  1. When AI Starts Writing TicketsTraffic cameras have been watching drivers for decades, but they've mostly been dumb observers—catching speeders and red-light runners through simple triggers. That's changing fast. Cities worldwide are deploying AI-powered systems that don't just watch; they analyze, predict, and enforce traffic laws with efficiency that human officers just can’t match. In the latest win for AI traffic cameras, eight AI-powered traffic cameras in Athens, Greece has issued citations for approximately 2,500 infractions in just four days. One of the cameras was so active, it wrote tickets for over 1,000 infractions alone; many of them were probable false positives, but the vast majority were actual infractions that would’ve just been glossed over. FLIR From Simple Traffic Cameras to Omnipresent EnforcementRegular traffic cameras took one picture at a time - your car running a red light, speeding past the posted speed limit, etc. New style AI-powered systems can track distracted driving, failure to wear a seat belt, failure to stay in the proper lane, and dozens of other infractions at the same time. This technology is being rolled out rapidly. For example, Dallas has more than 600 AI-powered cameras operating now. North Carolina is planning to implement AI traffic management at 2,500 intersections across the state. Additionally, the state of Hawaii will distribute 1,000 dash cam units to drivers, which will give the state a crowd-sourced surveillance system. AI traffic cameras also provide valuable information about the condition of the roadways. San Jose uses cameras mounted on street sweepers to identify potholes with a 97 percent degree of accuracy. Similarly, the state of Hawaii identifies damaged guardrails thanks to the AI-based system. FLIR Better Roads, Safer Streets But at What Cost? What matters most is that this technology has the potential to actually reduce fatalities. Distracted driving is linked to nearly 3,500 fatalities per year, according to the NHTSA. If AI can catch people using their phones while behind the wheel, then AI could potentially be a game-changer for reducing fatalities. Research studies show that consistent automated enforcement causes drivers to behave less riskily. Every turn you make could be recorded, analyzed, and stored in a database owned by local and/or state governments. The key here is whether there are clear and transparent regulations in place and how those regulations protect the citizens from excessive surveillance as a result of the implementation of this technology. We need to determine if we want safer roads on the one hand, but constant, AI-powered observation of our actions in public spaces on the other. View the full article
  2. The 518-horsepower 992 Porsche 911 GT3 RS weighs 3,268 pounds, giving it a power-to-weight ratio of 0.159 hp/lb, but Theon Design's latest creation makes it look overweight, claiming an even better power-to-weight ratio of 0.166 hp/lb. In less technical terms, the restomod weighs just 2,535 lbs and produces 420 hp at 7,600 rpm (and 324 lb-ft of torque), with extensive use of carbon fiber resulting in what the company is calling a "pared-back, timeless interpretation of the ultimate road-optimized, air-cooled Porsche 911." 0-60 mph takes less than four seconds, which is pretty good for a manual car with an old-school engine, albeit one with a 993 RS-spec six-speed. But even standing still, the car wows with its simple, elegant design. Theon Design Has an Obsession with Fine Details Alex Penfold/Theon Design View the 4 images of this gallery on the original article Although it may look older, Theon's latest build is based on a 964-generation Porsche 911 (retaining that car's active rear spoiler) and over the course of a year and a half, the company stripped it back to a bare shell before fitting the carbon fiber body that helps achieve that GT3 RS-beating power-to-weight figure. In between, all mechanical components, which include the air-cooled 4.0-liter boxer-six engine, were given a period-correct yellow chromate protective coating, while the body was finished in a classic Porsche hue called Medium Ivory, with Copper Brown Metallic Porsche scripts and Grand Prix White striping. This 20-stage paint job took more than 300 hours to complete before being sealed in with a full PPF coating. Seam welding of the rebuilt chassis improves structural strength and heightens torsional rigidity, helping "keep a 992 GT3 RS honest on a twisty road," according to Theon Design co-founder Adam Hawley. Alex Penfold/Theon Design View the 4 images of this gallery on the original article Other highlights include champagne detailing on the wheels, rear engine cover grille, mirrors, and headlight rings, with the brightwork around the glasshouse appearing in Theon's Polished Eclipse Chrome finish. Copper Brown reappears on the 993 RS brake calipers, which hide behind lightweight three-piece 17-inch Fuchs-style wheels in champagne. Naturally, Michelin Pilot Sport tires have been fitted. Theon's New Restomod Has a Soundtrack to Match Its Style Alex Penfold/Theon Design View the 4 images of this gallery on the original article With the coloring and styling evoking the 1970s, Theon added more old-school excellence by fitting open engine trumpets that not only improve torque delivery, but also "vividly recall" Porsche's RSR race cars of the era. To make the most of it, the owner has specified the spacing of the pedals precisely, fixing one of the flaws of older 911s (particularly right-hand-drive models, which have pedals misaligned with the steering wheel) and inviting easy heel-and-toe