Honda Passport Named One of the Safest SUVs on Sale
A Smash Hit for HondaWhen Honda reintroduced the Passport in late 2018, it practically banished memories of the old Isuzu-based model sold from 1994 to 2002. It was now a crossover, essentially being a shorter, five-seat version of the more family-oriented Pilot. Since then, the Passport has been a smash hit and sold more than enough to merit a new generation model. It continues to build on the success of its predecessor, and it's still a strong and steady seller for Honda. So far, it's been proving itself as a reliable model, and it's surprisingly capable off-road too. But for those still on the fence buying one, consider the fact that it was recently awarded the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's (IIHS) Top Safety Pick+ award. Honda One of the Safest Out ThereThe IIHS doesn't give out awards lightly. After all, the organization kicked off some of the toughest tests for vehicle safety around, popularizing the offset crash tests, as well as checking if advanced driver assists really work as advertised. A lot of cars get good ratings these days, but the Passport, under the new tougher scoring system of the IIHS, performed with flying colors. If you take a look at its scoresheet, all but one parameter was rated good, an impressive feat. Crashworthiness was rated highly, as well as its advanced driver assists. Honda The Passport's Standard Safety KitIn terms of safety, all Passport trims come with Honda Sensing that bundles a good chunk of advanced driver assists. It includes autonomous emergency braking, pedestrian detection, road departure mitigation, blind-spot monitoring, lane change assist, lane keep assist, and adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go function. Cross-traffic alert is also standard, plus rollover mitigation, a rear-view camera, and knee airbags Honda didn't scrimp on safety features for the Pilot, although some trims get a little extra. Trailsport and up models get rear camera washers, while Trailsport Elite and higher get a multi-view camera system plus Trailwatch. Other Honda Top Safety PicksThe Passport isn't the only Honda that received praise from the IIHS. Also receiving the Top Safety Pick+ nod is the HR-V. The subcompact crossover is also known as the ZR-V in other parts of the world, and it also consistently received high safety ratings abroad. Two popular Honda models got the Top Safety Pick award, namely the Civic and the Accord. While it didn't get the top prize, those two models are still incredibly safe cars. We could expect additional safety upgrades down the line to get that Top Safety Pick+ title. View the full article

At last, one of the short track greats gets his NASCAR opportunity
In a series of social media posts over the past two months, Lee Pulliam has posted pictures of his Late Model Stock heyday with captions that tend to read something like ‘I never did get over you.’ It’s actually kind of silly to think about a heyday taking place a decade ago for a race car driver that is still only 37-years-old. In a just universe, this would be the peak of that heyday ...Keep readingView the full article

Audi and Porsche Are Teaming Up After a Brutal 2025
Audi and Porsche: A 2025 to ForgetAfter successive years of cashing in profits, Audi and Porsche had a bloodbath in 2025. For Audi, it had a particularly rough time in the U.S., with sales dipping even below pandemic levels. For Porsche, profits plummeted by a whopping 90% from €5.64 billion to a middling €413 million. The reason? On one hand, there's the cooling demand for EVs, and the two brands banked heavily on electric models. There are also a couple of cancelled projects, delayed plans, and other ventures that will never recoup the initial investment. Sales are also down, and China is an ever-looming threat. The next couple of years won't be easy, but the two are going all out to turn the tide. Audi Closing the RanksIn a report by Automotive News, Audi and Porsche will pursue greater cooperation in a bid to cut costs. It's said that Porsche CEO Michael Leiters paid Audi CEO Gernot Döllner a visit in Ingolstadt to discuss the matter. This is a huge step for both, as the two have historically worked independently of each other despite using common platforms and being under the wing of the Volkswagen Auto Group. Speaking to the publication, Leiters said, "Audi is a key partner for us. We want to leverage shared potential even more." Given the way things are going, this move isn't just about consolidation and cost reduction; it's about the long-term survival of both automakers. Of course, it will be interesting to see how this cooperation goes, but the two will have to get along nicely for both their sakes. Porsche Simplify and CooperateAutomotive News mentioned that platform sharing within Audi and Porsche has led to tension over the years. The publication said that the development of the Premium Platform Electric architecture "required repeated intervention from [Oliver] Blume to resolve conflicts." Blume is the CEO of the Volkswagen Auto Group. But with finances in need of a boost, cooperation is of utmost importance. Porsche will rely on Audi to help it bring back more ICE models, while keeping the current crop of gas-powered models sold alongside the new EVs. Audi's Premium Platform Combustion architecture will also lend itself to the next-generation Macan (non-EV), and the upcoming Q9 will also serve as the basis of a three-row Porsche crossover. Audi will be using the platform for the delayed Cayman and Boxster EV models. It will be for the production version of the Coupe C Concept that was shown in Germany late last year. There are also rumors of the Panamera and Taycan being built on a single platform, and it's possible that Audi could use that in one form or another down the line. Audi View the full article

Hyundai Is Now One of the Safest Car Brands in America
An Expert In SafetyCar brands often claim to be the leading experts in something; this gives them an edge in attracting prospective customers. A common claim by car brands is fuel efficiency or environmental friendliness. Others, though, are taking on the tough task of being the safest brands on the market. Safety can be tested and measured, but the standards or criteria used vary widely. The IIHS is considered one of the top safety testing and awarding bodies globally, and any recognition from them is high praise. IIHS/Hyundai Going For GoldHyundai, as a brand, has in more recent times become a propagator of style, new technology, and safety. The latter seems to be shining through because the IIHS has just given them 7 TSP awards. 6 models in the lineup get the highest TSP+, while 1 car wins a TSP award. Specifically, the IONIQ 5, IONIQ 9, Sonata, Kona, Tucson, and Santa Fe are now TSP+ cars, and the Elantra bags the TSP certification. Winning a total of seven top IIHS awards is no easy task, given that for 2026, the IIHS imposed new, stricter safety standards and criteria. Most of the new standards are geared towards assessing how much safer cars are for rear-passenger occupants and how well they prevent crashes involving pedestrians and other vehicles. IIHS President David Harkey said that they're asking brands to make excellent protection for rear passengers the norm. He further added that TSP+ brands need to improve crash-avoidance systems. In order to get the top TSP awards, cars must now be graded as "good" when it comes to the moderate front overlap test, as opposed to last year's criteria of only needing a classification of "acceptable." The backbone of Hyundai's safety success is the proprietary Smartsense suite, which includes features such as Lane Departure Warning, Lane Keep Assist, Driver Attention Warning, Forward Collision Assist, Forward Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection, Rear Occupant Alert (door logic), and High Beam Assist. Hyundai All In The FamilyWith Hyundai's latest haul of TSP awards, the company is now the second most awarded in the U.S., second only to Mazda by a small margin. However, the Hyundai Group as a whole is the most awarded in the U.S. if you account for Kia and Genesis as well. The group now has and sells 21 models with TSP+ and TSP distinctions. Looking at the IIHS chart of models with TSP and TSP+ awards (as of March 2026), the Hyundai group accounts for 3 of the Top 5 brands, the other 2 being Mazda and Audi. IIHS View the full article

