This is Probably What the Facelifted BMW 7 Series Will Look Like
It’s coming up on four years since we first laid eyes on the imposing-looking seventh-generation BMW 7 Series and its electric counterpart, the i7, and that means it’s almost facelift time. We’ve had glimpses at the full-sized sedan’s refreshed look through both disguised prototypes and official teasers from BMW, but this new unofficial rendering, from digital artist Nicolás Cavero – @futurecarsnow on Instagram – gives us perhaps our best idea yet of what to expect. The Grille’s Not Going Anywhere Anyone hoping the updated 7 Series might follow in the footsteps of the new iX3 and i3 and adopt a smaller kidney grille arrangement than the gigantic snout the model’s had since its 2022 launch will be disappointed. That much has been clear since BMW officially teased the facelift a couple of weeks ago, showing that the massive grilles are still there in all their fully-illuminated glory. Cavero has taken that grille, along with the reworked LED running lights seen in BMW’s teaser, and worked them onto his rendering, which also incorporates a more intricately angled bumper design inspired by the one found on BMW’s Neue Klasse EVs. The main headlight units, set lower down in the bumper, have been made smaller, something visible in the spy shots we’ve seen of the car. If the rendering is on the money, then the side-by-side comparison with the outgoing car shows a design that’s a little cleaner overall, albeit not shying away from the 7 Series’ most controversial design element. Coming Next Month BMW With the facelifted 7 Series’ debut at the 2026 Beijing Auto Show around a month away, details on the car are still scarce, but we expect the powertrain range – consisting of the inline-six 740i, V8 760i, plug-in hybrid 750e and electric i7 – to remain broadly the same, likely with the gas models dropping the ‘i’ from the end of their names in line with BMW’s new naming strategy. A range-topping V8-powered M760 is also rumored to be joining the range, and BMW’s also confirmed that it’ll be one of the first models to get an Alpina derivative now that the former tuner is a fully-fledged part of BMW. Lots to get excited about, then, even if the updated 7 is arriving at an unusual time for the full-size luxury sedan. While one of its traditional rivals, the Mercedes S-Class, has itself just had a major update, the other, Audi’s A8, is about to disappear without an immediate direct successor. Audi Built a Huge 670-HP Electric SUV You Won’t Be Able to Buy
Audi is getting ready to launch its largest ever SUV, the Q9, but over in China, it’s already revealed something even bigger than the existing Q7. Well, Audi hasn’t, but AUDI, the all-caps, all-electric China-only sub-brand, has in the shape of the E7X. Following the first official pictures arriving late last year, and ahead of the car making its official debut at the Beijing Auto Show next month, more info on the E7X has appeared on AUDI’s website. AUDI, Not Audi AUDI The AUDI brand was launched in China in 2024, and differentiates itself from the Audi we know – which also sells cars in China – with its block capital spelling and the minimalist, techy design of its cars. You also won’t find four rings anywhere on its cars, as AUDI doesn’t use them. A product of the Volkswagen Group’s joint venture with Chinese state-owned carmaker SAIC, AUDI builds cars tailored specifically to the Chinese market, starting with the wagon-ish E5 Sportback. Given that the brand's gotten off to a slow start, AUDI will be hoping a more fashionable car like a big SUV will move things along, and the E7X is that car. Big Car, Huge Battery AUDI We already knew that the E7X would come with 670 hp dual-motor and 402 hp single-motor powertrains, but now we’ve got a bit more info on what those powertrains can do. 0-62 mph on the dual-motor variant is given as a very specific 3.97 seconds – let’s call it 4.0 – and an all-aluminum chassis is said to contribute to better handling. It’ll need a lightweight chassis to offset the weight of the battery, though, which is an enormous 109kWh unit – bigger than you get in the likes of the Cadillac Lyriq, BMW iX and Volvo EX90. Maximum range is nevertheless quoted at 467 miles, which is less impressive now that we’re firmly in the era of the 500-plus-mile EV, especially since that’s likely on the more forgiving Chinese test cycle. The E7X, however, benefits from a 900V electric architecture, allowing it to handle charging speeds of up to 400kW. That, says Audi, is enough to add 200 miles of range in as little as 10 minutes. A Luxury Prospect AUDI AUDI hasn’t yet revealed the interior of the E7X, but says it’s a five-seater, setting it apart from the seven-seater Q7, a car it's slightly wider and taller than and almost as long as. That hints at a more upmarket position for the E7X, and we’d expect the interior to share the same fundamentals as the E5 Sportback, including its dashboard-spanning screen display. Full details will be revealed at the Beijing Auto Show, kicking off on April 24, but don’t expect the E7X to ever make it outside of the Chinese market – the rest of the world will have to make do with the Q7 and upcoming Q9 for its massive Audi SUV fix. Lamborghini Wants to Revive a Car It Hasn't Sold for 50 Years
Lamborghini started out producing grand tourers, and in the late 1970s, it sold a 2+2 grand tourer called the Jarama 400 GT, but in 1976, the Sant'Agata Bolognese company ended production of the GT and hasn't made another since (the Urraco survived until 1979, but despite its 2+2 seating, it's classified as a sports car). Today, the automaker offers the wild Reveulto supercar, the Temerario super sports car, and the Urus super SUV. The gap between the two-seaters and the SUV is considerable, with nothing to rival the likes of the Ferrari Amalfi, but CEO Stephen Winkelmann wants to close it. And he still doesn't want another SUV. Lamborghini Wants to Offer a New GT, But It Won't Be a Sedan Lamborghini If your ears pricked up at the thought of a low-slung four-door sedan with a Lamborghini badge, perhaps you imagine that the Italian automaker could produce something in the vein of the ill-fated Lamborghini Estoque concept, which debuted at the 2008 Paris Motor Show but failed to reach production because of that year's global financial crisis. But speaking with Road & Track, Winkelmann said the automaker has "ruled out a sedan and small SUV." The CEO added that "what is missing is a grand touring car. A two-door 2+2." Lamborghini This seems to imply that Lamborghini could introduce something like the Amalfi as one of several new combustion cars it plans to launch in 2026, but it could also mean a more toned-down version of the Lanzador concept, which is expected to become a plug-in hybrid rather than the EV originally proposed. The Lanzador concept looks like a two-door, four-seater crossover, but perhaps Lamborghini will produce something lower slung and more coupe-like. Lamborghini GT Could Be a Moneymaker Lamborghini Cars like the Aston Martin DB12 and Bentley Continental are ideal for long drives, blending brutal performance with luxurious interiors, and although last year was strong for Lamborghini, profits dipped. With a new grand tourer to offer customers, using existing technology (the Temerario's V8 will last at least two life cycles), the brand may find a way to improve its financial outlook while returning to its roots. The first production car that Ferruccio Lamborghini's company offered was the 350 GT, and the Jarama we opened this piece with was his favorite, so bringing a two-door with space for four back into the Lamborghini range would surely be a full-circle moment rich with history. The Safest New Cars Under $30,000, According to IIHS
