NHRA Announces Great Lakes Nationals At U.S. 131 Motorsports Park!
(Words by Darr Hawthorne) • The National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) announced today that U.S. 131 Motorsports Park will host a Mission Foods Drag Racing Series event in 2026, with the inaugural NHRA Great Lakes Nationals opening the Countdown to the Championship playoffs. The new event, scheduled for Sept. 18–20 in Martin, Michigan, will serve as the 15th of 20 races during NHRA’s 75th anniversary season and the first of six playoff rounds. Tickets go on sale February 1, 2026. U.S. 131 Motorsports Park will also host an NHRA national open on July 8-9, leading into a Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series divisional event on July 10-12. While NHRA framed this announcement as continued growth, the move effectively ends the Keystone Nationals following the IHRA’s acquisition of Maple Grove Raceway, removing one of the sport’s most historic venues from the NHRA national event schedule. 2025 celebrated the 40th annual NHRA Reading Nationals at Maple Grove. It should be noted that the seating capacity of Maple Grove is upwards of 30,000 while U.S. 131 Motorsports Park reportedly accommodates some 12,000 plus spectators. The Great Lakes Nationals will mark NHRA’s first national event at U.S. 131 and brings the total to four “new” National Event facilities for 2026. A majority of those tracks were formerly AHRA or IHRA or Outlaw Street sanctions. This shift underscores a changing landscape for NHRA, as expansion into new markets comes at the expense of long-established tracks with large capacity grandstands, raising questions about tradition, territory, and the long-term direction of the national event calendar during NHRA’s milestone 75th Anniversary Season. Infiniti’s Performance Division Is Closer Than You Think
Nissan’s luxury brand Infiniti appears ready to spawn a performance-focused sub-brand. The company has already gone on record about wanting “true performance” models capable of taking on BMW M and Mercedes-AMG, developed with help from Nismo and built in limited numbers. To Infiniti and Beyond, if you will. Now, internal developments suggest that this ambition may be moving out of the concept phase and closer to production reality, with a clear starting point and a tentative timeline. From Ambition to Execution Infiniti When Infiniti leadership previously spoke about performance, the message was largely philosophical: build halo cars, make them meaningfully faster, and ensure they feel worthy of the badge. According to recent comments from Infiniti and Nissan executives, that thinking has progressed into technical feasibility work. The QX80 has emerged as the front-runner for this new performance line, having already been previewed through multiple high-profile concepts, most notably the 1,000-hp R-Spec and 650-hp Track Spec. The next challenge is all about real-world feasibility. Engineers are now tasked with proving that improved cooling, brakes, suspension, and chassis tuning can support that output reliably, putting it in the same conversation as established performance SUVs like the BMW XM. If approved, the stand-alone brand's performance DNA could eventually trickle down the lineup, potentially influencing future models such as the 2026 Infiniti QX60. Learning from Nismo Missteps Nissan Infiniti’s renewed push is also shaped by lessons learned the hard way. Previous performance efforts struggled to gain traction because the gap between standard and upgraded models was simply too small. That criticism extends beyond Infiniti itself. Nissan vehicles like the Z Nismo and Armada Nismo delivered only minor power increases, leaning heavily on red accents and visual flair rather than power gains. This time, Infiniti appears determined not to repeat that mistake. Executives have spoken about dramatic gains rather than incremental ones, with some even floating the idea of doubling output compared to standard models. Expected to Arrive in 2027 Infiniti If internal studies continue to produce positive results, Infiniti could make a final go-ahead decision as early as 2026. Should that happen, the QX80 Track Spec would likely be the first production model under this new performance umbrella, potentially reaching showrooms within a year of approval. Volumes would remain low, and pricing would sit at the top of the range, positioning these models as halo products rather than mainstream sellers. There is still plenty left unanswered, including what this performance division will ultimately be called. And if it is not called “Beyond,” it would be a missed opportunity. View the full article

Future Jeeps and Rams Could Be Designed to Contain EV Battery Fires
Chances of EV Fires are Low, But Not ZeroStatistically, EV fires are a rare occurrence compared to hybrid and ICE vehicle fires. Of course, they're reported more often than not, and understandably so. Nonetheless, it's hard to deny the stats, and there will always be the danger of a fire, regardless of propulsion. But what makes EV fires different is the battery's composition. Most use lithium-ion cells, which, when exposed to flames or damaged, explode. Putting out said fires is a different challenge for first responders, as they also have to deal with a phenomenon called thermal runaway. To oversimplify it, it's a chain reaction that makes them harder to put out. MediaNews Group/Los Angeles Daily News via Getty Images/Getty Images Solutions, Anyone?Automakers are doing what they can to prevent EV fires from happening in the first place. At the same time, fire departments already have protocols in place to extinguish them. What we don't have right now is to suppress the fire before it gets worse. Granted, ICE-powered cars don't really have them, but given the volatility of thermal runaway fires, it's something good to have. Over in China, one solution proposed was to eject the flaming battery from the vehicle. We can already see you raising your eyebrows, scratching your head, or laughing. Shooting a flaming projectile into a sidewalk won't end well for anyone. Meanwhile, Stellantis might have a solution that might work for everyone. The company was recently granted its patent (Pub. No.: US 2025/0372750) for a built-in fire suppressant for EVs and hybrids. It surely sounds better than firing a flaming battery pack at unsuspecting pedestrians and road users. Built-in Fire Suppressant SystemOn-board fire suppressants aren't new in cars. It was once an option for the Ford Crown Victoria, specifically the Police Interceptor. As police vehicles are vulnerable to being rear-ended, it was a worthwhile thing to add. With EV fires being a concern, it's a good time to revisit it. Stellantis' solution is a little more extreme compared to the one fitted to the good ol' Crown Vic. The proposed fire suppressant system has to deal with a more intense flame and prevent thermal runaway from happening in the first place. So, what are the key components? U How It WorksThere's a bladder filled with fire-retardant chemicals, along with two blades to pierce it and channel the suppressant to specific cooling lines, and a barrage of actuators and sensors. The entire system constantly monitors operating temperatures and will channel more coolant when certain parameters are exceeded. The foam will only be activated when the risk of thermal runaway is high. In theory, it sounds like a viable solution. Putting it into practical application will be a totally different matter. As with all things, it's easier said than done. But if Stellantis can package it in a way that it won't add more weight or force them to use a smaller battery, then this has all the potential to be a win for consumers. We reckon firefighters will appreciate it too. U View the 2 images of this gallery on the original article View the full article

