  5. In the United States, most vehicles run on gas. Whether they are powered by full internal combustion engines or hybrid powertrains, data show that over 90% of cars sold in the US last year were gas-powered. With EV federal tax credits expiring and fewer fully electric vehicles in production this year, gas prices are critical for most drivers. We dove through the data from dozens of sources to find where gas prices are the lowest right now. While our list of places with the highest gas prices had some surprises, this list focuses on where you can find the cheapest gas right now. We weighed current pricing, year-over-year changes, and how far gas prices have fallen since the beginning of the year. Getty Images Kansas ($2.28 per gallon)Data points squarely to Wichita as the hub for cheap fuel in the Sunflower State, with prices hitting $2.28 per gallon today. Wichita is situated almost perfectly for cheap gas prices. It’s close to Oklahoma, which has some of the lowest gas prices in the US. Wichita sits on main trucking corridors, making it an easy “drop” for tanker truckers. Kansas is also on the ONEOK and Magellan pipeline – another reason gas here is so affordable. Compared with prices in the area, prices have dropped significantly. Year over year, Wichita has seen its gas prices dip 16.3%, the most significant decline of any city in the United States. Oklahoma ($2.29 per gallon)Oddly, Poteau is the standout location here with regular gas priced at $2.29 per gallon (we expected it would be OKC). Like Wichita, Poteau sits on several major trucking routes, so it’s not hard to find for gas delivery tankers - but it’s a curious anomaly nonetheless. Gas prices are down 1.3% this year in Poteau, and 16.4% year over year. Neither is a monumental drop, given Poteau’s historically low gas prices. Year over year, gas is down about 50 cents per gallon, but it’s enough to rank it among the lowest gas prices in the country. Related: These 9 states have the cheapest gas in the United States Arkansas ($2.33 per gallon)In Arkansas, Little Rock has the lowest gas prices, with prices around $2.33 per gallon. Much of the gas refined for the Midwest comes from Oklahoma, Arkansas’s neighbor, and Little Rock is the state’s largest hub, which helps keep gas pricing down. Little Rock also sits near the main ONEOK & Magellan pipelines, which stretch from the Gulf Coast up toward Chicago and through the upper Midwest. In the capital city, gas has dropped 17.7% year over year, down from $2.83 per gallon in February 2025. This year alone, gas in Little Rock is down 1.1%, a slight but noticeable dip from the holiday season. Iowa ($2.39 per gallon)Des Moines comes in at $2.39 per gallon, easily landing on our list. One of the two capital cities on this list, Des Moines is similarly well positioned for routinely low gas prices. It’s settled along the primary pipeline and is one of the “Group 3” states negotiating gas pricing for the Midwest. Central gas pipelines thread through Iowa, and its proximity to major refineries makes delivery advantageous. Since February 2025, gas prices in Des Moines have dipped 19.5%, down from $2.97 per gallon. In 2026, gas prices have dropped 2.8% – the highest 2026 drop on our list by a wide margin. Bloomberg/Getty Images Nebraska ($2.28 per gallon)A touch north of Omaha and Lincoln lies Norfolk, Nebraska, where gas is a budget-friendly $2.28 per gallon. Like the rest, it’s positioned on major pipeline and trucking routes, has refineries within a reasonable distance, and Nebraska is another “Group 3” member state. This year, gas in Norfolk has been relatively staid, dipping only 0.4% in 2026. The reasons it tops this list are that Norfolk has the lowest per-gallon gas price and has the most dramatic year-over-year decline. In February 2025, gas in Norfolk was $3.35 per gallon, meaning its current price ($2.28) is a staggering 31.9% lower than this time last year. 7. Ford Teases Announcement Fordhas teased that its long-awaited affordable electric vehicle will be revealed next Tuesday, February 17, at 11 a.m. EST during a livestream event. The reveal comes at a pivotal time for the U.S. auto market. The average transaction price of a new vehicle has now exceeded $50,000. Higher-priced EVs, trucks, and SUVs have played a major role in pushing that figure upward. Many buyers have found themselves priced out of the new-car market. That context has fueled strong interest in Ford’s announcement. EV adoption continues to grow, but affordability remains a primary concern for mainstream consumers. A lower-cost electric model from a high-volume automaker such as Ford could help broaden access to battery-electric vehicles. The company’s scale and manufacturing footprint position it to compete aggressively on price. It Starts With a TruckFord executives have signaled for months that a new family of affordable EVs is in development. The first product is expected to be a compact electric pickup that is said to cost just $30,000. The strategy reflects continued demand for trucks in the U.S. market, even as buyers seek lower entry prices. A smaller, cost-focused electric truck could serve as a gateway to the broader lineup. Reports indicate that the pickup will not stand alone. Ford is said to be developing additional body styles on the same architecture. Industry speculation points to a possible sedan or compact passenger vehicle aimed at the sub-$40,000 segment. That price bracket has become increasingly rare in today’s EV market. Expanding into multiple segments would allow Ford to spread development costs and reach a wider audience. A "Model T" Moment for EVsThe timing of Ford’s reveal is significant. Hype in simplified, lower-cost EVs has grown as startup brands such as the Slate with their EV truck, promote minimalist electric trucks and utility vehicles. Consumers appear more open to practical, value-oriented products rather than high-performance halo models. A major manufacturer entering this space could validate the concept. Early indications suggest Ford’s approach emphasizes cost efficiency and streamlined engineering. The vehicle is not expected to compete on luxury or extreme performance. Instead, the focus appears to be accessibility and attainable pricing, much like what the Model T did for internal combustion cars of old. In the current market, delivering a truly affordable new EV may be the most compelling feature of all. Cole Attisha Using Midjourney 7.0 & Gemini 2.5 Flash Image View the full article
