The Nissan Altima Has a Very Different Reputation Outside the U.S.
An Iffy ImageTo say that the Nissan Altima doesn't have a stellar image is an understatement, especially for the fourth and fifth-generation models. Admittedly, it's not entirely the car's fault, as certain, er, people with a particular driving style haven't done the Altima's reputation any favors. Reliability hasn't been great, though it's hard to tell whether it's mainly due to a lack of maintenance or the cars were genuinely faulty. Outside of America, however, Nissan's midsize sedan has a far more respectable standing. Most folks reading this article might find it hard to believe, but the Altima was positioned in a totally different way in Asia that, in many ways, helped it avoid the iffy image it suffers from stateside. Nissan Bluebird RootsBefore the Altima, there was the Stanza, but both cars were called the Bluebird back home in Japan. It came from a long line of models dating back to 1955, including the much-loved and iconic Datsun 510. The first-generation Altima was essentially a renamed tenth-generation (!) Bluebird. The first Altima was a solid, dependable, reliable midsize sedan, but we wouldn't exactly call it a soul-stirring ride. However, the Japanese Bluebird had a spicy model dubbed the SSS-Limited ATTESA. It was powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine (the SR20DET, for those who are curious) and produced 207 hp and 202 lb-ft of torque, which were strong figures for the early '90s. It was equipped with a similar all-wheel-drive system to the contemporary Skyline GT-R and was even available with a manual transmission. Even the non-turbocharged models were marketed with a bit of sporting edge. The Japanese-market Bluebird had a smaller engine than the American Altima, but the 2.0-liter was more willing to rev than the 2.4-liter, not to mention lighter, too. It wasn't all sporty, though, as there were also lower trims with 1.8-liter and 1.6-liter engines, and even a diesel option. It's also worth noting that most markets outside Japan had adopted the Altima name by then. Nissan Going Separate WaysThe eleventh-generation Bluebird would lend itself to what eventually became the second-generation Altima. Unlike the first Altima, however, the Bluebird platform used for the new model was tweaked to better serve the American market, and the two models looked nothing alike. The Bluebird was then succeeded by the Teana, which also replaced the Cefiro (aka Infiniti I30/I35) in 2002. The first Teana and third-generation Altima were more closely related, with different exterior and interior designs but similar dimensions. The next generation of both models followed the same script, and the two cars wouldn't be renamed versions of each other until 2014. Same Car, Different ReputationCome 2014, the Teana and Altima were twins, effectively turning the latter into a true global model once again. Both cars had the same specs and even shared the same chassis code (L33), but whereas the American Altima was pitched as a reasonably-priced midsize sedan, it was marketed as a junior executive sedan everywhere else. In Japan, it was aimed at senior management types who wanted a comfortable cruiser with no sporting intentions. Dubbed the Teana over there, it was described as a car that offered 'a luxurious travel experience' and 'hospitality,' along with constant mentions of relaxation and comfort. And whereas Altima marketing frequently used figures and features, the Japanese Teana was presented in a way that made you think you were buying a motorized La-Z-Boy. With that, Teana buyers were typically older folks who took pride in ownership and valued their purchase. Granted, it wasn't a huge seller in Japan, but the ones you see there are in remarkable condition. For the most part, they're driven gently, have led quiet lives, and are even considered generally reliable. The most common complaint we saw about it in Japan was more to do with its size and the interior materials used. Getting a used Teana from the same era as the fifth-gen Altima is something worth exploring in Japan. Strange, but true. Nissan The Altima and Teana TodayAlas, midsize sedans today are a threatened species, regardless of market. The Teana is no more in Japan, and the Altima came close to being axed. As far as we can tell, only North America, the Middle East, and China get the Nissan midsize sedan. In America, the Altima still faces an uphill battle in cleaning up the reputation that the internet has given (or cursed) it. The Autopian did a neat little piece surrounding the stereotypes that deeply affected the nameplate, and it's well worth a read, too. If anything, the Altima's neutral reputation outside the U.S. shows that one market doesn't truly define a model's legacy. Case in point: previous-gen Altimas have proven fairly robust in the Middle East, even with the CVT. The current ones seem to be holding up well there, too. As for China, its Teana is a very different animal from America's Altima. It has a totally different face and is chock-full of features and tech that wouldn't look out of place in something that wears a prestige badge. It's positioned as a luxury sedan and appointed accordingly, showing that there's still something left to offer in the current Altima platform. Toyota’s Driving Data Lawsuit Just Took a Major Turn
