  1. Honda Motor Company said its profit for the nine months through December dropped 42% compared to a year earlier, mainly because of U.S. tariffs and a changing EV market. Honda posted a 465.4 bilion yen ($3 billion) profit over the three quarters, down from 805.2 billion yen ($5.2 billion) as sales dropped 2.2% to 15.98 trillion yen ($102.6 billion) from the previous year, AP News reports. The Japanese carmaker maintained its full fiscal year profit target forecast at 300 billion yen ($1.9 billion). That marked the second consecutive year that profit declined at Honda during the April through December period, although the profit drop was much smaller in the same period last year at 7.4%. Effectively, this means that Honda’s car making unit is now in the red, having posted an operating loss of 166.4 billion yen ($1.07 billion) over the three quarters, down from an operating profit of 402,617 billion yen ($2.6 billion) a year earlier. EV Slowdown Cost Honda $1.7 Billion From April Through December 2025 Kristen Brown Honda attributed its automobile business’ operating loss to one-off costs related to its EV operations, including asset write-downs, as well as the impact of U.S. tariffs. The automaker said the slowdown in electric vehicle sales in the U.S. was one major negative factor. As a result, the company lowered its EV sales projections, estimating that EVs will make up 20% of its global sales by 2030, compared to a previous target of 30%. The automaker has also canceled development of some EV models. Even though the Japanese automaker is far from an EV powerhouse–it sells only two EVs in the U.S., the GM-developed Honda Prologue and Acura ZDX–Honda still had to book about $1.7 billion in one-time EV-related provisioning and impairments for the nine months ending in December. U.S. Tariffs And Rollback Of EV Programs Were Big Negative Factors Cole Attisha Another big negative factor for Honda was the fact that the White House last year imposed tariffs of 15% on Japanese-made automobiles and auto parts. Initially, U.S. President Donald Trump imposed a 25% tariff, but agreed to lower it to 15% after Japan promised to invest $550 billion in U.S. projects. The Japanese economy, which relies heavily on exports, is very vulnerable to tariffs from the U.S., it biggest auto export market. Tariffs aside, the Trump administration has canceled prior programs that encouraged environmentally cleaner cars and trucks like EVs, such as ending the EV federal tax credit after Q3 2025 and rolling back stringent fuel economy requirements that pushed automakers toward electric vehicles. Honda joins other global automakers that have overestimated EV demand and have taken massive financial burdens because of that, such as Stellantis (a $26.2 billion write-down during the second half of 2025), Ford ($19.5 billion), GM ($7.6 billion), and Volkswagen Group ($6 billion). 2. Ferrari’s Next ActFerrari has rolled out some of its most boundary-pushing models in recent years, broadening its lineup with offerings such as the V6 plug-in hybrid–powered 296 and the Purosangue SUV. For 2026, the Italian marque is set to expand its range further with five new models, according to comments made during an earnings call on Tuesday, reported by Reuters. Details surrounding the upcoming models remain scarce. However, one confirmed release slated for this year is the Luce, which will mark Ferrari’s first fully electric vehicle. One early detail to emerge is that the interior has been designed by LoveFrom, the creative firm founded by Sir Jony Ive and Marc Newson. Ive previously served as the chief design officer at Apple, where he was responsible for shaping products such as the iMac and iPhone. Ferrari The Likely CandidatesGiven that the Luce is an entirely new vehicle, the remaining planned releases for this year could consist of different variants of existing models. One possibility is that the Amalfi, the brand’s entry-level model launched last year, could receive a convertible counterpart, which, based on the brand's naming conventions, would likely be called the Amalfi Spider. There could also be new additions to Ferrari’s high-performance Special Series lineup, as the 12Cilindri currently lacks a more extreme track-oriented counterpart similar to the Competizione version offered on its predecessor, the 812. Market speculation has also suggested that the Purosangue could gain a V8 option alongside its existing V12 powertrain, mirroring the approach seen in the GTC4 Lusso. Again, these remain unconfirmed reports and should be taken with a grain of salt. Ferrari Entering the EV EraFor now, the Luce EV is slated to launch in May 2026. It will be among the first fully electric models to come from a traditional supercar marque, with Lamborghini having only previewed its intentions so far via the Lanzador concept, which could ultimately emerge as a PHEV. Brands such as McLaren and Aston Martin have also signaled interest in entering the EV space, though both appear to be taking a cautious approach amid the current slowdown in EV demand. This slowdown has also influenced Ferrari’s approach to its future lineup. By 2030, the brand now aims for a mix of 40 percent combustion models, 40 percent hybrids, and 20 percent EVs – a notable shift from its earlier plan, which called for 40 percent EVs, 40 percent hybrids, and 20 percent combustion-powered cars. 3. Cameras Are Everywhere, but Darkness Is Still a ProblemIt wasn’t long ago that car cameras were a luxury feature. Now, backup cameras are required by law in the US, and even entry-level SUVs come with surround-view systems. As vehicles have grown larger and sightlines have shrunk, cameras have stepped in to fill the gaps that mirrors and windows can’t cover. But even with all that progress, most car cameras still hit a wall at night. As soon as daylight fades, image quality takes a nosedive. Streetlights can wash out parts of the picture, headlights turn details into white blobs, and shadows hide anything outside the main beam. Even the best high-res cameras struggle when lighting gets patchy. This problem isn’t new, though, and automakers have tried to patch over this weakness with brighter sensors and smarter software, but the core problem remains. Mercedes-Benz, though, appears to be taking a different approach – rethinking how in-car cameras capture and process images, if its latest patent is any indication. Mercedes-Benz A Different Way of Capturing What the Camera SeesMercedes-Benz filed the patent with the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) over two years ago (patent no. 20260039966, if you want to dig into the details yourself). Published just last week, the document describes a camera system designed to handle challenging lighting conditions, including near-total darkness. Instead of sticking with a single video feed, the system cycles quickly through different types of images – standard color, infrared for low-light, and shots at various exposure levels. Each frame picks up details that the others might miss, filling in the gaps that usually get lost after dark. Timing is what makes it work. The camera switches between modes so quickly that neither the driver nor the onboard systems notices any change. The software then blends all the data into a single video feed, balancing color, brightness, and shadow detail. The result is a camera that can see more than a typical setup, without needing a bunch of extra hardware. James Riswick Practical UseMercedes’ new camera system could make a difference for everything from driver monitoring to interior sensors and exterior cameras that have to work after dark. Infrared lets the system see without visible light, and switching exposures helps keep both bright and shadowy areas clear. The system’s software-driven design also means it can adapt on the fly – changing how it captures images if there’s sudden glare or a quick shift in lighting. That kind of flexibility is becoming more important as cars rely on cameras for automated safety features that need reliable, accurate visuals. Of course, just because it’s patented doesn’t mean it’ll show up in the next Mercedes you see on the road. Automakers file plenty of ideas that never make it to production. Still, patents like this give us a window into the challenges engineers are working on – and where the next generation of camera tech might be headed. View the full article
