  1. For the briefest of moments, Tony Stewart is back in NASCAR, and it sounded like he never left. The three-time Cup Series champion is returning to the Craftsman Truck Series in a one-off appearance at Daytona International Speedway to commemorate the return of RAM and he was in rare form indeed. 'Smoke' ribbed the media and scoffed at NASCAR officials who earned his scorn since his departure ...Keep readingView the full article
  2. The Autoblog spy photographers are being kept very busy as automakers across the pond put their upcoming vehicles through grueling winter tests, and their latest sighting shows that the fifth-generation L460 Range Rover is finally getting an update. The luxury SUV has been around since 2022, and ahead of the facelift's launch (expected for the 2027 model year), the Range Rover's latest iteration will be adorned with a new look for the front end. Subtle revisions are also expected at the rear, but what piques our interest most is the cabin; camouflage has also been applied inside the development vehicle, indicating that a refresh of the Range Rover's interior will coincide with the introduction of a new-look face. 2027 Range Rover Updates Will Be Subtle but Significant SH Proshots/Autoblog View the 3 images of this gallery on the original article Camouflage over the entire vehicle, including cladding on the bumpers, indicates that the front and rear fascias will be altered somewhat, and the fact that the upper grille between the headlights has been made to look like the current Range Rover confirms that JLR is hiding a significant change. The lower front fascia will get new intake vents, and it appears that the existing intake holes will be enlarged. As for the headlights, these will retain a notch that intrudes into the center grille, but the uppermost "eyebrow" looks as if it will no longer stretch into the fender. Related: Is This the New Range Rover Sport SVR? Aggressive Prototype Caught Testing at the Nürburgring At the rear, the changes are even more subtle, with the current model's vertically-oriented taillights maintained for the facelift. However, tape on the horizontal crossbar that connects these lights suggests a subtle change. Our best guess is that the RANGE ROVER script will now be illuminated, a design choice that makes particular sense as the first Range Rover EV approaches. 2027 Range Rover to Get Revised Interior SH Proshots/Autoblog View the 3 images of this gallery on the original article Although the windows on this prototype are not tinted, seeing inside is tricky in these hastily shot images. Despite that, the front view shows plenty of fabric camouflage over the dashboard, which means that the screens will be seeing changes, with an updated driver information display and a revised center touchscreen. As in the Range Rover Sport, very few buttons exist on the current interface, and given the backlash many automakers have seen from a button-free layout, it's entirely possible that JLR will give its bread-and-butter SUV a more tactile means of engaging with the media setup. As for powertrains, this facelift is unlikely to bring any significant changes, with the range-topping variants still to be powered by a 4.4-liter BMW-designed V8. We'll know more as the camouflage comes off, and a reveal should take place before the year is out. View the full article
  3. High prices may influence a sales dip, experts warn.According to a new report published in the Los Angeles Times, auto industry experts warn that the issue of affordability will be a significant factor affecting new car sales, as high price tags of new vehicles deter middle-income buyers away from new-vehicle purchases. During a December press call attended by the publication, Charlie Chesbrough, a senior economist at auto industry researcher Cox Automotive, warned that "a lack of momentum heading into [2026]" during the final three months of 2025 may have slowed total sales for the year from an expected 16 million vehicles to just 15.6 million. Cox expects this trend to continue, as they forecast just 15.8 million vehicles to sell in 2026; if realized, it would be the industry’s first annual drop since 2022. Eric Thayer/Bloomberg via Getty Images Haves and Have-nots.Experts at Cox state that the main culprit behind this pushback is growing economic inequality, as uncertainty among consumers with annual incomes less than $150,000 has made a mark on sales figures. They found that new-car sales among households with annual incomes over $150,000 have increased by a whopping 45% since 2019. Over the same period, sales dropped by 7% among families with incomes between $75,000 and $150,000, while they’ve plunged by 30% during the same period among those earning $75,000 or less. The latest figures from Cox and Kelley Blue Book show that the average transaction price (ATP) of a new car in the U.S. hovered at $49,814 in November, the latest data available. Not only does it reflect a 1.3% year-over-year increase, but it is a statistic heavily influenced by buying patterns "from affluent households;" an observation that Cox executive analyst Erin Keating made ntoe of. “The people who can still afford new vehicles are buying what they want: larger premium vehicles,” Keating said. “Everyone else, they didn’t downgrade to a compact car, they left the new market entirely, buying either used or hanging onto what they’ve got.” Justin Sullivan/Getty Images Year-end sales are a mixed bag for various automakersDespite the outlook, several automakers this week have posted their 2025 year-end U.S. sales figures, including Japanese automotive juggernaut Toyota, which reported gains of 8.1% driven by its hybrids and electrified vehicles. Sales at rival Honda increased by 0.5% and marked the brand’s best showing since 2021, while sales at Nissan saw a 0.2% increase despite a 3.7% fall during Q4 2025. On the other hand, Subaru experienced a 3.6% sales decrease following a 7.2% decrease in December 2025, while Korean firms Hyundai and Kia achieved a third straight year of record sales with respective gains of 8.4% and 7%. Domestically, General Motors reported a 5.5% U.S. sales increase in 2025, despite facing a 7% decrease during Q4 2025. In addition, Ford announced what it says is its "best annual sales and Q4 performance since 2019," with total sales for the year climbing by 6% in 2025, while Jeep parent Stellantis sales saw a 3.3% sales dip across its transatlantic brand portfolio. On the premium side, General Motors reported that its sales at its Cadillac division increased by 8% in 2025, while Ford reported that Lincoln saw a 2% year-over-year sales increase, despite a 7.4% dip in Q4 2025. At the same time, Lexus reported a 7.1% sales increase in 2025, VW's premium Audi brand saw a 16% year-over-year sales dip alongside a 36% decline in Q4 2025, while Bavarian rivals BMW celebrated a third consecutive year of sales gains. Related: New Edmunds Data Exposes Bitter Reality of New Car Affordability Final ThoughtsIt should be noted that while all this is going on, many buyers who take the leap to get a new vehicle are going to great lengths when it comes to the credit and financial side of things. New data highlighting significant trends in new-car financing from the car-buying authorities at Edmunds reveals that American buyers are spending more each month to finance their new set of wheels. They found that the average monthly payment among American buyers is at the highest levels they ever recorded,at $772 in Q4 2025. To make matters worse, 20.3% of all financed new-vehicle purchases involve monthly payments of $1,000 or more. It is no surprise that buyers would feel intimidated in this kind of market, especially as average vehicles sell for closer to $50,000. However, the affordability challenge should fare well with used car buyers, as Edmunds anticipates more options in the used-car market this year as more cars come off lease. 