Behind Closed DoorsA report from Car Complaints provides an update on the lawsuit accusing Toyota of illegal data sharing. A federal judge has sent the case to arbitration after determining that plaintiff Philip Siefke had agreed to resolve disputes through arbitration. Siefke, who owns a 2021 RAV4, discovered that Toyota had been collecting his data after learning he already had a comprehensive driving profile while applying for insurance. He then filed a class action lawsuit against Toyota, the insurer Progressive, and the data firm Connected Analytic Services (CAS), alleging violations of the Federal Wiretap Act, the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, and invasion-of-privacy laws. The suit alleges Toyota illegally collected, sold, and shared drivers’ behavioral data from vehicles dating back to the 2018 model year. Toyota In the Fine PrintThe arbitration clause is embedded in Toyota’s terms of use, and the automaker argues that disputes over driving data must be handled through arbitration. Toyota also said it gathers data only from customers who consent to its Connected Services agreement. However, the case underscores the scope of Toyota’s Connected Services, which offer features such as remote vehicle controls, navigation, and in-car connectivity. Under the system described in court, customers who decline to share their data cannot access these connected features. While that arrangement may seem off-putting to some, Judge Amos Louis Mazzant noted that customers have the choice to enroll in Connected Services – and consent to data sharing—or decline them altogether. The judge referenced the terms agreed to by the plaintiff, which state: “By continuing, you agree to Toyota’s handling of vehicle data according to the Connected Services Terms of Use and Connected Services Privacy Notice. The terms 'Connected Services Terms of Use' and 'Connected Services Privacy Notice' are in red, boldface text, and they provide a hyperlink sending the User to digital copies of Toyota’s Terms of Use and Privacy Notice.” Toyota The Data DilemmaThe court also granted the motions to compel arbitration filed by Progressive Insurance and Connected Analytic Services. As connected services become increasingly common in modern vehicles, concerns over data privacy are also growing. These concerns have also influenced U.S. restrictions on China-linked connected-vehicle technology, driven in part by national-security and data-security fears. The adoption of advanced technologies, such as autonomous driving systems, will require vehicles to collect large volumes of data to operate effectively. As such, it will be important to see how regulators balance innovation, safety, and privacy protections. Toyota View the 3 images of this gallery on the original article View the full article

Toyota’s Best-Selling SUV Just Lost an Inch
The Toyota RAV4 has become America’s best-selling vehicle by doing the basics right. It is efficient, inexpensive to maintain, and spacious enough for everyday life. Part of its appeal – all SUVs in fact – is also its ride height and the illusion of off-road readiness. Yet that's exactly what Japanese performance parts manufacturer Tanabe has just done, releasing a new set of lowering springs for the latest-generation model less than 4 months after it reached showrooms. A Lower Stance Without the Harsh RideLowering usually brings sharper handling and cleaner looks, but often at the cost of comfort. Tanabe has taken a different approach with its new spring kit, aiming for a modest drop while keeping ride quality close to stock. The Sustec NF210 springs lower the 2026 Toyota RAV4 by 23 mm (0.9 inches) and use a spring identical to the stock system, helping the suspension stay compliant over daily roads. Because these are cold-formed springs, they're designed to resist sagging over time, which should keep the ride consistent long-term. Aftermarket Brands Are Moving Faster Than EverWhat stands out most is how quickly Tanabe developed, manufactered and brought these springs to market. The newest RAV4 went on sale in October 2025, yet the Sustec NF210 is already available, and all four coil springs have three special coatings on them to improve longevity. Admittedly, Tanabe is no stranger to lowering RAV4s either, having offered lowering springs to the previous RAV4, as well. To many, the idea of lowering an SUV or a crossover might still sound foreign, but it's a growing trend. For instance, HKS recently introduced a Hipermax S lowering kit for the Hyundai Ioniq 5 with the same goal of improving agility without sacrificing ride quality. Some Mods Don't Have To Make SenseLowering your SUV or crossover makes no sense to most people. In fact, many would consider it counterintuitive, especially in a market where lifted builds are the norm. But for owners who never plan to leave the pavement, a cleaner stance can be more appealing than extra ground clearance. And we embrace modifying your car for your needs – just as long as you don't delete your suspension. With pricing around 61,600 yen ($402) for a full set, Tanabe’s new springs offer a relatively affordable way to make your RAV4 stand out. You don't have to drive a boring daily driver. Subaru Is Asking Owners If They Want a Manual SUV Back
