  4. Ford Wants to Prove Bronco's Worth Where it CountsFord is expanding the Bronco’s role beyond recreation, announcing a new initiative aimed at putting its off-road SUV directly into the hands of search-and-rescue teams that operate in extreme conditions. The move follows a firsthand experience by Ford President and CEO Jim Farley, who last summer observed Grand County Search and Rescue in Utah using a Bronco to navigate difficult terrain during active rescue operations. The moment underscored a simple reality in backcountry emergencies – vehicle capability can determine whether help arrives in time. For Ford, the Bronco is more than a lifestyle off-roader, but a tool capable of operating where infrastructure ends. Designed with locking differentials, advanced four-wheel-drive systems, and high-clearance suspension, Bronco was engineered for environments where traction, durability, and reliability aren’t optional. That same engineering focus is what makes it suitable for search-and-rescue work, where teams routinely push vehicles well beyond what most consumer SUVs are designed to handle. Ford “Answer the Call” Program Delivers Mission-Ready BroncosThat philosophy now takes shape in Ford’s new collaboration between the Bronco Wild Fund and the National Association for Search and Rescue (NASAR). Dubbed the Bronco “Answer the Call” program, the initiative will donate five specialized Bronco Badlands models equipped with the Sasquatch Package to search-and-rescue organizations in 2026. Two recipients, Kern County Fire & Rescue in California and Teton County Search & Rescue in Wyoming, have already been confirmed, with applications now open for three additional teams nationwide. Ford is partnering with emergency equipment supplier Darley to upfit the vehicles with satellite connectivity via Starlink, drone systems for aerial reconnaissance, and heavy-duty winches and recovery gear. The goal is to deliver fully mission-ready vehicles to volunteer teams that often rely on personal equipment to do life-saving work. For NASAR, the program addresses a critical need, giving under-resourced teams access to vehicles designed to perform in remote, unpredictable environments. Ford Capability That Translates to Everyday UseWhat makes Ford’s announcement notable is that the Broncos being donated are fundamentally the same vehicles consumers can buy. While the rescue units receive specialized equipment, the underlying platform, chassis, drivetrain, suspension, and four-wheel-drive systems are unchanged. That serves as real-world validation of Bronco’s engineering, proving it can withstand sustained abuse in environments far harsher than daily driving. If a Bronco can be trusted by search-and-rescue professionals operating in canyons, mountains, and backcountry terrain, it’s more than capable of handling weather, poor roads, and unexpected challenges at home. By putting Bronco to work where failure isn’t an option, Ford is making a strong, no-nonsense case for its SUV as both a serious tool and a confidently overqualified daily driver. 5. Everyone Moved On Except Manual BuyersToday’s car market looks vastly different from decades ago, shaped by the rise of electrified vehicles and the steady decline of manual gearboxes. Interestingly, however, a report fromMotor1shows that some automakers still saw a notable share of U.S. buyers favoring stick shifts over automatics last year. Sales of the Acura Integra equipped with a manual transmission rose from 19.8 percent in 2024 to 22 percent last year. Similarly, the ultra-limited Pagani Utopia, the successor to the Huayra, saw manual-gearbox demand climb from 70 percent to 75 percent, while the Lotus Emira posted a two-percent increase to 88 percent. On the more affordable end of the spectrum, the Volkswagen Jetta GLI improved from 38 percent to 44.9 percent, though the Golf with the stick shift option in the GTI and R trims was already dropped. Acura The Other Side of the StickThe Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing (61 percent), Porsche 718 Boxster/Cayman (46 percent), and Subaru BRZ (90 percent) likewise recorded improved demand for their three-pedal variants. However, the BRZ's larger sibling, the WRX, saw the opposite trend, with its manual share slipping from 86.7 percent to 85 percent. That pattern was more common across several models on the list. Manual-equipped vehicles that posted a lower sales share in 2025 compared with the previous year include the BMW M2 (40 percent), M3 (50 percent), M4 (33 percent), and Z4 (50 percent); the Honda Civic Si/Type R (six percent); the Hyundai Elantra N (25 percent); the Toyota GR86 (52 percent), the outgoing GR Supra (56 percent), GR Corolla (71 percent), and the Tacoma (one percent). The publication also noted that 83 percent of Porsche 911 buyers opted for a manual transmission over the brand’s PDK dual-clutch automatic. However, that figure drops to 15 percent once trims offered exclusively with an auto are factored in. Porsche Where the Stick Shift Goes from HereOther models on the list without a clearly stated year-over-year increase or decrease include the Mazda MX-5 Miata (60 percent in 2023), the Nissan Z (46.1 percent), and the Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing (48 percent), which stood at “around 50 percent” in 2024. Automakers contacted but not responding to the publication included Ford and Jeep, both of which offer manual options on the Bronco, Mustang, and Wrangler. With renewed interest in combustion-powered vehicles heading into 2026, it will be worth watching whether the manual gearbox – long synonymous with driver engagement and performance – can make a more significant comeback in the years ahead. That shift could also be influenced by broader strategy changes, with automakers such as Volvo rolling back earlier all-EV ambitions. 