4. Toyota has been criticized in recent years by EV advocacy groups and EV fans alike for not going all-in on electric vehicles, but the automaker has remained steady in its balanced approach of offering a diverse range of powertrains tailored to customer needs and regional infrastructure. Basically, Toyota chose not to put all its eggs in the same basket, offering gas-powered, hybrid (HEV), plug-in hybrid (PHEV), battery electric (BEV) and fuel cell vehicles (FCEV) at the same time to please all customers in all markets. That’s why it came as a surprise for many that the next-generation Toyota Highlander midsize crossover SUV, one of the brand’s best-selling SUVs in the U.S., is going BEV-only. Yes, there won’t be a hybrid, plug-in hybrid or gas-powered 2027 Highlander; battery electric will be the only choice for customers. Highlander EV Goes For A Gap In The 3-Row Midsize Electric SUV Market Cole Attisha Despite the fact that the EV market is unstable at the moment, Toyota believes it is the right time for such a move as there aren’t that many all-electric three-row midsize crossovers currently on sale, and one of the most popular–the Tesla Model X–is going away by mid-2026. At least that’s the gist of what Toyota Motor North America Group vice president, Dave Christ, recently told Automotive News, without naming any of the 2027 Highlander’s rivals. Come to think about it, the fact that Toyota gave its all-electric crossover SUV the iconic Highlander name suggests that it has a lot of confidence it will be a commercial success. “This is not a niche product. There will be volume. Other [mass-market] brands have been selling EVs in higher volume than us for several years, and we think we felt one of our portfolio holes was not having EV options in the showroom,” Christ told the publication. EV Market Slowdown Does Not Discourage Toyota Cole Attisha This is an interesting statement, especially when looking at Tesla Model X sales, which saw a 34% decline last year to 13,066 units. While it can be argued that Model X sales dropped in part because the vehicle now in its 11th year, the current market conditions clearly aren’t favorable to all-electric models. Last year, the Trump administration ditched the $7,500 EV federal tax credit and rolled back stringent CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) standards, which means that automakers aren't incentivized anymore to launch new EVs. Yet Toyota seems to be unfazed by that. “Yes, [EV sales are] down after the federal incentives went away, but we think that we deserve our fair share of the EV market that’s there, and these four cars will help us do that,” Christ told AN. The four cars he referred to are the 2027 Highlander, the C-HR subcompact crossover, the bZ compact SUV, and the bZ Woodland, essentially a long-wheelbase version of the bZ. The Grand Highlander Is Not Going All-Electric Kristen Brown Mind you, Toyota is not playing Russian roulette with the Highlander nameplate. The current Grand Highlander, which is slightly larger and less expensive than the Highlander, will continue to be available with gas and hybrid powertrains. That way, Toyota is ensuring that if the Highlander EV doesn’t end up to be successful, it will still have a strong footing in America’s traditional three-row midsize SUV market with the Grand Highlander. Currently, the Grand Highlander is way more popular than the Highlander with 2025 U.S. sales of 136,801 units (up 90.7%) versus 56,208 units (down 37%). So in the end, taking the Highlander all-electric is a calculated risk rather than a wild bet from Toyota. View the full article
  5. The National Weather Service has issued a series of urgent winter storm warnings across five states today as a severe system brings heavy snow, high winds, and dangerous wind chills to the roadways. Travelers in Colorado, Alaska, Wyoming, New York, and Utah should exercise extreme caution or delay travel as conditions are expected to deteriorate rapidly throughout Thursday. According to the NWS, the system is delivering a combination of heavy accumulation and blowing snow that could create whiteout conditions and make mountain passes impassable. Colorado drivers facing difficult mountain commutesThe Colorado high country is seeing significant accumulation that will complicate travel along the I-70 corridor and secondary routes. Summit County, the Mosquito Range, and Rabbit Ears Pass are forecast to receive an additional 3 to 8 inches of snow by mid-morning. The Park Range could see even higher amounts. The real danger for drivers, however, comes from the wind. Gusts of 35 mph are whipping snow across the northern Front Range and passes like the Gore and Sawatch, significantly reducing visibility. The NWS has explicitly warned that blowing snow could make travel difficult over mountain passes. If you must drive through these areas, ensure your vehicle is equipped with proper winter tires and emergency supplies. Dangerous wind chills in AlaskaIn Alaska, the hazards extend beyond just traction. While the Haines Highway is expected to receive another 8 inches of snow, affecting travel along the Skagway and Klondike routes, temperatures in the northern regions are life-threatening. The Arctic Coast and Brooks Range Passes are seeing wind chills plunge as low as minus 65 degrees Fahrenheit. At these temperatures, mechanical issues can quickly become survival situations. Drivers in these remote areas should be aware that frostbite can occur on exposed skin within five minutes. Wyoming and Utah see heavy accumulationWyoming is currently reporting up to 10 inches of fresh snow across the Sierra Madre and Snowy Range. The NWS has issued warnings that outdoor recreation and travel could become life-threatening for those unprepared for the severe winter conditions. Disorientation is a major risk in these whiteout conditions. In Utah, the totals are even higher. The upper Cottonwoods and high Uinta Mountains are forecast to see up to 15 inches of snow. Areas near Brian Head and the Tushar Range are expected to receive a foot of snow by early Thursday. Traction laws will likely be in effect, and travelers should expect delays on all mountain routes. New York lake effect impacts visibilityWhile snowfall totals are lower in New York than in the West, the impact on visibility is still significant. The eastern Lake Ontario region is seeing up to 4 inches of snow, resulting in snow-covered roads and hazardous driving conditions. Commuters in Wayne, Cayuga, and Cortland counties should anticipate slick surfaces and limited sightlines through the afternoon. We recommend checking local DOT maps and 511 services before heading out in any of the affected regions. View the full article
  6. Answered PrayersA Ram without a Hemi V8 option feels a little odd, doesn't it? Well, enough people had the same sentiments to the point that the company brought it back for the 2026 model year. Thank heavens a manufacturer listened to customer feedback. That move has since rewarded Ram big time. The Hemi has been a hugely popular choice for full-size truck buyers despite the Hurricane's inline-six making more power. When Ram offered V8 power again, buyers lined up, and the company couldn't build them fast enough. Stellantis Meanwhile in CanadaStellantis is prepping a massive booth over at Canada for the upcoming, er, Canadian International Motor Show. For the most part, it will feature debuts of cars already revealed in the U.S. Highlights include the Ram 1500 SRT TRX, the facelifted Jeep Grand Cherokee, and the Jeep Grand Wagoneer REEV. But buried somewhere in the press release was an announcement that might make U.S. customers jealous. While the Hemi V8 is also offered up north, Ram has made it available to even more 1500 trims. That's right, the Canadian Ram 1500 has more V8 options than the U.S. version. The More V8s, the MerrierAt the time of writing, it's not yet available in Ram Canada's configuration, but the announcement is good news nonetheless. Those looking for a basic work truck with an eight-cylinder engine will be glad to know that the Hemi will be offered on the entry-level Tradesman model, which is unavailable stateside. In the U.S., the 1500 Tradesman only comes with six cylinders, either the Pentastar V6 or Hurricane inline-six. The same goes for the trim just above the Tradesman, the Express. That too gets a Hemi option in Canada, while American models only get Pentastar or Hurricane sixes. There's even the Canada-exclusive 1500 Sport. While not a new trim, it's an additional variant for the full-size pickup, and it's also available with a V8. Will U.S. Ram 1500s Get More V8s Soon? There's no official word on that yet, but it will depend on demand. The question now is if it's worth sticking in those Hemis in the lower trims of the 1500. Economies of scale should work in its favor, but now is a good time for Ram to ask its U.S. customers whether they actually want it. At the end of the day, the automotive business is exactly that — a business. It has to make financial sense first before plans go ahead. But given that Ram has underestimated the demand for Hemis in the 1500s, we're optimistic that it'll happen. We're still not getting a 6.4 Hemi single-cab truck, though. 7. S60L Door Latch Defect Prompts New Volvo RecallVolvo is recalling 2,205 units of the U.S.