Hyundai Santa Fe Sport Destroyed by Fire After Safety Recall Was Ignored
A Preventable OutcomeRegardless of how severe or minor a recall may seem, car owners should comply, as safety can be at stake. One Hyundai owner learned this the hard way after his 2013 Santa Fe Sport caught fire when a recall addressing a fire risk was ignored. According to a report by WESH 2 News, the vehicle’s owner, Edgar Franceschi, was parked in Longwood, Florida, when the fire broke out. Franceschi escaped unharmed, but his Hyundai SUV was not as fortunate and was ultimately declared a total loss. The vehicle was part of a safety recall in 2023 affecting more than 3.3 million vehicles – including certain Kia models – due to a faulty anti-lock braking system. Cause of the FireThe recall stated that the ABS in affected vehicles could leak brake fluid and cause an electrical short, even when the vehicle is parked, as in Franceschi’s case. The proposed remedy involved replacing the ABS module fuse free of charge. Although Franceschi was notified about the recall, he did not bring his Hyundai in, believing a brake-related issue wouldn’t be catastrophic. “You wouldn’t expect a brake issue to lead to a massive fire like that,” he said. What’s worse is the insurance claim, which could face delays – or even potential disapproval - after Franceschi openly admitted that he did not act on the recall notice. While the circumstances are unfortunate, it serves as a costly reminder to all car owners that safety recalls should never be ignored. Sure, recalls are often difficult to predict, particularly when they stem from issues involving third-party suppliers. However, one of the few proactive steps buyers can take is to research which automakers tend to issue frequent recalls. Last year, Ford led the list with 153 recalls, affecting over 12 million units. Hyundai Millions Still at RiskThe report also noted that only 29 percent and 32 percent of affected Hyundai and Kia owners, respectively, addressed the recall, meaning more than a million vehicles with a similar fire risk may still be on the road. As such, Michael Brooks of the Center for Auto Safety called for more aggressive recall notifications. So far this year, Hyundai has issued at least three recalls, including one affecting more than 570,000 Palisades from the 2020–2025 model years. The recall involves potentially faulty third-row side curtain airbags that could deploy improperly, increasing the risk of injury in a crash. Mercedes-Benz Teases New 'Extreme' AMG CLE Mythos
Enter the MythosThe world of luxury cars sells itself on the image of distinction and desire, where a car's level of perceived prestige can be a selling point in itself. In an effort to one-up its rivals, in 2022, Mercedes launched the Mythos Series; a sub-brand it positions higher than its Maybach ultra-luxury series of vehicles. At the time, Mercedes said that its Mythos Series models would be very low-volume vehicles, that "will be made available exclusively to the most dedicated enthusiasts and collectors of Mercedes-Benz." The first Mythos model was the SL-based Mercedes-AMG PureSpeed. Powered by a 576-horsepower 4-liter V8 and featuring a Formula 1-inspired design, its 250-unit run was about 25 units less than the ultra-exclusive Mercedes-AMG ONE hypercar. However, Mercedes is gearing up to launch a new Mythos that may be stack up to be the ultimate AMG sports-coupe ever made. Mercedes-Benz View the 2 images of this gallery on the original article This 2-door is no ordinary AMGIn a new announcement published on January 27, Mercedes-Benz teased a new high-performance version of the CLE coupe that is likely to be much more desirable than any AMG to come out of Affalterbach. In a series of exterior photos, Mercedes showed off a prototype of the new vehicle, draped in black-and-white development camouflage, as it undergoes cold-weather testing in snowy Sweden near the Arctic Circle. Not many details are known about the car as of yet; however, the pictures that Mercedes has provided show that the new vehicle exhibits a much more aggressive, performance-focused approach to the otherwise stately CLE 53 AMG. Though it is camouflaged, the pictures reveal that AMG has added a much more aggressive front fascia, an updated rear end, wider wheel arches for fatter wheels, and, most notably, a prominent trunk-mounted rear wing. In its press release, Mercedes says that the "extreme model shows a kinship to the popular CLE, but promises an ever more uncompromising appearance," which it describes as leaving "a real statement on the road, underlined by a corresponding drive and corresponding driving performance." Mercedes-Benz View the 2 images of this gallery on the original article It may get the S-Class's cool, new V8 Though details are mum, a report from Autocar notes that the new Mythos version of this AMG-tuned CLE coupe is said to be powered by the same engine as the soon-to-be-unveiled S-Class sedan. Internally known as the M177, the twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 set to debut in the new posh sedan is said to be a significant upgrade from the V8 in the current S580. Not only does it have power figures of more than 530bhp and 550 lb ft of torque, but it also features a racing-inspired flat-plane crank for a raspier, higher-pitched soundtrack. Although theoretical power figures under the hood of the new CLE AMG Mythos are up in the air, the new engine is expected to make a major power boost over the current CLE 53 AMG, which makes 443 horsepower and 413 lb-ft of torque from a turbocharged 3-liter inline-six with hybrid assistance and an electric auxiliary compressor. Related: The World’s First All-Terrain Hypercar Was Designed Backwards, Starting With the Suspension Final ThoughtsMercedes says that more details about the new Mythos car will come later this year. Though the current CLE 53 AMG may be a "pretty penny" with an MSRP of $76,300, we should expect that this new Mythos edition will be quite the hot item, complete with a stratospheric price tag and ultra-limited numbers. Banks County Planning Commission Unanimously Recommends Approval For Return of Atlanta Dragway; One More Hearing Scheduled For Final Vote