Tesla Finds a Way to Integrate Starlink On Its EVs for Off-Grid Connection
Tesla Looks to the SkiesA recent Tesla patent explores the use of radio-frequency (RF) transparent materials in the roofs of its electric vehicles, hinting at the possible future integration of Starlink connectivity. However, implementing such a system would not be as straightforward as it sounds, as these alternative materials could raise structural and compliance challenges. The patent (Pub. No U.S. 2025/0368267) references materials such as polycarbonate, acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, and acrylonitrile styrene acrylate, which, compared with traditional materials like metal and glass, can present different strength characteristics. Tesla reportedly plans to mitigate these concerns by using a multi-layer construction, potentially consisting of four layers, which could help restore rigidity while also improving noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) performance. “By employing polymer blends, some examples enable RF transmission from all the modules to satellites and other communication devices, both inside and outside the vehicle,” Tesla wrote in the patent filing. United States Patent and Trademark Office A Broader Technology EcosystemGiven Starlink’s connection to SpaceX – a rocket and satellite company also led by Tesla CEO Elon Musk – the use of polymer-based, RF-transparent roof panels could further strengthen the broader Musk-led technology ecosystem. In theory, such a design could allow Tesla vehicles, including mass-market models like the Model 3 and Model Y, to maintain satellite connectivity even in remote areas where cellular coverage is usually limited. At present, Tesla offers Standard Connectivity, which includes navigation and basic vehicle functions, with many features available over Wi-Fi. The company also offers Premium Connectivity, available as a $9.99/month option in the U.S., which enables features such as live traffic visualization and streaming services over cellular networks. Teslarati Rethinking Satellite IntegrationWhile most automakers pursuing satellite-based vehicle connectivity rely on partnerships with third-party providers, Tesla's integration of Starlink directly into its EVs would represent a unique approach. It’s worth noting, though, that Tesla and SpaceX/Starlink, despite both being led by Elon Musk, operate independently. As this remains at the patent stage, there is no guarantee the concept will reach production. If Tesla successfully implements the concept, it could reinforce the brand’s reputation as a technological frontrunner, alongside innovations such as the 4680 battery cell. Execution, however, will be key, as poor integration of new materials and construction methods could result in build quality issues, an area where Tesla has faced criticism in the past. Ford Made the Mustang Mach-E Cheaper for 2026 by Removing a Basic EV Feature
In a climate of regular price hikes, getting anything worthwhile for free is rare, and for 2026 Ford Mustang Mach-E buyers, there's one fewer item that falls into that category. As reported by Electrek, Ford's new Mustang Mach-E brand manager, Teddy Ankeny, revealed to The Electric Duo that, for the 2026 model year, the controversially badged crossover will no longer provide a frunk for free, despite the fact that many EVs offer extra space in the area that an internal combustion engine would traditionally sit. But this decision wasn't made for nefarious reasons, says Ankeny. Instead, it's meant to save buyers a little money on their base MSRPs. Why The Mustang Mach-E's Frunk Now Costs Extra Ford View the 2 images of this gallery on the original article Ankeny explained that the Blue Oval opted to make the frunk a charged option because of buyer choices. Basically, Ford revised pricing and added a price to the frunk because most buyers weren't looking for it in the first place, and no longer charging for a frunk as part of the base MSRP gives buyers a slightly cheaper entry point to Mach-E ownership. Indeed, the 2026 Mustang Mach-E GT is roughly $1,000 cheaper than the 2025 model, starting at $53,395. Related: The Average New Car Price Is Now Over $50k In The US, And EVs Are To Blame Lower down the ladder, the 2026 Mustang Mach-E Select starts at $37,795 ($200 less than the 2025 model), while the new-for-2026 California Edition starts at $55,890. This special edition is based on the range-topping GT variant and adds a number of Rave Blue accents to the badges, grille, interior, and special 20-inch Carbonized Gray wheels, which boast gloss black aero covers. 2026 Mustang Mach-E Features Ford Depending on spec, the 2026 Mustang Mach-E produces 264 horsepower or 272 hp from a single rear-mounted motor, 325 hp or 370 hp from a dual-motor all-wheel-drive configuration, or in top-tier guise (that means the GT model with the Performance upgrade or the Mach-E Rally model), 480 hp and 700 lb-ft of torque, delivering a 0-60 time in the mid-to-low 3-second range. Up to 320 miles of range is possible on a single charge, and the cargo area offers 29.7 cubic feet of volume for all your stuff. For the record, the front trunk/frunk offers an additional 4.8 cubic feet of storage space. That's not a huge amount to give up for a $1,000 cut on pricing; as noted by Ford Authority, the frunk shrunk by some 40% for the 2025 model year after Ford added a new heat pump, and at the time, the Blue Oval was already saying that most buyers were barely using the space. Mitsubishi Brings Its Original Dakar-Winning Pajero Back to Life After 40 Years
A Dakar Icon, RevisitedThe Dakar Rally is as tough as motorsport gets. It throws everything at a vehicle – deserts, mountains, rocks, and jungle. Back in 1985, the event stretched over 22 days and 6,390 miles, with 4,650 miles of that spent racing the clock in special stages. The route even forced teams to cross the Ténéré Desert twice, just to prove a point. Out of 362 starters, Mitsubishi’s Pajero took the win – its first overall Dakar victory. Called the Montero or Shogun elsewhere, the Pajero built its reputation on results like this. That 1985 win kicked off a run that would see Mitsubishi rack up 12 Dakar wins, including seven in a row. Now, forty years later, Mitsubishi has gone back to the original Pajero prototype that started it all. Instead of just cleaning it up for a museum, the team set out to get the Dakar winner running again – just as it was when it finished the rally. Bringing a Champion Back to LifeAfter the 1985 rally, Mitsubishi shipped the Pajero prototype back to its R&D center in Okazaki, Japan. It sat there for years, battered from Dakar and untouched. According to Mitsubishi, the idea of getting it