Diesel Thunder and Jet Fire: Truckin’ For Kids Delivers Power and Purpose at Famoso
If there’s a place where horsepower meets heart, it’s the annual Truckin’ For Kids Charity Show & Drags – and the 45th edition didn’t lift. It stood on the diesel pedal and never looked back. Held May 2-3 at Famoso Dragstrip and presented by 10-4 Magazine, the Bakersfield staple once again proved that big rigs, big smoke, and big speed can drive an even bigger purpose. With all net proceeds benefiting Shriners Children’s Hospital in Pasadena, the weekend blended show-and-shine polish with full-throttle action down the quarter-mile. Sunday’s dragstrip program brought the noise. Diesel trucks stormed the historic Famoso surface, laying down thick clouds of smoke with burnout displays that had the crowd leaning on the fence. These weren’t just parade laps – these were full-send passes from machines built to work hard and play even harder, putting torque and attitude on full display. Then came the fire. Two jet cars lit off and turned the volume to max, ripping down the strip in a pair of flame-throwing exhibition passes that shook the ground and snapped every head in the house. It was pure sensory overload – heat, sound, and speed – exactly the kind of show that’s become a signature of Truckin’ For Kids. While the on-track action delivered, the mission remained front and center. Event organizers estimate this year’s event will generate between $65,000 and $70,000 for Shriners Children’s Hospital in Pasadena. From chrome-heavy show trucks to smoke-filled dragstrip action, Truckin’ For Kids once again proved it’s more than just an event – it’s a movement. One where diesel power meets generosity, and every pass down Famoso’s quarter-mile helps push something far more important across the finish line. This story was originally published on May 7, 2026. £100K beckons Europe’s fastest door cars to Santa Pod’s DOORSLAMMERS
‘Doorslammer’ is a drag racing term for a full-bodied car with functioning doors – in other words, your bog-standard saloon. Yet nothing is remotely bog-standard about the ‘saloon cars’ heading to Santa Pod Raceway from across Europe this month for the venue’s annual big-money bonanza shootout, THE DOORSLAMMERS – powered by FuelTech. Yes, they all have roofs and doors, sprung chassis too, but that’s where resemblance ends. A £100,000 prize pot beckons, ‘powered by FuelTech’, the Brazilian/American manufacturer of high-performance engine management and motorsport electronics systems which makes its debut as supporting partner to the event. FuelTech also sponsors the Motorsport UK British Drag Racing Championship and the championship’s 250mph, V8-powered Pro Modified cars will be prominent among the heavyweights in THE DOORSLAMMERS’ premier VP Racing Pro Doorslammer division. Unlike regulated championships, however, THE DOORSLAMMERS is an outlaw event, a high-performance free-for-all. If racers want to pep up their motors, twist up their turbos, in pursuit of the big payout, they can. In another detour from rulebook standards, qualifying results do not determine pairings on an eliminations ladder. Instead, pairings are drawn at random for each round, piling on the instant knockout drama. Yet drag racing does not only revolve around thumping V8s. Europe’s potent quarter-mile menu offers many different flavours. THE DOORSLAMMERS features seven other classes: Turbosmart Pro Street; True Street; Coated Race Bearings Front-Wheel Drive; Four-Cylinder; Tom Wrigley Performance Five/Six-Cylinder; Jeff Bull Race Engines 7.60 Heads-Up; and Williams Bros Big Bracket. Plus, there’s a selection of Scandinavian Top Doorslammers showcasing their own racing style over the eighth-mile. Entries range from the Nordics to the Baltics, Poland to Portugal, and even out to Bulgaria. A wealth of multi-cylinder and FWD ingenuity and innovation exists in Eastern Europe, often overlooked in drag racing’s conventional western scene, and THE DOORSLAMMERS is a beacon for racers eager to swap bumpy airfield runways for Santa Pod’s pristine, championship-quality concrete. Rules governing the Turbosmart Pro Street and True Street classes sound unlikely in such company, but they demand proof of MOTs and road tax. Participating vehicles are indeed road-legal. Meanwhile the Jeff Bull Racing Engines 7.60 Heads-Up class is open to track cars racing on a 7.60-second index and the Williams Bros. Big Bracket is a catch-all for entrants dialling in between 6.99 and 11.99 seconds. THE DOORSLAMMERS Powered by FuelTech takes place from Friday 15th to Sunday 17th May 2026 at Santa Pod Raceway, NN29 7XA, and shares the weekend with the Volkswagen festival VW Breakout. Tickets are bookable only online or by phone – visit https://santapodtickets.com/p/thedoorslammers or telephone the Box Office at 01234 782828. Full event information can be found at https://santapod.co.uk/events/doorslammers/. The post £100K beckons Europe’s fastest door cars to Santa Pod’s DOORSLAMMERS first appeared on Drag Illustrated. Thunder Road Raceway Set to Join NHRA Member Track Network
