Nitro Funny Car Qualifying Sets Records At Firebird’s 55th NAPA Ignitor
Photos by Brian Losness and Kim Fuller) (Words by Darr Hawthorne) • When a racetrack carries the legacy of the 55th NAPA Ignitor, Idaho’s first 2026 NHRA Hot Rod Heritage Series Nitro Funny Car event at Firebird Raceway, it naturally attracts the sport’s top racers. This year’s edition is no exception, once again bringing the best in nitro funny car racing to Boise. As the Northwest’s longest-running major drag race, the Ignitor is rich in history and tradition. The event debuted in 1971, when legendary driver Don Prudhomme captured the inaugural title in his iconic Hot Wheels Barracuda. Since then, the Ignitor has remained one of the region’s premier drag racing events and a cornerstone of the late Bill New’s Firebird Raceway legacy. This weekend has shown that the well-maintained drag strip surface can take the horsepower with Canadian Nathan Sitko (above) running a solid 5.539 elapsed time at 259.86 MPH in the Ryan Hodgson tuned Bubble-Up Firebird, leading qualifiers. Close behind was Shane Westerfield’s 5.543 ET at 263.20 MPH in the Bardahl-backed Austin & O’Brien Camaro. Returning after sitting out the season opening Good Vibrations March Meet is Tim Boychuk in his new Happy Hour Barracuda-bodied funny car at 5.632 at a whopping, track record-setting 264.70 MPH for Top Speed of the meet, so far. The beat goes on after longtime crew chief Twig Ziegler has retired. In her Boise debut is nitro funny car rookie Eily Stafford, driving Don Nelson’s California Hustler ’78 Firebird tuned by Dale Murray. Murray has Stafford’s ride thumping with much improved 60-foot times and solid 206.13 eighth-mile MPH, qualifying fourth with 5.636 ET at 258.62 MPH. Sunday eliminations begin at Noon and as of this report, with temperatures in the low 60’s and high winds, the Ignitor will be shortened to 660-foot racing. Sitting fifth is Hawaiian Derrick Moreira, driving his Nitro Junkies Camaro with a 5.658 ET at 257.38 MPH. Driving Eddie Knox’s Problem Child Camaro is Todd Plate running a solid 5.668 ET at 242.58 MPH, sitting sixth. March Meet Champion Michael Peck, in his family’s Instigator ’70 Camaro, ran 5.677 ET at 258.27 MPH for seventh. Southern California’s Jerry Espeseth in his Atlas Testing ’73 Camaro rounds out the filed in eighth with a 5.824 at 246.17 MPH with Brad Littlefield tuning. A ninth funny car had entered; however, it is now parked. The Bartone & Lebor Mustang, driven by Kris Krabill was withdrawn and loaded back in the trailer, after making a successful Thursday test session. We’ll have Final Round results from the Firebird Raceway 55th NAPA Ignitor nitro funny cars up this week! Greg Anderson Isn’t Singing the Blues; He’s on a Mission Heading Into Raceday in Chicago
After four consecutive starts from the No. 1 position, seeing Greg Anderson’s name in the No. 4 spot after final qualifying for the Gerber Collision & Glass Route 66 NHRA Nationals may have come as a bit of a surprise. But for the most winning driver in the history of the class, the position is insignificant heading into raceday. Six-time Pro Stock world champion Anderson is fully focused on going the distance in his HendrickCars.com Chevrolet Camaro as he pursues the 114th victory of his career, regardless of where he is on the ladder. That being said, the challenge will begin early as he is set to square off with son Cody. The first round in Chicago will mark the second time this season that father and son have met on Sunday. At the season-opener in Gainesville, Cody won his first round of eliminations over Pro Stock veteran Greg Stanfield, but then it was Dear Old Dad that got the nod in round two. “Obviously, we want this to happen in the final round, but we’ll just have to get a couple of these out of the way before we get to find our way to a final together,” said Anderson. “The bottom line is that we were both a little off in qualifying, and that’s why we ended up stuck together first round. That’s just what happens when you don’t do a good job in qualifying, you have to race someone you really don’t want to. We’re going to have fun with it, but don’t get me wrong – I want to kick his butt and he wants to kick mine. There are no games.” Anderson opened his Chicago qualifying bid with a 6.575-second pass at 209.56 to initially step into the No. 6 spot. In the later session on Friday, he raced to a 6.553, 209.88 that bumped him up two positions to fourth. Saturday’s two qualifying sessions took place in air that was weighted with water after morning showers at Route 66 Raceway, and in the early session, the naturally aspirated factory hot rods showed the impact as few improvements were made. Anderson put up a 6.604 and did not move from the No. 4 spot, and although his 6.553 in the final qualifying round was best of the lot, it wasn’t enough to move him out of fourth. “We were struggling with the starting line out here; it’s just different than what we’ve been on all year, but that is no excuse,” said Anderson. “We certainly have plenty of experience here, plenty of notes, but we still struggled. By the final session, we were better, but tomorrow we need to be better yet.” Anderson’s history in Chicago includes possession of the track record for speed thanks to a 212.39 mph pass made in 2019. He’s also a two-time winner at Route 66 Raceway, with trophies earned in 2011 and 2016. So far this season, the HendrickCars.com Chevy has appeared in two finals and claimed victory at the Lucas Oil Winternationals in Pomona. In addition to strong Sunday performances, Anderson has been picking up bonus qualifying points along the way. He’s currently No. 2 in the Mission Foods Drag Racing Series Pro Stock standings, 76 marks behind reigning world champ Dallas Glenn. It’s early yet, but making up ground on Glenn – while also holding the competition at arm’s length – would certainly be beneficial to Anderson’s cause. “Right now, our Achilles heel is low gear, and we’re working to get that better for tomorrow,” said Anderson. “That’s what it’s going to take to win. It all comes down to those first 60 feet.” Eliminations for the Gerber Collision & Glass Route 66 NHRA Nationals are scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m. Sunday at Route 66 Raceway. Alexis DeJoria Wins Mission #2Fast2Tasty Challenge in Chicago