  8. Roughly a week ago, JLR confirmed that the long-awaited electric Range Rover SUV will arrive this year, and it will be joined by an all-electric Velar replacement. Autoblog's spies have now captured a prototype of this new Velar undergoing cold-weather testing in northern Europe, and unlike the early prototype spotted on the Nürburgring last year, this development mule has ditched attempts to hide an aggressively sloping roofline. The result is something decidedly sporty, and as much as the term "coupe SUV" grates us, this new Velar will be worthy of the description, even though it has more than two doors. Nothing else on the market takes the fastback SUV idea so seriously, but there are still questions to which we don't have the answer. 2027 Range Rover Velar EV May Not Have a Rear Window SH Proshots/Autoblog View the 4 images of this gallery on the original article One of the most striking elements of this swoopy new luxury crossover is the rear end, which is somewhat reminiscent of the Porsche Cayenne Coupe. Unlike the German SUV, however, JLR may opt not to fit a rear window. Since this is still just a prototype, the camouflage on the rear end may be hiding glass, but atop the roof, a conspicuous element between two fins seems to house a large rearview camera. Whether or not one can see out the back in the traditional sense, that camera will be necessary. The base of the tailgate includes a large spoiler with an integrated brake light, and this appears to take up at least a third of the upper tailgate, so seeing what's behind the vehicle without digital assistance will be tricky. This isn't the first time we've been led to believe that JLR is disinterested in a rear windshield, as the mules of the polarizing Jaguar Type 00 concept have also been spotted without a rear window (a concept that has already made its way to production on the Polestar 4). SH Proshots/Autoblog The aggressive roofline will no doubt restrict rear headroom and minimize cargo space. In profile, we also can't help but notice that the front doors look relatively narrow, hampering ingress and egress. Clearly, this is a vehicle more focused on style than practicality. That said, the front end shows a semi-circular shutline that spans from A-pillar to A-pillar, potentially indicating a capacious frunk. Below this, narrow LED headlights will notch the front fascia's grille area, though as an EV, the only opening required for cooling is the lower intake. Pumped-up arches, flush door handles, and a relatively low ride height (compared to a typical Range Rover) will help set the Velar EV further apart, while the dual taillight setup maintains a little tradition. 2027 Velar EV Will Be the First of Its Kind SH Proshots/Autoblog View the 4 images of this gallery on the original article The 2027 Velar will be the first JLR product on the British automaker's new Electric Modular Architecture (EMA), an 800-volt platform expected to deliver well over 300 miles of range per charge. The EMA platform will also underpin the next Evoque crossover EV, but it can also support a plug-in hybrid setup, which the new Velar is expected to offer. Our spies report that this Velar prototype has ports on both sides, but since this one is all-electric, the second port is intended to make charging more convenient, whichever way the vehicle is parked. We'll know more before the year is out, with a reveal due in the summer, and since the camouflage is starting to come off, more updates will be available before long. View the full article
  9. 2026 J.D. Power Most Reliable Vehicles: Every Segment Winner ExplainedThe 2026 J.D. Power U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS) is out. It ranks vehicles based on problems per 100 vehicles (PP100) after three years of ownership, covering key areas such as powertrain performance, infotainment systems, driver assistance tech, and overall build quality. Drawing from real-world feedback from owners of 2023 model-year vehicles, the study provides a practical measure of how cars hold up once the initial ownership glow fades. For shoppers focused on long-term durability, strong resale value, and minimized ownership headaches, these segment winners stand out as the most dependable in their respective classes. Below is a breakdown of each top-ranked model and what likely contributed to its performance on the list. Compact Car: Toyota Corolla Toyota The Corolla remains a durability benchmark in the compact class. Its naturally aspirated engines, CVT refinement, and conservative update cycle minimize complexity. Toyota’s focus on incremental improvements rather than sweeping redesigns has helped the Corolla maintain consistently low problem counts and predictable maintenance costs. Midsize Car: Toyota Camry Toyota The Camry’s continued success reflects its reliable platform and proven powertrain lineup, including both gasoline and hybrid variants. Strong build quality, straightforward ergonomics, and restrained technology integration contribute to fewer reported issues over the three-year ownership window. Compact Premium Car: Lexus IS Lexus The Lexus IS benefits from a well-established rear-wheel-drive architecture and Lexus’ disciplined engineering philosophy. By avoiding excessive feature proliferation and prioritizing