An Enthusiast's BrandSubaru is known for its dependability, ruggedness, and capability. All of these were honed over the years as the brand competed in the Rallying scene, where it was even dominant. That relationship with racing showed that it's an enthusiasts' brand through and through. Times have, of course, changed, but Subaru has been one of the few automakers that has tried to stick to its core beliefs as much as possible. A recent survey circulating among US owners is generating significant excitement within the enthusiast community. Related: Subaru Hints at Pickup Comeback After 20 Years Reddit/Macgyver452 Stick Shift SUVReddit is a platform where content goes viral quickly, and Redditor Macgyver452 posted a screenshot of the survey in question. It was even posted on the Subaru subreddit, their community. The post's photos show the Subaru logo and the question, "Would you consider buying a manual transmission SUV in the future?" What follows is a litany of choices to answer the question, ranging from Definitely Not to Definitely. We think we know which option the Subaru owners are likely to choose. Surveys are generally private matters, not just sent to the public; in this case, only a select few owners received the survey prompt via email. Also, no indication was given which model would receive the treatment, but based on the current lineup, everything appears to be a candidate except the EV Solterra. If we were to hazard a guess, though, we could narrow down the possibilities to the models that have a Wilderness variant like the Crosstrek, Forester, or Outback. Given that the Wilderness line is for hardcore enthusiasts, the manual transmission makes the most sense here, as opposed to the highway cruising Ascent or the more tame variants of the aforementioned three models. Subaru Hoping On The TrendFor reference, the last Subaru to offer a manual was the 2023 Crosstrek; the Forester lost it after 2018, and the Outback went fully automatic after 2015. At the time, it seemed the days of manuals were numbered, and we all played our small violins as we saw brand after brand cut down on third pedal shifting. Recently, though, the enthusiast market has picked up, with multiple marques reinstating manuals on their performance models. We've seen the numbers increase over time. In 2025, there were still around 32 models offering a manual, but the vast majority were performance cars. Granted, the numbers don't lie – the average percentages of manual car sales in the US fluctuate from 1% - 2% annually. Profits for these models won't be volume-driven, but Subaru will be doing itself a huge favor branding-wise if they actually do it. Subaru View the full article

Nissan’s Most Popular SUV Is Facing a Trust Crisis Around The World
A Dangerous Pattern Nobody Can FixA woman in Sydney claims Nissan can't help her because her 2019 X-Trail (also known as the Rogue in America) loses power when she's driving alone or with her kids. Despite repeated visits to the dealership, technicians have been unable to duplicate the shutdowns. After learning that a previously identified "kill code" affects her CVT automatic transmission, she fears her car may be unsafe to drive. Her case mirrors those filed by thousands of other Nissan customers worldwide, including in the US. In addition to numerous complaints about electrical issues with Rogues over the last few years, the NHTSA has logged an increase in complaints about the model line due to recalls affecting engines, transmissions, and electrical systems across all model years. Brandon Turkus View the 1 images of this gallery on the original article Dealerships Cannot Find the Ghost In The MachineSimilar to the Sydney case, many American Rogue owners report that their vehicles fail when driven normally but pass all dealership testing procedures. When technicians inspect the vehicles with the ignition off, they may not have any trouble codes stored electronically, nor do they find any obvious areas of concern. Many common causes of intermittent failures appear to be failures of the crankshaft position sensor, camshaft position sensor, or throttle position sensor. All three sensors can fail without triggering a warning light, making diagnosis more difficult. Many technicians recommend replacing both the crankshaft and camshaft position sensors simultaneously because it is extremely difficult to determine which sensor is failing. Additionally, some owners have found that correcting an electrical ground issue can restore normal operation. Still, other owners have had success with replacing batteries. Cole Attisha Nissan’s Recall Gone RogueNissan issued a major recall affecting about 443,899 vehicles in the U.S., including 2021–2024 Rogues, due to possible defects in variable-compression turbo engine bearings that could cause engine damage or failure. The recall followed a formal NHTSA engine failure investigation that documented 1,878 incidents across multiple Nissan and Infiniti models, some of which resulted in crashes or fires. Nissan’s ongoing recall will inspect engines for debris in the oil pan, repair or replace parts as needed, and in some cases extend warranties up to 120,000 miles. But not all shutdown complaints fall squarely within the current recall criteria, leaving some owners without a clear fix, even when they are experiencing serious safety impacts on highways. The pattern suggests a systemic issue Nissan has yet to adequately address, leaving owners questioning whether their cars are trustworthy enough for school runs and daily commutes. Volvo’s Most Popular EV Looks Meaner Than Ever With New Black Edition
