Bike of the Day: 1999 Ducati Monster 900 Cafe Racer
There’s something undeniably compelling about a Monster stripped back and sharpened with purpose—and this 1999 example takes that philosophy to heart. Reimagined as a café racer around 2013, this bespoke build is said to have once belonged to Albert Hammond Jr. of The Strokes fame, adding a layer of rock ’n’ roll pedigree to an already characterful machine. Finished in black with white-outlined polished accents, the bike features a trimmed frame and a black leather bump seat for a classic […] The post Bike of the Day: 1999 Ducati Monster 900 Cafe Racer appeared first on Return of the Cafe Racers. Know Your Why
I’ve been in your shoes. I get it. Prior to joining Overland Expo as their National Sales Director, I held the same position with American Expedition Vehicles. In fact, most of my career has been with a manufacturer in either racing and performance or offroad and overlanding. I’ve worked countless shows and events, always asking the same question: Are we getting the results we’d hoped for? Are we seeing any tangible ROI? What I came to learn was that the first question we need to ask ourselves and get crystal clear on the answer was, why are we exhibiting at this show? Exhibiting at the Overland Expo shows is more than signing a booth contract and turning up with a trailer full of product. It’s a concentrated opportunity to connect with a highly engaged audience of outdoor enthusiasts, overlanders, and decision-makers who are actively researching, buying, and evangelizing gear and experiences. Before you design your booth, train your staff, or plan your promo giveaways, make sure you “Know Your Why.” Borrowing from Simon Sinek’s book, “Start With Why,” the most effective exhibitors lead with purpose. When your team understands and communicates the core reason, you’re at Overland Expo—whether to sell products, build your brand, launch new products, or acquire new customers—every tactical choice becomes clearer and more effective. For companies whose primary reason for attending is to sell products, the show represents low-hanging fruit. Overland Expo attracts attendees who are frequently in buying mode; their rigs and projects prompt immediate purchasing decisions. These attendees want instant gratification, and they expect to leave with products in hand. To convert that intent into transactions, exhibitors must design an experience that makes buying easy, attractive, and urgent. A reliable point-of-sale (POS) system that accepts cards, mobile wallets, and contactless payments is non-negotiable; slow checkouts or unreliable connectivity will kill impulse buys. Practical preparation—preloading common SKUs into your POS, creating bundled offerings, and preparing price tiers—speeds the checkout process and reduces friction. Equally important is curating the onsite assortment. Rather than trying to display your entire catalog, bring a selection optimized for Overland Expo sales: bestsellers, light and easy-to-ship items, and a handful of high-margin add-ons that elevate average order value. Show-exclusive bundles, limited-run colors, and “day-of” discounts create the urgency buyers need to act now rather than delaying a purchase. Demonstration and education are central to selling in a hands-on environment. Live demos, scheduled walkthroughs, and short how-to talks help attendees grasp product benefits and overcome objections. Demonstrators should be trained to articulate value quickly and succinctly; their role is to translate curiosity into confidence. Consider collaborative sponsorship opportunities such as the Overland Essentials, Hands-On Pavillion, and the Learning Lab. Finally, capture intent for follow-up: not every interested attendee will buy on the spot. A simple lead-capture form that records the individual’s interest, rig type, and purchase timeline allows for timely, relevant follow-up communications that can close deals after the show. When the primary aim is to build your brand, Overland Expo is a remarkable stage. Attendees are not only consumers but also community leaders, content creators, and peer influencers. They notice authenticity and reward brands that speak plainly and credibly to the lifestyle of overlanding. Building a memorable brand presence begins with a concise narrative: a clear “why” statement that explains who you are, what you stand for, and why your company exists beyond the products you make. Every booth element should support that narrative. Visual storytelling—lifestyle imagery, outfitted rigs, and intentional booth flow—helps attendees quickly grasp your brand’s identity and imagine your gear in their lives. Memorable, shareable moments amplify brand reach beyond the footprint of your booth. Photo walls, interactive displays, and staged vehicle setups invite social sharing; when attendees post with your branded hashtag, your