refinement over rapid innovation, the IS delivers luxury performance with above-average long-term dependability. Small SUV: Subaru Crosstrek Kristen Brown The Crosstrek’s symmetrical all-wheel-drive system and horizontally opposed engine layout have developed and improved significantly over successive generations. Owners report strong drivetrain durability and solid chassis robustness, key factors in its segment-leading reliability performance. Compact SUV: Chevrolet Equinox Chevrolet The Equinox is one of GM’s volume crossovers, but it hasn’t historically dominated dependability headlines. Compact SUVs are brutally competitive in the U.S., often led by Japanese nameplates. For the Equinox to top the segment indicates meaningful quality control gains and possibly simplified powertrain strategies. Midsize SUV: Nissan Murano Nissan Nissan’s brand reputation in the U.S. has taken hits over the past decade, particularly surrounding CVT reliability concerns. The Murano leading its segment, especially given Nissan’s broader perception challenges might be a strong indicator of Nissan rebound. Upper Midsize SUV (Tie): Buick Enclave / Toyota 4Runner View the 2 images of this gallery on the original article The Buick Enclave leverages GM’s refined V6 architecture and focuses on comfort-oriented family usability, delivering consistent long-term performance. The Toyota 4Runner, in contrast, relies on body-on-frame construction and an extended production lifecycle. Its rugged mechanical simplicity continues to reward buyers prioritizing durability over cutting-edge tech. Small Premium SUV: Lexus UX The UX combines Toyota-derived hybrid engineering with Lexus-level fit and finish. Its electrified system is built on a well-established architecture, reducing complexity-related risk and supporting strong long-term reliability outcomes. Compact Premium SUV: BMW X4 BMW Despite its performance-focused positioning, the BMW X4’s segment win is notable given the brand’s historical reputation for complex electronics and higher ownership costs. Built on solid turbocharged powertrains and a refined modular platform, its strong showing suggests BMW’s drivetrain standardization and improved engineering discipline are translating into measurable reliability gains. Midsize Premium SUV: Lexus GX Lexus The GX pairs traditional ladder-frame construction with luxury appointments, offering a rare combination of rugged durability and upscale refinement. Its long lifecycle and proven V8 powertrain architecture contribute to its strong dependability standing. Upper Midsize Premium SUV: Cadillac XT6 Cadillac The XT6’s segment win suggests Cadillac’s recent quality control improvements and disciplined engineering approach are yielding tangible results. It may not carry the long-standing reliability reputation of Lexus, but this ranking indicates Cadillac is narrowing that gap in measurable, data-backed terms. Midsize Pickup: Toyota Tacoma The Tacoma’s body-on-frame design and conservative mechanical updates underpin its reputation for longevity. Strong resale values and consistent owner satisfaction align with its segment-leading dependability performance. Minivan: Toyota Sienna Kristen Brown Now exclusively hybrid, the Sienna blends fuel efficiency with Toyota’s established reliability record. Its electrified powertrain is based on a tried and tested system, helping maintain low problem rates in family-focused applications. Large Light Duty Pickup: Ram 1500 Stellantis The Ram 1500 leads the full-size light-duty segment, delivering solid owner satisfaction despite demanding usage cycles. Full-size trucks often face intense usage cycles, and Ram in particular hasn’t historically led long-term reliability conversations compared to Toyota or even Ford. That the Ram 1500 tops its category suggests improved build quality and refinement in recent generations. More Issues Now Concern Software and ElectrificationAccording to the J.D. Power report, today’s reliability challenges are increasingly tied to software and premium-level complexity. Premium vehicles averaged 217 PP100, widening the gap over mass market brands, while mobile phone integration, particularly Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, remains the top industry complaint for a third straight year. OTA updates have delivered mixed results, with most owners reporting little to no improvement. Electrified powertrains also post higher problem rates, with PHEVs the most problematic, followed by BEVs and hybrids, while gas-powered vehicles recorded the lowest PP100 score. As vehicles become more software-driven, electronic integration, and not mechanical hardware, is now the primary reliability hurdle, which may help explain why some unexpected models appear on this year’s most dependable list. 10. Tesla has found itself in non-stop legal trouble lately, with safety concerns stacking up both inside its vehicles and across its operations. While many recent lawsuits have focused on drivers and passengers, this latest case shifts attention to the factory floor. Former safety supervisor Craig Thompson is suing Tesla Inc. after allegedly suffering severe injuries when unsecured Cybertruck components fell on him at the company’s Texas facility. 