Bentley Eyes Limited-Run Off-Road Bentayga as Strategy Expands
Bentley is exploring a limited-run off-road model while preparing its first electric vehicle and a next-generation Bentayga — a combination that reflects how significantly the British luxury brand's thinking has shifted in recent years. Speaking with Autoblog at the 2026 New York Auto Show, Bentley Americas CEO Mike Rocco outlined a strategy that looks quite different from the one the company was pursuing just a few years ago. "We're not on the same track that was announced four or five years ago, where we were going to be fully electrified by 2030," Rocco said. What's replaced it is something more nuanced: a lineup built around electrification, high-performance variants, and limited-production special models, with Bentley maintaining flexibility across all three rather than committing entirely to any one direction. Bentley Bentley Could Build A Limited-Run Off-Road ModelAs we reported in January, Bentley debuted the Bentayga X Concept at the FAT Ice Race in Zell am See, Austria — a heavily modified Bentayga Speed built to gauge interest in a more capable off-road variant. Based on the Bentayga Speed's twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 producing 641 horsepower, the concept rides 2.1 inches higher and sits 4.7 inches wider than the standard car, with forged 22-inch wheels, all-terrain tires, and around 12.2 inches of ground clearance. A roof rack, auxiliary lighting, and twin tow eyes completed the picture of something built to actually go places. Related: W12 is Dead, Long Live the V8: The New Bentayga Speed is Bentley's Fastest SUV Yet The response has been strong enough to keep the idea moving forward. Rocco made clear that dealer feedback had been unambiguous. "There's a lot of interest in it," he said, though he stopped short of confirming production. What's also clear is that if a production version does happen, it won't follow the same path as the Bentayga. Rather than a full model-line addition, Bentley is thinking small in volume and exclusive in character. "If we did it, it would probably be in the same vein as a Supersports with a limited run of production," Rocco explained. "It wouldn't be a full model — we would limit it." The implication is a collector-focused halo product, designed to extend the brand's image and demonstrate capability rather than contribute meaningfully to overall sales volume. Related: Bentley's Continental GT Supersports Is Rear-Drive Only, 657 HP, and the Lightest Bentley in 85 Years Bentley's First EV Arrives In 2027 — And It's Staying ElectricBentley's first electric vehicle is on a firm timeline, with a reveal planned for the second half of this year and sales beginning in 2027. The model — a smaller SUV positioned below the Bentayga and described internally as the Luxury Urban SUV — will ride on Volkswagen Group's PPE platform, the same architecture that underpins the Porsche Macan Electric and Audi Q6 e-tron. Prototypes are currently in testing. SH Proshots/Autoblog Bentley has made clear that the model will not spawn a combustion or plug-in hybrid variant — a contrast to some rivals that have pivoted back toward hybrid solutions in response to softening EV demand. For Bentley, the reasoning is partly strategic and partly technical, with the platform itself not designed to accommodate combustion power. The car is also positioned not as a replacement for existing models, but as an addition to the lineup aimed at attracting new customers. This will be a new Bentley that happens to be electric, aimed at buyers the brand doesn't currently reach. Rocco echoed that in New York: "We're not positioning it as an EV product — it's the next Bentley." The car will also introduce Bentley's next-generation design language, shaping the look of the brand going forward. On performance, the SUV is expected to deliver rapid charging capability and a balance of comfort and agility in line with Bentley's existing models. Bentley Next-Generation Bentayga Later This DecadeWhile attention is focused on the new EV, Bentley is also developing the next-generation Bentayga, though timing remains fluid. Rocco suggested it could come in around two years from now. Unlike the Luxury Urban SUV, the next Bentayga is expected to offer plug-in hybrid and internal combustion powertrains, keeping it accessible to buyers who aren't yet ready for a full switch to electric. Bentley is not expected to introduce a second EV before the end of the decade, meaning the new SUV will carry the brand's electric ambitions alone for several years. In the meantime, the company is also considering exclusive limited-run combustion-only models in response to continued demand for gas-powered cars — a signal that Bentley intends to serve that part of its audience rather than phase it out. Related: Bentley Marks 10 Years of the Bentayga With a New Special Edition Performance Remains Central To What Bentley IsRunning through all of this is a consistent emphasis on performance, which Bentley views as one of the clearest points of differentiation within the luxury segment. "We're the only luxury brand that can say we can do all of that — luxury, craftsmanship, bespoke, and performance," Rocco said. Recent models like the Supersports and Speed variants have reinforced that position, with demand proving strong. Adam Lynton/Autoblog View the 2 images of this gallery on the original article "The demand has been exceptional — the car is sold out," he noted. Performance-focused derivatives currently account for around 35 percent of Bentley's business when a full derivative strategy is in place, and the brand intends to lean further into that. "We want to shine a light on performance a bit more," Rocco said. Related: Bentley’s One-Off Travis Pastrana Supersports Looks Wild In Person Bentley View the full article

Mazda Says Buyers Care More About Features Than Luxury Badges
Mazda’s Upmarket PushMazda once occupied a similar space to brands like Toyota and Hyundai, but a number of changes gradually gave the brand a more premium feel. The introduction of Kodo design on the CX-5 in 2012 was one of them, though Mazda still isn’t on the same level as luxury brands like Lexus. Still, the Japanese marque is reinforcing its market position with a survey exploring what consumers today consider “premium” in a car. The survey, which polled 1,000 U.S. vehicle owners who purchased a car within the past five years, suggests that more buyers now associate premium with intuitive in-car technology, design, safety, generous space, and practicality rather than the status signaling of a brand badge. Mazda Rethinking PremiumThe results bolster Mazda’s case, given that its lineup delivers a near-luxury feel without the premium pricing. Looking at the numbers, 93% of respondents said they would rather own a vehicle with “more of what matters” to them than a more expensive one. That “more” was most commonly defined as space and practicality (40%), value and quality (36%), and advanced technology and connectivity, driving enjoyment, and performance capability (30% each). On the other hand, 7% of respondents said “more” refers to status or social recognition, while 19% said a brand’s badge elevates a vehicle above others. While many would love to own a Mercedes-Benz or a Porsche, the survey suggests more buyers today are making more considered choices – looking beyond the badge and evaluating a vehicle’s specs rather than relying solely on brand reputation to determine its worth. Mazda leaned into that idea with a strong statement of its own, saying that “modern luxury is practical, purposeful, and deeply personal – not performative.” Mazda Mazda Draws the LineOther notable findings include 76% of respondents saying a premium markup is not worth it, while 83% believe a mainstream vehicle with a premium feel is the smarter luxury choice. In fact, even with an extra $75,000 to spend, more respondents said they would rather save the money for financial security, although 46% still said they would put it toward a high-end car. Some recent developments that support Mazda’s broader narrative include earning more 2026 Top Safety Pick+ awards than any other brand and winning the 2026 World Car Design of the Year award with the 6e (or EZ-6 in China), an electrified sedan considered as a successor to the Mazda6 that is not currently sold in the U.S. Mazda View the 3 images of this gallery on the original article View the full article