message travels to networks of motivated enthusiasts. Educational programming further cements brand standing, positioning your company as an authority rather than just a vendor. Short workshops, maintenance clinics, and trip-planning sessions attract targeted audiences and create a sense of value that extends past a transactional interaction. Authenticity is paramount in the overlanding community; brands that use real customer stories, honest specifications, and behind-the-scenes content build trust. Invite respected community members and content creators to participate in demos or Q&A sessions to lend credibility and broaden your reach. Showcasing customer rigs and testimonials reinforces social proof and situates your brand within the lived experiences of overlanders who already trust and use your gear. READ MORE: First Time Exhibitors: 5 Tips for a Successful First Show For companies intent on launching new products, Overland Expo offers a uniquely hands-on market for early adopters and technical evaluators. Attendees tend to be curious, knowledgeable, and eager to dissect new solutions. A successful product launch at the show begins long before setup day with strategic pre-launch communication. The attendee welcome email, social media posts and reels, and the show newspaper sponsorship help to build anticipation and ensure a strong turnout at your booth. The launch itself should be staged to maximize impact. A formal reveal—short presentation, demonstration, and Q&A—provides a narrative arc that draws attention and helps the audience understand the product’s why, not just its features. Real-world proof points, from field-test data to comparative specs, are persuasive in this community; if possible, show the product installed on a vehicle to demonstrate fit, function, and practical benefits. The show environment also provides an invaluable opportunity to collect structured feedback. A succinct feedback station that asks a few targeted questions lets engineers and product managers capture qualitative impressions from informed users. Incentivizing feedback with a small perk improves participation and yields the candid insights necessary for final refinements. Acquiring new customers is often the most strategic, long-term reason companies exhibit. Overland Expo presents a fertile environment for lead generation, but converting leads into customers requires a thoughtful pipeline and disciplined follow-up. First, prioritize quality when capturing leads. Rather than simply collecting as many attendee names as possible, gather contextual information to enable personalized follow-ups: vehicle type, intended use, timeline for purchase, and specific product interests. Segmenting leads by these attributes allows marketing and sales teams to tailor outreach, increasing the chances of conversion. Nearly 50% of the Overland Expo show attendees are new to the show each year. Make sure you’re capturing these new leads and converting them to maximize your ROI. Lead magnets that deliver real value will raise the conversion rate of casual interest into captured leads. Detailed spec guides, downloadable gear checklists, access to exclusive training offers make the exchange of contact information worthwhile. Follow-up cadence matters; the most effective outreach happens within 24 to 48 hours of the event when the interaction is still fresh. Initial communications should be personalized, referencing the booth conversation and offering a clear next step, such as scheduling a demo, claiming a show discount, or visiting a regionally convenient dealer for a hands-on look. Multi-channel nurturing multiplies conversion opportunities. Email sequences that begin with helpful, non-salesy content—how-to videos, maintenance tips, trip inspiration—build trust and open the door for later purchase-oriented messages. Targeted social ads and SMS messaging can reinforce the message. Measuring lead quality and close rates is essential; use UTM codes, unique landing pages, or show-specific coupons to track which tactics and sources yield the best returns. For geographically relevant leads, connect prospects with local dealers or schedule regional demo events to shorten the sales cycle. Incentivizing referrals also leverages the social fabric of the overlanding community; programs that reward both referrers and new customers often outperform basic acquisition tactics. Across all reasons for exhibiting—selling products, building brand, launching new items, or acquiring customers—there are practical actions that support success. Staff should be trained to articulate the company’s why and deliver a consistent 30-second pitch. Booth signage must communicate priority messages and clear calls to action. Having a dedicated, quiet area for longer conversations, dealer meetings, or press interviews improves professionalism and conversion rates. Finally, track meaningful