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has announced the latest round of models to attain its Top Safety Pick+ accolade, the agency’s highest rating for vehicle safety. The safety body recently introduced tougher safety rules for crash avoidance systems and rear-seat safety, but despite this, an impressive 45 vehicles earned a Top Safety Pick+ award. At a time when new cars are unaffordable for many Americans, it’s particularly promising to see that many award winners fall into the sub-$30,000 price category. Here’s a closer look. Small and Cheap Doesn’t Mean Unsafe Kia K4 Kia View the 3 images of this gallery on the original article There’s still a perception that smaller, cheaper cars aren’t as safe as larger luxury models, but many IIHS award winners prove otherwise. Surprisingly, no minivans or small pickups earned awards this year, and that includes the lower Top Safety Pick tier. Toyota “It’s disappointing that minivans continue to struggle to provide the best-available protection for passengers in the back, considering that these are supposed to be family vehicles,” said IIHS President David Harkey. “Based on these results, parents may want to consider some of the more affordable sedans and SUVs that earn awards.” The appearance of four Mazdas under $30,000—and another four priced over $30,000—highlights the Japanese brand’s incredible safety record in recent years. Earlier in 2026, Consumer Reports’ new Safety Verdict ranked Mazda ahead of all other car brands for overall vehicle safety. Genesis is just behind with five awards, followed by Mazda with four. The only large pickup with a Top Safety Pick+ award is the TeslaCybertruck. One of the biggest changes to IIHS testing has been a focus on vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention, now conducted at speeds of 31, 37, and 43 mpg. A motorcycle and semitrailer are also used as targets, in addition to a passenger car. So far, over 77% of 2026 models earned Acceptable or Good ratings in this test. “Improving crash avoidance is key to achieving our 30x30 vision of reducing U.S. crash deaths by 30% by 2030,” Harkey said. “Stronger structures and better seat belts save lives, but the safest crash is the one that never happens.” What It Means IIHS Vehicle safety tests are as tough as they’ve ever been, so it’s promising to see the large variety of vehicles meeting the IIHS’ criteria for the Top Safety Pick+ award. With rising new-car prices and gas costs, many consumers are downsizing, but the test results prove that this need not come at the expense of safety. Mazda Refused Toyota’s Hybrid Tech for the CX-5 and Built Its Own Instead

That mindset explains why Mazda has been late to EVs. The company has openly admitted that fully electric models have not aligned with its engineering priorities. It already has access to hybrid systems through Toyota and EVs with its Chinese partner, Changan, yet it chose to delay its own solution. The reason is simple. Mazda wants full control over how its cars feel on the road. However, Osuga noted that tuning has limits. For a core model like the next-generation CX-5, Mazda wants complete ownership of the system. It plans to engineer the hybrid drivetrain in-house. The second reason is technical. Mazda has chosen a direct hybrid layout that connects closely to the transmission. This setup is designed to deliver smoother and more linear acceleration. The upcoming hybrid CX-5 will also introduce the new Skyactiv Z engine. Mazda claims it will improve efficiency and emissions without reducing power. Getty Images GM's Going Big on Next-Gen Autonomous FeaturesOne of the world's largest automotive groups, General Motors, is publicizing its efforts to research, develop, and test the next generation of autonomous driving technology. After years of careful planning and internal testing, GM's program is heading for its next developmental milestone, public road testing. This next part of the testing phase follows extensive data collection from manually driven tests across select routes and states. Going onto public roads for testing obviously poses more risk to the program and to other people using the roads. GM has that covered; it published a safety report highlighting the protocols they use to ensure all public testing is safe. As announced, the public testing of automated driving tech will begin this week, but one of the safeguards in place is that each test car will have a driver ready to take over driving duties if needed. According to GM, the data collection phase enabled them to enter the supervised automated testing phase, which had accumulated 1 million miles across 34 states. The supervised automated testing will be done primarily on limited-access roads and highways in California and Michigan. This GM claims will be a fully self-driving system, not heavily dependent on continuous human driver input. Even more impressive is that they say this tech will be available in the Cadillac Escalade IQ by 2028, with other models to follow. At first, the feature will be debuted on highways only, and once deemed safe enough, will be able to do "driveway-to-driveway" journeys. Rolls-Royce’s New Invitation-Only Coachbuild Program Will Produce Ultra-Rare EVs
For years, Rolls-Royce has prided itself on offering a standard of bespoke, coachbuilt models that are unlike anything else on the road. Reserved for only the most respected collectors, examples include 2021’s Boat Tail and 2023’s Droptail. Now, the British luxury marque is introducing the Coachbuild Collection, an invitation-only initiative whereby a limited number-production car is developed by the brand. These models are never to be repeated and acquiring one brings with it access to a series of private events hosted by Rolls-Royce around the world. The first model from the Coachbuilt Collection has also been confirmed to be an EV. In the early years, a rolling chassis was delivered to specialist coachbuilders, who would then build a body of almost any shape that satisfied the client’s wishes. The only requirement from Charles Rolls and Henry Royce was that proportions around the radiator were fixed, so even the most outlandish designs were still identifiable as a Rolls-Royce. The new Coachbuild Collection builds on this legacy. Fully homologated, road-legal cars with unique bodies will be built for only the company’s most loyal clients. These vehicles will be highly