How American Buyers Kept the Mercedes V8 Alive
Having joined the race to zero emissions, Mercedes-Benz, like other European carmakers, has committed itself to a fully electric future. As quickly as they all joined the race, though, it seems they are just as quickly easing themselves out of it. This is not because the environment is healing, but rather because even America’s best-selling EV manufacturer has dealerships full of unsold inventory. One could conclude, then, that while there is demand for EVs, the supply of EVs in the American market has already met this demand. For this reason, the new G-Class and S-Class, the latter of which will be in dealerships in 2027, have been confirmed as coming with the new V8 as well other ICE models, alongside EV variants of course due to the higher adoption rate of EVs in Europe and China, driven primarily by a policy push in the EU, and the Chinese Govt and auto industry’s investments into the EV Infrastructure respectively. Mercedes-Benz The New(ish) Mercedes-Benz V8Why has Mercedes announced a new V8 when it should be sending it off into the horizon? Simple, because its American customers are not ready to make the switch to EVs, and American sales make up over 15 percent of Mercedes sales across the globe. While China makes up for 30-35 percent of global sales, and its home market in Europe is committing to a fully electric future, Mercedes-AMG Board of Management Chairman, Michael Schiebe, says that the new flat-plane crank V8 engine continues to make sense for low-volume, high-performance vehicles. Mercedes has also announced a $7 billion investment into its Tuscaloosa, Alabama facility, aiming to produce core models such as the C-Class and E-Class here, primarily to minimize the loss in margins due to tariffs in one of their largest markets. Mercedes-Benz View the 2 images of this gallery on the original article Are Big ICE Motors Making a Comeback? Mercedes-Benz Is this a larger signal from the industry? Can we expect to see big ICE motors making a comeback? Well, yes and no. Yes, it is a signal from the industry, consumers have conveyed their sentiment clearly - announcing that while firms were ready to only sell EVs, their customers weren’t ready to buy them. One could argue, though, that this new V8 could be the last hurrah of the Mercedes V8 meant to meet the upcoming revised European emissions regulations, and nothing more. However, Mercedes representatives have repeatedly hinted at ICE models being available well past 2030, as long as there is demand for them. Mercedes-Benz View the full article

Mercedes-Benz Targets Higher Volume After Years of Sliding Sales
Stopping the BuckSince 2024, Mercedes-Benz has experienced a slow but steady decline in sales. It dipped by 4 percent that year and fell by another 9 percent in 2025. Not wanting to see those numbers reach double-digits, the company is changing its strategy yet again. The solution? Appeal to the masses by going for the 'mainstream premium' crowd. Granted, Mercedes-Benz was always mainstream, but according to Car Magazine, the company nearly abandoned the entry-level luxury market. Back in 2022, Mercedes-Benz aimed to increase profits by focusing more on the upper market and eventually discontinued its more affordable offerings. That plan had not panned out, hence, a change of direction. Mercedes-Benz Factors That Ate Up ProfitsMind you, Mercedes-Benz is still a profitable automaker, but the low-volume, high-profit strategy backfired on the brand due to various circumstances. It was hit the most last year with the announcement of the tariffs in key markets. The company ended up with a bill costing approximately €1 billion to cover that alone. Compounding the problem is China. As local automakers level up, legacy brands over there have suffered heavily. Mercedes-Benz's sales in China dropped by a worrying 19 percent as more Chinese models that offer a lot more car for a lot less money. Then there's the failed gamble of the early EQ electric models, along with the EV market's cooling in recent years. It had forced Mercedes-Benz to rethink its electrification strategy at high cost. With that in mind, Mercedes-Benz needs to sell more cars to make up for a tough 2025. Mercedes-Benz The GoalMercedes wants to return to 2019 sales levels. At that time, it sold 2.3 million vehicles worldwide, but in the last few years, figures have been below that. The company wants to, at the very least, be able to sell 2 million cars again within the next five years. It also wants margins up by 10 percent as part of its mid-term goals. The next-generation A-Class will be key to the brand's volume and profit strategy. It was supposed to be discontinued by the current generation's life cycle, but the company has committed to an all-new generation that will be revealed by 2028. The compact hatchback class is still huge in Europe, and the A-Class has (and still is) done well against the Audi A3 and BMW 1 Series. The A-Class isn't the best-selling Mercedes-Benz model in Europe, but when you add up sales, it's still a vital model. Mercedes can also count on the heavily facelifted C-Class for the 2027 model year. It's been a consistently strong sales performer for over 30 years, and the release of the new model will be just in time as its rival from Munich prepares the next-gen 3 Series. Healthy profits are also to be expected from the S-Class, while the CLA and GLB should help boost sales volumes. The 2 million sales goal won't be easy amid the competition and other external factors, but the barrage of upcoming models came in at the right time. Mercedes-Benz View the full article

Time Is Almost Up to Buy a Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing
If you're looking for a small sedan with raucous performance and a manual transmission, your choices are about to get slimmer. Orders for the Cadillac CT4 range, including the high-performance CT4-V Blackwing derivative, are set to close on April 20, according to GM Authority, leaving enthusiasts one less option and likely marking the end of an era, as no CT4 replacement has been announced. With the XT4 already gone, this means sub-$40,000 Caddies will cease to exist, but at least the CT4's bigger CT5 brother will live on, potentially bringing a new Camaro with it. CT4 Order Books Close Soon, Ending an Era Cadillac With the April 20 deadline for new CT4 orders looming (production will cease in June), all CT4 models will soon only be available as part of inventory or used, and though the Blackwing variant is doubtless the sorest loss, the entire range has been a capable alternative to German offerings. Rear-wheel drive is standard, and the base model powers the rear axle with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine delivering 237 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. Further up the range, a 2.7-liter turbocharged four-pot makes 310 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque, while the CT4-V makes 325 hp and 380 lb-ft. At the top of the ladder, the CT4-V Blackwing comes with a 3.6-liter twin-turbo V8 with 472 hp and 445 lb-ft of torque. Related: Infiniti Confirms a Manual, Turbocharged Sports Sedan Is Coming: Here’s What It Could Look Like Impressive numbers aside, the CT4 range provides communicative steering, and with a choice between a six-speed manual or a 10-speed auto, anyone can enjoy its well-balanced chassis. With the CT4 disappearing, there will no longer be any American small luxury sedans to choose from, but that may change before long. American Sedans Are Ready to Make a Comeback Cadillac View the 2 images of this gallery on the original article With sedans starting to see something of a resurgence (Ford, Buick, and Chrysler have all talked about new sedans), Cadillac may yet revive the CT4 someday, but for now, its focus is on a new CT5. GM has confirmed that, while the CT5 will end production at the end of 2026, it will return for "a future model year," though when exactly is a mystery. On the one hand, the next Camaro will be built on the current CT5's Alpha platform, so this architecture still has life left in it, but on the other, would Cadillac be comfortable launching a "new" CT5 on old underpinnings? And would an entirely new platform be worth developing? All that remains to be seen, but if Ford, Chrysler, and Buick see success with their sedans, Cadillac may well dip a toe back into the CT4's segment before decade's end. View the full article

This Vintage Military G-Wagen Costs Maybach Money—And Packs a V8 Swap
$275K Can Go a Long WayAt $275,000, the EMC 620GE enters pricing territory that rivals flagship luxury SUVs. A brand-new Range Rover SV starts at a similar level, while a well-optioned Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600 delivers far more technology, refinement, and everyday usability. On paper, this vintage military truck should not even be in the same conversation. Yet here it is, commanding the same money with none of the conventional benchmarks buyers expect at this price point. That disconnect is precisely what makes the EMC compelling. This is not a value-driven purchase. It is a statement piece rooted in heritage. Expedition Motor Company has taken a former Mercedes-Benz 250GD Wolf and rebuilt it with an obsessive focus on authenticity. The camouflage finish is not decorative. It is based on real field-applied military patterns, where no two trucks were ever identical. That attention to detail transforms the vehicle from a simple restoration into something closer to functional art. The $55K Engine Swap Pushes it Over The TopThe biggest departure from the original formula sits under the hood. The old OM602 diesel was built for durability, not speed. It produced just 84 horsepower and defined the Wolf as a slow, methodical off-roader. EMC replaces that with a 6.2-liter LS3 V8 producing 430 horsepower. The upgrade alone costs $55,000, which signals just how far this build has moved away from its utilitarian roots. Earlier EMC builds, including turbodiesel versions, leaned more toward preservation and came in at significantly lower price points. They retained more of the original character and offered a closer link to the Wolf’s military identity. This latest 620GE pushes the envelope further than anything before it. It is more powerful, more refined, and far more expensive. The philosophy has clearly shifted from restoration to full reinterpretation, with performance and exclusivity now taking priority. Expedition Motor Cars View the 5 images of this gallery on the original article Opulence Wrapped in FatiguesInside, the transformation is just as dramatic. The original Wolf was intentionally bare. It used simple materials and minimal equipment because it was designed for military use. EMC retains that straightforward layout but elevates every surface. Sweetgrass upholstery, detailed stitching, and European oak trim introduce a level of craftsmanship that belongs in a high-end luxury vehicle. This is where the 620GE becomes divisive. It no longer tries to balance heritage with usability. It leans fully into exclusivity. The result is a vehicle that feels less like a tool and more like a collectible. Some will see that as the natural evolution of the G-Wagen story. Others will argue it drifts too far from the raw simplicity that made the Wolf special. Either way, the price reflects that shift. This is no longer about capability or value. It is about owning something that exists purely because it can. How Much Power Does the Mustang Dark Horse Really Make? 4 Dynos, 4 Answers
Ford rates the Mustang Dark Horse at 500 horsepower and 418 lb-ft of torque at the crank. That's the figure on the spec sheet, but crank horsepower is measured at the engine, before drivetrain losses to friction. What actually matters to the person behind the wheel is wheel horsepower, and that's where things usually get interesting. Based on typical drivetrain loss figures, most people expected the Dark Horse to land somewhere around 440 wheel horsepower. A reasonable assumption, and one that turned out to be only sort of right. Because the figures depend entirely on who was doing the measuring. Ford The Number on the Spec Sheet Isn't the Whole StoryRoad and Track took the same Dark Horse to four different chassis dynos across Southern California, keeping everything else consistent. Same 5.0-liter V8, same 91-octane fuel, same weather conditions, same SAE correction factor applied across the board. The results should have been close. They were not. Ford A Dynapack hub dyno at Bisimoto Engineering read 430.9 hp. A Dynojet at HK MotorSports came back with 425.7 hp. At the low end, Westech Performance Group's older SuperFlow unit recorded the weakest figures of the bunch. Then there was World Motorsports, whose newer AWD Mustang dyno topped out at 465 hp, nearly 44 hp more than the lowest reading. The shop openly acknowledged that its machine tends to read on the generous side. The spread across all four runs was significant enough that someone buying or selling a modified car could look at those numbers and reach completely different conclusions about what they were looking at. Why Dyno Numbers Are Best Used as BaselinesThe gap between machines is only part of the problem. Weather correction factors introduce another layer of variability that most people never consider. One technician demonstrated to Road and Track how four different correction settings applied to the exact same pull produced a spread of nearly 100 horsepower. Essentially, you can use different math on the same run and get wildly different numbers. This is why experienced tuners are largely indifferent to headline figures. Ford What they care about is running a baseline pull on a specific machine and then measuring gains on that same machine after modifications. A car that picks up 30 hp on the same dyno under the same conditions tells you something real. A random "dyno verified" sheet from a shop across the country tells you almost nothing in isolation. The next time someone quotes their wheel horsepower with total confidence, just remember the Dark Horse walked into four shops and came out with four different identities. View the full article

Mercedes-AMG May Drop 4-Cylinder SL for Straight-Six Upgrade