2026 Subaru Forester Is Still One of the Safest SUVs You Can Buy
Safety That Speaks for ItselfSubaru has long built its brand around safety, and this year is no exception. The Japanese automaker announced that the 2026 model year of the Forester, Ascent, and Outback earned IIHS Top Safety Pick+ awards, the highest honor in the organization’s safety ratings. The Forester, Ascent, and Outback are among the 45 vehicles to earn IIHS Top Safety Pick+ awards so far this year, with the Forester collecting its 20th consecutive Top Safety Pick honor. That streak dates back to the early years of the IIHS Top Safety Pick program, which was introduced for the 2006 model year. The achievement is even more notable because the nonprofit tightened its 2026 criteria to place greater emphasis on crash-avoidance systems and rear-seat passenger protection. “Earning IIHS Top Safety Pick+ awards for 2026, considering the enhanced testing criteria, is a defining achievement for Subaru,” said Jeff Walters, President and Chief Operating Officer, Subaru of America, Inc. Chase Bierenkoven IIHS Turns Up the PressureUnder the revised criteria, vehicles must now earn a Good rating – rather than merely Acceptable – in the moderate overlap front test to qualify for at least a Top Safety Pick. For Top Safety Pick+, they must also earn a Good rating in the pedestrian front crash prevention test and an Acceptable or Good rating in the updated vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention evaluation as part of the crash-avoidance requirements. Central to Subaru’s crash-avoidance package is its EyeSight Driver Assist Technology, an SAE Level 2 advanced driver-assistance system. It includes features such as Pre-Collision Braking and Automatic Emergency Steering across all 2026 Forester, Ascent, and Outback models. That is crucial because the IIHS requires qualifying front pedestrian crash prevention technologies to be standard equipment on every trim for a vehicle to earn an award. Kristen Brown Intelligence Behind the WheelSubaru has partnered with Infineon Technologies to further advance its EyeSight driver-assist technology, developing a new microcontroller designed to process data more quickly and improve response times in potential crash situations. That could prove beneficial in the long term as the IIHS looks to further tighten crash-avoidance requirements under its 30x30 vision, which aims to reduce U.S. crash deaths by 30 percent by 2030. The IIHS has also pushed for safe cars that do not require buyers to spend a fortune, given that the average new-vehicle price reached $50,000 last year. The Forester is a prime example, starting at $29,995. Meanwhile, the Outback and Ascent carry starting MSRPs of $34,995 and $40,795, respectively. Kia’s Cheapest Sedan and Flagship EV Both Just Won Top Safety Awards
The Future Is About SafetyWe often talk about what the next step is for the automotive industry. What used to be a conservative industry has quickly become an adaptive one, making sure that all products on sale are up to par with modern times and needs. Safety is a huge selling point for all brands, ensuring fewer chances for drivers, passengers, and bystanders to be involved in accidents. In fact, most developments and next-generation technologies are geared towards safety, with advancements in autonomous technology and driver aids as the focus. Kia is one brand eager to lead the charge, having just secured two more IIHS Top Safety Pick+ (TSP+) awards. Kia Newly AnnointedKia has just announced that the K4 and the EV9 SUV have been awarded the highly sought-after distinction from the IIHS. The Top Safety Pick+ is the highest award given by the IIHS in the United States. When it comes to safety, the IIHS doesn't play around; its testing and criteria are rigorous and often updated yearly. This means that winning the TSP+ is no cakewalk. This was echoed by SeungKyu (Sean) Yoon, President and CEO of Kia North America and Kia America, who said that safety isn't a single feature for the brand; it's something they are putting across the whole model range. He went on to say that expanding the IIHS across more models shows Kia's commitment to safety standards that evolve quickly. Part of the IIHS's reworked 2026 criteria is a new focus on rear-seat passenger protection and crash-avoidance protection. New protocols were adopted for testing rear passenger safety in moderate overlap front crashes. Also, improved testing was used for pedestrian crash prevention and high-speed vehicle-vehicle crash prevention. Kia View the 2 images of this gallery on the original article A Stable of Safe ChoicesThe K4 and the EV9 join the brands' already awarded TSP+ models, which include the 2026 Sorento (built after September 2025) and the 2026 Sportage (built after May 2025). Having four models with the TSP+ award is also a feat in itself for Kia; there are only 36 of these models across multiple brands. In fact, it's widely recognized that the Hyundai/Kia group is a top performer in the safety category. Looking at the K4 and the EV9 exclusively already gives us an idea of Kia's wide-ranging approach to safety. The K4 is considered a budget-friendly option, while the EV9 is considered a flagship EV model, yet both have the same safety commendation. IIHS View the full article

Is Hyundai Finally Cool? Brad Arnold’s Appointment as Design Head Could Be the Turning Point
Hyundai Wasn’t Always Cool, Now It Is Demanding AttentionHyundai was not known for standout design in the past. The brand built its reputation on value and reliability. That approach worked, but it rarely created excitement. Over the last few years, that has changed. Hyundai’s latest models are sharper, more expressive, and harder to ignore. The company is now producing vehicles that generate conversation rather than blend into traffic. Much of that shift can be linked to Brad Arnold, now officially Chief Designer and Head of Hyundai Design North America. His promotion reflects Hyundai’s commitment to design as a core strategy. Arnold understands the North American market and brings a clear creative direction. His leadership suggests Hyundai will continue pushing toward designs that connect emotionally with buyers while standing out globally. Gabriel Ionica View the 3 images of this gallery on the original article The Sandbox Era Signals a More Aggressive HyundaiArnold’s influence was already visible before this appointment. In 2025, he served as interim head of Hyundai Design North America and oversaw multiple production and concept programs. His past work includes the facelifted Hyundai Genesis Coupe, 2023 Palisade facelift, and the Santa Cruz, all of which helped define Hyundai’s current design identity. He also contributed to the Genesis GV80 Concept, a key project in establishing Hyundai’s premium ambitions. The bigger development is Hyundai’s push into more aggressive design territory through its California studio. This effort centers on “The Sandbox,” a creative space focused on XRT models. Vehicles like the 2026 Palisade XRT PRO and the CRATER Concept show a stronger, more rugged design direction. The styling is more assertive and tailored to North American tastes. Arnold’s background, including his time at General Motors working on Cadillac and Chevrolet concepts, supports this evolution toward bolder and more confident design. Hyundai View the 3 images of this gallery on the original article Hyundai Chases Real CredibilityHyundai has long struggled with perception among enthusiasts. It was often seen as practical but not exciting. Pop culture even reinforced that image, with films like The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift highlighting the brand’s lack of street credibility. That perception has lingered despite major improvements in engineering and quality. Arnold’s leadership could mark a turning point. His willingness to push stronger design themes gives Hyundai a chance to reshape its image. The XRT lineup in particular shows promise as a more expressive and lifestyle-focused offering. If Hyundai can back up its bold designs with consistent execution, it may finally earn broader respect. The brand is no longer just competing on value. It is building an identity, and that is a critical step toward becoming genuinely desirable. Cole Attisha View the 3 images of this gallery on the original article View the full article