-market S60L after identifying a defect that could allow one or more doors to unlatch while the vehicle is in motion. According to the filing submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the issue stems from door latch components that may not function as intended. Under certain conditions, the latch could fail to remain fully secured, increasing the risk of a door opening unexpectedly. Needless to say, an unsecured door poses an obvious safety hazard. Occupants could be exposed to injury risk, particularly at highway speeds or in the event of a sudden maneuver. The recall remedy involves inspection and replacement of affected door latch components at no cost to owners. While the S60L is a niche, long-wheelbase variant primarily produced in China, the defect adds another entry to Volvo’s expanding recall docket in recent years. Volvo Not Volvo’s First Door-Related RecallThis is not the first time Volvo has addressed door latch concerns. In 2019, the automaker issued a recall covering multiple models after discovering that freezing temperatures could cause door latches to malfunction, potentially preventing doors from closing properly. That campaign affected a far broader range of vehicles and highlighted how environmental conditions could expose latent component vulnerabilities. Volvo has historically taken a proactive stance on recalls. The brand has issued corrective actions addressing issues ranging from minor component deviations to large-scale defects affectinghundreds of thousands of vehicles, including rearview camera systems that later became the subject of litigation. The Swedish automaker’s approach signals a corporate culture that takes compliance and safety exposure seriously, even if it means absorbing short-term reputational hits. Volvo A Safety Leader Under ScrutinyVolvo has long marketed itself as an industry benchmark for occupant protection. From pioneering three-point seatbelts to introducing new restraint and crash-mitigation technologies, the company has built a brand identity around its leadership in safety. Recent innovations have reinforced that narrative, underscoring its continued investment in protective engineering. Yet no manufacturer is immune to defects. Even brands that have spent decades refining safety systems can encounter component failures, supplier inconsistencies, or validation gaps. The S60L recall may be limited in scale, but door integrity is fundamental to crashworthiness and occupant containment. For a company synonymous with safety, such issues inevitably draw scrutiny. The key question now is whether this remains an isolated case – or part of a broader pattern Volvo must decisively contain. Volvo View the full article
  8. In the latest escalation of his ongoing battle with Canada, Pres. Donald Trump said in a social media post he may block the opening of the $4.7 billion Gordie Howe International Bridge linking Detroit to Windsor, Ontario. The nearly completed 1.6-mile span has been long sought by domestic and foreign-owned automakers who complain an older span across the Detroit River can’t handle the constant flow of truck traffic moving autos and auto parts between factories on both sides of the border. In a post on his Truth Social site, Trump said he would block the opening of the Gordie Howe bridge until Canada "treats the United States with the Fairness and Respect that we deserve.” But several reports note that Trump’s sudden involvement in the project came just hours after a meeting between U.S. Commerce Sec. Howard Lutnick and members of the Moroun family which own the Ambassador Bridge the narrow, aging span linking the two cities. Long in the Making A second span across the Detroit River has long been sought by the auto industry which routinely faces delays at the scores of plants that straddle the U.S.-Canadian border in Michigan, Ontario and neighboring states and provinces. The late Sergio Marchionne, former CEO of FiatChrysler Automobiles, became a champion of the project which eventually won strong bipartisan support – despite intense lobbying by the Moroun family. (At one point, they started work on a second span alongside the Ambassador Bridge but were forced to abandon the project.) Related: $500 Million Standoff: Canada Accuses Stellantis of Breaking Its Jeep Deal In an unusual move, and with no funding coming from the American side, the Canadian government agreed to fully fund the bridge – which is named for the legendary Canadian hockey star who was born in Canada but who played for decades for the Detroit Red Wings. The deal still granted Michigan half-ownership with its share of the costs initially to come out of tolls. Work began in 2018 but was delayed due to the pandemic. All but some final details now have been completed and the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority recently said in a statement it is on track for opening the bridge early this year. At least it was until this week. A Relic While there are dozens of land and water crossings between the U.S. and Canada --- including the Blue Water Bridge about an hour north of Detroit and also struggling with heavy truck traffic. According to the U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics, there were as many as 2.9 million crossings between the U.S. and Canada going through Detroit in 2025, with truck traffic running as high as 245,000 a month. The bulk of that was through the Ambassador Bridge. Constructed in 1929, it is unique in that it's the only link between the two countries that is privately owned. And, due to its age, it is in a continuous state of maintenance and repairs which can further restrict the flow of traffic, backers of the Gordie Howe long warned. “For years, Michigan and Detroit have bet on the (new) bridge's opening to usher in a new era of international commerce, border security and tourism,” Axios noted in a story on the new span. Once the unusual funding plan for the new bridge was locked down, support became near-unanimous and bipartisan, backed by both the former and current Michigan governors, Rick Snyder and Gretchen Whitmer respectively. The loudest opposition came from the Moroun family. They spent millions on lobbying and lawsuits and eventually forced a Michigan ballot initiative – which backers of the bridge won handily. They went so far as to try building a second span of their own without permission. They were ordered to halt work and take down the moorings that were constructed. Trump Steps InEven as work has progressed, the Moroun family has sought ways to halt the Gordie Howe project. They’ve suddenly gained an ally with Pres. Trump. Late Monday, he posted on Truth Social that the bridge will not get formal approval to open “until the United States is fully compensated for everything we have given them, and also, importantly, (Canada) treats the United States with the Fairness and Respect that we deserve.” Among other things, he’s demanding more of a stake in bridge tolls and incorrectly demanded an ownership stake for the U.S., even though that is already in place. Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images At first glance, it appeared this was just the latest in an escalating tiff between the two countries that began with the president’s second inauguration in January 2025. He has demanded that Canada join the U.S. as its 51st state. He has also enacted new tariffs on Canadian goods and is threatening further actions. Relations between the two neighbors – which share the longest unguarded border in the world – have grown more fraught over the past year. In one of the odder comments Trump made this week, he again criticized a new trade deal between Canada and China, warning, “the first thing China will do is terminate ALL Ice Hockey being played in Canada, and permanently eliminate The Stanley Cup.” Doing a Big Donor a Favor Yet, reports first published by the New York Times suggest Trump’s sudden involvement has at least a secondary motive. “The billionaire owner of a bridge connecting Michigan with Canada met Howard Lutnick, the U.S. Secretary of Commerce, on Monday hours before President Trump lambasted a competing span, in the latest flashpoint in the deteriorating relationship between the United States and Canada,” the paper reported. That has now been backed by numerous other reports from the U.S. and Canada. The Moroun family has long been active in politics and were reported to be major donors to the Republican Party, including Trump. Exactly How Trump might try to block the Gordie Howe’s opening is unclear though he has several options, including the ability to declare an emergency that would shut down specific border crossings. A brief closure was this week ordered at the airport in El Paso, Texas. Set initially to run for 10 days, the order was lifted hours later. Hoping to defuse the situation, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney told reporters he had a “positive” conversation with Trump. noting the bridge was built with workers and steel from both countries. He said he looks forward to the opening of the span and added the two leaders discussed the various concerns raised by Trump in his social media posts. View the full article
