There have been many iconic popemobiles over the years, and Ford Motor Company was behind probably the most important one, the spectacular 1964 Lincoln Continental customized by coachbuilder Lehmann-Peterson. Commissioned for Pope Paul VI’s 1965 visit to New York, the stretched and modified limo featured an open-air rear compartment allowing the Pope to stand and greet crowds. Another iconic Ford vehicle turned into a popemobile was a 1980 Ford Bronco that Pope John Paul II used during his visit to the U.S. in October 1979. The white two-door pickup truck is widely believed to have helped popularize the term “popemobile” in the media, which is no small thing. The New Ford for the Pope Is Not Exactly a Popemobile Ford Motor Company Fast forward to 2026 and a brand-new Ford vehicle has reached the Vatican as a personal gift from Ford CEO Jim Farley and his wife, Lia, who are devout Catholics. We’re talking about a custom-made 2026 Ford Explorer Platinum AWD hybrid built at Chicago Assembly Plant for Pope Leo XIV, a native Chicagoan. Right off the bat, it’s pretty clear that this is a special vehicle because Ford currently does not make a hybrid Explorer Platinum, so the 3.3-liter V6 hybrid powertrain had to be sourced from the Police Interceptor Utility for this vehicle. The Detroit Free Press learned the story of this unique Ford Explorer from company spokesman Mark Truby. Last fall, the automaker assembled a small team of workers at the Chicago Assembly Plant to build a unique Explorer for “a VIP.” The brief included the highest Platinum trim, an all-black exterior, special hand-stitching on the seats, etchings of the Chicago skyline throughout the cabin, and a hybrid powertrain. After two months of customizing the vehicle, workers were finally told who it was for, and they were understandably very excited and proud to work on it. By mid-February, the finished vehicle was shipped to Rome, where last week, on February 28, Jim and Lia Farley delivered it to Pope Leo XIV in Vatican City. Apparently, they took it for a drive with the Pontiff, who “loved all the Chicago touches,” according to Truby. Pope Leo XIV Enjoys "Driving a Sporty Ride" Ford Motor Company Interestingly, this gift from the Farley family to the pope was supposed to remain private, but the Vatican issued a press release about the gifted vehicle, which is intended for the pope and Vatican to use however they want. Now, Ford is reportedly working on a video documenting the story of the unique Explorer. Jim Farley told the Detroit Free Press that he reached out to the Vatican late last year, asking if the pope might need a new ride. The Vatican was interested in the offer, and that’s how the project began. “Pope Leo XIV has deep roots on Chicago’s South Side — just like Ford. And we thought it would be especially fitting for him to drive an Explorer built at our Chicago Assembly Plant, which has been in continuous operation for more than a century,” Farley said. The pope wanted the car to be painted black and have a hybrid powertrain. Special touches to the car also include seat tags featuring the city of Chicago flag and treadplates with an etching of the Chicago skyline on one end and St. Peter’s Basilica on the other end. The team also added fun touches such as empty boxes of the pope’s favorite pizza place, Aurelio’s in Chicago, and a sign that reads “Da Pope.” Ford also reserved two Illinois vanity plates for the car, "DA POPE" and "LEO XIV." Farley said the pope appreciated all the personalization and the letters from some Ford workers that came included with the car, and that he likes driving it. "I can confirm the Holy Father enjoys driving a sporty ride,” Ford’s CEO remarked.   3. Tesla is facing yet another lawsuit, but this time it's not about failing door handles or an Autopilot crash. New court filings claim that the suspect in last weekend’s deadly mass shooting in Austin had previously assaulted a Tesla employee months earlier while working at one of the company’s facilities. The defendant is suing Tesla for more than $1 million in damages due to negligence. Assault Claim Emerges From Tesla Factory SUZANNE CORDEIRO/Getty Images According to the suit, 65-year-old Tesla employee Lillian Mendoza Brady claims she was assaulted by fellow employee Ndiaga Diagne on December 4, 2025, while both were working at the company’s Austin facility. The lawsuit states that Tesla allowed workers to take prayer breaks in common areas inside the factory. During a prayer break inside the factory, Diagne allegedly grabbed Brady and violently threw her to the ground. The filing argues Tesla either knew or should have known about what it describes as Diagne’s “volatile temperament and propensity for aggression." Brady reported the incident to Tesla and the Travis County Sheriff’s Office at the time, but unfortunately, she did not have his name or access to any security footage from the facility. Months Later, The Same Man Allegedly Opens FireOn 1 March, more than two months after Brady was assaulted, Diagne carried out the mass shooting in Austin’s busy Sixth Street entertainment district before being shot and killed by police. Diagne drove a black Cadillac