Over the weekend, I had the privilege of testing out the 2025 Ultimate Overland Vehicle build, a GMC Sierra HD 2500 AT4X AEV Edition, which will be auctioned off in October, with the proceeds going to the programs and organizations sponsored and supported by the Overland Expo Foundation. With the opportunity to test out a new vehicle came the temptation to test out new ground as well, but ultimately I decided that the best way to evaluate performance was to go over known terrain, as I already kn

Taking on the Ozark Overlanding Adventure Trail Into the Unknown  There’s something about heading into the unknown with your Jeep, your gear, and a crew of friends that gets your blood pumping. Our Ozark Overland Adventures had been calling my name for a while, and this past April we finally made it happen. Only problem? A massive storm system had just ripped through the area—tornadoes, flooding, the works. It left us wondering if the Ozark Overlanding Adventure Trail was even going to b

There are a small handful of events I would bend over backwards to attend. At the top of that list, tied for first place with the Virginia Rooftop Tent Rally, is Adventure X Fest. For the sixth year in a row I managed to make it down for the event and, as usual, it did […]View the full article

The camper experts at Go Fast Campers have done it again. They’re already known for making awesome lightweight, tough, and comfortable campers for a wide range of trucks, but now they’ve stretched the design to provide more space and storage. However, the GFC V2 Max isn’t just larger, it’s also packed with more features to make the camper a great space, no matter your use case and camping style. For those of us who spend time exploring beyond cell service, a small issue can quickly turn into a big problem. A simple mechanical failure or an injury miles from the nearest town can escalate to a full-blown emergency when there’s no easy way to call for help. That’s why the latest data from Overwatch x Rescue (OxR) caught my attention. In the first half of 2025, vehicle breakdowns ranked among the top five reasons for rescue activations. With overlanding on the rise, it’s clear that

(Full disclosure: this is a long-term review of the first-generation Genesis dual-battery kit for the 2007-2021 Tundra. It has been superceded by a later design, the merits of which I cannot address.) In 2021 we bought a beautiful, 80-year-old cabin in Fairbanks, Alaska, and soon realized we’d need a dedicated vehicle to leave there. A full-sized 4x4 pickup seemed the right choice, both for the conditions near the Arctic Circle and because I’d be hauling up a cargo trailer loaded with furniture,

After moving, quite literally, across the country, you’d think that we’d be tired of traveling. It was quite the contrary though and we couldn’t wait to get out and explore this foreign (to us) and spectacular landscape. Heading 30min to the west, we stopped visited a little town that some consider the sole reason for Nevada even being on the map, Virginia City. When I say this small town put Nevada on the map, I’m not kidding. When a massive silver deposit known as the Comstock Lode was discove

Ural motorcycles are timeless machines that inspire thoughts of trips along forgotten roads with nothing but your bike and who, or whatever, rides along in the sidecar. The Gear Up model has been relatively unchanged for a number of years, and while it’s an absolute classic, when fully decked out, it approaches a $27,000 price point. If you’re looking for some adventures with a sidecar entow, but you don’t want to drop that kind of cash, the newest offering from Ural should be on your radar.

Upper control arms (UCAs) — you know what they are, but do you know what they do? As a part of your front suspension, UCAs connect the front wheels to the frame of your truck. That means they play a huge role in the alignment of the wheels and how hard you can drive, especially if you’re the kind of person who likes to rip down backroads. Typically, people only change their UCAs when they’re changing the suspension on their vehicle or adding lift. But there are other cases when it’s a good ide

Toyota trucks are great—we would know. But every truck must have a weakness, right? For the Toyota Tacoma, 4Runner, and FJ Cruiser, that weakness is the cam tabs. Located in the front suspension, cam tabs make sure that your wheels stay aligned while you drive. As the cam turns, it moves the control arm back and forth between the tabs, which ultimately adjusts your alignment. The reason that this setup is weak is because as you drive down the road, your tires are putting force against the con