The future of the former Atlanta Dragway took a major step forward this past Tuesday when the Banks County Planning Commission unanimously voted to recommend approval for the continued use of the historic property as a racetrack. The vote followed an emotional and packed public hearing that highlighted the track’s deep roots in North Georgia as well as its potential economic and community benefits if reopened. The application, which was submitted by the Banks County Board of Commissioners, included a summary explaining how the property has operated as a racetrack from 1975 until operations ceased around 2021. Planning staff explained that the conditional use application was initiated by the county to allow the property to return to its use as a racetrack while aligning it with modern zoning standards. Public comment opened with overwhelming support from residents, racers, business owners, and motorsports professionals from across Georgia and neighboring states. IHRA Chief Operating Officer Scott Woodruff spoke first and expressed encouragement about the opportunity to restore the racetrack. “I’m here from the IHRA and just really wanted to say we’re encouraged about the property possibly being rezoned for future use to help bring back the racetrack and safety to the area,” Woodruff said. “And obviously there’s a lot of passion in this room as we can all tell. So just want to say thank you very much and we intend to do good things if good things happen.” Much of the public testimony focused on the economic ripple effects the racetrack historically brought to Banks County. Speakers described packed hotels, busy restaurants, and thriving shopping centers during race weekends and major events. Louis Kellett, who traveled from Greenville, South Carolina to attend the meeting, noted that Atlanta Dragway has been a staple in Banks County for nearly 50 years. “It’ll take a lot of work to put it back together, but it can be done,” Kellett said. “When it opens back up, the restaurants are going to fill back up, hotels are going to fill back up. All these people that come to town eat, stay, and shop. It would be a big benefit for Banks County.” Brad Ocock presented data reinforcing those claims, including estimates from the Georgia Department of Tourism that states out-of-town visitors bring $98 to a local economy. If they spend the night, it’s $178 per day in the local economy, he explained to the Commissioners. “I put on the Northeast Georgia Swap Meet 12 times a year at the Atlanta Dragway. My swap meet brought about 25,000 people annually. The Southern Nationals brought between 30,000 and 50,000 annually. The NMCA race brought 8,000 people in annually. Bracket finals brought about 2,000 people annually. That’s only four organizations, not races,” Ocock stated. “It was about 95,000 people. At $98 per person per day, that’s a little over $9 million that they left in the local account. So that’s not counting overnight stays, that’s not counting all the other events that come here.” Many residents also spoke about the track’s cultural and personal significance. Ashley Hancock, who lives directly behind the racetrack, described the motorsports community as an extended family. “We are all like family,” Hancock said. “Just like the Banks County community is a family, we are a family. We all want to come back home. That’s what we want – to race, to see our family, to help the community.” Others emphasized the role the racetrack played in their early years of development and the important public safety aspect. Speakers noted that organized racing provides a legal, controlled environment that helps keep young drivers off the streets while promoting discipline, technical skills, and mentorship to teens and young adults. “We all talk about how we want to get kids off of iPads and video games. Having something like this close by definitely helps with that,” Kline Whitley, of Commerce, Georgia stated. “I can honestly say that I would not be the person that I am today without it. My dad found different ways to motivate me. Drag racing was the way that he found to motivate me to help me become a better person.” After the public comment period concluded, all speakers in favor and none in opposition, the Planning Commission closed the hearing. A motion was made and seconded to recommend approval of the application, passing unanimously by a 5-0 vote. The decision was met with applause from the packed room and overflow crowd outside. Commission members emphasized that their decision is only a recommendation, and that the final decision will rest with the Banks County Board of Commissioners. That vote is scheduled for Tuesday, February 10th at 6:30 p.m., at the same location. This story was originally published on February 7, 2026. Inside a Million-Dollar Car Collection With Zero Garage Queens
Say No to Garage QueensOne thing about car collectors is that they tend to avoid racking up mileage to preserve resale value. While some argue that minimizing wear and tear is the logical approach, that’s not the philosophy this enthusiast follows. Tim Burton, a.k.a. Shmee150, recently shared a tour of his collection after 16 years on YouTube, noting that his garage is far from being filled with “garage queens.” Burton revealed three new additions over the past year – all of them from the Prancing Horse. The lineup includes a Ferrari 458 Speciale, a 12Cilindri, and an SF90 XX Stradale. Both the 458 Speciale and the SF90 XX Stradale are track-oriented supercars built for the road, while the 12Cilindri serves as the successor to the 812 Superfast in Ferrari’s V12 lineage. This type of collection isn’t typically associated with another well-known car collector, Jay Leno, who has openly said he isn’t a fan of how the brand handles its sales process. Not Just Weekend ToysMost of Burton’s collection consists of European cars, including the McLaren 675LT Spider, which is the longest-owned vehicle in