  3. Jordan Vandergriff and the Cornwell Tools Chevrolet SS Funny Car team led John Force Racing’s first-day qualifying efforts for the NHRA 4-Wide Nationals at zMax Dragway but all four teams’ solid runs Friday night positioned them for success in Saturday’s final two qualifying sessions and Sunday’s first round of eliminations. Vandergriff ran 3.899 seconds at 328.70 mph for the second-quickest Funny Car run of the day. Alexis DeJoria and the Bandero Café Chevrolet SS Funny Car team sit fifth with their run of 3.932 seconds at 331.20 mph while Jack Beckman and the HendrickCars.com Chevrolet SS Funny Car team are sixth with their run of 3.933 seconds at 314.97 mph. “This was my first night session run in a Funny Car and it’s a lot different,” said Vandergriff. “The header flames make it a lot brighter, which kind of narrows your vision but it’s really cool driving these things at night. It’s been a great weekend so far for the Cornwell Tools team here in Charlotte.” Josh Hart and the HendrickCars.com Top Fuel team established the fourth-quickest run of their class with a Friday evening run of 3.733 seconds at 324.59 mph. “We wanted a little bit more, but I can’t put into words how proud I am to be flying the HendrickCars.com flag this weekend,” Hart said. “I got to meet Rick Hendrick for the first time and Kyle Larson was hanging out with us, too, so lots of cool first-time experiences. The car looks amazing. The fans here are awesome so It’s always great to be in Charlotte.” Saturday’s qualifying sessions are scheduled for 12:30 and 3 p.m. ET. Sunday eliminations are slated for 12 p.m. ET. Television coverage includes qualifying on FS1 at 7 p.m. ET on Friday, April 24, and 11 a.m. ET on Sunday, April 26, with eliminations action at 7 p.m. ET to follow. 4. Six-time world champion Greg Anderson’s HendrickCars.com Chevrolet continues to be the class of the field, and the most recent proof emerged on Friday at zMAX Dragway. After two rounds of qualifying at the 16th annual NHRA Four-Wide Nationals, Anderson had max bonus points and the provisional pole – just as he has in each of the most recent two events. “My HendrickCars.com Chevrolet is in a happy spot, and when you get ‘em that happy, don’t touch it,” said Anderson, who clocked a 6.549-second pass at 211.46 in the early session, followed by an absolutely blistering 6.498, 211.23 in the later round. The next-quickest at the conclusion of the day was Anderson’s teammate, reigning world champion Dallas Glenn, who raced to a 6.521, 210.77, with KB Titan Racing’s Matt Latino No. 3 on a 6.527. The two-hundredths of a second difference between No. 1 and No. 2 is sizable, but the top spot isn’t yet secure; Anderson will have to keep the pace on Saturday as two more sessions are on the schedule. “That one felt pretty good going down the track,” said Anderson, who joked that when he was told there was a 6.49 on the timeslip, he questioned whether or not it was his or one of the other drivers in the quad. “That was better than I thought we could run, but the numbers matched, and obviously I have a great hot rod this weekend,” he continued. “We got all the goody out of that one, and that’s great with Mr. H [Rick Hendrick of Hendrick Motorsports] out here watching. We did good there, and we’re on the pole tonight with the HendrickCars.com Chevy. Tomorrow is looking good for another great day.” Saturday will also bring the Mission #2Fast2Tasty NHRA Challenge, the specialty race that pits the semifinalists from the previous race against one another for bragging rights and bonus points that will come into play when the Countdown to the Championship kicks begins. Anderson is set to square off with Greg Stanfield in the Challenge, and he’ll also be doing his best to keep hold of the No. 1 spot. If it holds, it will be Anderson’s third consecutive pole and the 143rd of his career. Pro Stock qualifying and the Mission Foods #2Fast2Tasty NHRA Challenge are scheduled to begin at 1:15 p.m. ET Saturday at zMAX Dragway, with final qualifying and the #2Fast2Tasty final to take place at 3:45. 5. Three-time NHRA Funny Car world champion Ron Capps kept the momentum from the strong start to his 2026 campaign rolling at the NHRA 4-Wide Nationals, taking his NAPA Auto Care Funny Car to the provisional No. 1 spot Friday night under the lights at zMAX Dragway. Capps clocked a session-best 3.883 E.T. at 333.91 mph during Q2 to land at the top of the timing sheets heading into Saturday qualifying. The Dean “Guido” Antonelli-led team opened the weekend at the season’s lone four-wide event with a stout 3.988-second run at 321.65 mph in the heat of the day to place fourth in the qualifying order. By the time the NAPA team returned to the starting line for the day’s second session, they had been bumped back to ninth. With conditions continuing to improve, Antonelli