Why Some New Cars Look Like Their Taillights Are Off
LED Light Bars Are Taking OverOver the last decade, we’ve seen LED taillight bars on new cars become pretty much the go-to design choice, in the process also becoming one of the most divisive changes in car design. Everyone from Kia to Porsche uses a horizontal strip of LEDs at the rear. Some designs, like on the new Tesla Model Y, take things even further, with a truly unconventional glowing light bar design. So unconventional, in fact, that a Model Y driver was pulled over in Indiana because a policeman believed his taillights were on the fritz. At which point, we have to ask ourselves, have light bar designs gone too far? Tesla View the 2 images of this gallery on the original article The Trick Model Y Light Bar The 2026 Model Y “Juniper” uses what Tesla calls an Indirect Running Light (IRL), which reflects light from the painted surface of the boot. What looks like the top taillight housing doesn’t really work as you would expect. Instead, the horizontal LED light strip hidden under it provides the bulk of the illumination from reflections when you’re driving along. The traditional brake light spots only light up when braking, otherwise remaining dark. Tesla’s chief designer, Franz von Holzhausen, appeared on Jay Leno’s Garage explaining the indirect running light design, stating that the unique, new design was refreshing. Lars Moravy, Vice President Vehicle Engineering at Tesla, stated that federal regulations are based on the amount of lumen output from the surface area of a light (and not necessarily the type of surface), and the Model Y’s running lights meet that requirement. That said, it could still appear to be malfunctioning to someone driving behind a vehicle at night, especially if they are unfamiliar with newer models. Striking Design Choice or Just Confusing? While this issue is isolated to the new Tesla Model Y tail light design, the larger question is whether automobile manufacturers prioritize making vehicles stand out in terms of design versus providing clear and recognizable functionality to the average driver. In this case, Tesla performed its due diligence regarding regulation compliance, but other people on the road may need to play catch-up in terms of getting familiar with how it works. Tesla View the 1 images of this gallery on the original article That shouldn’t be too difficult, seeing as how many cars use light bar designs nowadays, though Hyundai design chief Simon Loasby certainly thinks it’s a design trend that’s played out. In the meantime, maybe manufacturers can innovate with lighting design, just as long as they serve their main purpose: as safety equipment that increases visibility, not confusion. Mugen’s Wild Honda Prelude Body Kit Is So Exclusive It Requires a Lottery
You may not be able to get the new Honda Prelude with anything more than a 200-horsepower hybrid powertrain, but you can always make it look quicker than it is. Nobody is better for that job than Honda tuning company Mugen, known for outfitting both everyday and high-performance Hondas with aggressive body kits and aerodynamic components. Mugen unveiled its body kit for the Prelude last year, and now we have pricing, the full selection of parts, and availability for the kit. The bad news? It’s ultra-exclusive and only available for purchase via a lottery system. Related: Oh No — Honda Prelude Isn't As Quick As Expected Type R Looks—Without The Performance Honda Prelude with Mugen parts Mugen View the 4 images of this gallery on the original article Mugen’s body kit works well on the Prelude, which is already a rather dashing coupe in standard form. Known as the SPEC.III, the body kit includes the following carbon parts: Front under spoilerSide garnishSide skirtsRear under spoilerRear under diffuserTailgate spoilerDoor mirror coversCustomers will also get a sports exhaust system, although we’re not sure how exciting a four-cylinder hybrid can be made to sound. A serial plate number is included, too, and Mugen also has Yamaha-tuned dampers and special brake pads available separately. With all the extras and special wheels, the SPEC.III would do a Type R badge proud, if such a Prelude ever became available. A bigger spoiler and a triple-exit exhaust system would bring it even closer to the visual drama of the Civic Type R. Mugen The SPEC.III kit costs ¥1,650,000 (around $10,500) on its own, but adding the performance hardware could set you back a lot more, as the stainless steel sports exhaust is $2,170 alone, while the 19-inch forged BBS wheels cost around $4,500. Related: Honda Prelude Battles Muscle Car and Budget Sedan for Car of the Year Crown Limited To Just 16 Sets Honda Prelude with Mugen parts Mugen View the 3 images of this gallery on the original article Mugen will only be developing 16 SPEC.III sets, an exceptionally limited number, especially considering how many Preludes have already been sold in Japan. The chances of getting one of these kits become even slimmer since a lottery system is in place to decide who can purchase one. This begins with an application via Honda dealers in Japan, which are open between January 9 and February 27. The 16 lucky winners will be announced on March 19, but shipping only begins on June 19. For anyone outside Japan, it’ll be nearly impossible to secure one of these Mugen kits, although individual parts are still available to order. Honda itself offers only minimal customization of the Prelude’s design in the United States. You can specify special 19-inch gloss black machined alloys for $2,156, while a tailgate spoiler is $500 and an underbody front spoiler goes for $350. There’s also a Two-Tone trim with a black roof and mirrors, costing $2,500 more than the already pricey standard model ($42,000). View the full article

DIY Tool Restoration: Restoring a Vintage Hydraulic Jack that survived a Fire! Jacks Are Simple, Right?