his garage. He noted that the supercar – essentially the long-wheelbase version with an open-roof configuration – costs about £1,000 (roughly $1,360 at current exchange rates) per year to service. His second-longest-owned car is the Aston Martin Vantage GT8, one of just 150 examples finished in the two-tone blue-and-orange paint scheme. All of his newer Ferraris, meanwhile, were purchased with the brand’s 7-year complimentary scheduled maintenance program. These include the SF90 Stradale, which he describes as “one of the best value-for-money supercars.” He also owns a 296 GTS and a Purosangue, finished in Blu Le Mans as a nod to his previous four-seat Ferraris – the FF and GTC4 Lusso. The British car collector and vlogger also owns a handful of American cars, including a Ford GT. His garage also houses a Ford Focus RS Heritage Edition and a Mustang Shelby GT500 – the most powerful iteration of the S550 generation. Shmee150/YouTube Supercars With a Job to DoOther cars featured include the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series, AMG GT Black Series, Aston Martin V8 Vantage Roadster, a Renault Clio, a Fiat 500 Abarth Ferrari Dealer Edition, an in-service Porsche 914, and a BMW M2, which is set to be sold soon. He also showcased his Zenvo TSR-S, a 1,177-horsepower hypercar that he has owned for three years. In 2025, Burton said his own fleet accumulated 34,300 miles, not including the additional 25,300 miles logged in loaner cars such as the BYD Seal. Looking ahead, Chevrolet’s most extreme C8 Corvette, the ZR1X, is set to join his garage, featuring a hybridized powertrain producing 1,250 horsepower. While there are additional future acquisitions he has yet to reveal, one thing is certain: he will enjoy them as intended. That commitment should be a treat for enthusiasts following his journey. The Dodge Viper Shooting Brake Concept That’s Becoming Real
The Dodge Viper has always been about raw power, drama, and intimidation, nothing more. But a new digital concept by 3D car designer Sebastian Simonsson reimagines an American supercar in a way no one saw coming. A first-generation Viper has been transformed into a sleek shooting brake using a mix of traditional sketching and AI-assisted rendering, and somehow, it works far better than anyone expected. While AI played a role in shaping the final visuals, and we also acknowledge AI-created images aren't necessarily art, the concept itself stems from a clear human vision. A Two-Door Viper Wagon That Somehow Works Instagram @mr.simonsson Shooting brakes are almost extinct nowadays, with basically just the CLA Shooting Brake left – but even that's a stretch on the definition. Regardless, shooting brakes have become some of the most desirable cars in history, from the Aston Martin Vanquish to the Ferrari FF and Volvo P1800 ES. On paper, turning a Dodge Viper into one sounds awkward at best. Yet, it turned out exquisite. Its extended roofline flows cleanly into the rear, giving the Viper a more practical silhouette without losing its muscular stance. And it retains everything that made us love the SRI Viper, from the three-spoke wheels to the vents in front of the doors, lack of door handles, side-exit exhaust tips, and hopefully its 8.0-liter V10 engine. Overall, thanks to its extended rear, dare we say, it looks more balanced than the standard Viper. Considering how valuable classic Vipers have become in today’s collector market, finding a donor car would be difficult, but not impossible. The Designer and Controversial Use of AI Instagram @mr.simonsson Sebastian Simonsson is not just another guy with a ChatGPT Pro subscription who posts non-stop designs. He has spent more than two decades in the automotive industry, working in high-end visualisation and marketing for brands such as Koenigsegg, along with several performance-focused projects across Europe. Speaking to Motor1, Simonsson explained that the project began with hand-drawn sketches before AI was used to refine the final images. The design itself, including the proportions and styling decisions, remained entirely his. He described his design language as "unmistakably Scandinavian," and it explains why the Viper shooting brake has such a restrained appearance. Viper and restraint in the same sentence – odd. Funding Has Already Started What started as a creative experiment quickly exploded across social media. The Viper shooting brake gathered hundreds of thousands of likes, thousands of shares, and a comment section filled with enthusiasm from car fans and industry insiders alike. Among those who took notice were Formula One world champion Jenson Button and Doug DeMuro’s Cars & Bids account. Most interesting of all, Simonsson has now confirmed in the comments that funding has already started to turn the concept into a real, physical car. Instagram @mr.simonsson Simonsson told Motor1 that individuals with thorough racing backgrounds, including some with firsthand experience working with the Viper platform, are involved in making the "Shooting Snake" a reality. While no timelines have been shared yet, the fact that the ball has begun to roll shows just how powerful social media can be. If this project is a success, it could spark renewed interest in shooting brakes altogether. After all, we have already seen exciting digital concepts like the Toyota GR GT shooting brake capture attention online. With creativity like this gaining traction, perhaps more brands will finally bring this beautiful body style back in a meaningful way, even if they're only one-off models. View the full article

Everything to Watch Out For in Toyota’s Two-Part RAV4 Super Bowl LX Ads
