Ferrari Is Recalling Its New V12 Because the Windows Are Too Dark
Long gone are the days when Italian exotics had a reputation for being heinously unreliable and bursting into flames if you looked at them the wrong way, but even so, Ferrari faces a recall in 2026. The company has been producing sports cars since 1947, but it still gets things wrong from time to time, and the reason the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has published a recall for the 12Cilindri is comically basic: its rear and side windows have been tinted too heavily. But unlike aftermarket tint that can simply be pulled off and cleaned, Ferrari will have to replace the glass on noncompliant vehicles. That's because this privacy glass was never even meant to reach North America. A Handful of Ferraris with a Federal Headache duPont Registry Specifically, 80 examples of 2025-2026 12Cilindri vehicles are being recalled because "the rear and side windows have less than 70% light transmittance." Obviously, this can obscure or impair driver visibility, but it also means the cars fail to meet the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 205, which applies to glazing materials. The 6.5-liter naturally aspirated V12 (a rare commodity these days) produces 819 horsepower and catapults the car from rest to 62 mph in just 2.9 seconds, with a top speed of over 211 mph. With such blistering performance, it helps to be able to see what's around you. Interestingly, it seems that only the U.S. market is affected by this issue, which the recall report says was caused by "a wrong configuration of the model technical features." Related: Ferrari 296 Challenge Stradale Could Outgun the V12 12Cilindri Basically, it looks like privacy glass that may be legal in other countries was inadvertently fitted to cars headed for America. As the above image shows, vehicles with the correct windows kinda mess with the look that Ferrari is going for in blending the glasshouse into the roof, rear quarters, and spoiler. But rules are rules. Customers Must Wait Until May for Their Ferraris to Be Made Legal Ferrari Unfortunately for those who may be accustomed to being attended to at the snap of a finger, Ferrari dealer and customer remedy notifications are only planned to be sent on May 15. That means nearly two months of waiting, though we doubt it will make much difference to their lives. Either they'll ignore the potential (albeit relatively minor) risks that come with driving with glass that's too blackened—the windshield is not affected by this oversight—or they'll simply choose something else to get around in. After all, most Ferrari owners have several cars to choose from. Hopefully, the Ferrari EV, which is named after the Italian word for light, Luce, won't have the same problem. Bad joke. Sorry. Ford Maverick Recalled Because Its Moonroof Could Fly Off
The Maverick Gets Caught in the Recall CycleDue to the high number of recalls in recent years, Ford clarified that its safety campaigns are a proactive and intentional effort to address potential risks. Regardless of how one views it, the latest model affected is the Maverick, which is being recalled over a moonroof that could potentially detach from the vehicle. The defect has been assigned NHTSA recall number 26V157, which states that the moonroof module’s glass panel on certain 2025-2026 Maverick models “may be improperly adhered.” If the panel detaches, it could become a road hazard for other motorists and increase the risk of a crash. Where the Problem StartedThe Ford Maverick, along with the Bronco Sport and Mustang Mach-E, are built in Mexico, which exposes the models to import tariffs. Ford’s South American Automotive Safety Office (ASO) first alerted concerned teams on January 23, 2026, after receiving a report of a moonroof glass detachment in Brazil. After working with members of Ford’s Hermosillo Stamping and Assembly Plant (HSAP), the company traced the issue to the supplier’s “urethane curing behavior.” Fortunately, no accidents or injuries related to the defect have been reported. The recall states that 323 Maverick units are potentially affected, with about 63 percent estimated to have the defect. The vehicles were built between April 15 and April 25, 2025, though Ford noted they were not produced in VIN order. As part of the remedy, owners will be asked to bring their compact trucks to a Ford or Lincoln dealer for an inspection, and if the moonroof module’s build date falls within the suspect manufacturing range, the component will be replaced. Cole Attisha The Path to a FixFord will begin notifying owners about the recall between March 30 and April 3, 2026. Owners can also check whether their vehicle is affected by entering their VIN on the NHTSA website. The moonroof is available as a $995 option on the XLT, Lobo, Lariat, and Tremor, leaving out the base XL model, which starts at $28,145 excluding destination fees. The Hyundai Santa Cruz is the Maverick’s sole competitor in the U.S., though reports say the Korean marque may be preparing to drop out of the segment due to underwhelming sales. Volkswagen’s Electric Tiguan Keeps Pretending to Be an ID.4 in New Spy Photos
The first-ever electric Tiguan is rumored to be replacing the Volkswagen ID.4, and our spies have captured it undergoing testing in Sweden once again. This time, the prototype wears silver paint rather than white and has a slightly more aggressive front fascia, with the lower grille border extending deeper down. Could this be a hint that the high-performance Tiguan R will get an all-electric sibling? It seems unlikely, especially since the brakes don't appear to be any beefier, but stranger things have happened. For now, let's focus on what we do know. This is more than just a facelift fo the ID.4, with insiders reporting that this is such a major update that it may as well be considered a new generation. That will help justify the new non-alphanumeric naming strategy, designed to make EVs seem more congruous with gas vehicles. 2027 VW ID.4 Spied with Obviously Fake Styling SH Proshots/Autoblog View the 3 images of this gallery on the original article As we saw in previous spy shots, the electric crossover has been dressed in camouflage that is meant to evoke the existing ID.4. Any time a manufacturer does this, it's a clear sign that things in the cosmetic department will be anything but unchanged. At the front, the bumper and lower intake grille seen here may be what we get on the production model, but the upper section of the fascia will evolve. Through the silver vinyl, we see the outline of the headlights, which appear to be extending deeper into the front fenders. The small section of the daytime running light is peeking through at the top of the cluster, which suggests each headlight will be connected by a narrow LED strip like on the current ID.4 Unlike the current ID.4, it seems that the headlights will have a bigger gap between each other, and this will be filled with a thicker false grille element, which should make the crossover look more aggressive. Related: Volkswagen’s 2027 Atlas Gets a High-Tech Interior With a Hidden Screen At the rear, the bulges under the fake taillight graphics seem to hint at a continuous light bar that wraps around in a rectangular loop, but we'll have to wait for more camouflage to be removed to be sure. What we can seeis that the lower bumper will be more aggressively styled, with each end gaining a notch that should make the back look more rugged. The overall shape and silhouette of the vehicle are mostly unchanged, but small adjustments like these should increase appeal for the pavement-hopping crowd, particularly in the U.S. Expect VW's New Electric Crossover to Be Revealed Before the End of 2026 SH Proshots/Autoblog View the 3 images of this gallery on the original article The new ID.4/ID. Tiguan is expected to arrive for the 2027 model year, which means Volkswagen will probably take the wraps off the electric crossover publicly before the end of this year. The German automaker has already begun sharing images and info about the bigger 2027 Atlas, showing off its interior for the first time this week. That vehicle has a large central infotainment display flanked by a hidden passenger display, and it's possible that a downsized version of this setup may arrive in the new ID.4/ID. Tiguan. We certainly expect physical buttons on the steering wheel, though, as this is something VW buyers have clamored for. We'll bring you more information as we get it, but the new ID.4 will only arrive sometime after the Atlas makes a splash at the New York Auto Show early next month. Hyundai Recalls 2026 Palisade After Fatal Rear Seat Incident Triggered Stop Sale