The combination of an AMG badge and a small four-cylinder engine with a massive turbo and electric assistance hasn't been particularly well received by Mercedes fans, and according to a new report, the German automaker will be replacing the SL 43 with a new, straight-six-powered SL 53. Auto Motor und Sport reports that the M139 four-pot will be replaced by the M256 Evo mild-hybrid powertrain, with the entry-level AMG SL gaining a new name to signify its upgrade, but this change isn't purely because of customer feedback, rather taking place because the four-cylinder engine does not meet Euro 7 emissions regulations. Whatever the reason, expect the change to apply to the American market, too. More Power for Base SL, V8s Getting Tweaked Too Zac Palmer/Autoblog The current 2026 Mercedes-AMG SL 43 produces up to 416 horsepower from its 2.0-liter powertrain, and the report claims that the 3.0-liter setup will improve on that figure, churning out a respectable 449 hp. For the record, the current V8-powered SL 55 is not far ahead, producing 469 hp. Furthermore, while today's base AMG SL powers the rear wheels exclusively, the report says the SL 53 will send grunt to both axles, so the SL 53 will get quicker and move deeper into V8 performance territory. To keep the range balanced (and meet emissions), both the SL 55 and SL 63 will reportedly be tweaked, too. Related: Mercedes-AMG and Mercedes-Maybach SL Roadsters Spied with Fresh New Looks Both the SL 55 and SL 63 will continue to use a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8, but it'll be Mercedes' new flat-plane crank engine, and the former trim will reportedly produce 537 hp, while the latter will jump from 577 hp to 650 hp. The German publication offered no details on the range-topping SL 63 S E Performance, whose plug-in hybrid V8 currently makes a monstrous 805 hp, but we suspect this will see power gains, too. New Mercedes SL Models to Debut By Next Year Mercedes-Benz The report adds that these new SLs will arrive for the 2027 model year facelift, which means we should see them unveiled before the end of this year, and the bigger engine should please both enthusiasts and regulators. Even if the M139 four-cylinder could meet carbon emissions requirements, and even if customers approved of the setup, the engine is reportedly also too loud for Euro 7 noise limits, so sending it on its way is an easy decision. Still, this was a legendary motor, producing beyond 200 hp per liter in some applications and using a closed-deck design for greater strength, and while lovers of larger engines may be happy to see it go, Mercedes will no doubt use learnings from its time on the market to make future engines even more advanced. Toyota Reinvents Driving Sound for the Electric Era
All Senses EngagedThe roar of an internal combustion engine has been an intrinsic part of the driving experience until now. As the shift to electric mobility accelerates, engine noise is being replaced by near-silent performance, much to the dismay of enthusiasts. Toyota, however, believes that cars are to be experienced with all five senses, and is paying special attention to EV sound design in an effort to keep drivers engaged by engineering a complete sensory experience. Crafting Sound Without an EngineIn an effort to create a sound that matches each vehicle’s character while feeling authentic rather than artificial, Toyota’s engineers have taken to crafting acoustic profiles from the ground up. According to Shinichi Sano, assistant manager of Lexus’ Vehicle Performance Development Department No.1, who worked on sound design for the Toyota Mirai fuel-cell vehicle and the Lexus UX300e BEV, Toyota’s approach goes far beyond simply adding noise. Sano’s team conducted extensive sound tests in actual vehicles across various global markets to determine which frequencies would appeal to drivers, and which may be considered unpleasant or fatigue-inducing. Almost all the participants in these trials agreed that sounds at a frequency of 3kHz and higher were annoying, while sounds at 2kHz and under were deemed acceptable. As a result, only sounds below this mark were incorporated. Toyota Speed and SoundOne of the key objectives of the team behind Toyota’s EV sound engineering was to create an audio experience that allowed drivers to intuitively sense the vehicle’s speed, establishing clear communication between car and driver. To achieve this, three sound profiles were created based on the vehicle’s speed: a smooth and linear tone up to 50 mph that built up to a crescendo up to about 75 mph, above which the sound would level out, indicating that the vehicle was nearing its top speed. By layering these sound profiles together, engineers were able to simulate a natural sense of acceleration, much like that of a car with a traditional, internal combustion engine and transmission. Lexus Mythological InspirationToyota also experimented with different sounds for different vehicles, such as looking to Fujin, the wind god, for the Mirai, and engineering a whooshing sound for that car as it breathes in air and creates electricity from hydrogen and oxygen. The team also considered incorporating thunderous booms and crackles for the UX300e, inspired by the thunder god Raijin, but this did not make it past the prototype stage. Lexus The Sound of the FutureAs EVs take major strides in performance and refinement, Toyota is highlighting how sound can remain a core part of the driving experience, even without a traditional engine. By blending science, creativity, and cultural inspiration, the brand isn’t just replacing engine sounds but creating a new language for us to interact with our cars. View the full article

Hennessey Celebrates 35 Years with Ultra-Limited 850-HP Mustang, Hints at New Hypercar
Texas-based Hennessey has never been a stranger to speed, modifying and racing several cars and trucks since its inception in 1991, along with introducing an all-American hypercar. In celebration of its 35th anniversary in 2026, the company has revealed an ultra-limited take on the Ford Mustang GT with 70 percent more power, special graphics and badges, and some carbon fiber. This 35th Anniversary Super Venom will be limited to just 35 units, and further down the road, it will be joined by a new Hennessey hypercar. But more on that later. For now, let's focus on the Mustang-based monster. Hennessey Extracts 850 Horsepower from New Super Venom Hennessey View the 4 images of this gallery on the original article The 5.0-liter Coyote V8 engine that finds a home under the hood of every Mustang GT has been supercharged to deliver a total of 850 hp and 650 lb-ft of torque, the latter figure an increase of 55 percent. Along with the supercharger, this was achieved with the help of a new intake system, custom Hennessey Performance Engineering engine management recalibration, and tuning on both the dyno and the road, supported by a three-year/36,000-mile limited warranty. Hennessey hasn't neglected the cosmetics, and for this 35th Anniversary variant, the Super Venom decals on the lower doors are joined by "91" decals on the hood and trunk, referencing the year of Hennessey's inception. Badging on the fenders and trunk, and under the hood, also helps make this Super Venom more special. Hennessey View the 3 images of this gallery on the original article To ensure this isn't confused as just another Mustang, the car gets a "VenomAero" carbon fiber body kit, comprising a lip spoiler, wing mirror caps, functional hood vent, functional fender louvers, side skirts, deck lid, and top-hung wing. This is complemented by 20-inch lightweight wheels, while the interior gains a dash plaque, branded floor mats, and redone upholstery with leather and Alcantara, as well as embossed seat backs. Specific pricing hasn't been revealed, but expect to pay over $150,000. If six-figure pricing doesn't even raise an eyebrow, read on... New Hennessey Hypercar in the Works Hennessey View the 4 images of this gallery on the original article Over the last three and a half decades, Hennessey has continually pushed boundaries, and that is especially true of its Venom F5 hypercar. The company has produced several variants of this beast—F5, F5 Revolution, F5 Revolution Evolution, F5-M with a manual transmission, and the one-off F5 LF, which has both a manual and a simply breathtaking 2,031 hp—but there's still more coming, with company founder John Hennessey saying there's "a new Hennessey hypercar on the way." Frustratingly, little else was said, so this could be an all-new hypercar or yet another take on the F5 recipe first revealed in 2014. Whatever it is, it's sure to have ridiculous power and performance that can rival the best that Europe has to throw at it. We'll bring you more information as we get it. View the full article