Going Two-for-OneOne of the biggest American events of the year, the National Football League (NFL) Super Bowl, is set to take place this weekend, and Toyota isn’t missing out. The Japanese marque is returning to the sporting event with two 30-second spots scheduled to air during the championship game between the New England Patriots and the Seattle Seahawks. The first film, titled “Superhero Belt,” centers on the Toyota RAV4, which is currently one of America’s best-selling vehicles, alongside the Ford F-150. The spot unfolds across two timelines. In the first, a grandfather drives his grandson in a 1997 RAV4 – the compact crossover’s second model year on sale in the U.S. Nearly three decades later, the roles are reversed, with the grandson now driving his grandfather in the all-new 2026 RAV4, which is offered exclusively as a hybrid. Bridging GenerationsThe hybridized RAV4 underscores Toyota’s multi-powertrain strategy, even as other automakers such as General Motors have doubled down on fully electric vehicles. As standard, the model pairs a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with electric motors, producing a combined 236 horsepower in all-wheel-drive (AWD) form, while the front-wheel-drive (FWD) version delivers 226 horsepower. It also adopts a more futuristic, EV-like design – something even casual viewers may notice during the commercial. Toyota’s second film, titled “Where Dreams Began,” subtly showcases models such as the Tundra, GR86, and the outgoing GR Supra, though the focus is on its roster of Team Toyota athletes. These include American multi-sport Paralympic athlete Oksana Masters and Bubba Wallace, the NASCAR driver of the #23 Toyota Camry XSE at 23XI Racing, co-owned by six-time NBA champion Michael Jordan. The spot also features Puka Nacua, who delivered a strong outing in this year’s playoffs alongside his Los Angeles Rams teammate and MVP Matthew Stafford, before losing to the Super Bowl-bound Seattle Seahawks. The film centers on a reflective theme, depicting each athlete in a conversation between their younger selves and who they have become today. Cars Take the FieldOther automakers will also appear during the NFL season finale. Volkswagen is set to feature the ID. Buzz, which, ironically, won't be sold in the U.S. for the 2026 model year. Cadillac will likewise make an appearance, using the spotlight to unveil its livery for its inaugural Formula 1 campaign. GM’s luxury brand will enter the grid as the series' 11th team this season, becoming the second American outfit alongside the Haas F1 Team, which has a technical partnership with Toyota Gazoo Racing. The Super Bowl LX is scheduled for Sunday, February 8, at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California. View the full article

Carmakers Rush to Remove Chinese Code Under New Federal Rules
U.S. Bans Chinese Software in Connected Cars, Industry Scrambles to ComplyIn a report from The Wall Street Journal, automakers are racing to strip Chinese-written code from internet-connected vehicles as sweeping U.S. national-security regulations take effect. Beginning March 17, carmakers must certify that core connected systems do not contain software developed in China or by Chinese companies. The rule targets cloud-connected features, including telematics, cameras, microphones, GPS systems, and advanced driver-assistance software. Hardware restrictions tied to connectivity components will follow in 2029. The regulation, issued by the Commerce Department’s Bureau of Industry and Security, is described by industry leaders as one of the most complex compliance challenges in decades. Carmakers must audit deeply layered supply chains where software often originates from subcontractors or joint ventures. While critical semiconductor sourcing can be traced, embedded code is more opaque. Some exemptions may be granted, and the Chinese code transferred to non-Chinese ownership before the deadline remains permissible, triggering restructuring across the supplier base. Zeekr A Major Disruption for U.S. Automakers and SuppliersThe implications for U.S.-based manufacturers are significant. Many vehicles rely on Chinese-developed middleware, connectivity modules, and cloud integration layers. Hardware substitution is difficult but manageable; software replacement is far more complex. Automotive code is typically bespoke, tightly integrated into vehicle architectures, and costly to rewrite or validate. Compliance timelines leave little margin for error. Potential partnerships could also be affected. Ford Motor Company has reportedly held discussions with BYD over next-generation hybrid technologies, a collaboration that may now face regulatory scrutiny. Meanwhile, General Motors appears to have anticipated the shift, having already instructed suppliers to phase out China-made parts by 2027. Even so, disentangling software dependencies presents a distinct technical hurdle compared with sourcing physical components. Nissan Mounting Political Pressure on Chinese Automotive PresenceThe software ban lands amid intensifying political resistance to Chinese automotive expansion in the U.S. market. National dealership groups have recently urged federal authorities to block Chinese automakers from entering or expanding within the country, citing economic and security concerns. The connected-vehicle rule reinforces that stance by limiting not only vehicles built in China but also any connected car produced by China-controlled companies, regardless of assembly location. With Chinese cellular-module suppliers commanding an overwhelming share of the global market, the rule strikes at a critical chokepoint in modern vehicle architecture. Comparisons have been drawn to U.S. dependence on rare earth minerals and past scrutiny of Chinese telecommunications firms. For now, the regulation may function as a de facto barrier to Chinese-branded vehicles in America. Whether it becomes a permanent wall or a temporary geopolitical lever will depend on how trade policy and enforcement evolve in the coming years. Buick View the full article

The 5 cheapest gas stations in New York
