  1. We’ve got more fresh photos from the Lone Star Throwdown, a Texas sized show that never disappoints! If you missed our previous galleries, don’t worry because we’ve got a link below for you to check out. (Words and Photos by Chad Reynolds) I hit the Lone Star Throwdown in Conroe Texas this weekend and as usual was blown away by the turnout of great trucks. When I arrived at the just after it opened, I have to admit I was a bit worried. The place was not full. Not by a long shot. Now we normally get down here to the show an hour or so later, so I was trying to convince myself it was going to be okay, but I wasn’t doing a very good job of it. That was until about 10, when a definite increase in the hum around the places started happening and cruise traffic started really increasing. By the time I left the show a few hours later it was hopping as usual. And while the morning started off chilly and overcast, the grounds were in great shape with little or no wet spots from the showers that were expected Friday. And by 10 am I had to take my hoodie off because it was just too warm. It was great weather for a truck show friends. The food trucks were slinging snacks, although I didn’t see the hot chocolate ans s’mores folks from last year that made a killing. It really was a great day at the show. Lone Star Throwdown, or LST as it’s often referred to, is one of the premier custom truck shows in the country, and it happens rain or shine. This show is always one of my favorites. It draws folks from all over the country, along with Canada and Mexico. In 2027 you’ll find us on site with the OBS Suburban project you guys don’t know about yet. And maybe a merch stand, who knows. Here is our fifth gallery of photos, with tons more coming over the next several days. Check back tomorrow for more! 2. Gassers are awesome, and I love everything about them, but most of the ones we see nowadays are just show cars. That’s okay, because we’d totally drive one on the street just for fun, but when you see them doing big boy burnouts, wheelstands, and more, you know they are doing God’s work. God’s Gasser Work that is. So when I saw this feature video on Russell’s wheel standing 1956 Chevrolet gasser they call Strange Magic, I knew I had to share it. This is one cool car that does EPIC burnouts, at all angles, leaves with the wheels up every time, and can be three kinds of out of control at any moment! What’s not to love about that? Check it out and let us know if this video makes you want to build a gasser. It kinda does for us! Video Description: Russell turns a barn find ’56 Chevy into a wheel standing gasser named Strange Magic. Film commissioned as part of Panhead Custom Ales’ custom can series. 3. Sometimes the story behind a car that is a barn find, garage find, field find, or junkyard find is as good as the car itself. And sometimes these cars find themselves abandoned for no real good reason. And after so many years, there are plenty of times when the reason it is parked has long been forgotten. I’ve heard stories of old trucks sitting because the owner bought a new one and just couldn’t imagine selling the old one, only to leave it languishing next to the barn for 30 years, after having been through several late model trucks in the meantime. So when someone like Dylan McCool gets hold of something cool like this Mercury Marauder, and then brings it back to life, we’ve got to like that. Check this one out and let us know what you think. On paper it has all the right stuff to make a really good road trip machine. Will it run well enough though? Video Description: This 1965 Chevy Mercury Marauder has been left abandoned for 27 years, but today we attempt to make it run and drive for the first time in nearly three decades. It’s a 390 big block with all the great options; think it’ll come back to life? The post Why Was This Mercury ABANDONED For 27 YEARS? Will This Mercury Marauder Run and Drive Again? appeared first on BangShift.com. View the full article