downshifts. The independent throttle bodies are brought to life by a contemporary ignition system, and when the owner doesn't want to draw too much attention, the exhaust is valved, letting them switch from raucous to restrained at the touch of a button. More modernity comes from a TracTive semi-active setup with five-stage adjustable dampers that are adjusted via a dial on the steering column. Alex Penfold/Theon Design View the 4 images of this gallery on the original article Speaking of the cabin, this boasts Recaro CS seats, with upholstery in nubuck Tobacco and Licorice semi-aniline leathers contrasted by Ivory stripes. Billet aluminum is used for the vents, door handles, and control knobs, which have been reverse-engineered from the plastic Porsche originals, while the rear seats have been deleted in favor of a carbon fiber storage deck with an interior-matched luggage set. Finally, an Audison sound system is equipped, with dual subwoofers in the area where the rear seats once sat. If this sort of excellent attention to detail is up your alley, you'll need to budget £420,000 (roughly $562,000). That excludes the donor car, shipping, local taxes, and the 18 months you must wait for a build to be completed. Worth it? Yes, but it does make a $250k 992 GT3 RS look cheap. 4. A headline grabbing price drop for the 2026 BMW XM is making the rounds, but a closer look suggests the cut may be more about accounting optics than meaningful savings at the dealer. The original claim that the reduction may be largely fake traces back to CarsDirect, which argues that BMW changed the lineup and the incentive picture at the same time, making year over year comparisons look bigger than they may feel in real transactions. BMW View the 2 images of this gallery on the original article What BMW Changed For 2026For 2026, BMW effectively consolidates the XM range into a single offering, the XM Label, which lowers the starting point by eliminating the previous structure and positioning the model as a more distinct flagship. This framing is central to how the new pricing is being presented and aligns with how the vehicle is described as a standalone flagship. The issue is that the previous year featured a different mix and naming approach, so comparing the new base figure to last year’s most expensive headline trim doesn’t provide an accurate comparison of what buyers will actually pay. Why The Cut Could Be MisleadingCarsDirect’s main point is that 2025 XM deals often relied heavily on substantial incentive support, especially on leases, which narrowed the gap between MSRP and transaction price. If that support diminishes or becomes more selective, the lower 2026 sticker price may not deliver the same reduction in monthly payments that the headline suggests, particularly once destination, options, and dealer fees are added back in. This is why the cut can appear dramatic on paper while remaining modest in practice. It also helps explain why pricing narratives matter more for the XM than for many other BMW models, because demand has been soft enough that incentives became part of the story. G-Power What BMW Is Trying To AchievePositioning the XM as a single, high-content model seems like a strategy to ease the initial price shock while maintaining its status as a top-tier M product, rather than something that needs discounts to sell. The tricky part is that the XM is also in the spotlight for performance, where attention can be diverted by extreme aftermarket builds that redefine what value means. If BMW wants the 2026 price reset to be taken seriously, buyers will be keeping a close eye on incentives and lease programs just as much as the new MSRP. View the full article
  5. A third-generation drag racer, Taylor Strange grew up immersed in the sport, as his grandfather raced at the outlaw George Ray’s Wildcat Dragstrip in Arkansas and his father carried the family tradition forward. Strange is also a driver, but his most rewarding moments in the sport have come as a crew member helping family-based team succeed in drag racing’s highest levels. Editor’s Note: This story originally appeared in DI #197, the 30 Under 30 Issue, in November/December 2025. Strange started out driving a Jr. Dragster when he was eight years old, the minimum age at the time. He excelled in the half-scale cars, ultimately winning an NHRA Jr. Drag Racing League national championship at the 2005 Western Conference Finals at Bandimere Speedway outside Denver, Colorado. Another career highlight also took place at Bandimere, but more on that in a moment. After Jr. Dragsters, Strange drove a few different cars in heads-up, index, and big-money bracket racing events. He also rode pro motocross for some time, but when he suffered a serious injury, his father urged him to focus on drag racing on four wheels. In the meantime, Strange went racing with longtime family friend Mike Bowman. He was just a teenager when he started taking on some of the engine maintenance on Bowman’s iconic Chevelle. He learned more as Bowman progressed, competing in West Coast Pro Mod events and later NHRA Pro Mod races before jumping into the No Prep Kings scene when it was hot. That evolution included different engine combinations, from big-block Chevys to Brad Anderson Hemis. “The progression of it is an ongoing learning experience,” Strange says. “You think you know something, and then they put something else in front of you. It’s always something new, which is a huge part of why I like doing what I do.” Strange was a crew member on Bowman’s team when the California native earned a milestone victory at the inaugural Drag