Gas prices in New York are high in most metro areas, but that’s normal. Drivers in dense cities and in tourist destinations know gas prices tend to trend higher than average. If you’re looking for cheap gas in New York, we’ve found it - but there’s a bit of a catch. Cheap gas can be had, there’s no doubt, but all of the cheapest gas stations are likely out of your way. Save for a few exceptions - say, a weekend away from the city - we doubt you will encounter these gas stations on your daily commute. Many of them have something unique in common, too. Today’s price of $2.41 is a significant outlier for Long Island, where the average typically hovers above $2.75. It’s an even larger deal when you consider the average price for all of New York is around $3 per gallon today. Tesla Submits Fresh Roadster Trademark Filings After Years of Delays
Tesla Files Two New Roadster Trademarks in the U.S.Tesla has filed two new trademark applications for the long-delayed Roadster. The filings were submitted to the United States Patent and Trademark Office on February 3, 2026. One covers a redesigned “ROADSTER” wordmark. The other shows a stylized silhouette that appears to preview the car’s updated shape. The wordmark uses a sharp, angular font with segmented lettering, suggesting a high-performance focus. The second filing is more revealing. It features a sleek profile composed of three flowing curved lines. The application describes it as a triangle design formed by curved elements. Both filings were made on an intent-to-use basis, meaning Tesla has not yet used the logos commercially but plans to do so. View the 2 images of this gallery on the original article Announced in 2017, but Still Has Not ArrivedTesla first unveiled the second-generation Roadster in November 2017. It was shown alongside the Semi truck. At the time, Elon Musk said the Roadster would launch in 2020 with a $200,000 starting price. He also claimed a top speed of more than 250 mph and extreme acceleration figures that would rival hypercars. With power figures like that, one might be concerned about the car's safety features, but Musk reiterated that they are not a top priority for the car. Those targets were never met. The Roadster has missed multiple timelines over the past eight years. Tesla recently stated in its earnings report that preparations for production in North America are ongoing. Musk has also said a Roadster 2 demo event will take place, but it has yet to happen. The compact crossover is spotlighted through a playful concept featuring a fictional “dip seat,” pitched as a solution for hauling chips and dip on game day. The press release doesn’t explicitly confirm that Nissan has a spot for the upcoming NFL championship game, though the Japanese marque appears to be capitalizing on the surrounding hype through a collaboration with Canadian chef and actor Matty Matheson, who stars in the FX series The Bear. In the campaign, Matheson loads his fictional dip seat – packed with chips – into the Rogue before race car driver and Gran Turismo actress Emelia Hartford takes the vehicle for a spin. Making a Case for the Dip SeatAccording to Nissan, the concept was intended to highlight how its engineering team designed the rear seats to help keep cargo secure. “With the 2026 Rogue, we set out to design an SUV that fits real life – families, adventures, errands, and yes, even gameday traditions,” said Nissan Chief Marketing Officer Allyson Witherspoon. For the 2026 model year, the most notable update is the new Dark Armor trim, which gives the vehicle a more blacked-out styling package. Meanwhile, its direct rival, the Toyota RAV4, is now an all-hybrid lineup for the MY2026. The RAV4 also has its own Super Bowl ad, which features the first-generation model – introduced in the U.S. in 1996 – and the latest version, powered by a 2.5-liter hybrid setup with electric motors, producing up to 236 horsepower in all-wheel-drive (AWD) form. In comparison to the Rogue, the Nissan compact crossover tops at 201 horsepower from a 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine. Nissan USA/YouTube Chips, Jokes, and a Free RogueHowever, the model is set to receive a plug-in hybrid variant later this year, meaning any added exposure Nissan can generate – such as this dip seat–themed campaign – may help build anticipation. It is worth noting, though, that the PHEV version will be a rebadged Mitsubishi Outlander, with a few styling tweaks to give it a Nissan identity. In addition to Matheson’s jokes and Hartford's driving, the campaign offers the chance to win a 2026 Nissan Rogue Platinum AWD through the brand’s official website. The sweepstakes is open to eligible U.S. and Canadian residents, with entries accepted through February 12. Those who aren’t lucky enough to win can still pick up the Rogue starting at $29,090, excluding destination fees. After a $26 Billion Hit, Stellantis Shifts Focus Back to What Buyers Want
Stellantis took a €22.2 billion ($26.25 billion) write-down last year, tied largely to scaling back electric vehicle programs. But buried inside the numbers is a much bigger message: the company openly acknowledged it moved faster than customers were ready to follow. According to Stellantis and Reuters, the automaker is now rebuilding its strategy around real-world demand rather than aggressive electrification targets. Demand, or Lack Thereof, Is Driving The Company's Reset Stellantis CEO Antonio Filosa was unusually direct in Stellantis’s announcement, saying the company “over-estimated the pace of the energy transition” and allowed their pre-planned strategy to overpower what buyers actually want. The result was billions written off in canceled EV products, impaired electric platforms, and downsized battery operations. Keep in mind, Stellantis had once aimed for electric vehicles to make up 50% of U.S. sales and all European sales by 2030, despite EV adoption in America sitting at 7%. That disconnect is now being corrected, with Stellantis shifting capital back toward hybrids and internal combustion models that align more closely with consumer wants. And it seems other automakers have the same idea in mind, with even Porsche rumored to abandon the all-electric 718. To add fuel to the fire, there are countless players in the EV segment nowadays, with Chinese automakers seeming to lead the pack. Pursuing a profitable full-electric approach has become more difficult than ever before. Trucks, V8s, and