  4. Tommy Lee Byrd has been busy in 2026, and man are we loving the content. The video below features some really cool factory race cars, rare muscle cars, and his favorite hidden jems from the Kissimmee Florida Mecum Auction. This one is special, and in an age where we see no shortage of car auctions it still amazes me what kind of machines these auctions find and are able to roll across the auction block. It’s like going to a museum when you attend some of these sales, and this one here is no exception. Just look at these epic machines. Video Description: Mecum Kissimmee is one of the biggest collector car auctions in the world, and there are tons of great exotic cars, rare muscle cars and wild combinations. I picked out 25 of the coolest survivors, vintage race cars and rare American cars to showcase. 17. NHRA Pro Stock star and multi-time Factory Stock Showdown world champion Aaron Stanfield added another significant accomplishment to his résumé Saturday night when he won the $150,000-to-win Drag Illustrated World Series of Pro Mod (WSOPM) presented by Red Line Oil at Bradenton Motorsports Park. The final round was decided by just .003 seconds as Stanfield drove around newly crowned 2025/2026 Drag Illustrated Winter Series presented by J&A Service champion Peter Norton in a side-by-side race. “All these racers are great racers – they are some of the baddest racers our sport has to offer,” said Stanfield, who made his Pro Mod debut in December. “It’s been cool to mix it up with them, and it’s unbelievable we’re gonna park it in the winner’s circle.” Reigning WSOPM event champion Steve King didn’t qualify for this year’s 32-car field, but he won the Outlaw Light Beer Wild Card Shootout for non-qualifiers. WSOPM victories also went to Fletcher Cox in Pro 10.5, Russell Stone in True 10.5, Chris Scarlata in Lil Gangstas, Mitch Kalitta in Super Pro, Mark Horton in 6.50 Index, Dean Thompson in 7.50 Index, Rashad Jones in 4.60 Bikes, and Cameron Rich in Jr. Dragster. PRO MOD Aaron Stanfield has won in numerous classes on the NHRA’s biggest stages, but prior to the DI Winter Series, he’d never raced a Pro Mod. Stanfield drove like a veteran in the class, though, at the third and final race of the Winter Series, the World Series of Pro Mod. After driving a screw-blown Elite Motorsports Camaro at the first two races, the Snowbird Outlaw Nationals and the U.S. Street Nationals, he came into WSOPM behind the wheel of a Harts Charger-boosted ’69 Camaro out of the Scott Tidwell Racing camp through a collaborative effort including Elite, Tidwell, and Modern Racing. Stanfield qualified No. 8 in the field, marking the first time he qualified in a Winter Series race. In the first-round chip draw, he drew Snowbirds runner-up and Winter Series championship contender Sidnei Frigo. Stanfield left first and posted a 3.879 at 200.98 to get the win over Frigo and his 4.044. He stepped up in the second round over Greg Blevins Jr., as he left first again and laid down a 3.651 at 209.43 to defeat Blevins and his 4.405. Stanfield met his toughest starting-line opponent, past PDRA Pro Boost world champion Tommy D’Aprile, in the quarterfinals. Still, Stanfield moved first and pedaled his way to a 4.033 at 193.65 to hold off D’Aprile’s 4.335. “It was definitely a roller coaster of emotions,” Stanfield said. “I feel like I did a decent enough job to win. It was pretty wild. Today was literally the first day I’ve ever pedaled a Pro Mod car. We were able to do it good enough to turn on two win lights doing it. Hats off to the whole Scott Tidwell camp and all these guys working on this car – Spencer, Travis, and a big shout out to Chris Terry. He did a heck of a job this weekend.” Stanfield drew 2024 No Prep Kings champion Shawn “Murder Nova” Ellington in the semifinal chip draw. Ellington lost oil pressure after the burnout and shut the car off, sending Stanfield down the track on a single. He rolled to a 3.614 at 210.37 to advance to the $150,000 final round against newly crowned DI Winter Series presented by J&A Service champion Peter Norton. The final round saw Stanfield leave second for the first time all day, though only by six thousandths of a second. He reached the finish line first, though, as his 3.576 at 210.83 put him there ahead of Norton and his 3.585 at 210.57 by just three thousandths of a second. “In heads-up racing, I don’t look over, but I could see him in my peripheral vision,” Stanfield said. “I could tell it was extremely close, but my eyes went straight for the win light and it came on. I don’t get excited in the car too much, but I was pretty pumped up that time.” The WSOPM victory now joins a long list of accomplishments that includes NHRA national event wins in five different professional and sportsman classes, as well as three Factory Stock Showdown world championships. “It absolutely goes up towards the top of the list,” Stanfield said. “I’ve never raced Pro Mod. This is the first event I’ve ever qualified for, and it’s incredible. Number one, it’s incredible that Richard Freeman let me drive a Pro Mod knowing that I’ve never raced one before. But Drag Illustrated and Wes Buck have done such a great job of making this ‘the’ event. I remember watching Erica [Enders] at this race last year, and I was like, ‘Man, I would really like to do that.’ It’s cool to have the opportunity and people to be able to do it. I’m just very blessed.” Norton, Stanfield’s final-round opponent, secured the 2025/2026 Winter Series points championship the round prior when he defeated Randy Weatherford in a winner-take-all matchup. Piloting his Harts-Charger-equipped, Hurricane Motorsports ’69 Camaro, Norton used a .011 reaction time and 3.608-second pass to outrun Weatherford, who got loose and slowed to a 4.877. Norton, a tractor pulling veteran, was picked up at the top end after the victory and given a police escort back up the track, where he was presented with the crystal trophy awarded to the points champion. Norton also received a $25,000 championship bonus. “It’s surreal,” Norton said of the experience. “You look down here, you look at all these fans. I mean, you come through here burning the tires off and people standing around you. It’s the stuff you watch on TV. It’s the stuff you dream about as any motorsport you want to do.” The moment came as a surprise to many. Facing off against the best drivers in the world, Norton was arguably the most inexperienced Pro Mod driver on the property, having just bought his car from Jeff Rudolf last November. He quickly showed promise throughout the Winter Series, however, earning the DIWS Rookie of the Year award during Friday night’s first-round chip draw. “I just wanted to come in and race, have a good time, and get some experience in the car,” said Norton. “I knew all these people that I’ve seen all over the internet, YouTube, watching drag racing. Some of these people have become my friends. It’s just a family environment. I really enjoy it. I didn’t know what to expect and it’s obviously exceeded any expectation I could have.” Still, Norton needed a lot of breaks to fall his way en route to a championship. He entered the World Series tenth in points, but when three of the top six drivers in points – including leader Jason Harris – lost in the first round, it opened the door. When “Stevie Fast” Jackson and Eric Gustafson, who each took possession of the points lead during eliminations, lost over the next two rounds, Norton knew he truly had a shot, leading to the final obstacle in Weatherford. “There was excitement and nervousness both,” Norton admitted. “As we were going rounds, I just needed to do my job. I knew the team was going to do their job. I knew (tuner) Rickie [Jones] was going to give me a good tune to get the car down the track. I knew the car was good. I needed to make sure Peter Norton did his job and crushed the tree.” WILD CARD SHOOTOUT When reigning WSOPM winner Steve King just missed out on qualifying for the main 32-car Pro Mod field, his chances at returning to the WSOPM Winner’s Circle didn’t end. Thanks to the Outlaw Light Beer Wild Card Shootout, a separate five-round race for the drivers who didn’t qualify, he got to race on Saturday. King, in Gene Pilot’s screw-blown “Savage 3.0” Corvette defeated Bo Butner, Frank Falter IV, and Robert Costa before going red by .002 seconds to Luis de Leon in the semifinals. When de Leon bypassed the scales, King was reinstated. King made the most of his second chance in the second-chance race, leaving first against 2023 WSOPM Second-Chance Shootout winner Melanie Salemi in the $15,000 final round and charging to a 3.611 at 207.27. Salemi slowed to a 4.336 at 121.10. “We’re happy with the win,” said King, who gave a shoutout to the Salemi family and their G-Force Race Cars and Resolution Racing Services. “Jon [Salemi] gave us a great car all weekend. Came up a little short on the A-feature to get into the main race, and those guys are lucky we didn’t get in there because we made some good runs today in the heat. During the night time sessions we’re not picking up like we need to, but during the day this car can run with any car here. A little semifinal round action there – I kind of feel a little bit down on that episode – I did red light but he bypassed the scales. I mean, how often do you get a buy-back round in Pro Mod racing? “We had to run our teammate in the finals, and those guys were over here in the semis thrashing – all their guys, all my guys, we had the motor tore apart in a million pieces. We want both team cars in the final, which we ended up with.” PRO 10.5 Super Bowl champion Fletcher Cox, who jumped behind the wheel of his nitrous-assisted “Training Day” ’69 Camaro after retiring from a 12-season career with the Philadelphia Eagles, went into WSOPM with a shot at the Winter Series Pro 10.5 championship. Led by multi-talented