SUV and fired into a crowd outside a bar, leaving three dead and nearly twenty others injured. Federal authorities are also examining whether the shooting could have had broader motivations, though the investigation remains ongoing. Only after the March shooting did Brady recognize the man she says assaulted her when his face appeared in national news coverage. Tesla’s Growing List Of Lawsuits Tesla The case adds to a growing list of legal battles involving Tesla’s vehicles and factory operations. This year alone, the automaker has faced a concerning long list of legal squabbles, including a $51 million lawsuit after a worker was reportedly knocked unconscious by a factory robot, another claim alleging that Model S doors may fail to open in emergencies, and a $1 million lawsuit filed by a Tesla Cybertruck owner regarding an alleged Autopilot crash. But there are workplace-specific incidents too, like when an employee claimed 150 pounds of Cybertruck components fell and caused injuries while on the job. Tesla has also faced accusations that it favored foreign visa workers over American employees. Despite these ongoing legal challenges, Elon Musk has continued outlining ambitious long-term plans for the company, even suggesting that Tesla could one day build factories on the Moon.   4. Jeep’s Electric Off-Roader Is Almost HereThe Recon EV is Jeep’s first real shot at an all-electric off-roader, and it’s shaping up to be more than just a concept. Jeep is aiming to keep all the familiar traits – removable doors, real off-road chops, and a look that’s built for adventure – even as it swaps gas for batteries. But what really stands out is how the Recon EV lets Jeep rethink the basics – like where to put a winch. It’s a small detail, but one that matters when you’re deep in the rough stuff. A new patent filing gives us a peek at Jeep’s thinking. Filed in August 2024 (patent no. 20260054533, if you want to dig it up), it describes an EV with a winch tucked inside the front end instead of hanging off the bumper. The diagrams look unmistakably Jeep, right down to the grille. The patent doesn’t name the Recon EV outright, but the timing and the off-road details in the drawings make it pretty clear where this idea could end up. USPTO An Internal Winch for an Electric VehicleNormally, off-road winches get bolted right onto the front bumper. That’s simple and easy to reach, but it’s not perfect. Extra weight up front, worse aerodynamics, and all those moving parts left out in the open for mud and water to find. Instead of hanging the winch outside, the patent’s design hides it inside the front compartment, otherwise known as “frunk,” supported by the chassis rails and sitting just above the EV’s drive components. And, just in case you’re wondering, the cable still feeds out through a small slot in the front fascia, guided along the way so it spools out cleanly. From the outside, you use the winch like normal, but all the hardware stays protected inside. Jeep’s design also calls for mounting the winch to strong structural points, so it can handle real recovery loads. There’s mention of storage and protective covers, too, which should keep the winch isolated from the rest of the front end. USPTO Why It Makes Sense for Electric Off-RoadersPutting the winch inside brings real benefits, especially for an electric off-roader. Aerodynamics matter more than ever with EVs, since every bit of drag cuts into range. Bulky bolt-ons up front just make that worse. Keeping the winch tucked away also means less exposure to water, dust, and trail hits. Plus, you get a cleaner front end – no need for a heavy aftermarket mount sticking out. For the Recon EV, this could be a smart factory option. No more aftermarket hacks – just a winch built in from day one. Of note, Jeep has not confirmed whether this system will appear on the Recon EV or any future models. Patents and trademarks are often filed to protect ideas and engineering concepts, and they are not a guarantee that the technology will reach production vehicles. All this comes at the right time. The Recon EV is nearly ready for production, and Jeep is clearly thinking about how to bring real off-road tools into the electric age. If this hidden winch makes it to showrooms, it could be a sign of how Jeep plans to keep its trail cred – even as it goes electric.   5. Toyota, Hyundai, and several Chinese automakers could feel the effects of the escalating conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran sooner rather than later. Analysts from the investment firm Bernstein warn that the situation could affect everything from regional vehicle sales to global supply chains and fuel prices. On top of that, instability around key shipping routes and oil infrastructure could ripple through the global auto industry, potentially having similar economic repercussions to those of the 1970s oil crisis. Automakers With The Most At Stake Toyota Toyota, Hyundai, and Chinese brands such as Chery have some of the largest exposure to the Middle Eastern market. Bernstein estimates that these companies collectively account for roughly one-third of vehicle sales in the region. Toyota leads with