Hybrids Are Back at the Center Ram The pivot is the most prevalent in North America. Stellantis is canceling its planned electric Ram 1500 pickup while bringing back the HEMI V8 to the Ram lineup and expanding hybrid options across multiple brands. The company has also rolled out five new vehicles alongside 19 additional product actions aimed squarely at markets where traditional drivetrains still dominate. That doesn’t mean EVs are disappearing. Stellantis says it will continue investing in electrification, just at a pace shaped by what customers are actually buying. Ford is taking a similar demand-first approach, pressing ahead with what they think customers want: an affordable electric truck. The Auto Industry Is Finally Recalibrating Jeep Stellantis isn't the only automaker to face EV-related write-downs like this. Ford experienced a $19.5 billion write-down, and GM incurred a $6 billion hit in 2025, too. What makes Stellantis different is its bluntness. The company is effectively admitting that the transition was pushed ahead of real consumer readiness, especially in a region like North America, where the ICE-powered F-Series pickup reigns as the best-selling vehicle. If Stellantis's predictions become true, profitability in the next decade won’t come from forcing buyers into electric vehicles, but from giving them what they want. View the full article

Judge Lets Lawsuit Claiming Tesla Copied Blade Runner Move Forward
A federal judge in Los Angeles has showed that Tesla and CEO Elon Musk are unlikely to get an early dismissal of a copyright lawsuit tied to the film Blade Runner 2049, keeping the case alive as it moves forward in court. The dispute centers on allegations that Tesla’s marketing for its robotaxi ambitions leaned too heavily on the movie’s distinctive visual language, with the studio behind the film claiming its intellectual property was copied without permission. Related: Production-Ready Tesla Cybercab Hits Showroom Floor In San Jose Tesla View the 2 images of this gallery on the original article What The Lawsuit AllegesThe plaintiff, Alcon Entertainment, alleges that Tesla and Musk used imagery that echoed Blade Runner 2049 during a 2024 event used to promote Tesla’s Cybercab concept, and that the material was generated in a way that still replicated the film’s protectable look and feel. The core of the claim is not that Tesla showed film clips, but that the presentation allegedly recreated recognizable visual elements associated with the movie’s scenes and style, after a licensing request was declined. The defendants have argued the case should be dismissed, including on fair use grounds, but the judge’s tentative view is that the complaint plausibly states a claim at this stage and that fair use is typically too fact dependent to resolve before evidence is developed. Related: Production Tesla Cybercab Hits Public Roads Again, But It Still Has A Driver What The Judge Said And What Happens NextAccording to the ruling described in coverage, the judge said Alcon’s theory of infringement is valid and plausible enough to proceed, which means Tesla and Musk may have to defend their creative choices through litigation rather than ending the case quickly. A tentative ruling is not a final judgment on liability, but it is an important procedural step because it suggests the court sees enough substance in the allegations to justify discovery and further motion practice. Why It Matters For Tesla Right NowThis lawsuit lands during a period when Tesla is juggling product strategy questions and reputational pressure on multiple fronts, from design and regulation issues, to the ongoing debate about where the legacy lineup. Legal outcomes do not directly change vehicle engineering, but they can shape how aggressively a company markets future products, especially when those campaigns borrow from well known cultural reference points. At the same time, Tesla continues to face and sometimes defeat other legal claims tied to vehicle use. View the full article

Waymo Uses Remote Workers in the Philippines to Assist Its Self-Driving Cars
Autonomous Tech is Being Grilled — AgainRecently, the Senate held a hearing regarding the future of autonomous vehicles with Waymo and Tesla. It started out with the two companies urging the Government to pass regulations to boost autonomous mobility in the country. However, it ended up becoming a bit of a grilling session. Instead of coming up with some kind of resolve, Waymo and Tesla were questioned over safety, liability, and China. Of course, the two companies defended their decisions and actions, emphasizing that the U.S will be left behind by China in autonomous driving tech if there is no regulatory framework behind it. Steven Paul Waymo's 'reliance' on Overseas Products and PeopleThe Waymo Ojai is a purpose-built autonomous taxi made in cooperation with Geely subsidiary, Zeekr. It's already drawing flack from the Government, as Zeekr is a Chinese automaker. The law states that no vehicle with autonomous or self-driving tech from China cannot be imported to America. Waymo says the Ojai, while built by a Chinese company, uses tech developed stateside. But there were bigger questions about the use of remote workers abroad. When asked about human intervention in cases where the vehicle is stuck in a tricky situation, the company admitted that it uses operators based in the Philippines to resolve it. The answer was said to raise alarm bells during the hearing. https://youtube.com/shorts/GH0X88-MVw4?si=Og9nuZuvJpxpXnBY Waymo Alleged Safety CompromisesThe Senate didn't like the idea of vehicles being 'controlled remotely' from thousands of miles away. However, Waymo pointed out that the its cars are not under direct control of the operators, and it's the on-board software that sorts everything out. Mauricio Peña, the Waymo’s chief safety officer, told the panel that the Filipino operators merely 'provide guidance' and 'they do not remotely drive the vehicles.' One can think of it as remote troubleshooting. So, if you were expecting someone