150 Pounds Came Crashing Down Tesla According to the lawsuit, roughly 150 pounds of Cybertruck components slid off a moving transport cart and struck Thompson as he walked through Tesla's Gigafactory in February 2024. Court filings claim the boxes were not strapped down and were visibly unstable. Thompson reportedly tried to warn the driver to slow down, but the driver didn't notice him, and the load shifted before anything could be done. The impact caused a traumatic brain injury along with damage to his shoulder, spine, and knees, leaving him with lasting physical and cognitive limitations. Production Over Protection Justin Sullivan/Getty Images Large operations carry serious risks and require strict safety controls. The suit argues the incident was the result of poor safety protocols inside the plant. Pedestrian walkways were blocked or poorly marked, forcing workers to share space with industrial vehicles. Employees were also expected to yield to transport carts at all times, effectively prioritising production flow over human safety. Tesla now faces accusations of negligence and violations of federal workplace safety rules. Thompson was fired about a month after the incident, with the lawsuit claiming his injuries and reduced capacity played a role in his termination. The Cybertruck’s Safety Spiral First of all, we have to address the irony. When the Cybertruck first hit the roads, everyone was scared of how other vehicles would hold up against the bulletproof, near-7,000-lb tank – German safety inspectors appear to agree. And, of course, there are the infamous finger-jamming instances, too. Now, the Cybertruck harmed another person – without even being built. This factory accident adds to a growing list of concerns tied to Tesla’s safety record. Apart from all the door handle and touchscreen lawsuits, the Model Y just ranked last for reliability among nearly new cars in Germany’s TÜV 2026 report, with 17.3% failing major safety inspections. Add the Cybertruck being a sales flop into the mix, and it seems like Tesla is really going through a tough time right now. View the full article
  11. The fate of Porsche's only mid-engine models, the 718 Cayman and Boxster, seems to be hanging in the balance as the automaker's top brass are said to have met yesterday to decide if the next-gen 718 sports cars, which are supposed to be EV-only, are still going to see the light of day. Two unnamed sources reportedly told The Drive that Porsche's top execs met in Europe on Thursday to decide the fate of the electric sports cars amid an unfavorable EV climate due to a combination of factors including dwindling EV sales, the scrapping of America's EV federal tax credit and the rollback of U.S. emissions regulations that favored EVs, among other things. Related: Porsche May Kill Electric Boxster and Cayman Before They Become a Costly Mistake New CEO Faced With 718 EV Development Delays And Expenses Porsche The news comes after recent reports that Porsche might kill off the electric sports cars due to what has been referred to as "development hell." Earlier this month, Porsche sources told Bloomberg that "development delays and expenses" were hamstringing the project, and the company's new CEO, Michael Leiters, who started on January 1, was forced to take those into account. One of the main problems is the fact that Porsche targeted a sub-4,000-lb curb weight for the all-electric 718 Cayman and Boxster, which is understood to be a real engineering challenge for a production-spec electric sports car carrying a heavy battery pack. But things are potentially more serious than that, as Porsche is rumored to be well behind schedule with the vehicle, with previous reports claiming that the automaker had to pause development due to battery maker Northvolt's bankruptcy. A major sign that Porsche is having second thoughts about the project was the automaker's September 2025 announcement that the next-generation 718 models would continue to offer internal combustion engine power. At the time, Porsche said the gas-powered 718 Cayman and Boxster would sit at the top of the range, implying that they would be positioned above the all-electric versions. Porsche ended production of the current 718 models in October 2025. EV-Only Platform Reportedly A Nightmare To Adapt For ICE Porsche Then came an Autocar report from December 2025 that claimed Porsche engineers were having a really hard time adapting the PPE Sport EV platform (developed specifically for the all-electric 718 models) for internal combustion engines. Apparently, the amount of work needed to reverse-engineer the EV-only platform to receive a mid-mounted gas engine is titanic, especially since the PPE Sport EV platform has no provisions for a gas engine, transmission, fuel tank, and many other components specific to ICE vehicles. And that's just the start of it, as removing the load-bearing battery pack from the platform would significantly affect the structural rigidity of of the entire body shell. Fixing that, plus accommodating the engine and transmission, would require major alterations to the floor, rear bulkhead and rear subframe. With that in mind, it's probably not a big stretch to think that Porsche might decide the 718 is not worth the effort and cancel it altogether–be it EV or ICE. We certainly hope that's not the case, as that would probably be one of Porsche's costliest decisions ever. So far nothing has transpired from the company's top-level meeting, but we'll keep an eye out on this. P View the full article
  12. Lee Zeldin, administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), said earlier this week that the controversial start-stop fuel-saving technology in cars could be eliminated. But, together with President Trump, Zeldin has just announced a far more polarizing and extensive rollback of emission regulations for vehicles in the United States. The Obama-era 2009 Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Endangerment Finding and subsequent federal GHG emission standards have been eliminated. These standards were applicable to 2012 and newer vehicles. Combined with other measures, it’s said to be the single largest deregulatory action in the country’s history. The Full Scope of Trump EPA BMW Trump and Zeldin’s announcement will also do away with off-cycle credits, which includes the start-stop feature. They claim the Endangerment Finding wrongly justified trillions of dollars in regulations, increasing the costs of vehicles for American families and small businesses. The new ruling