  1. (Words and Photos by Chad Reynolds) I hit the Lone Star Throwdown in Conroe Texas this weekend and as usual was blown away by the turnout of great trucks. When I arrived at the just after it opened, I have to admit I was a bit worried. The place was not full. Not by a long shot. Now we normally get down here to the show an hour or so later, so I was trying to convince myself it was going to be okay, but I wasn’t doing a very good job of it. That was until about 10, when a definite increase in the hum around the places started happening and cruise traffic started really increasing. By the time I left the show a few hours later it was hopping as usual. And while the morning started off chilly and overcast, the grounds were in great shape with little or no wet spots from the showers that were expected Friday. And by 10 am I had to take my hoodie off because it was just too warm. It was great weather for a truck show friends. The food trucks were slinging snacks, although I didn’t see the hot chocolate ans s’mores folks from last year that made a killing. It really was a great day at the show. Lone Star Throwdown, or LST as it’s often referred to, is one of the premier custom truck shows in the country, and it happens rain or shine. This show is always one of my favorites. It draws folks from all over the country, along with Canada and Mexico. Even our friends from 1320Video were on hand and the video below is their coverage from the show. In 2027 you’ll find us on site with the OBS Suburban project you guys don’t know about yet. And maybe a merch stand, who knows. Here is our seventh gallery of photos, with more coming over the next several days. Check back tomorrow for more! 4. Jack Beckman was John Force Racing’s standard bearer in qualifying for the FMP NHRA Arizona Nationals by posting the second-quickest Funny Car run, while JFR teammates Jordan Vandergriff and Alexis DeJoria will go head-to-head in Round 1 and Josh Hart qualified 10th in Top Fuel for Sunday’s first-round matchups at Firebird Motorsports Park. Temperatures in the 90s and into triple digits continued to play a critical role in the success of the competitors in either nitro category getting down the track clean. Beckman’s best run in the PEAK Chevrolet SS Funny Car, 3.982 seconds at 323.97 mph, was made in Q1 Friday as was Vandergriff and the Cornwell Tools Chevrolet SS Funny Car team’s fifth-place run of 4.011 seconds at 288.21 mph and Alexis DeJoria’s run of 4.081 seconds at 298.47 mph in the Bandero Premium Tequila Chevrolet SS Funny Car for the 12th spot. “The PEAK Squad had a really good run in the heat in Q4 and earned three points for low ET of the session,” said Beckamn. “We were second low of the first session, fifth low of the third session, lowest of the last session and just overpowered it on Q2. We’ve been almost a polar opposite of Gainesville. In this one, we unloaded with a great run which set the tone and we made it three out of four times down track. I’m really confident. Tomorrow will be another hot and nasty day but, with an earlier start, first round might be where we see the quickest runs of the week. Our goal is to make ours and winning run and then we want to survive the attrition.” Josh Hart and the Burnyzz Speed Shop / Speedmaster Top Fuel team made their best run in Q3 Saturday morning with a time of 3.854 seconds at 328.30 mph in the semifinal round of the #2Fast2Tasty Challenge. Hart got the holeshot but put a cylinder or two out down track allowing Justin Ashley to move past for the win. The two will pair up again in Sunday’s first round of eliminations. “I have nothing but praise and love for the JFR team,” Hart said. “We are second to none when it comes to communication, and the team and I collaboratively came together and said, ‘You know, we had to try something big.’ That communication is priceless. We went out there and it didn’t fall our way this time, but I’m sure it will many more times in the future. And, hey, you have to race everybody on race day anyway. We’ll run our lane and be just fine.” Vandergriff took the win in the first round of the Funny Car #2Fast2Tasty Challenge in Q3 when Chad Green turned on the red light. He then bowed out to JR Todd in the final round during Q4 when the Cornwell Tools Chevy hazed the tires while Todd was able to drive through similar circumstances. DeJoria grabbed the holeshot (.087 to .114) against Todd in her #2Fast2Tasty Challenge semifinal but drove into tire smoke just past the 300-foot mark and clicked it off. Beckman earned three bonus points for low ET of Q4 and will face Daniel Wilkerson in Sunday’s first