  9. There's good news for owners of 2025 and 2026 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Colorado, and Traverse vehicles after General Motors released a new Preliminary Information Service Bulletin (PIP6101) this month to address an unwanted noise in their engines. The issue has also been plaguing the Buick Enclave and GMC's Acadia, Canyon, and Sierra 1500. These vehicles are powered by either GM's L3B 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder or its LK0 2.5-liter turbo-four, and have been experiencing a ticking noise in their cylinder heads, which the bulletin describes as a "Top End Ticking Noise." The cause of the valvetrain noise has been traced to debris from the manufacturing process. The Problem with GM's Turbocharged Four-Cylinder Engines Chevrolet Manufacturing debris in these engines has been found inside the stationary hydraulic lash adjuster, preventing the adjuster from properly pumping oil. Without proper cooling and lubrication, the lash adjuster becomes "soft," and this creates the ticking noise some owners have experienced. Thus far, the issue is not serious enough to result in a recall, but while straightforward, the fix is not quick. Before any disassembly takes place, the Technical Service Bulletin, or TSB, instructs technicians to verify that the ticking noise in problematic vehicles is indeed emanating from the valvetrain area using "a stethoscope or other methods." If not, a ticking noise from the engine could point to a more serious issue. Related: GM Offers Built-In Apple Music in Exchange for Cutting CarPlay and Android Auto Once the cylinder head is confirmed as the source of the noise, the camshaft carrier must be removed and inspected for soft stationary hydraulic lash adjusters by pushing down on each the followers/rocker arms where they rest on the lash adjusters. This needs to be done on both the intake and exhaust sides of the valvetrain. Both the soft lash adjusters and the rocker arms connected to them must then be replaced with new components, which should put an end to the ticking noise. The TSB doesn't mention any other potential causes of the issue besides manufacturing debris, so once these parts are replaced, the issue should not be repeated, unlike the problem GM has been having with its V8 engine. GM Customers Will Be Covered Chevrolet The affected engines are in relatively new vehicles, so the work will be covered under powertrain warranties. Fortunately, this problem doesn't appear to result in any lasting damage to the valvetrain or cylinder head, and the TSB makes no mention of changing out any other components. But in the meantime, any customers experiencing this ticking noise should avoid high RPM, which could lead to a bigger issue. Since this TSB has only just been released, it'll take some time for customers to know whether the fix has been effective, but it's unlikely that this will turn into a recall. View the full article
  10. Mercedes-Benz revealed its sales and earning numbers for 2025 this morning, and on the surface, things don’t look great for the German giant, which sold 9.2% fewer cars last year than it did in 2024. Coincidentally, 9.2% is also how far its revenue dropped over the same period – it made €132 million (around $157 million) in 2025 compared to €145.5 million (around $173 million) the year before. The factors the company blames for this drop in sales aren’t all that surprising – “global tariffs, foreign exchange headwinds and intense competition in China.” Perhaps predicting a dropoff against that background, Mercedes says these results are “within expectations and guidance,” and it isn’t completely bad news for all segments with what it calls ‘Top-End Vehicles’ accounting for some 15% of all its sales. Car Sales Down, But Luxury and Performance Excel Mercedes-Benz Worldwide, Mercedes sold 1,801,291 passenger cars last year, a drop of over 180,000 from the 1,983,403 it shifted in 2024. Among that was a negligible uptick in sales of all electrified vehicles, including hybrids and EVs – 368,700 in 2025 compared to 367,610 in 2024. Focus in on the pure EVs, though, and the story is one a lot more consistent with the current unsteady demand for electric cars: Mercedes sold 168,823 EVs in 2025, an 8.8% drop from 2024. Much of that drop in the US was likely led by the elimination of the EV tax credit in September, and the subsequent four-month pause of production of four of its EVs for the US – the EQE and EQS sedans and their SUV namesakes. Among the bad news, though, was a strong showing for ‘Top-End’ vehicles – Mercedes’ terminology for the G-Class and S-Class as well as the AMG performance and Maybach luxury models. Despite Merc’s sprawling global model range, these once-niche segments accounted for some 15% of all of its sales in 2025. Vans Struggle Too Mercedes-Benz It was a similar outlook for Mercedes’ van division, with sales of 359,136 in 2025 versus 405,610 in 2024 – an 11.5% drop. Notably, though, its all-electric vans delivered a strong result, with 28,488 vans sold last year over 19,516 the year before – a 46% uptick. Nevertheless, Mercedes says that this result was still slightly above guidance, and that investment in its next-gen van platform is the groundwork for future success. A Busy Year Ahead Mercedes-Benz Despite cost-cutting measures taken in 2025, Mercedes is pushing on with a busy product launch schedule. This year alone we’ve already seen the updated S-Class and the new straight-six GLC 53, replacing the unloved four-cylinder AMG versions of the same model. Expect the C-Class to get a similar treatment before long. We’ll also see AMG’s first standalone EV in the form of the new AMG GT 4-Door, and quite possibly the long-awaited ‘Little G’, a compact SUV bearing boxy styling cues from the full-size G-class. In order to hit its longer-term target of getting sales up above two million cars, Merc says it aims to double down on production efficiency and cost cutting, ending production at the plant in Aguascalientes, Mexico it operates in a joint venture with Nissan and increasing capacity at its factories in Germany and Hungary. Meanwhile, in China, where nearly every European manufacturer has been struggling as the domestic industry expands and matures at a staggering rate, it plans to double down on its local partnerships and create a more China-centric supply chain for models in the market. All in all, it forecasts that the sales and revenue patterns it experienced in 2025 will continue into 2026 – which also happens to mark the 140th anniversary of Carl Benz filing his patent for the car as we know it. 12. American Reverse-Imports Coming Soon to JapanIn a bid to soften trade deficits, Japan's automakers will soon be selling U.S.-built cars on its home soil. Toyota has confirmed the American-made models it will be sending over to Japan, while Honda and Nissan are seriously considering that move. There's nothing confirmed yet from the latter two companies, but Toyota is pretty much locked in. From Toyota, the cars that will be sent there are the Camry, the outgoing Highlander, and, of all things, the Tundra. As for Honda, it's possible that it could sell the Passport and Ridgeline in Japan, and the Passport was actually shown over there during the 2026 Tokyo Auto Salon to gauge interest. As for Nissan, potential candidates are the Murano and Frontier. Toyota But First, They Need a StickerAs some of the cars prepare their trip to Japan, they must first undergo a little change in order to be compliant with Japanese roads. In case you missed the heading above, those cars will need a sticker to be sold. That's it. The report came from Japanese automotive publication Response. That rule was announced by the country's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism. Translated from Japanese: "U.S. cars now required to display stickers indicating safety compliance following tariff agreement." This rule also applies to vehicles already being imported into Japan, such as the Jeep Wrangler and the Cadillac Escalade. Yes, they sell them over there. As for the sticker, the final design hasn't been shown. However, it has been mentioned that it will two-inch star-shaped decal that's made to look like an American flag. How thoughtful. Stellantis Loosened Approval Processes The reason for the sticker isn't just for identification. It's mainly there to signify that the U.S.-built cars do pass safety standards, although the standards it passed are from the U.S. and not Japan. In some ways, it's a 'safe for consumption' label, albeit for cars. It also means that the governing body for the sale of imported cars had loosened restrictions in order to sell U.S.-built cars without the need to make region-specific changes. That's good news for manufacturers as it helps reduce costs in making the car compliant for Japan. Honda Changes are VoluntaryUnlike the U.S., most of the world uses amber indicators and doesn't require side marker reflectors on vehicles. With fewer restrictions, American-made vehicles can be sent over there without having to change the light configuration. However, the Ministry is encouraging automakers to make changes, but only on a voluntary basis. The same could be said for bumper height rules and emissions, as Japan is stricter on the matter. At the very least, we're expecting the headlights to be aimed left instead of right, as the cars will be in a right-hand drive country. Nissan View the full article