about 17% market share, followed by Hyundai at 10% and Chery at 5%. To put that into perspective, more than 600,000 vehicles were sold across the Middle East last year. Based on those shares, Toyota would account for roughly 204,000 vehicles, Hyundai 120,000, and Chery 60,000 units. Chinese automakers may have an especially tough time, as Iran was responsible for roughly 17% of China’s vehicle exports in 2025, equivalent to about 266,000 vehicles. A prolonged conflict could therefore affect international sales. But China isn't alone. Iran made up about 2% of Toyota's total international sales, which may risk the brand being dethroned as the world’s best-selling automaker. Shipping Routes And Fuel Prices Cole Attisha Much of the concern centers on the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow shipping corridor linking the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman. Around 20 million barrels of crude oil pass through the route every day, according to consulting firm AlixPartners, making it one of the most critical energy chokepoints in the world. Iran’s closure of the Strait threatens global oil supply and prices, and markets have already reacted. Crude oil has climbed 7% since the disruption began, and analysts warn that a prolonged closure could push oil prices above $100 per barrel. Supplies will be rerouted through Africa’s Cape of Good Hope, resulting in up to a 14-day shipping delay. Not only will this cost time, but due to the extra distance travelled, transport costs will increase, too. Alongside higher fuel prices, it seems that rising costs will have a domino effect across the entire auto industry. Fuel Efficiency May Become a Top Priority Toyota If history repeats itself, consumers may begin shifting toward more efficient vehicles, as they did back in the '70s. Hybrid and plug-in hybrid models could see stronger demand, especially as manufacturers expand their electrified offerings. Hyundai, for example, has seen rising interest in its hybrid lineup as fuel efficiency became more important for buyers well before the America-Iran conflict. But this is where things get truly interesting: In light of the rapid decline in EV demand, many brands, like General Motors and Stellantis, have doubled down on ICE-powered vehicles, with rumors of a V8-powered Dodge Charger returning, too. When the Volvo EX30 subcompact electric crossover launched in 2023, it raised quite a few eyebrows due to its minimalist interior that moved almost all controls and driving information to a single 12.3-inch tablet-style central touchscreen. As you can imagine, that wasn’t the best idea. Pretty much every review of the Volvo EX30 has pointed out that the infotainment screen is the crossover’s biggest problem by far. The central screen is known to crash frequently, which is a big problem because many vehicle functions are buried in it, such as the climate control, mirror adjustments, glove box opening, and more. If you want to know how bad the situation is, online automotive guide Edmunds has been running a Volvo EX30 for a while now and their verdict is unforgiving for the Chinese-made Swedish crossover’s digital tech. What Did Go Wrong? The 2025 EX30 owned by the outlet is part of its one-year test fleet, which means that the reviewers have had plenty of time with the EV to be able to offer credible, non-biased feedback. There’s no way to sugarcoat this, so here it is: the EX30 is described as an “absolute tech nightmare,” which may sound excessive until you read the reviewer’s actual experience with the vehicle. According to the article, Volvo has gone too far with the EX30 when it comes to interior austerity. Nearly everything goes through the “slow-reacting touchscreen, and the handful of remaining physical controls are weird,” the author notes, pointing to the switches that open and close the rear windows, which are the same as the fronts, so you need to touch a toggle button first. According to the reviewer, “the tech gets in the way of nearly everything you need to do with the EX30,” even when going to a car wash. Upon taking the EX30 to a car wash, even though “car wash mode” was activated (a six-step operation, by the way) and the transmission was put in Neutral, the car refused to comply as the automatic parking brake had engaged unknowingly, even though car wash mode was on. The trouble is there’s no physical button to engage or disengage the parking brake; to shut it off, the driver needs to tap the brake pedal, but the reviewer learned that through trial and error and the entire car wash had to be shut down until he figured it out. "Overly Sensitive" Driver Monitor Camera Makes Driving a Hassle Volvo Then there’s the Volvo EX30’s safety suite. Turning the driver aids on is easy via a steering wheel button, but if you want to adjust the following distance when active cruise control is on or the lane keeping assistant, you’re forced to use the touchscreen. In doing so, you have to take your eyes off the road, which triggers “the overly sensitive driver monitor camera.” Almost every time the driver needs to look at the touchscreen—and they need to do that a lot since so many basic features are