in Manila with a sim rig driving an unmanned taxi in San Francisco, we're sorry to disappoint. It's safe to assume that all of its robotaxis use actual software and not a dystopian version of a Mechanical Turk. Still, the overseas assistance raised several concerns to the panel. The Senate pointed out potential cybersecurity and latency issues, as well as the qualifications of said remote operators. On that note, Waymo did say that there are remote operators based in the U.S, but failed to provide an exact ratio of foreign to domestic workers. And no, they're not disguised as the front seats, either. Getty Recent IncidentsWaymo has had its fair share of untoward incidents in the couple of months. There were several reported instances of the robotaxi driving around school buses while unloading, and a three of them were involved in an odd standoff in a San Francisco cul-de-sac. The autonomous taxis also froze during a blackout in the city last December. Then, just a few weeks ago, one of the cars struck a child in a school zone. Thankfully, the child survived with minor injuries, and NHTSA is currently investigating the matter. Most recently, a Waymo Ojai slammed into a row of parked cars near the Dodger Stadium. There were no reported passengers in the vehicle at the time. Waymo View the full article

GM Pours $30 Million Into Worker Training Ahead of Three Vehicle Launches
General Motors is putting $30 million into workforce training at its Fairfax Assembly plant in Kansas City as it prepares for three major vehicle launches that will span both electric and gas powertrains. GM says the goal is to keep the plant competitive through a fast transition period, with training aimed at protecting quality and flexibility as the lineup changes. Workforce Training Tied Directly To Three ModelsGM says Fairfax is currently producing the Chevrolet Bolt, and that the plant will soon add the gas powered Chevrolet Equinox, followed by a next generation Buick compact SUV. The company is positioning the launch cadence as a stress test for modern manufacturing, because switching between EV and internal combustion production requires new processes, new safety routines, and tighter cross training to avoid slowdowns during changeovers. GM is also framing this investment as additive to a broader manufacturing push, noting it comes on top of nearly $5.5 billion in recent manufacturing investments. General Motors What The $30 Million Is Meant To DoGM says the Fairfax funding targets three categories, upskilling employees for more advanced roles as technology changes, cross training that supports flexibility between EV and ICE production, and expanded safety, quality, and launch readiness training. The emphasis is less about buying new machines and more about ensuring teams can run new processes from day one, since early production is where delays and quality issues can become expensive and hard to reverse. GM also highlighted the plant’s generational workforce, noting that many employees and families have built long careers there, with plant director Michael Youngs described as a third generation GM employee who began at Fairfax and now leads the upcoming launches. Why GM Is Leaning Into The Ownership Experience NarrativeAlthough the announcement is about training, it also sits inside a broader GM strategy where software features and customer experience increasingly shape how new models are marketed and supported after launch. At the same time, GM continues to face the reality that launch execution still matters most when problems appear in the field, which is why quality control remains central to plant investments. This Lancer Evo VI Comes Straight From Mitsubishi’s Golden Age—and It’s for Sale
Before Crossovers Took OverWhile Mitsubishi today focuses on vehicles suited for daily driving, the Japanese marque was once a championship-winning force in the world of rally racing. Perhaps the model that best represents that era is the Lancer Evolution VI, and one is currently up for grabs on Cars & Bids. The Lancer Evo VI is the final generation of the Evolution lineup to be homologated under Group A regulations, before the more flexible WRC rules took over in 2001. That shift gave rise to the Evo VII, which remained race-ready but grew heavier and more livable as a daily driver. This particular 1999 model-year example is the GSR variant, the more performance-oriented trim compared to the RS, with the Tommi Mäkinen Edition – a tribute to Finnish rally driver Tommi Mäkinen, who won four consecutive World Rally Championship titles with Mitsubishi from 1996 to 1999 – sitting at the top of the range. Cars & Bids The Last Evo of Its KindThe equipment list for this vehicle includes Brembo brakes, an adjustable rear spoiler, Recaro front bucket seats, and a Momo steering wheel. It also features Active Yaw Control (AYC), Mitsubishi’s early torque-vectoring system that later evolved into Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC) – the integrated AWD technology used today in models such as the Eclipse Cross. Powering the vehicle is a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4G63 inline-four, rated at 276 horsepower and 275 lb-ft of torque. Mitsubishi’s iconic 4G63 – often pitted against Subaru’s EJ20 – is paired with a 5-speed manual transmission and an all-wheel-drive system. Modifications are part of the equipment list, including an HKS exhaust system, HKS air intake, an A’PEXi high-flow catalytic converter, and aftermarket pedal covers, among other upgrades. The car also rides on a set of 17-inch BBS wheels sourced from the Lancer Evo IX MR, arguably one of the most sought-after models in the Evolution lineup. Notably, a 2006 Lancer Evo IX MR has even previously sold for over $160,000 on Bring a Trailer. C&B Founder Doug DeMuro recently reviewed this example on his YouTube channel, which can be viewed in the embedded video below. A Rally Legend Finds a New HomeOther non-mechanical highlights of this Lancer Evo VI include relatively low mileage of 23,100 miles and a U.S. title, which the next owner should appreciate, as it allows them to skip additional import paperwork. The vehicle was purchased by the seller in February 2025 and imported from Japan three months later. The listing is set to end on February 12, with the current bid at $48,500 as of this writing. Subaru’s Fastest Car Ever Isn’t an STI, It’s an Electric SUV