VW Recalls Nearly 100,000 EVs Over Battery Fire Risk
Battery Trouble Goes GlobalVolkswagen is recalling nearly 100,000 electric vehicles due to potential issues with their high-voltage battery modules. According to Automotive News, citing Germany’s motor vehicle authority (KBA), the defect can lead to reduced driving range and may pose a fire risk. While recalls in the U.S. are typically handled by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), this particular safety campaign covers nearly 75,000 Volkswagen ID. vehicles worldwide – including the ID.3, ID.4, ID.5, ID. Buzz Cargo, and ID. Buzz – as well as nearly 20,000 Cupra Borns, a compact EV based on the VW Group’s MEB platform, built between February 2022 and August 2024. About 28,000 of the affected vehicles are in Germany. VW How Volkswagen Plans to Fix ItThe remedy involves inspecting the high-voltage battery in affected vehicles for potentially faulty modules. The vehicles will also receive a software update, and if necessary, individual battery modules will be replaced. In the U.S., only the Volkswagen ID.4 and ID. Buzz are sold from the affected ID. lineup. The ID.4 is built at VW's Chattanooga plant in Tennessee, while the ID. Buzz is imported from Germany. Whether either model is affected in the U.S. would depend on a separate NHTSA filing or confirmation from the automaker. Even without a confirmed NHTSA recall, the campaign could still be relevant, particularly for current owners and prospective buyers. Developments in overseas markets often serve as an early indicator of potential actions in the U.S. Volkswagen The Situation So FarWhat the NHTSA records show are two separate recalls involving certain Volkswagen ID.4 units, one tied to missing Self-Discharge Detection (SDD) software and the other to potentially faulty high-voltage battery cell modules. The software-related recall affects 43,881 model-year 2023–2025 ID.4s, while the hardware-related campaign covers 670 units built between November 3, 2022, and September 22, 2024. The company was scheduled to notify owners on Friday, March 20. The ID. Buzz, meanwhile, has not been listed in a new NHTSA recall this year. It is worth noting, though, that Volkswagen is skipping the 2026 model year for the ID. Buzz in the U.S., a pause the automaker has said will help it manage inventory ahead of the electric minivan's planned return as a 2027 model. Volkswagen View the full article

One of America’s Cheapest Cars Just Earned a Top Safety Award
Cheap, Cheerful, and SafeThe Nissan Sentra is one of the least expensive cars in America today. Starting at just $22,600, it costs just a little more than the Kia K4, slightly undercuts the good ol' Corolla, and is over $2,000 less than a Civic. Admittedly, the brand gets flak due to certain owners driving its products in an over-enthusiastic way. The reality is, the Sentra is a hugely competent compact sedan. Brush aside the undeserved reputation, and the Sentra is a solid, well-equipped car for not a lot of cash. Those considering it will also be glad to know they're making a safe choice, literally and figuratively. The car was recently awarded the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's (IIHS) Top Safety Pick+ award, and that's not even for the top-spec model yet. IIHS' Seal of ApprovalEven before, the IIHS has been tough on cars, going beyond the usual government tests to bring out any weaknesses to ensure safety. With that, the organization doesn't hand out awards easily, and having that Top Safety Pick+ tag on any car makes it worth considering. The IIHS tested the Sentra SV, the model that sits just above the entry-level S trim. It already comes equipped with a suite of advanced driver assists, which the IIHS praised. The assists were rated as average overall following the tests, but performed well in pedestrian collision avoidance. The Sentra also got good ratings all around for its crashworthiness, providing high levels of protection for both front and rear passengers. IIHS The Sentra's Standard Safety KitEven in its most basic trim, the Sentra comes equipped with heaps of safety features. All come equipped with autonomous emergency braking, pedestrian detection, rear cross-traffic alert, blind-spot warning, and lane-keep assist, to name a few. The safety package is enhanced the higher up the model grades. For the top-spec SL, it comes with a surround-view monitor, ProPilot Assist, unresponsive driver assist, and adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go function. These features are optional on the SR. Other Nissans Got Awards, TooThe Sentra wasn't the only Nissan model that received accolades from the IIHS in its most recent tests. The Murano, Pathfinder, and Armada also performed well above the institute's tough standards. For Murano and Pathfinder, those crossovers were also awarded the Top Safety Pick+. Those models were retested after the IIHS implemented new standards, but still managed to retain its high ratings. As for the Armada, that one got the Top Safety Pick, just a step below the top award. That said, you can bet Nissan is finding ways to make its flagship SUV get the Top Safety Pick+ award the next time the IIHS tests it again. View the full article

World’s Largest Battery Maker Says America Can’t Build EVs Without China
The founder and chairman of CATL, the world’s largest EV battery manufacturer, believes the protectionist measures the US has taken in recent years to prevent Chinese EVs and batteries from penetrating the market will hurt the US auto industry more in the long term. In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Robin Zeng, who is China’s fourth richest man, said the American EV market is doomed without CATL. While the Biden and Trump administrations have imposed prohibitive tariffs on Chinese-made EVs and batteries, treating CATL as a national security threat, Zeng is confident the tide will turn. CATL, which stands for Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited, posted a record profit of more than $10 billion in 2025 as an estimated one in three electric vehicles sold globally is powered by its batteries. What makes this even more remarkable is the fact the Chinese company achieved this milestone without the US market, where EV adoption lags behind that in China and Europe, and where CATL’s presence is limited. US Automakers Already Turning to CATL Despite Prohibitive Import Tariffs Zeng believes that won’t last, though. He expects the US EV market to remain small for several years. “But after that, it’ll have to be booming, because it is the trend. It is the future,” CATL’s boss told WSJ. And it can’t do that without CATL's batteries. Attempting to accomplish that “is difficult and the cost too high,” he added. There are signs automakers are already turning to CATL in the United States. Ford recently dropped South Korea’s SK Group as a joint-venture partner for battery projects, focusing on a plan to build CATL-designed lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) batteries at a new plant in Michigan. To make it happen, Ford is paying CATL intellectual property royalties, which is something the US allows as it builds legal and political hurdles to prevent the Chinese battery giant from setting foot into the market. While LFP technology was invented in the US, the Chinese perfected it and figured out how to make it work in cars. Lisa Drake, a Ford executive on the Michigan battery plant, said last year that without CATL “it probably would’ve taken us a decade to catch up and have LFP technology on our own.” In addition, Ford turned to CATL technology to build utility-scale stationary batteries at a new $5.8 billion Kentucky factory where it shut down EV-battery production recently. General Motors General Motors is also using CATL-sourced LFP batteries in the 2027 Chevrolet Bolt, but unlike Ford, it imports them from China under a temporary arrangement that is designed to maintain a low purchase price for its entry-level EV before it shifts to domestic LFP cell production. GM is importing the China-made batteries legally, but it does so while paying a 60% tariff. The fact that GM does this while its two billion-dollar US battery plants are idle highlights its inability to produce cheaper batteries. Tesla is another US company using CATL technology for a battery plant in Nevada that makes energy-storage systems. CATL Boss Says America May Change Its Tune Come 2028 CATL While critics of China argue that CATL’s presence in the US supply chain would allow the battery giant to rule the battery market in America and prevent domestic battery companies from catching up, those who advocate for cooperation with CATL believe the company is key to make cheaper batteries and affordable EVs possible in the US. Shutting the door may result in the US failing to ever catch up to China, according to the latter group. For now, CATL founder Robin Zeng is adamant Americans need CATL because it can supply them with the latest battery tech at lower costs. This is critical for high-end EVs and robotaxis, for example, almost all of which are EVs. If Americans abandon EVs, they would automatically lag behind in the autonomous driving race. Zeng said CATL is willing to invest in the US, but currently it’s not allowed to build factories in the country. That said, he told WSJ that things may change come 2028—the last full year of US President Donald Trump’s second term—“because business relationships are always stronger and longer-lasting than politicians.” View the full article