Europe Could Ban Ford F-150, Silverado and Ram Trucks Over New Rules
America’s most popular vehicles, the full-size pickup trucks from Ford, General Motors and Stellantis, may be banned from Europe in a move that has angered US carmakers. According to Financial Times, US automakers are accusing the European Union of planning to keep trucks like the Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and Ram 1500 off European roads by enforcing new safety rules that would exempt them from the trade deal between the EU and the US. US Automakers Sold 7,000 Pickups and SUVs in Europe in 2024 Stellantis The US pickup issue threatens to throw a wrench in the trade deal, which has been finalized but hasn’t been ratified by the EU yet. The stakes may not seem high for the US, as its full-size trucks make up less than 0.1% of the European car market, but it appears to be a matter of principle. Under the trade agreement finalized last year, the US cut tariffs on European imports from 27.5% to 15% while the EU reduced its tariffs on US vehicles from 10% to zero. But the US pickup truck issue may threaten the trade deal, whose ratification has been delayed by the EU. “Right now Europe is in a better position than the US,” an unnamed executive at one Detroit carmaker told FT, referring to the fact that the EU secured lower tariffs and some US vehicles may not be included in the deal. The US ambassador to the EU, Andrew Puzder, told FT that EU plans to change safety rules could breach the spirit of the trade deal if they prevented some American vehicles from being sold in Europe. At the center of the dispute is the EU’s Individual Vehicle Approval (IVA) scheme, which allows certain bespoke or rare models to be imported under less stringent standards. The loophole also applies to vehicles produced for other markets. US carmakers have taken advantage of that, selling around 7,000 SUVs and pickup trucks in Europe in 2024, according to European environmental campaign group Transport & Environment; more than 5,000 of those were Ram 1500 trucks. America's Large Pickups Deemed Unsafe for Other Road Users in Europe Stellantis But the EU is now planning to tighten the scheme, with US carmakers fearing that their large pickup trucks would no longer be allowed in Europe. They claim that the changes would go against the trade deal, under which the EU agreed to recognize American car standards, opening the door to more US-built vehicle imports. “You can’t have low tariffs and massive non-tariff trade barriers and claim you’ve got a functioning relationship,” ambassador Puzder told FT. According to the US auto executive, the US administration is aware that Europe is "dragging its feet on the trade agreement" while also looking at "restricting US products and limiting customer choice in Europe.” The American Automotive Policy Council, a lobby group for Ford, General Motors and Stellantis, in December urged the Trump administration to block the EU’s move to tighten the IVA rules. But the European Union is expected to launch the revised scheme in 2027 to close loopholes it said could allow unsafe cars on its roads. Since the EU-US trade deal was finalized in 2025, the Transport & Environment group has warned that allowing more “monster” US pickup trucks on European roads would put pedestrians, cyclists and other drivers at greater risk. “Ram bonnets are so high that children aged up to nine years old standing directly in front cannot be seen by the average driver,” the group noted. Jeep Says Rivals Are Copying Its Look—So It’s Making Its SUVs Even Tougher
Copycats Crowding the Off-Road SpaceJeep isn’t backing off as more brands flood the market with rugged styling cues seemingly taken from their vehicles. Instead, it is leaning further into its identity. Speaking to Australian media at the Easter Jeep Safari, Jeep Vice President of Exterior Design Vince Galante told Car Expert that the rise of copycat design cues is motivating the brand internally. He noted that elements once unique to Jeep are now everywhere, but that only reinforces what Jeep stands for. “I think everybody has gone rugged, like everybody has red or orange tow hooks,” Galante said. ND Adlen Not About Retro Styling AloneGalante further explained that authenticity is not about retro styling alone. It is about function and capability. A Jeep must perform off-road and serve as a tool first. He said this is what separates Jeep from vehicles that only imitate the look. The design team is focused on making vehicles more capable and more adaptable for owners. That approach keeps the brand grounded even as competition grows. He also acknowledged pressure from rivals like the Ford Bronco. Instead of reacting with drastic changes, Jeep is refining its formula. Icons such as the Jeep Wrangler will evolve carefully. Any major shift will be tied to real improvements in performance or usability. Copycat Culture and China’s Growing InfluenceApart from other legacy brands, China has a long history of drawing direct inspiration from global automotive design, including Jeep. Vehicles resembling icons like the Land Rover Defender have appeared at lower price points. Models such as the Landwind X7 show how closely some manufacturers have followed established designs. Despite legal challenges, fighting these alleged infringement has been like a game of whack-a-mole. At the same time, China is becoming one of the largest automotive markets in the world. Its scale influences global trends. Many domestic brands are now evolving beyond imitation. They combine familiar styling with new technology and competitive pricing. For brands like Jeep, the response is not to chase every copy. It is to strengthen what makes them original. Jeep As a CultureJeep refuses to dilute its identity to stand out. It doubles down on capability and authenticity. Copycats only validate the brand's formula. Real advantages remain engineering, off-road performance, and heritage. Buyers are more informed and more critical, and they demand substance, not just style. Jeep’s focus on function keeps it credible and competitive in a crowded segment. There is also a strong community factor. Jeep owners actively modify and personalize their vehicles. That culture feeds back into product development. It keeps the brand connected to real-world use. By embracing both praise and criticism, Jeep maintains relevance while staying true to its roots. View the full article

GM Recalls 271,000 Chevy Malibu Sedans After Rearview Cameras Fail