  13. For the first time ever, Chinese automaker BYD has overtaken Ford Motor Company in global sales in 2025, edging the U.S. carmaker out by 200,000 vehicles for a total of 4.6 million units sold. This has pushed BYD up to sixth place among the world's largest automakers, while Ford dropped to seventh as its global sales fell by nearly 2% to 4.4 million units, Bloomberg reports. The ranking continues to be dominated by Toyota Motor Corporation, with record global sales of 11.3 million vehicles, followed by Volkswagen Group (just under 9 million units), Hyundai Motor Group (7.2 million), General Motors (approximately 6.2 million), and Stellantis (approximately 5.5 million). Exports Made Up 25% Of BYD's Global Sales Photo by ANDER GILLENEA/AFP via Getty Images Ford U.S. sales rose last year but fell in Europe and particularly China, where domestic manufacturers like BYD, Xiaomi and Geely have gained significant market share from foreign automakers with affordable, tech-savvy EVs. Chinese domestic brands held a 65% market share in 2025 in their home country. While BYD’s performance on the global stage is mostly due to sales in its domestic market, where it was the top-selling automaker with over 3.1 million vehicles sold in 2025, exports were not negligible, accounting for roughly 25% of the company’s total sales. BYD, which is an acronym for “Build Your Dreams,” is also present in markets across Europe, South America and Asia. The automaker exported 1.05 million vehicles in its overseas markets in 2025 and aims to increase that to 1.3 million this year, according to the report. The Chinese company has also established overseas factories in key regions such as Brazil, Thailand, and Hungary, which supply its regional markets of South America, Southeast Asia and Europe. BYD’s result is remarkable considering that the company only sells plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and all-electric vehicles (BEV), which are collectively classified as New Energy Vehicles (NEV) in China. BYD recently overtook Tesla as the world's top EV seller in 2025, with 2.25 million units, 600,000 more than the U.S. EV maker. The Chinese company stopped making and selling pure internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles in March 2022. Ford CEO Calls Chinese Carmakers A “Wild Card” Ford Motor Company BYD’s sales performance proves that Chinese automobile brands are playing an increasingly important role in the global market as they leverage their technological advantages in electrification, production and supply chain management. Speaking during Ford’s fourth-quarter 2025 earnings call that revealed a full-year net loss of $8.2 billion for the company, CEO Jim Farley warned about the impact of China’s auto industry on established car manufacturers worldwide. He called it a “wild card” that all global carmakers must now deal with, according to Nikkei Asia. He noted that China’s combination of heavily subsidized low-cost production and slowing domestic demand will increase the pressure for Chinese automakers to export more vehicles, forcing western companies to fundamentally restructure their costs to remain competitive. On the other side of the Pacific, the secretary-general of the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), Cui Dongshu, told China's Global Times that BYD surpassing Ford for the first time is not surprising. "Chinese EVs are steadily gaining a foothold in the global auto market, thanks to their growing competitiveness in technology, cost effectiveness, and market appeal,” he said. View the full article
  14. The upcoming Ferrari Luce may not be the only high-priced, high-performance EV unveiled this year. New spy shots captured in Sweden reveal that, despite waning interest in the Taycan model line (4,142 units sold in 2025 versus 7,570 in 2024), Porsche is pushing ahead with the development of its electric sedan's most hardcore variant yet. The name has not yet been announced, but this widebody Taycan with significant aero upgrades may fall under the Turbo range, possibly being named the Taycan Turbo GT4 RS. At least, that's what our spies are calling it. Whatever name it adopts, we shouldn't have long to wait before all is revealed. Production Bodywork Appears on Hardcore Porsche Taycan Prototype SH Proshots/Autoblog View the 4 images of this gallery on the original article This prototype appears to be closer to production than any previously sighted test vehicle, with a front bumper that looks almost finished, featuring a pair of canards on each side and a large splitter underneath. On top of the front fenders, we see vents that will help to evacuate air from the wheel wells, improving downforce, and behind the front wheel arches, which are also vented, there's a GT3 RS-like air guide that will help to calm turbulent air flowing down the side of the vehicle at high speed. Similarly, the pumped-up rear arches have cutouts that will help to channel air towards the tail of the car, where a huge diffuser sits under the rear bumper. Atop the trunk is an unmissable wing that may be adjustable. Another noteworthy detail is the braking setup, with huge discs that seem barely able to fit inside the wheels, which are missing their center caps. Clearly, this will be Porsche's most performance-focused EV yet. Why the New Taycan Top Trim May Have a Roll Cage SH Proshots/Autoblog View the 2 images of this gallery on the original article The side rear windows are heavily tinted, but peering through the front and rear windshields, we see diagonal bars that appear to be part of a roll cage. The most aggressive Taycan thus far, the Turbo GT with Weissach Package, already ditches its rear seats to save weight, so it's ossible that this cage will be offered as an option. Last year, our spies captured a similarly aggressive Taycan development mule lapping the Nürbugring with aero covers on its rear wheels, potentially hinting at input from Manthey Racing. Going all-in on the Taycan to extract maximum performance seems to be a matter of pride for Porsche after cheaper, more powerful Chinese EVs have lapped the Nürburging in less time, robbing the German automaker of records it usually owns with ease. 15. Jury Sides With De Tomaso in Showdown With Former CEODe Tomaso Automobili has won a sweeping courtroom victory against its former CEO, Ryan Berris. According to a report from Business Wire, after a unanimous jury verdict in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. Berris filed suit in 2023, alleging he had an oral compensation agreement granting him equity in the revived automaker, along with other benefits, including one of its limited-production supercars. He also accused owner Norman Choi of fraud and misconduct tied to the company’s restructuring and valuation. After a six-day trial, the jury rejected those claims in full. Jurors found Berris held no equity stake and had no contractual entitlement to the compensation he claimed. They also dismissed allegations of fraud and defamation related to his dismissal. In a decisive counterclaim, the jury ruled that Berris breached his fiduciary duties to the company and awarded damages to De Tomaso. The verdict effectively closes a contentious chapter that threatened to overshadow the brand’s revival. Bring-A-Trailer A Historic Marque Interrupted by Legal TurbulenceFounded in 1959, De Tomaso Automobili built its reputation on cross-continental performance icons like the De Tomaso Pantera, a Ford-powered mid-engine coupe sold in U.S. dealerships in the 1970s. Under Choi’s leadership since 2014, the company has been working toward a modern renaissance anchored by heritage design and analog performance. That comeback centers on the De Tomaso P72, a 700-horsepower, supercharged 5.0-liter V8 supercar paired with a six-speed manual. First shown in 2019, the P72 channels 1960s racing DNA into a limited-production