The 2026 Hyundai Palisade seemingly has it all: good looks, a strong powertrain, and loads of space. But the vehicle that should be a runaway success has an issue that can't be ignored. Hyundai recently told dealers in the U.S. and Canada to stop selling the 2026 Palisade Limited and Calligraphy trims because of a problem with the power seats in the second and third rows, where buyers put their kids. The power-folding system sometimes fails to detect when someone or something is in the way as the seats move, and it's so serious that a young child was tragically killed in a scenario that Hyundai began investigating a week ago. Now, the automaker has issued a recall in collaboration with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Over 61,000 2026 Hyundai Palisade SUVs Recalled Kristen Brown The issue is specific to the abovementioned upper-tier trims of the 2026 Palisade, and the recall applies to 61,093 vehicles, whose one-touch tilt-and-slide or automatic power fold-and-stow functions may fail to detect impediments. Hyundai is taking this very seriously. Along with the stop sales notices, Hyundai has sent texts, emails, and in-vehicle notifications. It's also provided a statement to the media. The recall, warning that power rear seats may trap a person, includes the following advisory: "Owners are advised to exercise caution when operating the second and third row power seat functions until the repair is performed. Children are advised to not be in the rear seats or near the rear seating area during power-folding operation." The recall report notes that an investigation was opened in November last year, which was escalated after the report of the fatality on March 9. Since the issue first appeared, seven incidents of third-row malfunction have been reported, and four reports of minor injury have been reported due to the second-row malfunction. In total, there have been 17 unique vehicles with claims of failure. Unfortunately, Hyundai is still working on a way to permanently resolve the problem. Hyundai Palisade Remedy Being Developed, Temporary Fix Available Kristen Brown For the time being, Hyundai intends to notify owners of a temporary fix available via a software update, which Hyundai Bluelink enrollees can take advantage of remotely, while other customers can come into a dealer for the update. But it will be some time before Palisade owners can relax, as dealers and owners are only expected to be notified of the permanent remedy on May 16. For almost the next two months, an abundance of caution will be prudent. View the full article

Corey Heim wins Darlington Truck race in stunning ninth-to-first charge
Part-time driver (and reigning Truck champion) Corey Heim restarted ninth with two laps to go, but the former Truck champion had slightly fresher tires than those around, immediately going to the bottom and passing several trucks. At that point, Ross Chastain confidently held the lead, and was over half-a-second clear of Heim at the white flag. But the #5 quickly ran him down, blowing by the ...Keep readingView the full article

Lamborghini's 2025 Was Record-Breaking for Sales and Revenue as Profits Slip
Another Year, Another Step UpLamborghini kept its momentum going after a record-setting 2024. In 2025, the brand delivered 10,747 cars – its third year in a row above the 10,000 mark. Not long ago, that would have been headline news. Now, it’s just business as usual. Revenue climbed alongside sales, reaching €3.2 billion ($3.7 billion) – up 3.3% from last year and the highest Lamborghini has ever posted. For a brand that doesn’t chase volume, that kind of growth points to strong demand and the ability to command higher prices, not just bigger production. Lamborghini Profit Takes a Slight Step BackA lot of Lamborghini’s growth this year comes down to what the company is selling. The Revuelto leads as the flagship hybrid, while the Urus SE keeps the numbers up. But the real story is customization: 94% of buyers last year chose at least one Ad Personam option – a big reason margins stay strong. It wasn’t all smooth sailing, though. Lamborghini’s operating income landed at €768 million ($888 million), with margins dipping to 24% – a bit lower than last year. According to the company, currency swings and new US tariffs both took a bite out of profits. Add in the ongoing investment in Lamborghini’s electrification plans – part of the Direzione Cor Tauri strategy – and it’s no surprise costs are starting to show up. Even so, a 24% margin still puts Lamborghini near the top of the luxury world. Careful cost management and a strong product mix helped keep things on track, despite the headwinds. Lamborghini Pushing for Hybrids for NowLooking ahead, there’s no sign Lamborghini is slowing down. The new Temerario hybrid is already reaching customers in early 2026, rounding out a core lineup that’s now fully hybrid with the Revuelto and Urus SE. This also hints at what’s next. Lamborghini has a fourth hybrid on the way and is working on its first full EV, but isn’t in a hurry to get there. For now, Lamborghini’s formula is holding: keep volumes low, offer plenty of ways to personalize, and move toward electrification without losing the drama. The results speak for themselves. Alpina’s First BMW Models Will Start at the Top With the 7 Series and X7
Starting at the Very TopWe all saw it coming, but now it’s confirmed. The first Alpina models under BMW’s full control will be built from the 7 Series sedan and X7 SUV, putting them right at the top of the range. The confirmation came from BMW Group R&D boss Joachim Post in an interview with Autocar, where he outlined the initial direction for what is now effectively “BMW Alpina” following the brand’s transition in-house earlier this year. BMW completed its acquisition of the long-time tuning firm from the Bovensiepen family, formally taking control on January 1. According to Post, the plan is to launch Alpina “from the top of the brand.” That’s a clear signal: Alpina is being set up as a high-end, low-volume choice, not just another performance badge. Technical details are still under wraps, but BMW says it’s keeping options open on the tech front. That means we could see both combustion and electric Alpinas, which makes sense since the 7 Series already comes in both flavors. BMW Alpina Why the 7 Series and X7 Make SenseChoosing the 7 Series and X7 as starting points isn’t just about picking the biggest cars. These two have always been the flagships in Alpina’s lineup, so they’re a natural fit for the brand’s first chapter under BMW. More importantly, these models