Alexis DeJoria, the driver of the Bandero Café Chevrolet SS Funny Car, earned a victory for John Force Racing (JFR) today at the Gerber Collision & Glass NHRA Route 66 Nationals presented by PEAK. DeJoria won the Mission #2Fast2Tasty Challenge, a specialty race that takes place during qualifying on Saturday. DeJoria defeated J.R. Todd and her teammate Jordan Vandergriff on her way to victory. This is DeJoria’s first Mission #2Fast2Tasty Challenge win this season and her second overall. DeJoria’s qualifying pass of 3.994 seconds at 329.42 mph on Friday secured her place in the field so the talented Funny Car pilot could turn her focus to competition on Saturday. In a repeat of the semifinals two weeks ago in Georgia, DeJoria lined up against Todd. Track conditions were tricky but crew chiefs Mike Neff and Jonnie Lindberg expertly tuned the Bandero Café Funny Car to a pass of 4.015 at 323.35 to turn on the win light while Todd ran into tire smoke early in the other lane. In an all-JFR final, DeJoria lined up against Vandergriff, who made a great pass earlier in the day, so fans were excited to watch a close side-by-side final between the two competitors. Fate, however, had other plans. After Vandergriff’s burnout, his clutch wouldn’t engage, causing him to shut off and cede the triumph to DeJoria, who experienced intense tire shake after leaving the starting line. Nevertheless, the Bandero Café Funny Car team got it done, picking up a cash prize and valuable bonus points in the process. “We’re finally back to winning,” remarked DeJoria. “It came at the cost of my teammate and it was a lackluster final. But we got the ‘W’ and that’s all that matters. I just had a feeling we were going to win it today. I knew it in my heart. I definitely didn’t expect to win like that. We’ve been really consistent. That last pass was the only time we didn’t get down the track. Getting to bring a win to JFR is huge. Working with John Force is just a dream come true. After going to the finals in Gainesville (at the season opener), I thought for sure we would get a win soon after that, but it took a little longer. We’ve had some ups and downs. Some of the tracks have been pretty tricky. We’ve had to do some pedal jobs. Sometimes you come out on the good side and sometimes you don’t. That’s the challenge of this class and part of what I love about it. We’re just getting started and we’ve got a lot left to show.” When competition in the NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series begins tomorrow, DeJoria will start eliminations from the 12th spot on the ladder and will face the No. 5 qualifier, Spencer Hyde, in the opening round. Defending Event Champion Jason Dietsch Runs to Flexjet Factory Stock Showdown No. 1 at Route 66 Nationals in Chicago
Last year Jason Dietsch ran the table at Route 66 Raceway winning two national events in the span of 24 hours. Today the veteran driver from Edgerton, Ohio, ran his Ford Mustang Cobra Jet to the No. 1 qualifier position. Dietsch is No. 1 ahead of current points leader Jonathan Allegrucci and championship contender Scott Libersher’s COPO Camaro at the Gerber Collision & Glass Route 66 Nationals presented by Peak. Dietsch posted his quickest time of the weekend in the Flexjet Factory Stock Showdown Series in the opening qualifying session with a quickest of the event elapsed time 7.644 seconds at 179.30 mph. “It was a long day,” said Dietsch, who along with the rest of the class had to deal with a schedule adjustment. “I was ready to go for that last qualifier, and we’ll be ready for first round. My son Taylor isn’t here this weekend, so I have all the good parts this weekend. I had to leave him at home, so I could try to get a win.” Through two qualifying sessions Dietsch and the rest of the class had to adjust to changing weather conditions. In the final qualifying session the full field of COPO Camaros, Dodge Drag Paks and Mustang Cobra Jets stepped up their respective performances wowing the packed grandstands. Early in the session David Davies II ran his Dodge Challenger Drag Pak to a solid jump from No. 13 to No. 9 with a quicker 7.751 at 178.78 mph run from his previous quickest of 7.814 seconds at 174.84 mph. Doug Duell and his Dodge Drag Pak stepped up from 7.772 seconds at 172.92 mph to 7.757 at 178.40 mph to go into eliminations as the No. 10 qualifier. Lee Hartman, who is looking for his first race win, matched his quickest time of 7.694 seconds in Q3, which was quickest of the session. In the final pair it was Allegrucci beside Dietsch in a possible preview of a final round match-up. Allegrucci posted an impressive 7.697 seconds at 178.95 mph pass door to door with Dietsch’s 7.699 seconds at 178.54 mph run. “I mean that last run was pretty good,” said Dietsch. “We knew the air wasn’t as good as before, so we weren’t going to run as quick. We went out there and ran almost identical times, so it’s pretty cool. I hope it’s like that in the finals. I need to get a win badly. I want one of those new Diamond Wally’s. They’re pretty sweet.” Kim Shirley will race No. 2 qualifier Allegrucci, who will be trying to defend the $1,000 Flexjet Bounty, in the first round. Allegrucci won the NHRA 4-Wide Nationals in Charlotte and is looking for his second win in a row and the chance to double the bounty at the next race. The first round of eliminations at the Gerber Collision & Glass Route 66 Nationals presented by Peak at Route 66 Raceway will begin Saturday evening with eliminations concluding tomorrow. Langdon, DeJoria, Enders, and Herrera Get Wins in Mission #2Fast2Tasty Challenge at Route 66 Raceway