metrics such as onsite sales, number of qualified leads, demo attendance, social mentions, and post-show conversions; a focused show staff debrief within 72 hours will turn immediate impressions into prioritized follow-up actions. Simon Sinek’s core lesson in “Start With Why” is that people don’t buy what you do; they buy why you do it. At Overland Expo, your why should be the first thing attendees understand when they encounter your brand. Whether that why is to move inventory, build long-term loyalty, introduce an innovation, or expand your customer base, it should shape every decision you make—from booth design and staffing to the offers you promote and the follow-up you execute. When your actions align with a clear purpose, the result is an exhibit experience that does more than show: it converts, inspires, and grows your business long after the tents come down. Know your why, communicate it with clarity and authenticity, and design your execution to serve that purpose; the rest of the success will follow. Let’s keep the conversation going. Hit me up on the Gram and let me know what’s working for you! @loulobsinger. View the full article

Overland Expo Film Festival Sponsored by Remote Vans: Friday, May 15th at 7:00 PM at the Oasis Bar and Food Court Sponsored by Nexen Tire America EXPEDITION PORTAL PRESENTS DESK TO GLORY SEASON 2, EPISODE 1 – WHY WE OVERLAND: FOR A HISTORY LESSON | BOSNIA-HERZEGOVINA History runs deep in the Balkans–specifically Bosnia-Herzegovina. Richard and Ashley Giordano explore Josip Tito’s nuclear shelters in Željava and Konjic (ARK D-0), the Sniper Tower in Mostar, and the abandoned Olympic venues in Sarajevo. What better way to learn about history than to step right into it? This film is one of seven episodes from Season 2 of “Why We Overland” rolling out on Expedition Portal’s YouTube channel. In this series Richard and Ashley travel in their 2008 Toyota Tundra from Morocco, through the Alps and the Balkans, to Eastern Turkey. As always, driven by curiosity. Film Maker Bios In 2016 Richard Giordano completed a 48,800-kilometer overland journey from Vancouver, Canada, to Ushuaia, Argentina, with his wife, Ashley, in their well-loved but antiquated 1990 Toyota Pickup. That trip launched Richard into a career as a photographer and freelance video producer. He has crafted commercials for Toyota Canada, is lead photographer and camera operator on Expedition Overland Apex series, and currently on the road in Central Asia. If you see Richard out in the wild, he’ll most likely have a smile on his face, a strong coffee in one hand, a camera in the other, and Ashley by his side producing the project or planning their adventure. READ MORE: XOVERLAND launches Season 7, Milestones: Global Expedition XOVERLAND’S MILESTONES: GLOBAL EXPEDITION SEASON FINALE EPISODE 10: TO THE FINAL MILE With just Namibia and South Africa remaining, the XOVERLAND team pushes through Angola on the final stretch of their 25,000-mile overland expedition. The finish line is finally within reach, but the road has other plans. Southern Africa delivers some of the most unforgettable overlanding terrain of the entire journey. Remote landscapes, challenging roads, and powerful moments with the people they meet along the way remind the team why they set out in the first place. After months on the road, the reality of what they’ve accomplished has fully set in. Every mile behind them tells a story. Every mile ahead brings them closer to a milestone most people only dream of reaching. Follow along as the XOVERLAND team closes in on their longest, most ambitious expedition to date. Film Maker Bio Clay Croft is a filmmaker, expedition leader, and co-founder of the award-winning series Expedition Overland (XOVERLAND). Racing Legend Tony Stewart Looks to Continue Four-Wide Success at zMAX Dragway
Coming off a monumental win in the Top Fuel ranks, Tony Stewart is headed to zMAX Dragway for a race he’s enjoyed immensely in his brief NHRA career, as the racing legend looks to pick up another four-wide win at this weekend’s NHRA 4-Wide Nationals. Stewart is a self-declared fan of the unique four-wide setup, which provides the ultimate sensory overload with four nitro-burning machines racing at once and nearly 50,000-horsepower at once, delivering the ultimate spectacle in motorsports. This weekend marks the only four-wide race of the year during NHRA’s 75th anniversary season and Stewart has enjoyed plenty of success in the format, previously advancing to the final quad in Charlotte and winning a four-wide race last year in Las Vegas. That was his first career Top Fuel win and his third came at the most recent race in Pomona this season, where Stewart handed Pro Stock powerhouse Elite Motorsports its first-ever Top Fuel victory. That was another major moment for Stewart in his NHRA career, but he sees plenty of potential and a bright future