  4. Not Your Typical Budget EVToyota reintroduced the C-HR as an all-electric model, and many expected it to compete with more affordable EVs like the Nissan Leaf and Chevrolet Bolt EV. Instead, the new C-HR carries a starting price of around $38,450, including destination fees – though buyers in some regions can now take advantage of substantial new discounts. A report from CarsDirect states that the 2026 Toyota C-HR is available with a $5,000 discount for cash buyers, lowering its price to $33,450. That puts it just $100 above the newly redesigned 2026 RAV4, which the Japanese marque has made hybrid-only. With the incentive applied, the C-HR moves closer to the $30,000 price point that several automakers – including Ford – are targeting for their upcoming EV models. Toyota A Performance EdgeAs standard, the SE and XSE trims come equipped with a dual-motor setup that enables all-wheel drive. Combined output is rated at 338 horsepower, allowing the crossover EV to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.9 seconds. That gives it an edge over comparable rivals such as the Volvo EX30 Single Motor (268 horsepower) and Kia Niro EV (201 horsepower). In terms of range, the Toyota C-HR is rated at up to 290 miles on a single charge, with a 10–80-percent DC fast-charging time of approximately 30 minutes. That figure surpasses the range of comparable rivals such as the Kia Niro EV and Volvo EX30, while the Nissan Leaf SV+ comes close at an estimated 288 miles. Given that the Toyota EV shares its platform with the upcoming Subaru Uncharted, both AWD models are offering similar powertrain capabilities. Toyota The Real DealFor buyers considering financing instead of paying cash, the report also uncovered a zero-percent financing offer for up to 72 months through Toyota Financial Services. With this deal, the total cost could come in at around $34,500, compared to more than $40,000 with a typical loan that carries interest. CarsDirect describes the zero-percent financing option as the “better deal.” That lowers the estimated monthly payment from $686 to $485, a reduction of roughly 30 percent. The C-HR joins the bZ in Toyota’s U.S. EV lineup. For buyers seeking additional space, the brand also recently introduced the Highlander EV, which is slated to arrive for the 2027 model year. 5. Nice Paint, But...One typically has to pay extra for white pearl paint. It's understandable, though, as it requires a unique mix that varies from one manufacturer to another. It costs a little more to produce, and that cost is, well, transferred to us if we really want that color. White pearl easily adds several hundred dollars to a car's total price, so one expects it to at least stay shiny for a couple of years. However, that color is giving headaches to Nissan and Toyota owners in Japan. Peeling ProblemsAccording to the Japanese website Creative311, owners of Toyota and Nissan vehicles have reported that their white pearl-finished cars are peeling paint. It's become relatively widespread and often affects vehicles built from 2010 to 2015. Granted, many years have passed since the cars rolled off the line, but one would expect the paint to fade, not fall off in chunks. So far, there have been about 150 reported cases on Nissan's end at the time of writing. Several Toyota owners have also come forward, though the exact number of reports was not provided. Some have noticed paint bubbling before the coat flaked off the car. The likely reason is that the batch of paint used was unable to truly stick to the primer. Common Models AffectedIt's hard to determine the scope of the paint issues or the number of vehicles affected. That said, the paint issue could affect millions of customers, particularly in Toyota's case. For Nissan, some commonly affected models include the Cima, Fuga (Infiniti M), Teana (Altima), Sylphy (Sentra), Note, and X-Trail (Rogue), to name a few. In other words, most of its volume sellers in Japan have cases of white pearl paint peeling. As for Toyota, it affects a great deal of its popular models, including the Prius, Corolla (they have a different version), Alphard, Vellfire, and Land Cruiser Prado (Lexus GX). Some are LuckyRepainting a car isn't cheap, but some Nissan dealers in Japan are willing to do it for free for affected owners. Mind you, not all were that generous, but the fact that some have been fixing up customer cars with no cash out is worthy of mention. The Nissan dealers have also reported these cases straight to their headquarters, although it's unknown if the company has taken official action. As far as we know, there is no recall in place, but several Nissan dealers are repainting vehicles for free at their own volition. However, Toyota owners in Japan are facing an uphill battle at the moment. While there was a recall for select models, even those not part of it have been experiencing paint peeling as well. Because of that, many dealers are treating this as a paid repair. That has left owners with a dilemma: shell out big bucks to repaint the whole car or just, well, live with it. If it's any consolation, there are a few dealers giving out free repairs. View the full article
  6. Mazda has emerged as the top-rated brand in the new Safety Verdict assessment by Consumer Reports. The newly released assessment is a comprehensive look at how safe modern vehicles are, including everything from crashworthiness to emergency handling, key driver-assistance technologies equipped as standard, and even a good usability rating for interior controls. Ultimately, the top brands do the best job of protecting you in a crash while helping you avoid one altogether. Mazda outperformed every other brand, including premium makes like Volvo that are often associated with top-tier safety. A New Approach To Assessing Vehicle Safety II For years, vehicle safety was built exclusively around protecting occupants in a crash. However, there are many other aspects to engineering a safe vehicle, and Consumer Reports (CR) takes all those into account for its Safety Verdict. The “Basic” tier of safety involves vehicles meeting the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s federal motor vehicle safety standards. Things get much more involved in the “Better” tier, where CR assesses aspects like routine handling and braking tests, a Good or Acceptable rating in the small-overlap front crash test run by the IIHS, and at least an Acceptable rating in the side crash test. This category also considers whether front- or all-wheel drive are standard, as this can make for safer handling in ice, rain, or snow. C Vehicles with a curb weight of at least 2,500 pounds are scored higher, as lighter cars are at an increased risk in a crash. Ironically, Mazda still outperformed other brands despite its MX-5 Miata being one of the few vehicles with standard rear-wheel drive and a curb weight of under 2,500 lbs. In the “Best” safety tier, CR considers the following: How distracting infotainment systems and controls areWhether auto emergency braking, blind-spot warning, and rear cross-traffic alert are standardA Good rating for the side crash testAt least an Acceptable rating in the moderate-overlap front crash test Zac Palmer Tesla and Volvo, for example, score well in crash tests but ranked poorly in the study due to their distracting interior controls. “A safe car has predictable handling and braking in everyday driving and emergencies, controls that don’t distract you, technology that can prevent a crash in the first place, and a design that protects occupants if a crash occurs,” said Emily A. Thomas, PhD, associate director of auto safety at Consumer Reports. Mazda Enjoys Another Safety Accolade Joe Santos For a while now, Mazdas have set themselves apart from the competition with exemplary safety standards. Its human-centered safety philosophy has helped it attain an almost complete set of Top Safety Pick+ awards from the IIHS—the agency’s highest rating. A model like the CX-70 SUV has no holes in its safety package, with the IIHS and NHTSA both reporting near-perfect scores for the crossover. "Safety is foundational to Mazda's engineering philosophy, and we are honored that Consumer Reports has recognized our unwavering commitment to helping protect drivers, passengers, and everyone who shares the road," said MNAO Director of Vehicle Safety Jennifer Morrison. "This recognition reflects the work of our global engineering teams to integrate advanced safety technologies and outstanding vehicle dynamics into every model we build." One does wonder if the all-new CX-5 will continue this stellar reputation when it arrives. It’s the first Mazda in the U.S. to adopt a much more screen-heavy user interface, something that CR criticized Volvo and Tesla for. Mazda was followed by Genesis, Acura, Lincoln, and Hyundai in the rankings. Related: Inside Mazda’s Safety Philosophy: Why Driver Support Matters More Than Automation Our Take: Safety Ratings Done Right Mazda CR’s new Safety Verdict is a more realistic overview of the safest vehicles you can buy. As cars become more advanced and lifesaving technologies are democratized, it’s crucial for safety tests to evolve at the same rate. A plethora of safety equipment can be overshadowed by a vehicle that’s needlessly distracting from behind the wheel. And, while large vehicles are perceived as safer, they can increase the odds of you getting into a crash in the first place, as they’re typically harder to stop and control in emergency situations. Furthermore, if Mazda—a mainstream brand with generally affordable vehicles—can include key safety tech as standard, there’s no reason why other brands should still be listing features like blind-spot warning as options. The Safety Verdict effectively takes into account all these aspects and penalizes automakers for prioritizing one aspect of safety while neglecting another. Ultimately, that helps all of us make better vehicle choices based on safety standards. View the full article
