to the new 2026 CLA, and we'll see LED tri-element stars at both ends of the car. The CLA baby brother is a rather good-looking vehicle, and we hope the C-Class is just as handsome once the vinyl is removed. But what matters most is what we can't see in these images. What to Expect from the First Electric C-Class SH Proshots/Autoblog View the 2 images of this gallery on the original article The teaser referenced earlier also gave us a taste of the C-Class with EQ Technology's performance, promising 497 miles of range, thanks to its MB.EA architecture. The 800-volt platform will endow the C-Class EV with ultra-fast charging at up to 330kW, and its 94kWh battery pack will supply energy to either rear- or all-wheel-drive configurations, the latter with two motors. These higher trims will have around 480 horsepower, if not more, by the time the electric C-Class makes its debut later in 2026 for the 2027 model year. As with the CLA and the new GLC EQ, we can expect an expansive Hyperscreen in the cabin, and it will offer AI-powered features from both Google and Microsoft. We'll learn more as the camo comes off through the rest of the year, and hopefully, Mercedes will have what it takes to closely rival its Munich-based nemesis. View the full article

  12. A Milestone Year for the Three-Pointed StarMercedes-Benz is celebrating its 140th year, and as part of the likely festivities, the German marque is putting its energy into something really relevant: a major update to its flagship sedan. The W223 S-Class is getting a thorough refresh. Mercedes is, of course, still keeping some details under wraps, but CEO Ola Källenius has already given us a surprisingly open preview in a recent video ahead of the official launch. Mercedes is clear that this isn’t just a routine facelift. The S-Class is still the brand’s showcase for comfort, safety, and tech, and this update is meant to keep it at the top of its game for years to come. We already know there’s a new V8 and advanced autonomous driving in the works, but the preview video gives us a better sense of just how much is changing under the surface. What’s ChangingMercedes says over half the car has been changed or refined – about 2,700 parts in total. Some of these updates are easy to spot; others are tucked away. The S-Class keeps its familiar shape, but the details are sharper and more formal. The upright hood ornament is back, the grille has been tweaked for a stronger presence, and the lights front and rear have been updated, all while sticking to the S-Class’s understated style. Inside, it’s all about refining what already works. Mercedes says every trim surface has been reworked to push the S-Class’s quiet, tactile luxury even further. Ride comfort is still a top priority, with updates to the Airmatic air suspension aimed at smoothing out rough roads and long stretches. There’s also a new cloud-based suspension system that lets S-Class models share road data, so the car can get ready for bumps before you even feel them. On the tech side, this update is a big step. The new S-Class is the first to run fully on the Mercedes-Benz Operating System, or MB.OS. This is a complete overhaul of the car’s software, running everything from infotainment to rear-seat entertainment, over-the-air updates, and features Mercedes hasn’t even announced yet. The new S-Class will also benefit from the continued evolution of the brand's Pre-Safe and active safety systems, while Manufaktur Made to Measure will offer near-unlimited exterior color choices and expanded customization options, inside and out. Mercedes-Benz View the 3 images of this gallery on the original article Everything Will Be Revealed SoonWhile not mentioned in the video, the biggest surprise under the hood will be a new V8. Mercedes confirms the refreshed S-Class will get a flat-plane-crank V8, which is a big change for the flagship sedan. It points to a more performance-oriented character, but without turning the S-Class into a full-blown AMG. Autonomous driving is still a major focus. Mercedes says the updated S-Class is already hardware-ready for Level 4 autonomy, with pilot programs running in controlled settings. Widespread hands-off driving will depend on local rules, but it has been clear for a while that Mercedes is building the S-Class for real-world autonomy. We won’t for too long, as Mercedes has confirmed that the facelifted S-Class will debut on January 29, 2026. Market launches are expected to follow later in the year. With its hybrid powertrain and no manual gearbox, the all-new Honda Prelude isn’t exactly what fans of the coupe were hoping for, but it has still thrust the Prelude nameplate back into the spotlight. Driving all five previous generations of the Prelude reminds one of simpler times, and how fun these cars still are today. This brings us to an incredibly special 1983 Prelude, a second-generation model