Sony Honda’s New Electric Sedan Will Launch With Digital License Plates and Built-In Theft Alerts
Sony Honda Mobility will offer digital license plates as an official accessory on the upcoming Afeela 1 electric sedan, making it one of the first production cars to launch with a factory-backed electronic plate option. The system comes via a partnership with Reviver, the company behind the RPlate, and is set to be available when the Afeela 1 reaches early customers in 2026. It is another example of how Sony and Honda are using the car’s connected platform to add services on top of the core EV hardware that is already entering pre-production at Honda’s Ohio operations. Digital Plates as a Connected AccessoryThe Reviver RPlate replaces a conventional metal tag with a monochrome digital display integrated into the rear plate surround. Owners manage registration, renewals and custom text via a connected smartphone app, and the plate hardware includes LTE connectivity, GPS and anti-tamper features. In supported states, drivers can skip physical stickers and some DMV visits, while the connected back end can push special messages such as a “stolen” status if the car is reported missing. For Afeela buyers, the digital plate will be installed and supported through Sony Honda Mobility’s accessory program rather than being a third-party add-on, fitting the broader approach of the new electric sedan. Limited Rollout, High-Tech PositioningReviver plates are only fully approved for private motorists in a handful of U.S. states, so availability will depend on where an Afeela is registered. Even so, Sony Honda Mobility clearly sees value in making the hardware part of the official options list from day one, alongside the sedan’s extensive driver-assistance, infotainment and over-the-air update capabilities. The Afeela 1 itself is pitched as a mid-size electric sedan with dual-motor all-wheel drive and a tech-heavy interior built around large displays and high compute power, raising the question of how it will stack up against established rivals. Sony Honda Mobility Convenience, Customization and Privacy QuestionsFactory-backed digital plates could appeal to early adopters who like the idea of remote registration, theft alerts and customizable displays that can show approved slogans or messages along the bottom of the plate. At the same time, bolting a connected, trackable device to the outside of the car raises familiar concerns about privacy and cybersecurity, especially when it is tied into an app ecosystem and cloud services. Sony Honda Mobility’s decision to offer the RPlate as an accessory on the Afeela 1 puts those questions on the table from launch, and gives buyers one more futuristic touch on an EV that is already trying to distinguish itself as much with software and services as with traditional specs. Inside the Factory That Has Built Porsche's Iconic Sports Car For Decades
Where Legends Still Clock InThe Porsche 911 has changed a lot over the years, and the modern version even comes with a hybrid-assisted powertrain. But one thing has stayed the same – every 911 has always been built at Porsche’s Zuffenhausen plant in Germany. Thanks to YouTube's FRAME, we now get a behind-the-scenes look at how this iconic sports car comes to life inside the factory, on a site spanning more than 6.6 million square feet. In 2024, Porsche delivered 50,941 units of the 911, slightly higher than the previous year’s output. The U.S. market, however, saw a far sharper rise, recording more than a 20 percent increase in 911 sales. Its popularity stems from its reputation as a performance benchmark, consistently measured against rivals such as the Mercedes-AMG GT, Nissan GT-R, and Ferrari 296 GTB. Shaping a 911Each 911 starts on Zuffenhausen’s mixed-material production line, where an army of robotic arms manipulates stamped metal panels and structural components to form the timeless coupe silhouette. Conveyors shuttle the body-in-white across various stages, including the anti-corrosion immersion bath. After the dip, soft-brush robots clean the panels to prepare them for paint. Highly controlled spray booths then apply primer, base coat, and clear coat, after which quality-control inspectors examine the finish under high-intensity light tunnels to spot imperfections. Once the painted shell passes inspection, human craftsmanship becomes more prominent. Technicians install interior components, wiring harnesses, seats, windows, lighting elements, and structural pieces. They also carry out the “marriage” process, where the powertrain is joined to the body. FRAME on YouTube Under the Hood, Things Get SeriousPorsche offers several engine options, starting with a 3.0-liter twin-turbo flat-six in the base Carrera. The Carrera S increases output to 473 horsepower, while the new T-Hybrid system pairs a 3.6-liter single-turbo flat-six with electric assistance for a combined 532 hp. Higher up the range, the GT3 and GT3 RS use a 4.0-liter naturally aspirated flat-six, with the RS adding an F1-style DRS wing. The previous 3.7-liter twin-turbo flat-six has been replaced in the 992.2 mid-cycle refresh by a new 3.6-liter hybrid-ready engine architecture, which produces 701 hp in the range-topping 911 Turbo S, making it the most powerful 911 ever built. The Zuffenhausen plant also builds the 718 and the all-electric Taycan. It even housed a dedicated production hall for Porsche’s hybrid hypercar, the 918 Spyder. Other models, such as the Panamera and Macan, are assembled at Porsche’s Leipzig facility, while the Cayenne is built at a Volkswagen plant in Slovakia. New Nürburgring-Developed Exhaust Upgrades Give Hyundai’s N Cars a Sharper Edge