I love it when you can restore an old tool. Anything that still serves a purpose and can be useful in the shop or garage is always good, and sometimes these small projects are just what you need to get a break from your bigger projects. So when Brent at Half Ass Kustoms put out this new video of him restoring an old long reach, high lift, floor jack that had sort of survived the shop fire he had in 2024, I knew I was going to dig it. It sort of worked after the fire, but jacks that sort of work are the worst kind of jacks. I know from experience, and I’m assuming some of you do too. So check out the restoration video and let us know what you think. I’ve got an old jack or two that are going to need some love before too long, so maybe this is the inspiration I need. Video Description: In this video we restore a high lift jack that survived the fire. You can’t buy them anymore so we’re bringing this one back to life! Mazda's New Electric SUV Has a 26-Inch Screen But There's a Catch With the Range
From Mazda6e to CX-6eA year after Mazdaintroduced the Mazda6e in Europe, it’s back with a similar formula, this time in a body style that’s more likely to catch on. The original 6e, also known as the EZ-6 in China, was essentially the classic Mazda6 sedan reworked for the EV age. It kept things simple: clean lines, a minimalist look, and a cabin dominated by screens to show Mazda was serious about electric cars. Now Mazda has taken that base and turned it into the CX-6e, a mid-size electric crossover that goes up against big names like the Tesla Model Y and Audi Q6 e-tron. Like the 6e, it’s built in China with Changan, then tweaked for Europe before launch. Mazda isn’t replacing anything here; instead, the CX-6e is meant to sit alongside the 6e as another option in its expanding EV lineup. Mazda Familiar Design, Tech-Heavy CabinThe Mazda CX-6e looks like a bigger, taller version of the brand’s current Kodo design. Short overhangs, wide wheel arches, and slim lights keep it from feeling oversized. Higher trims get digital side mirrors and other aero tweaks, but nothing about the design screams "EV" at first glance. The CX-6e’s cabin looks open and uncluttered, with an obvious focus on space. The main event is a 26-inch ultra-wide touchscreen that stretches across the dash, backed up by a head-up display and just a handful of physical buttons. Materials are claimed to be upmarket, with vegan upholstery, ambient lighting, and a panoramic glass roof all standard. There’s plenty of tech, like the cleverly integrated wing-mirror camera display into the dashboard layout. Mazda A Slightly Disappointing RangeUnder the skin, the CX-6e runs a 78 kWh lithium-iron phosphate battery and a rear motor good for 258 hp and 214 lb-ft of torque. It’s not a rocket, with a 0-62 mph time of 7.9 seconds. Fast charging tops out at 195 kW, so you can go from 10 to 80 percent in about 24 minutes with the right charger. Mazda claims up to 484 kilometers (about 300 miles) of range on the WLTP cycle. On paper, that looks solid, but the Tesla Model Y Standard and Audi Q6 e-tron both post at least 321 miles on the tougher EPA test. Expect the CX-6e’s real-world range to come in lower if it ever makes it to the US. Europe gets it first in 2026, and a US launch is still up in the air, especially since it’s built in China and the market demand is changing fast. The Most Expensive 2027 Chevrolet Bolt Costs More Than a Tesla Model Y
Chevy’s Affordable EV Reenters the MarketThe 2027 Chevrolet Bolt is reportedly beginning to arrive at dealerships, with build configurations visible for buyers considering the returning all-electric hatchback. What immediately stands out about the new Bolt is its pricing position. It is currently among the cheapest electric vehicles available in the U.S., carrying a starting sticker price of $28,995 (including destination fees). As standard, the Bolt delivers an EPA-estimated driving range of 262 miles. Notably, this figure exceeds General Motors’ initial estimates (255 miles) and surpasses both the previous Bolt EV (259 miles) and the Bolt EUV (247 miles). General Motors Equipment ListThe latest-generation Bolt is also offered exclusively in front-wheel-drive (FWD). While this setup lacks the added traction of an all-wheel-drive (AWD) system, it helps keep costs down, which is one of the key reasons the model remains competitively priced. Other standard equipment across the board includes 210 horsepower, a 65 kWh battery pack, an 11-inch digital instrument cluster, and an 11.3-inch diagonal infotainment touchscreen with Google built in. Chevrolet offers all six exterior paint options in the base Bolt LT at no extra charge, including Relic Green Metallic, which is scheduled to arrive at a later date. Meanwhile, most optional features are grouped into packages. The Technology Package ($1,695) adds upgrades such as HD Surround Vision, a wireless phone charger, and a rear pedestrian alert system. Buyers can also opt for the Dual Panel Sunroof Package ($1,695), which adds a power tilt and sliding front sunroof glass and a power sunshade. For drivers seeking more advanced driver-assistance tech, Chevy offers the Super Cruise Package ($3,255), which enables hands-free driving on compatible highways. Chevrolet The Cost of Checking Every BoxAt the top of the lineup sits the Bolt RS, which starts at $32,995. This trim exclusively offers the Atomic Yellow exterior color option, adding $395 to the sticker price. Standard RS features include 17-inch gloss black painted aluminum wheels, paired with a gloss black grille and roof rails that reinforce the trim's sporty theme. When fully optioned—with additions such as the PowerShift Charging Package ($2,371), All-Weather Package ($375), and 3-Year MobileService+ plan ($599) – the Bolt RS can reach a price of roughly $43,000, or roughly $3,000 more than the Tesla Model Y Standard. In comparison, the Nissan Leaf, widely regarded as the Bolt’s closest EV rival, starts at $31,485 including destination. That affordability advantage, however, may soon be short-lived. Several automakers like Ford are actively developing new EVs aimed at sub-$30,000 price points. Slate Auto, for example, has targeted a mid-$20,000 starting price for its upcoming electric pickup, making the Bolt’s return feel well-timed. Hyundai's Futuristic 9-Seater Staria Minivan Goes Full Electric