with his 12,000-horsepower R&L Carriers dragster, with a chance for back-to-back wins on the season this weekend in Charlotte. “All the ingredients are here,” Stewart said. “We’ve still got a lot of work to do, but to see these guys and see their progression, it’s awesome. It’s been great to race with them. This is not easy, we definitely know that, but it’s such a unique and great group of people at Elite Motorsports. To get Richard (Freeman, Elite Motorsports team owner) his first win in the nitro class, there’s no words to express how much that means. It’s such a special deal and a cool feeling.” This year’s visit to Charlotte, which is the fourth of 20 races in 2026, will also continue the season-long celebration of NHRA’s 75th anniversary, where fans can expect multiple highlights at zMAX Dragway, including: An appearance from NHRA’s four-time Funny Car world champion Hagan, as well as NHRA legends Darryl Gwynn and Frank Manzo. On Sunday, a free, limited-edition NHRA schedule magnet will be given to the first 5,000 fans in attendance to take in eliminations. A new-look Nitro Mall, special displays and much more. For Stewart, competing during this milestone year means a great deal to him. His Tony Stewart Racing team remains as strong as ever, with his wife, Top Fuel standout Leah Pruett, back in the sport and Matt Hagan tied for first in points in the Funny Car ranks. He’s now helping Elite Motorsports move into the nitro ranks, adding another standout car in the loaded field that also includes points leader and reigning world champ Doug Kalitta, Langdon, Pomona runner-up Justin Ashley, Antron Brown, Josh Hart, who won in Gainesville, Clay Millican and rookie sensation Maddi Gordon. A year ago, Stewart won twice and earned NHRA’s regular-season championship and now he’s hoping for more big moments during a huge season in NHRA history. “We’re honored to be part of NHRA’s 75th anniversary. It truly is an honor. The camaraderie here in the pit area, it’s truly a large, large family and we’re grateful to be here,” Stewart said. Funny Car’s Prock swept the four-wide races last year and the back-to-back world champ will look to get on track against the likes of Hagan, Ron Capps, J.R. Todd, class newcomer Jordan Vandergriff, Alexis DeJoria and Gainesville winner Chad Green. Dallas Glenn powered his way to his first Pro Stock world title in 2025 and won last season’s NHRA 4-Wide Nationals when he defeated KB Titan Racing teammate and six-time champ Greg Anderson, 2026 Gainesville winner Matt Hartford and Eric Latino. Pro Stock Motorcycle returns in Charlotte after last racing at the season opener in Gainesville. Six-time world champ Matt Smith won at his home track last season when he defeated reigning world champ Richard Gadson, two-time champ Gaige Herrera and veteran Steve Johnson. Gadson opened 2026 with a win and will face off against the likes of Angie Smith, Jianna Evaristo, John Hall and Chase Van Sant. The NHRA 4-Wide Nationals will also feature the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, as well as JBS Equipment NHRA Pro Mod Drag Racing Series presented by Elite Motorsports and Flexjet Factory Stock Showdown. The NHRA 4-Wide Nationals will see the debut of the new Right Trailers Outlaw Street Series is an exciting new showcase for 2026 and will feature 10 drivers, with three rounds of qualifying over the course of Friday and Saturday in Charlotte, followed by semifinals and finals on Sunday at zMAX Dragway. Fans will be invited to the Nitro Alley Stage, which hosts Nitro School, meet and greets, autograph sessions and much more. Race fans in Charlotte can enjoy the special pre-race ceremonies that introduce each driver and includes the fan favorite SealMaster Track Walk. Fans are also invited to congratulate the event winners at the winner’s circle celebration on Sunday. As always, fans get a pit pass to the most powerful and sensory-filled motorsports attraction on the planet. Fans can see their favorite teams in action and servicing their cars, get autographs and more. They can also visit NHRA’s Manufacturers Midway, where sponsors and vendors create an exciting atmosphere. Buddy Hull Takes on New Challenge with World Record Mustang