Top Fuel points leader – and the sport’s fastest driver – Shawn Langdon picked up his first victory in the Mission #2Fast2Tasty Challenge this season on Saturday at Route 66 Raceway, knocking off Justin Ashley in the final round of the bonus event as part of this weekend’s 26th annual Gerber Collision & Glass Route 66 NHRA Nationals presented by PEAK. Alexis DeJoria (Funny Car), Erica Enders (Pro Stock) and Gaige Herrera (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also won the Mission #2Fast2Tasty Challenge, while Doug Kalitta (Top Fuel), Jack Beckman (Funny Car), Enders (Pro Stock) and Angie Smith (Pro Stock Motorcycle) all qualified No. 1 at the sixth of 20 races during the 2026 NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series season. After struggling through the first three sessions this weekend at Route 66 Raceway, Langdon put together a strong run when he needed it, going 3.770-seconds at 336.57 mph in his 12,000-horsepower Kalitta Air dragster to defeat Ashley. It gave Langdon the specialty race victory and also put the past world champion in a much better position heading into eliminations on Sunday, where he’ll look for his second straight victory this season. “It was more than just going up there and trying to win the Mission (#2Fast2Tasty Challenge) final,” Langdon said. “We needed to make a run down the track, too. We were pretty far down in the qualifying order. We were trying to go about 3.76 and it ran .77, so it was a good run. It responded to what we did. We just had to get it calmed down a little bit. We’re trying to run too fast, too early.” Reigning world champion Doug Kalitta stayed in the No. 1 spot, earning his second straight No. 1 qualifier on the strength of Friday’s 3.720 at 338.17 in his 12,000-horsepower Mac Tools dragster. Maddi Gordon took second with a 3.738 at 334.90 and Billy Torrence qualified third after going 3.746 at 336.32 on Friday. Josh Hart, who qualified fourth, broke the track speed record on Saturday with a pass of 341.25. “Getting the number one qualifier today is a good thing,” Kalitta said. “That last session last night was kind of interesting, because everybody was kind of one-upping one another, and it got down to us, and as a driver, you’re sitting there going, ‘Man, I sure hope we can pull this off.’ You try to stage real shallow because that’ll get you the best ET out of it. Anytime you get down to the end, and you know there’s another pair behind you, you’re just hoping to stay ahead. Tomorrow’s going to be a good day for racing, so we’ll just see what it’s got for us.” Alexis DeJoria also claimed her first Mission #2Fast2Tasty Challenge victory of the year in Funny Car, defeating John Force Racing teammate Jordan Vandergriff in the final round of the bonus race. Vandergriff ran into car issues and had to shut the car off on the starting line, handing the win to DeJoria, who smoked the tires almost instantly and went 8.301 at 82.43 in her 12,000-horsepower Bandido Premium Tequila Chevrolet SS. That run notwithstanding, DeJoria has been solid in her debut year with powerhouse John Force Racing, but this was the first triumph of the year for the veteran, who was thrilled with the result as she continues to build into a championship contender. “I’m finally back in a winner’s circle, and that’s good even though it came at the cost of my teammate, and it was a lackluster final. We got the ‘W’ and that’s all that matters. The win went to a JFR car so that’s great,” DeJoria said. “I just had a feeling we were going to win it. I just knew in my heart. It was one of those things. That’s actually the first time we didn’t get down the track. It shook really hard, but we made it three out of four runs.” It was a JFR sweep in Funny Car, too, as defending event winner Jack Beckman stayed atop the field thanks to Friday’s run of 3.913 at 329.99 in his 12,000-horsepower PEAK Chevrolet SS for John Force Racing. Beckman made another strong run to close the day as he’s currently on the exact same path from last year when he qualified No. 1 and won the race. Ron Capps stayed in second with a 3.916 at 330.31 and back-to-back world champ Austin Prock jumped to third with a pass of 3.920 at 331.94. Beckman opens raceday against Chris King. “I’ve always felt like my job, as a driver, in terms of interacting with crew chiefs, is to let them think consciously a little bit more,” Beckman said. “In other words, when we don’t make a good run, and they’re looking at the numbers, I said, ‘Tell me what you would do differently, knowing what you know now.’ “I think our struggles were more of trying to do things to get more speed out of this car and we took one step back, but three of the four qualifying runs we got great data.” Erica Enders’ strong weekend at Route 66 Raceway continued on Saturday, as the six-time world champion won her first Mission #2Fast2Tasty Challenge of the year, beating teammate Greg Stanfield with a run of 6.563 at 208.75 in her Johnson’s Horsepowered Garage/Melling Performance/R+L Carriers entry for Elite Motorsports. It was a long time coming for Enders, who had struggled in the early part of this season. But this weekend could mark a huge turnaround, as she also qualified No. 1 for the first time in two years thanks to Friday’s standout run of 6.542 at 209.92. That puts her in prime position to make it a clean sweep this weekend and it would come at an ideal point in the season. With a chance to win her 50th career Pro Stock race – at the track where she won her first Pro Stock race – Enders will start eliminations against Derrick Reese. “It’s super exciting. I love racing here at Joliet,” Enders said. “I started racing Super Comp dragsters here back when I was in high school, so I’ve been coming here an awful long time and then to secure our first pro win here back in 2012, it’s just been a special place ever since that time. So, it would be fitting if this was where the tide started to turn and it has so far this weekend, securing the number one spot and then winning the Mission Foods #2Fast2Tasty deal. It’s a great start to the weekend. Tomorrow’s the day that matters