round of eliminations which is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. PT. Television coverage includes qualifying action on FS1 at 12 p.m. ET on Sunday, March 22, followed by eliminations coverage at 6:30 p.m. ET. 5. Two weeks ago on Sunday in Gainesville, six-time NHRA Pro Stock world champion Greg Anderson’s HendrickCars.com Chevrolet Camaro was ultra-fast and extra hungry, and that’s exactly how it showed up at Firebird Motorsports Park for the 41st annual FMP NHRA Arizona Nationals. Throughout qualifying, his hot rod continued to stun with stellar performances that bested the field and landed Anderson the 141st No. 1 qualifier award of his career. After throwing down the quickest qualifying runs in both rounds on Friday (6.552 and 6.602), Anderson returned on Saturday with ample horsepower that he and the KB Titan Racing braintrust aptly applied to the hottest racing surface of the year. The 9:30 a.m. qualifying session there on day two of the second race of the 2026 Mission Foods Drag Racing Series season saw Anderson nearly take flight as he raced to a 6.532-second jaunt that would stand as best overall when all four sessions were in the bank. “We just keep working on it and working on it, and it’s getting a little bit better and a little bit better,” said Anderson, who put up a 6.584 in the final session and earned top bonus points (12 in all) with the quickest Pro Stocker in each of the four qualifying rounds. “Apparently, my HendrickCars.com Chevy likes the heat out here, and I haven’t wilted yet. Hopefully, that’s a great combination for Sunday.” Anderson arrived in Phoenix with a solid recent history there in the Valley of the Sun. He went back-to-back with victories at Firebird Motorsports Park in each of the past two seasons, and he also won the event in 2003 and 2017. The Arizona Nationals No. 1 was his third in Phoenix, with the two previous poles coming in 2004 and 2006. After reaching the final round at the season opener at the Gatornationals, Anderson’s reputation at the Arizona Nationals and current momentum could be a recipe for success, and he’ll start the day with a first-round meeting with Chris McGaha. Anderson’s son, Cody, made his Pro Stock debut in Gainesville and raced his father in the second round of the event – this weekend, they are again on the same side of the ladder with a chance of meeting up in the semifinals. The younger Anderson, qualified in the lucky No. 13 spot, will have to defeat Erica Enders in the opening act for that to remain a possibility. As for the most winning driver in the history of the class, a 113th victory is on his mind, regardless of who is in the other lane. “I know I’ve got the horse, I just have to get up and ride that thing,” said Anderson. “And I feel pretty good.” Eliminations at the 41st annual FMP NHRA Arizona Nationals presented by NGK Spark Plugs are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. PST Sunday, March 22nd, at Firebird Motorsports Park. 9. A year after a disappointing qualifying effort at the FMP NHRA Arizona Nationals presented by NGK Spark Plugs second year Funny Car pro Spencer Hyde grabbed his second career No. 1 qualifier today at Firebird Motorsports Park. The up-and-coming driver who hails from Stratford, Ontario will go into eliminations with the quickest Funny Car on the property facing No. 16 qualifier Blake Alexander in the first round of eliminations. Hyde recorded his first career No. 1 qualifier at the Reading Nationals, the first race of the 2025 NHRA Countdown, last season. His No. 1 qualifier time of 3.979 seconds at 317.64 mph came in the opening session of qualifying and held up throughout the weekend. “That’s kind of what I was expecting to be honest,” said Hyde, the 2025 NHRA Rookie of the Year. “I figured, looking at the weather and the schedule, we figured Q1 was going to be the fastest session. I was a little surprised Chad Green went 3.99 this morning. That was a good run they made. We are happy to make four good, solid runs in qualifying. We kicked the belt off there on Q4 about 700-800 feet. We didn’t make it quite the finish line, but it was still on a decent run.” During the first two qualifying session Hyde recorded the quickest run of the first session and the second quickest run of qualifying session No. 2 with a solid 4.148 seconds at 300.06 mph in very hot conditions where track temperatures soared over 140 degrees. In the opening session of Saturday Hyde ran 4.098 seconds at 310.41 mph and he closed out qualifying for the FMP NHRA Arizona Nationals with a 4.172 second at 275.79 mph run. “For us to make four A to B trips