NHRA Funny Car driver and team owner Buddy Hull is finding a quick fix for his need for speed as he rebuilds his NHRA Funny Car to get back into action on the NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series. This Saturday, April 25, the fan-favorite driver will get behind the wheel of a nitrous-fed ’06 Ford Mustang at the Clash of the Titans race at Xtreme Raceway Park in Ferris, Texas. This will be the second radial event for Hull, who competed in a radial race that was held in conjunction with the 2025 Stampede of Speed at the Texas Motorplex. Dave Vasser, owner of Nitrous Outlet, is promoting this event and is a fellow Texan which also appealed to Hull. “I am going a little crazy not being in a race car as we regroup and rebuild our Nitro Funny Car following our Gatornationals incident,” said Hull. “I was talking about wanting to get back to racing as soon as possible and the opportunity to drive a kickass nitrous-fed Mustang kind of fell into my lap thanks to my relationship with Sam Pack Ford and FS Performance. Dave puts on great events, and you definitely want to support Texas promoters. This is going to be a really cool experience.” Hull will be racing the nitrous fed ’06 Ford Mustang that set the Ultra Street world record at the Battle of the Thrones event at Rockingham Dragway in April of 2024. The Mustang tripped the timers with a 4.419 second, 159.86 mph run at that event. The current owner of the car is WS Energy Services and it is being flawlessly maintained by JD Campbell and the Dynamic Racing Solutions team. Hull most likely won’t be looking to lower that record but the chance to get into an ultra-high-performance radial race car was too cool to pass up. This will be the first time Hull is racing at Xtreme Raceway Park which just recently became an NHRA sanctioned facility. “It’s great that Xtreme Raceway Park is part of the NHRA family now so this can all come together,” said Hull. “NHRA facilities have to meet a high standard for racing operations. I am looking forward to mixing it up on Saturday and getting back on a racetrack.” Hull who has been racing professionally in Top Fuel and Funny Car since 2021 will be representing a host of sponsors that back him at the national level. The car will sport the logos from Sam Pack, FS Performance, Gates Belts, Technocraft, Impact, Dynamic Racing Solutions, 360 Wraps, WS and Herricks & Campbell Racing, as well as Talkin’ Funny Cars with Buddy Hull and Drag Race Bracket Bonanza. What Makes the East Coast Gear Supply KP 540 Axle Housing So Good? Ian Johnson Walks Us Through Them.
Heavy duty axles for off-road rigs have come a long way over the years and putting “tons” under a Jeep, or anything else for that matter, is the norm anymore. And you can buy all kinds of kits for swapping Dana axles of all kinds, plus GM’s 14bolt, and of course all the other late model heavy duty axles. But as rigs get more power, bigger tires, bigger axles, and more weight, the other components take more of a beating. This is especially true of spindles and hubs on the front of these rigs. So how does one get something more heavy duty than the hogged out Dana 60 front hubs for their ride? What other options are there? The answer is the East Coast Gear Supply KP 540 and Ian is here to tell us all about it. If you are looking for the biggest and baddest, this just might be it. CLICK HERE FOR MORE INFO ON THE ECGS KP 540 Video Description: Gonna do a few more of these “Quick Tech” segments for you guys so you don’t have to wait so long between full length videos. Factory Hemi Superbird Feature Video: This 1,500-Mile HEMI Superbird Has SERIOUS Drag Racing History!
Tommy Lee Byrd, the Hot Rod Hoarder, is back at it and in this video below you are going to get a look at an awesome 1970 Plymouth Superbird that came from the factory with the famed 426 Hemi under the hood. This car was painted by Circus Custom Paint in 1970 when it was brand new, and would also get some Sox and Martin horsepower before going racing that same year. This car had just 10 miles on it when the original Hemi was pulled for the Sox and Martin special. Tommy has all the history in the video below, so check it out and let us know what you think of this piece of drag racing history. We dig it. Video Description: This extremely rare Hemi Superbird is a 1970’s time capsule with an outstanding psychedelic paint job that’s been in place since 1974. The car was a drag car from day one, running in the Super Stock E Automatic class, against the Ray Allen big block Chevelle convertible. Tim Richards drove the car, and it represented Karl Gould Chrysler Plymouth out of Vestel, New York. The car had a great 1970 season, winning its class at the 1970 NHRA Summernationals at US30 Dragway in York, Pennsylvania. It also raced on the big stage at the NHRA U.S. Nationals in Indy. The car didn’t last long, as the Super Stock world was changing quickly. But it landed with another serious racer or in this case two racers…the Carpinet brothers took over the car and renamed it Infamy, erasing the Karl Gould lettering. From there, the car was painted white with custom striping, and then repainted again by Hank Z in 1974 under the ownership of Frank Obitz. The car then changed hands a few times and ultimately came out of hiding in 2014. The car was pieced back together with a period correct Hemi, and put on display at MCACN in Chicago. Since then, the car has once again changed hands and now belongs to Bob Jennings of Jennings Wing Cars. He plans to keep the ’70s paint job and cool stance.