and I really, really want one of those diamond Wallys.” Jeg Coughlin Jr. took second with a 6.543 at 210.21 and Stanfield stayed in the top three after going 6.549 at 210.11. Points leader and defending world champ Dallas Glenn qualified 11th. Pro Stock Motorcycle’s Gaige Herrera put together a clutch performance in the Mission #2Fast2Tasty Challenge, using a big holeshot to hold off Angie Smith and win the bonus race for a second time this season with a run of 6.757 at 200.86 on his RevZilla/Vance & Hines Suzuki. Herrera went .024 on the starting line, which proved to be enough to slip past Smith, who put together the quickest run of the weekend in the class in the matchup. “It was a good final there. I knew I had to try to get any advantage I could on the starting line,” Herrera said. “We pulled out the ‘special tire’… we kind of pulled everything we could, because we knew we needed to. She’s got the bike to beat this weekend and my hat’s off to her. She’s been doing well this year so far and so has Matt and all of team MSR. It’s been making the class much more fun and interesting. It’s going to be a good day of racing tomorrow, for sure.” Smith’s run of 6.726 at 201.70 on her Denso Auto Parts Buell in the final round of the specialty race gave her the No. 1 qualifier for the second time in four races this season. She made the quickest runs in the class on both Friday and Saturday, something she hopes will lead to her first win of 2026. “When you are the number one qualifier and you know you have the machine, the motorcycle that I do, I have to focus on one round at a time, go do my job and the cards will fall how they want to fall,” Smith said. “Hopefully, tomorrow, about 4 o’clock, I have a trophy, and we’re partying in the winner’s circle, but being No. 1 qualifier gives you a lot of confidence, but you can’t let it give you too much confidence. You still have to focus on the job at hand, and you just have to go out there and know what you need to do.” Ryan Oehler qualified second with a 6.744 at 201.31 and Herrera took third with Saturday’s winning run. Eliminations for the Gerber Collision & Glass Route 66 NHRA Nationals presented by PEAK begin at 11 a.m. CT on Sunday at Route 66 Raceway. This story was originally published on May 16, 2026. Ellington, Chitty, Laughter, and Cunningham Claim Wins at MWDRS Season Opener in Tulsa
The Throwdown in T-Town lived up to the hype as the “Baddest Race on The Mother Road” as the stars and cars of the Summit Racing Equipment Midwest Drag Racing Series did battle at Tulsa Raceway Park May 8-9 for the season opener of their historic 10th season. The event started out on Thursday with the annual MWDRS Awards Banquet, held at Tulsa Raceway Park this year, as the series honored past champions. A particular highlight was the presentation of the Midwest Drag Racing Series Legacy Award, given out to the Compressed Air Supercharging team and Wade Pennington. Wade’s family and friends, including reigning champions Jovee and Karlee Brundidge and Keith Youngblood. After rain pushed back the opening rounds of qualifying from Friday evening to Saturday morning, it was set to be a jam-packed day of racing. Stroud Safety Pro Mod opened up qualifying with a bang as Keith Haney erupted in the very first run of the day, sending his scoop flying in the air and necessitating an engine change. As the day turned into evening it was a familiar matchup that presented itself in the Pro Mod finals. Coming from opposite sides of the ladder, Ryan Martin – making his MWDRS debut – lined up next to Shawn “Murder Nova” Ellington. Ellington’s ProCharger-equipped Camaro, “Blue,” owned by Haney, was the No. 1 qualifier and quickest car of the weekend (3.618), but he wouldn’t need that speed as Martin redlit and solved the equation, giving Ellington the win in two consecutive MWDRS season-openers. New competitors were featured across all classes, and nowhere was that more apparent than in Fueltech Pro 4.20. A field of 10 cars competed for the race and the new prizes courtesy of R&M Trailers and Sandlian Auto Salvage. Among those making their debut were Bobby Savedra III, Erwin Bush, Terry Teague, and JR Sandlian. Reigning 4.20 champion David Pierce would make it to the final round, but it was Michael Chitty who usurped the triple crown winner in the early morning hours north of Tulsa. Chitty would go 4.22 as Pierce broke out by .004 seconds. It was reigning Top Dragster runner-up Kati Laughter who notched her first win in her MWDRS career. She followed in the footsteps of her teammate and reigning UEM Pistons Top Dragster champion Keith Youngblood, who went out in the second round. Travis Cannon, her fiancé and tuner, was notably thrilled in race control after the race. Kelvin Brown made his illustrious return to Compressed Air Supercharging Top Sportsman. The 2-time champion made it all the way to the finals to line up across from his teammate Tim Cunningham, in a final that saw Cunningham take home the trophy and the check. Cunningham dialed his Honey Bros Racing machine into a 4.52 and went dead on with a one to secure the win. Piloting his nitrous-fed Beretta, Taylor Strange took home the win in the Small Tire Shootout, defeating Brandon Sandlian and the Junkyard Stude in the final round. In Race Star Wheels Pro Junior it would be a McCann over Kolbi Keith final in the new 7.90 index. In Zimmerman Sportsman Junior it would be Rodgers over Holt with an 8.95 dial against an 8.97 run. The MWDRS is back in action May 28-30 as part of the Shakedown in M-Town. The race will feature the baddest cars in the radial world, as well as MWDRS Pro Mod, Top Dragster, and Top Sportsman. Kalitta, Beckman, Enders, and Angie Smith Start in Provisional No. 1 Spots at Gerber Collision & Glass Route 66 NHRA Nationals