capture what Alpina is really about. Where BMW’s M cars are all about track days and sharp handling, Alpina has always focused on a different kind of performance – smooth, fast cruising, a comfortable ride, and a level of detail in materials and finish that stands out. BMW’s design chief Oliver Heilmer admitted there were early worries about Alpina and M stepping on each other’s toes. But in reality, they’re aimed at different drivers. M is still the aggressive, purpose-built option, while Alpina is more about maturity, comfort, and a focus on craftsmanship and individuality. BMW Alpina A New Generation is Coming FirstThe timing works out, too. Both the 7 Series and X7 are about to get major updates, with BMW rolling out new design cues and tech from its Neue Klasse direction later this year. That means Alpina’s first in-house models will launch with fresh styling, new interiors, and the latest digital tech – giving them a more advanced starting point than ever before. It also sets the stage for electrification. Since the 7 Series already comes as a fully electric i7, Alpina can jump straight into EV territory without having to reinvent the wheel. Uber's $1.25 Billion Bet on Rivian Robotaxis Puts Pressure on Tesla
Rivian is quickly positioning itself as the pioneer in the autonomy space, and its latest deal with Uber shows just how serious those ambitions are. The two companies are teaming up to deploy thousands of fully autonomous vehicles based on the upcoming Rivian R2, forming the backbone of what could become one of the largest robotaxi networks yet. Uber’s $1.25 Billion Bet On Robotaxis Rivian At the heart of the deal is a long-term investment that could see Uber commit up to $1.25 billion to Rivian by 2031. The rollout begins with around 10,000 R2-based robotaxis, expected to hit cities like San Francisco and Miami in 2028. From there, the plan is to scale aggressively, with as many as 50,000 vehicles operating across roughly 25 cities across the US, Canada, and even Europe. But this isn't Uber's only autonomous endeavor; they also confirmed to deploy a fleet of Volkswagen ID. Buzz robotaxis sometime this year, and is reportedly exploring a similar partnership with Nissan. Not All Self-Driving Systems Are Equal Rivian While many automakers plan to add autonomous driving tech into existing platforms, Rivian engineered its R2 to sport hands-free driving from the start. The R2 will blend cameras, radar, and LiDAR with in-house computing to process real-world data at scale, with the end goal of supporting Level 4 autonomy in controlled environments. Rivals, like Waymo and Tesla, on the other hand, are experiencing some headaches with their autonomous driving tech. In fact, Tesla is currently under investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration following multiple crashes, including one fatal incident linked to its Full Self Driving system. On top of that, Tesla’s Robotaxi program has logged 14 reported incidents since its June 2025 launch. However, those cars still rely on human drivers, with fully driverless concepts like the Cybercab remaining unrefined. Uber’s Multi-Partner Autonomy Play Getty All of this helps us get a better idea of Uber’s future strategy. Instead of putting all its eggs into one basket, the company is building a diverse ecosystem of partners and platforms from Volkswagen to perhaps Nissan, and now Rivian. If Rivian can deliver on its promises, the R2 robotaxi may end up becoming a cornerstone of Uber’s long-term vision and serve as a real-world example of what autonomous cars should be. We Now Have Gesture-Controlled Car Doors — Whether We Needed Them or Not
The level of technological sophistication Chinese vehicles have reached in recent years must have been impossible to anticipate two decades ago, when domestic automakers started making their initial inroads into overseas markets. At the time, ICE vehicles from Chinese brands lagged way behind those manufactured by established automakers from North America, Europe, Japan and South Korea. But the advent of the electric vehicle into the mainstream in the mid 2010s has provided a level playing field between Chinese automakers and their western counterparts, and from then onward, their development accelerated at warp speed in unprecedented fashion for the automobile industry. Today, China is the world’s No. 1 player in EV manufacturing and EV battery manufacturing, and its market is by far the world’s biggest for electric cars. It also controls the majority of global refining capacity for critical EV minerals and dominates the battery supply chain. Chinese automakers produce some of the world’s most high-tech vehicles, and Chinese customers’ fascination with technology is driving a constant barrage of new car tech. But technology for technology’s sake is not always a good idea, as many of you know, especially if you’ve driven a car that has essential vehicle functions hidden in a touchscreen menu or whose pop-out door handles freeze in winter. The Smart Car Version of 'Open Sesame'A car in China can open its doors without touching, but it seems like people aren't ready for that yet 🚗 pic.twitter.com/E8M2akz8qE — Tansu Yegen (@TansuYegen) March 18, 2026 With every new generation, Chinese smart cars are pushing the boundaries of in-car technology, even in areas one would never think necessary, such as the mundane act of opening a car door. For more than a century, people have opened doors by pulling handles, and everything worked out just fine. In recent years, however, the trend of flush-mounted, pop-out door handles has taken over the industry—especially EVs—bringing benefits in aerodynamics and styling. They have also brought safety concerns that we won't go over again; suffice to say China has banned electric pop-out door handles starting January 1, 2027. AITO Meanwhile, there are several car models in China that have transformed the straightforward process of opening a door into a gimmick. Take the Aito M8, for example, a full-size electric luxury SUV whose doors can be unlocked and opened with gestures, without touching anything. A video shared by user @TansuYegen on X.com demonstrates how the technology works, or rather how it doesn’t work if your gestures aren’t interpreted correctly by the system. The short clip shows a sales consultant demonstrating the feature to showroom visitors, who are having a hard time pulling the stunt. It may be fun to experience in a showroom, but what happens in an emergency? Thankfully, the vehicle can be opened the old-fashioned way by pulling the handles; and if the 12-volt battery dies, the physical key opens the driver's door and internal door handles allow passengers to exit. How Does It Work? AITO The Aito M8 has cameras positioned between the front and rear doors that use facial recognition and Huawei’s AI algorithms to track hand movements, allowing users to open or close the doors with a simple gesture, without touching the door handle. Hand gestures can also be used as confirmation commands, enabling the vehicle to reverse automatically into a tight parking space after the driver exits; the same gesture summons the car to drive itself out of a parking spot. AITO AITO, which stands for Adding Intelligence to Auto, is a luxury new energy vehicle (NEV) brand launched in 2021 as a partnership between Huawei and Seres. The Aito M8's triple-screen infotainment setup runs the tech giant’s HarmonyOS, which is the same operating system incorporated in Huawei smartphones, tablets and wearables, enabling them to seamlessly connect to the vehicle. The M8 also features Huawei’s Qiankun ADS 4.0 advanced Level 3 autonomous driving system. The Aito M8 offers both BEV and EREV powertrains, as well as five- or six-seat interior layouts. Prices start around $50,000 in China, where the M8 got 80,000 orders in its first month on the market. AITO View the full article