  7. A Hard LessonThe Mercedes-Benz EQS is still around, but it's already safe to say that it has failed to meet market expectations. It was being outsold by the fuel-fed S-Class by a huge margin, and never exceeded 30,000 unit sales worldwide. The EQ model experiment had fallen flat even before it was over. Mercedes-Benz has since learned from this very expensive lesson. Its latest EV models are integrated within its established vehicles. Prime examples of that include the redesigned CLA and, more recently, the new-generation GLB. Soon, there will be more, including an S-Class EV. Mercedes-Benz Flagship EV, Take TwoYes, you heard that right. Mercedes-Benz has unfinished business in that category, and they're undeterred by the failure of the EQS. It was confirmed by Mercedes development chief Jörg Burzer while speaking to Automobilewoche. Don't expect it to arrive in a year or two, though, but it will surely replace the EQS. Mercedes-Benz won't be making the same mistake twice. The new EV flagship will be part of the S-Class family instead of a separate model. It's also likely to feature more conventional styling. Mercedes-Benz S-Class-Based or Different Platform? It's still unknown what approach Mercedes-Benz will take for the EV S-Class. That said, there are two ways to go about it. They could either base it on the ICE model and adapt an electric powertrain from it, or build a separate platform for it while still badge it as an S-Class. If it takes the first approach, it will be similar to what BMW did with the current 7 Series. It's cost-effective and accelerates development time, but it will require weight and packaging compromises. Building a separate platform is more expensive, but it gives engineers greater flexibility to optimize battery size and interior volume. Mercedes-Benz Thinning CompetitionWhile we're glad that Mercedes-Benz is keeping the S-Class around, it's hard times for the flagship luxury sedan right now. As consumers migrate into SUVs and crossovers, large sedans just aren't selling as much anymore. Sure, the S-Class' main rival, the BMW 7 Series is still doing fine, but if you look at the other competition, it paints a pretty grim picture. Audi doesn't know what to do with its A8, and its future is in serious doubt. Jaguar is preparing a new EV sedan, but has been out of the game for quite some time already. Lexus has axed the LS, ironic that it's the car that shook up the segment, and will be turning it into a luxury minivan. The challenge now is to make these cars special in a way that they'll lure potential buyers out of SUVs and back into a traditional plutocrat sedan. Mercedes-Benz View the full article
  8. Aftermarket SupportOne major aspect of car ownership has always been self-modification. This gives the owners the freedom to express themselves and their personalities through their cars. When it comes to electric vehicles, aftermarket support is still limited; very few brands have invested in dedicated mods. A big name in the modding business has just come up with a kit to help turn your humdrum BMW i5 into a sporty-looking EV. AC Schnitzer BMW i5AC Schnitzer is one of the better-known tuning and modding firms, and it just released a very aggressive-looking body kit for the i5. Looking at the photos, AC Schnitzer decided to showcase the kit on the already sporty-looking M version of the i5 platform. Because the i5 body remains largely the same across the range, the AC Schintzer parts and kit can be used on other standard i5 variants. One thing made apparent by the photos is that AC Schnitzer respected and appreciated the i5's form; the kit looks very subtle and, even more so, like an OEM part. The front splitter is well integrated and not overdone. The same can be said for the side skirts and rear trunk spoiler. If you look even closer, you'll see a roof spoiler that looks like it came standard from the factory. A major difference made by the AC Schnitzer teams is the inclusion of new rims. On this i5, the 21-inch rim is available, but there are two-tone and smaller 19-inch and 20-inch options. To enhance the stance and overall look of the body kit, the i5 has been lowered by 0.98 inches, which should also improve handling. Owners can also opt for wheel spacers to widen the stance by 0.79 inches. Available in ICE variants tooWhile this kit is exclusive to the EV i5, AC Schnitzer also offers kits for the gasoline- and diesel-powered 5 Series. Moreover, internal combustion engine cars can be fine-tuned for actual engine performance, as opposed to the i5's aesthetic-only approach. It would be interesting to see whether third-party tuners like AC Schnitzer can also tweak full EVs in the future. Given EVs' inherent performance capabilities, it could make good business sense to enter EV tuning. In the meantime, I don't think anyone will disagree that the current body kit enhances the i5's look. View the 2 images of this gallery on the original article View the full article
  9. Not Its First RodeoCar crashes happen every day, but when the vehicles involved are from high-end automakers, they almost always make headlines. Case in point: a Ferrari LaFerrari recently crashed in China – but there’s more to the story that makes this incident even more intriguing. According to Luxury Launches, this particular LaFerrari appears to be the same one that crashed in China back in 2015. That earlier incident was reportedly caused by aquaplaning—a situation in which the tires lose contact with the road surface due to standing water. As for the recent crash, the exact cause remains unknown, though reports indicate no other vehicles were involved. What seems almost certain, however, is that the repair bill won’t come cheap. A $1.4 Million LessonGiven the LaFerrari’s extensive use of carbon fiber, repair costs are expected to be substantial. When the LaFerrari crashed in 2015, the hybrid hypercar was reportedly sent back to Italy for repairs, which were claimed to cost as much as $1.4 million. That figure is roughly in line with the LaFerrari’s launch price in 2013. At the time, it served as Ferrari’s answer to other hybrid hypercars such as the McLaren P1 and the Porsche 918 Spyder. Together, the trio came to be known as the “Holy Trinity” of hypercars. This particular example was originally owned by Qin Fen, who had the word “King” – his online handle – embroidered on the steering wheel. That detail is one of the key clues cited in reports suggesting this is the same unit that crashed in 2015. The car was reportedly repainted from red to yellow, matching earlier crash photos that showed it in red. Images of the recent incident, now featuring the Ferrari in yellow, were shared by A1 Garage on Instagram. A1 Garage/Instagram The Scar This LaFerrari CarriesThe current owner has not been identified. However, if the car is eventually put up for sale, it wouldn’t be surprising to see it trade at a lower-than-usual price. Crashing a LaFerrari once is already unfortunate; doing it twice is almost unheard of. Ferrari produced a total of 709 LaFerraris – 499 coupes, plus a 500th example built for charity, and 210 Aperta (convertible) models - between 2013 and 2018. The hypercar was eventually succeeded by the F80, which marked the end of Ferrari’s V12 halo lineage by adopting a twin-turbo V6 derived from the brand’s 499P Le Mans race car. 10. Playing With FireIt seems the EV industry just can't catch the break it needs. Beyond overall perceptions and perceived drawbacks, some EV models are also prone to safety and reliability issues. Since EVs became the primary mode of transportation, we've seen reports