limited in number and won’t be repeated, so exclusivity is guaranteed. Clients can participate in the program at one of the global Private Offices, situated in locations like New York, Dubai, and Goodwood. Access to closed testing, design studios, and curated private events form part of the experience—the Coachbuild Collection goes far beyond simply commissioning a new car. Rolls-Royce “I have had the privilege of meeting clients around the world who seek the very pinnacle in luxury and share an extraordinary passion for Rolls-Royce design,” said Chris Brownridge, Chief Executive, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. “It became clear that they wished to see not only what Rolls-Royce would create if left entirely to its own imagination and with the freedom offered by coachbuilding, but they also wanted to witness that journey at every stage. This is something the super-luxury world has never seen before.” The First Rolls-Royce Coachbuild Collection Rolls-Royce The first model set to emerge from the Coachbuild Collection program will be an EV. Rolls-Royce says that has much to do with the positive reception to the Spectre electric coupe, as its silent powertrain beautifully complements the refined nature of the British marque’s vehicles. This will be the first coachbuilt Rolls-Royce EV, after years of these ultra-exclusive models being powered by the iconic V12. No further details have emerged about this new model, but Rolls-Royce promised to share more details next month, so we won’t have to wait much longer. What’s certain is that the new EV will be one of the most valuable cars in the world. Estimates suggest the Boat Tail is valued at around $28 million, reflecting the extraordinary engineering and expertise that go into a coachbuilt Rolls. What It Means Rolls-Royce Many high-end brands aim to reward clients with experiences that go far beyond the usual owner-dealership relationship. Porsche has multiple experience centers around the globe, including one in Los Angeles, where its sports cars can be fully appreciated. This Electric SUV Turns Into a Pickup Truck at the Press of a Button

Walking the floor, I noticed a familiar pattern. Most EVs follow the same formula. They are sleek, quiet, and safe in execution. Then I came across the Deepal E07 Multitruck. It made me stop and take a second look. This is not just another electric crossover. It is one of the most interesting vehicles at the show, and unfortunately, likely one that may never reach U.S. roads. The best way to describe it is a mix of the Hyundai Santa Cruz, Honda Ridgeline, and the TeslaCybertruck. The idea sounds strange, and in person, it looks just as unconventional. Up close, it feels like a car that breaks the usual rules. Can an EV truly be fun? It measures over five meters long and has a long wheelbase. The design is clean and somewhat understated. The numbers, however, tell a different story. The rear-drive version produces about 338 horsepower. The dual-motor AWD version delivers around 590 hp and 476 lb-ft of torque. It can go from 0 to 60 mph in under 4 seconds. Range is rated at roughly 340 miles, or about 317 miles for the AWD version. It also uses an 800-volt system for fast charging. What caught my attention was the transformation feature. I stood there watching it more than once. At the press of a button, the rear glass behind the second row drops. Then the large rear windshield lifts away. The tailgate opens, revealing a real cargo bed. Activate the full sequence, and it goes further. The glass partition lowers, and the bulkhead opens. Manually folding the rear seats down results in a long, flat load space. It feels closer to a pickup than an SUV. It is complex, but also very clever. The Deepal E07 is different. It stayed on my mind long after I walked away from it. Compared to the Tesla Cybertruck, the E07 is less aggressive and more polished. The design and functionality feel more fluid. It embraces its unusual concept instead of hiding it, giving me a lot of Subaru Baja vibes. There is also growing industry interest. Mazda is reportedly exploring working with Deepal on this platform. If that collaboration moves forward, a version of this idea could reach a wider market, including the U.S. Standing there, watching it transform, I kept thinking about how rare this kind of risk has become. The E07 is not perfect. It is complicated and slightly unconventional, and the clunks it makes as it transforms can be a bit disconcerting. Still, it brings something new to the table. Toyota Is Spending $1 Billion to Build More RAV4s and Camrys in America
Betting on What Already WorksToyota announced a $1 billion investment as part of its broader $10 billion U.S. spending plan over the next five years. The move includes boosting production capacity for its top-selling models – the RAV4 and Camry – at its Kentucky plant. Increased production capacity could give the RAV4 and Camry a better shot at competing with the top volume sellers in the U.S., including the Ford F-Series and Chevrolet Silverado. In 2025, the RAV4 ranked as the third-best-selling vehicle in the country, with 479,288 units sold – slightly more than half the total posted by the market-leading F-Series. The Camry, meanwhile, placed eighth with 316,185 units sold, ahead of the Tesla Model Y. Notably, it was the only sedan to crack the top 10 in a market that continues to favor crossovers and SUVs. In addition, increasing Camry production would allow the company to meet demand for U.S.-built models destined for export to Japan, alongside the Tundra and Highlander. Toyota Electrification Without the RushToyota also plans to prepare its Kentucky plant for battery electric vehicle (BEV) production, a move that could help it avoid exposure to tariffs faced by foreign-built EVs like the Hyundai Ioniq 6. Of the $1 billion investment, $800 million will be allocated to the Kentucky facility, while the remaining $200 million will go to its Indiana plant. The Indiana plant will aim to increase production capacity for the Grand Highlander, the brand’s three-row midsize crossover that rivals the Ford Explorer. While it may not match the volume of the RAV4 and Camry, it was still the Japanese marque's sixth-best-selling model in the U.S. last year after the Tundra. Chase Bierenkoven The Multi-Path AdvantageToyota reiterated that the investment is part of its multi-pathway strategy, suggesting it is not rushing into a full transition to electric vehicles – a push that has backfired for some automakers. Demand in the U.S. has recently shifted toward hybrids, aligning with the RAV4 going fully hybrid for the 2026 model year. This latest $10 billion spending plan brings Toyota’s total U.S. investment to nearly $60 billion since it began operating in the country nearly 70 years ago. You Can Buy a Brand-New Ford Escort Mk1 Again, But It Will Cost Your Over $100,000