Toyota Land Cruiser FJ Is a Customizable Off-Road Toy America’s Missing Out On
Not Just Another Entry-Level Land CruiserIn stock form, the Land Cruiser FJ already shows what Toyota is going for. It’s smaller, easier to handle, and sits below the American Land Cruiser. But seeing it in Thailand, surrounded by finished builds and accessories, changes how I see it. The new FJ isn't an entry-level Land Cruiser – it’s meant to be an off-road toy. Up close, the proportions stand out even more than those of the well-loved Suzuki Jimny. It looks like something you’d actually want to take down narrow trails, not just park and look at. Toyota clearly designed it for easy modification, so it’s less a budget Land Cruiser and more a blank canvas. That’s what makes it tough for those interested Americans. This is the kind of simple, rugged, customizable 4x4 right in the alley of enthusiasts, but Toyota is building it mainly for Southeast Asia. It’s made in Thailand with many local parts and intended for export, but not for markets with stricter rules. Jacob Oliva/Autoblog View the 3 images of this gallery on the original article Four Personalities, One PlatformToyota isn’t just all talk with the customizations – it brought four versions of the FJ, each built for a different kind of owner. The Meridian is the most direct take. It’s lifted, armored, and set up for real off-road use. This one sticks closest to the Land Cruiser’s roots: functional, tough, and not trying to be anything else. The Nature Explorer is built less for rock crawling and more for staying out in the wild. Roof racks, storage, and other details turn the FJ into a mobile basecamp. It’s made for people who want to spend time outdoors, not just get there. The Legendary goes for nostalgia. Retro details and classic touches nod to the 40 Series, such as the round headlights, the chrome wheels, and even the khaki paint job. The base design already hints at that heritage, so these extras fit right in. The Street Cruiser is the most unexpected. It uses the same rugged base but shifts toward an urban, expressive look. Different wheels, cleaner finishes, and a lifestyle-focused approach show the FJ can be playful without losing its edge. Jacob Oliva/Autoblog View the 2 images of this gallery on the original article A Global Idea With Local LimitsOn paper, a compact, ladder-frame Land Cruiser with real off-road gear and lots of customization sounds like something everyone would want. The tried-and-tested IMV platform, manual transfer case, and rear diff lock show this isn’t a watered-down SUV. But those same features make it harder to sell in places with stricter safety and emissions rules. Some regions might not get the FJ at all – not because people don’t want it, but because of regulations. That puts the Land Cruiser FJ in a strange spot. It’s meant to bring in new buyers and reconnect with the Land Cruiser’s playful, enthusiast side. But some of the places that would want it most may never see it in showrooms. That’s why seeing it in Thailand stands out. It’s more than just a new model – it’s a look at a version of the Land Cruiser that most people won’t get to try. Mercedes-Maybach Is Building a $200,000 Luxury Minivan
Mercedes-Benz revealed the new VLE minivan earlier this month, and it will give U.S. customers something different to consider in the luxury class. The VLE is set to become America’s most opulent minivan when it goes on sale, but something even more lavish is coming from Mercedes in the minivan segment. The company has just teased the all-new Mercedes-Maybach VLS, which means the Maybach sub-brand—considered a Bentley and Rolls-Royce competitor—will gain a minivan model for the first time. A Grand Limousine Like No Other Mercedes-Benz Mercedes-Maybach describes the VLS as a Grand Limousine, a lofty statement but one which fits the standard to which Maybachs have always been built. The teaser only shows what appears to be the rearmost pillar, which has the Maybach emblem affixed to it. “The all-new Mercedes‑Maybach VLS delivers an exceptional sense of space with unrivaled exclusivity, welcoming passengers into a completely new world of comfort and digital sophistication,” said the official press release. “This extravagant Grand Limousine transforms the generous space into an extraordinary private lounge with everything that characterizes a Mercedes‑Maybach.” Mercedes made mention of the Vision V concept, revealed last year and expected to provide the basis for the production Maybach VLS. The tapering rear window line of the concept certainly resembles the teaser image of the production model. The Vision V is electric, so we can expect the same from the Maybach VLS—a silent electric powertrain suits an ultra-luxury model, anyway. The VLE already makes up to 409 horsepower in dual-motor guise, so the Maybach VLS will very likely exceed this. Mercedes-Benz Vision V Mercedes-Benz View the 3 images of this gallery on the original article The Vision V concept’s jaw-dropping interior was described as a “private lounge”, and it looks that way with its plush seating, retractable 4K cinema screen, and world-class materials. If you thought the VLE was impressive, the Maybach VLS completely throws out the minivan rulebook. Mercedes mentioned “an uncompromising commitment to the rear passenger”, leading us to believe the Maybach VLS will sacrifice maximum seating capacity for ultimate comfort; the concept only accommodates four people, unlike traditional minivans. Related: 2027 Mercedes-Maybach S-Class Gets Major Luxury Update to Rival Rolls-Royce Estimated Launch Date and Pricing Mercedes-Maybach Mercedes has not yet confirmed when the new Maybach VLS will be released, but even the regular VLS-Class has not been revealed yet, so we expect both to be shown in full later this year. That could set the luxury minivans up for a 2027 arrival, but Mercedes-Maybach didn’t explicitly state whether the Maybach VLS is coming to the United States. If it does, expect an enormous price tag. The Maybach EQS electric SUV starts at $180,000, and the VLS is expected to offer an even superior VIP experience. We expect the starting price to exceed $200,000, with the top model possibly surpassing the $244,400 you’ll pay for the V12-powered Maybach S680 sedan. If Lexus puts the dramatic LS Concept minivan into production, it’ll be one of the closest things to the Maybach VLS—in this market, at least. High-end luxury minivans are far more popular in China, but U.S. customers may soon find out what they’ve been missing. View the full article