Illustrated World Series of Pro Mod at Bandimere in 2017. A doorslammer veteran, Bowman wasn’t exactly an unknown, but he mowed through a field of primarily full-time NHRA Pro Mod teams to earn the $100,000 winner-take-all prize, propelling himself into the Pro Mod spotlight. “That was a huge accomplishment and something special to be a part of,” Strange says. Later, Strange became friends with the Mills family, including 2023 DI 30 Under 30 honoree Kallee Mills and her parents, Dewayne and Tara. He now works for the Mills family full-time, operating within their business, Mills Truck & Tractor Service, during the week and going racing on the weekends. With the Kallee Mills Motorsports team, Strange has been a part of Mills’ rookie season in Mid-West Drag Racing Series Pro Mod, where she picked up her first career win, set impressive career-best numbers, and finished third in the championship points standings. She’s also won some N/T 275 shootouts. “Seeing them win back-to-back where we’re at right now, that’s important to me because they’re like family,” he says. “Seeing them succeed and being a part of it is awesome. There are a lot of people in this world that would do anything to be standing where we are. To be on winning programs and watch people you care about succeed – there’s nothing that beats that feeling.” Strange hasn’t given up on his own goals as a driver. He’s spent the later part of the 2025 season preparing his own car to compete in the Drag Illustrated Winter Series at Bradenton Motorsports Park. Driving his Haas-built ’89 Beretta powered by a five-inch-bore-space nitrous engine and riding on 28×10.5 slicks, Strange will compete in the invite-only True 10.5 class at the three Winter Series races. “We just went our personal best on the tire in testing to get ready for the Snowbirds,” he says. “The goal is to have one of the fastest small-tire cars in the country, and I think we’re well on our way. We’ll see where we stack up with some of these big-name guys on small tires.” It’s clear that Strange is passionate not just about drag racing, but also the people that make his participation in it possible. “If it wasn’t for my old man, I wouldn’t even be involved in the sport,” he says. “Mike Bowman and his family got me started doing it as a profession, and the Mills family took me in and allowed me to turn it into a whole lifestyle. I’m thankful for all of them.” The post DI 30 Under 30 2025: Taylor Strange first appeared on Drag Illustrated. View the full article
  6. The first-ever iteration of a new variant in the automotive world needs to be good to win over its intended target base, and based on what we know so far, the first BMW iX3 M will be seriously impressive and do the M Division proud. Spied in Northern Sweden, undergoing winter testing, this development mule for the 2027 iX3 M is showing off aggressive bodywork, beefy brakes, and a sporty cabin, and insiders say it'll have loads of power, sharing its basic setup with the first-ever electric M3 sedan. We'll discuss all those details momentarily, but let's start with the cosmetics. After all, the Pontiac Aztek was a brilliant car with remarkable versatility, but it was widely shunned for quirky, if not downright ugly, looks. 2027 BMW iX3 M Will Look the Part SH Proshots/Autoblog View the 4 images of this gallery on the original article Of course, beauty is subjective, and although we're not suggesting that the new iX3 M will look anything as unresolved as the Aztek, we do concede that EVs often look awkward. Fortunately, the electric M crossover starts with a strong base, building on the already-revealed iX3's Neue Klasse design language with subtle enhancements. The bumpers on this prototype are placeholder items, so we can't determine how aggressive they'll look for final production, but M-specific mirrors, drilled brake discs with blue calipers, and a roof spoiler with sharper strakes all follow a familiar recipe that makes a sport impact. An M-pact, if you will. Sorry. Like the bumpers, the wheels on his test mule will be replaced with sportier items, and according to an insider's publications on the Bimmer Post forums, unique headlights with "distinctive color elements" may find their way to M-enhanced vehicles. This may mean yellow DRLs, like all CS models since the F90 M5 (with the exception of the latest, the G87 M2). Just as critical as the exterior styling is how the cabin feels, and our spies got a look at that, too. First-Ever iX3 M Steering Into True M Territory SH Proshots/Autoblog View the 3 images of this gallery on the original article Admittedly, we're still some way from a reveal because BMW engineers have been told to keep sheets of fabric draped over most of the cabin, but the area above the 9- and 3-o'clock spokes on the steering wheel is conspicuous in its attempts to hide what lies beneath. A hint of red peers from under the fabric tape, confirming that the iX3 M will have M1 and M2 buttons for storing a driver's optimal suspension, throttle, steering, and sound selections. The tricolor stitching of the wheel is also commonplace in an M vehicle, and we can see paddles behind the wheel for simulating gear shifts, like in a Hyundai Ioniq 6 N. Well-bolstered seats (with tape over the M logo) will provide comfort and support, but we wouldn't be surprised to see more aggressive buckets offered as an option. Related: What to Expect From the New BMW Alpina Brand As for the powertrain components of the iX3 M, these will be shared with the upcoming electric M3 sedan (internally codenamed ZA0). That means four motors with torque vectoring, and potentially as much as 800 horsepower on tap (though far more is possible). We'll learn more as the camouflage is peeled off and more details are leaked throughout the year, with a full reveal likely to come at the end of 2026. 