buried in the screen—the driver monitoring system issues an alert, and it does so even when taking a long turn on a winding road because the steering wheel blocks the monitoring camera placed atop the steering column. Is there a solution to all these nagging tech bugs? Edmunds believes that bringing back physical buttons is it, and it looks like some automakers and regulators are coming to the same conclusion. Motor1 reached out to the German marque, which confirmed that the order books closed on February 18. Closing the order books can signal several things, including that the end of production may be approaching. If that’s the case, it reflects the broader market reality for large luxury sedans, with Jaguar and Maserati already ending production of the XJ and Quattroporte, respectively. Lexus is also ending the LS, even releasing a Heritage Edition as a send-off for the model. Audi A Future Still Up in the AirHowever, nothing has been confirmed as of this writing, with A8 spokesperson Marcel Bestle telling the publication that Audi “will communicate further details about a possible successor at a later date.” The use of “possible” suggests it is still unconfirmed whether the current D5 generation — introduced in 2017 — will receive a successor. The model has served as the brand’s full-size luxury sedan since 1994, offering posh in-car features such as a chauffeur-style rear seat with a touchscreen controller integrated into the center armrest. The A8 competes primarily with the BMW 7 Series and Mercedes-Benz S-Class — both of which are still receiving significant updates. For instance, the S-Class has been updated for the 2027 model year, with about 50 percent of its parts new or re-engineered. Audi Sales Paint a Clear PictureIn the U.S., Audi sold just 1,406 A8s in 2025, down 14 percent from the previous year. That figure is also significantly lower than its SUV counterpart, the Q8, which moved 10,881 units. The disparity highlights the growing pressure on the sedan segment, raising questions about how Audi plans to approach the market going forward. Reports suggest a potential successor won't arrive until 2029 — if the company ultimately decides to build one. With the order books now closed in its home market, it could signal that other markets may soon follow. For those still looking to get one while it’s available, the 2026 A8 starts at $95,100, excluding the $1,295 destination charge. The more performance-oriented S8 — starting at $130,000 — is also still available on the U.S. configurator, packing a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 producing 563 horsepower.   11. GM’s Digital Push for Used CarsGeneral Motors announced that its Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) program will be integrated into CarBravo. The move expands the platform’s inventory while allowing GM to offer manufacturer-backed inspections and warranty coverage through participating dealers — bringing the used-car buying process to customers’ fingertips online. This means buyers can browse used vehicles that have been inspected and reconditioned without leaving the comfort of their homes. However, only Chevrolet, Buick, and GMC dealers currently participate in the program, while GM’s luxury brand, Cadillac, continues to operate its own Certified Pre-Owned program. General Motors A Huge Opportunity in Used CarsThe program will compete with online used-car retailers such as Carvana, whose market value surged in late 2025 following strong financial results. The push comes as the used-car market continues to outsize the new-car market. According to Cox Automotive, consumers are expected to purchase about 38 million used vehicles this year, with roughly 20 million sold through retail channels. By comparison, the forecast for new-vehicle sales is about 15.8 million units. GM said most steps in the used-car buying process can be completed online, with customers only needing to visit a dealership for test drives and vehicle delivery. Other automakers have also embraced online car-buying platforms. Hyundai, for example, partners with Amazon Autos to allow customers to shop for vehicles online through participating dealers. Ford offers certified pre-owned vehicles through the platform, which also enables buyers to complete much of the paperwork online, saving time and adding convenience. Chevrolet Two Levels of CoverageAs for the CarBravo program, certified vehicles are classified into two tiers. The first is the Bravo Tier, which includes vehicles up to 10 years old with fewer than 100,000 miles. These models come with a 12-month/12,000-mile bumper-to-bumper limited warranty. Meanwhile, the Budget Tier covers vehicles that are 10 to 15 years old with no more than 150,000 miles. These vehicles come with a 30-day/1,000-mile powertrain limited warranty. GM noted that the coverage may vary by state. Through CarBravo, shoppers can browse vehicles beyond GM’s lineup, effectively making it a one-stop shop. For shoppers specifically interested in GM models, Chevrolet serves as the company’s mass-market brand, offering vehicles such as the Equinox and Silverado. Buick occupies a slightly more premium position, though it