halo model. The lawsuit, however, cast uncertainty over the brand during a critical development phase. De Tomaso Clear Runway for the P72With litigation resolved, De Tomaso can now refocus on production. Deliveries of the P72 are expected to begin later this year, marking a significant milestone in the company’s revival plan. It even has a futuristic V12 hypercar being developed. In the boutique supercar segment, credibility is as vital as performance. The unanimous verdict removes reputational headwinds and reassures buyers and stakeholders alike. For a marque built on heritage and high drama, this chapter ends not with scandal, but with legal vindication, and a renewed push to put its latest V8-powered creation on the road. 16. Mass Market AppealIt’s the late 1980s, and Toyota has spent most of the past decade building a reputation around reliability, efficiency, and no-nonsense engineering. Their practical, simple, and durable cars routinely outlasted the European and American competition of the era, and usually with much lower running costs. This made cars like the Corona, Cressida, Corolla and Camry extremely popular among families and commuters who just needed an affordable, no-frills automobile that was built to last. Going PremiumWhile Toyotas were considered the smart and sensible choice, absolutely nobody ever called them fun, exciting, or luxurious. Chairman Eiji Toyoda wished to change this perception and, while the company was churning out practical cars for average consumers, had something special brewing behind the scenes for years — a top-secret project, simply codenamed Circle F. The F stood for Flagship, and it was Toyota’s no-expense-spared crack at creating a flagship luxury sedan to challenge the likes of Mercedes-Benz and reinvent how the world saw Toyota. Finally, in 1989 and with everything in place, it was decided that the time was right to take the conservative Japanese brand upmarket with the launch of a dedicated luxury division. And so Lexus was born, and the world was introduced to the outcome of the Circle F project — the 1989 LS 400, and at its heart, a compact and extremely refined V8 engine. Creating the LS 400The Circle F project was initiated in 1983, when Eiji Toyoda laid out the ambitious mission to take on the European and American brands that dominated the international luxury car market at the time. A massive team of over 4,000 engineers, designers, technicians, and other professionals, led by Chief Engineer Ichiro Suzuki, took on the challenge. The goal: build the world’s finest luxury performance saloon that, while being opulent, comfortable, and imposing, would also be quieter, faster, more fuel efficient, and more aerodynamic than any rival. This demanded a cabin noise level of under 58 dB at 60 mph with a top speed of at least 155 mph, fuel efficiency of 22.5 mpg, and a drag coefficient of no more than 0.29. The team also had to develop an engine from scratch — one that could achieve these top speed, refinement, and economy targets, while preserving Toyota’s reputation for reliability, longevity, and engineering excellence. Toyota Powering a FlagshipCreating an engine for a new flagship is a formidable task, especially for a luxury sedan designed to ferry the rich and powerful in absolute comfort. Rather than a sporty, high-revving powerplant, the job called for a relaxed, unstressed motor that could effortlessly propel the large car forward on a smooth wave of torque with minimal drama, noise, or vibration. After testing various engine layouts, the development team finally settled on a naturally-aspirated, all-aluminium, 4.0-liter quad-cam V8 with a 10:1 compression ratio that made 260 lb-ft of torque and 250 horsepower at a relaxed 5,400 rpm. They called it the 1UZ-FE. Equipped with this engine, the LS 400 was extremely well-received at its launch in late 1998, proving to be faster, quieter, smoother, and more fuel-efficient than the competition. All the hard work over the last six years had finally paid off; Toyota’s new flagship was an instant hit. The 1UZ-FE engine has since risen to legendary status as one of the most reliable engines of all time, regularly crossing 200,000 miles with minimal maintenance, with some examples recording over a million miles without major issues. Inside the Unkillable Engine The secret to the 1UZ-FE’s longevity lies in its ethos; minimising internal stress, vibration, friction, heat, and noise to create one of the smoothest and most refined automobile engines ever built. The robust block features a 90-degree angle between cylinder banks and is topped with two aluminum heads with a total of 32 valves. The aluminum alloy pistons are engineered for minimal thermal expansion, with fine grooves in the skirts to aid lubrication and reduce friction, while connecting rods are forged steel. The crankshaft, also constructed of forged steel, has eight rather than the customary six counterweights for finer balance, while each of the main bearing caps has four vertical bolts holding it in place, with an additional two cross-bolting the cap directly to the block for added rigidity — something that was only ever seen in very high-performance or race engines. In fact, it was revealed in 2007 by the then president of TRD, that the lower-end architecture of the 1UZ-FE was based on the design of a Toyota motorsport engine that ultimately never saw the light of day. While the bottom end of the engine may have had its roots in Toyota’s race projects, and is sturdy enough to handle a lot more power than the motor was making, the heads are another story, with most components designed more for efficiency and midrange torque than outright power. Valves are of average size with a narrow included angle while camshaft profiles are conservative, with mild duration and lift on both intake and exhaust. The engine got a small bump in compression to 10.4:1 in 1995, taking peak horsepower up to 260 and peak torque up to 270 lb-ft, while the incorporation of VVT-i in 1998 again raised output to 290 hp and 300 lb-ft. Tuners DelightThe 1UZ-FE’s relatively unstressed nature, its extremely robust construction, and precise machining tolerances are chiefly responsible for its reputation for reliability and longevity. This, along with the conservative head design, also makes it the ideal candidate for modifications. It didn’t take tuners long to realise that this compact and lightweight V8 had the potential to make massive power, and could easily be swapped into smaller, more nimble cars than the large, unwieldy LS 400. youtube.com/@d4a With a healthy amount of torque delivered in an extremely predictable and linear manner, the 1UZ-FE soon became a favourite among the drifting crowd, who discovered how easy it was to maintain long, smooth powerslides with this motor powering their lightweight, rear-wheel-drive, drift builds. Tuners were soon swapping the 1UZ motor into everything from Toyota GT86s and Subaru BRZs to Mazda Miatas, and even choosing this motor over the traditional 2JZ-GTE straight-six for their Supras. With its extremely overbuilt, race-derived bottom end and restrictive, economy-tuned breathing, the 1UZ-FE also offered enthusiasts a strong base with the potential to make massive power. Just a tuneable, standalone ECU, free-flowing exhaust manifolds, and a cold air intake could bump power up by around 20 to 30 horsepower. Top end modifications such as porting and polishing the heads, altering the valve included angle, installing aggressive camshafts and stiffer valve springs, and replacing the restrictive stock intake with individual throttle bodies greatly free up breathing. While the stock engine had a 6,000 rpm redline, tuned motors were soon revving up to over 8,000 rpm and making over 400 horsepower with stock internals, while still retaining their rock-solid reliability. youtube.com/@hughesracebuilt While the 1UZ-FE could easily make over 400 horsepower by going the naturally-aspirated route, that strong bottom end could also handle large boost pressures without breaking a sweat. Tuners have incorporated turbocharging, supercharging, and even nitrous in their 1UZ builds, pushing power output up to 500 to 700 hp for street builds. Race and drag builds, on the other hand, are a lot more extreme as reliability doesn’t matter, and top tuners have extracted over 2,000 horsepower from completely built 1UZ motors. More Than Just a Car EngineIn the decades since its introduction, the 1UZ-FE has proven to be one of the most versatile V8s Toyota has ever built. Blending refinement, toughness, and adaptability, this engine has gone beyond traditional roles, being certified for use in light aircraft and marine applications, where reliability is critical. It still commands respect after all this time, having inadvertently gone from a quiet flagship engine to a timeless performance icon. View the full article