during qualifying is really good,” said Hyde. “We’re very happy over there. We haven’t been particularly good in the heat. We learned some stuff in Gainesville and some tricky track conditions there, so we found a good hot track tune up, going into Q4 in Gainesville. We made a big change, and it paid off. I’ve got a good race car underneath me. You can deal with whatever track conditions are thrown at the tuner. And Jim’s doing a very good job. I’m happy with the boys and what the team’s done. We’ve got a good group of guys behind us, and I think if we can do that, four more runs tomorrow should be able to put in the winner’s circle.” Hyde will be looking to build on his momentum from racing to the quarterfinals at the season opening NHRA Gatornationals. The first round of eliminations for Top Fuel and Funny Car will get underway at 10 a.m. tomorrow from Firebird Motorsports Park. This story was originally published on March 21, 2026. 10. A year after dominating the Mission #2Fast2Tasty Challenge, reigning Top Fuel world champion Doug Kalitta is off and running in 2026, winning the first bonus race of the year in front of a capacity crowd on Saturday at Firebird Motorsports Park, defeating Antron Brown in the final round as part of this weekend’s 41st annual FMP NHRA Arizona Nationals presented by NGK Spark Plugs. J.R. Todd (Funny Car) and Dallas Glenn (Pro Stock) also won the first Mission #2Fast2Tasty Challenge of the year, while Shawn Langdon (Top Fuel), Spencer Hyde (Funny Car) and Greg Anderson (Pro Stock) qualified No. 1 at the second of 20 races during the 2026 NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series season. In the finals against Brown, Kalitta went 3.924-seconds at 308.64 in his 12,000-horsepower Mac Tools dragster, making a stellar run in the heat of the day. It continues Kalitta’s standout streak on Saturdays, as the two-time world champion won the bonus race five times in 2025. He knocked off Maddi Gordon to reach the finals and is looking forward to Saturday’s win hopefully translating to Sunday. “It’s fun to race on Saturday. It just brings an element to the fans to be able to see some racing,” Kalitta said. “I hope everybody comes back out on Sunday after seeing some racing on Saturday. “It’s definitely tricky out there. My guys, Alan Johnson and Mac [Savage], they did a heck of a job to have the lowest time in the session. Alan is a wizard with these things, and he and Mac are in there deciding what to run, but we’re always throwing down and trying to go low.” Defending event winner Shawn Langdon made a massive jump on Saturday in his 12,000-horsepower Kalitta Air Careers dragster, going all the way to the No. 1 spot with a run of 3.783 at 331.36. It gives the past world champion another standout performance at a track that’s treated him well over the years, as well as a first-round bye to open raceday. It’s the 23rd top qualifier for Langdon, who is after back-to-back wins in Phoenix. “Obviously, the track is a little tricky out here, but we were happy to make three good runs. We lost our first run Friday due to a safety-system malfunction, and that’s not ideal, but, like I’ve always said, if you surround yourself with good people you can do good things,” Langdon said. “I’ve got a great group behind me. Brian [Husen, crew chief] has been doing a fantastic job, and all the guys have been doing a great job putting the car together, so my confidence is as high as it’s ever been inside of a race car. “The [low qualifying] run this morning, we knew the conditions were the best they’d been and there was a chance to go to No. 1 and get that bye in the first round.” Leah Pruett moved up to second with a 3.788 at 325.92 and Kalitta took third after a run of 3.804 at 330.55. In Funny Car, J.R. Todd made it a Kalitta Motorsports sweep in the Mission #2Fast2Tasty Challenge, going 4.196 at 282.42 in his 12,000-horsepower DHL Toyota GR Supra to defeat Jordan Vandergriff in the final round. It’s the first time Kalitta Motorsports has swept the Saturday bonus race, with Todd finishing the job on Phoenix. He defeated Alexis DeJoria earlier in the day to advance to the final and then put together another solid run to slip past Vandergriff. Up next for Todd is doing his part to make it a total Kalitta sweep this weekend. “You always want to win these things, but I feel like we’re also trying to get good data for tomorrow,” Todd said. “I think Dickie [Venables] and Todd [Smith] wanted to see what we could get away with that run, because that what we’re going to be dealing with tomorrow. “Once you get on the asphalt, it’s tricky and it’s