Toyota’s Small Car Division Builds an Ultra-Limited Turbo Kei Car
Tuned with a Warranty D-Sport Racing, the performance arm of Daihatsu, has a complete car for sale, undriven, brand-new, and ready for customers with a warranty. It’s based on a Daihatsu Mira e:S, a Kei car that makes about 48 horsepower, and comes equipped with a 658 cc inline three-cylinder gasoline engine. Thanks to the tuners at D-Sport, the limited Mira e:S is available for sale with a turbocharger and a five-speed manual gearbox, but there is a catch – more on that later. Daihatsu is Toyota’s small car division and a supplier of affordable platforms that are ready to be rebadged as Toyotas and shipped to emerging markets. Rebadged Daihatsus are usually found across Southeast Asia, particularly in the Philippines and Cambodia. Daihatsu Kei Car BasicsJapanese Kei cars are limited to a total displacement of 660 cc and a set of parameters and dimensions regulated by the Japanese government. These cars get special yellow plates and are granted certain tax exemptions or reductions. Ever since, Kei cars have been daily drivers for many Japanese motorists, whether they opt for a small truck, a van, or – of course – a hatchback. To make the most of the displacement available in Kei cars, turbochargers can be fitted to boost power and improve capability, but models like the Mira e:S use naturally aspirated mills. Mitsubishi Daihatsu Specialist D-Sport Racing lives and breathes Daihatsu Kei cars, enough to participate in rally championships and supported by Daihatsu itself. The company has efforts in grassroots motorsports and rally. Since Daihatsu is owned by Toyota, D-Sport racing also benefits from some stuff from Gazoo Racing. They’ve developed a total of four modern Daihatsu race cars at this time, which include the Daihatsu Rocky, Copen GR Sport, and another Copen GR Sport that will serve as the brand’s World Rally Championship (WRC) Japan entry, and finally the Daihatsu Mira e:S. D-Sport Racing The (Kei) CarIn base form, the Mira e:S is an affordable city Kei car aimed at drivers who want an economical way to get around. It’s a naturally aspirated three-cylinder with 658cc displacement, and it comes mated to either a CVT or a five-speed manual transmission. The interior is basic, the car is light, and it’s rather plain-looking, all things considered. On a more interesting note, “e:S” stands for “energy Saving,” which means it has start-stop functions, improved aerodynamics, and reduced weight. The complete car – received, modified, and delivered by D-Sport Racing – uses a special 5MT Turbo variant of the Mira e:S. Exclusive to this variant of the Kei car are an intercooler-turbo engine with the designation KF-VET, a dedicated ECU, a five-speed manual transmission, a floor console, a chrome-plated shift knob, a six-point roll cage with side bars, a front super limited-slip differential, brake calipers, front ventilated discs, 14-inch center caps on black steel wheels, a D-Sport Racing emblem, and a special serial number sticker. The turbocharger boosts engine performance from 48 horsepower to 63 horsepower, and turbocharged torque is at 67.8 lb-ft. Knock your socks off, it won't, but when you factor in the weight of the car, which comes in at just 1,565 pounds (710 kilograms), that output increase will be quite sizeable. D-Sport Racing Price and FreebiesSo if you want to buy this car in Japan, prepare around 3,057,549 Japanese Yen (¥3,057,549) after taxes, to be exact. What you get for that money is the Daihatsu Mira e:S tuned by D-Sport Racing, which is based on registered, unused vehicle, all the special parts and tuning, plus, a general warranty period of three years or 37,000 miles (60,000 kilometers) for the base vehicle and a one-year or 12,400 miles (20,000 kilometers) warranty on all the modified parts. In dollars, that translates to around $19,300, which is quite a pretty penny for a pretty little hatchback. The catch is that by buying this car, you’re also agreeing not to sell it within one year after delivery. On top of that, there is a lottery system for the sale of this vehicle. By entering, you will only get the chance to win the opportunity to purchase this vehicle. Though the bigger question is, would you pay this much for a souped-up 660cc pocket rocket? I know some people might. D-Sport View the full article

Leaked Images Reveal Brabus’ Wild Bodo V12 Coupe With Aston Martin Roots
A New Flagship Coupe with Old-School AttitudeBrabus has never been subtle, and its latest teaser proves the German tuner is not about to start now. A shadowy social media preview introduced the world to the upcoming Brabus Bodo V12, a front-engined coupe that looks poised to sit at the very top of the brand’s portfolio. The reveal was intentionally vague, but two details stood out immediately: a sleek grand touring silhouette and a prominent ’77’ insignia, referencing the year Brabus was founded in Bottrop, Germany. Named after founder Bodo Buschmann, the Bodo V12 feels like a deliberate throwback to an era when excess was the point. Early indications suggest a long-hood, short-deck proportion with a dramatic stance, echoing some of the most iconic grand tourers of the past. If Brabus follows its own legacy, this won’t just be about styling theatrics, but outright performance, now widely expected to be anchored by a V12 platform derived from the Aston Martin Vanquish. Vanquish Roots and Maybach-Inspired DramaA report from TheSupercar Blog has already pulled the curtain back further, thanks to leaked images that give us a much clearer look at the Brabus Bodo V12. At first glance, the coupe appears larger and more elongated than a typical SL-based build, leading to speculation that it may instead share its underpinnings with the Aston Martin Vanquish. The windscreen rake, window line, and even the side mirrors all closely resemble the V12-powered Vanquish, strengthening that theory. Visually, the Bodo leans heavily into dramatic design cues. There is a pronounced shark-nose front end paired with an impossibly long hood, while the rear fenders are aggressively flared to give the car a planted, almost menacing stance. Around the back, quad LED taillights flank a central Brabus script, sitting above a stacked quad-exhaust setup that leaves no doubt about the car’s intentions. There are also hints of inspiration from the Vision Maybach 6, particularly in its proportions and sweeping roofline, blending luxury elegance with tuner aggression. The Supercar Blog A V12 Statement in an Electrified WorldBrabus has built its reputation on turning already fast cars into borderline absurd machines, and the Bodo V12 looks like a culmination of that philosophy. From the legendary 7.3S to countless AMG-based monsters, the brand has always thrived in the space where engineering meets excess. In an industry rapidly pivoting toward electrification and efficiency, cars like the Bodo V12 serve a different purpose. They are emotional anchors, reminders that performance is not just about numbers, but about character, sound, and presence. Fuel prices may fluctuate, and regulations may tighten, but there will always be a place, however niche, for machines that exist purely to push boundaries, and few do that better than Brabus with a V12 under the hood. Rolls-Royce Cullinan Recall Means Owners Might Want to Ride Shotgun For Now