7. Legal Limits on AestheticsVanity plates can add another layer of aesthetic appeal to a car, with some designs even supporting causes such as Breast Cancer Awareness through pink plates. However, the San Diego Police Department (SDPD) warns that modified license plates are illegal and may result in confiscation or even vehicle impoundment, as altered plates can pose safety concerns. In a report by CBS 8 San Diego, SDPD Officer Anthony Carrasco said dozens of illegal license plates were confiscated within a single month. Many of the plates were created using wrap kits purchased online for around $10, with the most common being black-themed designs, a visual throwback to California’s license plates from the 1960s. By comparison, official specialty plates from the California Department of Motor Vehicles can cost up to $110 initially, plus an annual renewal fee of roughly half that amount. Ignorance Isn’t a DefenseThe report noted that price isn’t the sole reason car owners turn to modified plates, as some are simply unaware they are breaking the law. Given the potential fines and the time-consuming process of recovering an impounded vehicle, Carrasco said using an illegal plate is not worth the risk of getting caught. Modified plates can violate two California laws. Assembly Bill 2111 prohibits the alteration or tampering of license plates, while Assembly Bill 1085 bans the manufacture of devices designed to obscure plates from cameras, carrying fines of up to $1,000 per item. When plate details are blocked from cameras, public safety concerns arise, as law enforcement may struggle to identify and track violators, a serious concern in stolen vehicle cases. In the event of an accident, first responders may also struggle to identify the vehicle involved. Because modified plates and covers are widely available online, SDPD says it has encountered them across nearly all vehicle types, from everyday cars like the Toyota Corolla to high-end vehicles from Lamborghini. Copyright 2016 Sebastian Blanco / AOL Customization Has Its PlaceModified license plates themselves are not always illegal. Some car owners use vanity or foreign plates – such as Japanese-style plates – for shows, photoshoots, or private property use, often to enhance a vehicle’s appearance or promote car builds online. However, violations occur when modified plates replace active, registered plates on public roads. For those seeking a legal alternative, car owners can apply for specialty plates through the DMV, which offers a range of approved designs, from Yosemite Conservancy plates to Disabled Person plates. However, not all personalized plate requests are approved, particularly if the wording is deemed inappropriate. Reddit r/LICENSEPLATES @u/mrsbrattyb View the full article

The hood sides are one of them that stands out, because there is a huge gap around the bottome edge of the hood, where it meets the sides, and in order to fix it there is some cutting and welding that is going to have to happen. 9. Programme Solitaire’s Next CreationProgramme Solitaire is Bugatti’s answer to modern coachbuilding. It’s not about trim levels or ticking boxes on a configurator. Instead, each car is built for a single owner, with no compromises and no production shortcuts. The first result was Brouillard, a one-off coupe that launched last year. Built on Bugatti’s current hypercar platform, it stood out for its long-tail design, custom bodywork, and the familiar quad-turbo W16 under the hood. Soon after Brouillard, rumors surfaced, hinting at a second Programme Solitaire car. Bugatti kept quiet at first, but now the company has confirmed it: the next Solitaire project is finished and set for its public debut next week. https://youtube.com/shorts/kWny4Tnd65U?si=cWK58U35TGvFOUjX The Teaser Said EnoughBugatti’s announcement leans on heritage buzzwords and avoids specifics. Phrases like “singularly signature creative expression” and “automotive artistry” fill the release, but hard facts are missing. Still, a few things are made clear. This is a Programme Solitaire creation. It is “ultra-exclusive.” And most importantly, it is described as a “one-of-one tribute to an icon of Bugatti’s inimitable story.” That choice of words isn’t accidental. Factoring in an earlier report of a $20-million one-off inspired by a past model, it points to what’s been rumored for months: a custom-built Veyron tribute. The teaser image and short video confirm the familiar W16 engine, just like Brouillard. Expect around 1,600 horsepower, if the hints are accurate. Bugatti We Think We Know What It IsBugatti hasn’t officially called its upcoming release a Veyron tribute, but the French marque isn’t denying it either. The Veyron changed the hypercar game when it launched in the mid-2000s, with 1,001 horsepower, a quad-turbo W16, and a top speed over 250 mph. It set the stage for the Chiron and everything that came after. Recently, Bugatti has been quietly revisiting the Veyron story in official posts and throwbacks. With the teaser’s focus on “inimitable story,” a Veyron tribute makes sense. A modern take, built with today’s design and Programme Solitaire’s approach, would be both nostalgic and smart for the brand. We won’t have to guess much longer. Bugatti will reveal the car online on January 22 at 10:00 AM ET. Bugatti View the 4 images of this gallery on the original article View the full article