fun. The car got real sideways, like I was dirt tracking in there, but that’s what makes Funny Cars awesome. As a driver, you’re going to have to deal with that and maybe pedal [the throttle] tomorrow.” Spencer Hyde held on to the No. 1 spot as well thanks to Friday’s run of 3.979 at 317.64 in his 12,000-horsepower Head, Inc. Ford Mustang. It’s the second career No. 1 qualifier for the reigning Rookie of the Year and Hyde will start eliminations against Blake Alexander, looking for his first career Funny Car victory. “To be honest, looking at the weather and the schedule, I figured we figured we would stay No. 1,” Hyde said. “We’re really happy, just four good, solid runs. For us to make four A to B trips during qualifying is a really good place.” Jack Beckman stayed second with Friday’s run of 3.982 at 323.97 and Gainesville winner Chad Green qualified third with a 3.990 at 321.04. Pro Stock’s reigning world champion Dallas Glenn is off and running in 2026, winning the Mission #2Fast2Tasty Challenge on Saturday in his RAD Torque Systems Chevrolet Camaro, going 6.608 at 207.62 to slip past Erica Enders in the final round of the bonus race. Glenn performed well in the Saturday specialty race last season, which prepped him well for his championship run. Running well on Saturday remains a goal for Glenn, who defeated Matt Hartford earlier in the day to get to the final round. “I felt a lot of pressure last year because I missed the championship by so little (in 2024), and I definitely wanted a lot of redemption,” Glenn said. “This year, I feel like I’m a lot more relaxed and confident. I know what I can do, I know what I’m capable of, so I just go up there and kind of do my thing. “It feels really good to get this #2Fast2Tasty win and start accumulating those precious championship points that we know mean so much. At the very minimum, my main goal for every weekend is to make it to the semis so I can get into the next Challenge, and everything after that is a bonus. If you can just go to the semis every race, you’re usually one or two in points by the time the Countdown.” Greg Anderson clinched the No. 1 spot for the first time this season and 141st time in his career, performing even better on Saturday with a run of 6.532 at 208.26 in his HendrickCars.com Chevrolet Camaro. That hands the six-time champion Chris McGaha in the first round of eliminations and plenty of momentum going into raceday as he aims to repeat in Phoenix. Greg Stanfield is currently second after going 6.558 at 209.10 and Glenn’s 6.558 at 208.91 gave him third. Eliminations for the FMP NHRA Arizona Nationals presented by NGK Spark Plugs begin at 10 a.m. at Firebird Motorsports Park. This story was originally published on March 21, 2026. With the sale of Houston Raceway Park three years ago, TX2K was in need of a new home and with only one really big world class drag racing facility left, that meant that TX2K had to move to the Texas Motorplex in Ennis. This is the third year at the Motorplex, and it is carrying on the tradition that was started in Houston. This year’s action was hot and heavy, that is for sure! This track was the first all concrete dragstrip in the world, and also the first to see a 300 mph pass, and we’re sure it will see more new records during TX2K as well. 14. In only her second outing in the NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series, Top Fuel rookie Maddi Gordon clinched the provisional No. 1 qualifier position today at the FMP NHRA Arizona Nationals presented by NGK Spark Plugs. The relentless Arizona heat created challenges, but the spirited young Ron Capps Motorsports driver rose to the occasion, making the first sub-four-second run of the weekend in the highly competitive Top Fuel field. Gordon’s Carlyle Tools Top Fuel dragster, tuned by crew chiefs Rob Flynn and Troy Fasching, powered to the top of Friday’s qualifying sheet with a blistering pass of 3.844 seconds at 329.42 mph. If today’s pass holds through tomorrow, it will be the first No. 1 qualifier of Gordon’s professional career, which began two weeks ago in Gainesville, Florida, when she raced to a semifinal finish in her Top Fuel debut at the historic NHRA Gatornationals. “I’m always excited when it comes to racing,” remarked Gordon. “I went into the weekend feeling confident in our team, and Rob and Troy. Especially in the hot weather. We started earlier than usual but we’ve got plenty of Monster Energy on hand, so that wasn’t a problem. We’ve made really good, consistent runs in the heat. So I was actually quite excited that it was going to be hot. To go out that first pass and not