NHRA officials are excited to announce that newly-reopened Thunder Road Raceway has joined the NHRA Member Track Network in NHRA’s West Central Division (Division 5) Located in Sturgis, S.D, Thunder Road Raceway is preparing for an exciting new chapter as the historic facility, which closed in 2023, has reopened under new ownership and management, bringing 1/8-mile drag racing back to the Black Hills region for the 2026 season and beyond. Formerly known as Sturgis Dragway, the facility first opened in 1987, originally serving as a racing destination during the world-famous Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. The track is in the middle of significant updates and renovations under the leadership of William Lippold and Scott Flockhart, with day-to-day operations led by Jene Hammond. With a shared vision focused on long-term growth, racer experience and community engagement, the new team is committed to restoring and elevating the facility’s presence in the region. “Although I grew up at Bandimere Speedway, my second home track has always been Sturgis Dragway. Its closure in 2023 left a real void in our racing community,” said Jene Hammond, Operations Manager for Thunder Road Raceway. “Thanks to a dedicated group of volunteers and the racing community, we now have the opportunity to bring it back. Being part of this effort and giving back to a place that means so much to me is incredibly special. This marks a new chapter for both the track and the city of Sturgis.” The revitalized 1/8-mile facility will host a variety of racing programs, including the popular Summit E.T. Series, presented by Hoosier, alongside additional events designed to serve both seasoned competitors and new racers entering the sport. As final touches continue, the team is working to finalize plans for a full season of competition and events, youth programs and education, signaling a strong return for one of the region’s most recognizable racing venues. With a renewed focus on safety and accessibility, the track aims to provide a welcoming environment for both racers and fans. Thunder Road Raceway is also expected to play a key role in supporting regional motorsports and motorcycle culture, offering opportunities for community involvement and continued growth of grassroots drag racing in South Dakota and the surrounding areas. “This project is a testament to the strength and passion of the Sturgis drag racing community,” said Nick Duty, NHRA West Central Division Director. “The group behind this effort refused to let the facility sit idle. They’ve taken on the challenge of revitalizing the track with the right priorities in mind — serving racers and fans. We’re excited to welcome Thunder Road Raceway back into the Division 5 family.” For more information on NHRA, including the full 2026 schedule, visit www.nhra.com. Gear Showcase: Summer Gear
Summer weather is just around the corner. This month, we have a curated list of companies and products aimed at equipping your summer overlanding adventures. From making it easier to get your bike out on the trail to upping your solar power to take advantage of the summer sun, to the ultimate in camping comfort, here are eight pieces of gear for your upcoming adventures. 1UP USA — RakAttach XL The RakAttach XL is built for serious hauling, delivering a heavy-duty solution that transforms how gear is transported and accessed. The XL boasts a 375 lb weight capacity, significantly more than the 275 lb standard RakAttach version, making it ideal for fully loaded bike racks, cargo carriers, or a combination of both. Its robust, powder-coated steel construction ensures durability in harsh conditions, while maintaining a secure hold on valuable equipment. Designed for convenience as much as strength, the RakAttach XL pivots up to 90 degrees to either the driver or passenger side depending on your choice, allowing full, unobstructed access to a vehicle’s trunk, tailgate, or rear cargo area without the need to remove mounted gear. Stability and ease of use are central to its design. The wedge-style anti-wobble hitch system tightly secures the mount within any standard 2-inch receiver, virtually eliminating unwanted movement and sway during transit. An included support jack adds another layer of stability, particularly when handling heavier loads, and can be conveniently stowed when not in use. This combination of thoughtful engineering and rugged materials ensures that even the most demanding hauling tasks feel controlled and reliable. Beyond its core function, the RakAttach XL offers a versatile platform for customization. Users can expand their setup with an Accessory Panel System, featuring a MOLLE-compatible Main Panel for organizing tools and outdoor gear such as