turned up the wick, tuning Capps’ machine to what was only the second 3.8-second run of the round, earning three bonus points in the process. “This is classic zMAX,” said Capps, who entered the fourth race of the 2026 NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series tied for first place in the Funny Car standings after earning a No. 1 qualifier in Gainesville, Fla., a win in Phoenix, and a runner-up finish at the most recent event in Pomona, Calif. “Opening session, there was a little humidity and the track was fresh, but you still saw great runs. This place is always good, and when the sun goes down, it’s great. So, we started seeing the good numbers ahead of us during Q2 and I could hear Guido on the radio ask “T Buck” (assistant crew chief Tom Buckingham) ‘what did they run?’ and he said 3.89. Guido came right back to the box, opened it up, and was in there for a minute and a half, and I just knew, he’s getting after it.” With two more qualifying sessions scheduled for Saturday, Capps is unsure if his run will hold strong to earn the 39th No. 1 qualifier of his career but has nothing but confidence in his NAPA team as they prepare to go to battle in the Mission #2Fast2Tasty Challenge before Sunday’s elimination rounds. “I’m so fortunate I get to race with Guido,” he added. “Obviously, everyone saw what we did in Phoenix; that’s as tough as it gets, especially after we had the explosion. You look at that, and all that we’ve accomplished so far this season, and we’re only four races in. Guido can throw down with the best of them. It’s really cool to have a crew chief who can adapt to anything. Usually, you have one who’s really good at tricky conditions, or one who’s really good in Disneyland conditions, but Guido’s good in all conditions, and that’s very rare. “It’s looking like we’ll get some cloud cover tomorrow, so I’m not sure if this No. 1 will stick; it depends on the humidity and the heat, but we’ve got lane choice in the Mission Challenge, and we’ll be ready.” Qualifying for the NHRA 4-Wide Nationals at zMAX Dragway resumes at 12:30 p.m. ET on Saturday. 8. Brett LaSala is done with the FuelTech Radial Outlaws Racing Series. Less than a week after re-setting the Limited Drag Radial class record with a 3.762 and taking the win at Bama Outlaws in Steele, Alabama, the driver of the Coyote-powered Snot Rocket Mustang announced he’s pulling his program from the series – not over the rule change itself, but over how it came down. The rule change was the opening shot. Within 24 hours of LaSala’s victory over reigning RORS LDR champion Jamie Hancock at Alabama International Dragway, the series technical committee released a sweeping three-part adjustment aimed directly at the Ford Modular combination: an additional 200 pounds of base weight, removal of the intercooler allowance, and removal of the lockup transmission. LaSala put the performance penalty of those changes at two-and-a-half to three tenths – a death sentence for any LDR program trying to run in the 3.80s. For the record, LaSala wasn’t arguing he didn’t need to be slowed down. He said he did. “After our performance at Bama Outlaws last weekend, we understood and accepted that a rule adjustment was needed to slow our combo down to the target 3.80-3.85 range where the class lives,” LaSala wrote in his statement. He also pointed out something that has since been corroborated by multiple teams in the pits: that the right-lane clocks at Steele were running at least 0.02 seconds fast, meaning the record-setting 3.762 was actually a 3.78 on a true clock. By his math, the program needed to be slowed by three to five hundredths. Not three-tenths. Where it went off the rails was in the process. LaSala reached out to the rules committee, and during that conversation, he says committee members admitted they didn’t know the size of the turbos on the car or the actual engine displacement when they handed down the penalty, meaning the rule change was issued without a full understanding of the very combination it was targeting. Things deteriorated from there. The committee organized a group call with all the series’ racers – LaSala included – to vote on the outcome. “As you can guess, this did not go well. It turned into a witch hunt,” wrote LaSala. That was the moment, LaSala says, that decided it for him. The committee has since indicated they’ll walk back the original rule package and replace it with a smaller-turbo spec and additional weight, a more targeted adjustment that LaSala acknowledged would give the Coyote cars a fighting chance. But the damage wasn’t the rule. The damage was the precedent. “After considering this whole situation, regardless of the rules set, I know that I cannot show up to another race without having to look over my shoulder,” LaSala wrote. “And if we have a good performance, it