of cars catching fire for various reasons. Needless to say, the most frightening possibility of EV malfunctions is a "thermal event." Recently, two major vehicle manufacturers have issued safety recalls following National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) investigations. These two brands aren't even related in any way, but the recalls have led to similar findings of a possible fire risk. The brands in question? Hyundai and Jaguar. Hyundai When Two Become OneStarting with Jaguar, according to the NHTSA's safety recall report, the automaker is conducting a voluntary recall campaign affecting the 2021 Jaguar I-Pace. The recall affects 454 units built at the Graz, Austria, assembly plant between late 2020 and 2021. They also noted that vehicles that have already replaced battery packs since then are excluded from this specific recall. The problem concerns the battery pack, which may experience thermal overload, potentially causing smoke or fire. It's been determined upon inspection that the thermal overloading was caused by a folded Anode tab. In Hyundai's case, the affected vehicles newer affecting 2025-2026 models of the Ioniq 5and 9. Specifically, 21 units of the Ioniq 5 and 6 units of the Ioniq 9. According to the safety report recall, the Battery System Assembly (BSA) has a High Voltage Bus Bar. These specific Bus Bars may have been installed with retention bolts that were not sufficiently tightened during supplier assembly. Over time, these loose bolts may cause the bus bars to produce electrical arching, which, – surprise, surprise, – may lead to a risk of fire. Another issue is that the affected vehicles may engage limp-home mode if they detect an issue. Drew Phillips Taking PrecautionsAs scary as these fire risk recalls are, as of the issuance of the NHTSA recall advisories, none of the affected cars or models have actually caught fire or even smoked up. We must remember that safety recalls are precautionary measures implemented by the NHTSA and the brands in order to nip the problem in the bud. Owners of affected models should have their cars properly inspected by the appropriate dealership personnel to avoid any issues. In the case of Jaguar, the feds are telling owners to charge their vehicles to no more than 90%. They are also advised to park away from structures and charge in an outdoor facility. 11. There’s something ironic about the fact that even as competitors like Ford and Stellantis are paring back their own EV programs, Toyota is rapidly ramping up its own. Two new models – the bZ Woodland and C-HR – are set to roll into showrooms in the coming weeks, and on Tuesday evening, the Japanese automaker rolled out yet another entry, an all-electric version of the familiar Highlander. “This new Highlander is designed to be a stylish, high-tech leader in the midsize SUV segment,” David Christ, group vice president of marketing for the Toyota brand, said in a lead-up to the new EV’s global debut in Ojai, California. “Its sleek new look, spacious interior, and cutting‑edge technology make it a great addition to Toyota’s growing lineup of BEVs.” Toyota Plugs In Cole Attisha Toyota has long taken a cautious approach to EVs – a bet that is now paying off at a time when EV demand has slowed down in most key markets, notably including the U.S. It has primarily favored hybrids and plug-in hybrids – with those technologies available on all but two of the models the company currently sells in the U.S. But while sales of battery-electric vehicles have slowed down sharply since the arrival of the second-term Trump administration, Toyota doesn’t want to get left behind. In fact, it could become a leader in the emerging 3-row electric-vehicle segment. With Ford scrubbing plans, only a handful of competitors will be available, notably the Kia EV9 and Hyundai Ioniq 9. And by sticking with the familiar Highlander name, Toyota gains an instant level of recognition that the other players have had to develop from scratch. What is It? Toyota At first glance, the 2027 Highlander EV is likely to feel familiar to Toyota fans. The basic shape doesn’t stray far from the gas-powered model – currently available with a choice of a turbo-four gas engine or a hybrid. There’s a subtle curve to the EV’s roof line, though the overall shape is a bit more boxy, with less of the existing model’s rounded rear haunches. The most notable difference: a sealed upper grille – since there’s no need to pump air into an engine compartment. The EV also gets flush door handles. Aerodynamics are, of course, critical to maximizing range and performance with a battery-electric vehicle. A small, lower grille directs cooling airflow to the battery pack and motors. A full-width lightbar is separate from the Highlander EV’s LED headlamps. The new battery-powered SUV stretches 198.8 inches in total length, with a width of 78.3 inches and a height of 67.3 inches. It makes good use of the 120.1-inch wheelbase, about 8 inches longer than the conventional Highlander, to provide substantial interior space for passengers and cargo – the cabin enhanced by the fact that batteries and key drivetrain components are located underneath the load floor. With the rear bench folded down, the Highlander EV offers up to 45 cubic feet of cargo space. Interior Cole Attisha The interior features a driver-centric layout, with the 14-inch touchscreen serving as the visual centerpiece of the instrument panel. The 12.3-inch LED gauge cluster is reprogrammable. Unlike so many new EVs, Toyota retains hard buttons for key climate controls. The electric SUV will offer buyers an optional Head-Up Display package. Toyota boasts of easy third-row access using an electrically assisted, one-touch folding mechanism for the second row. And it claims there’s ample room for two adults in the back, taking advantage of the EV’s layout. All versions of Highlander EV feature SofTex trim. As befitting a family vehicle, there’s plenty of storage space, starting with a center console featuring an under-tray bin. The kids will appreciate the slots to stow phones and tablets on the back of the front seats. All told, there are 18 separate cupholders. The third-row can be folded over with the pull of a single lever. Powertrain Cole Attisha The 2027 Toyota Highlander will be offered in two trims – but will have a number of drivetrain options, starting with the choice of front and all-wheel drive. There will also be two battery pack options. XLE FWD with 77.0-kWh battery with a manufacturer-estimated 287-mile total driving range rating;XLE AWD with 77.0-kWh battery with a manufacturer-estimated 270-mile total driving range rating;XLE AWD with 95.8 -kWh battery with a manufacturer-estimated 320-mile total driving range rating;Limited AWD with 95.8 -kWh battery with a manufacturer-estimated 320-mile total driving range rating. The XLE FWD single motor package delivers 221 hp and 198 lb-ft of torque. The AWD models all bump that to 338 hp and 323 lb-ft. If the numbers look familiar, the drivetrain choices are shared with the 2026 Toyota bZ. That smaller SUV can hit 60 in a factory-estimated 5 seconds. While Toyota hasn’t released performance data, launch times should be slower considering the Highlander EV’s greater mass. Technology Cole Attisha As one would expect of a family-oriented vehicle, the new EV has plenty of safety and creature comfort tech onboard, depending upon trim and options. That starts with dual wireless smartphone chargers and plenty of USB-C ports throughout the cabin. There’s Toyota’s smart voice assistant, the Toyota Audio Multimedia system, as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There’s the latest version of SiriusXM radio and streaming Spotify. Drivers also get the security offered by a built-in dashcam system. From a safety standpoint, the Toyota Safety Sense 4.0 package includes technologies such as pre-collision warning with pedestrian detection, full-range active cruise control, lane departure and steering alert, road sign assist, and proactive driving assist. American-Made Hyundai The 2027 Toyota Highlander EV will be the automaker’s first American-made battery-electric vehicle. Production is set to begin during the second half of 2026 at the Georgetown, Kentucky plant currently producing the familiar Camry sedan. Batteries will be sourced from the new $13.9 billion plant Toyota opened late last year in Liberty, North Carolina. Look for the new EV to begin rolling into U.S. showrooms “in late 2026,” the automaker said. Pricing will be revealed closer to the on-sale date. Typically, today’s EVs carry a premium of around $5,000 over comparable gas models – though they typically carry more standard gear, as well. By comparison, the 2026 Kia EV9 ranges in price from $56,495 to around $80,000 for a fully loaded top-trim package. View the full article