7. AEV’s system-engineered builds have long set the bar for serious adventure vehicles, and now Ford owners finally get their turn. The new AEV FXL marks the brand’s first step onto the Ford Super Duty platform, delivering a turn-key expedition build that adds capability and confidence without compromising the Super Duty’s workhorse DNA. What makes the AEV FXL different isn’t just its size; it’s the way the system works together. AEV engineers built a suite of components that communicate as a complete package, eliminating much of the guesswork and compromise common in heavy truck builds. Every element of the AEV FXL is designed to work together as part of a fully integrated system, eliminating the compromises that often come with piecemeal builds. The result is a heavy-duty truck that feels intentional in every detail, from ride quality and durability to stance and clearance. Rather than chasing lift for lift’s sake, AEV engineered the FXL around a clear objective: fit 40-inch tires with minimal lift while maintaining proper geometry, ride quality, and real-world usability. The name reflects that mission: “F” for Ford and “XL,” the Roman numeral for 40, highlighting the massive BFGoodrich HD-Terrain KT tires that anchor the build, achieving traction, clearance, and presence without feeling overbuilt or compromised. READ MORE: Check Out These Great Sponsors & Exhibitors from Overland Expo SoCal At the core of the FXL is a fully integrated system of AEV-designed components developed to work together as a single package. A 4-inch DualSport XP suspension with AEV-tuned Bilstein shocks delivers the clearance needed for serious terrain while preserving payload and towing confidence. The setup is paired with 18-inch AEV Katmai DualSport wheels, which are beadlock-capable for low-pressure off-road travel and optimized for heavy loads. To accommodate the increased tire size and maintain full articulation, AEV added HighMark fender flares that widen the stance and prevent rubbing. Protection comes from stamped steel front and rear bumpers designed for real use, including winch compatibility, recovery points, auxiliary lighting options, and full integration with factory driver-assist systems. Set to make its public debut at the 2026 North American International Auto Show in Detroit this week, the AEV FXL represents a major milestone for both AEV and Ford Super Duty owners. 9. Alfa Romeo first revealed the 2026 Tonale in October last year, with changes like revised exterior styling—it’s one of the most eye-catching crossovers around, that’s for sure. The 2026 model was originally scheduled to reach North America showrooms at the end of 2025, but that never happened. This raised some alarm bells, especially since Dodge has discontinued the Hornet, the Tonale’s twin. But we’re happy to report that the 2026 Tonale will arrive at dealers this quarter. It now has the tough job of turning around Alfa’s poor 2025 on the sales charts. Related: A 400-HP Alfa Romeo Tonale Quadrifoglio Could Finally Be on the Way Alfa Sales Tumbled Last Year Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio Collezione Alfa Romeo View the 3 images of this gallery on the original article The Tonale was Alfa’s best-selling model last year, but it still only managed sales of 2,414 units, a 29% decline relative to 2024. It was followed by the Stelvio on 1,872 units (-41%) and the Giulia on 1,366 units (-41%). Overall, Alfa’s sales declined by 36% last year, but its fourth-quarter performance was particularly poor, declining by 57% year-on-year. Being a small crossover and the company’s most affordable model, the 2026 Tonale is best-positioned to accumulate sales, but it just hasn’t happened so far. It also finds itself in a tough segment populated by established players like the BMW X1, Volvo XC40, and Audi Q3. The Alfa’s spirited turbo engine and sharp handling stand out, but it lacks the spaciousness of many rivals. Related: 3 Reasons Alfa Romeo Is Failing In The United States Plug-In Hybrid Model Falls Away 2026 Alfa Romeo Tonale Stellantis View the 3 images of this gallery on the original article For 2026, the Tonale now has just one engine choice, that being a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 268 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. The previously available PHEV has been discontinued. All-wheel drive is standard, as is a nine-speed automatic, and it’ll find its way to 60 mph in a decent 6.5 seconds. S If compact crossover sales were based on looks alone, the 2026 Tonale would be unstoppable. It now has a new front fascia with a concave scudetto grille. Go for the Sport Speciale trim, and you get three-hole 20-inch wheels and a two-tone Alcantara interior. There are also three new exterior colors, those being Rosso Brera, Verde Monza, and Giallo Ocra. It makes most rivals look comparatively bland. Inside, red leather is now available optionally, alongside the more somber black. Smart touches like aluminum shift paddles on upper trims are classic Alfa. Pricing starts at $36,995 for the Sprint, increasing to $41,495 for the Veloce and Sport Speciale. Alfa said it wants to focus on smaller SUVs after it shelved plans for a large electric SUV. Whether this strategy works out for the automaker remains to be seen, but the Tonale will have to do better than it has this far. View the full article
  10. Pirelli: Still Italian, But With a TwistPirelli is one of the default names for drivers who care about performance. From high-end road cars to Formula 1, the Milan-based tire maker is renowned for its premium rubber and proprietary technology. To regular consumers, it’s Italian through and through, both in image and in heritage. Here’s what most people don’t realize: over a third of Pirelli is owned by Sinochem, a Chinese state-run chemical giant. That 34 percent stake is now a major headache, the Financial Times reports. The US is getting ready to enforce new rules aimed at Chinese-backed tech in vehicles, and Pirelli could end up locked out of the American market if nothing changes. Pirelli doesn’t just sell basic tires in the US. Most of what it offers is high-end, packed with its own tech – the exact kind of thing regulators are now watching closely. Company leaders have explored ways to curb Sinochem’s influence, even discussing selling off the stake, but so far, nothing concrete has happened. Pirelli P Zero on a BMW Rome Watches Closely—and Prepares to ActItaly’s government has been in the mix for a while, but now the pressure is back on. With US restrictions coming in March, Rome is ready to step in again if talks don’t move forward. Under Italy’s so-called “golden powers” legislation, the government can impose limits on foreign shareholders in companies deemed strategically important. That power