that belongs to Honda. Amazingly, this Prelude has never been sold and has covered under 400 miles. Ready to take a trip down memory lane? Pop-Up Headlights, Manual Gearbox, and Unassisted Steering 1983 Honda Prelude TFLclassics/YouTube View the 4 images of this gallery on the original article The folks at TFLclassics were lucky enough to get their hands on this piece of 1980s nostalgia. Finished in red and with black wheels, the wedge-like second-gen Prelude still looks good today, and those pop-up headlights will never get old. This particular example was manufactured in July 1982, making it one of the earlier second-gen models ever produced. TFLclassics/YouTube This one has a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine with dual carburetors. It produces just 100 horsepower and 109 lb-ft of torque in the U.S. specification, but since the car weighs less than a modern Miata, it’s not as slow as the figures suggest. The reviewer had high praise for the five-speed manual gearbox, which he described as very precise despite the longer throw. Heavy yet communicative steering is another trait of many cars from this era, in contrast to newer, electric power steering systems that are more effortless but not as talkative. The simplistic interior features clear gauges and controls that take a few seconds to figure out. There’s a lot of plastic, yet the second-gen Prelude doesn’t feel cheap, even over 40 years since this model rolled off the production line. Americans Loved The Second-Gen PreludeHonda sold 336,599 second-gen Preludes in the United States, making it by far the most popular generation of the car sold here. Later models were quicker and more advanced, but didn’t sell nearly as strongly. Here’s a look at U.S. sales of every Prelude generation. Generation Model Years U.S Sales First 1979-1982 171,829 Second 1983-1987 336,599 Third 1988-1991 160,909 Fourth 1992-1996 98,627 Fifth 1997-2001 58,118 The new Prelude hybrid is unlikely to sell as strongly as any previous Prelude in the United States, simply because two-door coupes have largely fallen out of favor here. 1983 Honda Prelude TFLclassics/YouTube View the 5 images of this gallery on the original article These days, neat second-gen Preludes are hard to find. Only five of them were sold on Bring A Trailer over the last year, with the most expensive one going for $16,500—and that was for a desirable JDM-spec Si model from 1987. Times change, and the Prelude brings with it modern safety standards, a sleek design, and way more tech than any predecessor. Yes, there's no manual, but Honda has at least tried to combine modern efficiency with old-school engagement via its S+ Shift system and its simulated gearshifts. There was also a chorus of dissent when Acura launched the modern Integra with its extra pair of doors, but this criticism does the car itself a disservice. 15. Manny Buginga will return to the Pro Modified ranks this weekend at the U.S. Street Nationals presented by M&M Transmission, the second of three races in the Drag Illustrated Winter Series presented by J&A Service. Buginga will be piloting his patented red ProCharger-powered Mustang named “Frank” at Bradenton Motorsports Park. Buginga, who won the N/T class at last year’s U.S. Street Nationals, is eager to rejoin one of drag racing’s most competitive classes – 80 cars attempted to qualify at the Snowbird Outlaw Nationals presented by Motion Raceworks, the first event of the Winter Series. “It’s a good little deal,” Buginga said. “It’s a lot of fun. I mean, it’s an honor to be there because these guys are the greatest of the great.” Buginga set the internet ablaze a couple months ago when he reset both the eighth-mile and quarter-mile records on 275 and 315 radials at Rockingham Dragway in North Carolina. He started by running a 3.481-second elapsed time in the eighth on 275’s, followed by a 5.682 in the quarter. He then came back and clicked off a 3.441 and 5.488 on the 315 radials. Although similar, the new Larry Jeffers-built Mustang Buginga will campaign in the Winter Series is not the same car he used to set those records. In addition, he is also reuniting with longtime collaborator Jamie Miller to do the tuning. The reunion has already paid immediate dividends during testing. For Buginga, the returns on performance have validated both the car and the renewed partnership with Miller. “Me and Jamie Miller got back together because we’ve been very successful together,” said Buginga. “Listen, when me and him get together and we’re on the same page, stuff just happens. I don’t know how, but it does. We put the car on slicks and in twelve runs, we went 3.582 at 209 mph right off the bat.” In addition to his own Pro Mod return, Buginga has recently taken on a mentorship role, working with NHRA Pro Stock driver Cory Reed as Reed expands into small-tire and radial competition. Reed is also