only make it from A to B but to make the only sub-four-second run of that session was such a big confidence booster for all of us.” Gordon is quickly becoming a fan favorite thanks to her uncanny ability to describe her runs. In the second heat of the day, she ran into tire smoke, offering her an opportunity to learn more about the nuances of operating a 12,000-horsepower dragster. “In the second pass, it actually started to spin the tire and it just barely started smoking. It wasn’t aggressive tire smoke so I wasn’t sure if it was me or the race car. But when we went back and looked at the data, Rob and Troy were very happy with how I handled it, so that gave me a lot of confidence as a driver. Overall, today was an amazing day. Tomorrow is going to be just as hot. We’re hoping it holds because getting a No. 1 qualifier would be huge. It will be tough. There are a lot of good cars out here that can run fast. We’re just going to keep truckin’.” When qualifying continues tomorrow morning, Gordon will pull double duty as she competes in the first Mission #2Fast2Tasty Challenge of the season. The NHRA Rookie of the Year contender earned her spot in the race-within-a-race when she reached the semifinals in her debut. 15. The second race of NHRA’s 75th anniversary season is off to a blazing start at Firebird Motorsports Park in Chandler, Ariz., and Greg Anderson and his HendrickCars.com Chevrolet Camaro have risen to the top on a blistering first day of the 41st annual FMP NHRA Arizona Nationals presented by NGK Spark Plugs. After the first two rounds of qualifying, Anderson was sitting in the No. 1 spot, and with more hot weather to be dished out on Saturday, odds are reasonably good that he will be able to protect the position and earn the 141st pole of his career. “We got our ducks in a row on Sunday in Gainesville, and it looks like they stayed that way,” said Anderson, referring to the season-opener two weeks ago on the other side of the country. “I’ve got my hotrod back with this HendrickCars.com Chevy, and she was happy in the heat today. “It was a little warm in Gainesville, but nothing compared to this. We’re in Phoenix, it’s the desert, but I can’t remember racing here when it’s been this hot. This is a record for me; it’s a little bit out of my comfort zone, but so far, everybody has done a great job. It was a good, tight qualifying session both runs, and I’m looking forward to more of that tomorrow.” One of the lead stories heading into the weekend was the forecast. Phoenix is typically hot, but with air temps expected to exceed 100 degrees Fahrenheit and track temps already teetering over 130F, managing the racing surface is the top challenge. “It’s hard to do, and I’m pretty damn impressed with the job everybody in this class did today,” said Anderson, who was No. 1 out of the box with a 6.552-second pass and followed up with a 6.602 in the later session that was also low of the round. “Usually when you start the season and get your first nasty-hot weather, you’ll see a lot of cars fail to make runs. We didn’t see that today. Everybody is getting smarter, and it just makes for better racing. It’s a tough deal, but you just have to manage the racetrack the best you can.” The schedule for Saturday will mirror what it was today, and the first Pro Stock runs are scheduled at 9:30 a.m., with the second session following at noon. But there will be more on the line than potential changes in position: the first Mission #2Fast2Tasty NHRA Challenge will also take place on Saturday. The special bonus race turns Saturday qualifying into competition as the semifinalists from the previous event are matched once more for a bonus purse and potentially crucial bonus points that will come into play when the Countdown to the Championship playoffs begin in the fall. Anderson will match with Erica Enders in the early session on Saturday morning, the driver he defeated in the semifinals in Gainesville, and reigning world champion Dallas Glenn will square off with Matt Hartford. The winner of each match will race for the #2Fast2Tasty title in the second Saturday session. Anderson is pleased with the first day’s results and is looking forward to the possibilities on the table for Saturday. “The toughest thing for me is going to be to not wilt — I’m a sissy anymore, and I try to stay in the air conditioning the most I can, but I need to find a way to toughen up for Sunday,” said the six-time world champion and most winning driver in the history of the class. “It’s going to be a mental challenge and a sweat-fest, no doubt about that, but I love racing out here. As hot as that