tuner Phil Shuler, Cox performed under pressure and secured both the championship and the $25,000 WSOPM Pro 10.5 event win. Cox qualified No. 2 and set low E.T. of the opening round of eliminations, which also stood for low E.T. of eliminations. He left the starting line first every time, including the side-by-side 3.91-second race over Tim Partin in the semifinals that secured the championship, as well as the final round over fellow title contender Joel Wensley Jr. Cox ran a 3.928 at 190.78 to Wensley’s 3.973 at 192.85. “I think the biggest thing about the Winter Series races is they bring the best out in you,” said Cox, who earned his first career win in PDRA Pro Street last season. “I look at it as, the first race we came here and went rounds. Second race, I don’t know what happened or what I was thinking. I went .400 on the tree and was the joke of the weekend. But the focus was to come here and win, knowing that we had a chance to win a championship. When ‘Training Day’ shows up, and this team that Phil Shuler and myself put together, we’ve got a chance to win. That was the most important part.” TRUE 10.5 After reaching the True 10.5 final round at the Winter Series-opening Snowbird Outlaw Nationals, Russell Stone broke through to get the $40,000 win at WSOPM. Driving his screw-blown ’69 Camaro, Stone set low E.T. in two of the five rounds and took the tree on a semifinal bye run to meet Bill Lutz in the final round. Lutz was shut off on the starting line because his screw-blown ’67 Camaro was leaking fluid. Starting line officials then directed Stone to take the tree, and he coasted to a 15.315 at 43.44 to get the win. “I went up to stage and they were pointing at me,” Stone said. “I didn’t know if they were telling me I was broke or he was broke. I didn’t know what was going on. I killed the car and I told them I would wait on him, but apparently he had oil everywhere and got out of the car, so that was the end of it. But I was going to do the right thing and give him time if he needed time. I don’t like winning like that.” INDEX CLASSES Chris Scarlata doubled up in the Strange Engineering Lil Gangstas Championship Series presented by Melling Performance, securing the Winter Series championship and getting the event win. He drove his ’70 Nova to the final-round win over Breanna Edwards in her ’84 Buick Regal. Carthage, Mississippi’s Rashad Jones dominated 4.60 Bikes, where he qualified No. 1 aboard his ’89 Suzuki and went on to run a 4.608 to defeat Bob Foster and his 4.625 in the final round. Mitch Kalitta, son of two-time and reigning NHRA Top Fuel world champion Doug Kalitta, earned his first career win in Super Pro behind the wheel of past NHRA Pro Stock world champion Bo Butner’s ’20 Miller dragster. His six-round path to the winner’s circle included a perfect .000 reaction time in the third round and a 4.404 on a 4.40 dial-in in the final round over Corky Markwart’s 4.734 on a 4.73 dial-in. It was Kalitta’s .007 reaction time that gave him the win. The 6.50 Index final round was over on the starting line when Pat Nanney went red by .006 seconds, handing the win to Mark Horton in his ’82 Camaro. Horton ran a 6.534. Sarasota’s own Dean Thompson raced to the win in 7.50 Index driving his ’72 Nova. He ran a 7.540 to runner-up Matt Tritsch’s too-quick 7.478. Cameron Rich, son of BMP track prep specialist Wade Rich, picked up his latest Jr. Dragster victory with a final-round win over Cash Mattingly. Both drivers broke out, but Rich was closer to the 7.90 index with his 7.883. Stanfield and the other WSOPM victors will be recognized in Drag Illustrated Issue #200, the WSOPM Issue, in May/June. 25. Drag Illustrated Winter Series presented by J&A Service championship contender Eric Gustafson added 32 points to his tally Friday night when he locked down the No. 1 qualifier position at the Winter Series finale, the Drag Illustrated World Series of Pro Mod presented by Red Line Oil. In the first of three Friday qualifying sessions at Bradenton Motorsports Park, Gustafson threw down a 3.553-second pass at 211.16 mph to lead the second-quickest 32-car field in eighth-mile Pro Mod history. Gustafson went into the World Series of Pro Mod ranked third in Winter Series points standings after consistent late round finishes at the Snowbird Outlaw Nationals and the U.S. Street Nationals in his ProCharged Coast Packing Company “Lard Machine” ’69 Camaro. Gustafson’s combination was dealt a weight penalty after the last race, but tuner and teammate Jason Lee and the team went to work and picked up where they left off by qualifying No. 1. Gustafson earned a $10,000 Low Qualifier Bonus from Jerry Bickel Race Cars, and he ended up drawing a No. 16 chip in the random chip drawing. That means he’ll be in the final pair of the opening round of eliminations on Saturday morning. He’ll face Travis “The Carolina Kid” Harvey. “You never know when you’ll be No. 1 in anything ever again,” said Gustafson, the 2020 NMCA Xtreme Pro Mod champion. “For me, it’s important. I wanted to recognize my team as well, and had Jason [Lee] and Cam [Hensley] come up for that picture. They’re the guys who help make this thing run. I’m just lucky enough to let go of a button and have a good time.” Winter Series points leader Jason Harris qualified second in his Harts Charger-boosted “Party Time” ’69 Camaro for the second consecutive race after qualifying No. 1 and winning the Snowbirds. He missed the top spot by just two thousandths with his 3.555 at 211.26. He’ll line up against Pro Mod newcomer Greg Blevins Jr. in the first round. “We definitely have a fast car; I think we proved that point in the first and second race,” Harris said. “And losing No. 1 by four thousandths – two thou this race, two thou last race – it’s just part of the way this game goes. I think right now the chip draw throws it all out the window. Once you’re in, you’re in, and all these guys can win. You’ve just got to do the best you can. Tomorrow the weather might change and change your tune-up. But I’m pretty confident going in. I know nobody here wants to draw me, so that gives me a little confidence going in.” Spencer Hyde, the 2025 NHRA Rookie of the Year, qualified third behind the wheel of the screw-blown Tidwell Nesloney Racing ’69 Camaro. Both Hyde and the car have history in the Winter Series. Hyde won the 2023 edition of the WSOPM before getting into nitro racing, including a full 2025 campaign in NHRA Funny Car. He didn’t compete in the Snowbirds, but when reigning Winter Series champion Ken Quartuccio took a step back from driving the Tidwell/Nesloney Camaro to focus on business opportunities, Hyde got the call to drive the championship-winning car at the final two Winter Series races. He made the most of the opportunity, laying down a 3.560 at 205.16. “Making it down all five runs is definitely something that you can take into race day with some confidence in the car, and my lights were pretty decent all five runs,” said Hyde, who will take on fellow Canadian Kenny Lang in the opening round. “Going in there, driving well, and having a good hot rod is a good recipe for race day. “To think that I wasn’t even going to race this (Winter Series) starting off, I missed the first race. When Ken Q and Scott Tidwell called me and said, ‘Hey, we want you to fill,’ I jumped at it right away. It’s pretty exciting to jump into the car that won [the championship] last year. Any time you can jump into a high-level car like that’s got Steve Petty on the keyboard, you’re in good hands. You’ve just got to show up and do your job. It does add some extra pressure, because you’re expected to be as good as they are, and they’re the best.” Johnny Camp, who qualified No. 1 at the 2023 WSOPM, ended up fourth in his Winter Series return with a 3.566 at 210.73 in his ProCharged “Hells Bells” ’69 Camaro. Stevie “Fast” Jackson, ranked No. 2 in Winter Series points after winning the U.S. Street Nationals, qualified fifth driving Dave and Jeff Pierce’s screw-blown M&M Transmission/Motion Raceworks “Purple Heart” ’68 Firebird. Past No Prep Kings winner Robin Roberts locked down the No. 32 spot with a 3.602 at 211.00. The DI Winter Series also presented a number of first-time special awards. Peter Norton won Rookie of the Year honors, Derek Menholt’s PRC-built ’19 Corvette won the Best Engineered Car, Jason Harris’s “Party Time” Harold Denton tribute ’69 Camaro won Best Appearing Car, and Kallee Mills’ team won the Best Appearing Crew award. The drivers who didn’t qualify for the main 32-car race will have the opportunity to compete in the Outlaw Light Beer Wild Card Shootout, a full five-round race using a traditional ladder and paying $15,000 to win. Pro Mod First-Round Pairings: Rian Hayward vs. Joey Martin, Adriano Kayayan vs. Kye Kelley, Spencer Hyde vs. Kenny Lang, Victor Alvarez vs. Jacob McNeal, Mike Decker Jr. vs. Robin Roberts, Kallee Mills vs. Billy Banaka, Randy Weatherford vs. Mike Bowman, Aaron Stanfield vs. Sidnei Frigo, Johnny Camp vs. Tommy D’Aprile, Ned Dunphy vs. Jason Lee, Lyle Barnett vs. Peter Norton, Ryan Martin vs. Shawn Ellington, Steve Jackson vs. Raymond Matos, Jason Harris vs. Greg Blevins Jr., Derek Menholt vs. Ethan Steding, Eric Gustafson vs. Travis Harvey.