Humble Beginnings to Legendary StatusA lot of the automotive icons we appreciate today started out as humble models part of a big lineup. Ford's Escort was primarily developed and built as a standard family car, replacing the aging Anglia model. Introduced in the late '60s, the Escort Mk1 quickly became something more than a dependable day-to-day car. Its status comes from a very successful stint as a rally car. It was lauded for being simple but strong, along with Rear Wheel Drive and a modern suspension design for the time. It was a favorite because it handled gravel roads well and was easy to repair on the fly. MST Cars Modern InterpretationSince the MK1 cemented its place in automotive culture as an icon, many people, especially rallying fans, would love to have one. However, given the age of the nameplate, original models are few and far between. Thankfully, restomods or brand new versions of old models are a big thing nowadays. MST Cars is a Welsh-based group that, from the ground up, builds MK1 and Mk2 Ford Escorts. Unlike other restoration companies, MST builds brand-new cars using new components, allowing them to be registered as new as well. The brand's latest project, called the MK1 sports, is a modern reimagination of what an MK1 would look like today, according to MST's standards. Its interior features a minimalist, retro-focused layout with sports reclining seats, a deep-dish steering wheel, and a practical rear storage area. The MK1 sports uses a 2.0-liter 16-valve twin-cam engine that they say produces a decent 180 horsepower. The rear wheels receive power through a 5-speed close-ratio manual transmission, paired with a heavy-duty rear axle and a torque-biasing differential. The axle and diff ensure balanced, engaging handling. Mazda’s EV Strategy Is Changing Around the World
Mazda’s EV Moment Came and WentMazda tried to break into the U.S. EV market with the MX-30, but the model’s reception appeared underwhelming, especially after it was discontinued following the 2023 model year, with the European-spec version later meeting the same fate. That outcome reinforced the brand’s shift toward plug-in hybrids such as the CX-70 and CX-90 amid tightening emissions regulations. With the broader U.S. market now favoring hybrids, Mazda’s EV potential never really had the chance to fully play out stateside. Elsewhere, however, Mazda is taking a different approach. According to a report from Car Expert, Mazda Australia managing director Vinesh Bhindi does not want to rush the brand’s PHEV rollout, even if that means leaving out models like the CX-70 and CX-90. Instead, Mazda plans to lean on its existing plug-in hybrid lineup, including the CX-60 and CX-80, while placing more emphasis on fully electric vehicles. This isn't any normal El Camino, though; it has been converted to have the front end of the very iconic Buick GNX coupe. Upon first glance, you'd be hard-pressed to tell whether it's an El Camino turned GNX or the other way around; that's how good this conversion looks. This particular El Camino is a 1984 model, often referred to as the G-body, and was the last generation of El Caminos. Originally, it came with a selection of engines, from a V6 all the way up to a small-block V8 and a diesel V8, though the latter is famous for being unreliable. The G-body was only in production until 1987, with no replacement coming after. On the other end of this build is a special car, the Buick GNX. This limited-run special edition model was built as a tribute to Buick's manufacturer championship wins in NASCAR during the 81' and 82' seasons. It was also slated to be the grand finale of the GNX model line, and it delivered. Built in partnership with ASC/McLaren, it shared the same G-Body platform as the El Camino, since both brands were under GM. Only 547 GNX's were ever made, and the market value for this car is skyrocketing. Whoever built it, though, did a fantastic job of incorporating the GNX's unmistakable front end and the wider stance. Inside the interior is also up to spec GNX-wise; the seats have the trademark Buick logo, while the rest of the interior was swapped to a full GNX look and feel. Powering this build is the Buick Motorsports 4.1-liter V6 with a Precision turbocharger and a THM200-R4 4-speed automatic transmission. The 4.1 isn't actually the stock engine of the GNX, but is a racing version of the 3.8 that came from the factory. No specific power figures have been declared, but some of the race builds reach in excess of 500 hp after tuning and mods. GM Is Finally Killing the CVT in the Equinox and Terrain
Important Changes for Strong SellersThe Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain might not pull in the same sales numbers as the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4, but these remain vital models in the General Motors portfolio. As such, it's important that the two models remain fresh in ever-stiffening competition and one of the world's toughest segments. While we're just a few months into 2026, there are apparently some changes being prepared for the 2027 model-year versions of the GM compact crossovers. For the most part, it's relatively minor, but a post from GM Inside News caught our attention. Chevrolet So Long, CVTThe one major mechanical update for the 2027 Equinox and Terrain is a new transmission for the two-wheel drive models. Currently, these use a CVT, but according to the post, that will soon be gone. Replacing it is an eight-speed automatic transmission, putting it in line with the all-wheel-drive models. It seems that GM has finally figured out how to fit it to the front-drive versions of it compact crossovers. While it's good news for the anti-CVT crowd, there may be changes to the official fuel-economy figures. GMC Also New for '27Aside from the new transmission, the post mentioned other changes for 2027. There's a new color for the Equinox: Autumn Harvest Metallic, replacing Cacti Green. Equinox RS trims now only come with Torch Red interior accents, and Santorini Blue stitching is gone. Later in the car's model year, an additional safety feature will be included. It comes in the form of the Connected Camera feature that's bundled with the Safety and Technology Package. This allows the vehicle's owner to monitor the environment through the car's interior and exterior cameras. It can be viewed by the MyChevy App. So far, there's no mention of whether the Terrain will get the same feature. Chevrolet Mostly Carried OverIn the case of the Equinox at least, there's a new color and a surveillance feature. The new transmission for both Chevrolet and GMC models is a welcome change, too. However, it seems that the rest of the cars will be carried over from the current model. For reference, there are three trims for the Equinox and another three for the Terrain. For the Chevy, it's LT, RS, and Activ, while for the GMC, it's Elevation, AT4, and Denali. As for prices, the Equinox ranges from $28,800 to $33,600, and the Terrain ranges from $30,200 to $41,900. The Tesla Cybercab robotaxi is unlike any vehicle the American EV manufacturer has built before, and it’s only natural that it attracts a lot of attention wherever people see it. Unsurprisingly, this happened last week in Austin, Texas, where Tesla brought a shiny gold Cybercab prototype at SXSW 