has already been used once. In 2023, Italy restricted information-sharing between Pirelli and Sinochem and raised the voting threshold for key board decisions, citing the need to protect sensitive know-how. If negotiations fall apart, Italy could go as far as freezing Sinochem’s voting rights. Officials would rather avoid that, hoping for a deal that keeps Pirelli strong without picking a fight with China. Pirelli All Roads Lead Back to the US MarketThe US accounts for roughly one-fifth of Pirelli’s total revenues, making it too large to lose without serious consequences. It is also a key market for premium and performance tires, where margins are healthier, and brand equity matters more. Losing the US wouldn’t just hit sales; it would knock Pirelli down a peg as a global tech leader in tires. That’s why Italy is ready to get involved, and why options that once seemed off the table are now up for debate. Dan Krauss of DanK Haus Productions View the full article
  11. General Motors is starting the year with a fresh skyline address and a carefully chosen message. As it opens the doors to its new headquarters in downtown Detroit, the company is keen to remind everyone that this is more than a new office. GM says its footprint is woven into the US economy at a basic level, from the people it employs to the suppliers it leans on and the towns that grow around its plants. GM A New HQ, A Big FootprintGM says that one in every ten American autoworkers is a GM employee, enough people to almost fill the University of Michigan’s Big House on a game day. In 2024, the company says it contributed nearly 50 billion dollars directly to US GDP, which it compares to funding six Olympic Games. Once you add in supply chain activity and what its employees spend in their own communities, GM puts its total US economic footprint at 134 billion dollars for the year. The new Detroit headquarters is meant to be the visible symbol of all that. It anchors GM back on Woodward Avenue, close to its original roots, and sits on top of a dealer and product network that reaches almost everywhere. More than 85 percent of Americans live within 10 miles of a GM dealer, so whether it is a Chevrolet pickup in Texas, a GMC SUV in Colorado or a Cadillac in New York, the company is part of daily life in a way that few other brands can match. It is also coming off a strong year on the sales side, having capped off 2025 with record sales. However, it's loss on EV sales was a bitter pill to swallow. http://gmauthority.com/blog/gm/gm-facilities/gm-usa-facilities/gm-wentzville-plant/ View the 1 images of this gallery on the original article Investment, Jobs And Where The Money LandsGM says it has invested 60 billion dollars in the United States since 2020, money that has gone into assembly plants, battery facilities, R and D centers and the tooling that sits behind them. Within that, 242 million dollars over the past five years has been poured into skilled trades apprenticeships, training new toolmakers, electricians and technical specialists. For people inside the plants, that is not just a headline number. Peter Ramirez, a controls engineer at Parma Metal Center in Ohio with more than 40 years at GM, points to a recent 250 million dollar investment at his facility as proof that the company is still committed. In his words, it is security for his family and his community. GM’s own manufacturing boss, Mike Trevorrow, makes a similar point. With most Americans living close to a GM facility or dealership, he argues the jobs and opportunities that come with those sites are part of why the company still matters beyond its own walls. At the same time, GM is reshaping the way that money flows. It has told suppliers to strip China made parts out of its US products by 2027, that push could deepen its domestic footprint over time, but it will not be painless for smaller suppliers who now have to rebuild long standing supply chains. Behind the confidence, there are real risks. GM’s strongest profits still come from traditional trucks and SUVs, the same vehicles that underpin those record Chevrolet, GMC and Cadillac results. The electric side of the business has yet to catch up. The company has already taken a series of charges tied to slow EV rollouts and revised plans. Those losses are tied to the same Ultium battery plants and software heavy platforms GM points to as the future of American manufacturing. Anyhow, the new Detroit headquarters, the stadium sized workforce and the big GDP numbers are real. The open question is whether GM can carry that scale across into its next generation of products without losing the economic clout it is so eager to celebrate today. View the full article

  14. Not One Truck Fits AllThe Ram 1500 lineup is more alive than ever with the TRX’s return. However, according to Ram CEO Tim Kuniskis, the 1500 TRX isn’t meant for everyone, as other variants may better address the brand’s diverse range of customer needs. Speaking with The Drive, Kuniskis suggested that customers planning to daily drive a 1500 should skip the TRX and opt for the RHO instead. From a sales perspective, steering buyers away from the most expensive trim may sound counterintuitive. But it reflects the brand’s effort to look out for its customers, especially given that the TRX was revived for enthusiasts, despite being discontinued after the 2024 model year. Ram Daily Driver or Weekend Weapon?“If you want to drive this every single day as your only truck, the RHO is a way better option. It is an absolutely way, way, way better option,” the Ram CEO said. For context, the 1500 TRX is powered by a 6.2-liter supercharged Hemi V8, which—by displacement alone—already makes it a gas guzzler. Ram further tuned the engine to produce 777 horsepower, an increase of 75 horsepower over the previous iteration, meaning it will likely require more fuel to deliver that added performance. That output now puts it ahead of its direct rival, the Ford F-150 Raptor R, which makes 720 horsepower from a 5.2-liter supercharged V8. The Ram RHO, meanwhile, takes a more restrained approach. It uses a high-output 3.0-liter inline-six Hurricane engine—roughly half the displacement of the TRX’s V8—yet still delivers a respectable 540 horsepower and 521 lb-ft of torque. A Question of PurposeConsidering the difference between the two 1500 trims, Kuniskis encouraged buyers who are seeking a no-compromise performance truck to choose the flagship model. “If you’re gonna buy a pickup truck and you want this to be your fun, awesome, use it on occasion truck, of course, price not being an object, you want the TRX,” he said. The 2027 Ram 1500 TRX is set to arrive in the second half of 2026 with a starting price of $99,995 (excluding the $2,595 destination fee)—roughly $26,000 more than the base RHO. It will sit firmly at the top of the range, especially now that Kuniskis has put to rest rumors of a high-performance single-cab variant featuring a 6.4-liter Hemi paired with a manual gearbox. 