A Dark TwistVolvo’s smallest electric vehicle, the EX30, recorded the strongest sales among the brand’s EV lineup in the U.S. last year, with 5,409 units sold, according to data compiled by Cox Automotive. Now, the Swedish marque has introduced a new Black Edition that could appeal to buyers drawn to murdered-out styling. This Black Edition is finished in Onyx Black across virtually the entire exterior, including the front Volvo badge and rear script, which are typically finished in chrome. It rides on 19-inch five-spoke alloy wheels, paired with black brake calipers to maintain the fully blacked-out theme. Volvo claims that this paint “sparkles in daylight while reduced light accentuates its elegance.” The automaker also noted that the deep blue Indigo interior features studio-inspired textile materials and upcycled denim trim exclusive to the Black Edition. Volvo Volvo’s Growing Dark PortfolioLong-time fans may recall that this isn’t the first time Volvo has rolled out a Black Edition. The darkened treatment is now available across six models: the XC90, XC60, XC40, EX40, EC40, and EX30. Several of these have already reached the U.S., so it wouldn’t be surprising to see the EX30 Black Edition follow – especially given its status as the brand’s best-selling EV stateside. For now, however, it is offered exclusively in the U.K. in two configurations: Single Motor Extended Range and Twin Motor Performance. Its starting price is £40,060, or around $54,000 in current exchange rates, positioning it between the base model and the off-road-oriented Cross Country trim. In the U.S., the EX30 starts at $40,345, including destination, while the Cross Country variant begins at $49,545. That suggests the Black Edition would likely slot somewhere between those two price points. Volvo All Black EverythingThe press release did not indicate whether Volvo plans to expand the new styling package to other markets. However, Rob Deane, Commercial Operations Director at Volvo Car UK, said: “The Black Edition variants of our models have struck a chord with buyers in the past, and the EX30 looks really striking with the design additions, giving it even more presence. We are really pleased to offer the Black Edition of our compact premium SUV to customers in the UK.” It’s worth noting that Volvo's plant in Belgium produces the EX30 for several markets, including the U.S. and the UK. The EX30 was initially built in China before Volvo shifted production to Belgium to avoid U.S. tariffs on Chinese-made EVs. China Moves to Ban Yoke Steering Wheels After Cracking Down on Flush Door Handles
Back to BasicsPreviously, China announced a ban on flush-style door handles popularized by Tesla electric vehicles. Now, a report from Autohome says regulators are essentially telling automakers, “Don’t reinvent the wheel,” as the country also moves to ban yoke-style steering wheels – another design feature made famous by Tesla. China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has published a draft outlining a new standard aimed at preventing injuries caused by steering mechanisms. The proposal introduces updated test procedures requiring impact testing at multiple specific points along the steering wheel rim – points that yoke-style or half-wheel designs do not have. Autoblog The Safety CaseThe draft standard also states that yoke-style steering wheels may allow a driver’s body to move past the rim and toward the dashboard in a crash. It further notes that airbags in such designs may deploy less predictably compared to those integrated into traditional circular steering wheels, which also provide a larger surface area for cushioning when the driver moves forward. According to the report, 46 percent of driver injuries are linked to steering mechanisms. Among the earliest mainstream production models to adopt a yoke-style steering wheel were the now-discontinued Tesla Model S and Model X, which later offered it as a $1,000 option. The design is even more central to the Cybertruck, which features a steer-by-wire system that reduces the need for multiple full turns – making a traditional circular steering wheel less necessary. The Lexus RZ also offers a yoke in certain markets, though that configuration is not available in the U.S. Tesla The Regulatory DominoUnlike the ban on flush-style door handles, a prohibition on yoke-style steering wheels may not be as widely felt, given that the design remains relatively niche. The configuration already faces several hurdles, with many automakers hesitant to adopt it. However, because China is the world’s largest car market, a ban on yoke-style steering wheels could still influence manufacturers that are considering the design for future models. The new standard will officially take effect on January 1, 2027, the same date as the new rules governing flush-style door handles. Regulators will also provide a 13-month transition period for vehicles with a half-wheel design that have already been approved and are currently on sale. These 4 states are paying the most for gas today - here’s why