Subaru’s first in-house built EV has arrived, and it happens to be the brand’s quickest production car ever – yes, faster than any WRX STI that came before it. The new all-electric Trailseeker SUV marks a major turning point for Subaru, showing us how the Japanese brand will build its own electric vehicles. First unveiled at the Japan Mobility Show last year, the Trailseeker is now confirmed for Australia, placing it squarely in one of the fastest-growing EV segments. The Fastest Subaru Ever, Disguised As A Rugged Electric SUV Subaru Subaru Subaru With 375 hp sent to all four wheels through Subaru’s signature symmetrical all-wheel-drive system, the Trailseeker is officially the quickest production Subaru ever made. Instant electric torque launches it from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.4 seconds, making it a few tenths of a second slower than a Mustang GT. Yet, speed isn't its primary goal; it just happens to be fast. The Trailseeker is a mid-size electric SUV built for real-world adventure, offering 8.3 inches of ground clearance, dual-function X-MODE for low-traction conditions, and a towing capacity of up to 3,500 pounds. It is larger and more practical than the Solterra, almost like an electrified Subaru Outback. Subaru’s First In-House EV, With Some Toyota DNA Subaru Subaru Subaru While Subaru now builds the Trailseeker itself at its Gunma plant in Japan, Toyota still has a hand in its development. The SUV rides on a modified version of Toyota’s e-TNGA electric platform, similar to what underpins the bZ4X and Lexus RZ. Unlike the Solterra, however, this marks Subaru’s first fully in-house produced EV, following other global manufacturing moves such as the US-built Forester Hybrid. Power comes from a 74.7 kWh battery that delivers around 280 miles of range, and takes less than 30 minutes to charge from zero to 80%. Inside, the Trailseeker features Subaru’s largest 14-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless charging, and a flat-floor cabin. Pricing, Rivals, and Australian Buyers Subaru Subaru Subaru In the United States, the Trailseeker starts at just $39,995 before rising into the mid-$40,000 range for higher trims, putting the Trailseeker up against rivals like the Tesla Model Y, Hyundai Ioniq 5, and Ford Mustang Mach-E. The Subaru Trailseeker will arrive in the US this spring and in Australia a few months after. It seems as if Subaru finally found the sweet spot between innovation and sticking to what you know. Models like the 2026 Forester Wilderness still feel like an old Subie, and we only hope that the new all-electric, surprisingly quick, off-road-capable Trailseeker resonates with fans the same way older Subies once did. It was a pretty smooth trip for us and not too late of night. We knew there was a chance of weather for Day 4 at Bradenton and woke up to rain. It had been a downpour that night as well so the pits resembled more of a river than a road. It wasn’t looking good but around 2 PM they were able to get it dried up and started running C & D groups. Following the rain was some serious cross winds. They deemed it unsafe to have the quicker classes go with the risk of it catching their chutes and called the day. So for some classes including Alex’s, their averages will now be calculated on a 4 day average rather than 5. Range Rover Confirms a New Electric Model Between Evoque and Range Rover
A Growing Electric Range Rover LineupRange Rover’s electric plans are coming into focus, and the lineup is getting busier. The compact electric Evoque replacement is set for 2027, built on JLR’s new EMA platform. The full-size Range Rover Electric is also launching this year after a long wait. Now, there’s confirmation of another EV that fits between those two, and it’s arriving sooner than expected. JLR Finance Chief Richard Molyneux confirmed the news during a recent earnings call. He called the new model a “unique” addition to the Range Rover lineup, but didn’t share many details. Based on the timing and where it fits, this is clearly the long-awaited electric replacement for the Velar. The report says this new EV will be revealed this year. That puts it ahead of the smaller Evoque replacement and just after the flagship Range Rover Electric. Land Rover The Electric Velar ReplacementLand Rover isn’t just turning the Velar into an EV. According to the Automotive News, the Velar replacement has a longer, lower body, with a shape that leans more toward a wagon than an SUV. The lower ride height should improve aerodynamics, which is key to electric range. This will be the first model built on JLR’s Electric Modular Architecture, or EMA. The same platform will also be used for the electric Evoque replacement and other future compact and midsize EVs. Production is set for JLR’s Halewood plant in the UK, which has been updated for this new architecture. Land Rover hasn’t shared specs or powertrain details yet, but it’s clear that this isn’t a budget Range Rover or a smaller version of the flagship. Instead, it’s aimed at buyers who want efficiency and road presence, not just off-road capability. Land Rover A Unique Range RoverThe timing of this launch shows where Land Rover sees demand. By bringing out a Velar-sized EV before the smaller Evoque replacement, the brand is betting on the premium midsize segment. It also means Range Rover will soon have a full-size, midsize, and compact electric lineup. Describing the model as “unique” is vague, but it points to a change in design direction. A lower, more car-like Range Rover is a big shift from what the badge usually means, especially as electric priorities take over. If the Velar replacement arrives as planned, it could end up being one of the most significant Range Rovers yet.