Hyundai’s N division has gone from left-field upstart to serious hot-hatch and sport compact rival, and now the aftermarket is catching up. UK-based Milltek Sport has launched a full range of performance exhausts for Hyundai’s core N models, with systems for the i20 N, i30 N, Kona N, Elantra N and Veloster N. The line covers road-legal and track-only setups, all developed in-house and at the Nürburgring, and is aimed squarely at owners who want more sound and sharper response without turning their daily driver into a race car. It also lands as Hyundai broadens its enthusiast footprint, from full-electric performance models built on the same platform as those featured in current Ioniq 5 lease deals to increasingly expressive mainstream crossovers. View the 2 images of this gallery on the original article Full-Fat N Models Get Dedicated SystemsMilltek’s catalog is designed specifically for “true” N cars rather than N Line trims, reflecting how serious many owners are about track days and back-road driving. Each system is tailored to the engine and layout of its host model, rather than using a one-size-fits-all design, and buyers can choose between EC-approved street systems and freer-flowing motorsport versions. Depending on the car, there are valved and non-valved options, along with a spread of tailpipe finishes that runs from polished stainless and Cerakote black to titanium and carbon fiber. The company says much of the development work happened at its Nürburgring facility, an approach that mirrors Hyundai’s own habit of proving dynamic ideas in the real world. This is the brand that built the wildly flexible MobED mobility platform, so it is no surprise that N owners are being offered equally engineered upgrades for their exhausts. View the 3 images of this gallery on the original article Sound, Performance and The Bigger N PictureMilltek talks more about character than raw numbers, promising improved gas flow, reduced back pressure and crisper throttle response, along with a deeper, more aggressive tone that still works for everyday commuting in the right configuration. For many N drivers, the appeal is refining what is already there, Hyundai’s factory cars are known for their pops and bangs, configurable drive modes and a playful edge that stands out in a class full of polished but sometimes muted rivals. The growing list of upgrades also underlines how fast Hyundai has built a halo around N. On one side, it is pushing rugged looks and lifestyle appeal on models like the new Tucson XRT. On the other, it is preparing a future where EVs with simulated exhaust notes sit alongside turbocharged gasoline N cars with hardware like these Milltek systems. For now, the new exhaust range gives owners of some of Hyundai’s most entertaining combustion models another way to personalize their cars while the brand’s performance story continues to evolve. Rare 1969 Dodge Charger 500 Hemi in Pristine Condition for Sale With 50,841 Miles
This beautifully restored Dodge Charger 500 is finished in Dark Bronze Metallic on a perfectly preserved saddle interior, and features original matching numbers for the 426 cubic inch 425 horsepower Hemi V8 engine and A833 4-speed manual transmission. It is equipped with the Dana HD SureGrip limited-slip differential, dual four-barrel carburettors, NASCAR-derived internals, high-flow exhaust, power steering, and power brakes. Mecum View the 2 images of this gallery on the original article A Rare FindBy most accounts, 392 units of the Dodge Charger 500, based on the Charger R/T and modified by Creative Industries for Dodge with the flush grille and rear window that eliminated the recessed flying buttress design for better aerodynamics, were built in 1969. 67 of these were endowed with the Chrysler 426 Hemi V8, and only 27 came with the four-speed manual transmission. This is therefore a very rare example of a car that had a massive cultural impact in its time, and is sure to demand top dollar at auction. Mecum A Sight to BeholdThe body panels you see in these pictures are the ones the car left the factory with in 1969. The gleaming exterior has been professionally repainted in the factory-correct T5 Dark Bronze Metallic shade, with that unmistakable white tail stripe. The exterior features Charger script emblems, Hemi door emblems, and Dodge Charger 500 model insignia. Lower down, color-matched steel wheels with small-diameter hubcaps and white-striped tyres complete the period-correct look of what was one of the most powerful production cars of its time. Rolls-Royce’s Smallest Car Just Got a 696-HP Attitude Adjustment
Modifying a Rolls-Royce could be considered a cardinal sin for some, but Novitec's Spofec division has just proven that it can be done tastefully. Spofec specializes exclusively in modifying the ultra-luxury British brand's creations, and its latest release is for the Ghost Series II, giving Goodwood's smallest sedan a big boost in power and some subtle aesthetic tweaks. Equipped as standard with a 6.75-liter twin-turbocharged V12 engine developing 563 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque, the facelifted Ghost is far from slow, but Novitec still decided to massage the power plant to the tune of 696 hp and 739 lb-ft of torque. As a result, the company has shaved half a second from the 0-62 mph sprint (4.8 seconds as standard), though the top speed remains unchanged at 155 mph "to protect the tires." Elegant Aesthetic Upgrades Novitec View the 2 images of this gallery on the original article Along with an optional Spofec stainless steel exhaust with active butterfly valves to give the massive V12 more presence, Novitec also offers "OEM quality" aerodynamic enhancements, starting with a whole new front fascia with larger air intakes and vertical LED running lights. Novitec claims that this reduces front axle lift at high speeds, while the trunk lid spoiler balances the slightly more aggressive look. The rear fascia is also new and can be had with or without cutouts for the exhaust tips, and Spofec rocker panels complete the transformation. They also make