  12. Coming in 2028Mercedes-Benz is slated to reveal the next-generation A-Class in 2028. While it was never sold as a hatchback in the U.S, it briefly appeared in sedan form from 2019 to 2022. It wasn't a massive hit, though, as more flocked to the sleeker CLA. However, it's long been a staple in the company's European lineup for nearly 30 years. So, what's next for Mercedes-Benz's entry-level offering? Well, it appears that it will be undergoing a radical redesign. At least that's according to a report from Automobilwoche. It's said that it will adopt a minivan/MPV look with some inspiration from crossovers. Mercedes-Benz Going Back to Its Roots? For those who remember, the Mercedes-Benz A-Class started out as a tall hatchback that echoed MPV designs from back in the day. Despite the small footprint, it offered a decent amount of passenger space inside, and there was even a long-wheelbase model offered later on. The A-Class followed that form for two generations until it shifted to a more conventional hatchback design for its third iteration. The 'mini-MPV' look was adapted by the B-Class in 2005 and has served as Mercedes-Benz's more practical alternative to the A-Class since then. However, the B-Class won't be around for that much longer. What to ExpectSpeaking to Automobilwoche, Mercedes-Benz development chief Jörg Burzer said the next A-Class "will be a model that doesn't currently exist in this form." With the discontinuation of the B-Class later this year, there's a good chance that the A-Class will be picking up the slack. It was also claimed that both A-Class and B-Class will be consolidated into one model by sources close to the matter. It's worth pointing out that a previous report mentioned the A-Class being replaced by a different kind of car. At the time, we wrote that it'll slot below the GLA and that it'll be more affordable than the CLA. We reckon this model will be around the size of the outgoing B-Class, but with a little bit of extra ground clearance. Given that it will be pitched as a more practical proposition, it seems unlikely that it'll get an AMG version. If so, it probably explains the report from months ago wherein the A45 could be cancelled before the end of 2026. Mercedes-Benz is already in the process of removing the four-cylinder AMG models, starting with the C-Class and GLC. Mercedes-Benz The ChallengeWe won't know what the final product will look like until 2028, but it's safe to say that we won't see a low-slung hatchback anymore. It also appears that the A-Class sedan won't live to see another generation, given the model's new direction. Well, there's the CLA to cater to those looking for a small Mercedes-Benz sedan. However, this move leaves the brand without a hatchback. Over in Europe, hatchbacks are still a big deal despite a sliding market share, and rivals Audi and BMW could take all the spoils with their A3 and 1 Series models. Sure, giving it some SUV appeal might help sales, but the challenge now will be differentiating it from the GLA and GLB crossovers. Either way, it's a bold move from Mercedes-Benz, and the final product has us all curious about it. Hopefully, it doesn't suffer the same fate as the B-Class. Mercedes-Benz View the full article
  13. Nissan may have been slow in bringing hybridization to U.S. models, but it's reportedly introducing its unusual e-Power tech to America soon, and it plans to develop its more common plug-in hybrid and extended-range EV systems, too. In the meantime, the Japanese automaker is relying on Mitsubishi and its Outlander PHEV, rebadging it as the 2026 Rogue PHEV. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but Nissan has just announced pricing for its first plug-in hybrid for the American market, and it's notably higher than that of the vehicle it rebadged. While a 2025 Outlander PHEV starts at $40,445 (2026 models haven't arrived yet), the 2026 Nissan Rogue PHEV has a base MSRP of $45,990 for the SL trim. Opt for the nicer Platinum grade, and you'll pay at least $49,990 (excluding destination and handling at $1,495). What the 2026 Nissan Rogue PHEV Offers for the Money Nissan View the 3 images of this gallery on the original article The Rogue PHEV is here to keep Nissan customers who want an electrified vehicle happy until Nissan's internally developed alternatives arrive, and with a total driving range of 420 miles, it's not a bad choice. Turn off the engine, and Nissan estimates an all-electric range of 38 miles, with an EPA rating os 64 MPGe. With the full force of the powertrain under your right foot, you get a combined system output of 248 horsepower and 322 lb-ft of torque, which Nissan says will be enough to outpace a non-hybrid Rogue (its 1.5-liter three-cylinder turbo makes 201 hp, delivered to the asphalt through a CVT). But while the non-hybrid Rogue is available as a front-wheel-drive vehicle, the Rogue PHEV is only offered with AWD. Related: Nissan’s 2026 Rogue Super Bowl Spot Uses a ‘Dip Seat’ You Can’t Buy Inside, both trims of the Rogue PHEV get a 12.3-inch driver display and a nine-inch touchscreen infotainment setup with wireless Apple CarPlay. Android Auto users, however, will need to plug in both their crossovers and their smartphones. At least there are four USB ports (two in front, two at the back), and both trims come with heated front seats, Nissan Safety Shield 360 driver aids, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. The extra four grand spent on the Platinum buys a 10-inch head-up display, a nine-speaker audio system from Bose, a power panoramic sunroof, and leather seats. The rears also gain warmers here, helping reduce complaints from the back seat in the middle of winter. Nissan Rogue Range Continues to Expand in 2026 Nissan View the 4 images of this gallery on the original article Fortunately, this plug-in doesn't replace the gas-only 2026 Rogue. Nissan also says an all-new 2027 Rogue Hybrid e-POWER will be launched toward the end of this year. Last year, Automotive News reported that Nissan originally intended to launch this second hybrid in the first half of 2027, but it's now set to introduce it in October. The decision was reportedly made because the loss of the $7,500 federal tax credit has lowered the automaker's expectations for sales of the Rogue PHEV to under 10,000 units in 2026. With the Toyota RAV4 proving popular as always, the Rogue will have its work cut out for it, whatever the powertrain. 14. Toyota-Suzuki: Swapping Badges Since 2019Outside of the U.S., Suzuki and Toyota have been exchanging badges for quite some time already. The first product of the collaboration was with the revived Toyota Starlet and Glanza, which was (and still is) based on the Suzuki Baleno. Since then, several Suzukis bore Toyota badges in select regions, particularly in South Asia and Africa. Of course, Toyota is doing its share too. In Japan, its Noah minivan is also called the Suzuki Landy, while the Indian market has a Suzuki-fied version of the Innova HyCross called the Invicto. Over in Europe, the Corolla Touring (wagon) and RAV4 have S-badged counterparts in the form of the Swace and Across, respectively. Suzuki All-New RAV4 Means an All-New Suzuki VersionOne could say that the badge swap has been pretty effective so far. Otherwise, Suzuki won't be getting the latest generation of the RAV4 and slap its logo on it again. With that, say hello to the second-generation Across, and it's more of a copy-paste effort than the first one. Like before, the new Across benefits from the RAV4 PHEV's powertrain. That means a 2.5-liter engine mated to two electric motors and a 22.7 kWh battery pack. Mind you, that setup is detuned for Europe, so from 320 hp, it's down to a still respectable 304 hp. Those figures are identical to the previous generation, and just like its predecessor, it's the only powertrain option. Suzuki Same Same, But (Slightly) DifferentThe previous Across had a totally different front end from the old RAV4, although the rest of the body was pretty much the same. For the latest version, it adapts the Woodland's front bumper, as well as the rear bumper and wheels. Truth be told, it was easier to differentiate the Suzuki and Toyota versions before. Then again, for those who want the Woodland look but want plug-in hybrid power, the new Across is the way to go. Inside, it's a dead ringer for the new RAV4. From the dashboard layout to switchgear and buttons, you'll be hard-pressed to find any differences between Suzuki and Toyota versions, save for the badge on the steering wheel. As far as we can tell, even the graphics in the infotainment system are straight from the original. In terms of equipment, it's the same as a fully-loaded RAV4. Suzuki Europe-Only ModelGiven that Suzuki Auto pulled out of the U.S in 2012, there's zero chance of this car ever appearing on American soil. It's specifically made for the European market, and it won't be leaving the Old Continent any time soon. Based on the pricing of the outgoing model, the all-new Across is likely to start at around €60,000 or a little over $71,000. Oddly enough, the RAV4 PHEV in Europe has a cheaper base price, although the Suzuki gets more standard kit from the start. Either way, it'll be a lot of cash for a Suzuki, and you thought car prices in America were reaching ridiculous highs. 