Reigning Top Fuel world champion Doug Kalitta made the quickest run on Friday at Route 66 Raceway, taking the provisional No. 1 spot at the 26th annual Gerber Collision & Glass Route 66 NHRA Nationals presented by PEAK. Jack Beckman (Funny Car), Erica Enders (Pro Stock) and Angie Smith (Pro Stock Motorcycle) are also the provisional No. 1 qualifiers at the sixth of 20 races during the 2026 NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series season. Kalitta, who is currently second in points behind Kalitta Motorsports teammate Shawn Langdon, went 3.720-seconds at 338.17-mph in his 12,000-horsepower Mac Tools dragster, putting the veteran in line for his second straight No. 1 qualifier this season and the 68th in his career. He is also after his second victory of the season and first at Route 66 Raceway in 20 years. Kalitta, who has two world titles in the past three years, has three career victories at the standout Chicago facility. “I was happy to hear that Alan [Johnson, crew chief] was happy on the starting line. That was cool. I was super happy,” Kalitta said. “It was kind of interesting before that run. They put weight on the clutch, and the next thing you know, they’re doing this, doing that so you can kind of tell that they’re hopping it up. It looked like we needed every bit of it because everybody’s running super close. “This place is a cool place to run. It’s close to home, and we’ve just got a lot of our friends from Michigan here, so, you know, we’re just happy that we have a good run in.” Rookie sensation Maddi Gordon, who made a pair of 340-mph runs in Valdosta, is second with a strong 3.738 at 334.90 and Billy Torrence’s run of 3.746 at 336.32 has him third. Points leader Shawn Langdon is currently 13th. Funny Car’s Jack Beckman is on a good path to repeating last year’s win at Route 66 Raceway, making an impressive run of 3.913 at 329.99 in his 12,000-horsepower PEAK Chevrolet SS for John Force Racing. Beckman performed well at his sponsor’s race a year ago and is off to a good start again in 2026, which bodes well after an early exit two weeks ago in Valdosta. Should that number hold, the past world champion would pick up his first top qualifier of the year and the 34th in his career. He also knows just how important it is to perform well on a weekend like this. “That last run was entertaining and scary. It was just a handful and it was entertaining. I hope everybody in the stands was half as entertained as I was,” Beckman said. “I’m just incredibly satisfied that we’ve got some bonus points so far. We’ve made two absolutely solid runs, one in each lane. We have great data. We can now afford to push on Saturday and if we push too hard, that’ll teach us something as well. So, it really just sets us up for a lot more race day success.” Ron Capps, who has a pair of wins in 2026, is second with a 3.916 at 330.31 and Cruz Pedregon sits third thanks to a 3.920 at 324.59. Points leader J.R. Todd is right behind in fourth with a 3.942 at 332.26. Valdosta winner Jordan Vandergriff sits 16th after his run in the second qualifying session was disqualified due to a pinned parachute. In Pro Stock, it appears Erica Enders’ early-season struggles are behind her, as motorsports’ winningest female driver put on a show at the site of her first Pro Stock victory, taking the top spot with a standout run of 6.542 at 209.92 in her Johnson’s Horsepowered Garage/Melling Performance/R+L Carriers entry for Elite Motorsports. Should that stay atop the field, the six-time world champion would pick up her first top qualifier since the 2024 season. It hasn’t been an ideal start for the 50-time national event winner, either, as Enders sits an uncharacteristic seventh in points. Qualifying had been a struggle, but Enders advanced to the semifinals in Valdosta and took another big step on Friday with a pair of strong runs. She has a chance for her 50th Pro Stock win this weekend, which would be meaningful for it to come at the site of her historic first victory in 2012. “It’s definitely a good feeling and I’m excited,” Enders said. “It’s fun to have the provisional number one after the first session. I’m obviously surprised that we stayed number one, but I honestly don’t think that we’re fast. The (2025) season was extremely rough for our entire organization and ’26 hasn’t started off on the right foot, either, but we’ve been working really hard, and it’s about tenacity and not giving up, and just keep plugging away at it, and that’s what my guys are really good at. “I love coming here. I’ve been coming here my entire life and embracing it in all different categories, but I remember vividly winning here in 2012 and being in this very press room, and I was talking to the media, and Bob Glidden called my phone and I’ll never forget it. That was so cool because he was my hero and a legend, and that was my first win. It’s been a long, crazy, crazy road, but I think it is serendipitous, and I love racing here. So, I think it would be great if this were the turning point.” Jeg Coughlin Jr. is second with a 6.543 at 210.21 and Greg Stanfield helped make it a clean sweep for Elite Motorsports in the top three after going 6.549 at 210.11. Pro Stock Motorcycle’s Angie Smith continues to perform well in qualifying, making the quickest run in both sessions on Friday at Route 66 Raceway, including a 6.738 at 200.17 in the opening session on her Denso Auto Parts Buell. That puts Smith in a great position to collect her second top qualifier in the first four races of the year, also continuing the dominant start – especially in qualifying – for Matt Smith Racing. Smith and her husband, Matt, who won in Valdosta, have been atop the field at the first three races and it could be a fourth this weekend. The only thing missing for Angie is a victory, something she would love to change this weekend in Chicago. “It felt really good,” Smith said. “We went home, and after Valdosta, since we had some time, we took my motor out and freshened it up. “I knew it was a good run. I did not think that it would hold, just because of Gaige [Herrera], Richard [Gadson] and Matt’s [Smith] success with tracks like this that are fast tracks, but it did, and I’m pretty happy with it. We’ve been working really, really hard. We’ve been working hard on our 60-foot program, because there have been a couple of other people in the class talking a little bit of smack, telling us that we needed to go to work on our 60-foot program.” Gadson is currently second with a 6.778 at 200.38 and Herrera, who is undefeated at Route 66 Raceway, took third on the first day after a run of 6.784 at 197.94. Qualifying continues at 12 p.m. CT on Saturday at the Gerber Collision & Glass Route 66 NHRA Nationals presented by PEAK at Route 66 Raceway. This story was originally published on May 15, 2026. Kruse Captures $10,000 Warm-Up Race Win to Open The Autoland Door Car Challenge at Byron Dragway