the car look a little lower, but those who want a physically lower stance can also opt for a suspension kit that drops the car by around 35 millimeters all around. Related: Lamborghini Urus SE Transformed by Dramatic 800-HP Widebody Kit Filling the arches are a set of 22-inch Spofec SP4 forged alloy wheels developed in collaboration with Vossen. These measure 9.5 inches wide at the front and 10.5 inches wide at the rear and are wrapped in 255/35 and 285/30 tires, respectively. For those who haven't depleted their trust funds just yet, the tuner also offers interior upgrades, though it doesn't say what these are. Novitec Has Form Modifying Rolls-Royces Novitec This isn't the first Rolls upgraded by Novitec's Spofec division. Back in August, the German tuner known for its work on Ferraris of various descriptions turned its attention to the Rolls-Royce Cullinan with a widebody kit and similar performance enhancements, and last month, it added carbon fiber body panels and custom Vossen wheels to the all-electric Spectre. With this Ghost Series II, Spofec seems to have found a groove for its builds that is far from offensive, though the black paint admittedly helps these tuned Rolls-Royces look sleeker than they otherwise might. As for pricing, if you have to ask, you can't afford it. View the full article

Genesis Might Actually Build the G90 Wingback—A Full-Size Luxury Wagon America Didn’t See Coming
More Wagons, PleaseIn many ways, it's our fault that wagons fell out of favor. We mostly abandoned them in the 2000s, and the very few that remained at that time weren't snatched up by many. Automakers gave us many chances to buy them, but the majority of the buying public had their eyes (and wallets) glued to SUVs. Heck, even minivans, the first cars that triggered the decline of wagons in America, are also being left in the dust by crossovers. There is, however, a glimmer of hope. The performance wagon genre has been welcomed with open arms in North America, reigniting interest in wagons in general. Perhaps that's because we finally have what we've been longing for, as well as the fact that we're finally getting the good stuff from abroad. Sure, it's a niche, but it's a niche that's been doing well for itself. And Here Comes GenesisGenesis is still on a high after debuting its Magma performance division. It included a hot GV60, the Magma GT Concept mid-engined sports car, an M5-rivalling G80, and the G90 Wingback. It was, in our words, a full-size wagon no one saw coming, and there have been hints that it might actually reach production. But the tease didn't stop there. More recently, Genesis published more photos of its concept wagon, and they're glorious, indeed. They even threw in a pair of pictures of the interior, something that wasn't shown during its world premiere a few weeks ago. Promising SignsApart from the photo set, Genesis made more hints that they're serious about bringing the G90 Wingback into showrooms. One particular quote in a press release from Genesis Chief Creative Officer Luc Donckerwolke caught our attention. "At the moment there is, let’s say, a multiplication of SUVs. And this fast growth will create a saturation. This is when other typologies of cars are going to become attractive again. This is why I strongly believe in not having a typology monoculture," said Donckerwolke. Did he just indirectly say he's tired of all the crossovers and SUVs out there? There's more, too. The press release says, "The G90 Wingback Concept is more than a showpiece. It is the embodiment of a decade’s worth of innovation, accelerating into the next chapter of Genesis’ journey." And just to keep everyone's hopes up, Donckerwolke told Jalopnik that the wagon will be "relatively easy" to produce, as it practically has the same dimensions as the G90 sedan. This 1,000-HP Subaru WRX STI Hides a Toyota V12 Secret Laced with BMW
Not Your Average Hot HatchThis hot hatch may look like a Toyota GR Corolla at first glance, but there’s far more going on under the skin. John Proulx (@1lowrx on Instagram) owns this 2009 Subaru WRX STI, and it hides a power unit almost no one would expect: a 1GZ-FE V12 from a second-generation Toyota Century. That engine alone would be outrageous in an STI. Still, Proulx pushed things even further by adding a pair of G30-770 turbos, bringing output to a claimed 1,000 horsepower – roughly 700 hp more than the stock Century, a car originally built for quiet chauffeur duties before its ultra-luxury ambitions, not big-boost mayhem. To withstand the extra power, the V12 was fitted with upgraded internals, including forged rods, pistons, and valve springs. The Drivetrain Plot TwistThe changes didn’t stop at the engine bay, which used to house an EJ flat-four engine. The twin-turbo V12 is paired with a BMW dual-clutch transmission (DCT) sourced from a 2009 335i, connected using a custom-built adapter plate. The build also features a custom intercooler, oil cooler, intake manifold, and exhaust system, all of which help support the substantial performance increase. Subaru’s signature all-wheel-drive system is long gone. In its place is a rear-wheel-drive (RWD) conversion using a custom driveshaft and a Ford 8.8-inch rear end, the same differential family found in Mustangs and F-150s. Power goes to Weld Racing S71 wheels wrapped in Mickey Thompson drag radials, with the chassis riding on Cygnus Performance coilovers. And despite adding eight extra cylinders, two turbos, and a completely different drivetrain, Proulx says the car’s weight distribution remains close to stock. Corner-weight readings show it still sits around 59/41 (front/rear), likely achieved through careful component relocation and the additional rear mass provided by the custom axle setup. 1lowrx on Instagram Modding Without RestraintWith Subaru suggesting that any future STI halo model is likely to be fully electric, builds like this offer an interesting contrast for enthusiasts. The brand did preview both gasoline and EV concepts at this year’s Japan Mobility Show, suggesting it hasn’t finalized its direction yet. Regardless of what the future holds, projects like Proulx’s V12-swapped STI show that interest in traditional gas-powered performance remains strong. The owner also has other cars in his household, including a twin-turbo Coyote V8-swapped Forester with a Mustang badge and, fittingly, a Toyota GR Corolla – the very car this STI could be mistaken for. Larry Larson, Lyle Barnett Secure First Two Invites For 2026 King of The South Invitational