sits below Cadillac, while GMC focuses primarily on trucks and SUVs.   12. Export Streak ContinuesA report from the U.S. Department of Commerce shows that BMW was the largest automotive exporter by value in 2025, once again beating homegrown brands like Ford. The German marque exported nearly 200,000 vehicles — out of a total production of 412,799 — last year, reportedly valued at about $9 billion. To be fair, the vehicles produced at BMW’s Spartanburg plant in South Carolina are X models, which are generally more expensive than their sedan counterparts and benefit from the strong global demand for SUVs. The report did not specify which models accounted for the largest share of exports, though high-volume SUVs such as the X3 and X5 likely played a significant role. Still, it is an impressive record for a foreign automaker that has dominated the top spot since 2014. Over that span, the company has exported nearly three million vehicles with a total value of about $113 billion. BMW From X3 to XMThe models produced at the Spartanburg plant are the X3, X5, X6, X7, and XM. The X4, a more stylish version of the X3, was also produced at the facility but was discontinued last year, reportedly to make room for future models, likely including Neue Klasse electric vehicles. The company plans to produce at least six EVs at the South Carolina plant by 2030. About 1,500 vehicles are produced daily, with roughly half shipped to 120 countries. These vehicles are primarily exported through the Port of Charleston, South Carolina, and other East Coast ports. Over 14,000 vehicles are also exported by rail. The Spartanburg plant, which began operations in 1994, currently employs about 11,000 people, highlighting how the facility supports thousands of jobs in the United States. BMW BMW’s American FootprintRobert Engelhorn, president and CEO of BMW Manufacturing in Spartanburg, also highlighted the plant’s contribution to the U.S. economy, saying, “Plant Spartanburg is proud to be the largest automotive exporter by value in the United States, a distinction that underscores our commitment to both the state of South Carolina and the nation’s economic strength.” Aside from exporting vehicles, the Spartanburg plant also helps BMW reduce its exposure to tariffs imposed on imported vehicles, which have made it more difficult for brands without local manufacturing to remain competitive in the U.S. market. A New Mission for a German FactoryVolkswagen is no stranger to the military sector, and the automaker is now exploring the possibility of producing military vehicles at its Osnabrück factory in Germany. According to Reuters, VW recently showcased two military vehicle concepts as it gauges interest from defense buyers that could help keep the plant operating. The Osnabrück factory currently employs about 2,300 people and produces the T-Roc Cabriolet, a convertible subcompact crossover SUV that was never sold in the U.S., likely due to its niche appeal. However, the model is set to end production in 2027, forcing the company to find ways to keep the plant operating — especially after talks to sell the facility to Rheinmetall, a German defense contractor, fell through. Volkswagen Military Concepts Take ShapeThe two military concepts were showcased at the Enforce Tac security and defense trade fair in Germany. One of them is based on the Volkswagen Amarok, a midsize pickup truck underpinned by the same T6.2 platform as the Ford Ranger. Named MV.1, it wears an olive green paint scheme and features several modifications to improve its utilitarian capabilities. Due to the 25-percent tariff on imported light trucks, known as the “Chicken Tax,” among other factors, bringing the Amarok to the U.S. would be challenging. The other military concept — MV.2 — is based on the Volkswagen Crafter, a van larger than the ID. Buzz, making it better suited for transporting personnel. However, neither concept wore VW badges, instead carrying only the D.E.S. Defence script on their sides. Beyond their exterior appearance, they share little with their road-going production counterparts. Volkswagen Volkswagen Searches for a LifelineSpeaking about the exploration into military applications, a spokesperson said, “In recent months, the Volkswagen plant in Osnabrück has developed various vehicle concepts and presented them at Enforce Tac to explore potential market opportunities and prospects.” The spokesperson added that the project's future “remains to be seen.” If this venture materializes, it could also draw attention to Volkswagen’s history of producing military vehicles. One of its most notable military vehicles was the Kübelwagen, essentially the German equivalent of the Willys Jeep. The vehicle was based on the Volkswagen Type 1 architecture, sharing many mechanical components with the now-discontinued Beetle, allowing engineers to create a light utility vehicle without an entirely new design. Despite a 3.3% downturn in U.S. sales last year, Jim Donnelly, President and CEO of Mazda Motor America, Inc., is ever the optimist, convinced the company not only can “crest” the 400,000 mark for the third year in a row but come through with another sales record in 