running again felt out of reach for a long time. That changed this year or 40 years after the win. Mitsubishi’s motorsport engineers – including veterans from both WRC and Dakar – took charge of the restoration. They stripped the Pajero down to the last bolt, checking every part for wear, damage, or anything that might have given up after decades in storage. They fixed what needed fixing, but kept things original wherever possible. The engine got a full overhaul, but no major parts were swapped out. It took a few tries, but they got it running again. Suspension, cooling, and electrics were brought back to working order, while the chassis, body, seats, and dash stayed as they were. But perhaps the best thing about this restoration is that Mitsubishi left the scratches and dents from Dakar untouched, so the Pajero still looks exactly like it did at the finish line. Mitsubishi View the 2 images of this gallery on the original article Looking Forward by Looking BackWe believe that this restoration isn’t just about looking back. As we all know, Mitsubishi has been reconnecting with its motorsport roots through Ralliart, and the timing isn’t a coincidence. There’s already talk of a new flagship SUV, and it looks like the Pajero name could be coming back – sooner rather than later. Restoring the original Dakar winner is Mitsubishi’s way of reminding everyone what the Pajero stood for. It also hints at what a new Pajero could be. Mercedes-Benz Marks 140 Years With Its Biggest Model Rollout Ever
Mercedes-Benz is lining up 2026 as a full-on anniversary year, stacking big historical milestones with what it calls the biggest product rollout in its history. The company will mark 140 years since Carl Benz patented his “vehicle with gas-engine drive” in 1886, 100 years since the Mercedes-Benz brand was created by the 1926 merger of Daimler and Benz, and 130 years since its first commercial vehicles. On top of that, it is celebrating 75 years of the crumple-zone “safety body” patent, 50 years since the W123 launched as the ancestor of today’s E-Class, and 20 years of the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart. From The First Car To 140 Years Of BenzThe headline date is January 29, 1886, when Benz filed the patent widely considered the birth certificate of the automobile. Mercedes is using “140 years of innovation” as a banner for museum events, special “Classics & Coffee” meets in Stuttgart, and partner exhibitions such as “Mercedes, The Story of the Star” at Autoworld Brussels, which will bring together everything from early three-wheelers to modern hypercars. Alongside that, the brand is spotlighting 130 years of vans and trucks, including early 1890s transporters, and 75 years since Béla Barényi’s safety-body patent laid the groundwork for crumple zones. It is the kind of historical sweep that helps explain why one enthusiast was able to assemble the ultimate Mercedes collection, spanning everything from classic sedans to modern AMG flagships. Sasha Lekach Centenary Of The Star Meets A New Model BlitzThe 1926 merger that created the Mercedes-Benz name gives the brand a clean “100 years of Mercedes-Benz” hook for 2026, and the company is timing a major product cycle to land at the same time. Internal plans call for dozens of new or updated models across its “Entry,” “Core,” and “Top End” segments over 2026 and 2027, including a new CLA family on an “electric-first” platform and fresh SUVs. Mercedes also plans to lean into G-Class milestones and commercial-vehicle anniversaries, using the moment to connect its EV truck and van plans back to 1890s delivery vehicles and decades of off-road history. The message is that the lineup is changing fast, but the company wants to frame it as evolution from a long-running story rather than a clean break. Classic AMGs And Future Classics In The SpotlightAnniversary programming will run alongside a strong collector market for both older and newer Mercedes performance cars. The W123’s 50th birthday is likely to push already rising values for clean examples, but attention is just as strong on modern two-door AMGs that are already being treated as future classics. Combined with curated auctions built around single-owner Mercedes collections and big heritage events at the museum and major shows, 2026 is shaping up as a year when the brand leans on its back catalog just as hard as it talks about new EVs and software-heavy flagships. 2011 Ferrari 458 Italia For Sale With 22,954 Miles And Nasty Liberty Walk Body Kit
Ferrari Purity vs. Liberty Walk ProvocationThe Ferrari 458 Italia occupies a special place in Maranello history. Introduced for the 2011 model year, it marked the brand’s transition into a new era of mid-engine V8 performance, pairing a naturally aspirated 4.5-liter engine with cutting-edge aerodynamics and a dual-clutch transmission. Even today, the 458 is widely regarded as one of the last “pure” modern Ferraris, celebrated for its sound, balance, and mechanical feel. That purity is precisely why Ferrari has long taken a hard stance on brand protection, especially when it comes to extreme modifications. Enter Liberty Walk, the Japanese tuning house famous for bolt-on widebody kits that dramatically alter factory designs. Liberty Walk doesn’t chase subtlety. With builds that are meant to provoke, spark debate, and dominate attention, they often walk a fine line between customization and controversy. On a Ferrari, that line becomes even sharper. Barrett-Jackson Inside the Barrett-Jackson Liberty Walk 458Crossing the Barrett-Jackson auction block is a 2011 Ferrari 458 Italia Liberty Walk Custom Coupe with 22,954 actual miles, which fully embraces that provocative philosophy. The car features a full Liberty Walk carbon-fiber, widebody conversion, complete with dramatically flared fenders that radically widen the Ferrari’s stance. The visual impact is immediate and impossible to ignore. According to the listing, the car retains its original 4.5-liter naturally aspirated V8 and 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, preserving the mechanical character that defines the 458. Supporting modifications include HRE wheels, an Air Lift suspension system for adjustable ride height, and a FI valved exhaust that amplifies the car’s already iconic soundtrack. The result is a Ferrari blending factory performance that's ready for both show and go. Barrett-Jackson No Budget Meal HereFrom a market perspective, the 458 Italia remains a strong performer. Clean examples typically trade between $200,000 and $300,000, depending on mileage, condition, and originality. While heavily modified Ferraris can divide buyers, custom builds have proven they can still bring serious money under the right circumstances. A notable example is a custom Ferrari 458 that sold for around $278,000 at a previous Barrett-Jackson auction, underscoring that rarity and execution can outweigh purist concerns. This Liberty Walk build isn’t aimed at traditional collectors. It’s aimed at buyers who want exclusivity, presence, and a Ferrari that stands apart from concours lawns and climate-controlled garages. What truly raises the stakes is that this Liberty Walk 458 is being offered with no reserve, meaning it will sell to the highest bidder, no matter where the hammer falls. That guarantees action on the auction floor and removes any pricing safety net. Whether it lands closer to stock-car money or charts its own path will depend entirely on who’s bidding. Jeep Walked Away From This Market in 2010—Now It’s Back