Earlier this year, Larry Larson put the small-tire world on notice, defeating Lyle Barnett in the final round of the $75,000 King of the South invitational, headlining the Ronnie Buff Memorial weekend at Shadyside Dragway in Shelby, North Carolina. During the opening day of PRI in Indianapolis, KotS promoter Corey Stamper and Shadyside Dragway co-owner Seth Buff officially extended invitations to both Larson and Barnett for the 2026 edition of the event, taking place May 21-24. Both drivers accepted, filling the first two spots in the 64-car, invite-only field of cars competing on 28×10.5 non-w slicks for another $75k. Larson has only gained momentum since his KotS victory back in May, most recently winning the $40,000 True 10.5 N/T class at the Snowbird Outlaw Nationals presented by Motion Raceworks at Bradenton Motorsports Park. It’s been a dream season for the chassis-builder out of Oak Grove, Missouri, who originally made it into Kots earlier this year as an alternate. “I wasn’t even invited last year,” said Larson. “They had some people drop out and Corey gave me an invite. I just went down there to see if I could learn something.” Barnett, meanwhile, will be looking for a little bit of payback behind the wheel of the Tommy Youmans-owned “Salvage Title” Mustang. After losing to Larson by a miniscule .004 margin of victory in 2025, Barnett is hoping to go one round further in 2026 at what he deems his hometown track. “Shadyside is home to me,” Barnett said. “I live 35 minutes from the track. I’ve won a bunch of Corey’s Carolina Cash Days in Beer Money, and when King of the South became a reality, I told him no matter what, I wanted in. “I’ll be honest, when I rolled into the final against Larry, I thought I had him covered,” Barnett continued. “And I did until about 330 ft., and then I watched that Harts Charger just walk away from me. Larry’s a good friend, and if we can manage to stay away from each other in the early rounds at Shadyside, I’d love to see him late in the race and see if we can duplicate that final round – just swap who gets to hold the trophy.” In addition to the hugely popular Small-Tire invitational, Stamper is adding something new for 2026 – the $10,000 Knight of the South class, featuring a 16-car invitational on even smaller 26×8.5 slicks. KotS looks to once again be one of the biggest events of the year in 2026, building off their 2025 edition that sold out Shadyside and forced the fire marshal to close the gates on Saturday due to a record crowd. Track owners Seth and Zach Buff continue to build on their family’s legacy, giving racers a local “outlaw” feel that can’t be found at larger facilities. “It means so much to us to have this caliber of drivers at our small track,” said Seth Buff. “It’s so surreal for us. During that weekend, I woke up and said, ‘This is unreal.’ It’s an amazing show they put on, and we appreciate them.” Invitations will continue going out in the coming weeks. Fans can stay up to date on whether their favorite drivers will make the cut by following Spoold Media on social media outlets. This story was originally published on December 13, 2025. Study: Over Half Of Drivers Say Losing CarPlay Is A "Deal Breaker"
In-car connectivity is a must these daysLike most drivers, one of the first things you do after purchasing a vehicle (or renting one) is sync your phone so you can use CarPlay or Android Auto. In-car navigation and messaging are essential, and automakers' services are not very good, at least compared to what Apple and Google are already doing. Why big auto hasn’t taken notes from CarPlay and Android Auto, we’ll never know. A new study shows that the ability to use CarPlay or Android Auto in our vehicles is actually crucial for most of us. Over half of CarPlay users say the platform is critical, and almost one-third say they’d switch auto brands if their current one lost access to Apple’s in-car infotainment platform. We could view this as smartphone platform brand loyalty, but the data underscores it’s more about how poorly automakers’ in-car systems are. James Riswick Drivers really love CarPlay and Android AutoA full 55% of drivers say a “lack” of CarPlay is a “deal-breaker.” 36% of Android Auto users feel the same. Out of context, you could say 55% of iOS users and 36% of Android users are just fanboys - but that would be misguided. When asked if they trusted whether an automaker could build an in-car system as good as Apple or Google, 31% of respondents to American Trucks' survey said “no.” 33% think automakers could build an equally good in-car infotainment system. In comparison, the majority - 36% - said they’re not sure. If we were advising big auto, we’d suggest that’s 67% of people who have little to no faith in software and firmware development coming from automakers’ offices. 49% of respondents would be willing to see how the proprietary in-car system performs, but 20% say they’d simply sell their car and buy one from another brand if CarPlay or Android Auto access is revoked. 