With slowing inflation being credited, in part, to lower gas prices, it can seem as though the price you pay at the pump has never been lower. For many states, that’s somewhat true. Gas prices in several Midwest and southern states have dropped dramatically in the past few months; while not at record lows (we still remember when gas in the Midwest was around $0.65 per gallon), gas is noticeably cheaper in February 2026. Some states don’t have it so good. Out west, gas prices remain high, and while there are plenty of good reasons gas is typically costlier on the West Coast, this February feels almost punitive compared to some other areas of the country. Gas prices across the United States are experiencing a typical seasonal push higher. Some refineries perform routine maintenance this time of year, and the transition to summer-blend gasoline requires additional refining. The national average for a gallon of regular fuel is approximately $2.94, up slightly from January. It remains notably lower than the February 2025 average of $3.15. Bloomberg/Getty Images HawaiiHawaii gets an honorable mention here because it’s expensive, but pricing isn’t anomalous. Hawaii ranks as the second most expensive state, with a current average of $4.40 for regular unleaded. The state’s pricing is primarily dictated by its geographical isolation; because Hawaii lacks a pipeline infrastructure, nearly all fuel must be shipped across the ocean, incurring high logistical costs. The market is also highly sensitive to global crude oil fluctuations, as local refining capacity is limited compared to the mainland. Related: Why gas is suddenly 25 cents cheaper in these 6 cities CaliforniaCalifornia consistently ranks as the most expensive state for gasoline on the mainland, and February 2026 is no exception. With state averages hovering around $4.50 per gallon, it’s largely “average” for California in February. San Francisco and Los Angeles are the most expensive regions, with a per-gallon price tag of $4.70 and $4.66, respectively. The reasons for these prices are largely structural. California imposes the highest state gas taxes in the nation (roughly 60 cents per gallon) and requires a special low-emissions fuel blend that is costlier to refine. Recent refinery closures have also tightened supply. Still, current prices are down from last year, when San Luis Obispo saw average prices of $4.85. Compared to the national average of $2.94, Californians are paying a premium of over $1.50 per gallon. For relief, drivers are looking to independent stations in rural areas, where prices can dip as low as $3.29. WashingtonAt the most northern point on the West Coast, Washington State is feeling the heat, particularly in the Seattle area. Regular gas in Seattle is currently averaging $3.93 per gallon, making it one of the priciest metro areas in the country outside of California. While high, this price per gallon is a slight reprieve from February 2025, when the average was $4.06 per gallon. Washington's high prices are largely a ripple effect of California’s supply chain issues. Because the West Coast relies on a somewhat isolated energy network that is heavily dependent on California refineries, disruptions or high demand in California drive up costs for its northern neighbors. Additionally, crude oil prices hovering around $60 per barrel have prevented the typical winter price drop. At nearly $4.00 per gallon, Washington drivers are paying roughly a dollar more than the national average. The "cheapest" gas is hard to find in the metro hubs, but prices tend to soften as you move east of the Cascades away from the I-5 corridor. Shell NevadaNevada also appears on this list because of its reliance on California’s infrastructure. Las Vegas is currently seeing prices around $3.42 per gallon. While this is down from $3.92 at this time last year, it remains significantly higher than the national average. The state’s high pricing is driven by logistics rather than local policy. Nevada lacks its own refining capacity and relies on pipelines from California. Las Vegas, with its robust highway connections to Southern California, often mirrors the pricing trends of its neighbor. While $3.42 is high compared to the sub-$3.00-per-gallon pricing in nearby states like Nebraska, it’s a noticeable drop from the $ 4.00-per-gallon average this time last year. EV Registrations Slip for the First Time in a Decade as Growth Stalls
With federal tax credits no longer available, U.S. demand for battery-electric vehicles has tumbled for the first time in a decade. Registrations slipped by 0.4% in 2025, according to a new report by S&P Global Mobility, in sharp contrast to the rapid growth during the earlier part of the decade. As recently as 2021, year-over-year demand grew by as much as 88%. The market should begin to stabilize this year, “as more EVs come out and the infrastructure continues to grow,” said Stephanie Brinley, S&P’s principle automotive analyst. “There is an opportunity for growth,” she added, though it’s far from certain a rebound will begin this year. Boom to BustU.S. consumer demand for EVs grew rapidly during the first part of the decade, rising nearly eightfold between 2019 and 2024. In 2021, the pace of year-over-year growth reached 88%, though that dropped to 11% in 2024, reported S&P. Cadillac Last year, however, registrations fell into the negative column for the first time since the consultancy began tracking the EV market in 2016. All told, 1.3 million battery-electric vehicles were registered in 2025, a 7.8% share of the market’s overall 16.25 million vehicles. (By contrast, total registrations were up 2.2%, reaching the highest total since COVID