15. It appears that Tesla can’t catch a break from being bombarded with lawsuits. Yet again, it’s door handles. While the EV maker was recently taken to court for the Model 3’s door handle design, this one’s slightly different in that it’s a pre-facelift Model S, specifically MY 2014-16. Newer Teslas feature a flush door handle design, which looks noticeably different from older models. Although they were of a similar retractable pop-out type, the design wasn’t all that reliable, claims the plaintiff. The report comes courtesy of Business Insider, which goes into detail about the class-action lawsuit filed in Florida by John Urban, a Maitland-based 2015 Tesla Model S owner. Tesla Urban's Model S Ludicrous had three out of four of its door handles fail by 2022. This includes the driver's side door, where he had to climb over from the passenger side to exit the vehicle, and continued to do so until he waited for repairs. According to the complaint, this creates a "significant safety risk," as the occupants could potentially be locked inside during emergency situations. The lawsuit mentions that Model S door handles after the 2016 model year have been redesigned, which, according to the Floridian, makes them more reliable. This implies, per the complainant, at least, that Tesla “knew or should have known” about the problem, and that more recent models rarely experience door handle failure. However, there are instances of Tesla’s “more recent” vehicles, like the Cybertruck, experiencing the defect, evidenced by the death of two college students who were trapped inside the burning vehicle after its door handles failed. A similar story from Wisconsin, involving a 2016 Model S, saw its occupants pass away after crashing into a tree. The culprit? Malfunctioning door handles, or so the lawsuit alleges. Tesla The door handle issue grabbed so much attention that the NHTSA launched an investigation against Tesla, and US House Representative Robin Kelly introduced a bill that forces automakers to include "intuitive, accessible, and easy-to-find manual releases" on every car that features electronic door handles. China is also in the mix, but takes things one step further by banning electronic door handles on all cars from 2027. Truth be told, door handles are one of those things that never really required all that innovation. View the full article
  16. The Headline Comes FirstTesla CEO Elon Musk announced on X that its Full Self-Driving (FSD) system will be offered exclusively on a monthly subscription basis starting after February 14. However, as is often the case with developments from the company, specific details remain limited, at least as of this writing. What is known so far is that FSD is currently available in the U.S. as an $8,000 option or a $99 monthly subscription on the Tesla Model 3, Model Y, and Cybertruck. The advanced driver-assistance system is also bundled into the Luxe Package on the Model S and Model X, the brand’s higher-end electric vehicle offerings. Tesla will stop selling FSD after Feb 14. FSD will only be available as a monthly subscription thereafter. — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) January 14, 2026 The Risk of Recurring FeesHistorically, consumers have not responded particularly well to monthly subscriptions for in-car features. BMW, for example, previously placed features such as heated seats behind a recurring paywall before ultimately scrapping the program. To be fair, a subscription model can make sense in certain situations. Heated seats, for instance, are unlikely to see much use during the summer months. In this case, short-term Tesla EV owners could benefit from the new approach. FSD itself is not a critical piece of in-car equipment, even by today’s standards. Rather, it is a premium feature that builds on Tesla’s standard Autopilot system, adding functions such as Autopark and Smart Summon. But still, a monthly subscription lowers the barrier to entry, potentially allowing more customers to experience the technology. From Tesla’s perspective, this could also translate into higher long-term revenue compared to relying solely on one-time purchases. Subscriptions Go MainstreamOther automakers have already adopted similar strategies. Ford, for instance, offers its SAE Level 2 advanced driver-assistance system, BlueCruise, primarily through monthly or annual subscriptions, though the Blue Oval brand does provide a one-time purchase option in certain cases. With FSD likely becoming more accessible – depending on pricing – Tesla will also face increased pressure to address ongoing safety concerns surrounding the technology. Federal regulators such as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) have been actively scrutinizing FSD over safety-related issues. In that sense, a subscription-based model may offer the EV maker some legal flexibility by framing FSD as an evolving service rather than an upfront promise of future autonomy. 