Sci-Fi Styling Now a Full EVWhen Hyundaifirst showed the Staria in 2021, it was hard to miss. The clean lines, huge windows, and wide light bar made it look like an EV. It was, however, still running on combustion engines at the time. Now, Hyundai has closed that gap. The Staria is finally available as a full EV, pairing its futuristic design with zero-emission power. The Staria Electric made its debut at the Brussels Motor Show as Hyundai’s new flagship minivan. It keeps the updated look from the latest combustion models, but now the design finally matches what’s under the hood. Hyundai is aiming this at families, shuttle operators, and anyone who needs space and efficiency in equal measure. Instead of trying to reinvent the minivan, they’ve just brought a modern one up to date. Hyundai Familiar Shape, Smarter SpaceThe Staria Electric sticks close to the original formula. The one-curve shape, low beltline, and big windows are all still here. The main EV changes are up front, with a closed grille, cleaner surfaces, and a single light bar that stretches across the nose. Sliding doors and a wide rear opening make it easy to get people or cargo in and out, even when space is tight. Size-wise, the Staria Electric is in a different class from the Volkswagen ID. Buzz. At about 207 inches long and with a 129-inch wheelbase, it’s a true full-size van. The ID. Buzz is much shorter, even in its long-wheelbase version. Both are just over 78 inches wide, but the Staria is also a bit taller, which adds to its van-like feel. Inside, the Staria EV features a flat floor, a high roof, and a lounge-style layout. You can get it as a 7-seater Luxury or a 9-seater Wagon, so it works for families or commercial use. The dashboard is dominated by two 12.3-inch screens, but there are still physical buttons for the basics. There’s plenty of storage, flexible seating, and huge windows, all of which help the Staria keep its title as one of the roomiest vans around. Hyundai Probably Not for AmericaUnder the floor is an 84-kWh battery and a 215-horsepower motor driving the front wheels. Thanks to Hyundai’s 800-volt system, you can charge from 10 to 80 percent in about 20 minutes if conditions are right. Range is up to 250 miles on the more forgiving WLTP cycle. The Staria Electric can tow up to 4,400 pounds and has Vehicle-to-Load, so you can power gadgets or tools straight from the van. Hyundai says the Staria Electric will go on sale in Korea and Europe in the first half of 2026, with more markets to follow. A US launch isn’t ruled out, but with Americans still leaning toward SUVs over minivans, it’s hard to say whether it will make it here. Of note, the ID. Buzz, which VW reportedly stopped selling toward the end of last year, only sold just over 6,100 units in 2025, so saying there’s a demand for an electric minivan in America would be a stretch. Will Smith Talks New Full-Time NHRA Top Fuel Opportunity with SCAG Racing
Will Smith wrapped up the 2025 season not knowing exactly what his 2026 season would look like. After hoisting an IHRA Ironman in Top Alcohol Dragster over the summer and making his Nitro Funny Car debut to close out the season, Smith had established himself as a proven wheelman in the nitro ranks. Randy Gloede and the folks at SCAG Racing took notice of Smith’s initiative on and off the track over the last several years, and now Smith’s 2026 outlook is clear. He’s set to run his first-ever full NHRA Mission Foods Series season as the driver of the new Bluebird Turf Top Fuel dragster. Smith, who earned his Top Fuel license in 2022 driving Larry Dixon’s dragster, will drive what is now the fourth nitro entry out of the SCAG Racing stable, joining Justin Ashley in Top Fuel and Daniel Wilkerson and Dave Richards in Funny Car. Glen Huszar will serve as crew chief, and the Bluebird Turf Top Fuel team will work closely with Ashley, crew chief Tommy DeLago, and the SCAG Power Equipment Top Fuel team. “It was a life-changing text from Randy, that’s for sure,” Smith said the day after SCAG Racing announced the new program on Jan. 8. “It still doesn’t seem real. I’m still pinching myself. To know that I have a full-time ride with a great team of drivers, great team of individuals, a great organization, it just doesn’t seem real. The one goal I had in life was to drive a Top Fuel car full-time and make a career out of it. This is that opportunity that I’ve worked for and prayed for my whole life, and now it’s finally happening. I think when we pull into Gainesville, that’s when everything will sink in.” Smith has been preparing for this opportunity for years. His driving resume includes a four-year stretch in the Hirata Motorsports A/Fuel dragster before his Top Fuel licensing with Dixon. He made his debut at the 2022 NHRA U.S. Nationals, where he was one of the 10 drivers who didn’t make the field. He returned a year later and qualified for the Big Go. Most recently, he ran a few races driving Luigi Novelli’s Top Fuel dragster. He’s driven for and crewed for the Samsel family in NHRA and IHRA Top Alcohol Dragster as well, winning in both series. Smith also earned his Funny Car license with Paul Smith early in 2025, and he put it to use in November when he made his Funny Car debut at the IHRA Outlaw Nitro Series season finale driving for Mark Herzhauser. I wanted to hold both licenses to be as versatile as possible for any opportunities that may arise,” Smith said. “I’m willing and able and have the desire to drive anything that burns nitro.” Beyond the opportunity to race Top Fuel on a full-time basis, Smith is fired up about the chance to work with the whole SCAG Racing team. As a longtime marketing specialist in the sport, he recognizes that Gloede has put together a special program with the SCAG Power Equipment and Bluebird Turf teams, which host hundreds of employees, customers, and retailers throughout the NHRA season. “I’m just I’m really looking forward to the opportunity to be a part of SCAG Racing and work for Randy [Gloede] and Maria [Oldenburg] and their whole team,” Smith said. “As it says on all their cars, their employees make the difference. I’m just so happy to