30% say they’d just stick with the brand of car they have. 28% of CarPlay users would switch brands, while only 19% of Android Auto users say they’d jump ship. By the numbers: Who cares? If you thought Tesla’s recent adoption of CarPlay was critical, it might be - but not to existing Tesla drivers. Only 15% of Tesla owners say they need access to CarPlay or Android Auto. The only automaker that fares better is Dodge, with 11% of its drivers saying a lack of Android Auto or CarPlay is a deal-breaker. GMC (23%), Mercedes-Benz (33%), and Jeep (34%) round out the bottom five. On the opposite end of the spectrum, Audi owners care deeply about CarPlay and Android Auto. 71% of Audi owners say they’d leave the brand without those ancillary platforms, which is eight percentage points higher than second-place BMW (63%). Mazda (58%), Lexus (53%), and Buick (50%) round out the top five. Interestingly, sibling brands like Toyota and Lexus, or Kia and Hyundai, which essentially share platforms, rank differently in this survey. Lexus and Toyota, for example, have a 17% delta between them. Final thoughtsTesla owners might not care much about CarPlay and Android Auto, but GM drivers do. As the automaker plans to drop support for CarPlay and Android Auto, 35% of owners say they want to switch brands, while another 25% are unsure. 37% of non-GM owners say they’re less likely to buy a GM as a result. People may not have strong feelings about CarPlay Ultra, which has failed to catch on, but supporting Android Auto and CarPlay is clearly vital. View the full article

IHRA Announces Acquisition of Maple Grove Raceway
The International Hot Rod Association (IHRA) announced Friday its acquisition of Maple Grove Raceway. This 1,000-HP Dodge Charger Restomod Hides A Carbon Weave Used For Hypercars
Today's Parts, Yesterday's LooksIf there's one benefit of modern automotive technology, it's that creative builders can easily reimagine classics with it. Despite the value and discipline of sticking to the original spec, it is costly and often challenging to keep a classic in tip-top shape. That's where reverse-restomods come in. These special models were bred from the idea of using iconic design on a modern platform, resulting in a more reliable car with vintage looks. That's where Exomod comes in, and its latest project is the Prometheus. Ultra-Exclusive Carbon Fiber WeaveExomod is an American-based company that specializes in so-called retromods, which are pretty much what we've described above. In this case, the Exomod Prometheus uses the soul of the legendary 1968 Dodge Charger and mixes it up with the platform of the monstrous 2023 Dodge Charger Hellcat Redeye Jailbreak Last Call. The Prometheus is special for several reasons – chief among them is the "first-ever 4x4 hypercar-weave carbon fiber body" that hides beneath that iconic 1968 Charger design. This carbon weave is normally reserved for ultra-exclusive hypercars, but features in the Prometheus under a Kandy Apple Red paint job. There are modifications to the brand-new Charger Hellcat platform, thanks to fellow American Tuning house Hennessey Performance. The Prometheus gets a power bump from 807 to 1,000 horsepower and 948 lb.-ft from the stock 6.2-liter Hellcat V8. The 8-speed transmission was also tweaked, along with stainless long-tube headers, sports cats, and a custom active exhaust. A Collaborative EffortBeing a true retromod, the inside of the Prometheus is a familiar modern Dodge, with all the necessary creature comforts and features. Except the seat material being reskinned to Bespoke Havana & Chocolate leather interior with Old Gold diamond stitching. Project Prometheus is once again a showcase of vision and passion, with Exomod claiming that this was a "deeply collaborative effort with a visionary client whose hypercar collection inspired the team. Furthermore, the owner “pushed us to source this exceptionally rare carbon fiber weave to create a truly one-of-a-kind Charger.” View the 5 images of this gallery on the original article View the full article

Honda Prelude Type R Rumors Explode Online—Here’s the Real Story
Automotive enthusiasts are never satisfied. If Mazda launches a new Miata, people ask where the Mazdaspeed version with more power is. If Toyota updates the GR86, people clamor for a turbocharged variant. And now that Honda has revived the Prelude, people are asking about a Type R variant. Well, according to Japanese outlet Best Car, Honda is already working on not only a 1.5-liter turbo Type S with 182 horsepower for a debut in 2026, but also "considering" a Type R variant with the Civic Type R's 315-horsepower 2.0-liter engine. As enticing as those might be, is there any truth to this report? Let's consider the facts. Could a Prelude Type R Really Happen? Probably Not Mugen Unfortunately, Best Car has been known to spin a yarn every now and then, and although some of its reports have proven to be accurate, this one just doesn't add up. A little more than a month ago, Prelude development manager Tomoyuki Yamagami spoke with Australian media and said that equipping the car with the Type R's powertrain simply wouldn't suit its demeanor, saying, "it has a different direction from the existing Type R." Simply put, a Type R is hardcore, and a Prelude isn't. The fact that the new Prelude isn't available with a manual transmission is proof thereof, and given the exorbitant markups that some are charging for the existing coupe, we shudder to think what a Prelude Type R might cost, especially since making it work with the Civic Type R's engine is a much more complicated (read: expensive) process than simply transplanting an engine and gearbox. But don't fret too much - more performance may yet be on the way, albeit in a warmed-up Prelude rather than a hot one. A Prelude Type S Could Happen Mugen Only available in Japan, the fifth-generation Prelude was available in Type S and SiR.S Spec forms, and Yamagami-san suggested that the variant could return with its handling and performance upgrades, hinting that it's certainly possible. Presumably, this time around, it wouldn't be a JDM exclusive, but it's too early in the Prelude's lifecycle to be sure. In a nutshell, a Type S seems like something Honda has considered, while a Type R would be too costly to be feasible. That said, if Honda were working on a Type R, it wouldn't publicize the fact unnecessarily early. Who knows? Maybe those sources in Japan are real. Time will tell. In the meantime, a render from X-Tomi Design will have to do. View the full article