Doug Kruse of nearby Rockford, Illinois captured the $10,000 warm-up race Thursday to open the weekend at the Autoland Door Car Challenge at Byron Dragway. Nick Engler of Becker, Minnesota earned a $1,500 payout as the warm-up race runner-up. Engler, who is the reigning NHRA West Central Division Champion, competes as a no box, bottom-bulb entry. In the final, Kruse had an .029 reaction-time and ran a 6.539 elapsed-time on his 6.49 dial-in. Engler’s had an .048 reaction-time and ran a 6.181 elapsed-time on his 6.15 dial-in. This final round captured a special sentiment that is unique to door car bracket racing as the cars themselves are a critical part of the story. A “late bloomer” to being behind the wheel of a race car, Kruse only assumed the driving duties of his Chevrolet Camaro in memory of his late-brother Ken “The Duz” Kruse, whom the car belonged to. And Engler’s Dodge R/T belonged to his late-grandfather and has been in the Engler family since it was new in 1969. These are the meaningful and deeply personal stories that make door car bracket racing extra special. The racing continues Friday with a $15,000 to race. Saturday is highlighted by a $50,000 to win main event. Sunday will conclude with another $15,000 finale. The Autoland Door Car Challenge is at Byron Dragway in Byron, Illinois May 14-17, 2026. This weekend’s event is the fifth of 11 races in the category during the 2026 campaign and the race is powered by ProFlow Pumping Solutions. As the fifth stop of the year, it marks the penultimate race of the regular season before the five-race “Road to the Championship” playoffs and the competition is as tight as ever. There have been four different winners – Derek Menholt, Justin Bond, Mike Stavrinos and Jason Collins – through the first four races, with Menholt getting his second career win and Collins picking up his first career NHRA Pro Mod win. Collins’ triumph came at the most recent event at South Georgia Motorsports Park, doing so in just his second career race in the series. It added another strong contender to the mix as the category heads to Chicago to finish off a stretch that included three races in four weeks. “This event brings together the kind of energy, speed, and technical excellence that the ProFlow Pumping Solutions Team respects, both on the track and in the industries, we serve,” declares Scott Champlin, President & Owner of ProFlow Pumping Solutions. “As a company built around motion, horsepower, and keeping critical systems running, we feel right at home in a sport where highly engineered equipment must perform in demanding conditions. “ProFlow Pumping Solutions is excited to support NHRA Pro Mod Racing as an Official Event Sponsor, and we look forward to joining fans and industry partners for an unforgettable weekend of racing. Last year’s victory, which came against reigning world champion J.R. Gray in the final round. He qualified in the top spot in 2025 as part of an impressive weekend and will look to do so again while taking on a talented field that includes points leader Bond, Menholt, Gray, who is after his first win of the year after a dominant 2025 championship season, Stavrinos, Billy Banaka, Stevie “Fast” Jackson, Mike Thielen, Lyle Barnett, Collins and Stan Shelton. The JBS Equipment NHRA Pro Mod Drag Racing Series presented by Elite Motorsports features two qualifying rounds at 12:45 and 3:30 p.m. CT on Friday, and the final two qualifying rounds at 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday. Eat Sleep Race’s Brian Mabutas Talks Fast Life Fest at Cecil County Dragway
When the gates swing open at Cecil County Dragway this Saturday morning, Jim Halsey’s Rising Sun, Maryland quarter-mile will host something it has never seen in the history of the track: a no-prep drag race. That’s the headline tucked inside Fast Life Fest 2026, the two-day motorsports festival landing at Cecil County on May 16-17. The brainchild of Eat Sleep Race founder Brian Mabutas in partnership with Discovery Channel Street Outlaws stars Farmtruck and AZN, the Fast Kids Club, and Teter Built, Fast Life Fest packs a no-prep program, a kids’ power-wheel drag race, a car show, a burnout contest, vendors, and a Junior Dragster slate into one weekend built for racers and the families they bring with them. For Mabutas, the whole thing started with a phone call. “I was talking to Discovery Channel’s Street Outlaws star Jeff ‘AZN’ Bonnett, and he said that him and Farmtruck love seeing the power wheels content, and this was three years ago,” says Mabutas. “I told him with all these millions of views that the kids content is getting, we were considering making it a live event where we could get spectators. Within that same conversation we said, ‘OK, why don’t we actually turn this into an event with real drag racing combined with the kids power-wheel drag racing,’ and then obviously add a car show element to it. Long story short, that’s how the idea of the event came together. Obviously, their background with no prep, we decided to make it no-prep drag racing. Alex took control of promoting and managing the kids portion, and then Eat Sleep Race and Farmtruck and AZN were on the side of promoting and producing the drag racing and the car show.” The Cecil County booking wasn’t random. Alex Teter of Teter Built had already run kids’ power-wheel races at the track, and the parent