competing at the Winter Series, driving another Buginga-owned Mustang in the True 10.5 class. The collaboration, which has already been on display at the Snowbirds, is focused on broadening Reed’s driving experience while simultaneously trying to win the $40,000 prize at each event. “What can I say? He likes the color red and he likes Mustangs,” Buginga joked. “As a mentor, I’m just trying to add some different flavor to his driving career. He likes the challenge. He’s doing very well. He’s a quick learner and very good listener, as well as a good driver. He’s good people and hopefully we can get him in the winner’s circle. That’s the goal for him racing under our umbrella – get him consistently in the winner’s circle.” With the U.S. Street Nationals quickly approaching, Buginga is realistic about the level of competition awaiting him in Bradenton, while also confident in his own driving ability in one of the toughest fields to qualify for in all of drag racing. “If we could just duplicate the 3.58 (from testing), I think that’ll probably put us in the top 15,” said Buginga. “I don’t think it’s going to be a top five car. I think they’re going to be stacked up like Pro Stock. The attitude going into this race is that just qualifying is an accomplishment. After that, every round is a final round. You’ve got to be on the tree, the tuner’s got to be on his game, and there’s zero room for error. That’s how you’re going to make it through.” The U.S. Street Nationals presented by M&M Transmission will take place January 22-25 at Bradenton Motorsports park. 16. The International Hot Rod Association (IHRA) today announced it has entered into a lease agreement for the Pulaski County Motorsports Park, the landmark venue long known to racers and fans as the Motor Mile Speedway, marking a major step in IHRA’s mission to revive grassroots motorsports and reinvest in legendary community tracks. “This track is part of the racing fabric of Virginia — and the kind of place where generations of families have made memories,” said Darryl Cuttell, Owner of IHRA. “Leasing Pulaski County Motorsports Park allows us to put racing back where it belongs: in the community, accessible to local teams, and exciting for fans.” First opened in 1952 as a dirt oval, the facility evolved into one of the region’s most recognizable racing destinations. The oval was later paved and developed into a 0.416-mile asphalt track, and the complex expanded over time to include a drag racing venue, helping establish Pulaski County as a true motorsport’s hub. Under IHRA’s lease, Pulaski County Motorsports Park will once again become a year-round heartbeat for competitive racing, special events, and community engagement — with immediate focus on restoring a consistent schedule that brings fans back through the gates and supports the local economy. Pulaski County Motorsports Park will serve as a cornerstone venue for the newly launched IHRA Stock Car Series, a national-level program designed to bring stock car racing back to its roots through cost-controlled competition and a racer-first approach. The 2026 IHRA Stock Car Series will open at Pulaski County Motorsports Park on March 21, with a second stop at the track on July 25. “Pulaski County is excited to welcome IHRA in such a big way to our community, and to partner with them at the Pulaski County Motorsports Park to bring world-class drag and oval track racing back to the New River Valley”, stated Jonathan Sweet, County Administrator. “We feel that IHRA is a premier professional racing organization, and their focus on an array of motorsports applications closely aligns with the County’s overall sports and entertainment vision, as well as shared emphasis on community-centric events.” Pulaski County Motorsports Park has hosted a wide range of touring series and major events over the decades, including nationally recognized appearances as recently as 2023. With renewed operations and a refreshed event strategy, IHRA intends to bring an expanded calendar that includes: · IHRA Stock Car Series weekends and regional racing programs · Additional motorsports disciplines and touring events · Family-friendly festivals, community nights, and sponsor-driven experiences designed to reintroduce the facility to new audiences IHRA emphasized that this lease is not simply about events on a calendar — it’s about rebuilding momentum around a facility that has long been a point of pride for Pulaski County and the New River Valley. The organization will work alongside local partners to support community involvement, create opportunities for local businesses, and ensure the fan experience matches the significance of the venue. “The motorsports park has been an important part of this community for decades, and I have felt that we had an obligation to do whatever we could to return it to its former glory since I arrived here,” said Tim Miller, Director of Sports & Entertainment for Pulaski County. “This partnership with the IHRA and the vision that Darryl Cuttell and his team have for the future of racing and this venue puts us in the best possible position to succeed.” This story was originally published on January 21, 2026. 