Rivian’s Real Tesla Killer May Be a Chip, Rather Than a Car
“If there’s a painted line and it’s clearly marked, you can drive hands-free,” once a new update for Rivian’s R1S and R1T battery-electric vehicles is released later this month, according to James Philbin, the automaker’s vice president of autonomy and AI. Related: Rivian’s New $2,500 Autonomy+ Package Undercuts Tesla FSD by Thousands Giving motorists access to 3.5 million miles of U.S. and Canadian roadways, that’s more 20 times the coverage Rivian currently offers – and nearly three times more than what General Motors’ latest Super Cruise update now can handle. But that’s just the beginning, Rivian officials said during a technology briefing on Thursday. When the new Rivian R2 debuts late next year it will offer “hands-free, eyes-off” driving. The automaker’s next step – perhaps as early as 2027 – will be “Level 4” capabilities, allowing Rivian vehicles to operate fully autonomously – in fact, entirely without a driver onboard. The secret to this rapid rollout? More advanced sensors, including one of the auto industry’s first applications of laser-based LiDAR, sophisticated new software and a new microprocessor developed entirely in-house that’s at least 10 times faster than what’s in use in Rivian’s current vehicle line-up. Whats New Plenty of automotive brands now offer some form of hands-free or assisted driving technologies: General Motors’ Super Cruise, Ford’s Blue Cruise, Nissan’s ProPilot Assist and, of course, Tesla’s original Autopilot and newer Full Self-Driving. Two things typical matter to owners: how well the systems work on different types of roads and the number of miles of roadway they can be operated on. Over the last several years, for example, Super Cruise has increased about five-fold, to 1.2 million this year. Currently, Rivian’s R1S and R1T models can manage a barely competitive 120,000 miles. With a simple, smartphone-style over-the-air update due before year-end, however, that will grow to 3.5 million. And that’s just the start for the EV maker. Related: I Drove the 2026 Rivian R1S Quad Motor Through the San Francisco Bay Area for a Week. Here's How it Went. But that’s just the beginning, during their presentation, Rivian officials revealed plans to aggressive upgrade the capabilities of their autonomous driving technology. Significantly, this should rapidly position the company as a serious competitor to Tesla, both in terms of retail systems and by allowing Rivian to start rolling out its own robotaxis, as its arch-rival began doing in Austin, Texas last June. Chipping In During a Thursday presentation, Rivian officials revealed the new software and hardware technologies that will make this possible, starting with its new chip. Developed entirely in-house, it “allows us to get the best performance for dollars spent,” said Vidya Rajagopolan, Rivian’s Senior Vice President of Electrical Hardware Engineering. She says the company has designed in “a lot of hooks and bells and whistles” that will make the new chip flexible and scalable and “functionally safe,” with the sort of backup capabilities needed when it operates a vehicle that might have no driver behind the wheel. From a functional standpoint, the new microprocessor can handle 800 TOPS. In lay speak, that’s 800 trillion operations per second, with a bandwidth of 205 gigabytes per second. More importantly, the processing system using this new chip will be more than able to handle all the data coming in from 11 cameras, five radar sensors and a new LiDAR unit, processing up to 5 billion pixels of data every second. Why that Matters Rivian “I expect that to be the most powerful combination of sensors and inference computing in consumer vehicles in North America,” boasted Rajagopolan. While the new computer chip is the critical lynchpin, the other big development that will debut on the Rivian R2 next year is the new LiDAR sensor mounted just above the forward-facing camera at the top of the windshield. LiDAR is a sort of 3D laser-based camera system which, Rajagopolan contends, will be essential to safe autonomous driving. That’s where Rivian and Tesla go head-to-head. The bigger EV manufacturer remains firm in its belief it can go completely driverless using only cameras and onboard processing – though most experts disagree and believe other sensors are needed, especially LiDAR and radar. “Cameras alone have some shortcomings,” asserted Rajagopolan, “They do not perform well under non-ideal lighting conditions,” such as fog, heavy rain or snow, or on especially dark roads. Rivi While the debate is likely to rage for some time, what will matter to potential Rivian buyers is the fact that adding the new sensors, processing power and software smarts will take the capabilities of the R2 to the next level. Literally, what the industry calls Level 3 autonomy. That’s often referred to as “hands-free/eyes-off” driving. Today, while many systems may allow you to take your hands off the wheel on designated roadways, motorists need remain vigilant, keeping eyes focused on the road and ready to take over at a moment’s notice. Level 3 systems let you turn your attention elsewhere: to text, for example, or even watch videos – though it’s not going to let you take a nap. Not yet. Going to the Next Level Rivian Rivian’s new hardware and AI technology – which it calls a “Large Driving Model” – are destined for still bigger things, according to CEO