17. Trick Rides Modernizes the GT350 FormulaTrick Rides has built its reputation on obsessive craftsmanship and reverence for American muscle. Recently, it unveiled the Shelby GT350TR, a modern, track-focused reinterpretation of one of the most important names in American performance. Built entirely in the company’s 31,000-square-foot facility in Yukon, Oklahoma, the GT350TR blends classic Shelby styling cues with contemporary engineering, aiming to deliver modern performance without abandoning the character that made the original GT350 a legend. Unlike a traditional restoration, the GT350TR is a ground-up build designed to meet today’s performance expectations. Steel body panels maintain authenticity, while flush-mounted glass, custom LED taillights, and Ringbrothers hardware introduce subtle modernization. The approach is intentional: keep the visual identity familiar, but engineer everything beneath the surface to modern standards. A custom exhaust system with Ultimate Headers and MagnaFlow mufflers delivers the aggressive sound expected from a Shelby-branded build. For buyers seeking a different flavor of performance, Trick Rides also offers a naturally aspirated 427 cubic-inch stroker engine. Both powertrain options reinforce the same philosophy: high output, mechanical involvement, and a driving experience that stays true to the Shelby name rather than chasing trends. Trick Rides View the 3 images of this gallery on the original article Power Has a Price, and it ain't CheapThe GT350TR rides on a Roadster Shop chassis similar to that of the Fox body Mustang at last year's SEMA, It brings modern rigidity, ride quality, and handling to the classic platform. Independent front suspension, Fox coilover shocks, and a parallel four-bar rear suspension with a 9-inch rear axle provide tunability and stability. Oversized sway bars front and rear, Forgeline three-piece wheels, and Continental Z-rated tires complete the performance-focused setup. Braking is handled by Baer hardware, with six-piston front and four-piston rear calipers sized to match the car’s output. According to founder Jason Engel, the goal was a Shelby that could be driven hard without losing its identity. The Shelby GT350TR starts at $339,000 and is offered in custom paint schemes, positioning it as a high-end, no-compromise build aimed squarely at serious collectors and drivers. 18. The Detroit Auto Show has kicked off, setting the stage for the Automotive Press Association to announce the winners of the North American Car, Truck, and Utility Vehicle of the Year awards (NACTOY). Choosing from a pool of nine finalists (three in each category), judges have selected the following as the best all-new or substantially redesigned vehicles on the market in an independent process that involves them voting individually, with the votes only being counted by Deloitte just before the presentation. Without any further ado, let's see what the winners were. North American Car of the Year Winner Honda View the 3 images of this gallery on the original article The finalists in the Car of the Year category were the Dodge Charger, the Honda Prelude, and the Nissan Sentra, and it's the controversial eighth-generation Charger, now in its 60th year, that took home top honors with its 550-horsepower inline-six. While some judges liked the budget-minded simplicity of the Sentra or the accessible style and fun of the Prelude, it's the retro-futuristic muscle car that won the most votes. Will the Charger's success at the awards ceremony be reflected in improved sales in 2026, or will buyers disagree with the judges? Time will tell. North American Truck of the Year Winner RAM View the 3 images of this gallery on the original article Finalists in this category were limited to just two manufacturers, with the Ram 1500 HEMI and Ram 2500 competing against the Ford Maverick Lobo for North American Truck of the Year. The compact pickup was the winner, giving Ford the Truck of the Year award for the sixth consecutive year. The Ram options may be giving buyers what they want in a V8 engine and exceptional capability, but the Maverick Lobo's fun factor and accessible pricing helped it stand out this year. North American Utility Vehicle of the Year Winner Lucid View the 3 images of this gallery on the original article Competing in the North American Utility Vehicle of the Year category were the innovative new Lucid Gravity SUV, the compellingly-priced Nissan Leaf crossover (which starts under $30,000), and the larger, more luxurious Hyundai Palisade SUV, with the latter winning the award in 2026. The Gravity made the finals for its innovative technologies and space, while the Leaf was competing on its price and usefulness, but the Palisade is just too good an all-rounder and too well-priced to be beaten. Final ThoughtsRelated: Every 2026 World Car of the Year Finalist Has Some Form of Electrification With any award, there is always bound to be some controversy, and there will always be those who disagree with the winners or even the finalists. The Dodge Charger is a tough one to justify this year, as its platform was originally meant to be EV-only, baking in unavoidable compromises, and its sales so far have been weak. With affordability a hot topic at the moment, some will argue that the Sentra should have won. But perhaps that's why the Ford Maverick Lobo stood out in its category — it's a blend of practicality, style, and fun in an affordable package. Some might wonder why something as expensive as the Gravity was considered, too, especially since it's an EV, which makes it a niche vehicle. But that's the beauty of the NACTOY awards: numerous judges from a diversity of backgrounds vote independently, and even the president of the association doesn't know the winners until the moment they're announced. Do you agree with the winners this year? If not, which of the finalists would you have given the awards to? Let us know in the comments below. View the full article
  19. Keeping the V8 RunningDownsized turbos have been the way for the last couple of years. Sixes have been replaced by boosted fours, turbo-sixes have substituted V8s and V12s, and, well, you get the picture. Yes, the V8 is still around, but the options are slimming down by the minute. Thankfully, there are still automakers who want to keep it alive by any means necessary. One of those manufacturers is Ford, and it's hoping its planned solution will keep them around for much longer. According to CEO Jim Farley, the company is open to hybridizing its V8 engines if that should help extend the relevance of the eight-cylinder motor for more generations to come. Ford Hybrid V8s Coming SoonApart from turbocharging, electrification has become another avenue for automakers to extract more performance and efficiency out of their powertrains. Of course, one of the reasons why they're doing that is to comply with ever-tightening emissions standards worldwide. With that, Ford acknowledges that it has to hybridize its large and