struck in 2020.) Related: Trump EPA Eliminates Obama-Era Vehicle Emissions Standards The downturn in the EV market coincides with the return of Donald Trump to the White House. In contrast to his predecessor, Joe Biden, Trump has taken an actively anti-EV position, among other things ordering chargers removed from federal property. Some are in legal limbo, the administration facing lawsuits meant to undo a block on funding for public chargers. The big hit, however, was the Congressionally approved phase-out of EV tax credits as of September 30, 2025. The Big DisconnectThe year actually started out on a good note, with a 4.6% increase in EV registrations – S&P tracking registrations, rather than sales, because Tesla and some other companies don’t break out sales by individual markets. If anything, the third quarter brought the sort of surge in demand seen earlier in the decade, though that was triggered by the decision by Congress to phase out EV tax credits on September 30. There was significant “pull-ahead,” noted Brinley, many buyers racing to take advantage of those federal incentives rather than waiting until later in the year or even 2026 to buy an EV. The crash came in October and there’s no sign, yet, that the EV market has hit bottom. “We do expect that EVs will find a non-incentivized natural demand. But that will take until the middle of the year,” she said, stressing that this might translate into a “rebound,” but simply the point at which sales start to level out again. Tumbling Tesla Surprisingly, a few automakers have bucked the downturn, including Lucid, Maserati and Cadillac. All three brands focus on high-line products, most of which didn’t qualify for tax credits, anyway. Caddy, in particular, benefited from the launch of two new models last year – the automaker now having five EVs in its portfolio, starting with the $54,000 Optiq and topping out with the $340,000, largely hand-built Celestiq. All told, 50,065 new Cadillacs were registered in the U.S. in 2025, a 73% year-over-year increase. More importantly, it maintained positive momentum after the tax credit phase-out, said S&P, the numbers rising 12% in December. Related: 2026 Cadillac Celestiq Now Costs More Than Rolls-Royce Spectre On the flip side, the big loser last year was Tesla, which saw U.S. registrations dip 6.8% for the year and 35% in December. Tesla faced challenges in virtually every market, from Beijing to Boston to Berlin, worldwide sales falling to 1.64 million in 2025. Its market share dropped 3.1 percentage points to 44.9%. Meanwhile, it lost its long-standing crown as global king-of-the-EV-hill to BYD, the Chinese maker selling 2.2 million EVs last year, even without a presence in the American market. “Tesla was the largest and had the most to fall,” said Brinley. It also had the oldest product line-up and suffered several big misses. Demand for the much-maligned Cybertruck fell by half, even as the long-awaited refresh of the Model Y, it’s top-selling product line – failed to generate the anticipated enthusiasm. Unplugged Performance Related: Tesla U.S. Sales Fall for Fourth Straight Month in January What Now?The big question is whether EV sales in the U.S. can recover. There’s still plenty of momentum abroad, especially in China, and that country’s low-cost EV exports are picking up traction in Europe, Latin America and plenty of other markets. Several factors will come into play. “As more EVs come out and the infrastructure continues to grow there is an opportunity for growth” to resume, said Brinley. David Paul Morris/Bloomberg via Getty Images There’ll actually be fewer new EVs in the near-term than once forecast. Mazda is delaying its home-grown EV by two years. Nissan is not only delaying planned models but has pulled the Ariya off the market for at least one year, allowing it to focus on the third-generation Leaf. Volkswagen has likewise halted sales of the Buzz microbus until 2027. And Ford not only canceled plans for a 3-row SUV but halted production of the F-150 Lightning in December. And the massive Blue Oval City project near Memphis now will produce gas models, rather all-electric trucks. But Ford isn’t walking away from the EV segment, just changing strategy. It will bring out a new generation of compact models, the first “Universal EV,” a Maverick-sized pickup, due out in 2027. Significantly, Toyota, long an EV skeptic, has three new models coming to market over the coming year, starting with the bZ Woodland and C-HR, then following with the Highlander EV that debuted this past week. The Japanese giants EV partner, Subaru, will launch two more all-electric models of its own, this year. Ford There’s a general consensus that U.S. battery-electric sales will bottom out sometime this year and then start to regain momentum. Both S&P Mobility and AutoPacific, Inc. anticipate things will look brighter by decade’s end – agreeing on a 2030 target of 12% market share. That would be welcome news to manufacturers who have been investing tens of billions of dollars into the segment – Ford CEO Jim Farley last week anticipating his company will finally get its EV program into the black by 2029. But it’s anyone’s guess if or when battery cars will come close to the sort of market share, roughly half, targeted by the Biden administration. View the full article

The Forgotten Mitsubishi Ralliart Sedan America Never Got — And You Can Import It Soon