RJ Scaringe, who said they “will enable us to achieve dramatic progress in self-driving to ultimately deliver on our goal of delivering L4” driving. That’s pretty much the Holy Grail of autonomy, the ability to simply set a destination into your navi system and relax – even take that nap – while the vehicle does all the work without any more involvement by the “driver.” The automaker’s next step is to provide that point-to-point driving capability in Level 3 mode, then add full Level 4 capabilities, according to Scaringe and his team. And when that happens, the CEO said, “the vehicle (will be able) to operate entirely on its own. That means the vehicle can drop the kids off at school and pick you up at the airport” without having you or anyone else in the driver’s seat. Today, only a handful of specialized robotaxis can achieve that, and in carefully defined “geofenced” operating areas. Rivian wants to make it possible pretty much anywhere. When it can achieve that – some would caution “if” – remains to be seen. Perhaps as early as 2027, Rivian suggests. But Tesla provides a cautionary note. CEO Elon Musk has been promising to make Full Self-Driving live up to its name for some years. The latest release comes closer, but it’s only in the company’s robocabs it has gotten there. (Almost. Unlike robo-ride-share competitor Waymo, Tesla robotaxis still have human back-up operators onboard.) Related: Rivian CEO Warns of ‘Existential Threat’ as Trump Moves to Let Chinese EVs Into U.S. Unified Intelligence When you’re putting all that computing power onboard you might find other uses for it. And, so, Rivian is also rolling out a new, Alexa-style voice assistant based on its Unified Intelligence software. Where General Motors is phasing out both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Rivian never offered those technologies in the first place. It now seems ready to justify that decision with technology far more deeply embedded in the vehicle’s operation. Ask it to check your messages, the weather, your calendar, then get it to find the best route to your meeting and set up a reservation for lunch once you get there. Oh, and make sure your EV is in the most efficient operating mode so you have enough charge left to get back home. “This will fundamentally reshape how we all interact with our Rivians,” said Wassym Bensaid, the carmaker’s software chief. Rivian’s new voice assistant system also will debut in 2026. As for the Level 3 system that will debut in the Rivian R2 next year, expect to pay $2,500 up front or, if you prefer, $49.99 per month. This Corvette Sat on a Lift Since 1976 — With Just 1,000 Miles on the Odometer
A Surprise Behind Closed DoorsAn old, abandoned shop doesn’t look like the kind of place where you’d expect to find anything of value. But that wasn’t the case for this garage, where YouTuber FoMoCoPower’s Garage uncovered a classic Chevrolet Corvette that, according to him, had been sitting on a lift since 1976, along with a Land Rover Range Rover. The Corvette in question is believed to be a 1975 model year, showing just 1,000 miles on the odometer, with a valid title still in hand. Finding a mid-’70s Corvette with such low mileage today is rare, although its condition tells a different story. The car appears to have been left untouched for nearly five decades, likely without any maintenance that would have preserved its original state. A Corvette Shaped by Its StylingThe 1975 Corvette is part of the model’s third-generation (C3) run, best known for its dramatic, shark-inspired styling. Much of the C3’s chassis and mechanical layout carried over from the previous generation, but this era also coincided with the oil crisis and tightening emissions regulations. As a result, horsepower figures dropped significantly, contributing to the C3’s infamous reputation compared to other Corvette iterations. While the YouTuber didn’t specify which engine sits under the hood, he did share how the car ended up abandoned. The original owner’s father reportedly bought the Corvette for his wife, but she disliked the factory orange paint. He had the car repainted white, only for her to dislike that color as well. FoMoCoPower's Garage on YouTube Left Hanging for Decades, LiterallySometime later, the Corvette was allegedly struck in a parking lot and subsequently placed on the lift for repairs. Several components – including the exhaust – were removed, but the work was never completed. With the building’s roof badly damaged, rainwater likely poured onto the car over the years, explaining the extensive rust despite its extremely low mileage. For context, 1,000 miles is barely beyond the break-in period for most cars. FoMoCoPower’s Garage says the building is being cleared out and everything inside – including the Corvette – is being sold. While no asking price was disclosed, C3 Corvettes typically sell for around $10,000, with well-kept examples reaching $20,000 or more. In this case, the car’s poor condition could be balanced by its extremely low mileage and title, making its value hard to determine. The YouTuber has encouraged interested buyers to reach out to him. Bugatti's Second-Ever Solitaire One-Off Hypercar Reportedly Arrives in January