17. There were plenty of takers earlier this month when Chinese automaker Geely offered journalists attending the Consumer Electronics Show a chance to drive some of its new vehicles. For now, at least, the only alternative would be to travel abroad since no domestic Chinese brands are today available in the U.S. Related: After Years of Rumors, Geely Confirms Plans to Enter the U.S. Market But that may change in the not-too-distant future. Chinese manufacturers have captured a 20% share of the Mexican market and, as part of a new trade deal announced last week, Canada initially will open its borders to 49,000 Chinese-made vehicles annually. Sandwiched in the middle, U.S. automakers have fought to keep the Chinese out, but they may not be able to keep the doors closed much longer, Pres. Donald Trump quoted as saying he’s open to “Let China come in” during a Detroit visit last week. More significantly, American motorists seem quite eager to learn more about the options posed by Chinese vehicles – considering their generally low price tags – at a time when affordability issues have priced millions of potential buyers out of the market. Growing Awareness BYD For manufacturers that have yet to sell a single vehicle in the U.S., Chinese automakers like BYD, Geely, Xiaomi and Great Wall have a surprisingly high level of awareness among American consumers, according to AutoPacific. Surveying 19,000 motorists expecting to buy a new vehicle in the next three years it found: More than half – 51% to be precise – said they’d consider Chinese vehicles, were they available. That’s up from 41% in the prior 2024 study;Awareness of Chinese brands has surged rapidly. The latest study found 43% saying they’re “somewhat familiar” with Chinese vehicles, while 22% said they were “very familiar,” a total of 65%, That’s up 12 points from the prior year;Asked which brands they were most interested in buying, 27% picked Huawei, 19% BYD, 16% Great Wall and Geely and Nio were each the choice of 13%.“There’s going to be even more awareness, buzz and consideration now that Canada is opening the door,” said Robbie DeGraff, manager of product and consumer insights for AutoPacific, Inc. Related: New Survey Exposes New Car Buyer Attitudes Toward Chinese Cars Booming Exports BYD The numbers suggest Chinese carmakers have the potential to duplicate the success they’re seeing in many other parts of the world. The country’s auto exports have jumped from 1 million to 7 million since 2019, according to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers. In Mexico, Chinese-made automobiles – including those sold under Western brand names – now account for one in five new vehicle sales. They haven’t been completely locked out of the U.S. market, but sales totaled around 74,000 in 2025, barely 0.5% of the new vehicle total. And they were all sold wearing Western badges, such as the Lincoln Nautilus and Buick Envision. The problem is that any price advantage Chinese products have has been more than offset by the tariffs first put in place by former Pres. Joe Biden and increased under Donald Trump. Gas-powered models like Nautilus face 27.5% duties, pure EVs like the Polestar 2 and Volvo EX30 face 102.5% tariffs. That has forced manufacturers to drop some models or, in the case of Volvo, move production of the EX30 from China to Ghent, Belgium. Pluses and Minuses Geely There are a number of reasons why Chinese vehicles are gaining traction so quickly, starting with low sticker prices. Consider that in Mexico, the BYD Dolphin Mini – a 5-door EV with a range of 190 miles – goes for MXN$358,000, about $21,000 – including a 16% value-added tax. The BYD Dolphin Surf exported to the European Union starts as low as 19,990 euros, or $22,977, depending upon the national market. In a handful of countries, the BYD Seagull EV starts just over its Chinese price of $11,000. Those are hard numbers to ignore, considering the average transaction price for a new vehicle in the U.S. topped $50,000 in December, according to Kelley Blue Book. Until a few years ago, critics said Chinese products weren’t worth any more, citing low quality and limited features. The latest generation of vehicles have reversed that image, winning kudos for their features – especially the technology in Chinese EVs. Even Ford CEO Jim Farley couldn’t contain his enthusiasm for the Xiaomi SU7. “I've been driving it for six months now, and I don't want to give it up,” he said in October 24 during an interview on the “Everything Electric” podcast. Related: Ford CEO Says Chinese Automakers Could “Put Us All Out