The Chevrolet Malibu reached the end of the line last year, but the now-discontinued affordable midsize sedan isn't out of GM's hair just yet. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, General Motors is recalling the Malibu because of a common problem: its rearview camera doesn't work properly. The problem affects 2023-2025 models, impacting some 271,770 examples of the sedan that were built between May 26, 2022, and July 18, 2024. Unlike several similar rearview camera failures across the industry in recent months, this problem can't be fixed with a simple software update, so owners will need to go into a Chevy dealer to get a replacement. Bad Glue Caused Chevy Malibu Camera Glitches Chevrolet According to the NHTSA's recall report, GM supplier Sharp Electronics discovered that the bonding process used to assemble the camera housing is at fault after a six-month review of field complaints received by GM found that some rearview camera systems were displaying a blank or distorted image. Specifically, GM's investigation determined that "the mounting configuration of the Sharp camera on the Chevrolet Malibu could expose it to moisture that may breach an insufficient housing bond." Basically, water could get into the rearview camera housing, and that may lead to the display issues noted in the recall. Related: 3 Vehicle Shootout: 2026 Nissan Leaf vs Volvo EX30 vs 2027 Chevrolet Bolt - I've Driven Them All GM reviewed field complaints every six months, but the problem has been noted since at least November 2022, so it's existed since the final-generation Malibu first started arriving with customers, with very few exceptions. Essentially, every Malibu could suffer from this problem, though GM estimates that only six percent of the production population has been impacted. The most recent example (MY2025) is the least affected, with just 42,309 vehicles in the recall, while the 2024 names 114,706 vehicles, and the 2023 names 114,755. New Rearview Cameras for Malibu Owners Chevrolet The solution, as we noted in the introduction, is for dealers to replace the rearview camera altogether, and dealers have already been notified of the recall. Unfortunately, it seems that it will take some time to get everything they need to service customers, as this is a phased recall, and customers will only be notified of the remedy on May 18. In the meantime, owners can search their VINs on nhtsa.gov to see if their Malibu falls under this campaign. This isn't the only recall the Malibu has faced in recent months; in November, the Malibu was recalled for a failing turbocharger that could, unsurprisingly, put the car into limp mode. With the Malibu now gone, affordable sedans in America are rarer than ever, but both Chrysler and Ford have hinted at reentering this area of the market. View the full article

Mercedes-AMG Is Allowing Customers to Build Their Own Engines
True EnthusiastAny true Petrol Head will claim that any involvement with the car is part of the lifestyle. Car guys like to fettle and tinker with their vehicles, getting to know them in depth, including their quirks and features. This is admittedly easier to do with older vehicles; the lack of technology and simpler engines lead to DIY moments. Modern cars are built differently and often require specialists for repairs and tuning (unless absolutely necessary), but sometimes rare opportunities to add a personal touch to your new car come along. Build Your Own Mercedes-AMG EngineTwo very lucky owners, Andrew from Australia and Johannes from the Netherlands, were invited to take part in a special process. Mercedes-Benz has invited them to the Affalterbach plant to help build the engines that will be placed in their upcoming new cars. This is part of an exclusive offer to owners who've signed up for the AMG Private Lounge membership, an exclusive online group of AMG owners and enthusiasts. The AMG Private lounge offers exclusive content, news, and special event invitations. Members also have access to special merchandise and to AMG experts called the AMG Allstars. When it comes to the build-your-own-engine program, it's available to people buying high-performance models such as the AMG GT or SL 63. As we know, Mercedes-Benz AMG engines are known for the "one man, one engine" policy, in which one engine expert will sign the plaque on the engine cover after completion. This gives owners an idea of who built their specific motor, and both these lucky owners will be able to not only meet the builder but also give them a helping hand under the watchful eyes, of course. AMG builds around 20,000 engines a year, under the guidance and expert hands of just 50 AMG master engine builders. Mercedes-Benz/YouTube View the 2 images of this gallery on the original article Involving the CustomerApparently, Mercedes-Benz AMG isn't the only one offering a similar experience. General Motors does the same for Corvette buyers at a sum of $5,000. It's a returning program for 2026 commemorating the launch of the ZR1 Corvette. Ferrari also offers a program that invites owners to visit Maranello to watch the build, but not to partake. Some boutique restomodders also give owners a chance to build their cars, such as Zeigler/Bailey, an Australian-based 911 restomod company. Zeigler/Bailey says this process allows owners to build a more in-depth relationship and understanding of the car-building process. A 4-Minute EV Charge Is Here—But There’s a Catch
Better than a BYD Blade Geely has a new battery technology that charges faster than BYD's Blade 2.0, and it's called the "Energee Golden Brick." A new kind of race has been brewing lately, and it's not happening at a race track, but at charging stations. Automakers have been quite showy about how fast their cars can power up, with BYD leading the charge – pun intended. As reported by Car News China, Lynk and Co, a brand under the Geely group, claims that its 95 kWh battery pack can charge from 10 to 70% in just 4 minutes and 22 seconds, which is about 38 seconds faster than BYD's Flash Charging standard, which takes five minutes to achieve the same result. It looks like we have a new leader in the space of "fastest to charge." BYD The Golden Brick From 10 to 80%, Geely's 900V Energee Golden Brick gets through that in just five minutes and 32 seconds. From 10% to 97%, Geely's EV took only 8 minutes and 42 seconds. In comparison, BYD's 10 to 97 test yielded about 9 minutes of charge time. Bottom line is, Geely's is faster. The hardware is what makes this speed possible. Geely's peak power is 1,100 kW, achieved at low battery power levels. The system can "ramp down" (if you could even call it that) to about 500 kW when the battery reaches 75%, and 350 kW when the vehicle reaches 97%. Even at 97%, the charger's output is similar to some faster chargers at their peak. Keeping temperatures in check in the system requires a full liquid-cooling system. Heat is the number one cause of battery degradation in pretty much anything with a power cell, honestly, so keeping that cool is part of the challenge of faster and faster charging. Lynk and Co There's a Catch For now, the best that Geely gets out of this technology is bragging rights. It's no use to you and me if we can't find the appropriate charger. That's the problem that Geely might face with this particular technology. While reverse compatibility shouldn't be an issue, it's getting to a station with the ultra-fast charging standard ready to use. Geely's been slower to roll out these next-generation stations. BYD has already installed its 5,000th megawatt Flash Charging station and expects to roll out another 20,000 stations by year-end to ensure that the new charging standard will be utilized by its consumers. On the other hand, the Geely group's ultra-fast charging network is about a quarter of BYD's. For now, Geely may claim bragging rights, but if the company can't expand its network fast enough, maybe BYD will still be the last to laugh. Consumers Win and Lose at the Same Time While faster and faster charging speeds are good if you're in a pinch, long term battery performance, safety, and longevity becomes a concern. Fast charging puts an immense strain on battery chemistry and fast charging is ideally only used when it is absolutely necessary. As the largest EV battery producing country in the world, Chinese automakers are really pushing the boundaries of battery technology. Geely's going to fight an uphill battle to get its new charging standard out, and that means new cars that are capable of 1,100 kW charging and setting up charging stations for customers to take advantage of. It may take a while longer for Geely to accomplish its goal. In that time, BYD's current megawatt standard would have already pulled ahead in terms of adoption. In the end, the bigger question is: Does the consumer win? Only time will tell, and only if the charging standard can guarantee safety. Should EV makers continue to push charging speeds closer and closer to fuel-fill up speeds? I think we could hit a wall very soon, and I hope that doesn't involve a few literal press fire. Infiniti Wants a 700-HP QX80 to Rival Cadillac Escalade V