claims savings for Americans of over $1.3 trillion. “The Endangerment Finding has been the source of 16 years of consumer choice restrictions and trillions of dollars in hidden costs for Americans,” said Administrator Zeldin. “Referred to by some as the ‘Holy Grail’ of the ‘climate change religion,’ the Endangerment Finding is now eliminated. The Trump EPA is strictly following the letter of the law, returning common sense to policy, delivering consumer choice to Americans and advancing the American Dream. As EPA Administrator, I am proud to deliver the single largest deregulatory action in U.S. history on behalf of American taxpayers and consumers. As an added bonus, the off-cycle credit for the almost universally despised start-stop feature on vehicles has been removed.” The EPA’s findings suggest that even if all GHG emissions were to be eliminated from vehicles in the U.S., it would have no material impact on global climate indicators until 2100. By reducing compliance costs and eliminating the Endangerment Finding, average cost savings of $2,400 per vehicle have been claimed by the White House. Related: Car Prices Hit $50,000. Now the U.S. Wants to Ease Emissions Rules Democrats, Former President Obama Push BackToday, the Trump administration repealed the endangerment finding: the ruling that served as the basis for limits on tailpipe emissions and power plant rules. Without it, we’ll be less safe, less healthy and less able to fight climate change — all so the fossil fuel industry can… — Barack Obama (@BarackObama) February 12, 2026 Although Trump claims only good can come of the decision, it’s an opinion not shared by everyone. Keith Wilson, mayor of Portland, was one of the early critics of the decision. “The fact of the matter is that we are already experiencing the impacts of the climate crisis,” said Wilson according to KGW8. “With this ideologically driven decision, the EPA is taking away some of the most important tools we have for regulating emissions, like car and truck emissions standards.” A joint statement released by Wilson and Jessica Vega Pederson, Multnomah County Chair, pointed to science-backed evidence of global warming. One such example was the “heat dome” of 2021, which resulted in almost 100 people in Oregon dying. The duo said such an outcome was “virtually impossible” without human-caused climate change. Former President Barack Obama took to social media site X, saying that without the Endangerment Finding in effect, “we’ll be less safe, less healthy, and less able to fight climate change—all so the fossil fuel industry can make even more money.” Related: The Fed's New Emissions Rules Could Make Cars More Expensive What It Means Stellantis With this change, carmakers can effectively double down on gas power without investing in the expensive emissions technologies that have been required until now. The U.S. is likely to fall even further behind in the EV race. At first glance, this is good news for enthusiasts who love powerful, gas-guzzling sports cars and SUVs, but the longer-term effects are worrying. Not only will the progress made in reducing emissions be reversed, but environmentalists doubt the cost-saving claims for Americans, as they will have to spend more to fuel less efficient vehicles that are more polluting. Peter Zalzal from the Environmental Defense Fund told the BBC that the health impacts from the new ruling could cause 58,000 additional premature deaths. Not all automakers have responded to the news yet, but Ford Motor told CNBC it appreciates that the imbalance between customer choice and current emissions standards has been addressed. EV-only carmakers will surely feel differently. The debate between the opposing camps will surely continue for many months. View the full article
  13. The next generation of Ford’s popular F-Series pickup truck is still a few years away, but the signs suggest a huge technological leap for the best-selling model line in the United States. Specifically, the 2028 F-Series could adopt by-wire technology for steering and braking, which eliminates a mechanical connection between the steering wheel/wheels and brake pedal/brake pads. Instead, a series of sensors, motors, and electronics will replace these conventional components. But why does Ford look like the likeliest brand to take the rugged pickup in this direction? Here’s a deeper look. The Software-Defined Pickup Truck Ford We’ve steadily seen the rise of software-defined vehicles, whereby multiple core features and functions are manipulated by and upgraded through software rather than hardware. Gas-powered trucks are not exactly at the forefront of this change, given their role as work vehicles, towing machines, and off-road toys. But that’s changing, and by-wire technology will form part of this change. According to Richard Truett from Automotive News, planned supercapacitor production from major suppliers and Ford CEO Jim Farley’s own comments on the next-gen F-150 suggest the pickup will be the first of America’s major truck manufacturers to implement by-wire tech. Supercapacitors are small energy devices that deliver high-voltage electricity in short bursts. They can also discharge and recharge quickly, making them suitable for by-wire steering and braking tech. The production timelines from major supercapacitor manufacturers like Clarios, together with Ford pickup production timelines, leads Truett to believe the next F-Series will adopt by-wire steering and braking. ZF, meanwhile, is planning to equip around 700,000 heavy-duty pickups with electric brake calipers over the next few years; Ford is one of the only companies with the truck volumes to justify a rollout of that magnitude. Ford The Tesla Cybertruck already has steer-by-wire technology, and it goes a long way to making the large, heavy EV feel more maneuverable. This same benefit could be seen in the next generation