be a part of an American-made brand, and we share the same core values. People are most important, and I’m just really excited to represent their organization and to work with the talented roster of drivers, crew chiefs, and crew members.” Smith pointed out that he wouldn’t be in this position if it weren’t for the long list of supporters and mentors who played a part in his career to this point. “I definitely want to thank the ‘band of brothers’ – that’s everyone who’s helped me along the way and they all know who they are,” Smith said. “They helped me through the Top Alcohol ranks and when Larry Dixon and I started racing Top Fuel together. I want to thank Tommy and Judy Franklin with the PDRA for the job they’ve given me for the last 10 years. That helped pave the way for me to be able to race, as well as create and build upon a lot of relationships in the industry. I also want to thank the Hiratas, the Samsels, Larry Dixon, Luigi Novelli, Mark Herzhauser, and all of our sponsors that have helped me up to this point. The late Bill Mullins was also a personal hero of mine growing up and helped make my move to Top Fuel possible. Of course, I also have to thank my family for all of their support and encouragement over the years.” Smith also noted that current sponsors SP Tools USA and Red Line Oil will join him at SCAG Racing. It’s been just over 24 hours since the announcement came out, and Smith is still catching up on all of the congratulatory messages he’s received. It’s given him a chance to reflect on the opportunities that led to this dream come true. “I wasn’t sure if I’d ever get this opportunity, but I’ve tried to do the right thing in the right ways and learn from the best and work with great people,” Smith said. “I’ve had some great friends and mentors along the way that have helped me, encouraged me, and given me proper resources along the way to help get me to the next step and it’s finally, finally coming together.” This story was originally published on January 9, 2026. Jim Halsey Planning Incredible Return For U.S. Street Nationals
After a horrific crash last month at the Snowbird Outlaw Nationals presented by Motion Raceworks, nobody would have blamed four-time PDRA Pro Nitrous world champion Jim Halsey if he missed the final two races of the 2025/2026 Drag Illustrated Winter Series presented by J&A Service. Halsey admitted that in the moments immediately following the wreck, he wondered if he should step away from racing. But sitting back and watching simply isn’t in his DNA. He and his team have been thrashing ever since the incident to be able to return to Bradenton Motorsports Park January 23-25 for the U.S. Street Nationals presented by M&M Transmission. “My initial reaction afterwards was I was done,” Halsey said. “I’m not the youngest guy in the in the world, and this is two cars in two years. So my first thought was that maybe it’s time to retire. But after I cooled off a little bit and got home, we were already discussing how to get things back together. The phone calls started the next morning. Everybody between (tuner) Brandon [Switzer], the folks at [Jerry] Bickel’s shop, and my guys, they put a plan together. They picked the car up on Tuesday or Wednesday after the race and took it to Bickel’s for repair.” Piloting his brand-new nitrous-fed “Blacklist” ‘68 Camaro, the 2021 U.S. Street Nationals winner and 2024 World Series of Pro Mod runner-up was involved in a top-end crash with Jeff Rudolf during the second Pro Mod qualifying session at the Snowbirds that saw both drivers impact the retaining walls in the shutdown area. It was a tough ending to what started out looking like a promising weekend. Halsey ran a 3.605 at 210.67 mph in the first qualifying session, placing him in the No. 4 spot out of 80 cars. Heading into Q2, with the sun down and cooler temperatures in the air, he appeared primed to improve even more. “That thing of mine was on a pretty good run,” said Halsey. “It was probably going to run a 3.57 or .58. It just kept driving left. I kept my foot in it as long as I could. I saw he was out in front of me, so when I got out of it, I switched lanes and was just going to clear the quarter-mile cones and get back over…and that’s when all the other stuff started happening. “I hit the brakes, because he was right in front of me and the last thing I wanted to do was hit him,” Halsey added regarding Rudolf. “The bottom of his car turned around pretty quick on me and I slammed the brakes. It’s possible it could have been avoided. Without rehashing it too much, it’s hard to say. It happened so quick.” With the U.S. Street Nationals just over a month away, time was of the essence to get the car repaired in time. Luckily, Halsey already had a spare body and front end ready to go. That, along with the damage not being as bad as they first feared, allowed the team to truly believe they could be ready to go in January. “The car wasn’t as damaged as bad as it initially looked,” said Halsey. “When I wrecked my other car at Galot in 2024, I bought a body anticipating that we would either try to repair that car or expedite the construction of a new car – but we never ended up using that body. I just had to get it delivered out to Bickel’s shop. It wasn’t even a complete front half. All the brake and suspension parts were pretty much reusable. I mean, it was a major repair, but it wasn’t as bad as we originally thought.” Now, with everything on track to be ready to go for the U.S. Street Nationals, Halsey is ready to prove once again that nitrous cars can be competitive against the best Pro Mods in the world. He realizes his power adder of choice requires just a little more time, effort, and innovation to stay near the top, but it’s a challenge he and Switzer embrace. “Based on our performances prior to the accident – not only in Bradenton, but at the Yellowbullet Nationals and testing earlier last year – I feel that we can run at the top of the field, or very close to it,” Halsey said. “My guys are ready and willing to put in the work that it takes to do that. Not only the work at the track, but the work at the shop between races, working on the car to get things where they need to be to make it competitive. That’s the bottom line.” This story was originally published on January 9, 2026. The post Jim Halsey Planning Incredible Return For U.S. Street Nationals first appeared on Drag Illustrated. American Communications Construction, Aloha Beauty Lounge Extend Primary Sponsorship With Tony Schumacher Through 2032