base that fuels that grassroots scene lives within a tank of gas of the Maryland strip. “We chose Cecil County because Alex already hosted a few of these kids power-wheel drag races at other events at the track, so there was a history already there, and because his community of parents that race these cars are local to that track,” says Mabutas. “It’s only two hours away. We have people that could support us within a two-hour radius. The hardest part about this was convincing Farmtruck and AZN to do the event over there because they were 20 hours away, but they believed in the idea, and that’s how we landed on Cecil County. The idea has floated of taking the event over to their area, but the problem is we’re able to draw over 100 parents to this event because Alex has built up this community of kids racers that are very local. There’s a lot of risk if we were to take it out of state, because the largest community is the one he’s built locally.” The competition slate is intentionally wide. Saturday runs 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. as a test-and-tune and grudge day with a $60 tech card. Sunday is the heads-up payday: Small-Tire 28×10.5 Non-W, Stick Shift H-Pattern, All Motor, Honda FWD, Daily Driver, Junior Dragster, RWD/AWD, 11.50 and 10.50 Index, Test and Tune, and Run What You Brung. Eighth-mile classes share staging lanes with quarter-mile classes. Imports and domestics run the same ladder. The Power Wheels cars get their own program in the lanes, and every kid 10 and under gets through the gate for free. The sponsor row reflects the build. Summit Racing Equipment, HPS Performance Products, and Exedy Racing Clutch back the event, Peotter’s presents the car show, and Kids Wash Club presents the kids’ car show. Before the green light drops, Brian wanted to make sure one name landed in print. “Special recognition would be the partners, Farmtruck and AZN, Eat Sleep Race, Fast Kids Club, and Teter Built, and also a shout-out to Jim Halsey for believing in the idea,” says Mabutas. “This event is actually the first no prep that he’s ever ran at Cecil County in the history of the track, so thanks to him for believing in the idea and allowing a no prep to run at Cecil County Dragway.” That last line is the real story. A Mid-Atlantic mainstay opening its prepped surface to no-prep racing for the first time, on a weekend built around kids in power wheels, is the kind of crossover the sport keeps needing more of. Tickets and the full schedule are at fastlifefest.org. This story was originally published on May 15, 2026. Matt Hagan, Leah Pruett Look to Carry Momentum Into Chicago for NHRA Route 66 Nationals
With a quarter of the Mission Foods NHRA Drag Racing Series season already past, Tony Stewart Racing enters this weekend’s Gerber Collision & Glass Route 66 NHRA Nationals with both Matt Hagan’s Dodge//SRT Hellcat Funny Car and Leah Pruett’s Dodge Top Fuel dragster sitting third in their respective points categories. Hagan, a 56-time Funny Car national event winner, has had a quarter final finish or better through the first five races with a win and two semi-final finishes. His victory at the NHRA Winternationals extended his streak of seasons with at least one victory to 14. The Dodge//SRT team has qualified in the top five at each event. They are coming off a No. 4 qualifying effort and quarter final exit at the Southern Nationals at South Georgia Motorsports Park. “I’m really looking forward to getting to Chicago and a good race track, both lanes are smooth and it’s a stadium style arena, but the biggest thing is just side-by-side racing. I think last race in Georgia was tough, it was a new race track for us and lane choice really mattered,” Hagan said. “Chicago has always been a really good track and we’re able to put on a good show. I’m looking forward to getting back to it. I’m looking forward to getting back to racing after our week off.” The four-time Funny Car world champion has tallied four wins in five final round appearances at Route 66 Raceway. His wins came in 2010, 2013, 2014 and most recently in 2024. Hagan also earned No. 1 qualifier positions in 2016 and 2018. In 2025, he qualified No. 3 and had a semi-final finish. “Route 66 Raceway is just one of those tracks where it has good vibes, it’s always treated me pretty well. I’ve got a lot of good memories here. I set a national record during one of my wins and it was back when you had to back it up, so winning that weekend was a wild deal. There was a big thunderstorm that came in that put racing behind a couple hours but conditions got really good afterwards. We were really able to lay it down and we went out there and officially set the national record and win the race. It was wild,” Hagan said. “And then two of my wins, they came at the expense of John Force. That’s something, as a driver, I’m super honored to be able to say that I’ve competed against him, battled it out for race wins and championships. Racing a guy who has had a hand in the evolution of the sport, it’s cool and I’m glad I got to race with him. He’s one of the best there ever will be. To have raced him here in the Chicago finals and gotten the win against him twice, that means a lot. It just was always an honor to race John.” Hagan is on the verge of another milestone in his Hall of Fame caliber career. Already named to NHRA’s top 75 drivers of all time, Hagan’s next final round appearance will be his 100th in the professional ranks of NHRA. “Wow, my next final round will be my 100th that’s a pretty wild stat there. I guess what pops in my head at first is I’ve been out here doing this a while and I’m getting old. But, you know I’m a little better than 50-50 on wins so I’m just hoping that next final round was as good as my last, winning the Winternationals,” Hagan said. “Nonetheless man, I’m really blessed to have those and to have had the opportunity. You can do everything right and still get everything wrong and you aren’t guaranteed to be blessed to win the trophy and the money and