of gas-powered pickups, which still feel quite cumbersome alongside many SUVs. Related: Rivian Taking On Tesla and Lexus With Steer-By-Wire System Ford Is Open To Breakthrough Tech Ford Truett also mentioned the possibility of GM pickups adopting by-wire steering and braking, but believes Ford is a more tech-forward company that doesn’t shy away from advances in the industry. “We’re doubling down on our icons, making the next-generation F-150 and Super Duty absolute breakthroughs in terms of cost, technology, powertrain choice and functional features,” said Ford CEO Jim Farley on February 10 on a sales call with media and analysts. When Ford spokesman Mike Levine was asked about by-wire tech, he said the Blue Oval would not comment on future products—but there was no outright denial, either. Final ThoughtsAlthough unconfirmed by Ford at this stage, the evidence suggests by-wire technology could very well make its way into the next-generation F-Series. Not only will this result in a pickup with fewer parts, but the tech promises shorter stopping distances and more responsive steering, which are traditional pickup weaknesses. The challenge for Ford may be convincing truck loyalists that the tech is as dependable as traditional, mechanical steering and braking systems. We’ve also seen automakers like Lexus tease a steer-by-wire system for the RZ crossover, but it’s still not available in the U.S. Having experienced this steering system myself in an RZ back in 2023, I can confirm its responsiveness could prove game-changing in a heavy pickup, although it does require an adjustment to one's driving style. We expect more information to come to light over the next year or so, but it all points to a technological revolution for the 15th generation of the legendary F-Series. View the full article
  14. Mercedes-Benz Recall Report Flags Fire Risk in Nearly 12,000 EVsMercedes-Benz has issued a safety recall affecting approximately 11,900 EQB electric SUVs in the United States after identifying a potential high-voltage battery fire risk. The recall covers select 2022–2024 EQB 250+, EQB 300 4MATIC, and EQB 350 4MATIC models equipped with battery cells supplied by Farasis Energy. According to the NHTSA filing, certain battery cells may be insufficiently robust at a high state of charge, increasing the risk of an internal short circuit. In rare cases, this could lead to a thermal event and a vehicle fire, whether the vehicle is parked or in operation. Drivers may receive a battery warning while driving, but parked incidents may occur without prior notice. Mercedes-Benz Industry Pattern: EV Battery Defects Under ScrutinyMercedes’ recall adds to a growing list of battery-related safety campaigns across the EV sector. Volvorecently recalled certain 2025 EX30 models due to potential battery overheating, while Hyundai faced significant scrutiny after fire risks linked to improperly secured battery components in some Ioniq 5 vehicles. Notably, this is not Mercedes-Benz’s first battery advisory in recent months. Just last month, the automaker warned certain EQB owners to limit charging to 80 percent pending corrective action. Across brands, the common thread remains battery cell production variability and energy management vulnerabilities, persistent pressure points as EV adoption scales globally. Remedy Plan and What Owners Should ExpectTo resolve the issue, Mercedes-Benz will replace the affected high-voltage battery packs at no cost through its dealer network. Updated battery units are said to incorporate revised production safeguards intended to eliminate the root cause of the defect. Until replacements are completed, owners are advised to limit charging to 80 percent and park vehicles outdoors as a precaution. Formal owner notifications will outline scheduling procedures. While the recall affects a limited portion of Mercedes’ EV portfolio, it underscores the critical importance of battery quality control for long-term electric vehicle safety and consumer confidence. 15. Subaru Pickups: A (Very) Abridged HistorySubaru doesn't have a very long history when it comes to building pickups. They've only ever made two, but it's safe to say that they've been memorable at least in enthusiast circles. We are, of course, talking about the Brat and the Baja. The Brat, also known as the Brumby, was based on the Leone and made from 1978 to 1994, spanning two generations. It was discontinued in America in 1987, but continued elsewhere for seven more years. As for the Baja, it was based on the Outback and had a short run from 2002 to 2006. While neither could really be called a sales success (particularly the Baja), both have built up a dedicated and loyal following over the years. Subaru Pickup Revival Soon? It's been 20 years since Subaru sold a pickup, but it seems that the company is toying with the idea yet again. That's according to Australian publication Carsales, which spoke to Subaru Australia general manager Scott Lawrence. "Ute is a conversation and I can’t share much now, but it’s never a no," said the executive. While it's short of a confirmation, at least we know that Subaru is, indeed, putting pickup plans on the table. The question now is what kind of pickup it has in mind. Compact or Midsize?Lawrence mentioned that there was room for a "monocoque-style ute." With that, there are two ways Subaru can go about this. The company can utilize the Crosstrek body, stretch the wheelbase and rear section, and build a potential rival for the Ford Maverick. The compact pickup market has been overwhelmingly dominated by Ford, with Hyundai throwing in the towel with the Santa Cruz. Perhaps Subaru has a better chance of disrupting that dominance. On the other hand, the company could go for a midsize unibody pickup. It could be based on a modified Outback platform with little in the way of styling changes. Think of it then as a possible competitor for the Honda Ridgeline, and using a midsize SUV as a basis could make it a more practical proposition with wider appeal. As for the name, "Baja" has been floated around but is unconfirmed so far. Toyobaru, Pickup StyleBut let's not forget that Toyota and Subaru still have a partnership. The latter could simply take the easy route by slapping its own badges on the (somewhat) all-new Hilux, do a few tweaks of their own, and call it a day. Besides, Subaru has asked for help from outside when it came to body-on-frame vehicles. Mind you, the last time Subaru did that, it was far from a success. Back in the early '90s, Isuzu lent a helping hand by giving the folks from Gunma its Trooper/Bighorn and badging it as their own. Perhaps it's a little ill-advised to do that again. 