traction boards or axes, along with optional Side Panels and a fold-down Table for trailside work or cooking. Alternatively, a Roof Rack Bracket provides a streamlined way to securely mount a Roof Rack right to the system. As a dedicated hitch extension compatible with a wide range of racks, the RakAttach XL adapts to evolving needs, supported by a full ecosystem of accessories and replacement parts designed for long-term performance. MSRP: $899.00 BUY NOW Boondock Decks — Flat Decks and Truck Boxes Boondock Decks is a Canadian-built brand focused on redefining utility, durability, and organization for modern overland and work-ready trucks. Designed and manufactured with real-world use in mind, their flat deck systems provide a rugged, streamlined platform that transforms a pickup into a highly capable expedition or jobsite vehicle. Built from high-quality materials and engineered for strength without unnecessary weight, Boondock Decks deliver a clean, low-profile design that maximizes usable space while maintaining a sleek, integrated look. At the core of the system is a purpose-built flat deck that eliminates the limitations of traditional truck beds. Its open, modular design allows users to customize their setup for hauling gear, mounting accessories, or supporting overland builds. The deck is reinforced to handle demanding conditions, from remote backcountry travel to heavy-duty daily use, all while maintaining easy access from all sides of the vehicle. Seamlessly incorporated into the design are Boondock’s precision-fit storage boxes, which are not an add-on but an essential part of the system. These boxes are engineered to sit flush within the deck structure, providing secure, weather-resistant storage without compromising deck space or aesthetics. The result is a cohesive solution where tools, recovery gear, and expedition essentials remain organized, protected, and instantly accessible. Boondock Decks prioritizes practical functionality, clean design, and long-term reliability. Every detail—from mounting points to material selection—is considered to ensure the system performs in harsh environments while remaining user-friendly. Whether outfitting a truck for overlanding, work, or both, Boondock Decks offers a unified platform that enhances capability, efficiency, and overall vehicle performance. MSRP: Varies based on application BUY NOW Giant Mouse Knives — GMF1-XL Green Canvas Knife The GMF1-XL stands as a bold evolution of a minimalist icon, specifically designed to offer a more substantial grip and increased blade presence without sacrificing the clean, sophisticated lines that define the GiantMouse brand. This green canvas micarta version is built for the demanding user, featuring a 3.47-inch drop-point blade made from N690 Cobalt high-performance steel. The blade is finished with a fine stonewash that hides wear while providing exceptional edge retention and corrosion resistance for long-term field use. Its larger footprint and refined ergonomics were immediate industry standouts, leading to the product being honored with the 2024 Best Fixed Blade award at the Atlanta Blade Show. By scaling up the original design, GiantMouse has produced a tool that transitions seamlessly from heavy-duty campsite chores to detailed everyday utility. True to its modular spirit, the GMF1-XL is designed to be adapted to the user’s specific environment and aesthetic preferences. While the textured green canvas micarta scales provide a confident, moisture-resistant grip in wet conditions, they can be entirely removed for those who prefer a slim, skeletonized profile or a custom wrap. For those seeking a different weight and classic feel, the GMF1-XL is also available in a precision milled brass handle version, which pairs an Elmax satin steel blade with the substantial, evolving patina of solid brass. Carrying the tool is equally customizable; while it ships with a premium, handcrafted Italian leather sheath, specialized KYDEX sheaths are also available for those who require a more tactical, high-retention carry system. These Italian-made fixed blades represent a perfect harmony of rugged utility and high-end manufacturing, ensuring the GMF1-XL remains a formidable and versatile companion for any task. MSRP: $245.00 BUY NOW Kimbo Campers — Kimbo 6 Series Built for you, if you prioritize movement over mass, the Kimbo 6 Series is a lightweight, all-aluminum truck camper designed for your midsize platform like the Tacoma—keeping you fast, nimble, and ready to go further. No complexity. Just a simple, durable system that lets you say “yes” to the road ahead. Because that’s the point. The unplanned turn. The dirt road you weren’t sure about. The freedom to go—and keep going. Kimbo isn’t just along for the ride. It’s what makes the decision easy. Built differently—on purpose. Founded in 2016 by inventor and entrepreneur Mark King, Kimbo Campers takes a