racetrack is, you only saw one or two cars shake the tires. Everybody is doing a great job, and it really tells you that the racetrack is holding up very well. We’ve got two more qualifying sessions yet and the Mission #2Fast2Tasty Challenge, but I can already tell we’re going to have a great race on Sunday.” Qualifying for the 41st annual FMP NHRA Arizona Nationals presented by NGK Spark Plugs will continue on Saturday and include the first Mission #2Fast2Tasty NHRA Challenge. Rounds are scheduled at 9:30 a.m. and 12 noon local time at Firebird Motorsports Park. 16. IAC, Idle Air Control, is a little valve that controls a vacuum leak on fuel injected vehicles. In a carbureted application the throttle blades allow just enough air for the car to idle to pass through the “closed” throttle blades. In a typical single blade throttle body the amount of air that can go around the blade isn’t enough to maintain a fixed idle speed when loads change. The IAC opens and closes to control the airflow in order to maintain a target idle speed. Setting your IAC is the difference between a great running ride and one that hunts for idle every time you turn on the AC or crank up the stereo. In the video below, Holley shows you how to do just that properly with your Terminator X. Video Description: Having high or rough idle on your Holley Terminator X drive-by-wire setup? Here’s how to quickly set up your idle airflow correctly. On DBW systems, there’s no physical IAC valve—the throttle blade controls idle through the pedal vs. throttle table. With the engine fully warmed up, adjust the 0% pedal cell until your IAC position is under 10% at idle. IAC above 10–15%? Raise the value. IAC at 0% but idle too high? Lower the value. You can make this adjustment using the 3.5” handheld, Holley app (Bluetooth), or Terminator X laptop software. Dial this in for a smooth, steady idle and proper DBW performance. Making just her second career Top Fuel start on Friday at Firebird Motorsports Park, rookie sensation Maddi Gordon took the provisional No. 1 spot to kick off this weekend’s 41st annual FMP NHRA Arizona Nationals presented by NGK Spark Plugs. Spencer Hyde (Funny Car) and Greg Anderson (Pro Stock) are also the provisional No. 1 qualifiers at the second of 20 races during the 2026 NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series season. Gordon went 3.844-seconds at 329.42 mph in her 12,000-horsepower Carlyle Tools dragster, putting her on track to earn her first career No. 1 qualifier if it holds. Racing in warm conditions, Gordon made the only 3-second run in the Top Fuel ranks during the first session on Friday, doing so a race after advancing to the semifinals in her professional debut at NHRA’s season-opener in Gainesville. “I was really, really stoked to go down that first pass,” Gordon said. “That was just so exciting after you hear all those cars smoking the tires ahead of us. But you know what? I got so much faith in Rob [Flynn] and Troy [Fasching]. They have done a stellar job of getting down those hot racetracks and I couldn’t be more proud to drive for them. “Before Gainesville, a month and a half ago, I had never even warmed up a dragster with a blower on it, so there’s so many firsts in the past month and a half. I learn something new every single pass I get on the racetrack. The more I know, I feel like I can be a better driver because I just have so much to learn.” Defending event winner Shawn Langdon rebounded with a solid 3-second run to close out the day and is currently second with a run of 3.925 at 307.30. Antron Brown is third after going 3.985 at 297.09. A year ago in Phoenix, Funny Car’s Spencer Hyde failed to make the field, but that won’t be an issue this year, as the reigning Rookie of the Year bolted to the provisional No. 1 spot on Friday thanks to a run of 3.979 at 317.64 in his 12,000-horsepower Head, Inc. Ford Mustang. It puts Hyde on track for his second career top spot and already makes his weekend better than a year ago at Firebird Motorsports Park. That was his second career start in the Funny Car ranks – he also didn’t qualify in Gainesville to open 2025 – but Hyde quickly got on track, putting together a solid season as NHRA’s top rookie. After last year’s struggles, he was plenty pleased with Friday’s results. “We had a tough start last year, and I learned that driving a Funny Car is not easy. It’s the most humbling thing I’ve ever driven,” Hyde said. “These things are hard to drive all the time. You just never know what they’re going to throw at you. Driving them is challenging when it’s hot and greasy; they’re moving around out