the bonus for the guys. Just having 100 opportunities to win trophies, to have won 56 of them, I’m ready for the next one. In Top Fuel, Leah Pruett looks as if she never stepped out of the driver’s seat for two years to start a family. She returns to the Route 66 Nationals for the first time since 2023 looking for her first win in Chicago. Her Dodge Top Fuel dragster team has advanced to the quarterfinals or beyond each of her five starts this year, earning runner-up honors at the Arizona Nationals and a No. 1 qualifying start at the Winternantionals in Southern California. After a No. 8 qualifying start and second round exit at the the Southern Nationals at South Georgian Motorsports Park, Pruett stayed and tested. “Testing overall went very well as we continue to put together pieces in a much larger picture. We’ve absolutely had steady progression through these first five races,” Pruett said. “Our first Wally of the year is in the crossharis. It’s so close, I can feel it. That feeling is mutual throughout our pit.” Adding to that confidence this weekend is knowing the team surrounding her are technically coming in as defending event winners. In 2025, with Pruett’s husband Tony Stewart in the driver’s seat, the TSR Dodge Top Fuel dragster raced to victory. It was their second win of the 2025 season. “I believe Chicago and this team have had a good working relationship. So yes, it gives me even more confidence coming into this event,” Pruett said. “Tony winning and bringing our son Dom to the winners circle was a great memory and I’m looking forward to making the Chicago family picture full circle with a win of my own this weekend.” Competition at the Gerber Collision & Glass Route 66 NHRA Nationals begins with four rounds of qualifying Friday at 1:30 and 4 p.m. and Saturday at noon and 2:30 p.m. Eliminations are slated for Sunday at 11 a.m. Television coverage of the event will be on FOX Sports 1 (FS1) with qualifying shows Friday at 7:30 p.m. ET and Saturday at 11:30 p.m. ET. Eliminations will air Sunday at 5:30 p.m. ET. The post Matt Hagan, Leah Pruett Look to Carry Momentum Into Chicago for NHRA Route 66 Nationals first appeared on Drag Illustrated. NHRA, Dodge, and Mopar Bring National Event Racing Back to Michigan for First Time in 66 Years for NHRA Debut at U.S. 131 Motorsports Park
NHRA National event racing returns to the great state of Michigan, courtesy of NHRA, Dodge and Mopar. NHRA officials announce that the Dodge and Mopar brands will serve as title and presenting sponsors of the first NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series event at U.S. 131 Motorsports Park. Racing takes place Sept. 18-20 during NHRA’s 75th anniversary season. The event is the first of six playoff races during the 20-event 2026 campaign. The inaugural Dodge NHRA Great Lakes Nationals presented by Mopar makes its debut at the standout facility in Martin, Michigan, representing the first NHRA National event Michigan stop in 66 years and kicking off the NHRA Countdown to the Championship playoffs in grand fashion. “Having Dodge and Mopar step into the role of title and presenting sponsor for our debut event at U.S. 131 Motorsports Park is incredibly exciting,” NHRA Vice President and Chief Development Officer Brad Gerber said. “This race has huge importance as the first event in the Countdown to the Championship, and partnering with two iconic brands like Dodge and Mopar, which have a deep-rooted history in the area and in NHRA drag racing, elevates it even further. It’s a great way to launch the playoffs at a new venue, and we’re looking forward to delivering a standout weekend for everyone involved.” “Let the Countdown begin,” said Matt McAlear, Dodge CEO. “We are thrilled to partner with Mopar to bring NHRA National event racing back to Michigan for the first time in 66 years, at the same time we celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Dodge Charger. Dodge performance is rooted in drag racing then and now, and it will be a great weekend to kick off the NHRA playoffs.” The last full NHRA National event in Michigan was at the now-defunct Detroit Dragway in 1960. The anticipation is already building for the first event at the popular Martin, Michigan, facility, and the addition of Dodge and Mopar as title and presenting sponsors adds to the excitement for the race. Dodge and Mopar continue to be heavily involved in the NHRA ranks, serving as partners for the Tony Stewart Racing team’s Top Fuel and Funny Car drivers, longtime Dodge and Mopar racers Matt Hagan and Leah Pruett. Racing legend and team owner Tony Stewart also competes in the Top Fuel class with Dodge HEMI® power. Pruett has impressed upon returning to the Top Fuel ranks in 2026, while Hagan is a four-time world champion who has spent his entire career in a Dodge Funny car and expects to be in the title hunt yet again. Stewart, who won the regular-season championship in 2025, already posted an early-season win this year. In Martin, Dodge and Mopar will have a strong presence at U.S. 131 Motorsports Park with a popular interactive exhibit and Dodge muscle cars on display, including the new SIXPACK-powered Dodge Charger. Additional information on Dodge and Mopar activities planned around the NHRA’s historic return to Michigan will be shared later this summer. With championship dreams in mind, all the stars in Top Fuel, Funny Car, Pro Stock and Pro Stock Motorcycle are set to debut at U.S. 131 Motorsports Park, one of four new facilities during NHRA’s milestone season. The special diamond Wally trophy celebrating NHRA’s 75th season will be on the line for the winners of the new race in Martin. The event will also be broadcast on FS1, including eliminations on Sunday, Sept. 20. The inaugural Dodge NHRA Great Lakes Nationals presented by Mopar will also feature thrilling competition in the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, which includes some of the sport’s top drivers in Top Alcohol Dragster, Top Alcohol Funny Car and Flexjet Factory Stock Showdown.