2026, providing a good opportunity for a few car influencers to take a closer look at the intriguing fully autonomous vehicle designed for ride-sharing. "Look Ma, No Hands!"Out of Spec Reviews and Kim Java team got to check out the Tesla Cybercab’s exterior design and even sit inside the vehicle and check out its features and materials, providing the best look yet at the two-door coupe that doesn’t have a steering wheel, pedals, or a rear window. Starting with the exterior, it must be said that the Tesla Cybercab featured in the walkaround video is not a production-spec vehicle but a pre-series prototype built in February 2026, and it shows. The panel gaps are not quite at a consumer product level yet, the doors are not perfectly aligned with the body either, and the massive wheel covers are just glued directly to the tires. Of course, once production begins in April, all these things should be corrected. Out of Spec Reviews / YouTube Speaking of the tires, the Tesla Cybercab runs a staggered setup with 215/60 R18 front tires and 225/60 R21 rear tires—both Continental aContact. Another striking thing is the NACS charging port located really low on the rear bumper and not on the side of the vehicle where you can usually find it on Tesla vehicles. The lack of a rear window gives the Cybercab a futuristic look, but it’s for practical reasons too because the FSD computer doesn’t need a window to look through when it’s driving the vehicle—it's got nine cameras for that. Another quirky detail is the trunk, which is narrow but quite long; given that this vehicle is designed for two passengers, it should be enough to cover their luggage needs. A 21-Inch Center Display and Cupholders Is All You Get Inside Out of Spec Reviews / YouTube As you can imagine, the video focuses on the interior more, where you get access through two massive doors that swing up and forward to provide wide access to the two-seater cabin. The power-operated butterfly doors are designed without traditional handles for a minimalist and fully autonomous look. They make it easier to get it and out, especially in tight parking spaces. Once inside, the first thing that hits you is the massive legroom amplified on the left-hand side by the lack of pedals. Headroom is good, though Kyle Conner reckoned it could use more, and the seats are comfortable. He also noted that the shiny material that covers the seats looks cheaper than in Tesla’s other cars, and strongly believes Tesla should use its vegan leather in the Cybercab as well. Out of Spec Reviews / YouTube The 21-inch center screen is obviously impossible to ignore as it’s bigger than in any other Tesla vehicle; also, there’s no steering wheel next to it so it dominates the entire cabin. Interestingly, the window switches and USB-C ports are integrated into the bottom of the screen and are not easily visible, so riders might have a hard time locating them. Now, although the guys didn’t get to ride in the Tesla Cybercab, they noticed the cabin is really quiet with the doors closed and windows rolled up, and also reckoned that the suspension is really soft by how much the car dipped when getting in the vehicle. It makes perfect sense for a robotaxi to have a cushy ride. Feeling Lucky? Ford Is Giving Buyers Another Chance to Buy the $300,000 Mustang GTD
Cost No ObjectThe GTD is easily the most expensive factory Ford Mustang in history. It might take a while before that record is beaten, and at over $300,000, we're not holding our breath. That said, it's an entirely different animal compared to the garden-variety GT, and it's a few rungs higher than the already potent Dark Horse. Despite the price tag, Ford has shifted a good amount of Mustang GTDs. From a previous report, the Blue Oval managed to shift 231 examples of what's essentially a street-legal GT3 racer. Not only that, the first batch of models has already been spoken for. Turns out, there is a market for a mega-buck Mustang. Ford For the Lucky FewFord received well over 7,500 applications for the Mustang GTD, and it was initially said that production would only last until 2026. A lucky few have received their GTDs, as mentioned above, and heaps more are ready to be delivered. It's estimated that fewer than 2,000 will be built. Okay, it's not totally rare, but you're also looking at about 2,000 customers fighting for slots worldwide. Considering that Ford got that many applications, that's over 5,000 hopefuls who missed their chance. Perhaps due to overwhelming demand, the folks from Dearborn have made an important announcement. Ford Second ChancesFord believes in second chances. That's why the company announced that it's reopening applications for the GTD yet again. It will be for the 2027 to 2029 model years, and like before, we're expecting a limited number of slots. It wasn't said how many Ford will build for the second batch, but those who missed out the first time shouldn't let this opportunity pass. Those interested can head on down to the Ford website to, er, register their interest. Mind you, that's not the application just yet, as that one opens at a later date. The applications will officially open on April 17, 2026. Those who registered will get a reminder email from the Mustang GTD Concierge team shortly before the application window opens. Those who apply will then receive a status update this summer. So, for those with over $300,000 to spare for one of these, it's best to let Ford know you're very keen on purchasing one. Leaked BMW Electric M3 Could Have Around 800 HP
Coming Soon: The First Neue Klasse MThe i3 is now out in the open, but we all know that the M version is all but inevitable. Besides, we've seen spy shots of the car, and BMW isn't denying that it'll happen. It will be interesting times over at the M division as it prepares to roll out its first-ever EV performance car. With that, we could expect the M3 EV, or iM3, should BMW choose that name, to make its world premiere within the year. Alleged leaked photos from Bimmer Post show that the car is pretty much complete, and the only thing to do now is hold the launch event. BMW Like the Look?These alleged leaked images began circulating on Instagram shortly after the i3's debut. If true, some design elements might not look too surprising, as we already know what the non-M version looks like. Of course, there are the chunkier fenders, a unique front bumper, and a generally more aggressive stance. That said, we're genuinely curious if there will be a Touring model for it. So far, there are no photos of the rear, but we're imagining it with a wider stance, too. The car could feature some unique design elements on the sides, and we're also expecting entirely different wheel designs. One thing that did catch our attention was the opening in the hood. It's possibly an aero enhancement, like an air outlet. BimmerPost/RREPlayer Specs to ExpectThe first electric M is confirmed to get a quad-motor arrangement, one powering each wheel. The drive system will essentially be the iX3's all-wheel drive system on steroids. Whereas the i3 and iX3 have dual motors, the four motors