there and they take a little bit to settle in. “On our [3.97] it never really settled in, but we slipped it through there and made a good run, good enough to be No. 1. Second run I was pointing a little bit too far right, and made a pretty big correction early, and it actually dropped the [cylinder] and was trying to push me over the lane, but I kept it off the wall, made a good full run, and was second low the session, so we’re pretty happy.” Jack Beckman took the second spot with a 3.982 at 323.97 and Matt Hagan delivered a 3.998 at 321.04 to sit third. In Pro Stock, defending event winner Greg Anderson impressed in the heat, making the quickest run in both sessions, including a run of 6.552 at 206.99 in his HendrickCars.com Chevrolet Camaro to open the day. If that holds up, Anderson would collect his first top qualifier of the season and the 141st in his standout career. It’s also a stark contrast to Gainesville, where the six-time world champion struggled throughout qualifying and just slipped into the field. He turned things around in eliminations, advancing to the final round, but Anderson was thrilled with the qualifying turnaround on Friday. “Without a doubt that morning run, because of the track being cooler, is going to be the best qualifying run of the weekend,” Anderson said. “You better get right on that first one, so a lot of pressure. You just can’t go up there, you know, and shoot for the moon, because if you don’t make it down, you may not qualify. “Just from the first session to the afternoon session, we lost about four or five-hundredths of ET, and that’s going to be probably 30-40 horsepower, just like that. You have to do other things to make the engine think it has power – gear ratio and things like that. You have to get all of the round pegs in the round holes, but it’s hard to do.” Greg Stanfield is currently second after going 6.558 at 209.10 and Jeg Coughlin Jr.’s 6.562 at 209.10 puts him third through two sessions. Qualifying continues at 9:30 a.m. locat time on Saturday at the FMP NHRA Arizona Nationals presented by NGK Spark Plugs at Firebird Motorsports Park. 20. With a cool head and competitive spirit, David Theisen has achieved a lot of success in racing over the years. He earned the NMCA Dart NA 10.5 championship in 2018, and more recently, he pulled off a third-place finish in Small Tire Pro Stock and a second-place finish in All Motor at Darana Dragway in Michigan in 2025. The Michigan-based racer who famously flies banners for sponsor LaFontaine Performance Center, ran as quick and fast as 7.70 and 178 mph in his fan-favorite Firebird powered by a 500 cubic-inch DRCE engine by Uratchko Racing Engines and a Turbo 400 by Proformance Racing Transmissions last year, and he is now preparing to put down even more power. Chris Uratchko of Uratchko Racing Engines is going over Theisen’s engine before he gives it the go-ahead, and this year, rather than the automatic transmission Theisen has relied on for years, his engine will be paired with a five-speed from Liberty’s and a Ram billet clutch. “I was fast with the automatic transmission, and I was happy to take it as far as we took it, but I decided toward the end of last year that I wanted to try something new with a five-speed transmission,” said Theisen, who runs a Holley Dominator system. “Jim Filipowski and Travis Gates did the switchover, and they knocked it out really fast. They had a lot of work to do in the transmission tunnel area, and they did some bars in the car along with some wiring related to the transmission, and we set up the clutch pedal.” Small Tire Pro Stock racers Dwight Ausmus and John Langer stepped up with several suggestions for Theisen, to ensure their fellow racer had even more success with his new five-speed set-up. Theisen hopes to get dialed-in with a test session or two before heading to the Small Tire Pro Stock race set for May 22-23 at World Wide Technology Raceway in Illinois, as part of Nostalgia Drag Racing League Route 66 Rockabilly Reunion. He will continue his Small Tire Pro Stock championship chase on July 10-11 at Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park in Indiana, as part of Nostalgia Drag Racing League Hot Rod Nationals presented by Ray Skillman Automotive Group; August 8-9 at Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park, as part of Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series NHRA North Central Division 3 Divisional Race; September 11-12 at Darana Raceway in Ohio, as part of Nostalgia Drag Racing League World Nostalgia Drags and October 23-25 at Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park, as part of NHRA North Central Divisional Division 3 Fall Classic. “My wife, Anna, does not know this part yet, but she is going to learn how to do maintenance on a clutch,” said Theisen, with a laugh. “I am excited to see how it goes, and hopefully I won’t suck. I think I will have more tunability, especially down low on hot days, and I think the car will pick up through the top end of the track.” The post David Theisen Ready to Row Gears with a New Liberty’s Five-Speed first appeared on Drag Illustrated. 