Mazda Just Beat Every Other Car Brand in Safety Awards
Make It Three StraightMazda has earned the most Top Safety Pick+ awards from the IIHS this year, marking the third consecutive year the automaker has led the industry. A total of eight models have received the honor so far, surpassing brands like Hyundai and Audi, which have six each. The list of Top Safety Pick+ recipients includes the 2026 Mazda3 Sedan, Mazda3 Hatchback, CX-30, CX-50, CX-70, CX-70 PHEV, CX-90, and CX-90 PHEV. Genesis ranks fourth with five models, followed by Kia with four, Nissan and Subaru with three each, and BMW and Honda with two each. Infiniti, Lexus, Rivian, Tesla, Toyota, and Volvo each have one winner. That brings the total to 45 Top Safety Pick+ awardees so far, with 18 other models earning the lower-tier Top Safety Pick – though both awards reflect strong performance in crash tests. Raising the Bar on SafetyMazda kept the streak despite the IIHS imposing stricter requirements for earning the 2026 Top Safety Pick+ award. According to the press release, the revised criteria aim to improve crash avoidance and rear-seat passenger protection. The IIHS also requires front crash prevention systems to come standard for a vehicle to qualify for an award. As such, the Japanese marque noted that all of its new models come standard with advanced driver-assistance features, including Lane Departure Warning and Smart Brake Support. Since 2008, the company has earned 99 Top Safety Pick awards, 73 of them Top Safety Pick+ honors. Commenting on this year’s eight winners, Jennifer Morrison, director of vehicle safety strategy at Mazda North American Operations, said, “Earning eight Top Safety Pick+ awards shows what happens when you stay true to your philosophy: driving stays engaging, and families stay protected.” Mazda Safety Without the PremiumThis year, the IIHS has emphasized that class-leading safety does not have to come with a high price tag. Citing the average new-car price in the U.S., which topped $50,000 last year, the nonprofit noted that more than a dozen models starting under $30,000 earned the 2026 Top Safety Pick+ award. In Mazda’s own lineup, four 2026 Top Safety Pick+ winners start at under $30,000. They include the Mazda3 at $24,550, Mazda3 Hatchback at $25,550, CX-30 at $25,975, and CX-50 at $29,900, all before destination fees. IIHS President David Harkey said, “They (Mazda) are providing consumers with the best in safety features at a range of prices.” Chase Bierenkoven View the 4 images of this gallery on the original article View the full article

2026 Dodge Durango R/T 392 Orders Open—No Rival Comes Close Under $50K
The Dodge Durango has always stood out in the three-row SUV segment for its brutish design and high-horsepower engines, and now one of the most appealing models in the lineup has gone on sale. You can finally order the new Durango R/T 392 in all 50 states, which is available in Launch Edition or Launch Edition Premium variations. The highlight is the iconic 392-cubic-inch Hemi V8, which is standard on the Durango R/T for the first time. At just under $50,000, no other gas-powered three-row SUV comes close in terms of sheer grunt. Hemi V8 Dominates Stellantis The 6.4-liter Hemi V8 delivers 475 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque, which is enough to get this family-friendly vehicle from 0-60 mph in just 4.4 seconds. It has an NHRA-certified quarter-mile time of only 12.9 seconds. Compared to the 2025 Durango R/T, this 2026 model is 32% more powerful and 21% more torquey. To complement its incredible power, the R/T 392 Launch Edition adds equipment like an adaptive damping high-performance suspension, Brembo brakes with red calipers, an electronic limited-slip rear axle, and a high-performance exhaust to amplify the legendary exhaust note. Power is routed to all four corners via an eight-speed automatic. It’s not only fast (the top speed is 160 mph), but it’s capable, too—this Dodge SUV can tow up to 8,700 lbs, a 20% improvement over the 2025 R/T. “The new Durango R/T 392 Launch Edition instantly sets the value‑performance benchmark for three‑row SUVs,” said Matt McAlear, Dodge CEO. “As the only muscle SUV of its kind — with a heart‑pounding 4.4‑second 0-60 and an NHRA-certified 12.9‑second quarter-mile — the Durango R/T 392 brings authentic Dodge muscle to more drivers than ever.” Related: HEMI Is Back in a Big Way: Stellantis Targets 100,000+ V8 Engines for 2026 Durango R/T Pricing and Features Stellantis The 2026 Dodge Durango R/T 392 Launch Edition starts at just $49,995, which is terrific value considering the performance on tap. In fact, Dodge says no other rival offers as much power under $50k. Buyers seeking more comfort and features can opt for the Launch Edition Premium derivative, which starts at $57,595. The standard version already has Nappa leather and suede seats with heating/ventilation, along with second-row heated seats. The Premium adds a host of desirable extras, though, including: 18-speaker Harman Kardon sound systemLeather-wrapped instrument panel and door trimCarbon-fiber interior accentsSunroofSuede headlinerTrailer Tow PackageFull ADAS suite, including adaptive cruise control and lane departure warningTo put the Durango R/T 392’s value proposition into perspective, let’s look at the Ford Explorer—the most popular three-row SUV in America in 2025. At under $50,000, the most power you’ll get from the Ford is 300 hp/311 lb-ft from the 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine. That’s in the Explorer Tremor, which starts at $48,965. If you want this model with Ford’s 400-hp EcoBoost V6, the price goes up by a massive $11,850. Even then, it won’t match the power of the Durango R/T. Final Thoughts Stellantis Dodge CEO Matt McAlear said earlier this month that the brand would be doubling down on its goal to be America’s leading performance brand. Despite the Durango being the company’s most practical model by far, it also needs to exhibit this performance focus, and that’s where new releases like the Durango R/T 392 come in. Dodge has also played around with the Durango’s powertrain offerings a few times over the last year in response to customer demand—at some point, every single Durango had a V8. The strategy is working, as the Durango had its best annual sales in 20 years last year. The new R/T 392 will add to that—and it may just be the pick of the lineup right now. View the full article