2026. To deliver, he’s betting big on the arrival of the third-generation CX-5 crossover which introduces the Hiroshima-based automaker’s first hybrid drivetrain developed entirely in-house. Related: Mazda CX-5 to Go Full Hybrid With New Skyactiv-Z Engine From the days when it was largely dependent upon the quirky Wankel rotary engine, Mazda has traditionally followed its own path when it’s come to powertrain technology. But the CX-5 shows it falling a bit more in line with the broader industry trend towards electrification. For 2026, it offers conventional and plug-in hybrids in a number of product lines, including the flagship CX-90. And, as Donnelly told Autoblog in an exclusive interview, there will be still more coming in the next “24 to 36-month timeframe.” Follow the Leader“We’ve had an intentional follower mindset when it comes to electrification,” Donelly said during a break from a media drive of the new CX-5. That includes adding all-electric models to its line-up. The automaker’s initial entry, the short-range MX-30 failed to move the needle and was quickly pulled from the U.S. market. A long-range package was expected to debut in 2029 but, according to a January report by the Japanese news service Nikkei, it’s now been pushed back to 2029. Donnelly declined to officially confirm that – but notably didn’t deny the delay, explaining, “Clearly, we’re moving on a pathway towards that, but we feel the powertrains we have are fit for the U.S. market conditions right now.” The brand’s self-described “multi-solution” approach includes its first hybrid system, a twin-motor package developed by Toyota and now used in the CX-50. There’s also the plug-in hybrid package now offered in both the CX-70 and CX-90 models. As for the new SkyActiv-Z hybrid, Donnelly made it clear it won’t be limited to just CX-5. It would surprise few observers if it completely replaces the Toyota system. While both of the electrified packages deliver significant improvements in fuel economy over Mazda’s current gas-only SkyActiv drivetrains, the home-brew system, explained Donnelly, is meant to be “a driver’s hybrid, where you get the benefits of the efficiency improvements, but it's very much the Mazda DNA in terms of the performance.” Related: The Engine That Almost Killed Mazda — and Why It’s Still Alive Today Don’t Count Out the WankelWhat we can bet on is that Mazda isn’t planning to become just another me-too brand when it comes to powertrains. It’s brought back its iconic rotary engine in an extended-range electric vehicle. Currently, this version of the MX-30 EV only is sold in Japan, but it offers hints of what might yet be coming. Mazda “There is work being done on the rotary, overall, and (it’s use as a) range-extender,” said Donnelly. “Rotary is such a part of our heritage…it will be part of our future. But I don’t have anything to announce today.” Perhaps not, but Mazda offered some clues last October at the Japan Mobility Show in the form of the Vision X-Coupe Concept. Not only the latest example of Mazda’s eye-catching Kodo design language, it featured a new range-extended, rotary-powered drivetrain that, the automaker claimed, is capable of capturing CO2 so that it can leave the air cleaner, “the more you drive.” As Autoblog reported from Tokyo, that technology is more than just the typical flight of auto show fancy, Mazda insisted. It is getting ready to put the Mobile Carbon Capture system through a real-world test in a particularly challenging environment, fitted onto a Mazda Spirit Racing car competing in the upcoming the Super Taikyu endurance racing series. Finding an Audience Mazda has had a roller-coaster history when it comes to both sales and profits. It nearly collapsed when early versions of the Wankel proved to have major technical flaws. It survived for years as a vassal of Ford Motor Co. It today has made good use of its close ties to Toyota. Not only does the bigger automaker provide technology and powertrain assistance but the two manufacturers launched the Toyota-Mazda Joint Assembly Plant in Alabama in 2021. It currently rolls out the CX-50, and strong demand has allowed Mazda to keep boosting production. The target is 130,000 this year, said Donnelly, with a goal of eventually boosting that to 150,000, the capacity on the Mazda side of the plant. The automaker is in the midst of a 10-year plan first put in place by global CEO Masahiro Moro when he was running U.S. operations. It’s been paying off State-side. For years, the company struggled to grow much beyond 200,000 annual sales. It fell just short of 280,000 in 2019 and 2020, as COVID hit. But with new offerings, like the CX-50, launched in 2022, followed by the CX-90 and CX-70, demand came out of the pandemic with strong momentum. It surged to a record 424,382, a 16.8% increase, in 2024. Last year saw sales dip 3.3%, to 410,346. A variety of factors led to that slowdown, including the Trump tariffs which led it to adjust production plans for models like the Mexican-made CX-30 crossover and Mazda3. Addressing AffordabilityWhile Donnelly doesn’t call it a shift in “strategy,” he said, “We’ve adjusted our mix and how we want to go to market.” Notably, it