in the M3 EV/iM3 constantly shift power to each wheel for sharper turns, at least in theory. A rear-wheel drive mode will also be included. Official horsepower figures have yet to be released, but reports suggest around 800 hp. What we do know is its battery size, as BMW said it will be installing a 100 kWh pack in the electric M3. It won't be for the sake of efficiency, though, as it's there to give it some meaningful range even with that much power. And for those who aren't sold on the idea of a battery-powered M3, fear not. There will still be a fuel-fed model packing a turbocharged inline-six with a plug-in hybrid system. Mercedes-AMG cars have always commanded respect among rivals and high-performance car enthusiasts, but whenever the words 'Black Series' are mentioned, fear also comes into the equation. AMG's Black Series models have always taken things a step further, blurring the lines between road and race cars, and that is going to be the case with the upcoming Black Series model as well—more than ever, actually. The Next AMG GT Black Series and AMG GT3 Will Almost Be Twins Mercedes-AMG Mercedes-AMG has just teased the new AMG GT Black Series, which it describes as “the most radical Black Series ever.” Those are not small words considering the illustrious line of Black Series models built in the past, but there’s one thing that convinces us Mercedes is dead serious about this: the Black Series serves as a homologation model for the next-generation GT3 customer race car. As it turns out, the Concept AMG GT Track Sport unveiled last year was more than a concept. Mercedes-AMG has now confirmed that the GT Track Sport serves as a technology platform for both the new AMG GT3 race car and the future AMG GT Black Series road-legal supercar. Mercedes-AMG “We are developing the most extreme Black Series ever. At the same time, we want to set the next record-breaker in motorsport with the future GT3. The foundation for this is the Concept AMG GT Track Sport – a technology demonstrator that was more than just a concept from the very start,” said Michael Schiebe, Chairman of the Management Board of Mercedes-AMG GmbH. “It is our unambiguous commitment to maximum performance, a promise for the racetrack and the road alike. At AMG, we develop vehicles to exceed expectations. And that is exactly what the future Black Series and the new GT3 will do.” Twinning the development of the future GT3 and Black Series reveals a lot about the Affalterbach’s intentions. In essence, AMG will use the road-legal variant of the 2025 concept car as a homologation model for the GT3 successor, which will also enable the Black Series to become more capable on the track than ever before through a more aggressive aero and chassis setup. Testing Now Underway on the Nürburgring Nordschleife Mercedde Mercedes-AMG has been testing the prototype extensively on test tracks and racetracks since October 2025 in a yellow-green with red accents camouflage livery. Tracks included AMG’s in-house development track in Immendingen, as well as Bilster Berg, Portimão and Monteblanco. But now, the next testing phase has begun on the fearsome Nürburgring Nordschleife, and to mark the occasion, AMG has unveiled new liveries for the GT3 and Black Series; the former gets red as a central element of its color scheme, while the latter focuses on yellow-green. Mercedes-AMG has refrained from providing technical details of the next GT Black Series, but it has already confirmed an updated version of its flat-plane crank V8 for the upcoming Mythos model based on the CLE Coupe. The same engine is expected to power the new Black Series. Mercedes-AMG Expect more power than the current AMG GT, which makes up to 603 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque in the GT 63 Pro model from a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8. The Black Series' performance should also go up a notch from the GT 63 Pro’s 0-62 mph time of 3.2 seconds and 197 mph top speed. The new AMG GT Black Series’ radical nature will be obvious in the way it looks too. These teaser images provide a test of what's to come, namely a more aggressive aero package consisting of a towering rear wing, massive front splitter, vents in the hood, front fenders, and rear bumper, as well as a huge air diffuser out back. Subaru Teases Its Most Powerful Electric SUV Yet
After a few years when Subaru’s only EV was the slightly underwhelming Solterra, the Japanese marque has stepped up its game with several new fully electric models. The Solterra itself was substantially updated for 2026, before the smaller Uncharted and larger Trailseeker were unveiled. Now, Subaru is planning to launch a fourth electric SUV in the U.S., and it’s easily the most powerful one so far. The new vehicle was teased this week ahead of a planned unveiling in April. Subaru’s Most Powerful New Model Subaru Although Subaru said very little about the new SUV, it confirmed an output of 420 horsepower—more than the already rapid Trailseeker, which has 375 hp. It’s exactly as much power as you’ll get from a new Dodge Charger R/T. The vehicle will have the brand’s Symmetrical all-wheel-drive system, so it’s very likely to have dual electric motors. In the teaser, the new SUV’s front lighting signature mirrors what we’ve seen on the likes of the Solterra and Trailseeker, and it also has an illuminated logo. Not much else can be gleaned from the sole, shadowy image provided. The Trailseeker can achieve a 0-60 mph time of around 4.4 seconds, suggesting that this new SUV will be capable of inching closer to four seconds. Subaru doesn’t yet have a three-row electric SUV to match the versatility of the Ascent, and the company confirmed that a three-row EV would be on its way this year. What’s interesting is that the smaller Subaru electric SUVs share their powertrains and outputs with various Toyotas; the Trailseeker is Subaru’s version of the Toyota bZ Woodland, for instance. Therefore, it would make sense for Subaru to launch an equivalent of the 2027 three-row Highlander, but that model only has up to 338 hp—far less than the 420 hp of Subaru’s new model. We’ll know more about the new Subaru when it’s revealed at the 2026 New York International Auto Show on April 1. What It Means Subaru Three-row electric SUVs were rare until recently. In the non-luxury segment, the only options were the Kia EV9 and Hyundai Ioniq 9. But the new Toyota Highlander and Subaru’s new entry—assuming it’s a three-row model—will significantly bolster the choices in this category. Mercedes-AMG and Mercedes-Maybach SL Roadsters Spied with Fresh New Looks