will be discredited and large adjustments will likely be made based on emotion to put us out of competition.” The Snot Rocket program, built around a 302-cubic-inch Fast Forward Race Engines Coyote, twin Precision turbos, an M&M transmission, and tuning by Job Spetter at Real Street Performance, has been one of the best stories in small-tire racing over the last two years. LaSala won TX2K four years running in the quarter-mile, ripped off a 5.87 at 242 mph on 275 radials this spring, and won Lights Out 17 in his first real LDR swing earlier this year. He was chasing the 2026 RORS LDR championship. Now he’s chasing something else. What stings about this one, and what LaSala said clearly in his statement, is that it didn’t have to end this way. He acknowledged there are still racers and people he genuinely respects in the Radial Outlaws Series pits. He called the series something he’d looked up to for years. That’s not a guy who wanted to leave. Class racing is a trust exercise between a sanctioning body and the racers who show up. The original Coyote rules package – intercooler with methanol, lockup converter, no other boosted combo in the class allowed to run that setup – was always going to draw scrutiny once it started winning. A correction was coming, and it probably needed to come. The question is how it gets done. A rule change inside 24 hours of a win, handed down by a committee that acknowledged it didn’t have the full spec of the car, decided on a group call with the racer’s direct competition in the room; that’s where this one got away from everybody. LaSala says he’s got a few ideas for what’s next. Whatever it is, it won’t be LDR. This story was originally published on April 24, 2026. 9. Top Fuel’s Shawn Langdon was the only driver to reach the 3.60s on Friday at zMAX Dragway, powering to the provisional No. 1 position to kick off the 16th annual NHRA 4-Wide Nationals. Ron Capps (Funny Car), Greg Anderson (Pro Stock) and Matt Smith (Pro Stock Motorcycle) are also the provisional No. 1 qualifiers at the fourth of 20 races during the 2026 NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series season. In the final quad of the night, Langdon went 3.674-seconds at 339.19 mph in his 12,000-horsepower Kalitta Air dragster under the lights, giving the past world champion the quickest run in both of Friday’s qualifying sessions as he looks for his second No. 1 qualifier of the season. Currently second in points, Langdon is also after his second win of the season as he is focused on keeping the team’s strong start going in Charlotte. “It’s just a testament to the team,” Langdon said. “The guys have done a great job giving me a great race car. It’s all the hard work that they did in the off-season, a lot of things that they looked at to try to improve on from last year in the last two years, and just little by little, it’s been shown. So it’s a good feeling. “We feel pretty confident right now that if the track conditions are hot, we feel like we can make the necessary changes. Then, when we get situations like this, where you try to throw down a little bit, we have a good handle on that as well.” Leah Pruett is currently second with her run of 3.700 at 333.82, and reigning world champion and points leader Doug Kalitta is third after going 3.711 at 334.73. Funny Car’s Ron Capps made the most of ideal conditions under the lights to close out qualifying in the category, ripping off a strong 3.883 at 333.91 in his 12,000-horsepower NAPA Auto Parts Toyota GR Supra. It continues a great streak for Capps, who shares the points lead with Matt Hagan, won in Phoenix and advanced to the final round in Pomona. It’s an ideal sign at this point of the season and it also puts Capps in a great position to qualify first for the second time this year and the 39th time in his career. Though it’s still early, Capps loves the direction of the team and hopes for another big showing this weekend at zMAX Dragway, where he’s won four times in his career. That’s tied with Hagan for the most among active Funny Car drivers. “This is classic zMAX. The first run there was a little humidity, and the track hadn’t been run on and everybody was tiptoeing,” Capps said. “But this place is always good and when the sun goes down, it’s great. “We started hearing the good numbers being run ahead of us, and I could hear ‘Guido’ [crew chief Dean Antonelli] on the radio. I knew he was getting after it. If we get some cloud cover tomorrow that won’t hold, but it also depends on the humidity and the heat. We’ll see what tomorrow brings.” Jordan Vandergriff went to second with a run of 3.899 at 328.70 and Hagan, who won the 1,000th Funny Car race in Pomona, is third after going 3.901 at 326.16. In Pro Stock, six-time world champion Greg Anderson showed no let-up after winning in Pomona, putting together a spectacular