That Time Mitsubishi Made a Flagship SedanIt's a distant memory now, but Mitsubishi one had a very robust lineup of sedans and many other interesting cars. The Mirage and later Lancer models took care of the budget spectrum, while the Galant battled with the Camry and Accord. But even higher up was the Diamante which was meant to go up against the likes of the Acura Legend and Lexus ES300. It was a luxury car without the luxury badge. Ultimately though, it wasn't a huge seller. Perhaps its the said lack of a premium badge that worked against it in the end. Sales never went over 30,000 per year and typically saw figures below 20,000 annually. Towards the end of its life, sales trickled in the thousands. For a lauded and esteemed model that won Japan Car of the Year in 1990, it sure went out with a whimper in 2005. Mitsubishi Much More Loved in Australia and New ZealandMeanwhile, in Australia and New Zealand, the Diamante saw much more success although the Australian version had a different name. Over there, it was dubbed the Magna, and it started out as a stretched Galant in the '80s. Come the '90s, it was unified with the global Diamante, but the Magna had far more trims and engine choices than European and North American models. New Zealand, on the other hand, used the Diamante name all throughout the vehicle's production run. Of course, it also helped that the Magna and Diamante was built in Australia. In fact, by the second generation model (1996), export-market Diamantes would come from there, making it one of the few Australian-built cars to ever make it stateside. Oh, and if you owned a first-generation Diamante wagon, that also came from Down Under. The Magna and Diamante were built to compete against the Ford Falcon and Holden Commodore. While it never threatened the dominance of those Australian icons, it was far more popular in Oceania than the rest of the world. Mitsubishi Building a Spicier ImageOne look at the Diamante and Magna, and sporty is probably the last thing anyone would describe it. While a lovable and competent long drive cruiser, it wasn't exactly a thrill-a-minute car. And whereas the Falcon and Commodore had hot versions, the Mitsubishi didn't. That all changed in 2001 when Mitsubishi rolled out the Magna Ralliart Concept. It was made to celebrate the brand's success in the World Rally Championship and complemented the Lancer Evolution at the time. Think of this then as a gentleman's Evo. However, the looks were far from, we, gentlemanly. It featured a ground-hugging body kit and a rear wing that also doubles as a picnic table. While specs of the concept were never revealed, it was said to have used a supercharged 3.5-liter V6 and all-wheel drive. Mitsubishi They Actually Built the ThingBuoyed by the positive reception from the concept, Mitsubishi Motors Australia went ahead and made the production version of the Magna Ralliart. At the time, the company said it will be a limited-run model and was sold from 2002 to 2003. Over in New Zealand, the same car was called the Diamante Ralliart. Sadly, some of the concept's highlights didn't make it to showroom models. Its 3.5-liter V6 was naturally-aspirated, and the car was front-wheel drive only. The latter is a bit of a shame as the senior-manager-spec Magna was available with all-wheel drive in the first place. At least there were actual tweaks to the powertrain, drivetrain, and chassis to give it a much sportier edge. The V6 originally made 210 hp and 231 lb-ft of torque. The Ralliart bumped those figures up to 241 hp and 245 lb-ft which was respectable figures for its time. It also benefitted from a couple of handling upgrades that included lowered suspension with firmer dampers from Koni, larger brakes, a new power steering pump, and lighter wheels shod in Pirelli P6000 tires. Five-speed automatic versions came with trace control that simulated a limited-slip differential, but the manuals (also a five-speed) came with a proper mechanical LSD. Mitsubishi An Oddball Collector's ItemThe Magna Ralliart was an extremely rare car with just 500 built throughout its short life. Even fewer of those were badged as Diamantes, which is said to be around just 100 out of the total made. Most were sold with an automatic transmission with about 370 sold, while the manual saw just 130 customers. In this case, the manual is the one to go for...obviously. Its looks aren't to everyone's tastes, and with 241 hp going to the front wheels, torque steer is guaranteed. Still, it's an interesting piece of automotive history and has all the potential for being a conversation piece in a Cars and Coffee or Radwood meet. For anyone interested in bringing them to America, the Magna and Diamante Ralliart will be eligible to import next year. Major Winter Storm Alert: 60-MPH Winds, 8-Feet of Snow, and What Drivers Must Know Before Hitting the Road