Texas-based American Communications Construction (ACC) and Aloha Beauty Lounge have each extended its primary sponsorship of NHRA Top Fuel driver Tony Schumacher and the No. 15 Top Fuel dragster he pilots for Rick Ware Racing (RWR) through the 2032 NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series season. This long-term agreement will have the winningest Top Fuel driver in NHRA history in a 12,000-horsepower dragster for a fourth decade, allowing Schumacher to add to his 88 event wins and series-best eight championships. “This commitment allows us to be strategic and make the necessary investments in procuring the best and brightest crew, team leadership and equipment that will allow us to compete for championships beginning in 2026,” said Schumacher, a 2025 Motorsports Hall of Fame of America inductee. ACC and Aloha partnered with RWR and Schumacher for the final seven races of 2025, debuting in the NHRA U.S. Nationals. “My wife, Summer, and I have gotten to know American Communications Construction president Aven McBride, and his wife Tracey, and their incredible employees, all last season when we first partnered together. It was quickly apparent how well we all got along, and had the same goals and ideals about family, business and enjoying life,” Schumacher said. “Anyone who knows the McBrides all say the same thing – that they’re kind, philanthropic, driven people who care about their employees and the success of their respective companies. They love to have fun and win, which is what this race team is all about. It makes for a perfect match. I’m excited for the future.” Schumacher will have veteran tuner Jim Oberhofer as his crew chief, and a strong teammate in Top Fuel driver Clay Millican, the winningest driver in IHRA history and a six-time IHRA champion. “This long-term partnership with Tony Schumacher and American Communications Construction allows our Top Fuel program to compete at the highest level. It provides continuity and confidence for our entire operation,” said team owner Rick Ware. “Pairing Tony with Clay Millican gives us one of the most experienced driver lineups in NHRA. Both of them raise the bar every time we unload and they’re integral to the success of our race team.” McBride, owner and president of American Communications Construction, is adamant this multiyear commitment will pay dividends on the racetrack. “We’re building this team into one that is a threat to win at every race we enter, and this extension shows our commitment to doing just that. We can keep our focus on having the best people and getting all the parts and pieces we need to make this ACC/Aloha Top Fuel dragster go fast and straight down the track,” McBride said. “Tracey and I are committed to our driver, Tony Schumacher. His records are unmatched, and he has many more wins and championships to come. We want to be part of that, and our employees at ACC and Aloha love racing, and they want to be a part of it too. It’s a natural fit for our family to be a part of this racing family. “Rick Ware Racing is a class-act organization, and we have the best of everything. The best team, the best driver, the best crew chief – we have it all. We’re excited to get to Gainesville and get the season started.” The NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series kicks off its milestone 75th season with the NHRA Gatornationals March 5-8 at Gainesville (Fla.) 2026 Shelby American Super Snake Turns the Ford Mustang Into an 830-HP Monster
While we patiently wait for the Detroit Auto Show to roll around so we can see what Ford is cooking (is it a new Mustang Cobra or Boss?), Shelby American has taken the liberty of giving us something that could be just as exciting: the 2026 Shelby American Super Snake. A name first introduced in 1966 on a big block Cobra and then the following year in a high-performance Mustang, the Super Snake is Shelby American's longest-running Ford Mustang model, and for the new year, it doesn't mess with a winning recipe. You get less weight, more power, and an MSRP that means you can buy two for the price of one well-specced Mustang GTD. And as usual, the Super Snake can be had in either fastback or convertible flavor. To Supercharge or Not to Supercharge? That Is the Question Shelby American The S650-based Super Snake builds on the GT's 5.0-liter Coyote V8, which comes standard with 480 horsepower, but if you opt for the supercharger, more than 830 hp is possible on 93 octane fuel. Helping achieve that are an upgraded radiator and heat exchanger, a Borla exhaust system, and performance half shafts. Unlike Ford's 815-hp GTD, the Super Snake treatment can be applied to cars with automatic or manual transmissions (the latter of which get a short-throw shifter with a Shelby shifter ball), and it could be rarer, too. While some sources say the GTD will be capped at 1,700 units, Shelby American is limiting production of the Super Snake (which has already started in Las Vegas) to just 300 units, though a few more may be made by approved third parties. Shelby American Other upgrades include hardened wheel studs and new lug nuts, an upgraded suspension setup, better brake rotors, and 20-inch forged magnesium wheels with sticky rubber. Inside, you also get recovered seats, embroidered floor mats, Shelby puddle lamps, Super Snake door sill plates, a serialized dash plaque and engine plaque, and new caps in the engine bay. Convertibles will also be fitted with a new light bar. Less Weight, For Both the Super Snake and Buyers' Wallets Shelby American View the 3 images of this gallery on the original article Although Shelby American doesn't provide a new curb weight figure, it touts a lower mass thanks to the aforementioned wheels, a new aluminum hood, and carbon fiber fenders. The latter are vented like the pinned hood and widen the car, requiring a new front fascia with revised grilles, and to drive home the point that this isn't a regular Mustang GT, the Super Snake benefits from a supported front splitter, carbon fiber splitter wickers, new side rockers with carbon fiber wickers, a ducktail rear spoiler, a carbon fiber rear diffuser, and Super Snake stripes and badges. Coupes also get a carbon fiber rear wing, and the cars get legally tinted windows. Finally, those who want their tuned pony car to have even more power can order an Orange Fury paint job. That's if they have money left over; while the 2026 Shelby American Super Snake is far more affordable than a Mustang GTD, it still costs $175,885 (including a 3-year/36,000-mile warranty and the base Ford Mustang). That's more than a 1,064-hp Corvette ZR1. Just saying... Shelby American View the 2 images of this gallery on the original article View the full article