  10. Eyes on the World’s Biggest MarketWith Hyundai reportedly surpassing Volkswagen as the world’s second-most profitable automaker – behind Toyota – last year, it comes as little surprise that the Korean marque is continuing to expand its global reach. Its latest initiative centers on an aggressive expansion strategy in the world's biggest car market, China, headlined by plans to introduce 20 new models over the next four to five years. According to China’s Autohome, Hyundai CEO José Muñoz recently visited joint-venture partner BAIC Group, where he spoke about the company’s strategic priorities in China. Following its $1.1 billion capital injection into the Chinese joint venture in 2024, the broadened model lineup is ultimately aimed at reaching annual sales of 500,000 units—more than double Beijing Hyundai’s reported 210,000 vehicle sales recorded in 2025. China's Autohome The Premium PushA key component of this push involves rolling out new models positioned to capture a share of China’s competitive high-end car market. That move would place Hyundai in direct competition with brands such as Zeekr, maker of the 1,248-horsepower 001 FR, as well as AUDI. The latter is not a typo, but Audi’s China-exclusive sub-brand, which focuses exclusively on electric vehicles, including models like the E5 Sportback. The report notes that Hyundai plans to leverage its existing sales network and service infrastructure to support the localization and rollout of the high-end brand within the Chinese market. At present, the Beijing Hyundai lineup consists of familiar nameplates such as the Elantra, Sonata, and Tucson. However, the joint venture also offers China-specific products, including the Elexio, a locally developed EV that arrived in October 2025 with a CLTC-rated driving range of 722 kilometers (approximately 449 miles). As is typically the case, that figure would likely be lower if measured under the more conservative U.S. EPA testing standard. China's Autohome Strengthening the FoundationBeyond expanding its model portfolio, Hyundai also plans to deepen cooperation with BAIC Group in product development, with a particular emphasis on advanced technologies, electrification, and intelligent in-car systems. The automaker further intends to deploy experienced technical experts to support localized development efforts and improve overall efficiency. In the U.S., Hyundai is pursuing a similarly expansionary approach. Last year, the company announced a $55 billion investment plan, with a significant portion expected to be directed toward the country, including a $2.7 billion allocation to expand production capacity at its Metaplant in Savannah, Georgia. Among the anticipated additions to its U.S. lineup is a true body-on-frame pickup truck, which would complement the lifestyle-oriented Santa Cruz. China's Autohome View the full article

They aren’t alone, as lots of racers are in full thrash mode getting cars ready or testing before Sick Week starts. Not everyone will get done enough to actually do testing before arriving at Gainesville Raceway, but those that do are hoping their cars will do what they planned for the 2026 race. Not all will. Here’s how Alex’s testing went so far. She’s happy! Video Description: Everyone’s favorite thing to say – is that the 55 won’t run quicker because of aerodynamics. And my favorite thing to say is – that’s not true. We just need to work on the first half the track. We’re running 220+ mph… That’s enough mph for a mid 6 second pass. But we’ve always been behind in the short numbers because the car has been temperamental at the hit and not reacted how we wanted so we haven’t been able to add power. But, after testing in Norwalk with Mickey Thompson, we had things we wanted to test. So we rented Centerville Dragway close to us, and working on proving our theories. And for the First time we saw a 1.0x 60 ft. That’s so impressive for what the car is and moving in the right direction! And after reviewing data, the chassis seems so much happier. Looking forward to Sick Week 2026 now! Also – I was totally sick in this video. lol Thanks for watching! The post She KNEW the ’55 Had It In It ! 12. Aging Nameplates That Refuse to Fully FadeScan Mazda’s global lineup today, and two models jump out – not because they break the brand’s design rules, but because they’re simply showing their age. The Mazda2 and CX-3 have been around since 2014, meaning they’ve lasted more than a decade. That’s a long stretch for any modern car. Even with all those years behind them, both models have stuck around. The Mazda2 left the U.S. a while back, with the CX-3 stepping in as its unofficial replacement. But the CX-3 didn’t stick around long either, leaving the American market in 2022. Elsewhere, though, both kept going. Mazda even gave the Mazda2 a light update last year, keeping it in play where small, budget-friendly cars still count. But it looks like that long run is finally winding down. Reports out of Japan point to both models reaching the end, with Mazda already lining up what comes next. Mazda Dealer Documents Reveal the EndAccording to dealer documents revealed in Japan, Mazda will cease the CX-3’s production in March 2026. The Mazda2 will last a little longer, with production scheduled to close out in June. Orders for both models are apparently being limited, with dealers instructed to stop taking new reservations once production allocations are filled. Mazda hasn’t said anything official yet, but this kind of dealer memo usually means the decision is set. It’s also how Mazda tends to retire models – quietly, one market at a time, instead of making a big global