Friday, including a run of 6.498 at 211.23 in his HendrickCars.com Chevrolet Camaro that puts him in the top spot. Anderson was the only driver to dip into the 6.40s, putting him in position for third straight No. 1 qualifier of the season and the 143rd in his career. Anderson, who is second in points to only KB Titan Racing teammate Dallas Glenn, continues to dominate in qualifying this year and performing well in Charlotte in front of his sponsor is always a good feeling for the veteran. “It did feel very good. I can’t lie. Sometimes when you make a run, you say to yourself that we felt pretty damn good, and that’s what I said going down the race track. The scoreboard matched what I thought. I had fun today,” Anderson said. Mr. H [Hendrick] was out here today, and he had a good time. He left before the second run and he called a little bit before it went up, and he’s like, make sure you don’t lose that pole. So I guess I got a little extra pressure there and got orders from the boss, and we got the job done. So you don’t want to lay an egg in front of the boss.” Reigning world champion Glenn is currently second with a run of 6.521 at 210.77 and Matt Latino continues his solid season, with his 6.527 at 210.64 putting him third. Racing close to home has always been a good thing for Pro Stock Motorcycle’s Matt Smith and that continued on Friday at his home track, as the defending event winner went 6.739 at 203.09 on his Denso Auto Parts Buell. Should that hold, it would give Smith 60 career No. 1 qualifiers, eclipsing Angelle Sampey for the most in Pro Stock Motorcycle history. Smith has always performed well at zMAX Dragway, winning four times, and he nearly set the speed record on Friday with his booming run. With the class racing for the first time since the season-opener in Gainesville, Smith was thrilled to start the weekend in such impressive fashion. “I didn’t think it would stick. I drove to the center line, but all in all, it did stick, and we’re number one,” Smith said. “This is a great place to race and I love the four-wide. It’s a challenge and I’m getting old, and I like more challenges as I’m getting old. “Tomorrow, we have the (Mission) #2Fast2Tasty Challenge, so we’re going to be competing for some extra points and I have a good quad. My goal is to go out there and win that quad and really set a time. I think if the bike had gone straight there, I would have gotten a little bit more 60-foot, and I think I could have gone .71 there. If people can go faster than that, they deserve to be number one.” Ryan Oehler showed strong improvement on Friday, going all the way to second, while Gaige Herrera is third with a run of 6.756 at 200.50. Qualifying continues at 12:30 p.m. ET on Saturday at the NHRA 4-Wide Nationals at zMAX Dragway in Charlotte. This story was originally published on April 24, 2026. 14. Tony Stewart Racing heads to North Carolina’s zMAX Dragway for this weekend’s NHRA 4-Wide Nationals with sights set on the history books. Matt Hagan and the Dodge//SRT Hellcat Funny Car team come in fresh off a win that moved them into a tie for first in the points standings, while Leah Pruett and her Dodge Top Fuel dragster sit fifth in points after a commanding start to her 2026 return. With his win at the NHRA Winternationals in Pomona, California, the 1,000th NHRA Funny Car race winner, Matt Hagan and the Dodge//SRT Hellcat team extended the sport’s longest active winning streak to 14 seasons. This weekend they head to a track where Hagan’s already cemented his name in history. The four-time world champion will forever be known as the first driver to make a sub-four-second run in a Funny Car, and he did it at his home race track. “I remember making that 3.99-pass. We had been saving some parts and pieces towards the end of the season and so I knew that we had some good stuff on the car,” said Hagan of his 2011 3.995-second pass. “It was one of those things where it was night and it was cool, where you could see your breath. You always get those feelings when your crew chief kind of looks at you in there at you and before he turns the knob and walks away, like, ‘hold on, bud.’ That has stuck with me, such a special moment. To break into the 3.99-range in 1,000-feet, that was really cool, especially to do it at Charlotte.” Hagan, who calls Christiansburg, Virginia, less than three hours away, home, is looking for his fifth victory at the facility just outside of Charlotte. Overall, in 22 four-wide appearances, which includes events at zMAX Dragway and the no longer competed Las Vegas Four-Wide Nationals, Hagan has raced in the final quad 13 times with three wins and three runner-up finishes. Hagan’s fourth win at zMAX came the same weekend of his historic three-second pass. “Winning in Pomona was great. Then you come into Charlotte, it’s my home track. It’s just such a great place,” Hagan said. “The Bruton Smith tracks, they’re always just top-notch. The facilities are great. The fans are great. I’ve got a lot of family and friends coming out so we’re going to have a lot of support with us. I’m looking forward to it.” In Top Fuel, Leah Pruett is trying to become just the third woman to win in the four-wide discipline after six-time Pro Stock champion Erica Enders and two-time Top Fuel champion Brittany Force. When Pruett, who is returning to competition after taking two years off to start a family, last competed in the Charlotte 4-Wide National event in April 2023, she qualified third and was runner-up to now two-time Funny Car champion Austin Prock. It was her first final quad appearance. “I feel pretty well prepared. Just because I’ve been to all the 4-wides watching, and I actually saw way more racing when I wasn’t in the car than I ever had before; up there waiting for Matt or Tony to run, and really watching what some of my competitors do: who likes to be in early, or who is the most versatile? I took the opportunity to educate myself more, but I also used to wear recording glasses a couple years ago and I have an album in my phone titled ‘race car glasses’ that I can look back on. So, I feel prepared, and the quicker you can feel prepared, the more confidence that can come,” Pruett said. “That’s the spot that I’m racing in right now. I’m looking forward to it. I know some racers hate it and there are racers like (husband) Tony [Stewart] who absolutely love it, but I fall in the category of, you have a situation, you can’t change the situation, what you can change is your attitude about it. We have a premier track ahead of us, premier racing ahead of us, we are able to adapt to any situation, and we have the ability to go very far at this race. To be honest, it’s only three rounds you have to win on Sunday. We can do that.” Through the first three races, Pruett has been a top three qualifier and picked up the No. 1 spot at the Pomona Winternationals. Her performance has carried over to race day with tow quarterfinal exits and a runner-up finish at her home race in Phoenix. Pruett might be fifth in points but she’s only 36 out of the top spot, 15 from third. Both Hagan and Pruett will have an opportunity to get race day ready with the #2Fast2Tasty Challenge Saturday during qualifying. With the four-wide format, not only do semifinalist from the previous race get a rematch, but quarterfinalists as well. Competition at this weekend’s NHRA 4-Wide Nationals at zMAX Dragway begins with four rounds of qualifying Friday at 4:15 and 7 p.m. and Saturday at 12:30 and 3 p.m. Eliminations are slated for Sunday at noon. Television coverage of the event will be on FOX Sports 1 (FS1) beginning with qualifying shows Friday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at noon ET. Eliminations will air Sunday at 7 p.m. ET. 16. The wildest spectacle in motorsports arrives this weekend at zMAX Dragway and the JBS Equipment NHRA Pro Mod Drag Racing Series presented by Elite Motorsports is ready to take part during this weekend’s NHRA 4-Wide Nationals. It’s the only four-wide race of the season in the NHRA Pro Mod category, as the unique format adds another level of excitement, as well as additional challenges for the loaded category. This weekend’s event is the third of 11 races in the category during the 2026 campaign and it is powered by Culp Lumber. “We’re proud to continue our support of NHRA Pro Mod at zMAX Dragway, a race we’ve been honored to sponsor since 2022,” said Amy Shelton of Culp Lumber. “As a third-generation company based in New London, motorsports has always been part of who we are. This event gives us a great opportunity to connect with our partners, showcase our business, and keep building lasting memories around Pro Mod racing.” Culp Lumber works closely with Stan Shelton and Kevin Rivenbark, and each is after the win in Charlotte this weekend. But it’s a loaded 23-car field in the class and throw in the four-wide element, it could be a wild three days at zMAX Dragway. Reigning world champion J.R. Gray won the NHRA 4-Wide Nationals a year ago, defeating a final quad that included Alex Laughlin, Billy Banaka and Mike Janis. Justin Bond is the most recent winner in the category, rolling to the victory in Phoenix and jumping to second in points behind only Derek Menholt, who picked up the Gainesville victory. The rest of the loaded field includes multi-time champ Rickie Smith, past champs Stevie “Fast” Jackson and Mike Castellana, and other standouts like Michael Stavrinos, Ken Quartuccio, Lyle Barnett, Sidnei Frigo and Mason Wright. It’s also a critical stretch in the class, as the race in Charlotte kicks off a stretch of three races over the next four weeks, taking the category nearly to the end of the regular season.