Volvo Is Bringing Back the Designer Who Defined Its Modern Look
It’s unlikely for a company to rehire someone they let go, but Volvo seems to think differently, as they always do. Thomas Ingenlath, the designer responsible for the Volvo XC90 SUV and the beautiful V90 wagon, is coming back as the company’s Chief Design Officer. If you didn’t know, he previously served as Polestar’s CEO, where he was largely responsible for the brand’s independent rise to fame. During his seven-year stint as company executive, the marque saw its fortunes change from being a Volvo sub-brand to finding a spot in the global performance EV space. Volvo In a press release, CEO Håkan Samuelsson shared his enthusiasm for the designer’s return back to Volvo, saying, “Thomas Ingenlath will strengthen our design leadership with his proven experience and vision, ensuring we continue to design cars that reflect our values and resonate with customers around the world.” He further added, “Design is one of Volvo Cars’ greatest strengths and will continue to differentiate us in shaping the future of premium, electric mobility.” Ingenlath is excited to be back, adding, “I am delighted to be returning to Volvo Cars. Design is fundamental to what Volvo stands for. I look forward to working closely with the teams across the company, developing cars that are distinct, relevant and true to the Volvo brand.” Volvo What is certain is that Volvo’s minimalist design ethos shall remain intact for years to come. Although the Scandinavian identity is embedded in modern Volvo cars, it’s beginning to lose its shine. These are indeed testing times for the company, evident from the brand’s domestic and international sales figures. Volvo has seen a steep sales decline in key markets, including the U.S. and China. While 2023 and 2024 saw a robust jump in sales after the pandemic-driven slump, 2025 has been tough with demand falling and tariffs taking a toll on sales numbers. The whole “electrified” shift by 2030 is also going to be challenging, as many OEMs are backing out of their EV plans, citing questionable demand and profitability concerns. Will Ingenlath’s design magic give future Volvos the boost they need? Only time will tell. View the full article

Kia EV2 Debuts with Clever Seating, Impressive Range, and Numerous Options
Meet Kia's smallest and cheapest EV yet. We say 'yet' because it's called the EV2, suggesting that the South Korean automaker is leaving room for another, smaller vehicle to be introduced somewhere down the line, but we digress. The EV2 is a B-segment, or subcompact, electric crossover, and it'll be available in a choice of five trims when it goes on sale later this year, including a sportily styled GT-Line variant. More importantly than its variety is Kia's claim that the EV2 will deliver best-in-class ranges on the WLTP cycle of up to 317 and 448 kilometers, or 197 and 278 miles, from its two battery options, 42.2 kWh and 61.0 kWh. Charging shouldn't be terrible, either, with both 11kW and 22kW AC charging supported. The 400-volt architecture also supports DC fast charging, with the smaller battery capable of being replenished in as little as 29 minutes and the bigger battery taking a full half-hour. EV2 Miniaturizes Kia's Design Language Kia View the 4 images of this gallery on the original article Like the EV6 and EV9, the EV2 is styled with Kia's "Opposites United" styling philosophy, so it gets boomerang-shaped LED headlights with vertical daytime running lights, which Kia calls the Star Map Light Signature. Like those other EVs, it also wears squared wheel arch moldings and boasts a shoulder line with angular steps down into those fenders. Within the wheelhouses of the EV2 will be rims ranging in size from 16 to 19 inches, and the GT-Line variant will add to the chic design with body-colored accents and glossy elements on the bumper and lower front grille. And even though this is a small crossover, numerous paint finishes will be offered, including solid, metallic, pearl, and matte. Kia Kia EV2 trims: EV2 Air: 16" alloy wheels, 6-speaker sound system, roof rails, dual-zone climate controlEV2 First Edition: 18" wheels, privacy glass, ambient lighting, Harman Kardon Premium sound system, Highway Driving Assist 2.0EV2 GT-Line: 19" wheels, three-spoke GT-Line steering wheel, metal pedals, driver lumbar support, wireless smartphone chargingEV2 GT-Line S: TBAEV2 Black Edition: TBA (presumably, several gloss black accents and wheels)Kia EV2 Gets a Cheerful Interior Kia View the 4 images of this gallery on the original article There's a charming "Hello" message with a smiley face on the top of the driver's door cards, and inside the door handles is another message: "Have a nice day." In a small car like this, it adds a certain appeal, but based on the images, the low-cost construction doesn't mean a vast differentiation from current, larger Kia EVs. Fabric upholstery and cladding give a premium feel, as does a wraparound dashboard, within which sits Kia's newest triple-screen ccNC infotainment system. This includes a 12.3-inch driver display, a 5.3-inch climate control screen, and a 12.3-inch central touchscreen for media. Kia also touts the use of eco-friendly materials in this cabin, but most buyers will be more interested in practicality. A sliding and reclining rear seat system (in four-seat configuration; a standard five-seater bench setup is also available) allows rear legroom to switch from 885 to a segment-leading 958 millimeters. Related: The Average New Car Price Is Now Over $50k In The US, And EVs Are To Blame That's almost 38 inches, and the EV2's cargo carrying capacity is impressive for its size, too, with 14.2 cubic feet behind the rear seats plus another 0.52 cubes in the frunk. Unfortunately, we have to admire the EV2 from afar as it's built in Europe for Europeans. Standard-range models enter production in February, with long-range and GT-Line models following from June. Expect pricing to start around €30,000, or roughly $35,000. Kia View the 5 images of this gallery on the original article View the full article