BMW Wants to Sell More Wagons in America
Station wagons have been completely eclipsed by crossovers and SUVs, which offer a more commanding driving position along with impressive cargo capacity, but according to BMW, American buyers couldn't care less about the practicality of a wagon, and the German automaker wants to offer more of them to U.S. customers. Speaking with CarBuzz, BMW's Senior VP of Brand and Product Management, Bernd Koerber, said that Americans are more interested in the way Munich's wagons look than how useful they are, and the brand hopes to be able to provide more longroof options to them in the near future. Does that mean we'll get an M3 Touring (wagon) at long last? Let's see. Well-Heeled Americans Like the Look (and Performance) of BMW Wagons BMW According to Koerber, "The reasons for buying a Touring in the U.S. are totally different. It's purely the shape, whereas in Europe, you have the combination of shape, functionality, and long-distance traveling." In other words, most American buyers of BMW wagons aren't using the additional cargo capacity for errands or long-distance trips. They simply like the way they look and, with German automakers' offerings at least, the performance they offer. "It looks like Touring is becoming a lifestyle thing, and [BMW is] happy to develop on that," added Koerber. This suggests that a longroof version of the latest BMW could reach American shores, though perhaps only when it gets an M badge. Related: BMW Says Americans Don’t Want Long-Wheelbase Cars We've seen this before, with several Audi RS 6 Avant owners using the high-performance wagon exclusively as a toy and their pickups as a tool. Fast wagons are fun, look cool, and can more easily be justified to significant others, while more everyday wagons like those from Volvo, for example, do not sell well enough to justify their continued existence. Another mainstream example is Mazda, which has hinted that wagons might return in the EV age, but that's only because of the modularity and cost-efficiencies that would come with new electric platforms. Meanwhile, Subaru has turned the Outback into an almost-SUV. But let's get back to BMW. BMW Surprised By M5 Touring Success and Wants to Build On It BMW/Fabian Kirchbauer Photography Koerber added that BMW did not expect such an enthusiastic reception to the M5 Touring in the U.S. and the popularity it has seen with buyers, but it's clear that Munich is aware of all the facets that make that car resonate with buyers; "[A] unique shape with high performance seems to be a good mix," said Koerber. This indicates that BMW believes fast wagons will continue to be appreciated by enthusiasts and wants to provide them, but more mainstream, everyday wagons may still be risky. Therefore, don't expect to see non-M wagons on sale here for some time yet. Over at Audi, the new RS 5 will not reach North America in wagon form. Either Audi remains timid about its prospects, or it's worried that the smaller wagon could hurt sales of the next RS 6. But if BMW continues to be successful with wagons in the U.S. and someday even offers an M3 Touring here, perhaps Ingolstadt will feel the need to provide an alternative. Either way, new platforms and a resurgent taste for the wagon could result in the perfect storm for station wagon fans before long. 2027 Chrysler Pacifica Facelift Debuts Next Week in New York
The Chrysler Pacifica is about to enter its 10th model year on sale, but Stellantis shows no sign of winding down the minivan, especially because it still remains the sole model in Chrysler’s stable, and its modest but consistent sales success seems to be pointing towards a quiet renaissance for the minivan genre. In fact, the Pacifica is just about to undergo its second major facelift, something we’ve already had a more than adequate look at in official imagery and had plenty of info on, including the trim levels and pricing. Despite that, though, the 2027 Pacifica still hasn’t been ‘officially’ revealed, but that’ll change when the model makes its public debut at the New York International Auto Show on 1 April. Pacifica Turns 10 Chrysler There shouldn’t be many surprises in store when the new Pacifica officially arrives next week. We’ve already seen the front of the car from plenty of angles, getting a good look at its angular new front treatment, complete with a full-width light bar. That said, it remains to be seen whether the rear of the vehicle gets a similarly sharp-looking overhaul. Things look much more familiar on the inside, where leaked photos have shown a cabin largely identical to the outgoing car. The model range will remain largely the same, although the base model Voyager – marketed for several years as a separate, budget-friendly model but really just a less well-equipped Pacifica maintaining the original 2017 model’s styling – is dead, and set to be replaced by an entry-level Pacifica LX trim. It’s likely to retain the same long-serving 3.6-liter V6 and 9-speed automatic transmission, driving the front wheels as standard with all-wheel drive optional on higher spec models. Don’t, however, expect to see a return of the Pacifica Hybrid, as Stellantis has killed off all its North American-market PHEVs with no immediate plans for their return. Other New York Debuts for Stellantis Stellantis The 2027 Pacifica is undoubtedly the biggest new arrival for Stellantis at the New York Show, but the company has a few other new models planned. There’s a special edition Dodge Durango in the works marking the US’ 250th anniversary called the America250, and it’ll also serve as the public debut for the Charger’s new color-shifting Sub-Zero paint option. Elsewhere, a selection of already-revealed models are making their first public appearances in the US, including the reborn Ram ProMaster City and the facelifted Alfa Romeo Tonale. The show opens to the public on Friday April 3, at its long-time home, Manhattan’s Javits Center. View the full article

2022-2024 Lexus LX Airbag Recall: What Owners Should Know
Toyota has announced a noncompliance safety recall for the Lexus LX, the company’s most luxurious and expensive SUV in the United States. The issue revolves around the front passenger-side airbag, which may not deploy correctly in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injury for anyone in that seat. While some airbag-related recalls can affect hundreds of thousands of models, a much smaller number of LX SUVs are affected by this one, but that doesn't mean owners shouldn't take it seriously. Here’s everything you need to know. Lexus LX Airbag Recall Lexus The noncompliance safety recall affects 2022-2024 Lexus LX models, representing the first few model years of the existing LX generation. In total, 15,300 LX models in the U.S. are involved in this recall. The Occupant Classification System (OCS) in the front passenger seat may not function correctly in certain scenarios, which can affect the correct deployment of the airbag. This noncompliance with a federal safety standard has compelled Toyota to issue the recall. Dealers will inspect affected components and replace the seat frame assembly free of charge, if necessary. Owner notification letters are due to be sent out by late May 2026, but anyone driving a 2022-2024 Lexus LX can contact the customer support line on 1-800-255-3987 before then for more information. Owners can also check if their vehicles are affected via the Toyota or National Highway Traffic Administration websites, using their Vehicle Identification Number. Until vehicles are inspected, we recommend owners of Lexus LX vehicles seat passengers in another seat besides the front one, where possible. Related: Lexus LX 600 Recalled Over Transmission Software That Could Cause Damage What Is The Occupant Classification System (OCS)? Lexus The OCS system uses an array of sensors to detect the presence of a passenger in a specific seat. If no passenger is detected, the passenger-side airbag can be disabled. In many modern vehicles, the weight and size of an occupant can also be detected, which can dictate the deployment force of the airbag. This is important if, for instance, a smaller child is seated in front, as they’d be more vulnerable to the full force of an inflated airbag. Toyota did not go into great detail about the precise problem, but it did mention replacing the seat frame assembly. A fault with this part has likely been found to interfere with the sensors’ ability to accurately classify the occupant, thereby leading to improper airbag deployment. Although the Lexus LX has not been evaluated by the NHTSA or IIHS for crash safety, there’s no reason to doubt its safety credentials when all systems are functioning properly. It’s comprehensively equipped with a full suite of safety equipment, and smaller Lexus SUVs like the RX and NX have already achieved Top Safety Pick awards from the IIHS. View the full article

NASCAR isn't the only reason drivers reconsider fighting
In real time, upon leaving the infield care center at Darlington Raceway on Friday night, Ben Rhodes wanted to find Tyler Ankrum after the NASCAR Truck Series race to express some displeasure with some fisticuffs but quickly thought better of it. “So, yeah, I would love to go get myself a penalty and fight right now, but that's $75,000, so we won't be doing that,” Rhodes said. “Yeah ...Keep readingView the full article