15. Stellantis’ U.S. sales have been declining for seven consecutive years now, and the company’s top brass told dealers they cannot tolerate this situation anymore. That’s why 2026 is the year that Stellantis sales must start growing again in the U.S.–at least that’s what transpired after a packed closed-door meeting last week between Stellantis senior executives and many of the company’s dealers at the National Automobile Dealers Association annual convention. Dealers Have "All The Tools That They Need" To Make It Happen Getty Images The message after the meeting, as it was conveyed by Stellantis U.S. sales boss Jeff Kommor to The Detroit News, was very blunt. “2026 is the year of execution, and we're counting on our dealers to deliver. We've given them all the tools that they need. Excuses are over. There are no more excuses,” Kommor said. Now, this is not the first time that Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram dealers have been told by the company that a turnaround is imminent; the last time they heard that was last year at the NADA convention in New Orleans. It didn’t seem to make a difference, though, as the carmaker's 2025 U.S. sales dropped by 4%, despite positive third and fourth quarters. So what changed in 2026 to warrant this optimism? According to Kommor, Stellantis’ U.S. sales recovery has to happen this year, as the company is doing everything it can to help its 2,400-strong dealer network increase sales. The goal is a very ambitious one, mind you: a 25% increase year-over-year in retail vehicle sales for 2026. New And Refreshed Models Are Expected To Fuel Growth Is that a realistic objective? Stellantis seems to think so as it relies on many new or refreshed models that are coming this year, especially for the Jeep and Ram brands. Over the next few months, dealers will receive plenty of new vehicles, many with Hemi V8 engines or other gas and mild hybrid powertrain options that Stellantis believes will sell better than the battery-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles it is now distancing itself from. The new models launching this year include the redesigned Jeep Cherokee compact SUV that’s debuting as a hybrid-only model, the all-new Jeep Recon all-electric midsize SUV, the refreshed Grand Cherokee midsize SUV and Grand Wagoneer full-size SUV, as well as the 777-hp Ram 1500 SRT TRX, the Cummins-powered 2026 Ram 2500 Power Wagon, and probably the 2026 Ram 1500 REV Extended Range (formerly known as the Ramcharger). As for Dodge, while no new models are expected this year, the brand recently kickstarted sales of the gas-powered Charger 2-Door and 4-Door muscle cars, which are expected to draw more customers to its showrooms after the all-electric Daytona version has failed to rock the sales charts. Finally, the Chrysler brand’s lineup remains unchanged from last year, consisting exclusively of minivans: the Pacifica and the budget-oriented Voyager. Updated Pricing And Increased Marketing Spending Should Also Help Ram On top of the addition of new models, Stellantis has readjusted pricing and trims across many nameplates, including throughout the Jeep lineup, where dealers previously complained of prohibitive prices. Furthermore, the automaker has also helped dealers clear their lots of several older and unpopular models that piled up, dating back to 2024, such as the Dodge Hornet and Jeep 4xe plug-in hybrids. According to Kommor, starting in late 2025, Stellantis began pouring record levels of money into marketing at regional and local levels to support dealers, while also adopting a more collaborative approach with them to find the best way to market their cars in certain large markets. Stellantis kept a U.S. market share of around 8% in 2024 and 2025, an abrupt decline from a share of 12.5% it had as recently as 2020. Well, at least it’s got a lot of room left to grow. 16. Happy 25th, BMW Hams Hall PlantWhen it comes to vehicle assembly, we often think of the entire car. The thing is, some plants are dedicated to churning out engines, and an example of that is BMW's plant in Hams Hall, Birmingham. This year, it turns 2025, and there's a good chance that the engine in your Mini or Rolls-Royce came from there. It opened in 2001 with its first product being the N42 engine that saw service in many four-cylinder BMW products. Since then, over 7.6 million engines have been produced, and it is currently the main hub for Mini, BMW V8, and Rolls-Royce V12 engines. Mini Early DaysAs mentioned, its very first product was BMW's new family of four-cylinder engines at the time. Dubbed the N42, it was primarily used in the facelifted versions of the E46 3 Series. The models powered by this engine included the 316i, 316ti, 318i, 318ci, and 318ti. The Hams Hall Plant was crucial in mass-producing Valvetronic engines for BMW, especially for the European market, where a majority of 3 Series models are equipped with four-cylinder engines. Despite being based in England, it actually took some time before Mini engines were built there. That's because the first-generation New Minis didn't use BMW engines per se. Instead, the engines were produced by a company called Tritec Motors, a joint venture between Chrysler and the Rover Group, the latter being owned by BMW at the time. BMW Hams Hall built its first Mini engine for the second-generation Mini Hatch that was introduced in 2006. It was known as the BMW N12 and Mini N13 engine, and powered entry-level versions of the second-generation 1 Series and sixth-generation 3 Series models. The engine was made in cooperation with PSA Peugeot Citroën, although the engines that went into the French cars were made elsewhere. BMW Entering ElectrificationThe Hams Hall plant continued making three and four-cylinder engines for both BMW and Mini. But in 2013, it entered a new chapter as it was tasked to build the engine for the interesting but ultimately unsuccessful i8. The plant was the exclusive assembly line for the i8's engine. The i8's engine came from the B38 family that powered non-Cooper Minis and many entry-level BMWs for European and Asian markets. It's a turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine that, with dual electric motors, helped the i8 produce a total output of 369 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque. The B38 engine is still being produced to this day, and some BMW B48 engines are built there as well. BMW V8s and V12sIn 2022, the plant was given yet another assignment. That year, it became the sole assembly line for BMW's V8 engines, as well as Rolls-Royce's V12s. Prior to the move, those engines were made in Germany, and the completed V12s were then sent to Goodwood for Rolls-Royce to put in their vehicles. Today, all BMW S68 engines are manufactured in Hams Hall, and that includes the twin-turbo V8 found in the M models, as well as M Performance V8s and the 760i. That same engine is also used in V8-powered Range Rover and Range Rover Sport models. As for the V12s, those only grace Rolls-Royce motor cars. Rolls-Royce Key to Keeping BMW Group RunningWhile the plant in Steyr, Austria, is still BMW's largest powertrain assembly line, Hams Hall has been doing its fair share of global engine production for BMW and the brands they hold. It will be interesting to see how the plant evolves in this age of electrification, but it's safe to say that it'll keep on churning engines for many more years to come. So, for those who own a Mini, a V8-powered BMW, a Rolls-Royce or all of the above, now it a good time to tip your hat to the folks over at Hams Hall. BMW View the full article