announcement. The timing here matters. Mazda looks like it’s making room in the lineup, not just swapping out old models for new ones. Instead of launching separate replacements for the Mazda2 and CX-3, the Hiroshima-based company might be streamlining its entry-level lineup. Drew Phillips One Replacement, Not TwoThat’s where the Vision X-Compact concept enters the picture. Mazda showed it off at the Japan Mobility Show, and it hints at a new small car that splits the difference between a hatchback and a crossover. It’s got the upright look buyers want now, but it stays low to the ground and keeps things compact. If Mazda does merge the Mazda2 and CX-3 into one, the Vision X-Compact is a logical place to start. It lets Mazda keep a small, affordable option in the lineup without spreading itself thin across two old models. I personally love its non-cookie-cutter look, and hopefully Mazda keeps its pizzazz if it reaches production. Again, nothing’s official at this point, but the timing, the dealer info, and the new concept all seem to line up. Whether the next model is more hatchback or crossover is still anyone’s guess. Then again, with the CX-30 already blurring the lines, Mazda might not bother picking sides. Jacob Oliva/Autoblog View the 6 images of this gallery on the original article View the full article

  23. In a sport where seats are rarely surrendered willingly – especially at the championship level – Bob Tasca III made it clear that his decision to turn over Funny Car driving duties wasn’t driven by circumstance, pressure, or corporate maneuvering. It was driven by conviction. Standing on stage at the Ford Racing Season Launch ’26 in Detroit, Tasca didn’t hesitate when explaining why reigning Funny Car champion Austin Prock is taking over the wheel of the Ford Performance Mustang Funny Car for the upcoming NHRA season. “There’s nobody I was getting out of the seat for – except this guy,” Tasca said, motioning toward Prock during a live social media broadcast from the event. That statement alone framed the move in unmistakable terms. This wasn’t a reshuffle or a quiet transition behind closed doors. It was a deliberate handoff, rooted in respect and belief – one competitor recognizing another as the right fit to carry the program forward. For Tasca, the announcement marked more than just a driver change. It represented the beginning of a new chapter for Tasca Racing, one that blends championship-level driving talent with a deeper integration of one of drag racing’s most respected families. “We’re thrilled,” Tasca said. “Not just to have Austin, but Jimmy, and Thomas, and Sam – the whole team.” That distinction matters. In bringing Prock aboard, Tasca Racing didn’t simply add a driver with a title résumé. They added infrastructure, experience, and a proven performance mindset that has been built over decades in the sport. The Prock name carries weight not just for what Austin has accomplished behind the wheel, but for the collective knowledge and preparation that surrounds him. Tasca made it clear that expectation – not sentiment – is driving the move. “I can tell you right now, this Funny Car will be a force to be reckoned with this season,” he said. There was no hedging in his tone. No easing fans into a transitional year. The message was straightforward: this is a championship-caliber program intent on remaining exactly that. For Prock, the moment represented both opportunity and responsibility. Speaking briefly during the exchange, he acknowledged the significance of stepping into the seat and the chance to do so under the Ford Performance banner. “I’m excited,” Prock said. “It’s a great opportunity to race the Ford Racing Mustang.” That alignment – driver, team, and manufacturer – was underscored by the setting itself. The announcement came as part of Ford’s global Season Launch ’26 event, which showcased not only a refreshed Ford Performance identity but a unified vision across on-road and off-road racing platforms. In that environment, Tasca Racing’s decision landed less like internal team news and more like an industry-level statement. For Tasca, the choice also speaks to confidence in the program he’s built. Stepping aside doesn’t signal retreat; it signals trust – trust in Prock, trust in the team around him, and trust that the foundation is strong enough to support continued success. In a category as competitive and unforgiving as NHRA Funny Car, that kind of clarity is rare. Seats change hands often. Rarely are they handed over with this level of certainty. But as Tasca made clear, some decisions don’t require overthinking. “There was nobody else,” he said. “Except this guy.” This story was originally published on January 16, 2026. 24. Canada & China make a deal on canola products and Chinese-made EVsIn an announcement during his official state visit to Beijing on January 16, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that Canada and China have entered into a sweeping "strategic partnership" that would dramatically lower tariffs on key products from their respective countries. During a news conference, Mr. Carney announced that Canada will allow up to 49,000 Chinese-made electric vehicles to be imported and sold in the country under a new "most-favoured-nation tariff rate of 6.1%", a dramatic drop from the 100% rate it imposed in 2024 at the request of the United States. In return, Mr. Carney said the Chinese government will lower its tariffs on Canadian canola seed from nearly 85% to about 15%, and remove its 100% tariff on Canadian canola meal. Canola seed is used to make canola oil for cooking, while its byproduct, canola