of Business” On the downside, AutoPacific’s study found Americans still deeply concerned about privacy and national security issues – and that held true whether Democrat or Republican, young or old, wealthy or struggling by on a tight budget, said DeGraff. Fully 77% of those surveyed raised the specter of privacy issues, 79% citing national security concerns in the latest Future Attributes Study. But the analyst noted both those numbers dipped about 3 points from the 2024 study – and he expects such concerns will continue to decline. Opening the Door Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images Even as Chinese auto exports soar – and likely because of that – resistance has been fierce in the U.S. market. The trade group the Alliance for American Manufacturing has described the potential arrival of Chinese brands as “an existential threat” to today’s automotive establishment. But DeGraff and others think the door can’t be barred forever. “All signs point to Chinese manufacturers selling EVs in the U.S., if not by the end of the decade then soon afterwards,” he told Autoblog. Even Pres. Trump appears to be warming to the idea. Michigan U.S. Senator Gary Peters quoted Trump saying, “Let China come in,” during a visit to Detroit last week. He has put a caveat on such a move, however, demanding the Chinese, like other foreign automakers, set up manufacturing operations in the States. Several have already raised that possibility. The big question for us is when and where will we go to the USA? I think we will have an announcement on that in the next 24-36 months,” Ash Sutcliffe, Head of Global Communications for Geely Holding Group, told reporters during the automaker’s CES drive event. In fact, Geely might not have to wait. It already operates a plant near Charleston, South Carolina for its Swedish-based Volvo and Polestar brands. The facility could make room for additional products, officials have previously indicated. DeGraff thinks Geely could launch there with a product from its Zeekr brand which “has the potential to be the hot, hip tech-oriented brand for younger buyers.” Whether Zeekr is first, he and other industry trackers are confident its just a matter of time until the Chinese can break the Great Wall effectively barring them from the U.S. Related: New Chinese SUV Packs 1,381 HP and the Largest Battery Ever in a PHEV View the full article
  18. January is Teen Driving Awareness month and Nationwide is partnering with one of motorsports’ most recognizable names, Dale Earnhardt Jr., on a new multimedia campaign designed to deliver a simple message to teen drivers: put the phone down when you’re driving. The multimedia campaign was filmed at zMAX Dragway using a course designed by B.R.A.K.E.S., a teen driver safety program founded by former Top Fuel driver Doug Herbert. For parents, the day their teen starts driving is equally exciting and nerve-wracking. The latest survey from Nationwide confirms those fears: only 4 in 10 parents rate their teen’s driving as “very good” or “excellent,” and distracted driving ranks among their top concerns (42%). “As a parent, I know how important it is to set the right example behind the wheel,” said Dale Earnhardt Jr. “This partnership with Nationwide is about giving families practical tools to build safer habits and rewarding them for doing the right thing.” Filmed on a driving course near Charlotte, NC, that was designed by the free national pro-active teen driver safety program B.R.A.K.E.S., the multimedia campaign features a parent-and-teen duo learning safe driving techniques with professional instructors and encouragement from Dale Jr. The family also got firsthand experience with Nationwide’s Focused Driving Rewards® program[i], which helps drivers earn points for distraction-free driving and redeem them for gift cards. “Every mile matters when it comes to teen safety,” said Chris Lee, Nationwide’s VP of Personal Lines Auto. “Partnering with Dale Jr. helps us amplify a simple but powerful message: put the phone down when you’re behind the wheel. With programs like Focused Driving Rewards, families have a practical way to reinforce that message and see real results.” Research backs it up: 82% of parents say they would enroll their teen in a program that rewards safe driving, with most citing improved driving habits and safety as a top concern (44%)[ii]. Nationwide’s ‘Focused Driving Rewards®’ is open to everyone—not just Nationwide customers—and offers rewards for drivers who keep their focus on the road by not handling their phone. Program Highlights: Easy App-Based Experience: Track progress and earn points through the Nationwide app, with drivers earning points redeemable for gift cards when they avoid distractions over time. Open to All: Nationwide policy is not required, any driver can join and offers up to $60 every six months redeemable in gift cards