17. Genesis may not yet command the vast dealership networks of Germany’s luxury heavyweights, but its latest expansion makes one thing clear: the Korean brand is no longer playing small in the US premium market. With 9 new standalone dealerships opening across the country, Genesis has grown its dedicated retail footprint to 84 locations nationwide, a roughly 12% increase that signals serious long-term ambition. Luxury Underdog Stealing Market Share Genesis BMW still dominates the US with more than 350 dealerships, while Mercedes-Benz operates over 380 locations. Audi, Volvo, and Lexus follow closely behind with 315, 282, and 244 dealers, respectively. By comparison, Genesis remains a fraction of that size, but focusing purely on volume misses the point. While Mercedes-Benz sales dropped by nearly 10%, Genesis had a 10% year-over-year increase in sales figures for 2025, selling more than 80,000 vehicles in the US alone. For a brand that has existed for less than a decade, growth like that is remarkable. The company is also moving further away from its Hyundai roots, with a brand new model being developed entirely in-house. Affordable Brands Are Reshaping The Market Genesis A major driver behind that momentum is Genesis’ pricing strategy. The brand consistently undercuts established luxury rivals while offering comparable technology, refinement, and performance. At the moment, new car prices continue to grow, and buyers are becoming more value-conscious by the day. As a result, buyers want a premium experience without the premium markup, explaining why Genesis' parent company, Hyundai, is selling more cars than ever before. But it doesn't stop with Korean car brands gaining ground. Subaru recently topped Consumer Reports’ 2025 brand rankings, beating Toyota, Honda, BMW, and even Porsche, reinforcing the idea that buyers are prioritising quality and reliability over prestige badges. Building a Luxury Empire One Dealership at a Time Genesis Genesis' offering consistently undercuts German rivals while offering comparable technology, design, and performance. Combined with an increasing number of upperclass dealerships and a concierge-style customer experience, Genesis is positioning itself as a smarter alternative to traditional luxury. Admittedly, Genesis still trails far behind BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Lexus in sheer size, and will most likely for quite some time, but its rapidly expanding retail network and accelerating sales growth suggest something much bigger is taking shape. 18. In celebration of the Jeep brand’s 85th anniversary, the company is continuing its promise of revealing a special-edition Wrangler every month for 12 months. The Twelve 4 Twelve series has now spawned its fourth unique Wrangler—say hello to the 2026 Jeep Wrangler Willys 392. This is the second of the special editions (after the Wrangler Moab 392 revealed in November 2025) to use the muscular 6.4-liter Hemi V8 engine. It’s also a tribute to the original, back-to-basics Willys, and brings the price of the V8-powered Wrangler even lower in the process. Related: Jeep Brings Back The White-Top Wrangler Just In Time For Winter The Most Advanced Off-Road Powertrain In A Willys S This is no old-school Willys under the skin, and it’s a lot more capable than the $44,500 four-door Willys that’s been on sale for a while now. Key to the Willys 392 is its 6.4-liter Hemi V8, which makes 470 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. It ensures there’s always power in reserve over any terrain, and the two-mode dual exhaust system amplifies the sound of the V8. The following off-road gear comes equipped as standard: 35-inch BF Goodrich KO2 tires with 17-inch beadlock-capable wheelsTru-Lok electronic locking rear differentialSelec-Trac full-time transfer caseDana 44 heavy-duty solid front and full-float rear axles (third generation)4.56 axle ratioSteel rear bumperCold air intake hood, including water separatorRock railsWinch capable steel front bumperIt looks good, too. The Willys 392 features special hood decals and heritage 4WD graphics at the back. It debuts a new heritage-inspired color called Goldilocks and looks aggressive on its chunky rubber; those tires, by the way, mean no less than 11.1 inches of ground clearance. Nappa leather seats, an Alpine nine-speaker sound system, and a 12.3-inch touchscreen are included, too. S “Our Wrangler Willys has always represented the purest expression of Jeep capability,” said Bob Broderdorf, Jeep CEO. “Our community has been clear, they want a Wrangler that returns to a more classic, back‑to‑basics formula, paired with the unmistakable power of a V-8. The Wrangler Willys 392 is our answer, building on our commitment to expand V-8 availability across the Wrangler lineup.” Related: Jeep’s 85th Anniversary Wrangler Adds Retro Style Without a Huge Price Tag Why A Cheaper V8 Wrangler Matters S The new Wrangler Willys 392 has a starting price of $69,995, making it a full $10,000 cheaper than the only other V8-powered Wrangler, the Moab 392. While still on the pricey side in the Wrangler trim lineup, it’s now also $10,000 cheaper than the Ford Bronco Raptor, which has a 3.0-liter EcoBoost V6 engine. No other proper off-road SUV has the Willys 392’s combination of dirt-road capabilities and a V8 engine at under $70k. The new Toyota Land Cruiser is cheaper, but relies on a comparatively tame four-cylinder hybrid powertrain. You can get the excellent Lexus GX Overtrail for under $5k more (including a lot more luxury), but its 349-hp V6 doesn’t hold a candle to the Jeep’s Hemi V8. If you want a Defender V8, that’ll cost you way north of $100,000. All of which means that the new Wrangler is one of the best off-road SUV deals around, assuming you don’t care about high gas bills. 