Jay Leno Drives Tesla Semi With Battery Designed to Last 1 Million Miles
We’ve seen Jay Leno drive all sorts of rare and exotic cars over the years, but the episodes that stand out the most are always those that feature unexpected vehicles, such as tractors, buses, semi trucks, fire engines, tanks, and even steam locomotives. You probably remember Jay Leno drove a pre-production version of the Tesla Semi Class 8 electric truck in October 2023 in a famous episode that saw the famous car collector and TV personality towing a trailer with another Tesla Semi on it. That made for great television and gave people an idea of what the Semi is all about. Jay Leno Is the First Person Outside of Tesla to Drive a Production-Spec SemiWell, the Tesla Semi is back at Jay Leno’s Garage, and this time we’re talking the final, facelifted version—by the way, is this the first vehicle that received a facelift before even becoming available to the general public? After approximately three years of pilot programs, the Semi appears to be finally ready for prime time as it is set to begin high-volume production this year at Gigafactory Nevada, with a target output of 50,000 units per year. Jay Leno’s contact with the finished production-spec Semi is very informative, as we get to learn a lot of new info from Tesla Semi program director Dan Priestley and Tesla’s director of styling, Franz von Holzhausen. If you’re an electric truck nerd, you’ll love this video, but even if you’re not, you’ll learn some surprising things about the Semi. Jay Leno's Garage / YouTube For example, Priestley told Jay Leno the Semi team managed to cut 1,000 pounds of weight from the truck since the October 2023 visit, bringing the 500-mile version to payload parity with diesel-powered Class 8 trucks. Mind you, there’s a significant clarification to be made here: the parity is achieved after a 2,000-lb federal weight exemption is factored in; still, it’s an important achievement that will no doubt help the Semi’s case in the market. The 325-mile standard-range version of the Semi is obviously lighter as it removes one of the three parallel battery packs and reduces the wheelbase. The latter helps the entry-level Semi achieve a turning radius comparable to that of a Model 3 or Model Y, and Jay Leno got to experience that first-hand. Tesla research shows Class 8 truck customers want to be able to haul payloads of 45,000 lbs, and the 500-mile Semi is perfectly capable of doing so, Priestley said. Jay Leno was impressed, and the title of his video—“The Death of Diesel?”—pretty much says it all. The Highest-Mileage Truck in the Tesla Semi Fleet Is at 440,000 Miles We also learn from the video that the recent facelift has improved the Tesla Semi’s drag coefficient by 7% to 0.4, which is impressive for a semi truck. That translates into more efficiency and a slightly smaller battery, freeing up payload capacity in the process. There’s a lot to unpack from the video, including the fact that Tesla is considering offering inductive charging for the Semi, something that's reportedly back in the cards for the Cybertruck as well. Currently, the Semi can charge at 1.2 megawatts at Megacharger stations, adding 300 miles of range in just 30 minutes. The structural battery pack is designed to last 1 million miles in its original duty cycle; that's one of the Semi’s key USPs for fleet operators. Jay Leno's Garage / YouTube Tesla execs wouldn’t say how many Semis are currently on the road, with Priestley noting that “a few hundred” were made since October 2023. He did say that there’s “ample demand” for it, including from independent truck operators. The Tesla Semi fleet has covered a total of over 13.5 million miles, with the highest-mileage truck hitting almost 440,000 miles. Check out the video to learn more about the Semi, including its clever dual-axle powertrain, interior features, Cybertruck commonalities, and costs. No prices were disclosed, but a previous Electrek report estimated the 325-mile Semi would start at around $260,000, while the 500-mile version would be priced from $290,000. Are EVs Really Greener? Mercedes Says Yes With the New Electric GLC
Targeting the EV Carbon Problem Head-OnSince electric vehicles became more widespread at the start of the decade, so has the debate over whether EVs are actually more environmentally friendly. Some argue that EV production generates so much carbon upfront that, over time, their overall carbon footprint may end up being no better than that of internal combustion engine vehicles. At Mercedes-Benz, however, the German marque is drawing a clear distinction with the new electric GLC, which, based on its 360° environmental check, produces a significantly lower carbon footprint than its ICE counterpart. According to independently verified environmental balance documents, the GLC 400 4MATIC with EQ technology reduces its carbon footprint by roughly two-thirds over its entire life cycle compared to the current combustion-powered GLC. This is partly due to a 23 percent reduction in production-related emissions. Beyond that, the EV produces no tailpipe emissions in everyday use. Mercedes-Benz How Mercedes Cut the CarbonMercedes-Benz achieved this through four key measures. The first is cutting the CO2 footprint of each battery cell by about 40 percent compared to conventional production, made possible by using renewable energy in cell manufacturing and sourcing lower-CO2 materials for the cathode, anode, and cell housing. Second is the increased use of recycled materials, including 61 kilograms (134 lbs) of secondary material in thermoplastics, with around 35 percent coming from used consumer products. Next is the use of more sustainable aluminum, with two-thirds of the material produced in electrolysis plants powered by renewable energy. Lastly, the EV features a vegan interior that was independently verified by the Vegan Society, confirming that no animal-derived materials were used. Mercedes-Benz More Than Just an Eco PlayThe new electric GLC is one of Mercedes-Benz’s latest EVs, embracing a thoroughly digital approach with AI-driven technology and the 39.1-inch MBUX Hyperscreen. Built on an 800-volt architecture, the EV can recover up to 188 miles of range in just 10 minutes of charging. It also offers up to 400 miles of range under the European test cycle and delivers 483 horsepower, giving it a slight edge over its direct rival, the BMW iX3, at least on paper. Both all-electric luxury compact crossovers are expected to arrive in the U.S. this year. Thanks to the automaker's transparent 360° environmental assessment – conducted since 2005 – buyers who may be looking beyond powertrain specs and are more mindful of environmental impact can make a more informed purchase. The Next Mazda MX-5 Will Be Even Lighter Than Today's Miata
Incessant car bloat is an enemy that every new car battles and typically loses to, with additional safety equipment and the advent of electrification adding hundreds or even thousands of pounds to the curb weight with each new generation—just look at the new Audi RS 5, which now tips the scales at almost 5,200 pounds in sedan form, compared to under 4,100 lbs for its B9 Sportback non-hybrid predecessor. A notable exception to this trend is the Mazda MX-5 Miata, which is lighter in current ND form (2,182-2,341 lbs, depending on global spec) than its NC predecessor (up to 2,498 lbs), and the car that replaces it could be just as much of a featherweight—or even more so compared to today's U.S. model. Mazda Promises New MX-5 Will Weigh Less Than 2,200 Pounds Mazda Manabu Osuga, Mazda's General Manager of Global Sales and Marketing, told Australian publication GoAuto that the Japanese automaker is already working on the new MX-5, adding an exciting promise: "I can tell you that we are sticking with a car that will be under one tonne of weight ... employing our 'gram strategy' as we did with the current series." 1,000 kilograms translates to 2,204 lbs, and a new Miata under that threshold would be even lighter than the ND3 currently on sale in the U.S. This isn't without its challenges. Related: I Drove the Slowest Mazda MX-5, Here's My Honest Review "Global environmental regulations are getting tougher, as are safety protocols, which don't [necessarily correlate] to a car that is designed for pure fun," said Osuga. Crash structures, driver assistance tech, and emissions standards all pile on the pounds, but Mazda is adamant that the next MX-5 can at least avoid electrification a little longer. Next Mazda MX-5 Won't Be a Hybrid; Turbo Maybe? Mazda The executive went on to say that Mazda is continually evaluating electrification technology and may "think about it" in the future if it suits the ethos of the MX-5—"I'm not going to say there isn't any possibility [that electrification could be offered in the future]"— but at the present moment, "that technology is very heavy, and if we apply that to the MX-5, we will not satisfy our fans." The Miata is a cult car beloved for its deft handling, and while solid-state batteries are showing promise, no hybrid or all-electric tech is yet light enough for the sports car. Therefore, "at this moment, the internal combustion engine is the way," said Osuga. But what sort of combustion engine? If Mazda intends to offer MX-5 buyers the same or even less weight while still making the car compliant for another decade (the ND was revealed way back in 2014, so it's had a long life cycle that its successor will no doubt try to emulate), one can't help but wonder if Mazda will be forced to dilute the MX-5 recipe with forced induction. That may be just as offensive to die-hard Miata fans, but it would doubtless be better than a battery pack, and if the turbo is tuned well enough, power delivery may feel linear enough. Synthetic fuel is another idea that has been floated by Mazda execs. When we will find out what's next for the world's best-selling two-seat sports car, however, is a mystery, as Osuga said, "I can't share with you exactly when the new MX-5 will arrive, [only] that we are working on it." Stay tuned. View the full article