Not All Recalls Are Created EqualRecalls in the auto industry tend to fall into two broad categories. Some trace back to suppliers, where a faulty part finds its way into thousands of vehicles across multiple brands. Others originate much closer to home, often tied to how a vehicle was assembled at the factory. The latest Rolls-Royce recall falls into the assembly category. Recalls are rare for the British marque, given its low production volumes and high quality-control standards, so even a minor issue tends to get noticed. This recall comes down to an assembly oversight, not a supplier problem. The number of vehicles is small, but the safety implications are sufficient for Rolls-Royce to issue a formal voluntary recall and notify owners immediately. Rolls-Royce The Affected CullinansThe recall includes 2020-2026 Rolls-Royce Cullinan SUVs, with production dates ranging from November 27, 2019, to November 19, 2025. So, yes, that covers both Cullinan Series I and Series II. In total, 102 vehicles are potentially affected. According to the safety recall report, the main issue is the fixing bolts related to the rear seating area. These bolts secure either the left- and right-rear seat safety belts or the rear bench seat backrest locking brackets. In some cases, one of these bolts may not have been tightened to the correct specification during assembly. Needless to say, a loose bolt can become a bigger problem over time. In a crash, the rear seat belts might not hold passengers securely, or the backrest could shift forward if there’s cargo in the back. Either way, there’s a risk of injury, particularly with the vehicle owner who will likely sit in the back. Engineers first noticed the issue on January 23, 2026, during a routine quality check. A rattling noise led them to a loose bolt near the rear seat. After finding another vehicle with the same problem, Rolls-Royce started a deeper investigation and decided to issue a voluntary recall. A Relatively Simple FixThe fix is relatively simple. Dealers will check the bolts, tighten or replace them as needed, and inspect the rear seat belts for any issues. If anything needs to be replaced, it will be done at no cost to the owner. Until the inspection is done, Rolls-Royce recommends not using the rear seats or carrying cargo in the back. It’s a safety precaution, not based on the number of vehicles involved. So far, there have been no reported accidents or injuries linked to this issue. For a brand built on craftsmanship and attention to detail, this recall highlights how even minor assembly issues can occur. The response here, at least, has been focused and contained. Adrian Newey Steps Down as Aston Martin Team Principal as Audi Left in Limbo
From Dark Horse to Lame DuckAston Martin's return to Formula 1 racing as a full team has been tumultuous at best. Having had ups and (many) downs, the team needed an x-factor to get them to where they wanted to be. After all, Team Owner and multi-billionaire Lawrence Stroll has already poured substantial funds into the team. One big investment has come in terms of personnel. In 2024, they were able to lure F1 car design wizard Adrian Newey away from Red Bull. With a keen eye on this season's new regulation changes, they were touted as possible dark horses for 2026, but have instead stumbled out of the gate. Drastic measures are being taken to revive the team's performance, and some key people are moving around. Getty Newey Out as Team PrincipalThis year's season has been disastrous for Aston Martin so far; its Honda powertrains have proven unreliable and, thus far, very slow. It's come to a point where the extreme vibrations emitted by the engine are forcing drivers Alonso and Stroll to retire to avoid permanent nerve damage. For the past few months, Newey has been the head of the team's design and technical department, and also wore the Team Principal hat. A report by Motorsport.com has revealed that he will be relinquishing that role to focus on further improving the car. In another shocking development, his replacement will reportedly be an old Red Bull colleague, also responsible for many championships, Jonathan Wheatley. This comes as a shock considering Wheatley only recently became team boss of the Audi team. With a current contract enforced at Audi, it will take some time to get Wheatley onboard at Aston, but Newey's stepping down indicates the change could happen sooner rather than later. Audi F1 What's Next?Shockwaves have been sent throughout the F1 paddock with this move, but it shows that Aston is in dire need of help, and that something could also be up at Audi with Wheatley leaving so soon. If the report is true, it's possible Newey personally endorsed and pursued Wheatley, considering both worked together at Red Bull and oversaw that team's rise to F1 dominance. For Audi, though, this leaves the new team exposed on the leadership front. However, waiting in the wings and already a boss at Audi F1 is former Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto, who in the interim could fill in for Wheatley as the team searches for a new replacement. Dodge, Jeep, Ram EVs Finally Gain Tesla Supercharger Access
Stellantis has announced that its electric vehicles in North America now have access to the Tesla Supercharging network. Spanning 27,500 locations, compatibility with the Supercharging network significantly improves access to charging for EV owners. The move benefits owners of electric vehicles from Dodge, Jeep, Ram, Fiat, and Maserati, all of which fall under the Stellantis umbrella. For models without a NACS charging port, a new adapter is available from certified dealerships or Mopar. What Stellantis Vehicles Can Use Tesla Superchargers? Kristen Brown Stellantis may have discontinued several plug-in hybrids recently, but the company has steadily grown its EV lineup. The following models can now enjoy Supercharger access: 2024-2026 Dodge Charger Daytona2024-2025 Jeep Wagoneer S2026 Jeep Recon2024-2026 Ram ProMaster EV2024-2026 Fiat 500e2024-206 Maserati GranTurismo Folgore2024-206 Maserati GranCabrio Folgore2025-2026 Maserati Grecale FolgoreThe 2027 Dodge Charger Daytona became the first Stellantis model to launch with the NACS charging port that allows Supercharger access without an adapter. For other models, the Free2move Charge NACS-CCS1 DC adapter is available from the Mopar parts store for $250. Owners can use the Free2move Charge app to locate Tesla V3 and the even quicker V4 Superchargers. The newer V4 Superchargers have the capability of charging at speeds of up to 325 kW in the U.S., significantly above the 250 kW maximum of V3 chargers. These chargers also have the infrastructure to support speeds of up to 500 kW, but EVs in the U.S. are not yet able to charge at these speeds. The same Free2move Charge app can be used to find other publicly available AC and DC fast-charging stations. Why It Matters Stellantis With many consumers gravitating towards hybrids, automakers in the U.S. have their work cut out to make EVs as appealing as possible. Big discounts have been common in recent months, but another important part of getting people to take the EV plunge is easing access to public chargers. Stellantis has now aligned with Ford, General Motors, Toyota, BMW, and others in having access to the Tesla Supercharger network, the most extensive charging network in the country and often considered one of the most reliable. For now, the adapter makes Supercharger access possible, but this is likely an interim solution as we expect more Stellantis EVs to eventually ship with the standard NACS charging port. Ford Maverick Was Supposed to be Cheap—So Why Are Buyers Paying $35K Over 7 Years?