meal, is used as a protein-rich ingredient in livestock feed. As a result, the reduced tariffs are seen as a major sign of relief for Canadian farmers, as statistics from the Canadian Canola Council indicate that the industry generates an average of C$43.7 billion (~US$31.38 billion) in economic activity each year. “President Xi and I are announcing that Canada and China are forging a new strategic partnership,” Mr. Carney said. Getty The Canada-China EV deal will focus on lower-end carsAccording to a release from the Canadian Prime Minister's Office, the 49,000 Chinese EVs that it will allow into the country under this new preferred rate will represent "less than 3%" of the Canadian new vehicle market, adding that it expects that within five years, "more than 50% of these vehicles will be affordable EVs with an import price of less than [C$35,000]," which would create "new lower-cost options for Canadian consumers." Sales figures reveal that Chinese manufacturers are making a significant dent in the global EV market. Data released this month shows that BYD overtook Tesla as the world’s best-selling EV manufacturer in 2025, selling about 2.25 million BEVs, compared with Tesla’s roughly 1.63 million units in 2025. Its lowest-priced model, the compact five-door Seagull, sells for as low as $7,800 (~CA$10,861) in China. A separate backgrounder from the Government of Canada states that it expects its deal with China will open the door to "considerable new Chinese joint-venture investment in Canada" that will "protect and create new auto manufacturing jobs for Canadian workers, and ensure a robust build-out of Canada's EV supply chain." Bloomberg/Getty Images A tough sell for some Canadian leadersWhile Chinese President Xi Jinping and Mr. Carney were cordial about this new trade deal, notable Canadian politicos had mixed reactions regarding the Sino-Canadian developments, especially on the topic of Chinese EVs. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe said the deal was "good news" for Canada and the province. Notably, Saskatchewan is a central growing region for the Canola industry, with over 30% of the province's acres dedicated to the crop. "Today demonstrates the importance of foreign trade missions and shows what can be achieved when the federal and provincial governments and our export industries work together to strengthen our trade relationships," he said. However, the deal has its critics. According to a CBC report, Ontario Premier Doug Ford, whose province is home to factories for Ford, General Motors, Stellantis, Honda, and Toyota, criticized both Carney and the arrangement, noting that the Prime Minister could have met with automakers before signing such a consequential agreement. Stellantis "We're letting China into a market that's going to have lower tariffs than our largest market, the U.S., and I don't think that's going to go over too well with President Trump," Ford told reporters. "It's going to hurt every single auto manufacturer, every single supply chain that has anything to do with the auto sector. This was not thought of properly, it wasn't consulted, it was a knee-jerk reaction as far as I'm concerned, and this is going to be a big, big problem." In addition, Ford raised national security concerns regarding Chinese EVs. In the Canadian Government's statement, it noted that "Canada will also work with Chinese auto manufacturers on timely vehicle certification to ensure they meet Canadian motor vehicle safety standards," though Ford expressed distrust over a different type of safety. "I'll be very honest: I don't trust what the Chinese put in these cars," he said. "And I'm wondering if the Americans would allow them to integrate their social media and the internet into these cars? The answer is no." Final thoughtsIt should be noted that a similar deal has come between the European Union and the Chinese government. On January 12, the European Commission, the EU's executive arm, and China’s Ministry of Commerce announced new guidance that would replace steep tariffs on imported EVs from China. Their new rules allow automakers with factories in China, as well as Chinese automakers, to voluntarily limit the number of units they ship from the People’s Republic to Europe and set minimum prices for said cars based on their perceived economic impact. Canada is one of the United States' closest neighbors, and it will be very interesting to see the impact such a policy will have, especially if it helps Chinese EV companies like BYD or Geely establish production in the country. Hcalory Diesel Heater Toolbox Max Review: Real Heat for Real Overlanding Cold nights are part of the adventure when you’re overlanding, camping, or living out of a rooftop tent — but being miserable doesn’t have to be. After years of relying on propane heaters and layering up just to sleep through the night, I finally decided to test a diesel heater designed specifically for portable outdoor use. The Hcalory Diesel Heater TB MAX has completely changed how I approach cold-weather trips, and after extensive real-world testing, it’s become one of the most impactful upgrades I’ve added to my overland setup. This isn’t just another heater claiming to be “camping friendly.” The TB MAX is purpose-built for people who actually spend nights off-grid, in the cold, and want consistent, safe, controllable heat without the stress of open flames or oxygen depletion inside their sleeping space. What the Hcalory Diesel Heater TB Max Is The Hcalory TB MAX is a fully self-contained diesel heater housed in a rugged, weather-resistant toolbox-style enclosure. Unlike