Winter’s Wild Flip Is Catching Drivers Off GuardWinter's weather map has completely flipped for American roadways, and State Highway Departments and motorists alike are now caught off guard. Areas that typically see inches of snow are now digging themselves out of feet of snow, while typical winter zone areas are bare. As a result, there are thousands of stranded motorists, hundreds of accidents, and hazardous travel conditions that local infrastructure is unable to keep up with. States in the South clearly experience an infrastructure deficit. Since Southern states maintain many fewer plows and salt trucks per capita than Northern states, moderate amounts of snow can severely impact road travel in these states. Also, secondary roads and overpasses (which normally freeze before major interstates) typically remain icy longer than the major highways when they have reopened. Transportation officials in multiple states are continuing to urge motorists to postpone non-essential travel until advisories expire. Winter storm warnings are in effect from February 15 to February 18, with winds reaching as high as 60mph, a real danger to unprepared motorists, with the possibility of tree damage also thrown in. An estimated eight feet of snowfall is expected to be dumped in the next four days across high elevation areas, with lower elevations receiving up to 20 inches of snow. What Drivers Need Before Hitting Snow-Covered RoadsBeing prepared makes a world of difference in terms of whether you experience an inconvenience or a crisis in severe weather. Before you venture out: Carry blankets and warm clothesStock up on non-perishable food and waterMake sure you have power banks or car phone chargersSecure a basic flashlight and a first-aid kitCheck the Department of Transportation site for your state and the National Weather Service prior to driving for the latest advisory information; the weather can change dramatically in just a few miles. When on the road: Travel at a much slower speed than normal when entering a ramp or bridgeTurn on your headlights anytime your visibility becomes less than idealConsider treating dark or malfunctioning traffic signals as a 4-way stopKeep enough space between yourself and the vehicle in front of you. Stopping distances greatly increase due to snow and ice. California Mountain Roadways Expect More Snow and Chain ControlWhile most of the western United States experienced below-average snowpack through much of the winter season, new storms are altering that trend. The Sierra Nevada mountains are expected to see multiple feet of fresh snow, which increases the risk of whiteout conditions along major routes, including Interstate 80 over Donner Pass and Highway 50. AAA Chain control is currently being enforced during the heaviest snowfalls. Standard passenger vehicles must use chains under R-2 restriction, while four-wheel drive vehicles must have snow-rated tires on all four wheels. In addition, speed limit restrictions will likely be reduced to 25-30mph in these chain-restricted areas, and these restrictions will be strictly enforced. Vigilance, preparation, and flexibility are the key elements to stay safe on the road. If the lanes are marked by snow and the rain turns to ice, the best place for your car to be is safely parked in your driveway. View the full article

Some 2025–2026 Chevy Equinox and GMC Terrain Models Can Get Stuck in First Gear
Stuck in LowGeneral Motors is addressing a transmission issue affecting certain 2025–2026 Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain models. According to a Preliminary Information (PI) service bulletin (PIP6100), vehicles equipped with the 8-speed automatic transmission may become stuck in first gear. Getting stuck in first gear can significantly limit vehicle speed and may result in high engine RPMs and pronounced jerking, since first gear typically delivers the most torque. The report states that the issue may occur when the transmission temperature is below 20 degrees Celsius (68 degrees Fahrenheit) and after shifting from Reverse to Drive. It is reportedly caused by the Selectable One-Way Clutch Housing being interpreted as locked, which prevents the transmission from shifting out of first gear. GMC Which Models Are Affected? The 8-speed automatic (8T45) is used in all-wheel-drive (AWD) versions of the Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain. Meanwhile, front-wheel-drive (FWD) models are equipped with a continuously variable transmission (CVT), which does not use conventional fixed gears. Vehicles fitted with the CVT are not affected by the first-gear lockup issue. This issue has been communicated to service dealers only and has not been sent to vehicle owners, as would typically occur with a formal recall. GM engineers are reportedly still working to identify a permanent remedy. In the meantime, drivers dealing with the issue are being told to lift off the throttle, which should allow the transmission to shift into second gear automatically. Trouble in the DataThe 8T45 was introduced with the latest-generation Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain for the 2025 model year. The latest transmission concern comes after Consumer Reports’ 2026 findings ranked the two GM models as the least reliable in the compact crossover segment. The publication cited transmission-related problems, including issues with the transmission control module and severe fluid leaks that, in some cases, required complete transmission removal. In a recent and separate Preliminary Information Service Bulletin (PIP6101), GM is addressing an engine noise issue affecting the Buick Enclave, as well as the GMC Acadia, Canyon, and Sierra 1500. The condition is described as a “top-end ticking noise” and has been reported in models equipped with GM’s L3B 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder or the LK0 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine.