for those who keep their focus on the road. Proven Results: Since launching in 40+ states in 2025, 38% of enrolled participants have lowered their phone distraction, averaging a 39% reduction[iii]. Simple Focus: The program only measures phone handling events like tapping, hand-held calls, or phone motion, making it easy to understand and improve. “Driving is a big milestone for teens, and it’s natural for parents to feel a little anxious. With the right tools and open conversations, families can ease some of that worry and help teens build confidence behind the wheel. Every trip becomes a chance to practice and reinforce safe driving habits,” said Lee. To learn more and enroll in Focused Driving Rewards click here. 21. Toyota’s Land Cruiser lineage goes all the way back to the 1950s, and the Japanese manufacturer has just revealed the most powerful Land Cruiser ever. Known as the Land Cruiser 300 Performance Hybrid, this off-road bruiser is based on the J300-series of the SUV sold in other markets. Producing 457 horsepower and 583 lb-ft of torque, the new Performance Hybrid comprehensively outmuscles the J250-series Land Cruiser currently sold in North America. Think of the new 300 as a Nissan Armada Nismo rival, and you’ll get an idea of what this brawny SUV is all about. The First Land Cruiser 300 Hybrid 2026 Toyota Land Cruiser 300 Hybrid T View the 4 images of this gallery on the original article Toyota has been gradually hybridizing its largest models over the last couple of years. After decades of thirsty V8s, models like the Tundra and Sequoia are now available with turbocharged V6 hybrids. It’s now the turn of the mighty Land Cruiser, which uses Toyota’s 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 paired with an electric motor. Maximum torque is now up by 20% over the non-hybrid Land Cruiser 300, which uses a 3.3-liter twin-turbo mill, and throttle response has been enhanced by 40%. Toyota Toyota says the new 300 Performance Hybrid can run on electric power alone at speeds of up to 30 km/h (18.6 mph), which is perfect for creeping along in traffic or staying quiet on wildlife-watching expeditions. The SUV has a ten-speed automatic and a new electric power steering system. Its off-roading capabilities remain, with Toyota taking special care to waterproof the battery housing, keeping the SUV’s water-wading capabilities intact. A sporty GR Sport trim is also available, with exclusive styling features, much like the GR Sport version of the new RAV4. North America’s Land Cruiser is the smaller J250-based model, a midsize SUV that also uses a hybrid. But, unlike the bigger 300, our one has a smaller 2.4-liter turbo-four. Together with the electric motors, it makes 326 hp combined. That’s strong, but nowhere near as powerful as the 457-hp 300. Will The Land Cruiser 300 Hybrid Ever Come To America? Toyota T There’s virtually no chance of the most potent Land Cruiser ever coming to the United States. The previous J200 Land Cruiser struggled to sell here, as buyers with over $80,000 to spend preferred luxury models like the Lexus LX, which itself has been hybridized recently. That’s why Toyota chose to bring the smaller J250 to the U.S. market. The J300 will continue to be sold in markets like Africa, East Europe, the Middle East, and Asia and the Pacific. In many of these regions, the more rugged Land Cruiser is preferred over unnecessarily opulent luxury SUVs; roads are often in a poorer condition, so a proper large SUV that can handle these conditions becomes a need, not just a want. While many of these decisions appear to be head-scratchers to enthusiasts, it typically comes down to demand: If Americans aren't buying it, automakers won't sell it. The big Land Cruiser aside, we see the same happening in multiple segments. Kia just launched a sweet K4 Sportswagon with a manual, but Americans seem to have an aversion to manuals andwagons, so it will never be sold here. The regular (non-GTI/R) VW Golf is gone, joining a pile of cool hatchbacks that gradually fell out of favor here. Add the Sportback version of Audi's RS3 to that list. Finally, what about Suzuki's Jimny? The utilitarian 4x4 is a hit elsewhere, but its small size and lack of power will make most Americans wince. Unless U.S. tastes suddenly change, these are just a few of the cars we'll have to admire from afar. View the full article