  17. It’s never a good sign when a company’s financial results draw comparisons with the Great Recession of 2008, but that’s exactly what surfaced from Ford’s latest quarterly earnings. The Q4 2025 earnings were the company’s worst in four years, while the net loss of $8.2 billion for the entire 2025 calendar year is its largest since the 2008 recession, according to FactSet (via CNBC). Perhaps the fourth-quarter net loss of $11.1 billion should be more worrying, though it included $15.5 billion in special charges during the quarter largely related to a previously announced shift from EV plans that Ford estimated to cost a total of $19.5 billion in 2025. Ford Model E EV Unit Lost $4.8 Billion In 2025 Getty As you probably guessed by now, much of the annual loss can be attributed to Ford’s Model E electric vehicle division, which lost $4.8 billion in 2025. EV sales suffered and Ford had to shelve previous electrification plans following the Trump administration’s cancellation of the $7,500 federal EV tax credit last year and the rollback of stringent fuel economy standards that favored EVs. This triggered a repositioning from the automaker, which said it would pivot from full electrification to partial electrification, investing more in producing profitable gas-powered and hybrid vehicles and smaller, more affordable EV models. The company also announced in December a major reduction of its EV plans, which included killing off the F-150 Lightning all-electric pickup and canceling future EV models such as the next-generation F-150 Lightning, a three-row SUV and a next-generation commercial van. U.S. Tariffs, Aluminum Supplier Plant Fire Also Affected Ford’s Bottom Line Ford But the EV slowdown was not the only negative factor for Ford in 2025. The automaker also took a significant hit from U.S. tariffs. CEO Jim Farley said on the earnings call that Ford spent double what it had expected on tariffs in 2025–roughly $2 billion–due to "the unexpected and late year change in tariff credits for auto parts." On top of that, the fire at aluminum supplier Novelis’ plant in Oswego, New York, cost Ford $2 billion during the second half of 2025, Ford chief financial officer Sherry House said. That’s because the disruption affected production of some of Ford’s best-selling, high-margin vehicles, such as the F-150 and F-Series Super Duty trucks, as well as Expedition and Lincoln Navigator SUVs. In total, the disruption resulted in lost production of around 90,000 to 100,000 vehicles. Ford Has Reasons To Be Optimistic For 2026 Bill Pugliano/Getty Images Despite the huge annual net loss as well as the tariff and aluminum plant fire bills, Ford’s quarterly revenue of $45.9 billion ($187.3 billion for the full year) beat analysts’ expectations, and executives said they are forecasting a profit of up to $10 billion this year, reversing the 2025 decline, along with a reduction in losses for the EV business. "Improvements in our industrial system, a robust product roadmap that leverages our core strengths, and a disciplined approach to capital efficiency will drive even stronger results in 2026 and beyond," Ford CFO Sherry House said in a statement. The company delivered "a strong 2025 in a dynamic and often volatile environment," said Ford CEO Jim Farley. "We improved our core business and execution, made significant progress in the areas of the business we control – lowering material and warranty costs and making real progress on quality – and made difficult but critical strategic decisions that set us up for a stronger future," he added. 18. If you’ve driven almost any gas-powered car made in the last 10 years or so, you’ll no doubt have an opinion on automatic start/stop systems, the fuel-saving tech that cuts the engine when the car comes to a stop so it’s not sitting idling at red lights or stop signs. There’s an equally good chance that that opinion isn’t a particularly positive one, with many enthusiasts decrying the tech as annoying and the fuel-saving gains it brings largely unnoticeable. Despite that, nearly every new gas-powered car features the system, but that might not be the case for long, as Lee Zeldin, administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, has teased that the government has something in the works to regulate, or even potentially outright ban, the tech. A Divisive System Automatic start/stop systems are pretty simple – come to a stop, and the car’s engine shuts off automatically, and will only kick back in again once you press the gas pedal or select a gear. It might also start up again after a while stationary to preserve battery life, especially if systems like the AC or heating are running. It’s never been something that’s been legally mandated, but the system’s use has long been incentivized by the EPA, with it included in the 'off-cycle credits' system that awards points for fuel-saving systems that aren't factored in during normal economy testing. Even as the boss of the agency speaks out against the tech, its website still includes the claim that “Start-stop can improve fuel economy by 4%-5%.” It can, however, be an irritating system if not well-calibrated, leaving you sitting at a standstill a moment longer than you expected while you wait for the engine to start again. Some have also raised concerns that the regular stopping and starting of the engine can lead to premature wear and tear. Nearly all cars with the system, though, have an easily-accessible button for switching it off, either full-time or for the current drive cycle. Putting a Stop to Start/Stop?Countless Americans passionately despise the start/stop feature in cars. So many have spoken out against this absurd start-stop-start-stop-start-stop concept. The Trump Admin has heard your calls and the announcement you have been waiting for is coming THIS WEEK. Stay tuned! pic.twitter.com/KDJ3DuFOIS — Lee Zeldin (@epaleezeldin) February 10, 2026 That, it would seem, isn’t enough for the EPA under the Trump administration. Zeldin first spoke out about the system in May last year, taking to X to say that the “EPA approved it, everyone hates it, so we’re fixing it.” It wasn’t clear then what he meant by ‘fixing’ it, and that’s still not the case some months later, but we may at least be a little closer to an answer, as Zeldin has once again posted on the platform to say that “the announcement you’ve been waiting for is coming THIS WEEK.” What that announcement might be is unclear – it could be as extreme as an outright ban on the tech, or perhaps simply making it easier to permanently deactivate or eliminating the current EPA incentives for cars that have it switched on on every startup. It nevertheless still feels strange to hear a government agency explicitly dedicated to protecting the environment speak out against a fuel-saving tech, but given the current administration has made its stance on fuel economy measures pretty clear, we shouldn’t exactly be surprised. 19. Despite producing several new one-offs and innovative creations every year, Rolls-Royce continues to find ways to raise the bar for automotive luxury, and the one-off Phantom Arabesque is yet more evidence of this. Commissioned through the marque's Private Office Dubai, the one-off may appear to have an intricate paint job from afar, but it's actually a showcase for a recently patented laser-engraving technique, and this is its first application. The design is inspired by mashrabiya latticework, as found in traditional Middle Eastern houses, palaces, and courtyards. This design doesn't only appear on the world's first fully laser-engraved Rolls-Royce hood, with the theme continuing throughout the one-of-one Phantom. Laser-Engraved Hood Took Half a Decade to Perfect Rolls-Royce View the 3 images of this gallery on the original article Goodwood says the new engraving technique took its Exterior Surface Centre five years to develop, using numerous methods to experiment and test until the finish was worthy of a Rolls-Royce. The end result is inspired by an Italian pottery design technique called sgraffito (to scratch), wherein the artist scratches through a hard surface's coating to reveal an underlying layer of a different color, thus creating an intricate pattern. Similarly, the hood is first painted in a dark color (Diamond Black), then given several layers of clear coat before a lighter, silver top layer is added. Once cured, the paint is engraved at a depth of just 145-190 microns, exposing the dark bottom layer. A Masterful Interior for the One-Off Phantom Arabesque, But We Can't See It Rolls-Royce View the 4 images of this gallery on the original article Inside, the Gallery (Goodwood's term for a dashboard) gets a custom marquetry artwork made from Blackwood and Black Bolivar wood with the mashrabiya design repeated. An offset clock also appears here, while the rest of the cabin boasts Selby Grey and Black leather upholstery, the latter color used for the seat piping and headrest mashrabiya motifs. The doors get Selby Grey piping with Black contrast stitching and feature Rolls-Royce's signature Starlight illumination. More light appears in the sill treadplates, where a cross-section of the motif on the hood reappears. Sadly, most of these elements have not been included in the images Rolls-Royce has revealed. Still, Phantom Arabesque is a mesmerizing creation that shows there truly are no limits to how a Rolls-Royce can be customized, so long as your pockets are as deep as a Saudi oil well. We look forward to seeing how the next Rolls-Royce commission takes bespoke design to a new level, but this will be tough to beat. View the full article