Loans Longer Than Presidential TermsThe Ford Maverick was meant to reset expectations. A compact pickup with a sub-$30,000 starting price, hybrid efficiency, and just enough capability to lure buyers out of sedans and crossovers. It was positioned as the antidote to bloated truck pricing. But in today’s market, even the Maverick is starting to reflect a different reality – one where “affordable” is more marketing than math. New car prices have now pushed beyond the $50,000 mark on average, and that pressure is trickling down. Even entry-level vehicles like the Maverick are being pulled upward, not just by higher transaction prices but also by how they are financed. The result is a truck that still looks inexpensive on paper, yet ends up costing far more over time. Cole Attisha The Maverick Math Doesn’t Add UpTake the 2025 Ford Maverick XL. Its MSRP is $28,145, but the estimated transaction price is $29,840. From there, the typical deal structure tells a different story: a $2,984 down payment and roughly $26,856 financed at 5.9% over 84 months. That lands you at a seemingly reasonable $390 per month. On the surface, that is exactly what made the Maverick so appealing in the first place. But stretch that across seven years, and the total paid in monthly installments alone reaches around $32,760. Factor in the down payment, and you are looking at roughly $35,744 out of pocket. That is nearly $6,000 in interest on what is marketed as a budget-friendly pickup. The Maverick is still cheaper than most trucks, but the gap narrows significantly once financing is accounted for. Cole Attisha View the 1 images of this gallery on the original article The Lowdown on 84-Month LoansThe biggest pitfall of an 84-month loan is negative equity. Vehicles depreciate fastest in the first three years, yet borrowers are barely chipping away at principal during that same window. If you need to sell or trade in early, you are likely underwater. Add rising interest rates, and the total cost balloons quickly, turning a budget-friendly compact pickup into a significantly more expensive proposition over time. There is a narrow upside. If you are the type to keep a vehicle well past the loan term, an extended loan can reduce monthly strain and improve cash flow. But that requires discipline and long-term ownership. For many buyers, leasing a Maverick may actually be the smarter financial play, offering lower monthly payments and avoiding the burden of long-term depreciation. In a market where prices keep climbing, stretching loans may solve the short-term problem, but they create a much bigger one down the road. Ford View the full article

Tesla Cybertruck Finally Gets Feature That Stops Doors Opening Into Traffic
Technology for SafetyIf there's one thing that motorists these days prioritize, it's safety. With more drivers on the road, the risk of any mishaps or accidents increases. Automakers are taking advantage of this safety push by pouring a lot of R&D into developing multiple new-age features. Tesla prides itself on being a forward-thinking disruptor, and ever since, safety has been top of mind for them. Pioneers in many technologies, like autonomous driving, one of the newer, often-overlooked features is being added to a new model. Cybertruck Door SafetySay what you want about the Tesla Cybertruck, but one thing everyone can agree on is that it's huge, and its design has unique ergonomics in terms of door usage and the possibility of impaired vision for passengers. Thankfully, a new and very welcome safety feature is making its way to the Cybertruck. Tesla announced on an X post that a new anti-dooring feature is being added to the Cybertruck; this feature will now come standard with every new model Tesla sells. Basically, anti-dooring uses the car's cameras to detect oncoming vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians. If a hazard is detected, the system engages the blindspot blinkers and an audible chime sounds. Lastly, it'll also stop the door from opening; passengers would need to press the button again after the hazard has passed. The feature, also known as Blind Spot Warning While Parked, will be rolled out via a software update (2026.8) that uses the car's existing hardware, eliminating the need to install new components. It's said that this feature has already been suggested by previous owners as early as 2018. Tesla Dooring IncidentsWhile it may seem like a small feature, dooring is much more common an issue than people think. Also, legally, the person who opened the door and caused the incident is usually at fault. Most dooring incidents are labeled as drivers or passengers being negligent in their surroundings. Furthermore, certain U.S. states actually have numbers backing up dooring accidents. In Chicago, dooring accounts for 19.7% of all bycicle accidents, Santa Barbara California says their number is at 16%, and in Boston 5% can be attributed to what they call "door zone" accidents. Ferrari Boss Explains Why Touchscreens Took Over Cars—and Why Buttons Are Coming Back
Customers have complained that touch controls are not as engaging or as easy to use as real buttons, and Ferrari has been doing something about it. New cars are getting physical buttons on the steering wheels again, and even slightly older models can be retrofitted with more tactile controls, too. It's not the only automaker addressing the issue, either. At the other end of the price scale, Volkswagen is bringing real buttons back, but why are touch controls so proliferative in the first place? The simple answer, as you might have guessed, is money; it's much easier to program a blank display than to design, develop, and manufacture a real piece of switchgear for a dedicated function. Ferrari CEO Provides Honest Explanation for Touch Control Popularity Ferrari Speaking in an interview with Autocar India, Ferrari CEO Benedetto Vigna explained that touch keys carry manufacturing costs some 50 percent lower than traditional buttons: "The touch is something that is made for the supplier's advantage." He added that reverting to physical controls in a world where haptic controls and touch interfaces dominate the automotive market helps Ferrari stand out as special. Some may remember how many critics harshly judged the Lamborghini Gallardo for having the same sort of gauge cluster and driver info display as an Audi A4, arguing that while such part sharing may have saved the brand from financial turmoil, it gave the supercar an air of relative cheapness. Similarly, today's cars are invariably dominated by touchscreens and touch controls because suppliers save money by not developing unique individual components, and Ferrari wants its products to feel distinctly exceptional. Hence, the upcoming Luce EV intentionally avoids touch controls wherever possible. Physical Controls Need to Become Cost-Effective, and There May Be a Solution Ferrari/YouTube When touch-based controls were a novelty, they stood out, but once everyone adopted them, they no longer did. Furthermore, several studies have shown that, while touch controls are brilliant for smartphones that need to perform myriad functions with a single interface, from taking pictures to organizing meetings and playing games, a car that relies on such devices for basic controls only encourages distraction. It's neither safe nor legal to look down at your phone while driving, yet automakers have been feeding us interiors that require just that to find the menu for adjusting climate controls or even just adjusting the volume. Unfortunately, in an increasingly competitive market, everyday cars need to shave costs wherever possible, and designing brand-specific graphics for the same screens and buttons is easy, while cars that cost six, seven, or eight figures, like the Bugatti Tourbillon, can indulge in the extravagance of custom-made tactile controls. Hopefully, mainstream automakers and their suppliers will consider solutions like additive manufacturing to find a happy medium. BMW, whose new i3 sedan has very few physical touchpoints, is among those using 3D printing to create car parts, and we'd like to believe it will apply that expertise to produce better user interfaces in the future. Long Live the V12: Rolls-Royce Delays EV-Only Plans as V12 Demand Holds Strong