19. Mystery Trademark from Mercedes-BenzMercedes-Benz has filed a new trademark for the name Grand Top. While that may not seem like much of a big deal, it offers a glimpse of what the brand has in store for the future. Now, trademarks don't always translate into production, but they're a good indicator of future models nonetheless. The trademark filing was registered with the German Patent and Trademark Office on Feb 8, 2026. The question now is, what could it be? John Beltz Snyder Laundulet, Anyone? It has been suggested that the name, first spotted by CarBuzz, could be applied to an ultra-opulent version of the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class. The current one has yet to get the same changes as the Mercedes-Benz version, but the facelift model has the potential to be given the landaulet treatment. But if Mercedes-Benz is feeling particularly bolder, it could do the same for the Mercedes-Maybach GLS. Besides, if it's over-the-top luxury we're talking about, the company might as well go all-out. On the flipside, no one's really asked for an ultra-luxurious open-top SUV, but Maybach could unlock an odd niche with that. AMG Could Use it TooNow, we're not suggesting that Mercedes-AMG will build an S63 Landaulet, although that would be a bizarre thing to behold. Instead, it's the AMG GT that could be another potential candidate for whatever the brand will use for Grand Top. Yes, there's the GT Roadster, but we're thinking more in the lines of a targa-style model. The GT is an alternative to the Porsche 911, after all, and more body style options could further boost its appeal. Better yet, a T-top sounds like a pretty neat idea. Mercedes-Benz It Could Just Be a FeatureIt's easy to get excited over a new name, but the reality could be well below expectations. For all we know, Grand Top might not be a new model at all. If anything, it could just be a new name for a feature. If so, it's somewhat safe to say that it's a roof-related thing. It could be as simple as a more lavish top for its convertible models, or it could be something in the lines of Rolls-Royce's Starlight Headliner. Grand Top could mean as simple as a different type of panoramic sunroof. We can't say for sure what Mercedes-Benz will use the name for, but we'll be waiting in the meantime. 25. Honda Taps CFO Eiji Fujimura to Lead U.S. MarketHonda Motor Co. has announced a leadership shift aimed at confronting mounting challenges in its U.S. operations. Eiji Fujimura, currently Managing Executive Officer and Chief Financial Officer, will be promoted to Senior Managing Executive Officer and take on responsibility as CEO of American Honda Motor Company, Inc., effective April 1, 2026. This change consolidates financial oversight under regional operational leadership, assigning Fujimura to lead Honda’s largest overseas market amid economic pressure and industry transformation. Fujimura’s appointment underscores Honda’s intent to synchronize strategic financial discipline with on-the-ground commercial execution. With prior experience within Honda’s North American operations, he brings both corporate financial rigor and regional insight to the role. Kristen Brown Not Optimistic about Full EV GrowthHonda’s financial results highlight intensifying strain in the U.S., with profit plunging 42% for the nine months through December 2025. The decline was driven by weaker EV demand and the impact of U.S. tariffs. Fujimura was first to say last year that, as heavy electric vehicle investments failed to generate expected returns, he wasn't “optimistic” about the future of electric vehicles. In response, Honda has scaled back EV targets, cancelled select programs, and shifted focus toward hybrids and stronger-performing segments. Beyond America, Honda is recalibrating by studying China’s fast-evolving market. The surge of new energy vehicles and software-driven platforms from domestic Chinese automakers has exposed competitive gaps in pricing and localization. Those lessons are now shaping Honda’s global strategy, emphasizing flexible platforms, connected technologies, and region-specific execution rather than an aggressive, one-track EV expansion. Honda How Honda is PivotingHonda’s executive reshuffle and financial disclosures reflect an automaker at a strategic crossroads. Elevated leadership for the U.S., one that merges financial acumen with operational command, signals Honda’s acknowledgment that its biggest market requires tight cost control and market-aligned offerings. Fujimura’s task will be to stabilize performance while recalibrating product and pricing strategies in a consumer environment marked by affordability pressures and shifting preferences. Concurrently, Honda’s recalibration on EVs and its absorption of competitive lessons from China underscore a broader shift toward adaptability over ideology in technology investments. The company appears to be moving beyond the one-size-fits-all EV narrative, emphasizing flexible powertrain portfolios and regionally nuanced strategies. As Fujimura steps into his expanded role, Honda’s ability to convert strategic learning into profitable outcomes will define its competitiveness in the evolving global automotive landscape.