  20. It’s no secret that Volkswagen’s three-row Atlas is aging a bit. It went into production for the first time in 2017 and has already undergone two facelifts, but the time has come for a new generation of the crossover. VW has previewed the 2027 Atlas at a media event in Canada, and although it wears a colorful camouflage wrap, some of the changes made to this key model are evident in the new images. 2027 Atlas: Familiar Profile, But No Hybrid Yet 2027 Volkswagen Atlas Volkswagen View the 3 images of this gallery on the original article The current Atlas has a boxy, utilitarian look about it that speaks to its practical nature, and the 2027 model has retained this profile. The wrap and decals are designed to make the headlights and taillights look like the older Atlas’, but a VW spokesperson told Automotive News that everything is new besides the roof. It hasn’t changed much in size, as the wheelbase is the same length. We expect the new model to look a lot like the VW Teramont Pro, which is essentially the new Atlas sold in other markets. Based on the MQB Evo platform, the Atlas will use VW’s EA888 Evo5 engine. In the Tiguan, this mill delivers 268 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque; that’s less torque than the 273 lb-ft in the outgoing Atlas, so VW may tune the engine for more power in the larger SUV. No hybrid will be launched initially, but VW will hopefully add one sooner rather than later. Most of the Atlas’ key rivals now have efficient hybrid options as consumers increasingly choose these powertrains over non-hybrids and EVs. The interior will be new too, and we hope VW has done away with the finicky touch-based controls that make operating the current Atlas’ features a chore. Why It Matters V Volkswagen of America had a tough 2025, with sales down 13% relative to 2024. Sales of almost every vehicle were down, including the Atlas. However, the three-row crossover still hit sales of 71,044 units, behind only the Tiguan. This, then, is a crucial product for VW. Added to that, the three-row segment has seen a lot of action in recent months. Hyundai has a new Palisade on sale and the all-new Kia Telluride is hitting showrooms imminently. VW needs a competitive three-row crossover now more than ever if it hopes to keep pace with these impressive rivals—and we haven’t even mentioned segment stalwarts from Toyota and Honda. The new Atlas will be revealed at the New York auto show in April, before sales begin around August or September. View the full article
  21. The Takata airbag saga is one of the largest automotive recalls ever, affecting multiple mainstream brands and millions of vehicles. Since an initial Honda recall in 2008, a staggering 67 million Takata airbags have been recalled. Of those, 6.6 million airbag inflators have been replaced in Stellantis vehicles alone, but the automaker has said this week that around 225,000 affected vehicles remain unrepaired. As a result, Stellantis has warned owners of affected models not to drive their cars until the airbags can be replaced. Here’s everything you need to know about the new “do not drive” warning, impacted models, and the risks involved with the problematic airbags. This can be done on the NHTSA website by using the supplied recall numbers. Customers can also contact their closest dealership or call the Stellantis customer service hotline on 833-585-0144. The defective airbags will be replaced at no cost to customers. What’s Wrong With Takata Airbags? Dodg According to the NHTSA, long-term exposure to heat and humidity can cause defective Takata airbags to explode when deployed. This releases metal shrapnel into the vehicle cabin with excessive force, which can seriously injure or even kill occupants. The NHTSA has confirmed that 28 people have been killed by defective Takata airbags in the United States, with a further 400 having been injured. Older vehicles are more vulnerable, since their original airbags would have been more affected by heat exposure over time. Another high-risk group would be people living in hotter and more humid regions such as Florida, Mississippi, and Texas. However, even if your car is newer and you live in a colder region, the risk of a failing airbag still exists. Related: The FBI Says Illegal Chinese Airbags Have Been Killing More Americans Than Initially Thought Why It Matters Jeep Automakers only issue “do not drive” warnings when the risk to vehicle owners and passengers is especially high. Honda did the same for certain models equipped with these airbags in 2023, saying then that some Takata inflators can fail at rates as high as 50%. We urge all owners of Stellantis vehicles listed above to take the warning seriously and avoid driving your car until the airbags can be inspected and replaced. 22. BMW Alpina Becomes Official BMW Sub-BrandOver three years after BMW first announced the Alpina acquisition, the transition is finally done. Starting in 2026, BMW Alpina will run as its own brand within the BMW Group, much like BMW M, but with a different focus. For years, Alpina worked alongside BMW as a partner, not a division. BMW would build the cars, then send them to Buchloe for Alpina’s signature tuning and upgrades. That setup ended last year, opening the door for BMW to take over development and production completely. BMW says Alpina models will now be built at select BMW plants that meet Alpina’s standards. This is a big shift. Alpina isn’t just a tuning house anymore – it’s officially a BMW brand. BMW Alpina A New Emblem for a New EraThe clearest sign of this change is the new BMW Alpina badge. At first, it looks familiar – the throttle body and crankshaft are still there, both key to Alpina’s history. But the design is cleaner now. The center shield is out, replaced by a round shape that matches the BMW logo. The graphics inside are simpler and sharper. BMW calls the new look refined and modern. The badge uses cleaner lines and fewer colors, with a see-through style that gives it a fresh outline. It’s less flashy and fits in better with BMW’s current design language. One thing stands out: the badge doesn’t use BMW’s latest corporate font, keeping the old Alpina brand's own style. Aside from the badge, BMW says the classic Alpina colors and 20-spoke wheels are staying. Inside, top-grade leather comes standard, and buyers will get more ways to personalize their cars as part of Alpina’s push to modernize. In the US, only a few modern Alpina models have made it over, like the B7, B8 Gran Coupe, and XB7. All of them packed real power, but focused more on comfort and control than raw aggression. BMW Alpina's first new model is expected to be a B7 based on the latest 7 Series, with a new wheel design being teased for now. BMW Alpina What Comes Next for BMW AlpinaWith BMW now building Alpina cars in-house, more models could reach more markets. Smaller options like the B3 or B4 might finally go global. BMW says the brand "will combine exceptional high-speed performance with outstanding levels of comfort, with a focus on long-distance journeys." The big question is how far upmarket BMW will take Alpina. Signs point to Alpina filling the gap between BMW and Rolls-Royce, offering more luxury and exclusivity but still keeping its performance edge. But the Alpina story isn’t over, with Andreas and Florian Bovensiepen, sons of the founder, having started their own brand called Bovensiepen. Its first car is a 600-horsepower BMW M4-based collector’s model with Zagato-penned looks. The family will continue to build high-performance German cars, even though the Alpina name is now part of BMW. In 2026, BMW Alpina won’t just be a tuner anymore. It’s stepping up as a global luxury-performance brand with full factory support. The new badge is simpler, but the goals are bigger than ever.