moved production of the Mazda3 from Mexico to Japan. Ironically, because of the quirks of the Trump tariff program, that brought down the duties on the subcompact nameplate from 25 to 15%. That’s critical when it comes to targeting entry-level buyers, of course, and Mazda3 is now playing a key role in how the automaker addresses the challenge of affordability. Mazda The average transaction price of a new vehicle topped $50,000, an all-time record, in December, according to Edmunds. That has led to a growing crisis pricing millions of Americans out of the new vehicle market. For its part, the strategy Moro put in place is designed to cover a broader range of the market. While that means drawing in more affluent buyers with products like the CX-70 and CX-90, Mazda wants to provide a refuge for buyers on a budget, as well. There is, said Donnelly, “no question this is an issue. Affordability concerns are very real and providing a limiter on the industry,” which could see a noticeable slump in sales in 2026, Mazda is forecasting. As a result, “We’re focusing more on Mazda3 to really address the affordability issue.” In its sedan form it carries a base price of $24,550. The Mazda3 hatchback starts at $25,550. Several manufacturers have effectively walked away from that market segment, Ford Motor Co., in particular. But the affordability crisis has some brands rethinking that trend, Ford CEO Jim Farley recently saying he would “never say never” to the idea of returning sedans to the line-up. For his part, Donnelly said that’s been obvious to Mazda. “There's an opportunity there. Definitely a market there.” But when asked if that suggests more sedans and hatchbacks might be in the works, he replied, “Not in the near-term.” But longer-term? “There’s clearly a portion of the marketplace that sedans are still the right solution for.” Mazda The Japanese automaker has other ways to address affordability, he noted. As part of a multi-billion-dollar investment in its retail operations, the company has worked with its dealers to boost not only new vehicle sales, but service retention – keeping owners coming back to Mazda service bays after their warranties expire. They also required significant computing power to process the detailed data they produced. At the time, lidar was considered essential for autonomy research but far too expensive for production vehicles. China changed that equation quickly. According to Automotive News, automakers there began installing LiDAR in production EVs and pushed suppliers to scale manufacturing. Companies such as Hesai and RoboSense increased output and drove prices down dramatically. Some compact units now cost roughly $200. Millions of sensors are produced each year. As a result, a growing share of Chinese EVs now feature LiDAR as part of their advanced driver-assistance systems.   17. Jeep has solved the biggest safety problem of the Wrangler and Gladiator, and that is the off-road SUV and truck’s tendency to roll over. Interestingly, the news doesn’t come courtesy of the automaker but the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), which recently crash-tested the 2026 Jeep Wrangler 4-door off-roader. During the driver-side small overlap crash test, the vehicle remained upright, with the independent safety watchdog noting in a statement that this is a sign Jeep has resolved “a longstanding issue with the popular SUV.” Jeep's Fix? Changes to the Frame RailAccording to the organization, the Wrangler’s improved result in the crash test “came after changes were made to the frame rail.” It’s worth pointing out that the automaker made the same modifications to the frame rail on the 2026 Jeep Gladiator. This is a major improvement for the Wrangler and Gladiator after earlier IIHS tests saw the SUV tipping onto its passenger side after striking the barrier. “The frame rail reinforcement acts as a structural enabler to support an enhanced impact strategy for this test mode. It acts as a deflector when the wheel and tire are engaged in this particular crash mode,” a Jeep spokesperson said in a statement to Road & Track. IIHS first identified the rollover issue in a test of the 2019 model, and the problem repeated with the 2022 model despite an earlier round of modifications. The problem resulted in the Wrangler being awarded a marginal small overlap rating. Wrangler and Gladiator Now Get Acceptable Small Overlap Rating IIHS After the most recent test, IIHS has given Wrangler and Gladiator vehicles built after October 2025 an acceptable small overlap rating—driver-side and passenger-side tests combined. Why didn’t the two models earn a higher rating given the significant improvement? Well, while the Wrangler offers solid protection overall, the passenger-side test revealed a high risk of injury to the front passenger’s right foot and leg, IIHS said. The IIHS small overlap test simulates a vehicle’s front corner colliding with another vehicle, tree, or utility pole. The vehicle being tested hits a rigid barrier at 40 mph with 25% of the driver or passenger side front end, making it highly relevant for accidents happening in the real world. Sports utility vehicles with a high center