A New Chapter Begins in TaiwanJeep has officially returned to the Taiwanese market after 15 years. However, the American marque noted that this move is “not a continuation of the past but the beginning of a new chapter.” The press release did not explain why the brand left in 2010, but the decision may have been linked to financial challenges at the time. In 2009, Jeep’s parent company, then Chrysler, filed for bankruptcy following the 2008 global financial crisis—also known as the Panic of 2008—making international operations more difficult. Additionally, demand for Jeep vehicles in Taiwan was reportedly underwhelming, particularly in a market dominated by Japanese brands such as Toyota and Mitsubishi, which offered lower ownership costs, cheaper maintenance, and better fuel efficiency through smaller-displacement engines. Back From the WildernessToday, Jeep has returned to Taiwan in partnership with exclusive general distributor PG Union, saying it aims to bring the “spirit of American freedom” through the Wrangler. The iconic off-roader is being offered to Taiwanese buyers in two trims: Sahara and Rubicon. The Wrangler Sahara is geared toward city dwellers who may occasionally venture off-road. This trim features a suspension setup tuned more toward comfort, paired with a Selec-Trac 4x4 system that automatically switches between two-wheel and four-wheel drive based on road conditions. Meanwhile, the Wrangler Rubicon targets off-road enthusiasts with several rugged features, including a 4.0:1 low-range gear ratio, electronic locking differentials on both the front and rear axles, and a Rock-Trac 4x4 system. An Icon Leads the WayHowever, Jeep has only introduced the 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four in Taiwan, meaning the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 available in the U.S. did not make the cut. The power difference is relatively minor, with the inline-four producing 270 horsepower, just 15 hp less than the V6. Smaller-displacement engines also generally offer better fuel efficiency, which may align with Jeep’s strategy for the Taiwanese market. The American marque also stated that it will expand its network across Taiwan, including eight new showrooms and 17 authorized service centers. These efforts form part of Jeep’s long-term development plans in the country, alongside introducing a more complete lineup and promoting the lifestyle image the brand represents. While Jeep is getting a fresh start in Taiwan, the company exited China in 2022 due to “broken trust” and rising political concerns. New Analysis Suggests Toyota’s GR GT Could Hit 60 MPH in Under 3 Seconds
Cars Make Math More FunMath probably isn't everyone's favorite subject. But the reality is, numbers are what make some of the best cars out there truly memorable. Engineering isn't just throwing darts at a board and hoping for the best, but rather computing for the best possible solution... and hoping for the best. We have channels like Jason Fenske's Engineering Explained that simplify the seemingly dizzying world of automotive engineering by explaining things to us as if we were five years old. In many ways, he's managed to make us understand why certain cars are the way they are and appreciate what makes them good or promising. Dissecting the Toyota GR GTFor Fenske's latest video, he went on a deep dive with Toyota's flagship sports car, the GR GT. Based on specs and dimensions, he's given a few estimates, along with a few neat details that are worth pointing out. He went as far as comparing the GR GT to some of its stablemates like the GR 86, GR Corolla, and the recently discontinued GR Supra. He also went ahead and compared the Lexus LFA, Porsche 911 Turbo, and other similar sports cars. So, if you have about 15 minutes to spare, we say it's worth a watch. Toyota Smaller Than We ThinkTurns out, the GR GT is smaller than what the photos suggest. It's apparently about three inches shorter in height compared to the Honda S2000, so that puts things into perspective. He first determined the center of gravity using Toyota's official data and by measuring pixels. We'll spare you the details, but the computation was bang on Toyota's claim of a 45:55 weight distribution, as well as an estimated center of gravity of 20.4 inches. That's impressively low, but apparently not as low as the GR86 and Supra. Fenske suspects it's the high-mounted hybrid system that raised it, but it's still a good number nonetheless. Toyota Sub-3 Second 0-60 PossibleBased on center of gravity, horsepower, weight, and tire grip, Fenske computed the GR GT's possible 0-60 mph time. Assuming a high friction coefficient, it's estimated that the car can pull .95g while accelerating and can reach 60 mph in 2.9 seconds sans rollout. In less than ideal conditions, it could drop down to 3.2 seconds. Fenske reckons a more realistic figure between the low-to-mid threes due to the car's weight. As it's a front-engined car, it won't be able to lay down the power as well as, say, a Corvette ZR1. The ZR1 could still hold the advantage over the GR GT in the acceleration stakes, but the hybrid assist means it could get the jump on the 'Vette with more immediate response. Toyota Toyota Reliability ExpectedA couple of details Fenske pointed out were the parts fitted to the GR GT. By the looks of it, it relies more on mechanical parts to offer optimal performance. For instance, it has a mechanical, limited-slip differential rather than an electronic one, and the transaxle is positioned towards the rear for a more even weight distribution. But that's not all. We're assuming it has electronic dampers, but it's mated to trust coil springs. All aerodynamic components are passive, so there's no need for actuators in the spoilers, inlets, or outlets to increase weight and complexity. For the engine, it's both port and direct-injected, reducing the chances of carbon buildup that plagues direct-injection engines, therefore keeping performance consistent. The engine uses a straightforward overhead cam setup, and it uses a timing chain instead of a belt. Sure, Toyota could've saved a few grams by slapping on a belt, but this is a brand with a reputation to uphold. Speaking of which, we reckon the hybrid system won't be much of an issue given that Toyota has been cranking out hybrids for nearly 30 years now. With that, we're just scratching the surface of the car's engineering here. It's already pretty impressive, and it won't even be as expensive as its spiritual predecessor. Hyundai’s All-New Elexio Midsize Electric SUV Caught on Camera for the First Time