22. 31 years after winning an IHRA Pro Modified championship together, Pro Mod icons Tommy Mauney and Shannon “The Iceman” Jenkins are teaming up once again to compete at the IHRA season opener this weekend at Darana Motorsports Park – Benson. Fellow veteran driver, Tony Wilson, initiated the reunion after he asked Mauney to build a modern-day replica of “Barney,” the acclaimed nitrous-fed ‘41 Willys that Mauney – with Jenkins tuning – won the 1995 IHRA Pro Mod championship with, ending a streak of four consecutive championships by class stalwart Scotty Cannon. While the new iteration of Barney notably has more power than the original – it features a 998ci Pat Musi motor with a Liberty transmission and TyDrive – the wrap and color scheme are identical to Mauney’s original. “Building this car has been a dream of mine since I was a kid,” says Wilson. “I’ve always wanted a ‘41 Willys. Having Tommy drive and Shannon on the keyboard tuning, it’s just the right thing for this car. It’s been 30 years, and I feel like both of these guys are getting close to the end of their careers. There’s no better way to showcase the car and them than doing it with IHRA.” Wilson lives just five miles away from Mooresville Dragway in North Carolina, and remembers attending the Quick 8 Racers Association events monthly and seeing all the cars built by Mauney there competing. When the time came for him to finally see his dream car come to life, there was only one option on who would build it. “When I was a kid, I didn’t know about any other cars. I thought you had to have a Tommy Mauney car if you were running Pro Mod,” Wilson says. “Things change over the years, but I’ve always looked up to Tommy and Shannon – they’re just well-respected people. When I thought, ‘I’m gonna build a brand-new car, what would I do? I want to build a Tommy Mauney car.’ I went to Tommy and asked if he’d be interested in building another Barney, and he said he’d love to do that. There’s no better way to honor these guys for what they’ve done over the years.” While the car is mainly intended for Pro Nitrous competition, the class is not currently contested in IHRA. Instead, the team will be competing this weekend in Outlaw Pro Mod as a way to break in a brand-new car in a slightly smaller field. The goal is to simply have a good time and make memories. “The car is brand new. It’s never been down to racetrack,” says Wilson. “I think this worked out to be the best-case scenario. Tommy is super excited about getting this opportunity, and I have plenty of parts. Tommy built this car up to date – it is as state of the art as anything out there, and we have all the stuff to do it. I just want Tommy and Shannon to go enjoy themselves and have fun with it.” Wilson won’t just be watching on the sidelines, however. He’ll also be driving this weekend, piloting Ed Burnley’s Harts Charger-equipped “Iron Man” ’69 Camaro in the regular Pro Mod class. “This all played hand-in hand-with Ed Burnley giving me the opportunity to drive the Iron Man car,” Wilson says. “It’s not feasible for me to drive two cars. I just don’t have time to do it. With Ed giving me the opportunity to run his car in Pro Mod, it allowed time for Tommy to be able to do this.” Whether this arrangement is simply a one-off deal, or turns into something bigger in 2026, remains to be seen. For his part, Wilson is leaving the ball in Jenkins and Mauney’s court, and letting them run with it. But regardless, he’s excited to see what they do in those classic purple and white colors. “As long as we don’t tear anything up, I’ve left it to them – I’ll let them race it as much as they want to race,” says Wilson. “If they want to run PDRA, if they want to run IHRA, they can run anywhere they want to run with this car. I’ll service it, I’ll maintenance the car and take care of it. I’ll play the car-owner, role for the year, if they want to continue to race it. This is an open invitation to Shannon and Tommy to have a year of racing together, and it’s up to them how much they want to race this year.” This story was originally published on March 20, 2026.