performance-oriented engines to stay relevant. "It’s pretty clear that hybrid is the performance drivetrain of the future," said Will Ford, the General Manager of Ford Racing, during the Dakar Rally. CEO Jim Farley also mentioned that hybrid V8 power was 'absolutely' on the cards for the Raptor range. Car Expert also noted that the Mustang could receive some battery assistance in the future. A Good Move?During the event, Farley pointed out to the press that the best-selling version of the F-150 has been the EcoBoost hybrid. He also mentioned that Ford has accelerated investment in the hybridization of its vehicles, including the performance side. While Ford has seen success in hybrid pickups, the final decision will depend on customer reaction towards the idea. "We’re not going to get ahead of ourselves and do something that customers don’t want, but we absolutely need to make sure that we continue to push Raptor in every way to make it maintain its position as the most off-road capable vehicle," said Ford. He adds, "That's the nice thing about hybrid is it might allow us to keep the V8 alive a little longer – hopefully a lot longer." John Beltz Snyder Potential ProductsWith that in mind, it seems that Ford is already in the middle of developing its battery-assisted V8. But what products could make this possible hybrid engine? The most logical answer seems to be the F-150 Raptor. Currently, the Raptor R uses a supercharged 5.2-liter Carnivore V8 with 720 hp and 640 lb-ft of torque. No doubt those are strong numbers, but electrification could bump that up even higher if given the chance. Of course, another candidate would be the aforementioned Mustang. That said, a hybrid V8 could also make sense in less performance-oriented applications. The Ford Expedition is one, and another could be the Super Duty. The latter could greatly benefit from a hybrid system should it be given the capability to power tools and devices in remote job sites. Either way, Ford is looking deep into the matter, and there's a chance we might see the first electrified V8s roll out before the end of the decade. Ford View the full article

  21. Backing Away From The Brink of Trade WarAfter months of escalating tensions, the European Union and China have agreed to a framework replacing tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles with minimum pricing agreements. Rather than forcing Chinese manufacturers to pay tariffs, the EU is asking China to sell cars at or above a predetermined price floor. China's Ministry of Commerce called the framework an important breakthrough. It marks a marked departure from 2024, when China threatened countermeasures on European imports. Notably, Chinese carmakers captured nearly 13% market share of electric vehicles in Europe by the end of 2025, despite the existing tariffs. How the Price Agreement System Actually WorksUnder the new framework, Chinese manufacturers avoid tariffs by guaranteeing their vehicles won't undercut European competitors. Each carmaker negotiates its own minimum price floor with the EU, based on vehicle type and market segment. The EU monitors compliance through import documentation and can reimpose tariffs if manufacturers breach agreements. This system allows Chinese EVs market access while theoretically protecting European automakers from what Europe calls predatory pricing. However, enforcement remains challenging since manufacturers can adjust specifications or introduce new models to work around pricing commitments. Volkswagen View the 2 images of this gallery on the original article America Took A Different ApproachIn comparison, the United States has taken a fundamentally different path to address the looming threat of cheap Chinese EVs undermining domestic production. Electric cars, like the best-selling $10k BYD Seagull with a 250-mile range, could seriously shake things up in the US market, where the average price of new cars has crossed $50,000. The Seagull, and a flood of Chinese EVs like it, remain unobtainable in America thanks to high import tariffs, bans on the connected tech in them, and registration hurdles that’ll turn off even the most enthusiastic deal-shoppers. The practical impact on consumers remains minimal in the US, since Chinese EVs represent only 2% of total electric vehicle imports. BYD Why the US Won't Adopt EU-Style Pricing AgreementsThe probability of America implementing EU-style minimum pricing appears extremely low. All things considered, the tariff debate is bipartisan, now leaving little room for diplomatic compromise. Secondly, the US puts national security and industrial policy before access to super-affordable Chinese EVs. Lastly, with Chinese EVs representing a tiny fraction of vehicular imports, the US faces much less pressure than the EU to compromise, where electric vehicles from China clocked in over 20%. Europe has sought to regulate Chinese competition while keeping markets open. America has chosen to wall off its market, betting domestic manufacturers can catch up behind protective barriers. 22. Around a month ago, Dodge dealers were still battling to sell 2024 versions of the Hornet plug-in hybrid. At that stage, inventory of the 2024 electrified SUV still sat at over 80%. But the Hornet’s problems run far deeper than the hybrid model, as Dodge has seen fit to kill off the crossover entirely, including the base non-hybrid model. This means there’ll be no 2026 Hornet, with the sporty crossover surviving for a mere three model years. Dodge Blames Policy Shift For Hornet’s Demise Dodge Hornet James Riswick View the 3 images of this gallery on the original article A Dodge spokesperson was vague when explaining the reasons for the Hornet’s demise, but ensured that existing owners of the crossover would continue receiving support for parts and servicing. "Production of the Dodge Hornet, built in Italy, has ended due to shifts in the policy environment,” said the spokesperson in a statement to CarBuzz. “Dodge is committed to ensuring Dodge Hornet owners continue to receive customer support, service, warranty coverage and sustained parts supply. All Dodge Hornet models carry a 3-year/36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper and 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty. Dodge Hornet R/T PHEV upgrades to 8-year/80,000-mile