permanently mounted diesel heaters commonly found in vans or RVs, this unit is designed to be portable, making it ideal for rooftop tents, ground tents, overland trailers, cabins, and even emergency use. At the heart of the TB MAX is a 7.5-liter diesel fuel tank, which allows the heater to run for up to 62.5 hours on its lowest setting. That kind of runtime means you can comfortably get through multi-night trips without worrying about refueling, even in sustained cold temperatures. Diesel fuel is also far safer to store and transport compared to propane, making it a better long-term solution for extended adventures. The heater produces warm, dry air, an important distinction. Unlike propane heaters, which introduce moisture into your living space, diesel heat keeps condensation down. Anyone who has woken up to wet sleeping bags or frost inside a tent understands how valuable that is. Intelligent Temperature Control That Actually Works One of the standout features of the TB MAX is how well it handles temperature regulation. This isn’t a heater that simply blasts hot air nonstop. It includes a wireless remote that functions as a thermostat, allowing the heater to automatically adjust output to maintain a set temperature. In real use, this means you can dial in your ideal sleeping temperature and let the heater manage itself throughout the night. When the tent warms up, the heater throttles down. When temperatures drop, it ramps back up. The result is consistent comfort without overheating or waking up cold at 3 a.m. The system also includes an LCD control panel with a long extension cable, which allows you to keep all controls inside your tent or vehicle while the heater remains outside. There’s also Bluetooth app connectivity, giving you the ability to monitor temperature, heater status, and safety alerts directly from your phone. Built-In Safety You Can Trust Safety is always the biggest concern when introducing heat into a camping setup, especially when you’re sleeping. This is where the Hcalory TB MAX truly separates itself from traditional camping heaters. The system includes a built-in carbon monoxide alarm integrated into the wireless remote. CO levels are constantly monitored, and thresholds can be customized within the app. If unsafe levels are ever detected, the heater will automatically shut down and trigger an alarm. In practical use, this provides a level of reassurance that propane heaters simply can’t match. Since combustion and exhaust remain completely outside the living space, and only heated air is ducted inside, the risk profile is dramatically lower. Even so, having an intelligent CO monitoring system built into the heater adds another critical layer of protection. Setup and Installation in the Real World Setting up the TB MAX is straightforward, even for someone new to diesel heaters. Because the unit is fully self-contained, there’s no permanent installation required. I place the heater outside the tent or vehicle, run the heated air duct inside, and route the exhaust safely away from camp. Everything needed for setup comes in the box, including ducting, exhaust piping, wiring, mounting accessories, and a surprisingly helpful instruction manual. The heater primes itself, ignites quickly, and begins producing warm air in roughly three minutes. One of the things I appreciated most during setup was how adaptable the system is. Whether you’re heating a rooftop tent, a ground tent, or a small enclosed space, the flexible ducting and portable design make it easy to dial in a safe, efficient layout. Real-World Testing Results During testing, the Hcalory TB MAX performed exceptionally well across a range of temperatures and environments. In near-freezing conditions, the heater had no problem bringing a rooftop tent up to a comfortable sleeping temperature and maintaining it throughout the night. Noise is always a concern with diesel heaters, but Hcalory has addressed this well. The upgraded silent fuel pump eliminates the loud ticking common in older diesel units, and the airflow noise is more of a consistent white noise than a disruptive sound. Once you’re settled in, it fades into the background. Fuel efficiency was another pleasant surprise. Even running the heater nightly, fuel consumption remained minimal. The large tank and efficient combustion system meant I never felt anxious about running out of heat overnight. Power draw is worth mentioning. Like all diesel heaters, startup requires a higher electrical load due to the glow plug ignition process. As long as your battery or power station is properly sized, this isn’t an issue — but it’s something to plan for when building your power system. Why Diesel Heat Beats Propane for Overlanding After using the TB MAX, going back to propane simply doesn’t make sense. Diesel heaters provide cleaner, drier heat, better temperature control, longer runtimes, and significantly improved safety. You’re not burning oxygen inside your tent, you’re not dealing with moisture buildup, and you’re not relying on disposable fuel canisters. For anyone who camps in cold weather regularly, a diesel heater isn’t just a luxury — it’s a game-changer. Final Thoughts The Hcalory Diesel Heater TB MAX delivers exactly what overlanders and cold-weather campers need: reliable heat, intelligent controls, strong safety features, and true portability. It’s well-built, thoughtfully designed, and performs exactly as advertised in real conditions. If you’re serious about extending your camping season, improving sleep quality, and staying comfortable no matter the temperature, this heater deserves a spot in your gear lineup.