  17. With gas prices behaving more like a roller coaster than a steady expense this year, keeping your eyes on the large price displays at stations has become more work than spotting meme-worthy billboards for local ambulance chasing attorneys. Whether you’re a local commuting through humid Florida mornings or an interstate traveler navigating scenic coastal routes, finding a gas station that offers low-cost gas can feel like a genuine win for your wallet. We’ve sifted through real-time user reports and market data to identify five spots in Florida that are currently offering significant relief. We will caution you that, of all the states and cities we research, Florida pricing seems to be “gamed” more than most, with some stations reporting extremely low-cost gas at various junctures, which feels like an attempt to get people to go out of their way for gas only to be met with disappointment. TrackZone Chevron ($2.47)Address: 3008 US-98 W, Santa Rosa Beach, FLNearby Gas Stations: CEFCO (111 N County Hwy 393) at $2.69 and Exxon (7930 W CR-30A) at $2.57This Chevron station is situated near the scenic Point Washington State Forest and the pristine sands of Santa Rosa Beach, making it a perfect spot to fill up if you’re on vacation or a day trip. This station is currently undercutting its immediate neighbor, CEFCO, by 22 cents, so it’s worth visiting if you’re in the area. Go here for the convenience more than the pricing; it’s tied for the lowest price in the immediate vicinity. If you’re int he area, and spot this Dodge’s Store location, know you’ll be hard pressed to find better pricing elsewhere. Just down the road from the Chevron on our list, Cumberland Farms is a few cents cheaper. While competitive for the region, we don’t suggest driving out of your way to get there unless you’ve got a big tank to fill. Shell ($2.39)Address: 1 W Cervantes St, Pensacola, FLNearby Gas Stations: Circle K (501 E Cervantes St) at $2.67 and TownMart (601 W Cervantes St) at $2.69This Shell station serves the historic North Oakhurst area and is a short drive from the Pensacola Museum of Art in Florida’s panhandle. It’s a good deal cheaper than ost in its area, but like Marathon, we suspect pricing might be a bit gamed. Marathon ($2.17)Address: 2701 NW 36th St, Miami, FLNearby Gas Stations: Mobil (2740 NW 27th Ave) at $2.85 and Chevron (2190 NW 36th St) at $2.87Close to the Miami International Airport, this Marathon is an ideal spot to fill up a rental car, which makes its pricing a bit suspect to us. Its listed price makes it one of the more affordable branded options in this high-traffic Miami corridor, but some reports are incredibly low. While today’s price is reportedly $2.17, don’t be surprised to find gas prices closer to $3 per gallon, here. 18. The Forester Now Leans Hard on ValueLast year, Subaru finally added a hybrid Forester, using Toyota’s proven hybrid system with Subaru’s own all-wheel drive. It was a big move for a brand that’s been slow to go electric, but the result kept the Forester in the running against other compact SUVs. Now, Subaru appears ready to double down. Following recently announced massive price cuts for the WRX, the automaker has turned its attention to one of its core nameplates. For 2026, the Forester lineup sees pricing adjustments on almost every trim level, including the hybrid models. Kristen Brown Thousands of Dollars CutThe base Forester remains unchanged at $29,995, but nearly everything above it is cheaper. Of note, these figures do not include the $1,450 destination and delivery charge. Subaru didn’t cut features or change the lineup. The only real change is the price. Compared with 2025, several trims – including the rugged, gas-only Forester Wilderness – now cost significantly less, with price cuts reaching up to $2,015. Premium Hybrid $36,595 $34,730 -$1,865 Sport Hybrid $39,595 $37,930 -$1,665 Limited Hybrid $41,010 $38,995 -$2,015 Touring Hybrid $43,295 $41,545 -$1,750 Premium (Gas) $33,385 $31,995 -$1,390 Sport (Gas) $36,105 $34,795 -$1,310 Limited (Gas) $37,695 $35,995 -$1,700 Wilderness (Gas) $38,385 $36,995 -$1,390 Touring (Gas) $41,595 $39,995 -$1,600 The higher you go in the lineup, the bigger the price drop. More importantly, the Forester Hybrid is now much closer in price to the gas models, so that’s good news if you’re not keen on going electrified because of the price difference. For anyone comparing the Forester to the RAV4 Hybrid or CR-V Hybrid, Subaru’s numbers now look a lot more attractive. The RAV4, which now comes with an all-hybrid lineup, starts at $31,900, and the CR-V Hybrid at $35,630. Subaru New Forester Sport Onyx EditionThere’s also a new Forester Sport Onyx Edition for 2026. It sits between the regular Sport and the higher trims, and is mostly about looks: dark 19-inch wheels, blacked-out trim, and a black-and-gray StarTex interior with contrast stitching. Under the hood, the Forester Sport Onyx Edition keeps the same pure combustion 2.5-liter boxer engine, CVT, and updated all-wheel drive. The suspension is tuned like the regular Sport. At $36,495 before destination, it fits right into the lineup without pushing prices higher. Subaru says the US-made 2026 Forester range, including the new Sport Onyx Edition, will begin arriving at dealers later this year. 19. ZR1 Misses the Record, Still StunsA stock 2026 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 has delivered a seriously impressive lap at the Circuit of the Americas, reminding everyone how deep Chevrolet’s performance bench now runs despite costing so much less than its peers. Driven by Hennessey President Alex Roys, the ZR1 Coupe equipped with the ZTK Performance Package recorded a 2:13.80 lap time. The run was completed in sub-par weather and less-than-ideal track conditions, with no vehicle modifications and no special allowances. That time leaves the ZR1 about 2.3 seconds shy of the production car lap record set by the Czinger 21C at 2:10.70. That's rare air, and the Corvette’s lap was independently timed, honestly driven, and achieved straight from the factory. It also comfortably surpassed the long-standing benchmark set by the McLaren P1, which previously lapped COTA in 2:17.51. That result alone puts the ZR1 in elite company. Czinger’s Tear - and the ZR1’s CaseThe Czinger 21C has been on a historic run, traveling more than 1,000 miles while setting multiple track records in a matter of days. As a limited-production hypercar, it was engineered with minimal compromise. Its 1,233-horsepower hybrid system, ultra-lightweight structure, and advanced manufacturing methods place it firmly at the cutting edge of modern performance. That’s what makes the Corvette ZR1’s performance so compelling. With a starting price around $175,000, the ZR1 is a mass-produced supercar powered by a 1,064-horsepower twin-turbo V8. It relies on brute force, aerodynamics, and chassis balance rather than exotic construction. The fact that it runs within seconds of a $2 million hypercar and beats legends like the McLaren P1 by a wide margin shows just how far the Corvette has evolved. Hennessey Performance/YouTube View the 1 images of this gallery on the original article Big Win Without the CrownThe ZR1 did not take the COTA production record, but this was far from a disappointment. It was a clean, transparent lap that highlighted real-world performance rather than perfect conditions. Few cars at any price can operate in this territory, and even fewer do so in factory form. With attention already shifting toward the new ZR1X hybrid variant, Chevrolet’s pursuit of outright dominance is clearly not finished. For now, the standard ZR1 has made its point. It may not hold the record, but it has proven it belongs in the same conversation as the world’s fastest machines. 