The EV PushbackJust a few years ago, almost every automaker set a deadline to make their respective lineups EV-only. That's mainly thanks to the EU's supposed ban on fuel-fed vehicles by 2035, although that rule is not entirely set in stone. It's an ambitious target, but right now it doesn't seem all that realistic, and consumers aren't migrating en masse to pure battery power. More recently, automakers have either been delaying the move to go pure electric or cancelling plans altogether. The most recent is Rolls-Royce, scrapping its EV-only-by-2030 target, according to British news outlet The Times. Not only that, but the company has also committed to continue building V12s for as long as it can. Rolls-Royce The Wealthy Aren't Buying Enough Posh EVsPerhaps it's the brand's demographics, but customers simply aren't forming orderly queues for the Spectre. The ultra-luxury coupe was introduced in 2023 for the 2024 model year, and initial sales were, indeed, strong. But as demand for EVs has cooled down, so have orders for Rolls-Royce's lone electric offering. Instead, it's the V12-powered Cullinan that's been keeping the brand very busy. It remains the British marque's top-selling model by quite some margin, and it's showing no signs of slowing down. That said, the Spectre is Rolls-Royce's second best-selling model, but its sales actually plummeted by a whopping 47% in 2025. It barely edged out the Ghost, which also has a mighty 12-cylinder under its bonnet. Rolls-Royce Not Just Rolls-RoyceRolls isn't the only ultra-prestige automaker that's adjusting its EV strategy. For instance, Lamborghini has axed further development of its EV crossover, while Aston Martin is delaying the rollout of its electric vehicles. While Bentley is still pushing ahead with its battery-powered crossover, it has also shelved several EV projects. "For every client that loves an electric vehicle, there is one who does not," said Rolls-Royce CEO, Chris Brownridge. Meanwhile, Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann mentioned that demand for an EV from Sant'Agata Bolognese is "close to zero," and went as far as saying that "it’s the wrong time for a full EV." The V12 Lives, But for How Long? So, 12-cylinders remain in Rolls-Royce's future. While it sounds like good news, there's a bigger challenge ahead of it. The EU isn't backing down from tightening its emissions regulations, and V12s aren't exactly the cleanest engines around. It's these same regs that have forced many to opt for downsized turbo engines or plug-in hybrid power as a way to work around them. Still, Rolls-Royce's parent, BMW, says it will continuously update the 6.6-liter engine to keep it compliant. But unless an exception is made for low-volume and specialty manufacturers, we fear that these massive engines are living on borrowed time. Rolls-Royce View the full article

Driving Behind a Jeep Wagoneer S Might Not Be a Good Idea Right Now
The Jeep Wagoneer S, the brand’s first all-electric vehicle for the U.S. market, is already being recalled a little over a year after the start of deliveries. FCA US has notified the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that it is recalling 11,767 Jeep Wagoneer S SUVs because a liftgate hinge cover may detach, turning into a road hazard for other vehicles and increasing the risk of a crash. Loose Plastic Trim Can Become a Dangerous Road Hazard on the Road Stellantis More specifically, the liftgate hinge covers were built with “insufficient design tolerances” and may not be properly clipped into position on affected vehicles, potentially causing them to detach while the vehicle is in motion. While a loose piece of plastic trim may not sound like such a big deal, it can become a dangerous road hazard at highway speeds for other drivers, potentially causing their vehicles to crash without prior warning. The recall covers certain 2024 through 2026 Wagoneer S models built from March 21, 2024—when production of the premium electric mid-size SUV began in Toluca, Mexico—to July 24, 2025. On vehicles produced after that date, Jeep says the rear hinge covers are not prone to detaching. The automaker estimates that 6.7% of the vehicles included in the recall have the defect. The percentage was determined by supplier and vehicle production records; the part supplier is Magna International. To fix the issue, dealers will inspect, repair or replace the hinge cover as necessary, free of charge. If You Don't See Them, You'll Hear Them Jeep So how can owners know if their Wagoneer S actually has the faulty rear hinge covers? Besides a visual inspection that may reveal if one or both covers are loose or not fully seated, the automaker notes that a rattling noise might be heard by the driver and passengers coming from the rear of the vehicle while driving. That is a warning that the hinge covers may detach soon. FCA US said it is not aware of any accidents or injuries potentially related to this issue. The recall campaign is estimated to debut in the second quarter of 2026, with owner notification letters expected to be mailed on or around May 1. If you don’t want to wait until then, you can also check out if your Wagoneer S is part of the recall via the NHTSA VIN lookup tool starting March 19, 2026. The Jeep Wagoneer S features a dual-motor AWD powertrain offering a combined 500 hp and 524 lb-ft of torque in base Limited trim or 600 hp and 617 lb-ft of torque in Launch Edition guise. The 0-60 mph sprint takes just under 4 seconds for the former and around 3.4 seconds for the latter. Both models feature a 100-kWh battery pack enabling an EPA-rated range of over 294 miles in the Wagoneer S Limited and 300 miles in the Launch Edition. View the full article

2026 Lexus ES Launches With LS-Level Rear-Seat Luxury
Lexus has officially launched the eighth generation of the ES sedan in the United States. Available in both fully electric and hybrid iterations, the ES 350e EV will be arriving in dealerships in April at a starting price of $47,500, which is actually cheaper than the hybrid variants. The EV will be followed by the hybrid version in June, giving Lexus buyers in this category an interesting choice to make, given the price parity between the two powertrains. We’ve covered the 2026 ES sedan before, so we’ll focus only on key specifications and take a look at the options available in the new configurator—one of which sounds like something you'd expect in an S-Class. 2026 Lexus ES Key Specifications Lexus The 350e and 500e are the two electric versions of the new Lexus ES. The 350e is a front-wheel-drive model with 221 horsepower and up to 307 miles of range, while the 500e is a dual-motor all-wheel-drive model with 338 hp and a range of 276 miles. The 350h hybrid pairs a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with an electric motor to produce 244 hp combined; the output stays the same whether or not it has AWD. The FWD EV and both hybrids all have a 0-60 time of between 7 and 7.5 seconds, while the 500e is the performer of the lineup, with a 5.1-second 0-60 time. All models come with a 12.3-inch digital driver’s display and the new Lexus Interface infotainment system with a 14-inch touchscreen. The Lexus Safety System+ 4.0 is the company’s latest driver-assistance suite and is also found across the lineup. Related: Lexus Reveals Stunning All-New 2026 ES In Two Electrified Flavors Lexus ES Optional Extras Lexus The Lexus ES fully electric trims are now available to configure on the automaker’s website. On the base 350e Premium, there are six color options: Wavelength, Iridium, Ultra White, Cooper Crest, Caviar, and Cloudburst Gray. Only Caviar is standard, with the others going for between $500 and $595. Standard black NuLuxe upholstery with Checkered trim can be upgraded to white or Palomino at no extra charge. This trim’s main upgrade is the $1,220 Convenience Package with a driver monitor, intuitive parking assist with auto braking, and front cross-traffic alert. At $375, a Cold Area Package adds a radiant knee heater, a windshield wiper de-icer, and headlamp washers. The ES 350e Luxury gains semi-aniline leather and Bamboo Layering trim. It’s uniquely available with the $3,635 Executive Package, which includes: Rear passenger center armrest with climate controlsSoft Type rear headrestHeated and ventilated rear outboard seatsRear seat massagePower trunk with kick sensorPower-reclining rear seats 2026 Lexus ES with Executive Package Lexus View the 2 images of this gallery on the original article This package is rare in the midsize sedan segment and adds a touch of Lexus LS-type luxury at a much more reasonable price point. With this option, the 350e Luxury costs just over $60k including destination, roughly as much as you’ll pay for a base BMW 5 Series with no options. The package may have been added in light of the fact that Lexus will be discontinuing the larger LS sedan. Oddly, this upgrade isn’t available on the more powerful Lexus ES 500e. Final Thoughts Lexus Lexus has taken a leaf out of BMW’s book with the new ES. Whether you choose hybrid or electric propulsion, the car looks and feels much the same. The BMW 5 Series and i5 follow the same recipe. Where the Lexus differs from its German rivals is in how it prioritizes luxury at a lower price point. For the executive who will sometimes be chauffeured, it’s a much more affordable option than an S-Class or 7 Series, or even a well-specced E-Class. The Lexus isn’t as powerful as these rivals, but this is a luxury car first and foremost, not a sports sedan. We look forward to getting behind the wheel of the new ES soon. View the full article