  24. The Affordable WRX Makes a ReturnSubaru quietly dropped the base WRX for 2025, saying most buyers skipped it for higher trims. On paper, that move made sense. But it also pushed the WRX further from its roots as an affordable, accessible sports sedan. For 2026, Subaru is reversing course. The base WRX is back, now starting under $33,000, and it keeps the same standard features buyers expect from higher trims. Subaru also cut prices across the lineup without stripping out equipment. At the other end, there’s a new limited-run WRX Series.Yellow – built for enthusiasts who want something that stands out, both in looks and attitude. Elijah Nicholson-Messmer What the Price Cuts Look LikeThe real headline is the price gap between 2025 and 2026. Subaru didn’t just bring back the base model – it reset the whole lineup by cutting prices up to nearly $4,000. Yes, that includes the STI-tuned WRX tS. Here’s how the new 2026 MSRPs stack up against last year’s, not counting the $1,195 destination charge (in most states): Model Trim 2025 MSRP 2026 MSRP Difference WRX (Base) – $32,495 New for 2026 WRX Premium $37,750 $33,995 -$3,755 WRX Limited $42,130 $38,995 -$3,135 WRX GT $47,705 $44,995 -$2,710 WRX tS $47,705 $44,995 -$2,710 WRX Series.Yellow – $45,995 New for 2026 Interestingly, Subaru touted that the current pricing is in line with how the WRX was priced over two decades ago. Adjusted for inflation, Subaru said the 2026 WRX costs about the same as the original 2002 model that put the car on the map in the US – but now you get way more tech, safety, and comfort. Kristen Brown WRX Series.Yellow and the Bigger PictureAt the top of the lineup sits the WRX Series.Yellow, limited to just 350 units. First shown last year with the BRZ Series.Yellow, it’s based on the tS, but gets a bold Sunrise Yellow paint job, matte black wheels, and yellow interior accents. Under the skin, it’s the same as the tS with STI-tuned dampers and Brembo brakes, so the real difference is in the look and collectibility, not extra performance. Subaru cutting prices across its entire lineup is no coincidence. WRX sales dropped 41.2 percent in 2025, down to just 10,930 units compared to 18,587 units sold the year prior. Subaru didn’t say the price cuts are a direct response, but it’s hard to see it any other way. By lowering the entry point and boosting each trim’s value, Subaru is obviously trying to win back buyers to choose its “rally-inspired sports sedan.” Whether it works is another question, but at least the company’s listening to the market again. 25. Fire Erupts During Development Test DriveA development-phase Hyundai Santa Fe test vehicle was destroyed after catching fire during road testing in South Korea. Fire crews fully extinguished the blaze, but not before the vehicle was engulfed and rendered a total loss. The Santa Fe involved was reportedly an export-spec model undergoing real-world validation testing. According to Korea's Naver, the driver noticed smoke rising from the hood while driving, safely pulled over to the shoulder, and evacuated the vehicle before the fire intensified. Fortunately, there were no injuries or casualties. Hyundai has since confirmed the vehicle was part of its development program and says it plans to retrieve the remains to investigate the exact cause of the fire. Ulsan Fire Department A Critical Moment for Hyundai’s Best-Selling SUVThe timing of the incident is particularly sensitive for Hyundai. The current-generation Santa Fe has played a key role in Hyundai and Kia’s record-setting U.S. sales performance in 2025, helping fuel one of the strongest growth streaks among mainstream automakers. With bold styling, improved interiors, and a wider powertrain mix, the Santa Fe has become a cornerstone product in Hyundai’s North American lineup, making any safety-related headlines difficult to ignore. Spy shots and reports over recent months have hinted at new electrified variants and additional refinements aimed squarely at global markets, including the U.S. This test vehicle fire, while isolated for now, underscores just how intensive and sometimes unpredictable late-stage development testing can be, especially as automakers integrate more complex powertrain and electrical systems. View the 3 images of this gallery on the original article Why Fires During Testing Aren’t a FailureWhile Hyundai has not linked this incident to any known defect, it arrives against a backdrop of heightened scrutiny around fire risks across the industry – and Hyundai in particular. Hyundai Motor America has issued recalls tied to potential fire hazards, including a renewed recall involving the Tucson over a newly identified risk. These actions show a willingness to address problems while keeping fire safety firmly in the spotlight. Adding to that context, previous reporting revealed that a fire risk associated with an earlier Hyundai Santa Fe may have remained undiscovered had it not been for crash testing. That case highlighted how certain vulnerabilities only emerge under extreme conditions, precisely the kind of scenarios development and validation testing are designed to uncover. Hyundai Motor Company says it will retrieve the vehicle and conduct a detailed forensic investigation, stressing that no changes to the Santa Fe’s product roadmap or electrification strategy have been announced and that no recalls or production halts are planned.