Since the all-new Mercedes-Benz CLA debuted with an updated design language a year ago, several new Mercs have been spied testing with revised styling, including the CLE coupe and CLE convertible, the GLC crossover, and the C-Class sedan. At the top of the hierarchy, Mercedes' most extravagant models will also be refreshed, and our spies have caught the 2027 AMG and Maybach versions of the SL-Class undergoing cold-weather testing with updated cosmetics. It's tough to tell from these images, but it appears that there may be a bar running across the middle of the Maybach's grille, and the lower intake areas appear slightly larger. A broadly unchanged interior is not much of a surprise since these development vehicles preview a mid-cycle facelift, not an all-new generation. Therefore, changing the interior's 12.3-inch driver display and adjustable 11.9-inch touchscreen infotainment display for the setup coming to the all-electric AMG GT 4-Door would be too costly. For the record, the upcoming EV will have a full-width curved display made up of a 10.2-inch driver screen and a 14-inch MBUX touchscreen with AI-powered software. Perhaps Mercedes will put updated software in the SL facelifts, but radical changes will only come sometime in the next decade. Kia’s Cheapest EV Yet Starts at Around $31,000
Kia has released pricing for its smallest and most affordable EV in Europe, the EV2, and it looks like a pretty good deal for buyers who are in the market for an urban electric car. In Germany, the first market where the EV2 has gone on sale, the subcompact EV starts at €26,600, which is the equivalent of around $30,800 at the current exchange rate. That’s a good price considering the expected target was €30,000. That said, the upcoming Volkswagen ID. Polo, which is a direct competitor, is expected to start around €25,000 (approximately $29,000). A Lot of Electric Car for $31,000 Kia So what do German customers get for the equivalent of $30,800? The price is for the Kia EV2 in base Light trim, which features the standard 42.2-kWh battery pack that enables a range of up to 317 km (197 miles) in the WLTP cycle. Standard features include 16-inch steel wheels with wheel covers, all-round parking sensors, a backup camera, ‘ccNC Lite’ infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a suite of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). Kia Mind you, the EV2 Light comes exclusively in a four-seat configuration with a fixed rear bench, which is a limitation that not all buyers may like. In addition, the base Kia EV2 will take some time to reach dealerships (about half a year), as the Korean automaker will prioritize shipping more expensive variants first. “The first models to be delivered, starting in April, will be the Air and Earth versions with the standard battery. From July, all versions with the larger battery, including the top-tier GT-Line, will follow, with the base Light version available from October,” Kia Germany said in a statement (via Electrive). Bigger Battery on Higher Trims Unlocks 281-Mile Range Kia Above the EV2 Light, Kia offers the Air, Earth and GT-Line trims, each of which can be had as a four- or five-seater and a choice of two battery packs—the standard 42.2-kWh pack or the optional 61-kwh pack, which offers a WLTP driving range of up to 453 km (281 miles). The cheapest model with the big battery is the EV2 Air that starts at €33,490 (around $38,800), which is a big step up from the standard Light trim with the smaller battery. The Air trim adds standard features such as 16-inch alloys, power folding side mirrors, power windows, a better sound system, automatic climate control and a battery heater, which comes in handy when charging in cold weather. Kia The Earth and GT-Line trims add even more features like two individual rear seats for the 4-seat version and an array of comfort and convenience features. For example, the Earth trim features a power adjustable driver’s seat, heated front seats, heated steering wheel, height-adjustable passenger seat, inductive smartphone charging pad, and head-insulated glazing. All these features come with a downside, though: due to the added weight, the driving range is cut to 308 km (191 miles)—the EV2 Earth is only offered with the smaller battery for now. The Most Expensive Variant Tops $42,800 Kia Finally, the range-topping EV2 GT-Line features a sportier-looking design with 19-inch alloy wheels, body-color exterior elements, multifunction sports steering wheel, privacy glass, automatically extending door handles, and artificial leather upholstery. The GT-Line comes exclusively with the bigger battery, but the range is penalized as well due to the added weight—413 km (256 miles). The five-seat model starts at €36,890, or roughly $42,800. The EV2 is based on Hyundai Motor Group’s E-GMP platform as other EVs from the company, but it has a 400-volt architecture to cut costs. Teardown Shows Why This Mercedes Diesel Engine Failed
Not Your Typical Four-CylinderWhile Mercedes-Benz, like most automakers, is now shifting toward downsized, electrified powertrains, the German marque introduced the 2.1-liter turbodiesel OM651 diesel engine almost two decades ago – an engine often described as “overbuilt.” The diesel engine has received mixed reviews when it comes to reliability, with some critics pointing to issues such as timing chain wear and oil leaks, particularly in higher-mileage examples. The OM651 had a relatively limited presence in the U.S., but thanks to Eric from I Do Cars, this failed example was torn down to show the kinds of issues it could develop. Based on the date codes and part numbers, it was believed to have come from a 2015 GLK 250 BlueTEC 4MATIC, which produced around 200 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. The engine weighs roughly 400 pounds, which is relatively heavy for a four-cylinder and made the teardown a bit more challenging. Digging Deeper Without AlarmAfter components such as the EGR valve and twin-turbo setup were removed, the engine had not shown any obvious signs of major issues. Like the turbos used in most diesel engines, the bi-turbo system was designed less for outright performance and more for improving low-end torque. As a result, it is generally less prone to issues than gas-engine turbos, which are typically exposed to higher heat and greater boost-related stress. However, Eric spotted “forbidden glitter” inside the oil filter housing, suggesting that some internal components may have experienced wear and shed metal shavings. Even so, the valvetrain and timing system did not appear to have any major issues. For context, Mercedes recalled certain 2014–2015 GLK 250 BlueTEC models over a timing chain tensioner gasket issue that also prompted a stop-sale order, so the clean condition of this engine’s timing setup was still reassuring. I Do Cars/YouTube When Metal Meets MetalThe most serious issue found was that one of the pistons had struck the cylinder head, which also appeared to have damaged the bearings. That same piston showed significant discoloration, suggesting it had been subjected to extreme friction and heat. Copper-colored rod bearing material was also found in the oil pan, further pointing to bearing damage. Despite the problems seen in this example, Eric concluded that the OM651 didn’t exhibit any clear inherent weak points. It likely suffered from an oiling-related issue, but overall, the engine was considered well-engineered and generally reliable. The OM651 was succeeded by the OM654, but diesel engines are essentially absent from Mercedes-Benz’s U.S. passenger-car lineup. In the broader market, diesels are now mostly limited to heavy-duty pickups and full-size SUVs like the Ford F-Series Super Duty. For buyers still wanting a diesel vehicle with a three-pointed star logo, the Sprinter remains available with both standard- and high-output versions. Up to 1 in 4 EV Chargers Don’t Work. One Company Wants to Change That