Volkswagen’s 2027 Atlas Gets a High-Tech Interior With a Hidden Screen
What a Tease Volkswagen is – once again – teasing a photo of its 2027 Atlas. Set to debut at the 2026 New York International Auto Show (NYIAS) in early April, more details of the new three-row SUV from VW have been sent to our inboxes. The previous 2027 Atlas teaser revealed a close-up of the LED taillights, and VW seems to be pretty fond of its LED setup with the Atlas for the North American market. We even got to see the prototype of the three-row SUV. Volkswagen of America VW Really Likes Its Light Design Now, we’re seeing another set of lights, but this time in the interior. The highlight of this teaser is the dashboard and door card interior ambient lighting. The brand also states that the “2027 Volkswagen Atlas is more premium and more modern, yet unmistakably Atlas.” I’m not sure about “unmistakable,” but it seems like the new Atlas is going to be a nice place to be in at night. So, yet another “light show” from Volkswagen, and there will probably be more teasers incoming. What’s next, the headlights? If you look at the photo closely, however, you might notice that the dashboard's ambient light looks like a screen – and that’s because it is. Volkswagen China More About the New Atlas While Volkswagen North America can tease this all it wants, we already have a good idea of what the new three-row SUV will bring to the table, thanks to the Volkswagen Teramont Pro. A member of the global lineup of Volkswagen and on sale in China, the Teramont is a model premiered by SAIC-Volkswagen, and it has been making the rounds for about a year now. Historically, the now-outgoing Atlas was also based on this model, so it makes sense that the two models will remain related. Even down to the interior, the Teramont shares an uncanny resemblance to the Atlas teaser photo. Perhaps Volkswagen meant “Unmistakably [Teramont] Atlas,” in its press release? With the Teramont serving as the base, we can expect the Atlas to be quite impressive. In China, the model features three displays in the dash, 30-color ambient lighting, a panoramic sunroof, a Harman Kardon sound system, a fragrance diffuser, and a front passenger seat with an electric footrest, as well as massage and ventilation functions. Now, we’re at least certain that Volkswagen will offer the third display as an option or top-spec feature, along with the ambient lights, but we can’t say for sure whether the other features we just mentioned will be included. Our eyes aren’t that good, and VW just sent out one photo. Apart from that, we were able to secure a bunch of spy shots of the new Atlas. The front-end grows more imposing while the rear taillights also get a big boost in presence, and the exterior follows the design direction of other updated VW models like the Tiguan and the Golf. Volkswagen China Under the Hood The Teramont is built on the MQB Evo platform. We’re fairly certain that the powertrain will consist of a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder from the fifth-generation EA888 family of engines. The gasoline motor will be paired to an 8-speed automatic transmission, and variants with all-wheel drive come with VW’s 4Matic system. Power figures are unconfirmed, but the 2.0-liter sits at 268 hp, and torque may go as high as 295 lb-ft, depending on whether VW wants to try and best the outgoing model’s towing capacity of up to 5,000 lbs. Anyway, we expect a few more teasers and details to be revealed at NYIAS, closer to the show, which starts on April 3, 2026, and runs until April 12, 2026. Toyota Built the Affordable EV America Wants—So Why Isn’t It Coming Here?
What Is It?Affordable EVs are still hard to come by in the US. Even as more models show up, the starting price isn’t what most buyers would call accessible. The Chevrolet Bolt and Nissan Leaf still lead the way for value, while Toyota’s C-HR EV sits much higher, closer to the high-$30,000 mark. That leaves a clear gap for something more attainable. Toyota fills that gap differently outside the US. The Urban Cruiser, built in India with Suzuki and sold in Europe and Asia, is their answer. It’s more global than it first appears, even if it feels tailored for specific markets. On paper, it looks like the missing piece in Toyota’s US EV lineup: compact, affordable, and shaped like the crossovers Americans already know. But after a closer look, it’s clear this isn’t the no-frills, high-value EV many buyers are waiting for. Jacob Oliva/Autoblog The SpecsThe Urban Cruiser lands squarely in subcompact crossover territory, noticeably smaller than the Toyota C-HR. At 168.7 inches long, 70.9 inches wide, and 64.4 inches tall, the Toyota is nearly identical in footprint to the second-generation Bolt, which measures about 169.6 inches in length, 69.7 inches in width, and 63.9 inches in height. Wheelbase is also close: 106.3 inches for the Urban Cruiser versus 105.3 inches for the Bolt. With 7.1 inches of ground clearance, the Urban Cruiser can handle city streets and the odd rough patch, but it’s not built for anything more demanding. It seats five, but the focus is on practical use of space rather than stretching out. A front-mounted electric motor drives the front wheels, putting out 174 horsepower and 142 lb-ft of torque. That’s about average for entry-level EV crossovers. It won’t win any drag races, but it should handle daily commutes without fuss. The 61 kWh LFP battery claims a 295-mile range, which looks strong on paper and stacks up well against established US EVs. But keep in mind, that number is optimistic compared to what the EPA would rate it. Jacob Oliva/Autoblog Inside, Toyota packed the Urban Cruiser with features. There’s a 10.1-inch infotainment screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus a 10.25-inch digital cluster. You also get a 9-speaker JBL system, panoramic moonroof, wireless charging, and heated front seats. The rear seats are more flexible than most in this class. They slide and split 40/20/40, so you can choose between more room for passengers or extra cargo. It’s a smart detail you don’t often see at this price. As expected, there is tons of safety equipment. You get Toyota’s full suite of driver-assistance features, including adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and a pre-collision system. A panoramic view monitor and front- and rear-parking sensors round things out. Jacob Oliva/Autoblog What’s It Like?Unfortunately, I didn’t get the chance to drive the Urban Cruiser yet, but spending time with it in person makes its priorities clear. The design holds up in the metal. The hammerhead front end is pure Toyota, and the sloping roofline adds some character. It avoids the generic EV look, which is a win in this segment. Inside, the layout is simple and user-friendly. Physical controls for climate and volume are still there, which makes a difference. The screens are crisp, though a bit laggy, and the cabin feels modern without trying too hard. Jacob Oliva/Autoblog Material quality is mixed, with some nice textures and a two-tone scheme to brighten things up, but there’s still a lot of hard plastic underneath. It doesn’t feel bargain-basement, but it doesn’t fully justify the price either. Front seat space is fine, but the back is where compromises show. Headroom is tighter than you’d expect (I stand at 5’6”), and fitting three adults across is a stretch. No rear air vents, which is a miss for hotter climates. Still, the flexible rear seats are a real plus. Sliding and splitting them in different ways makes the most of the space, especially if you’re often switching between hauling people and cargo. Just don’t expect a huge trunk with all seats up because it’s very limited. Jacob Oliva/Autoblog VerdictIn the Philippines, where the Urban Cruiser was recently launched, it has a price tag of P2.1 million, or roughly $35,000 in today's exchange rates. That puts it up against established US EVs – some of which offer more power, polish, or even size. And that’s where the problem lies. The Urban Cruiser checks a lot of boxes: good features, practical size, and the Toyota badge. But on closer inspection, it doesn’t quite pull ahead where it counts. Overall, it falls short of the value and finish that American buyers expect at this price. The interior is a mixed bag, the packaging has compromises, and there are better choices out there – like the Nissan Leaf – that feel more complete at a lower price point. For global markets, the Urban Cruiser works as an entry-level EV. In the US, where buyers have more choices and higher expectations, it’s a tougher sell. There’s potential here, but right now, it’s not quite ready for American roads. Jacob Oliva/Autoblog View the 9 images of this gallery on the original article View the full article