Hyundai’s China-developed Elexio electric SUV has been spotted in Australia for the first time, confirming that what started life as a China-only EV is now headed overseas. The midsize, five-seat model was photographed on a transporter in Melbourne, as per Cars Guide, wearing only light camouflage, and Hyundai has since confirmed it will launch locally in early 2026. Slotting between the Kona Electric and Ioniq 5 in size and price, the Elexio is built on an 800-volt architecture, uses BYD-supplied LFP battery packs, and is aimed squarely at value-focused family buyers rather than the hardcore performance crowd. View the 2 images of this gallery on the original article China-Built EV Heads for ExportThe Elexio is being assembled by Beijing Hyundai, the joint venture between Hyundai and BAIC, as the company’s first “designed in China, built in China, exported globally” EV. At about 4,615 mm long with a 2,750 mm wheelbase, it is very much a midsize SUV, larger than a Kona but smaller and more conventional-looking than an Ioniq 5. Underneath, it uses an 800-volt platform related to Hyundai’s existing E-GMP hardware, paired with 64.2-kWh and 88.1-kWh LFP batteries that promise more than 500 km of real-world driving on the bigger pack in markets using WLTP ratings. Single-motor front-drive versions should offer roughly 160 kW (around 215 horsepower), while dual-motor all-wheel-drive variants bump that to roughly 233 kW (about 312 horsepower). Fast charging from a low state of charge to a healthy buffer is claimed to take under half an hour on a high-power DC charger, and the car supports vehicle-to-load functions for powering tools or camping gear. The overall package is positioned as a family-ready crossover that undercuts premium rivals on price while still delivering the fast charging and usable range buyers now expect. Big Screen, Big Tech FocusInside, the Elexio leans hard into the tech angle. The dash is dominated by a slim, 27-inch widescreen display that combines driver information and infotainment, backed by a high-end processor and a full suite of connected services. Expect the usual Hyundai features like over-the-air updates, multiple drive modes and configurable regenerative braking, along with advanced driver-assistance systems that handle lane centering, adaptive cruise and automated parking in certain scenarios. Hyundai is treating the cabin as a showcase for its newest software and UX ideas in the same way its N division has become a test bed for enthusiast hardware. Where it Fits in Hyundai’s LineupIn Australia, Hyundai says the Elexio will sit between the Kona Electric and Ioniq 5, giving it a natural role as a mainstream family EV in a lineup that already stretches from small sedans to three-row SUVs. Buyers who need more seats or tow capacity will still be looking at gas-powered models such as the Palisade, while budget-conscious shoppers can stick with efficient compact sedans like the Elantra. Hyundai has not confirmed whether the Elexio will come to North America or Europe, but shipping a China-built, LFP-powered EV to Australia suggests it is at least testing the waters for a wider rollout. Even if it remains limited to a handful of right-hand-drive markets, the Elexio gives a clear picture of how Hyundai plans to fill the gap between its smallest crossovers and its more expensive dedicated EVs, using Chinese production and batteries to keep costs down while still pushing tech and charging speeds forward. This Limited Edition Porsche Is A Personal Tribute To The Inventor Of The 911
Some cherished objects are symbolic of the people we know and loveThroughout our interconnected lives, there are certain objects that become inseparable from the people we love. Maybe it’s your grandfather’s cool leather jacket, your mom’s favorite coffee mug, or a sport coat with a distinctive pattern that someone wore so often, it became part of their identity. These items carry memories, and when we see them, we’re transported back to moments spent with those who mattered most. They’re more than just possessions, items, or “things,” they’re time machines that transport us to people who shaped who we are. For Mark Porsche, the son of F. A. Porsche, his father’s favorite sport coat, a jacket woven with fabric in a distinctive pattern in black, green, truffle brown, cream, and Bordeaux red, has become one of those items that he associates with childhood memories of his dad’s home office, along with his father’s pencil, pipe, and ashtray. These seemingly small details painted a picture of a man dedicated to his craft, surrounded by the tools and textures that defined his working life. Now, decades later, some of these elements find new life in one of the most exclusive Porsches ever created, made as a fitting tribute to a man who changed the automotive world forever. Porsche View the 2 images of this gallery on the original article The iconic man behind the iconFerdinand Alexander Porsche, known simply as F. A., was born on December 11, 1935, into automotive royalty as the grandson of the company’s legendary founder. But unlike today’s “nepo babies”, he wanted to do right by his family name and make an impact. He carved out his own legacy by doing something extraordinary: he created the original 911, a recognizable silhouette that has remained largely unchanged since its introduction in 1964. Taking charge of Porsche’s design department in 1961 at the age of 26, F. A. brought a refreshingly simple and remarkably profound design philosophy and a pragmatic creativity shaped by his childhood experiences during World War II. “In those years, there were no toys to buy. So we imagined, designed, and built our own,” he later recalled. That hands-on, problem-solving approach translated directly into the clean, timeless lines that still define the 911 today. Beyond the Porsche 911, F. A. also created other automotive icons, including the Porsche 904 Carrera GTS, an uncompromising racing car with a glass-fiber-reinforced plastic body that was equally elegant. It went on to gain a class win at Le Mans and an overall win at the 1964 Targa Florio. The car later became the blueprint for all future GTS models and continues to define the DNA of these special Porsche variants. Porsche Design View the 2 images of this gallery on the original article But F. A.’s influence extended far beyond sports cars. In 1972, he founded Porsche Design with his brother Hans-Peter, initially in Stuttgart before moving to Zell am See, Austria, in 1974. This marked the beginning of a new era: applying the same precision and innovative spirit from automotive design to everyday products. “Design is not an end in itself; it must be explainable from a functional perspective,” he emphasized. The studio’s first creation became an instant classic: the Chronograph I. Released in 1972, it was the world’s first completely black wristwatch, inspired by the cockpit of the 911. Equally visionary was the P’8478 sunglasses in 1978—the first eyewear with an interchangeable lens system. Initially, Porsche Design anticipated selling 40,000 units, but in reality, millions were sold, making them a symbol of functionality meeting elegance. F. A. passed away on April 5, 2012, in Salzburg, Austria, but his philosophy endures as a testament to a man of clear words and form. “If you rethink the function of something, the form sometimes emerges almost by itself,” he once said. “Our creations should be lifelong companions, not subject to fleeting trends.” Porsche View the 6 images of this gallery on the original article A special birthday tributeTo commemorate what would have been F. A.