I Didn’t Like the New BMW iX3 Until I Saw It in Person
First Impressions Don’t Last When it comes to BMW, first impressions are never final – take the Bangle Bimmers as an example. The brand has proven time and time again that the first (internet) impressions won’t ever dictate how well a product eventually does, or how it will factor into the cultural zeitgeist – at least that’s what I tried to tell myself while approaching the first of the “Neue Klasse” BMWs, the 2026 iX3. Now, if you ask me, the E46 generation is the most influential modern Bimmer in my mind, so when the brand unveiled the iX3 and i3, it left me with mixed feelings. The Bangkok International Motor Show (BIMS) set the stage for my first encounter with the “Neue” iX3, and safe to say, I was half impressed. Earl Lee/Autoblog View the 5 images of this gallery on the original article BMW Sells What Sells It’s easy to get lost in the noise of online traffic at times. The vocal minority often creates an environment that can feel constricting at times, and the reception of the i3 weighed heavily on my mind as I picked apart the iX3. The pre-orders tell a different story. People are lining up to buy the “Neue” all-electric BMW crossover, and that fact also rang true with the number of people at BIMS crowding around BMW’s electric volume seller. Now, I don’t want to say that the enthusiasts’ perspective is totally invalid. I, too, have my dislikes when it comes to BMW’s “Neue Klasse,” but after seeing it in the metal, I have some things to say. Earl Lee/Autoblog Better in PersonAs cliché as it sounds, photos do not do it justice. I appreciate the progressive design that BMW took, while paying homage to the past. Modern, sleek, quite stocky, but all in all, the exterior design didn’t feel as shouty as I thought it would. Understated it is not, but I guess that’s where many European brands are headed nowadays. The iX3's front-end is mostly positive. It caught my eye, and I had to do multiple takes while I was at it. Compared to the previous-generation iX3, it looked a lot more special. It’s no longer a “grille” that dominates the front, and it is what it is now: a piece that highlights BMW’s heritage in LED lights rather than huge slabs of plastic that serve little to no purpose. I’m not a huge fan of how the headlights are integrated because they hide their “eyes” a bit, but I won’t lose sleep over it. However, BMW, why oh why did you put the front camera of the iX3 off-center? Seriously? The rear lights are just right in my opinion. I am a fan of how they look, and they're distinct enough without trying too hard. Overall, I like the direction the iX3 is going, and I think the designers did well enough to keep things functional while retaining the brand’s upmarket, progressive appeal. Classic BMW heads may not agree. Earl Lee/Autoblog What the Hockenheim… While I will laud BMW for the iX3’s exterior design, it kinda stops there. I’m no stranger to the wonderful world of “Tesla-fying” interiors, and I have to say it’s very annoying. BMW locked the air-vent direction controls behind the massive 18-inch touchscreen. I hate how the industry is doing this, and you cannot change my mind. Anyway, aside from the fact that a lot of the iX3’s features require you to grease up a pane of glass, I’m rather impressed by the Panoramic Vision HUD. I thought it might be blurry, but there is a blacked-out section of the windshield that keeps things clear as day. I dig the implementation of this, but after gawking at that for a bit, I went back to nitpicking. I am quite perplexed by the interior design of the iX3. On the one hand, the ergonomics are sound, and it feels rock-solid, but the steering wheel design is just too garish for me. Some may say “futuristic,” others may say "opulent," but to me, it’s just distracting. It’s the car equivalent of wearing a Richard Mille with a white t-shirt, a pair of jeans, and some if-you-know-you-know brand shoes. The rest of the interior is simple, elegant, and ergonomically sound. It’s a nice place to be, and BMW did a good job at making it approachable. When all the drive modes and climate control vents are in place, the interior is very straightforward and cohesive with the rest of the car – but again, “a Richard Mille with a white t-shirt.” I find the brown interior option a little more inviting. The color palette steals my attention away from the overly complex steering wheel, and I think it would be my pick if ever I were to spec out an iX3 for myself. Plus, I'm not a fan of the black-on-white color scheme. Earl Lee/Autoblog View the 13 images of this gallery on the original article First Impressions For Now: Mostly Positive In general, I can see why people were drawn to this car when it first launched. I did a quick online sanity check on what people thought of the design, and there are naysayers, but also a lot of buyers who are excited to get this car in their garages. I’m happy to see BMW returning to smaller kidneys while progressing with their “Neue” design language, but please lose the over-the-top steering wheel design and bring back manual vent controls. I don’t doubt that this will be one of BMW’s best-sellers, and it did give me a good impression. Maybe people will grow to love the steering wheel design, and maybe we’re looking at a future classic. You never know with these BMWs. Earl Lee/Autoblog View the 3 images of this gallery on the original article View the full article

How Volvo Went From the Most Reliable Cars to Near the Bottom
In the 1970s and 80s, Volvo built its reputation on something unfashionable: simplicity. Cars like the 240 were overbuilt, mechanically straightforward, and designed to be fixed rather than replaced. The 940 that followed leaned on familiar components, while many competitors were already introducing increasingly complex electronics and untested systems. That conservatism was very much part of the product. And for decades, it worked brilliantly. Now, in 2026, Volvo sits second from the bottom of the JD Power US Vehicle Dependability Study, with owners reporting 296 problems per 100 vehicles against an industry average of 204. The line between that fall and the tech revolution Volvo bet everything on is a pretty clear trajectory. Bring A Trailer View the 2 images of this gallery on the original article The Inflection Point Was a Beautiful New PlatformWhen Geely took over Volvo’s reins from Ford in 2010, the mood was optimistic. Volvo's new Scalable Product Architecture (SPA), an $11 billion investment, underpinned the all-new 2016 XC90 and was intended to roll across the entire lineup, bringing with it connected car technologies, world-first safety features, and premium interior design. With it, Volvo had committed fully to its new identity as a technology-forward luxury brand, complete with minimalist Scandinavian cabins stripped of physical buttons, centred around large touchscreens. The aesthetic was gorgeous. The execution, it turned out, was another matter entirely. View the 3 images of this gallery on the original article Early SPA cars suffered from engine and hybrid system issues, but the bigger problem was software. Infotainment systems froze, rebooted, and in some cases failed before delivery. The shift to Android Automotive didn’t solve it; if anything, it introduced new points of failure. By 2019, Volvo had fallen to third from the very bottom in JD Power's reliability study covering 2016 model-year cars, and the scores have barely recovered since. This Isn't Just a Volvo ProblemAccording to JD Power's most recent dependability research, vehicle reliability is trending in the wrong direction across the board, with infotainment systems easily identified as the biggest area of failure. Even Toyota, for years the benchmark of dependable engineering, hasn't been immune. Starting with the redesigned 2022 Tundra, Toyota redesigned nearly every vehicle in its lineup, and Consumer Reports subsequently removed Toyota from its top reliability position. Subaru, by contrast, took a deliberately conservative approach with proven shared parts, and climbed to the top of the rankings precisely by doing what Toyota used to do. Toyota The pattern is consistent everywhere you look. Brands that chase complexity lose ground.