warranty on hybrid components and 8-year/100,000-mile warranty for battery." Last year, sales of the Hornet fell off a cliff. Only 9,365 units were sold, a decline of 54% relative to 2024. In Q4 alone, only 879 Hornets were sold, a drop of 82%. Poor sales aside, the “shifts in policy” Dodge referenced likely had to do with the implications of tariffs, which particularly impacted smaller models like the Hornet in price-sensitive segments. As the Hornet was assembled in Italy, it was directly affected by the Trump administration’s tariffs. Dodge Can Refocus On High-Horsepower Models 2026 Dodge Durango Stellantis View the 3 images of this gallery on the original article Although the Hornet’s 268-horsepower engine was no slouch, it was still an outlier in Dodge’s lineup of cars. This is a brand that thrives on large, powerful models, as evidenced by strong sales of the Durango three-row SUV last year. The SUV’s powerful V6 and V8 engines make it an outstanding performer in its segment. The new Charger muscle car also emphasized the continued relevance of gas power at Dodge, with the SixPack models introducing a 550-horsepower 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine last year. There are still hopes that a V8-powered Charger will make a comeback, too. The Hornet’s departure is a disappointment, though, as it was one of the more engaging small crossovers to drive. But you can still buy one, sort of, in the form of the Alfa Romeo Tonale, which lives on for 2026. It has the same powertrain and underpinnings as the Hornet, but with an even more attractive design. 23. Like a growing number of Americans, you might look back fondly on your younger days, strapping on a backpack and hiking into the woods for a weekend of camping adventures. But the days of sleeping on the hard ground are but a memory for most campers who prefer to have at least a few of the comforts of home wherever they bed down for the night. Honda That’s given rise to a growing market for lightweight, towable RVs like the Scamp Lite and Airstream Basecamp. And they could soon get some serious competition from Honda Motor Co. The automaker today pulled the wraps off the new Base Station Prototype, a small and modular package it believes could “revolutionize and redefine the towable EV space.” “Base Station is a perfect example of what can happen when you let a team of researchers, designers and engineers pursue bold new ideas to create new value for our customers,” Jane Nakagawa, vice president of the American Honda R&D Business Unit, said during a preview of the new camper. Big Things in a Small PackageThe camper is small enough to fit into the typical garage or parking space, Honda noted, and, at under 1,500 pounds, can be towed by even some subcompact crossovers and sedans. The futuristic design of the Base Camp Prototype is no accident. Honda didn’t want to roll out just another small RV. While it folds into a compact, aerodynamic package, the prototype quickly pops open into a roomy living space with a 7-foot ceiling and room for as many as four. That includes a fold-down, queen-size futon, as well as an optional bunk bed for the kids. View the 3 images of this gallery on the original article Base Station shows a lot of creative thinking, such as the LED light ring surrounding its big side window. The design is modular, with a variety of different options available, including a fold-out kitchenette and shower. The modules, meanwhile, can be swapped in and out without the need for power tools, said the development team leader Dillon Kane. “The goal is to democratize camping with a light, towable camper you can tow with a compact crossover or EV,” Kane explained during a sneak peek event at the Honda R&D center in Torrance, California where primary development work has been taking place. A Focus on Comfort, Wherever You Go Along with the kitchen and shower, Base Station can be equipped with a fully functional climate control system. You can easily plug it in should you settle in at one of the countless RV parks that dot the American landscape. But the Honda RV is designed to let you travel far off the beaten path and still enjoy many of the comforts of home. The Base Station Prototype features a roof-mounted solar array. And its modular design also provides room, should a buyer choose, to mount a lithium-ion battery backup system, rather than having to rely on a generator for power at night or on rainy days. The pack Honda is developing should provide enough justice “to get you through a long weekend,” said Kane. Related: The Idea of a Self-Driving RV Seems To Have Everyone Excited A Package for Everybody The flexibility of the Base Station design could give Honda a let up on the competition which, from a price standpoint runs around $17,000 for a stripped-down version of the Scamp Lite 13’ model to more than $54,000 for a well-equipped version of the Airstream Basecamp 16X. Honda officials haven’t yet set pricing but expect a production model “would be priced competitively in the towable RV market,” Honda’s U.S. sales chief Lance Woelfer said Tuesday during a media conference call. Translation: a stripped-down Base Station would almost certainly start at the low end, though a fully equipped package, especially with the solar array and battery backup system, would climb substantially higher. “We wanted Base Station of be for everybody,” Nakagawa said. Final development work is still underway and Honda hasn’t formally confirmed whether it will actually put the Base Station into production. But listening to individual members of the R&D team leaves little doubt the Japanese manufacturer is itching to get out there with Base Station. "We will share more information in the coming months,”, “including our future intentions" on building Base Station, Woelfer said. 24. Drag Illustrated, Melling Performance, and promoters Tom Gunner and Michael Poland have teamed up to deliver the Lil Gangstas Championship Series presented by Melling Performance for the 2025-26 Drag Illustrated Winter Series presented by J&A Service, race officials announced today. The points champion at the end of the three-race series will earn $10,000 and a sponsorship package from Melling. For over 75 years, Melling has been manufacturing and providing customers with the newest cutting-edge