Alfa Romeo Built an Ultra-Rare Giulia Quadrifoglio With Five Times More Downforce
Perhaps Alfa Romeo and Maserati shouldn't work together. A few weeks ago, the two famed Italian brands joined forces to launch the Bottegafuoriserie project, intended to "combine the core competencies of both brands in the areas of design, development, and manufacturing," including the creation of limited-edition models, and their first such project is this, the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio 'Luna Rossa,' Italian for 'red moon.' The special edition will be limited to just 10 examples worldwide, making it rarer than the GTAm (500 units) and second only to the one-off Giulia SWB, which was built by Zagato. This means very few people will ever subject their eyes to the visual assault that comes with a car inspired by boat racing. Unfortunately, it's also slower than the sports sedan it's based upon, so those who do lay eyes on it will have to do so for longer. Aerodynamic Elements Fit for a Sailboat Stellantis The Giulia Quadrifoglio Luna Rossa was revealed at the Brussels Motor Show, although its tacked-on appendages mean it would look right at home at the Tokyo Auto Salon. The Bottegafuoriserie team collaborated with the Italian America's Cup team Luna Rossa, hence the name, and the car they've joined forces to create boasts numerous carbon fiber add-ons that promise improved aerodynamic performance. Guide vanes on the sides of the front bumper reduce front-end lift, generating 40% of the total downforce, while two elements added to the underbody accelerate the air under the car, with carbon fiber side skirt extensions contributing to additional ground effect downforce. Stellantis View the 4 images of this gallery on the original article On the trunk, a two-piece rear wing is inspired by the foils of the Luna Rossa watercraft, with a design flipped 180 degrees compared to the boat to create additional downforce rather than reduce hydrodynamic drag. In total, Alfa Romeo claims approximately 140 kilograms (308.6 lbs) of downforce, roughly five times more than a regular Giulia Quadrifoglio. For the record, the highly desirable GTAm generates up to 661 lbs. Luna Rossa Is Slower Than a Regular Giulia Quadrifoglio Stellantis View the 2 images of this gallery on the original article All of that downforce means it's more difficult for the Luna Rossa to scythe through the air, bringing its top speed down to 186 mph, roughly 4 mph less than a regular Giulia Quadrifoglio. To be fair, the ultra-focused Giulia GTAm also tops out at the 186-mph mark, though that car has more power than this; the GTAm makes 533 horsepower, and the Luna Rossa edition matches the car it's based on with 513 ponies. But owners will have plenty to talk about besides power, like the hand-painted body. This is finished in grey, with "some vehicles" getting a black hood, roof, and trunk lid. Without the black, the car would arguably be prettier, especially since the roof is made of carbon fiber, like the front emblem and mirror caps. Stellantis View the 3 images of this gallery on the original article Other highlights include red side stripes and Luna Rossa lettering, red Alfa Romeo badges (a first for the brand), and red-painted 19-inch wheels, mimicking a red moon. Inside, the Sparco seats get reupholstered with materials and graphics inspired by the life jackets worn by the crew of the racing yacht, and the dashboard trim features an ultra-thin film made of the same material as the boat's sail. Finally, more carbon is scattered around the cabin, and the center console and seat shells get Luna Rossa logos. All 10 are sold out, but this won't be the last time the Bottegafuoriserie team creates a limited-run model. Hopefully, the next one will be more elegant, as befits an Italian design house. Honda Brings Its Racing Division to Road Cars With New HRC Models
A Passion For DrivingThere are very few automotive brands that can say they were born out of a passion for driving – Honda is one of them. Throughout its history, it has produced models that are iconic for their outstanding driving performance. Doubling down on that idea, Honda has chosen to showcase its passion once more by displaying multiple models and concepts reflecting its love for driving in various forms. Its most recent stage was the 2026 Tokyo Auto Salon (TAS). Honda Sports DNAIntroduced during the show are two new, distinct lines, called the "Sport Line" for on-road vehicles and the "Trail Line" for off-road vehicles. These new lines embody "the future direction of Honda automobile products that inherit the Honda Sports DNA carried forward since the company’s founding." Backing up this announcement, the automaker said that these new sports models will bear the Honda Racing Corporation (HRC) name as HRC-spec models. Highlighting the "Sport Line" models are the Civic Type R HRC Concept and the Prelude HRC Concept. The former will have new HRC technologies coming from feedback from HRC race car drivers, while the latter will soon have HRC-specific parts to enhance performance. Honda sums up the "Sport Line" as “joy of driving at the will of the driver." The "Trail Line" was highlighted by the Passport Trailsport Elite (The North American version was displayed as a reference). This model is what the brand regards as their top-tier off-roading vehicle, and the concept is a representation of that. Also part of the "Trail Line" showcase are the TrailSport HRC concepts, which are dressed-up SUVs from the lineup, consisting of the CR-V TrailSport HRC Concept, ZR-V TrailSport HRC Concept, Vezel TrailSport HRC Concept, and WR-V TrailSport HRC Concept. All are set to embody the key learnings HRC has gained from off-road racing. View the 6 images of this gallery on the original article Honda Civic e:HEV RS PrototypeAnother treat by the brand was the display of the soon-to-be-launched Honda Civic e:HEV RS. This is the sportier version of the hybrid Civic and will be equipped with the new Honda S+ Shift control technology, the first car outside the Prelude to get it. While not bound for production, the on-display design pays homage to the Civic that competed and claimed the championship of the All-Japan Touring Car Championship race 30 years ago. It is set to be sold in Japan by the end of 2026. View the full article