‘s 90th birthday on December 11, 2025, Porsche’s Sonderwunsch Manufaktur has created something truly special: the 911 GT3 90 F. A. Porsche. Limited to just 90 units worldwide, with one going directly to Mark Porsche himself, this collector car is a rolling homage to the designer’s personal style. “I am sure that my father would have loved this very special 911,” Mark Porsche said. “Many details of this exciting project were influenced by his personal taste." The special edition is based on the current 911 GT3 with Touring Package, a more understated version of the race-bred sports car. Instead of a large wing spoiler, this special model features an adaptive rear spoiler and a 502-horsepower naturally aspirated boxer engine that produces 331 lb-ft of torque. However, the intricate details are where this tribute really shines. The exterior is finished in F. A. Green metallic, a custom Paint to Sample Plus color created with input from the Porsche family to reference F. A.’s own 911 in Oak Green metallic. In addition, a special set of Fuchs-style Sport Classic wheels in Satin Black, which are normally unavailable on the GT3 Touring, and vintage-style Porsche crests from 1963 on the center lock hubs add unique touches. A special badge on the rear decklid grille says "90 F. A. Porsche," marking this as something extraordinary. Porsche View the 5 images of this gallery on the original article Inside is a space that pays tribute to Mark’s childhood memories. The fabric of the seat centers is finished in a distinctive pattern of black, green, truffle brown, cream, and Bordeaux red, replicating the same fabric as Papa Porsche's favorite sports coat. The same fabric appears in the glove compartment and on the front trunk mat, which created a thorough and heartfelt tribute to the man. “My father’s favorite sport coat carried this pattern. Like his pencil, his pipe, and his ashtray, this coat is part of my childhood memories and directly linked with his home office,” Mark said. Other interior touches include Truffle Brown Club Leather with Limestone stitching, a Sport Chrono clock modeled after the original Chronograph I created as a one-off for F. A. himself, and a shift lever with an open-pore walnut handle. Multiple gold plaques throughout feature F. A.’s signature and the original 911 silhouette, while the dashboard includes a “one of 90” designation. Final thoughtsAccording to Porsche, each car will come with an exclusive edition of the Chronograph I watch, complete with F. A.‘s initials where the Porsche Design logo typically appears on the watch, just like his personal one. Additionally, the car comes with a special Porsche Design weekender bag. With an MSRP of $387,000 and production beginning mid-2026 following personalized customer consultations, this isn’t just a car, it’s a wearable, drivable tribute to a legendary man whose designs never age because they were never just fashionable. They were always simply right. View the full article

This Ultra-Rare Miata Was Rebodied to Look Like a Classic Jaguar
A Reimagined Roadster with European FlairThe Mazda Miata is widely regarded as the benchmark for lightweight sports cars, which helps explain why designers such as Mitsuoka have chosen to work on its platform. Spanish coachbuilder Hurtan also once got its hands on the Miata, though the finished product looked completely different from the Japanese roadster enthusiasts know. To mark Hurtan’s 30th anniversary in 2022, the company transformed the fourth-generation Mazda Miata ND into a classic European-style roadster reminiscent of the Jaguar XK120 and Alfa Romeo 6C. Reportedly limited to just six hand-built examples in Spain, the limited Miata-based conversion – called the Grand Albaycín – earned ultra-rare status, backed by high-end styling that could be customized. Hurtan Heritage Meets BespokeThe Hurtan Grand Albaycín 30th Anniversary Special Edition was offered in two configurations: Heritage and Bespoke. The Heritage trim focused on premium touches, while the Bespoke version leaned toward a sportier finish. Buyers could choose from three exterior colors – midnight blue, cherry red, or lead gray – with interior upholstery available in beige or tobacco brown. To mark the milestone, “30th Anniversary” badges were embroidered into the seats. Power came from Mazda’s 1.5-liter Skyactiv-G engine, producing around 129 horsepower. A larger 2.0-liter engine, also found in the U.S.-spec Miata, was available as well, making 181 horsepower. Power goes to the rear wheels through a six-speed manual, with an automatic option tied to certain 2.0-liter and Targa setups. Hurtan Time, Craft, and a Hefty PremiumHurtan said the manufacturing process took around six months. Pricing details for the special edition were never officially disclosed, though its rarity and customization suggest it commanded a premium over the standard Grand Albaycín. For reference, the regular Grand Albaycín with the 1.5-liter engine reportedly started at around €59,000 (about $69,300 at current exchange rates), while examples with the 2.0-liter engine began at roughly €82,300 (about $96,693). More recently, the Miata celebrated its 35th anniversary, dating back to the original NA generation known for its pop-up headlights. The current ND has been in production for nearly a decade, with rumors suggesting the next-generation Miata could involve a partnership with Toyota. Given Hurtan’s execution on the platform, a coachbuilt take on the next-generation Miata would be a welcome sight. Tesla Robotaxis Are About to Get a Lot More Upmarket
Tesla is all but guaranteed to miss its original claimed goal of launching the Cybercab by 2026, but the company is still making progress. While the Cybercab and the Robovan may still be some way from reaching public roads, Tesla appears to be getting closer to some sort of stopgap. The automaker was recently seen testing two different Model S sedans in California, both equipped with validation rigs previously used on the Model Y, which Tesla uses as a robotaxi while developing the aforementioned Cybercab and Robovan. This indicates that the Model S may soon be used as a robotaxi, offering a more upmarket feel to its service. Tesla's Version of Uber Black? Two Model S vehicles spotted in California with the same validation rig that Tesla has been using on their Model Y’s all over the U.S. pic.twitter.com/7WhC7OrhEY — Sawyer Merritt (@SawyerMerritt) December 11, 2025 As noted by Teslarati, it appears that Tesla may be preparing to launch a more premium alternative to its existing robotaxi service, much like Uber offers Uber Black and Lyft has Lyft Black for those who want a slightly more luxurious trip. Arriving in a sleek sedan is arguably better than doing so in a tall SUV, after all. Presumably, Tesla is preparing to use the Model S in small numbers initially, and if enough customers take advantage of its availability, the relatively slow-selling sedan could see more widespread use. Related: Rivian’s Real Tesla Killer May Be a Chip, Rather Than a Car Of course, without any official announcement from Tesla, this is just speculation. Tesla may well be using the rigs atop these sedans for another purpose, such as improving its Full Self-Driving (Supervised) semi-autonomous driver aid. Whatever the case, Tesla is facing more competition in the technology race than ever before. Tesla Has a Fight on Its Hands Sawyer Merritt/X Mercedes-Benz recently showed off the upcoming S-Class as a robotaxi in Abu Dhabi, while Rimac-backed Verne just revealed a full fleet of robotaxis that is ready to begin testing. Meanwhile, Waymo robotaxis have made the news of late for achieving self-driving on highways, and the service is expanding into new cities. All of these entities have numerous challenges ahead, but it's clear that competition is heating up and progress is being made. Even Rivian is aiming to become a serious player in the self-driving space, which adds another rival to the retail arena, and it could someday decide to move into a robotaxi service of its own with future, more affordable products like the R3. Thus, the more data a company like Tesla can collect and the more variety of services it can offer to prospective clients, the greater chance it will have of success in this highly competitive space. The Most Expensive 2026 Toyota RAV4 Costs As Much As a Lexus RX Hybrid