performance engine parts. Melling is a leading manufacturer of aftermarket oil pumps and related products. The Melling Performance line has BILLET Aluminum and Cast Iron oil pumps, camshafts, valve train, and timing components. Their goal is to continually analyze the high-performance engine parts market to be able to provide their valued customers the parts they need. “Melling is looking forward to an outstanding 2026,” said Cale Risinger, Aftermarket and Performance Product Manager. “As a company, Melling will be celebrating its 80th year in business and is one of very few family-owned companies remaining in the engine parts industry. We are excited to be sponsoring one of the fastest growing classes in drag racing, on one of the biggest stages in drag racing. We are also excited to announce that the Lil Gangstas points champion at the Winter Series will be receiving a Melling sponsorship for the remainder of the 2026 racing season.” Lil Gangstas is currently one of the hottest classes in drag racing, featuring heads-up racing on a pro tree, running on a 5.30 index but with the clocks off. Tommy Hoskinson is the current points leader after his $20,000 final-round victory over Gage Burch at the Snowbird Outlaw Nationals presented by Motion Raceworks. For Gunner and Poland, having a highly respected company like Melling on board for the DI Winter Series is another step in the effort to bring their unique grassroots-style brand of drag racing to a mainstream audience. “I remember as a kid watching drag racing and seeing the Melling logo on dang near everything,” said Poland. “All these years later, it’s an honor to have a company that has been behind the racers for decades involved in what we are doing. Having Melling on board for this Lil Gangstas Championship Series is another step for Melling to keep supporting all forms of racing.” Risinger agrees with that statement, praising the duo for not only promoting the working-class drag racers, but celebrating them. At a time when costs are seemingly skyrocketing across the board, helping those drivers and teams that don’t have unlimited budgets is what will allow the sport continued growth and success. Cale Risinger “Melling feels that grass roots-style racing such as Lil Gangstas is very important to the future of motor sports,” Risinger said. “More affordable forms of racing such as Lil Gangstas levels the playing field and allows a larger number of competitors to participate and be competitive. People are far more likely to show up to events knowing they have a chance to win the event, even though they might not have the most expensive car on the property. Giving more participants the ability to race and be competitive is a great thing for the sport of drag racing, and can only lead to its continued growth.” The next race in the Lil Gangstas Championship Series presented by Melling will take place January 23-25 at the U.S. Street Nationals presented by M&M Transmission. The final event will be at the World Series of Pro Mod February 26-28. For more information on Melling’s parts and services, visit www.melling.com. 25. Redefining the LensThe six category winners of this year’s Women’s Worldwide Car of the Year (WWCOTY) have been announced. Before anything else, it’s worth emphasizing that there is no such thing as a “woman’s car” – a point the awarding body itself has long maintained. Rather, the jury is composed entirely of women, giving them a voice in what has traditionally been a male-dominated industry. Now in its 15th edition, this year’s category winners are the Nissan Leaf (Compact Car), Škoda Elroq (Compact SUV), Mercedes-Benz CLA (Large Car), Hyundai Ioniq 9 (Large SUV), Toyota 4Runner (4×4), and Lamborghini Temerario (Exclusive Car). The jury consists of 84 women motoring journalists from 54 countries, and all eligible vehicles – from an initial list of 55 candidates – were required to be produced and sold in at least two continents or 40 countries between January and December 2025. Škoda Electrification With PurposeWWCOTY cited the Nissan Leaf for its “practical approach, offering smooth, quiet driving and outstanding efficiency.” Now in its third generation, introduced last year, the Leaf has evolved from a traditional hatchback into a crossover body style. The Škoda Elroq, meanwhile, is a Czech-built EV that shares its underlying platform with the Volkswagen ID.4. Not sold in the United States, the Elroq earned its category win thanks to its practical interior packaging and aerodynamic improvements, delivering a driving range of over 311 miles under the WLTP test cycle. That roughly aligns with the EPA-rated range of EVs such as the Tesla Model Y RWD, once testing differences are accounted for, with WLTP typically more forgiving. The Mercedes-Benz CLA – which was recently crowned 2026 Car of the Year in Europe – won the Large Car category for its advanced technology, digitalization, and refined driving dynamics. The Hyundai Ioniq 9, on the other hand, was recognized for its “generous interior space, modularity, and a clear focus on comfort for all occupants.” Available in the U.S. market, it competes in the three-row EV segment alongside models such as the Rivian R1S and Cadillac Vistiq. Mercedes Trail Toughness and Supercar TheaterThe remaining two category winners retain internal combustion as the core of their propulsion, setting them apart from the more electrified entries. WWCOTY recognized the Toyota 4Runner for staying true to its traditional SUV roots, combining a 4×4 drivetrain with a body-on-frame chassis. The Lamborghini Temerario, the successor to the Huracán, uses a twin-turbo V8 engine with three electric motors, producing a combined output of up to 907 horsepower. Beyond the category awards, the organization also presented Renault with the Best Tech Award, while Ford received the Sandy Myhre Award, which honors a brand’s commitment to women. The six category winners will now advance to the final round for the overall Car of the Year title, set to be announced in March during the week of International Women’s Day. A month later, the World Car of the Year – a separate organization – is scheduled to reveal its winner on April 1 from a shortlist of 10 finalists, which, like the WWCOTY list, includes the Hyundai Ioniq 9, Mercedes-Benz CLA, and Nissan Leaf.