Big PowerThere was a time not long ago when manufacturers were one-upping each other in power. It seemed like every new model would offer a performance variant that trumps the competition. Those days have slowly faded as the market shifts toward a more fuel-efficient focus, but there are still dedicated models that will keep the power-hungry enthusiast happy. You wouldn't think of big SUVs as prime candidates for performance upgrades, but surprisingly, this segment still soldiers on with the likes of the Cadillac Escalade V, Range Rover V8, and more. Infiniti apparently wants to join in. Infiniti 700-hp Infiniti QX80Speaking to The Drive, Nissan and Infiniti's Senior VP of U.S. Marketing and Sales, Tiago Castro, said the brand would ideally like to offer a 700-horsepower version of the flagship SUV QX80, but timing would be the deciding factor. Castro himself is a proclaimed enthusiast, with his first car being a manual Infiniti G35. He points out that Cadillac is currently struggling to build Escalade V models fast enough to meet the demand. This, he believes, is the key indicator that the market wants a big, powerful SUV. The Escalade is a beast of a car with a supercharged V8 that makes 682 hp, which could be Castro's barometer for the 700 hp claim on the QX80. Castro also said that Infiniti is working behind the scenes to reintroduce a dedicated performance line, firmly stating that the brand will connect well with buyers through the performance cars. The QX80 is just one of the many they are considering for future power upgrades. Just a month ago, it was reported that the automaker was working on a QX80 Red Sport with 600 hp. Also in the works is a Red Sport sedan with a manual transmission. Infiniti Careful PlanningAs optimistic as the executive is, he also notes that the internal discussion is whether it would be better to go for a 700 hp model or if the planned 600 hp is enough. It seems that his key consideration factor revolves around demand, and he sees the Red Sport as something that would right now have the demand. Given his acknowledgment of the high Escalade V sales, Castro might just use that as his main push to finally get the performance line flowing into dealerships sooner rather than later. Switching to EV Could Save You $1,805 Annually With Today's Gas Prices
CircumstancesThe past few years have been tough for the EV industry; some of the causes stem from the removal of government incentives, leading to a gradual decline in sales and to major EV plans being paused or, in some cases, stopped altogether. An unforeseen event has somewhat tipped the scales back in favor of EV mobility. Circumstances dictated by the sudden, sharp rise in fuel prices brought about by the Middle East conflict are prompting people to crunch the numbers. Mostafa Bassim/Anadolu via Getty Images EVs are the Economic Choice?A report byAutomotive News cites a study by Coltura, a Seattle-based non-profit group. This analysis considers the current factors affecting gas prices, since prices have surged by more than 30 percent since February, with the national average rising from $3.41 in March to $4.14 in April. According to Coltura, people who switch from gasoline to EVs can save as much as $1,805 per year on fuel and maintenance. Going further, Coltura says these prices will remain high and volatile due to disruptions to safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz, which is considered one of the world's most vital oil routes. The policy director at Coltura, Rob Sargent, said that to get the $1,805 savings, they accounted for the fact that the average U.S. driver accumulates 15,000 miles a year. Interestingly, the more you drive, the more you save, computing someone who does 25,000 miles rendered assumed savings of $3,008 a year. In fact, there is even a free calculator by Coltura that you can use to simulate some of the savings. In it, you can enter vital data to inform your thinking about EV savings versus gasoline. It'll ask you for your average yearly miles, how much you spend on fuel, and even car payments. Kia Used Is the Way To GoA key factor deterring people from buying EVs is also the high prices they usually command. Sargent admits that a large portion of the population can't afford brand-new EVs, but is quick to point out that there are many affordable used options available to everyone. Sargent also says that further ignoring the EV shift could be bad for the U.S. economy and could lead to a future in which all Americans have no choice but to overpay for fuel. The Trump administration has dealt some vital blows to the EV industry, repealing the $7,500 tax credit and even suing California for its own emissions standards that go against the administration's policy. No Minivans Make IIHS Safety List as Rear-Seat Safety Falls Short
No Top Safety Pick for MinivansConsidering that minivans are geared towards families, it's rather shocking to learn that the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety didn't include a single one on its Top Safety Pick roster. There were affordable compacts in the list, as well as SUVs of varying shapes and sizes, but family shuttles were noticeably absent. So, what gives? Following the Institute's new, tougher testing guidelines for moderate overlap crashes, all the minivans it tested simply didn't cut the mustard in terms of rear-occupant protection. More shockingly, none of the models even earned an Acceptable grade for protecting rear passengers. Toyota "It's Disappointing," Says IIHS"It's disappointing that minivans continue to struggle to provide the best available protection for passengers in the back, considering that these are supposed to be family vehicles," said David Harkey, the current president of the IIHS. The models tested were the Chrysler Pacifica, Honda Odyssey, Kia Carnival, and Toyota Sienna. The Pacifica, Carnival, and Sienna received a rating of Marginal, while the Odyssey scored Poor in the new moderate overlap test. It's the very reason none of these vans even came close to earning a Top Safety Pick award from the Institute. Honda High Injury IndexesDuring the tests, it was observed that there were elevated head/neck and chest injury risks for rear-seat passengers. The dummies measured forces high enough to cause concern for the IIHS. For the Carnival, it only offered marginal protection to the head/neck and chest, while the Pacifica did not provide adequate protection to the chest, and the side airbags failed to deploy. For the Odyssey, there were exceedingly high forces on the dummy's head and neck, hence the Poor score. While the dummies in the Sienna didn't actually record extreme forces, there was a high risk of 'submarining' wherein the seatbelt slides up into a passenger's abdomen, increasing the likelihood of injury. The structure of the vans isn't the problem; rather, excessive forces from the seatbelt tensioners, as well as poor positioning of the seatbelts, are. https://www.youtube.com/shorts/16kdsb6lYS4 Improvements Coming Soon? It's safe to say that the manufacturers of these minivans will be finding ways to improve the outcome soon. That said, it's not totally bad news, as all received a rating of Good in the small overlap crash test, while the Sienna and Odyssey fared well in side impact testing. But the point that IIHS is driving home is that these cars can't be safe in just one or two aspects; it has to be the whole package. Either way, it's in everyone's best interest to address the root of the problem, and hopefully the changes have been applied since the release of the test results. Gas Dodge Charger Outsells EV 7 to 1 as Stellantis EV Sales Collapse