of gravity and short wheelbase like the Jeep Wrangler commonly have a higher rollover risk than most SUVs, but the Wrangler developed a strong reputation for tipping. There’s no full EV in the mix, and none of these models really stretch the boundaries when it comes to tech. Over in China, Buick plays a very different game. The brand still carries significant prestige there, and the company has used that market to experiment with more ambitious products and interior concepts. Case in point: earlier this year, Buick showed off a minivan with a tech-laden, lounge-inspired interior that felt more concept than production. The upcoming E7 SUV is the next step in that direction. Official photos of the E7’s interior show a cabin that’s worlds apart from anything wearing a Buick badge in the US market. Buick A Lounge-Style Cabin Packed with TechStep inside and the E7 leans into Buick’s so-called “Aquatic Aesthetics” design language, borrowing cues from nature to create a bright, open space. The five-seat layout is roomy, and Buick’s floating-layer seats add to the lounge-like vibe. All four main seats come with three-stage heating and ventilation, while the front pair add multi-point massage and full electric adjustment. Rear passengers aren’t left out either, with power backrests that recline up to 125 degrees. Most surfaces are finished in leather, giving the cabin what Buick describes as a 270-degree wraparound feel. The front passenger seat takes things further, acting as a zero-gravity recliner inspired by the Eames lounge chair. Cushion, backrest, and leg support are all electrically adjustable, letting you dial in a near-weightless position with up to 120 degrees of recline. The cabin isn’t fixed, either. It can switch between several setups, from zero-gravity relaxation to a so-called boss mode, and even layouts that turn the interior into a makeshift bed. Rear passengers have access to a 15.6-inch cinema screen, while the sound system packs 20 speakers with Dolby Atmos, including overhead units and a dedicated driver’s headrest speaker. There’s also a rear table, plenty of charging ports, soft ceiling lighting designed to reduce eye strain, and a temperature-controlled storage box that keeps items between 36 and 122 degrees Fahrenheit. On the outside, the E7 borrows cues from Buick’s Momenta concept, including split star-shaped headlights, a shark-inspired front end, and a roof-mounted lidar sensor for advanced driver-assist features. Size-wise, the E7 stretches 191 inches long, 75 inches wide, and 66 inches tall, with a 112-inch wheelbase, which is close to the Buick Envision's. Buick What’s Next for BuickUnder the skin, the E7 runs Buick’s True Dragon Plug-in Hybrid Pro setup, combining a 1.5-liter turbo engine with about 154 horsepower and an electric motor good for 221 horsepower. Buyers can choose between 20.4 or 32.6 kWh battery packs, which translate to an electric-only range of about 66 to 104 miles. Total range is expected to top 994 miles on China’s CLTC cycle. The E7 also gets a continuously variable damping suspension that adapts to changing road surfaces. The E7 is set to make its official debut in China later this March, with no report of the model ever coming to America. Meanwhile, Buick’s near-term plans in the US remain more conventional. Instead of introducing a new EV right away, the brand is preparing to shift production of the Envision to America. The sedan, known internally as NA0, is reportedly set to start production around July 2026 and will remain in production until about 2035. Production is expected to kick off with a non-US i3 50 xDrive, with North American versions and more trims following later. The rumored lineup covers everything from the i3 20 and i3 40 to the i3 50 and a hot i3 M60 xDrive. That last one could debut around 2027, bringing upgrades like adaptive M suspension, larger brakes, and sportier wheels. There’s also talk of an i3 Touring wagon, coded NA1, which could start production in July 2027 and eventually match the sedan’s range of variants. The catch? It might not make it to North America, at least not yet. Production is expected to start in Germany, with the possibility of BMW’s Mexico plant joining in about a year later. But a patent quietly published recently, discovered by a patent analyst on X, suggests things might actually be moving. And what it describes is genuinely unlike anything Tesla, or really anyone, has put in a production car before. The frame is divided into up to six distinct stiffness zones, each tuned differently for ergonomics and structural support. Rather than a mechanical recliner, a built-in flexible hinge made from fiber composite material handles movement. Four pairs of actuators give the seat six degrees of freedom, and an ECU manages all of it through software, meaning the seat is essentially programmable. Ventilation channels are molded directly in. Airbag deployment paths are shaped into the bolsters. Even the soft trim attaches without separate hardware. All this goes to say that Tesla’s given this seat more thought than just bolting in a plastic poolside chair, a thought we're sure has entered the minds of many reading this.