2026 Toyota RAV4's Online Configurator Goes LiveThe 2026 Toyota RAV4 continues to play it safe in the best possible way. It’s still one of the most well-rounded compact SUVs on sale, balancing efficiency, practicality, and everyday comfort without chasing trends. In Limited Hybrid form, the RAV4 leans heavily into refinement, pairing its proven 2.5-liter hybrid powertrain with standard all-wheel drive for confident all-weather driving. Power delivery is smooth rather than exciting, but that’s precisely the point. Inside, the RAV4 Limited focuses on usability and tech rather than flash. SofTex seating, a digital instrument cluster, and Toyota’s latest infotainment interface headline a cabin designed to survive daily abuse. Ride quality remains compliant, road noise is well managed, and cargo space remains among the best in the segment. It’s a sensible crossover at heart, even before things get wildly out of hand at the configurator. Toyota This RAV4 Build ExplainedStarting with a $43,300 RAV4 Limited Hybrid AWD, this build spirals quickly. Nearly every factory option is checked, from Ruby Flare Pearl paint to the 20-inch wheel package and a 10-inch head-up display. Then come the accessories. And then more accessories. And then an entire outdoor lifestyle store bolted onto the car. RAV4 Limited Hybrid AWD Base $43,300 Factory Options & Accessories $13,907 Dealer Installed Accessories $12,769 Delivery & Processing $1,450 Total As Built $69,976 What pushes this build into absurd territory isn’t just protection films and illuminated trim, but the dealer-installed gear. Dual ARB fridge/freezers, multiple Pelican coolers, Yakima cargo baskets, recovery kits, bike mounts, hammocks, dog accessories, and camping furniture transform the RAV4 into an overlanding cosplay machine. The result is a compact crossover that costs like a luxury SUV. Toyota USA What Else Costs This Much?At nearly $70,000, this RAV4 finds itself in unexpected company. You could be shopping for a Lexus RX Hybrid,BMW X3 xDrive30e, Audi Q5 Prestige, or even entry-level luxury EVs. Some body-on-frame SUVs and lightly used luxury sedans also sit in this price range, offering more power, prestige, or size. The difference is intent. Those vehicles justify their price through performance, branding, or premium materials. This RAV4 justifies it through sheer accumulation. It’s not faster, bigger, or more luxurious than its rivals. It’s simply, fully loaded, plus a warehouse of accessories. Michael Simari | Car and Driver The $70,000 RAV4 Reality CheckThis build proves just how far modern configurators can go when restraint is removed. The 2026 RAV4 Limited Hybrid remains an innovative, efficient, and dependable crossover, but no amount of illuminated badges or recovery gear changes what it fundamentally is. At its core, this is still a compact SUV designed for suburbia. That said, there’s something oddly fascinating about it. This RAV4 isn’t rational, and it’s not meant to be. It’s a reminder that value is subjective, and with enough accessories, even Toyota’s most sensible SUV can wander into luxury-car pricing territory. Whether that’s impressive or ridiculous depends entirely on how often you plan to use that second fridge. Toyota View the full article

Don’t Expect a Track-Focused Ferrari Amalfi—Here’s Why
A Familiar Ferrari UpgradeFerraridoesn’t exactly lack excitement, but for those who want something even sharper, there’s usually an upgrade. That’s where the Assetto Fiorano package comes in. It’s the track-focused option, which means lighter parts, stiffer suspension, and hardware built for serious lap work, taking cues straight from Ferrari’s own Fiorano test track. That familiar formula won’t apply to the new Ferrari Amalfi. While the Roma’s successor is quicker and more technically advanced, Ferrari has confirmed there will be no more extreme, track-ready variant. According to the company, the Amalfi’s role in the lineup simply doesn’t suit the Assetto Fiorano treatment. Ferrari The Amalfi Isn’t Meant for Hardcore DutiesAt the Amalfi’s launch in Australia, Ferrari made it clear that there’s no Fiorano-style package coming. When asked, the answer was a straight no. According to Amalfi product marketing manager Mattia Meggiorin, this segment is all about balance. “Usually, for this positioning of cars, we do not develop a Fiorano pack,” Meggiorin told Drive. He added that the Amalfi is designed to be “a very sporty car on one side,” while still being approachable enough for new Ferrari customers. The goal, he said, is a car that can be driven easily and confidently at lower speeds, not something built “on purpose” for race track use. That doesn’t mean the Amalfi is soft. Its twin-turbo V8 now puts out around 631 horsepower, good for a claimed 0-62 mph in 3.3 seconds, and it revs higher than the Roma. Ferrari also gave it the same ECU as the 296, the latest Side Slip Control 6.1, and new magnetorheological dampers that react faster thanks to updated hardware and software. Ferrari Where Assetto Fiorano Still LivesIf you want something more aggressive, you’ll have to look elsewhere, away from the Amalfi. The SF90 Assetto Fiorano is still Ferrari’s wildest road-going hybrid, dropping weight with carbon fiber and running suspension tuned for the track. It’s loud, sharp, and built for drivers who put performance first. Meanwhile, the 296 GTB Assetto Fiorano takes a similar approach, just in a smaller, mid-engine package. Lightweight parts, stiffer suspension, and Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires make the already quick 296 feel much closer to a true track car. Czinger 21C Obliterates Koenigsegg's Laguna Seca Lap Record