The first quarter of 2026 was a really bad one for Stellantis EV sales in the United States amid the EV retreat in the market. Electric vehicle sales declined across the board particularly after the third quarter of 2025 when the EV federal tax credit was axed, and the trend continued in Q1 this year, with Stellantis seeing some dramatic declines. While the report notes that the automaker’s overall sales rose 4% over the first quarter of 2025, the Dodge Charger Daytona, Jeep Wagoneer S and Fiat 500e EVs saw massive year-over-year declines that neared 100% for each of the three models. Dodge Charger ICE Vs EV: It's Not Even a Contest Dodge Starting with the Dodge Charger, Q1 2026 provided a good opportunity to see how customers react when faced with the choice of a gas engine and a battery-electric powertrain for the same model. Buyers went overwhelmingly for the gas-powered Dodge Charger, which outsold its all-electric sibling 7 to 1. Dodge sold 1,672 six-cylinder Chargers compared to 240 Charger BEVs. Sales of the all-electric muscle car dropped 88 percent from 1,947 units in the first quarter of 2025. That said, it’s worth pointing out that sales of the gas-powered Charger 4-Door and 2-Door—1,672 units in Q1 2026—are still very low compared to the previous generation Charger sedan and Challenger coupe, which exceeded a combined 20,000 units in Q1 2024 even after production of both models ended in December 2023. Jeep Wagoneer S and Fiat 500e Sales Dropped 93% and 85% in Q1 2026 Chase Bierenkoven Moving on to the Jeep brand, the Wagoneer S midsize electric SUV had a rough first quarter as well, with sales plunging 93% to 175 units, down from 2,595 in Q1 2025. Of the entire Stellantis USA lineup, only Fiat 500e sales were lower—excluding “zombie” models like the Jeep Renegade, Dodge Challenger and Fiat 500X, which appear in the Q1 sales report after sitting on dealer lots for months or even years. The Wagoneer S has received mixed reviews so far, with the buggy software, questionable build quality, inconsistent brake feel and high pricing—it start at over $65,000—being frequently cited as downsides, while the performance, sleek styling and luxurious interior are generally appreciated. The abysmal Wagoneer S sales spells bad news for Jeep, which is getting ready to welcome its second EV to the lineup this spring, the Recon off-roader. Fiat Finally, the Fiat 500e is another Stellantis EV that flopped in Q1 2026, with sales collapsing 85% to 68 units, down from 448 units year-over-year. The electric city car is suffering in the US not only because of the overall EV downturn but also because it has a limited range of 149 miles and it's too expensive. The 2025 Fiat 500e starts at $30,500 (excluding $1,995 destination), which is simply too much for a car this small. The 2027 Chevy Bolt and 2026 Nissan Leaf are significantly bigger and more practical cars that offer more range while costing less than the Fiat. View the full article

NBA Player Arrested After 100 MPH Run in 1,064-HP Corvette ZR1
Speed Has Its LimitsThe Chevrolet C8 Corvette ZR1 is undeniably one of the most extreme Corvettes ever built, with 1,064 horsepower on tap. But like any high-performance car, it still has to be kept in check on public roads. One NBA player learned that the hard way after allegedly being caught speeding in a white Corvette ZR1 at more than 100 mph. According to Action News 5, Brandon Clarke, the Memphis Grizzlies’ No. 15 power forward, was arrested last week in Cross County, Arkansas. He reportedly initially refused to pull over, and the pursuit ended only after a second deputy joined. To make matters worse, officers allegedly found more than 200 grams of kratom – classified as a Schedule I controlled substance in the state – along with a THC vape pen that tested positive for marijuana. Chevrolet Not Your Average CorvetteIn general, the Corvette ZR1 would not be an easy car to go after. With a 5.5-liter twin-turbo V8 producing more than 1,000 horsepower, it can sprint from 0 to 60 mph in just 2.3 seconds when equipped with the ZTK Performance Package. It also has a top speed of 233 mph, though that is, of course, all but unusable on public roads. As a result of his actions, Clarke was charged with improper passing, possession of a controlled substance, fleeing/exceeding the speed limit, and trafficking a controlled substance. Clarke was released on a $25,000 bond, but he will not return for the remainder of the 2025–26 season. The Grizzlies forward has been recovering from a right calf sprain, and recent evaluations reportedly showed he still needs more time to heal before being cleared for high-intensity court work. He is, however, expected to return next season. The team missed the playoffs this year after securing the eighth seed the previous season. Chevrolet The Cost of Going FastThe Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 is often seen as a value supercar thanks to its price-to-performance ratio, making it a compelling alternative to models like the Ferrari 296 GTB, though it remains far from affordable. It starts at $185,000 and sits below the ZR1X, which adds a hybrid setup and an all-wheel-drive system to produce 1,250 horsepower. Production takes place at General Motors’ Bowling Green Assembly Plant in Kentucky, alongside other Corvette variants, including the entry-level Corvette Stingray. Next-Gen Chevy Camaro Set to Return on Cadillac CT5 Platform
An Icon May Be RewrittenA report from GM Authority states that General Motors has approved a replacement for the Chevrolet Camaro. Few details have been disclosed, but the next-generation model is reportedly expected to ride on the Alpha platform, which also underpins the Cadillac CT5 and other rear-drive sedans. With that said, the Camaro, if the reports are accurate, would enter its seventh generation and likely avoid returning as a crossover, a body type some may expect, given the strong demand for crossovers and SUVs. The reported use of GM’s Alpha platform also suggests the revived nameplate is unlikely to go fully electric, unlike the EV version of its longtime archrival, the Dodge Charger. Chevrolet Built on Familiar GroundThis topic emerged amid GM’s plans to utilize its Lansing Grand River plant in Michigan, which currently builds the CT5 and the outgoing CT4. The facility is also reportedly set to produce an upcoming Buick sedan, expanding a lineup that is currently limited to crossovers, including the Envision. Given relatively weak demand for sedans in the U.S. – enough to push brands like Ford to largely exit the segment – the annual production of the Buick sedan could reportedly be capped at between 10,000 and 20,000 units, according to Automotive News. As for the Camaro, production is expected to begin at the Lansing plant in fall 2027 alongside the next-generation CT5. GM will reportedly build between 60,000 and 70,000 units of the CT5 and Camaro annually. If that holds, it would mark the Camaro’s return to the market after its 2024 discontinuation, which came amid several factors, including GM’s EV pivot – an approach that, over time, has not fully played out as expected. Chevrolet A Plot Twist May Be LoomingA Camaro retaining a performance-focused powertrain would offer a more affordable option for enthusiasts who may not be willing to spend $70,000 on a C8 Corvette. However, GM Authority noted that the replacement “might not be exactly what you would expect.” While nothing is official yet, the return of combustion-powered models appears to reflect a broader shift in the industry, as seen in the revival of the Hemi V8 for the Ram 1500 TRX. That shift also comes as the current administration has moved to ease federal emissions and fuel-economy rules, creating friendlier conditions for combustion cars.