Reports of the W16's death have been greatly exaggerated. While the W16 Mistral was the last series-productionBugatti to feature the quad-turbocharged 16-cylinder engine, the 1% of the 1% can still commission one-offs based on the Chiron, and following the debut of the Brouillard in August, a new report from The Supercar Blog claims that another such exclusive one-off is coming in January 2026. The publication's sources haven't revealed much, but it's safe to assume that Bugatti Solitaire's second-ever creation will also be a Chiron underneath since the Tourbillon is still in development and far from having its novelty worn off. Bugatti Solitaire Builds the Hypercars of Your Dreams Bugatti Bugatti describes its Programme Solitaire as being committed to reviving the legacy of singular artistry, "redefining the art of coachbuilding." The Molsheim-based automaker says that this division "offers truly bespoke, one-of-one hypercars," but one cannot simply flash a massive sum of cash and expect to be accommodated. The car that the customer wants crafted must tell a story that is intertwined with Bugatti's rich history, and that customer cannot just be some well-monied collector. Related: Rimac is Building a Solid-State Battery for a Secret New Bugatti For example, the Brouillard was inspired by founder Ettore Bugatti's favorite horse, and its commissioning buyer owns several Bugs, as well as pieces of Carlo Bugatti's furniture and Rembrandt Bugatti's bronze sculptures. Like the one-off La Voiture Noire that preceded the setup of the Solitaire program and was ordered by a mystery individual in honor of the lost Type 57 SC Atlantic of the 1930s, these one-offs are about telling a story, not just showing off. There Will Probably Be Another One-Off Bugatti Later in 2026 Bugatti When the Broiullard was unveiled, Bugatti said that it would make no more than two coachbuilt creations per year, and with the second such car coming in January, it's highly likely that we'll see the third one-off from Programme Solitaire before 2026 is out. As for pricing, it's said that La Voiture Noire cost in excess of $15 million back in 2019. More than five years later, that's practically a bargain in a world where five-unit Gordon Murray creations fetch over $20 million; we estimate the latest Bugatti one-offs exceed that by a considerable margin. Of course, spending that sort of money seems insane to the hoi polloi, but as we've seen since the COVID pandemic, such exceptional pieces of automotive art more than repay their investments once they head to auction. Oh, to be rich... View the full article

Jeep Brings Back The White-Top Wrangler Just In Time For Winter
An Anniversary With Monthly SurprisesJeep is gearing up for its 85th birthday in 2026, but rather than dropping just one anniversary edition and calling it a day, the brand is rolling out a year-long celebration called Twelve 4 Twelve. Basically, every month, a new special-edition Wrangler arrives, each one spotlighting a different piece of Jeep’s story. Things started strong in November with the Wrangler Moab 392, a V8 brute built for serious off-roaders. December goes a bit differently with the debut of the Wrangler Whitecap. The Whitecap isn’t about raw power – it’s about heritage. Jeep brings back the white-roof look last seen in 2021, but this time, it goes further. The bright white now covers the signature seven-slot grille, giving the Wrangler a sharper, more intentional two-tone vibe – much like the Ford Bronco Heritage Edition introduced in 2022. It’s a small change, but it’s a direct nod to the early CJ-era Jeeps, when white tops were part of Jeep’s DNA. Jeep What Makes the Whitecap DifferentJeep took clear inspiration from the classic CJ-Universal models – especially those 1940s versions with Arctic White hardtops – and reimagined that look for today. The Whitecap package is only available on the Sahara and Rubicon, pairing the Bright White hardtop and grille with body-color fender flares. On the Sahara, those flares come standard; on the Rubicon, they’re bundled in a package. Both trims can be optioned with Bright White 1941 side stripe decals, and the Rubicon can be optioned with a matching hood decal. If you’d rather have open-air driving than a throwback look, Jeep also offers the Sky One-Touch power top, finished with Bright White accents. Jeep Same Powertrain ChoicesUnder the hood, nothing changes. The Whitecap sticks with the familiar 2.0-liter turbo-four (270 hp, 295 lb-ft) or the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 (285 hp, 260 lb-ft). Both engines are paired with Jeep’s proven 4x4 systems, so capability stays right in line with the rest of the Wrangler lineup. You can order the 2026 Jeep Wrangler Whitecap now as an option for your off-roader. Pricing depends on trim and options: the Rubicon X package starts at $495, the Sahara version is $2,690 with the body-color hardtop, and the Rubicon package comes in at $3,185 with both the hardtop and fender flares included. Ten more Twelve 4 Twelve editions are still on the way, so expect more from the Jeep brand in the following months around this date. DIY LED Tail Light Conversion: Wally Is Converting his 1972 Ford Maverick Tail Lights to LED For Cheap! Will Work On Lots Of Classics!
There are a lot of LED tail light and marker light options around now for all the most popular hot rods and muscle cars, but some of them are not cheap. Others are cheap, and they feel like it and operate like it. Sure, you can spend big money on the fancy billet options, but if you are on a budget then some of the cheap options are more trouble than they might be worth. And the performance on the plug in replacement LED bulbs can really be hit or miss, so that doesn’t feel great either. But what about utilizing a bit of your DIY prowess AND some super simple but functional LED tail lights to make your own custom kit for your car? About 12 years ago I did a similar install to this one on our vintage RV trailer, where I purchased brand new RV LED tail, turn and stop lights and relocated their guts into the original tail light housings so that nothing looked changed but the trailer lit up much nicer when going down the road. In this video, Wally is doing the same thing and while he’s doing it to his cool little Maverick project, I think you could retrofit a lot of other tail lights the same way. Check out the video below, and let us know what you think. The post DIY LED Tail Light Conversion: Wally Is Converting his 1972 Ford Maverick Tail Lights to LED For Cheap!