systems-first approach to design—prioritizing durability, repairability, and simplicity for you over feature bloat. With 600+ campers in the field, every design decision is grounded in your real-world use, not showroom appeal. The result is a single-material, monocoque aluminum structure that eliminates common failure points found in multi-material RV construction—delivering long-term reliability across climates and conditions. A platform, not a product. The Kimbo 6 is modular, upgradable, and built to evolve with you—whether that means your weekend escapes, creative work on the road, or extended off-grid travel. It sits in a unique position for you between tents and vans: more capable than one, far simpler and more agile than the other. What you get is freedom—engineered. A camper that’s radically durable. Intentionally simple. And ready for wherever your truck can take you. That makes it a practical solution for setups where every inch and pound matters. An internal Battery Management System (BMS) protects against overcharging, over-discharging, and temperature extremes, helping ensure consistent performance in demanding conditions. With an IP65 rating, the battery is built to withstand dust and moisture often encountered off-road. MSRP: $1,399 BUY NOW Wander Voyager — Sprinter AWD Expedition Vehicle Wander Voyager’s Sprinter AWD model redefines what a compact expedition-grade vehicle can be. Built on the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 3500XD 170” AWD cab chassis, it pairs a high-output 4-cylinder diesel engine (211 hp, 332 lb-ft) with a 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission and a 24.5-gallon fuel tank. Its advantage begins with the camper box: a 2.3” XPS-insulated fiberglass structure that outperforms regular van shells and creates unbeatable four-season comfort. Off-grid systems include a 12V 10 kWh battery bank, 6000W inverters, 1300W of solar, and generous water tanks: 60 gallons fresh, 40 gallons grey, and 20 gallons black. 1320Video Founder Kyle Loftis Passes
Kyle Loftis, the founder of 1320Video and one of the most influential media figures in modern street car and drag racing culture, has passed away. 1320Video announced Loftis’ passing Wednesday afternoon, stating that Loftis died Tuesday night. “Kyle’s passion for motorsports inspired millions of people around the world and we will never forget what he has done to grow our beloved sport,” the company said in its statement, adding that Loftis’ “enthusiasm, kindness and creativeness was contagious.” Loftis founded 1320Video in 2003, long before YouTube, Instagram, Facebook and other social platforms became the dominant distribution points for automotive media. What began as one enthusiast shooting photos and sharing them on message boards grew into one of the most recognizable brands in grassroots performance, street car, and drag racing coverage. Based in the Midwest, 1320Video built its identity around documenting the cars, drivers, events, and culture that were often overlooked by traditional motorsports media. Its coverage stretched across drag racing, street racing, dyno shootouts, car shows, roll racing, and major enthusiast events. The platform’s rise coincided with a major shift in the way fans consumed motorsports content. As social media and video platforms grew, 1320Video became a bridge between underground street car culture and a global audience. The brand’s coverage helped introduce countless fans to events like Hot Rod Drag Week, Race Week, TX2K, FL2K, Cash Days, Street Car Takeover, and other gatherings that became central to the modern street car movement. It also helped launch the superstar status of Cleetus McFarland, the alter ego of Garrett Mitchell, who was working for 1320Video when he filmed his first video as Cleetus McFarland. “Completely shocked about the loss of Kyle,” Mitchell said on Facebook. “The most influential person on my life. We’re crushed. Please pray for his Mother and close friends, they need it most.” By 2026, 1320Video had built a massive following across multiple platforms, including more than 6 million Facebook followers, nearly 4 million YouTube subscribers, and nearly 3 million Instagram followers. Loftis built a team of similarly talented and hard-working content creators to help him in his mission to take car culture to a new level. “I don’t have words to convey the feelings I’m having right now,” said Scott Witty, one of 1320Video’s lead photographers. “Nothing I write seems like it’s enough. The last 15 years of my life have been spent with 1320 Video and every bit of it has been a dream. Today feels like a nightmare as we have lost Kyle Loftis. My friend and boss who allowed me and everyone else at 1320 to live out our dream lives. My car, my house, and everything else I have is because of what Kyle Built here at 1320. Kyle was one of the most kind hearted passionate people I’ve ever met and the