Over the past year and a half or so, Koenigsegg and Czinger have been trading blows in a fight for the outright production car lap record at the famed Laguna Seca Raceway in California. Each armed with multi-million dollar hypercars with four-figure horsepower outputs, the two boutique automakers have been battling for supremacy with the finest of margins. For example, the time set by the Jesko Attack last year (1:24.86) was just 0.58 seconds ahead of the time set by the 21C in 2021, and when the Swedes' Sadair's Spear took to Laguna Seca last month (with a time of 1:24.16), it only shaved seven tenths from Koenigsegg's best previous time. Now, Czinger has returned to stake its claim, and this time, it's set a record that isn't just a few fractions quicker, taking a massive 1.8 seconds out of the Sadair's Spear's best effort with a time of 1:22.30. You can watch the Race Logic-verified lap record at the bottom of this article. A Well-Used Hypercar With a Hyper Time Czinger Vehicles Czinger used the same 21C that set five records in five days driving between each track in the California Gold Rush Rally, so the concept of this extraordinary hypercar has been proven reliable. With Joel Miller at the wheel and Michelin Cup 2 R rubber on its wheels, the 21C has now set a benchmark that will be tough to beat, but we suspect Koenigsegg will try to do just that. When the Sadair's Spear hit the track last month, it achieved its time while being hampered by an enormous muffler so as to meet Laguna Seca's 99dB noise limit. In addition, the limited-edition hypercar was wearing magnesium wheels, not its regular and lighter carbon fiber rims, because those were the only ones Koenigsegg had on hand that were shod with new rubber. Related: 3 Reasons Why Hypercar Makers Should Worry About Czinger’s 21C While that suggests Koenigsegg could go a fair bit quicker than it already has, Czinger Founder and CEO Lukas Czinger told us in an interview that its car met the same noise restrictions without any modifications. It's also worth noting that the 21C (with a 2.88-liter twin-turbo V8 paired with two electric motors) produces some 350 horsepower less than the Sadair's Spear (1,250 hp in the 21C vs. 1,603 hp in the SS). More to Come from Czinger Czinger Vehicles View the 2 images of this gallery on the original article Lukas Czinger also told us that the 21C's exceptional time was "closer to our simulations," which seems to be a hint that there may still be more time to be cut from the record, if necessary. Granted, he did say that conditions and temperatures were close to optimal, but still, this is an astonishing feat. Given that Laguna Seca is just 2.238 miles long, and even if Czinger doesn't improve its time any further, it's going to be tough for the rear-wheel-drive Sadair's Spear to make up a difference of almost two seconds. We also asked Lukas about future plans, and while he kept his cards close to his chest, he did indicate that the Czinger team is still interested in heading to Europe (and likely the Nürburgring) in 2026. The 21C V Max may also see some top speed action in the not-too-distant future, and if any 21C Blackbird owners are willing to let their 1-of-4 hypercars take part in the conflict, even more lap records could soon tumble. Stay tuned. View the full article

NHRA To Kick off 2026 Countdown to Championship with Debut at U.S. 131 Motorsports Park
NHRA officials announced today that U.S. 131 Motorsports Park will have a Mission Foods Drag Racing Series event in 2026, with the inaugural NHRA Great Lakes Nationals set to open the 2026 Countdown to the Championship playoffs. The event will take place Sept. 18-20 at the standout facility in Martin, Mich., serving as the 15th of 20 races during NHRA’s special 75th anniversary season and the first of six playoff races. Tickets go on sale for the inaugural NHRA Great Lakes Nationals on Feb. 1. It marks the first NHRA national event at U.S. 131 Motorsports Park, giving NHRA four new national event facilities during the 2026 campaign and further displaying NHRA’s growth during the special milestone season that includes a premier list of national event tracks in 19 markets across the country. “Hosting an NHRA national event underscores our continued commitment to excellence, safety, and delivering unforgettable motorsports entertainment,” U.S. 131 Motorsports Vice President of Operations Jason Peterson said. “We are honored to welcome the NHRA, its competitors, sponsors and fans, and we look forward to showcasing our facility, our staff and our passionate racing community that makes this region so special.” The first two races in the Countdown to the Championship will be at two new facilities in the Mission Foods Drag Racing Series, as the Great Lakes Nationals in Martin, Mich., is followed by a trip to historic Rockingham Dragway for the NHRA Nationals at The Rock. VIN 001 and 002: Ultra-Rare Hurst Dodge Vipers Are Being Sold As A Pair
Only 2 of 50 Ever MadeBack in 2008, Hurst celebrated its 50th anniversary by teaming up with longtime and frequent collaborator Dodge to build a limited run of special 2008 Vipers. Dubbed the, er, Viper Hurst 50th Anniversary Edition, only 50 were ever made, and two of them will be up for sale at the Barrett-Jackson auction in Scottsdale, Arizona. But what makes this sale particularly special is the VIN of these two cars. What you're looking at here are the first two cars made in the series. Oh, and the car will be sold as a pair, by the way. You can't have one or the other. VIN 001 and 002The first two Hurst Vipers are the only ones of their kind to be draped in Flat Gold with black stripes. VIN 001 is the coupe, while VIN 002 is the convertible. Both have barely driven mileage: 813 miles for the coupe and just 209 miles for the top-down. The pair also has a dash plaque that certifies their authenticity. The first owner of both cars was Tammy Allen. She is a known collector, and she had a museum for her collection from 2010 to 2015 — Allen Unique Autos in Colorado. However, she closed it following the sudden death of her only son and her mother's cancer diagnosis. She sold off several cars through Barrett-Jackson, including these Vipers. Barrett-Jackson Truly SpecialThese are truly unique examples of the Viper, and one could say they're special one-offs if they get the pair. But what else makes these serpents extra special over the regular models? Aside from their rarity, Barrett-Jackson says the Hurst Vipers came with Corsa exhaust systems, black polished wheels, Motion Club Sport adjustable coilovers, and Eibach springs. It wouldn't be a Hurst edition without the pistol-grip shifter, and there are also decals on the outside plus special embroidery inside. Both cars' 8.4-liter V10s have been left untouched, but we're not complaining. The legendary power plant still packs a wallop in stock form, punching out 600 horsepower and 560 lb-ft of torque. Of course, all Vipers came with an honest-to-goodness six-speed manual gearbox for proper old-school thrills. By the way, this generation of Viper didn't come with stability control or other forms of traction aids, so its main safety feature is, quite literally, driver skill. Barrett-Jackson Buy Two, Get ThreeThe matte gold Vipers aren't the only ones you get if you end up being the winning bidder. You also get to bring home a third car, although we're not entirely sure if it's street-legal. It's a Viper-bodied go-kart, perfectly complementing the real deal. More specifically, it's a first-gen-bodied Viper go-kart. It's a generation off, but it does have the same matte gold-and-black color combo as its road-going siblings. Even the Hurst logos are present on the go-kart, as well as the five-spoke wheels. All this talk about the Viper is making us wish SRT was still around. Then again, Stellantis is plotting a return of the brand in the near future. Possible Viper revival, anyone? One can hope, but until then, we'll be looking at the older examples.