Automakers have made some big improvements in EV range over the last several years, even while dropping prices, with a number of $30,000 models coming to market in the next few years. But there’s another big hurdle the industry needs to overcome before many potential buyers will be ready to plug in. Kia And that’s where a start-up called Ionna hopes to shake things up. Based in Durham, North Carolina and just marking its second anniversary, the company is rapidly rolling out what’s set to become a nationwide network of 30,000 charger bays. But that addresses just one of the roadblocks to widespread EV adoption, Ionna CEO Seth Cutler said during an exclusive interview with Autoblog. A critical goal is to keep its chargers running at all times, no easy task considering the industry up-time averages barely 70%, resulting in EV owners facing the prospect of being stranded. Ionna is also determined to make the “charging experience” quicker, more secure and even a bit more fun, said Cutler. Backed by 8 Automakers Since you’ll likely ask, “Ionna” is a classically geeky name, short for Ion North America, the codename early planners came up with when seven automakers decided not to wait for more familiar brands like EVgo, Electrify America and Shell Recharge to address the issue of public charging. Initially, BMW, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz and Stellantis kicked in cash, Toyota signing on, as well, shortly after Ionna was officially launched in March 2024. The plan called for the start-up to put “at least” 30,000 DC quick chargers in the ground by 2030. With stations typically offering 10 to a dozen bays each, that would translate into as many as 3,000 individual locations, roughly equal to the current Tesla Supercharger network in the U.S. The 100th Ionna facility opened this month and the company expects to be operating in “the majority of states” by the end of the decade, said Cutler, but for Alaska, Hawaii, Montana and the Dakotas – though they could follow later. UnpluggedIt’s one thing to have a readily accessible network of chargers. It’s another to keep them running, as most EV owners can attest to. At any given moment, at least one in six EV chargers is out of service, according to a recent report by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. Other studies have the figure closer to one in four - though the J.D. Power EV Experience Study released last month did find modest improvements in reliability. Getty The possibility that an EV owner might not be able to get a charge, even if they can find a place to plug in, “creates angst from a consumer standpoint,” said Cutler. Consumers don’t want to be thinking “Am I going to get stranded?” They also want to be sure that the charger provides the promised amount of current. All too often, stations claim they can provide 350 kW but, once plugged in, that falls down to 150, 100, even 50 kW – which means substantially longer charging sessions. Related: Tesla Leads JD Power EV Satisfaction Study as Honda Falls to Bottom Ionna aims to deliver the dependability owners of gas vehicles expect at the pump. “Our uptime is 99.5%” at the first 97 sites that went live,” he reported. Just as importantly, added Cutler, when there is an issue, the company has set up methods to make sure it’s immediately identified, with technicians quickly dispatched to get the problem resolved. In the DarkEven when motorists can find a working charger that doesn’t mean they enjoy the experience of plugging in. All too often, charging companies have opted for low cost, out of the way locations with little in the way of lighting and no protection from the elements. Studies show women, in particular, concerned about security when plugging in. But even when they’re placed in better locations, EV chargers typically don’t offer the same level of convenience as a conventional service stations. And that creates an opportunity not only to improve the experience but also generate more revenue, said Cutler. I spoke to Cutler at the Kia plant in West Point, Georgia, where we recently attended the production launch of the automaker’s new Telluride Hybrid. One of Ionna’s first stations was set up on a factory outlot, right at an I-85 interchange. It’s one of Ionna’s mid-range facilities, well-lit and offering a canopy over its six charger bays – three with CCS-style plugs, the others using Tesla-style NACS plugs. CCS-style plugs and which use the Tesla-style NACS plugs. “Recharge” stations offer restrooms, accessible by using QR codes, and vending machines. It'll be live this year.” The station will feature 22 separate charging bays – not quite a Bucky’s, but larger than almost any existing public EV charging facility. It will offer the sort of convenience store amenities common at today’s gas stations, but the 1,000-square-foot facility will also feature a driver’s lounge, as well as outdoor seating. Considering today’s typical EVs may plug in for anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour, Cutler expects this to make for a much more relaxed charging experience – and to generate additional revenue, as gas station operators long ago discovered. A third group of Ionna stations will operate in partnerships with the likes of WaWa and Sheetz, existing service station operators who may already have amenities in place where they’ll add Ionna chargers. Boosting Demand Ionna is “constantly evaluating” its plans, said Cutler – not surprise considering how much different the battery-electric vehicle market is today compared with how things were expected to shake out two years ago under an EV-friendly president. Since returning to office in January 2025, Pres. Donald Trump has reversed course and, most notably, federal EV tax credits were phased out in September, sending sales into a downward spiral. But with the War in Iran sending fuel prices soaring, dealers report a renewed surge in interest in battery power. Cutler is confident that an improved charging experience also will help buoy demand. “We know sales for EVs are not going to go to zero in 2026 or ’27,” said Cutler. “In fact, costs are coming down, performance going up. You probably (will) see a dip this year. But I think there will be a second wave” to follow later in the decade where EVs regain momentum, he added. Ionna’s current plans call for the start-up to focus on urban areas where sales and ownership levels are highest, as well as on the Interstate network connecting those cities. Longer-term? The Ionna network could start fleshing out in more rural area and possibly even expand into Canada. “It’s a very popular question,” said Cutler, adding that “It’s something we’re evaluating, though it won’t be this year.” View the full article