racing world will not be the same without him.” For many racers, fans, builders, tuners, and event promoters, Loftis and the 1320Video team did more than document the scene. They helped define how a generation viewed it. The brand’s videos gave visibility to cars and personalities outside the traditional national-event spotlight, bringing small-tire racing, street car shootouts, road trips, grudge races, and drag-and-drive events to audiences far beyond the local tracks and message boards where that culture first took shape. Loftis’ influence was also felt throughout the media side of the sport. His work showed that handheld cameras, road miles, access, consistency, and a genuine feel for the scene could build an audience as effectively as traditional broadcast production. In doing so, 1320Video helped open the door for the creator-driven motorsports coverage model that is now a major part of drag racing and automotive media. Loftis was also a philanthropist, as his Ice Cream Cruise event has raised more than $750,000 for Omaha non-profits over its 20-year history. Tributes from across the automotive and racing communities began appearing almost immediately after the news was announced, with fans and industry figures remembering Loftis for his impact on the sport, his energy at events, and his role in helping bring street car culture to a worldwide audience. Drag Illustrated extends its condolences to Loftis’ family, friends, the 1320Video team, and the countless racers, fans, and creators impacted by his work. Perfect Performance: Hogan Siblings Talk PDRA Jr. Dragster No. 1 Qualifying Double-Up
Siblings have qualified No. 1 together in the Red Line Oil PDRA Drag Racing Series’ Jr. Dragsters classes before – multiple times, in fact – but siblings qualifying No. 1 with “perfect” passes was unheard of until McKenzee and Jayden Hogan accomplished the feat at the recent Summit Racing Equipment East Coast Nationals presented by FuelTech at Darana Motorsports Park – Benson, NC. In PDRA Pro Jr. Dragster, drivers qualify against the 7.90 index. Classic Graphix Top Jr. Dragster, the younger division, sets the qualifying order based on reaction time. At the East Coast Nationals, McKenzee ran a 7.900-second pass to qualify No. 1 out of 44 drivers attempting to make the 32-car field. Five other drivers ran 7.90s behind her. Brother Jayden then cut a .000-second reaction time to lead Top Jr. Dragster, where two drivers went .00 behind him. “PDRA races always have our hearts pounding,” said their father, Skip Hogan. “All three qualifiers normally have our stomachs in our throats. During the PDRA race at Darana Motorsports Park was the first time we had both kids in their respective classes solidly. Friday during the second qualifier when we saw Jayden put a .000 on the board we were beyond thrilled. And then during the very same qualifying round, Kenzee put a 7.900 and we were beside ourselves, grinning from ear to ear. We were so proud of both of them. We knew there was still a chance that Kenzee could lose her spot if someone went faster, but we were hopeful. Saturday morning’s qualifier came and went. We couldn’t believe it. They did it.” PDRA records suggest siblings have qualified No. 1 together three times in series history, but using “perfect” performances of a 7.900 E.T. and a .000 reaction time to do so hadn’t occurred until the Hogans did it. The siblings took home $100 low qualifier bonuses from Classic Graphix, as well as custom No. 1 qualifier Victus baseball bats. “I was so excited,” McKenzee said. “I saw that 7.90 come up and couldn’t believe it.” “I have been working really hard on my lights and was excited I got No. 1 with my sister,” Jayden added. The PDRA’s Jr. Dragster classes, especially Pro Jr., have become increasingly competitive over the last several years as second- and third-generation young drivers hone their skills with hopes of someday moving up to “big cars,” whether that means a bracket dragster or a 3.50-second Pro Mod. Graduates of the PDRA Jr. Dragster program include two-time PDRA Pro Street world champion turned Pro Boost contender Ethan Steding, two-time PDRA Pro 632 world champion turned Pro Nitrous standout Amber Denton, and NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle star Brayden Davis. “Qualifying for Pro Junior is extremely difficult,” McKenzee said. “Everyone is always on their game.” With the No. 1 qualifier double-up checked off, the Hogan family now hopes to put both cars in the winner’s circle together someday soon. “We would like to thank our sponsors: O’Meara Realty, Red Line Oil, WO3, Thornton Motorsports for our horsepower, Computech for our weather station, and all our friends and family who support us,” Skip said. “We would also like to thank PDRA for allowing us to have a place to race and Classic Graphix for sponsoring the Jr. classes.” This story was originally published on May 7, 2026.