20. A Milestone Years in the MakingDespite facing headwinds in the EV space, the Volkswagen Group has reached a global milestone by producing five million electric drive units. The achievement is spread across the company’s plants in Győr, Kassel, Tianjin, and Zuffenhausen, with the Kassel facility alone producing around 850,000 units last year – a 24 percent year-on-year increase. These electric drive units are used across the Volkswagen Group’s brands, including Volkswagen, Škoda, and Cupra—the latter two are not currently sold in the U.S. Within Volkswagen’s lineup, the units power the ID. family, with the ID.4 currently the brand’s sole EV available in the U.S., as the ID. Buzz will not be offered for the 2026 model year. Volkswagen The Motor That ScaledThe APP550 is the Group’s most popular electric drive unit, offering 40 percent more power and 75 percent more torque than its predecessor. It delivers up to 240 kW (322 horsepower) and 560 Nm of torque (413 lb-ft), while consuming around 20 percent less energy. The company will also introduce two new electric drive technologies: a pulse inverter and the APP290 electric motor. The pulse inverter will be produced in-house, enabling faster development cycles and cost reductions. Meanwhile, the APP290 has been developed for smaller EVs – such as the ID. Polo – with a focus on maximizing range and improving everyday performance. It is expected to deliver between 85 kW (116 horsepower) and 166 kW (226 horsepower) and will use a 400-volt architecture. However, given U.S. market preferences for larger vehicles, the ID. Polo is unlikely to be sold stateside. Volkswagen Confidence in the EV BlueprintThomas Schmall, Volkswagen Group Board of Management member for Technology, said, “Producing five million electric drives is a milestone that underscores Volkswagen’s lead in both the ICE and the BEV segments. Our global development and production network allows us to master all aspects of the electric drivetrain, accelerate innovation, and ensure outstanding quality.” While the milestone represents an impressive achievement for Volkswagen’s EV push, its impact has yet to be felt in the U.S. As such, the company may consider introducing range-extender EVs instead. These vehicles are still propelled by electric motors but can be refueled with gasoline to run a combustion engine that charges the battery, making them better suited for long interstate travel in the U.S. Volkswagen View the 3 images of this gallery on the original article View the full article

  23. If you're in the market for a three-row electric SUV and aren't wowed by the Hyundai Ioniq 9 or the Kia EV9, Sweden offers the Volvo EX90, and for the new model year, it's become more affordable. While the Volvo USA website still only shows the 2025 model, which is exclusively available in twin-motor all-wheel-drive form, Car and Driver reports that the 2026 EX90 will soon be offered in a new, more affordable single-motor RWD variant. In addition, the top-tier Twin Motor Performance trim is much more powerful than before, adding 160 horsepower to its total output figure. Let's examine the cheaper option first. 2026 Volvo EX90 Gets a New Base Trim, Other Models Get More Power Volvo The 2025 EX90's lineup is restricted to the abovementioned Performance trim and the regular Twin Motor model. The latter starts at $81,290, and the former packs another five grand onto that figure, but for 2026, the Twin Motor is $100 pricier and is now the middle trim in the range. The new single-motor base variant starts at $78,090, and while EPA range estimates have yet to be revealed, it's likely to go further than its AWD siblings. This produces 329 hp, while the Twin Motor has been upgraded from 402 hp to 449 hp. The increased performance comes courtesy of the new 800-volt architecture, bringing with it faster charging and, hopefully, fewer software glitches. Related: Why Get a Lexus When Volvo XC90 Makes More Sense to Lease this February Meanwhile, the top-tier Twin Motor Performance has jumped from 510 hp to an impressive 670 hp. That's the same as a Corvette Z06. This boost may come with some compromises, however, as Volvo has previously said that the top Twin Motor trim's maximum range would drop from 310 to 305 miles thanks to the fitment of a smaller, 102kWh battery pack. More information will become available closer to the 2026 EX90's U.S. launch, expected imminently. How the Base 2026 EX90's Pricing Compares to Rivals Volvo While it's good news to learn that the EX90 will soon be priced under $80,000, it doesn't make much of a difference. The 2026 Hyundai Ioniq 9 starts at $58,955 in base S form, and across its six-trim lineup, every option is cheaper, with even the range-topping Calligraphy Design variant starting at $76,490. It's a similar story with the Kia EV9, which, for 2026, starts at $54,900 (Light RWD) and tops out at $71,900 (GT-Line AWD). Even the Rivian R1S is more attainable, starting at $76,900, but at least the new Volvo will beat the Tesla Model X on price. Before this is discontinued, so that Elon can build more robots, the Falcon Wing-door EV starts at $99,990. View the full article
  24. Audi has given the 2026 A6 TFSI–the gasoline model, not the all-electric A6 e-tron–significant mid-model-year hardware and software updates less than a year after its debut as an all-new model for 2026MY. Audi says the updates improve the driving and ownership experience, closely mirroring the new driver and customer-centric features recently announced for the 2026 A5 and Q5 gas models and the 2027 A6 e-tron and Q6 e-tron EVs. Highlights include a new design for the Audi MMI (Multi Media Interface), an updated multifunction steering wheel, new Audi drive select functionality, expanded driver assistance features, upgraded voice control capabilities, and extended connectivity. On top of that, customers also have access to new optional features such as contoured seats and integrated dashcam. New Digital Design Language Helps Simplify The Infotainment System The main update is the all-new digital design language for the three displays of the Audi Digital Stage features, which are said to create a more consistent and familiar appearance throughout the vehicle and myAudi app interfaces. The more modern look integrates a new 3D model of the vehicle shown across the different displays in detail, down to the vehicle’s specific color. The center MMI touch display now has fewer lists and more graphical representations to further reduce distractions by enabling users to recognize the functions more quickly. Users can also distinguish more easily between monochrome embedded Audi apps, which now feature white backgrounds, and third-party apps, which are displayed in color. Furthermore, the voice-activated Audi digital assistant displays new animations, while a clock display is now docked in the upper left of the MMI touch display. Audi Virtual Cockpit And Passenger Display Also Improved Audi As for the Audi virtual cockpit display, it now features reduced icons and a clearer structure for simplified operation. It also gets functional improvements including three unique views–classic round instrument view, navigation view with maps and integrated driver assistance view–that the driver can toggle through via a steering wheel-mounted “View” button. Besides the new Audi design structure, the 2026 A6 TFSI’s infotainment system integrates smartphone interface functions more deeply, allowing users to mirror their smartphone’s navigation, media, and telephone functions directly into the Audi virtual cockpit, as well as in the MMI touch display. As before, the A6 is offered with an available front passenger display, which has also received the new design language and functional improvements. Those include support for an independent Bluetooth headset that will play audio content for the passenger while gaming, playing videos or browsing internet content. At the same time, the driver can listen to any audio source via the vehicle’s sound system–except for what the passenger listens to in the headphones. Touch-Sensitive Buttons Replaced By Scroll Wheel, Built-In Dashcam Now Available Moving on to hardware upgrades, the main one is the updated multifunction steering wheel on all 2026 A6 TFSI models. More specifically, the scroll wheel returns, replacing the previous touch-sensitive interface. All trims also get remote engine start as part of the Audi Connect Care package. An all-new Audi high-resolution dashcam system is offered on the 2026 A6 Premium Plus trim (optional on Premium trim). Integrated directly into the base of the interior rearview mirror, the camera records high-resolution 4K videos of action captured in front of the vehicle. Audi claims that it can produce detailed recordings even in challenging lighting conditions, thanks to High Dynamic Range (HDR) technology and an especially light sensitive sensor. All data and recordings are only saved locally on an owner-supplied removable SD card. The Premium Plus trim also gets Bang & Olufsen front headrest speakers. Trim-Specific Updates The Prestige trim adds the newly available Audi drive select assistant, which automatically adjusts the drive select mode to suit the current driving situation and the driver’s individual driving style. This ensures that ride quality and responsiveness are continuously optimized throughout a journey. Other new standard features on the Prestige trim include Park assist pro with remote functionality, Rear emergency brake assist, and the Top view camera system with 3D view. An optional Luxury package adds Nappa/Pearl Nappa leather individual contour front seats with massage function, and passenger seat memory. The updated 2026 A6 Sedan will be available as U.S. dealers from the second quarter of 2026 with the same starting MSRP of $64,100.