2026 Mazda CX-5’s Gorgeous New Color Builds on Decades of Iconic Blues
For years now, Mazda has set itself apart from mainstream rivals with vehicles that feature more premium designs and upscale interior materials. Mazda’s premium aspirations have also been evident in the brand’s use of vehicle colors. The gorgeous Soul Red Crystal is Mazda’s signature color, but there are several others that bring the brand’s vehicles to life. A new one has just been introduced, that being Navy Blue Mica. Launching on the new generation of the CX-5, it’s yet another beautiful addition to Mazda’s color palette. Mazda and Iconic Blues Go Way Back Mazda Whether the CX-5 is parked directly in the light or in the shadows, Navy Blue Mica has been designed to create a gorgeous visual effect. Many mica particles of different kinds have been blended horizontally, delivering color, precision, and contrast in any light condition. Navy Blue Mica evolved from Deep Crystal Blue Mica, which is still available on the outgoing CX-5. While the Soul Red shade has become Mazda’s signature color, it has a long history of using blue hues. In the 1960s, Mazda’s first passenger car, the R360 kei car, was offered with an Impulse Blue finish. Around a decade later, Mazda Blue was the choice for the company’s corporate symbol. Over 150 colors with the word “blue” in it have been used for various Mazdas through the decades, and it was a blue shade that was used when the first-generation CX-5 was originally launched over a decade ago. 2013 Mazda CX-5 M View the 2 images of this gallery on the original article Other stunning colors available for the current CX-5 include Zircon Sand Metallic, an earthy shade that is inspired by nature and evokes a more rugged look. A more contemporary finish is Polymetal Gray Metallic, which appears as a blend of gray, silver, and blue. Related: Funky or Fun? Automakers and Their Interesting Names for Colors New CX-5 Expected Imminently Mazda The 2026 Mazda CX-5 will go on sale imminently in the United States. The evolutionary design isn’t a massive departure from the outgoing model, but the interior is completely different. It substitutes Mazda’s traditional physical controls with a large touchscreen that manages almost all functions. Mazda hasn’t confirmed the exterior and interior colors of the 2026 model, but we expect options like black, red, and Terracotta inside. Lighter interior shades should contrast especially well with the new Navy Blue Mica paint, should that color be offered in this market. The new CX-5 will initially be offered with a familiar 2.5-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine producing 187 horsepower, but a hybrid will become available in 2027. Mazda has not mentioned the return of the potent turbocharged model, and it has also stuck with the reliable six-speed automatic transmission. Although its mechanicals don’t break new ground, the new CX-5 will likely be a more upscale offering than most rivals, just as the outgoing model was. Genesis Simplifies the G80 for 2026 and Adds a Stealthy Black Edition
Genesis has given the G80 a focused refresh for 2026 in Korea and added a new design-led flagship called G80 Black, aimed at buyers who want an S Class feeling. The updates lean on customer feedback, simplifying options and sharpening the car’s look rather than reinventing the hardware. View the 3 images of this gallery on the original article 2026 G80: Subtle Tweaks, Smarter SpecThe regular 2026 G80 keeps its existing powertrains in Korea, which is a 2.5 litre turbo four and a 3.5 litre twin turbo V6, both paired with an eight speed automatic and rear or all wheel drive. The changes are about how the car is equipped. An Ergo Motion driver’s seat, previously an option, is now standard to cut fatigue on longer drives, and Genesis has bundled key tech into a single Convenience Package instead of multiple overlapping “Popular” packs. That package now groups the main driver assistance suites and a built in dashcam into one tick box, which should make ordering a lot simpler. Outside, there are two new paint colours, Vatna Gray and Ceres Blue, plus a fresh 19 inch wheel design and a de badged rear that only carries the Genesis wordmark. The idea is to keep the car looking current without losing the understated feel that made it compelling in the first place. G80 Black: All-In On The Monochrome Luxury LookThe new G80 Black goes further, turning the sedan into a full monochrome statement car. Every piece of exterior brightwork is darkened, from grille and window trim to badges, lamp surrounds and the ADAS cover. It rides on gloss black 20 inch wheels with floating centre caps and a muted rear badge, and is only offered with the 2.5T or 3.5T turbo gas engines backed by all wheel drive. Inside, almost everything is blacked out: leather, switchgear, steering wheel, paddle shifters and sill plates, with quilted upholstery and open pore trim keeping it from feeling flat. A 27 inch wide OLED panel combines the gauge cluster and infotainment, and G80 Black specific animations underline the fact this is the top of the G80 tree. It is not a Maybach rival, but for context you can see how Genesis calibrates its flagship feel by looking at how the G90 stacks up against it. Pricing in Korea reflects it, a 2026 G80 2.5T starts in the high 50 million won range, while a G80 Black 3.5T sits closer to the mid 80 millions, in line with its fully loaded spec and design focus. This slots neatly beneath the G90 and ahead of Genesis’ upcoming GV90 SUV, which is expected to offer even more bespoke treatment. View the full article
