  2. Despite the popularity of Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 crossover and Ioniq 9 three-row SUV in the United States, not all Ioniq-badged EVs are doing great here. Yes, we’re looking at you, Ioniq 6 sedan. The quirky Tesla Model 3 rival has failed to convince U.S. buyers, and that is the main reason why Hyundai has decided to retire it from the market, only three years after its debut. Edmunds learned that the facelifted 2026 Ioniq 6 is not coming stateside, though with a big exception: the Ioniq 6 N performance version will be available, albeit “in limited quantities.” "Going forward, our award-winning Ioniq 6 lineup will consist of the all-new Ioniq 6 N," a Hyundai spokesperson told the publication, adding that the 2026 Ioniq 6 N will arrive later this year in the U.S. Until then, buyers can still get a 2025 Ioniq 6 sedan, as there are plenty of those left in dealer inventories. Prices start from just under $40,000, including destination. Tariffs Likely Killed the Standard Ioniq 6 in the U.S. Hyundai While Hyundai USA didn’t provide a reason for the decision to axe the standard Ioniq 6, tariffs are the most logical explanation. Unlike the Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 9, which are built in the U.S. at the automaker’s plant near Savannah, Georgia, the Ioniq 6 is manufactured in South Korea. In January, U.S. President Donald Trump threatened South Korea with a tariff increase from 15% to 25%. Needless to say, Hyundai would have to pass that significant cost on to consumers, and that would make the standard Ioniq 6 far too expensive for its own good. In the case of the more expensive Ioniq 6 N, though, which is also made in Korea, the tariff-related cost is probably easier to swallow by consumers. It’s worth pointing out that Hyundai will continue to sell the facelifted Ioniq 6 in Canada, as our northern neighbor doesn’t impose any tariffs to Korean-made cars under the Canada–Korea Free Trade Agreement (CKFTA). Tariffs aside, the standard Ioniq 6 likely also owes its demise in the U.S. to the loss of federal tax credits and declining sales. While Tesla sold around 190,000 Model 3 sedans in the U.S. last year, Hyundai sold just over 10,400 Ioniq 6 sedans, down from 13,000 units in 2023, its debut year. What Are We Missing Out On? Hyundai The 2026 Hyundai Ioniq 6 brings a series of exterior, interior and performance upgrades. The styling is the most obvious as the electric sedan gains thinner LED headlights and a restyled bumper at the front, as well as new rear lighting and an extended, more subtle ducktail spoiler that helps improve aerodynamics. A new performance-themed N Line trim is also introduced for 2026. Inside, the 2026 Ioniq 6 adopts a redesigned three-spoke steering wheel and a more user-friendly climate control layout. New additions also include the new Connected Car Navigation Cockpit (ccNC) system with dual 12.3-inch displays, standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as improved over-the-air (OTA) update capabilities. Hyundai is also giving the 2026 Ioniq 6 an upgraded battery pack for the Long Range model with an increased capacity of 84 kWh (the same battery that powers the go-faster Ioniq 6 N). Speaking of the Ioniq 6 N (pictured below), it gets all of the above updates plus an exclusive dual-motor AWD powertrain that delivers up to 641 horsepower in “N Grin Boost” mode, enabling a 0-60 mph time of around 3.2 seconds. Other exclusive features include the upgraded sports suspension, larger brakes, simulated shift modes, and aggressive styling. The 2026 Ioniq 6 N is expected to start around $70,000 when it goes on sale in the United States. Hyundai View the full article
  3. The Opposite of Simplify and Add LightnessLotus: The purveyor of lightweight sports cars and roadsters that offer a distilled driving experience. It's an automaker that prides itself on shedding every ounce possible to give the ultimate in driving engagement. Sadly, that's not the case anymore. Today, Lotus has the Emeya electric four-door GT that weighs more than an Audi RS 7, and, of all things, a battery-powered crossover in the form of the Eletre. Neither of those cars follows Lotus founder Colin Chapman's ethos of 'simplify and add lightness,' as both weigh well over 5,000 lbs. Chapman must be rolling in his grave like a twin-cam engine. Lotus Another Heavy Lotus RevealedOver in China, Eletre has added a new model to its lineup that aims to expand the crossover's appeal. Lotus has added a plug-in hybrid version to quell any fears of range anxiety, and it produces more power than the pure-electric model. The hybrid Eletre doesn't carry that name, though, at least in China. Over there, it's called the For Me, although it's likely global models will retain the Eletre nameplate. So, what's it packing? It uses a 2.0-liter turbo engine mated to a pair of synchronous motors. It then gets a 70 kWh battery pack, which is sizable for a plug-in hybrid vehicle. The combined output is rated at 939 horsepower, which is more than the Eletre R's 892 hp. 0 to 60 mph is dispatched in under 3.5 seconds, and Lotus claims a maximum range of 880 miles from a full battery and full tank. Lotus Tipping the ScalesNow, for the question of weight. According to Lotus, it weighs between 5,677 lbs and 5,787 lbs, depending on the trim chosen. The Eletre plug-in hybrid's main competitors are the Lamborghini Urus SE and the BMW XM, so it's a good time to compare their respective masses. For the Urus SE, it tips the scales at 5,520 lbs, a fair bit lighter than the Lotus, which is a phrase we'd thought we'd never say. As for the XM, that one weighs in at staggering 6,062 lbs, so at least the Lotus can claim it's 'light' for a plug-in hybrid performance crossover. Still, it's rather amusing that we now live in a world where a Lotus weighs about the same as a four-wheel drive Chevrolet Tahoe. For those curious, a Tahoe LS 4WD weighs 5,661 lbs, while an LT 4WD weighs 5,743 lbs. Lotus View the full article
  4. Tesla’s Futuristic Door Handles Are Back in CourtTesla’s ongoing legal headaches surrounding its unconventional door designs aren’t going away anytime soon. Reports about trapped occupants and controversial electronic door systems have circulated for years, and another lawsuit is now adding fuel to that fire. A new class action lawsuit filed in California federal court alleges that the 2023-present Tesla Model S contains a critical safety defect involving its electrically actuated door handles. Plaintiff Robert L. Hyde claims the car becomes “not reasonably escapable” if a crash or fire causes the vehicle’s low-voltage system to fail. Because both the interior and exterior handles rely on electronic latch actuation, a power loss could prevent the flush exterior handles from extending, making it difficult for first responders to access the cabin. Hyde argues that the manual backup release for the rear doors, hidden beneath carpeting under the rear seats, is not realistically discoverable during the chaos of a crash. The Safety Debate Around Electronic Door Handles Is GrowingConcerns about electronic door releases and flush handles aren’t limited to one lawsuit. In fact, the issue has begun attracting regulatory attention overseas. Authorities in China, currently the world’s largest EV market, have reportedly pushed back against flush door designs due to safety risks posed by electronic systems failing during collisions. Those concerns are amplified by a growing list of alleged real-world incidents. Multiple reports have surfaced in recent years of occupants unable to exit Teslas during emergencies due to malfunctioning door handles or unfamiliar manual overrides. Some accounts involve parents claiming their children were trapped inside vehicles when the electronic handles failed. An early report referenced by investigators even suggested that at least 15 fatalities may have been linked to Tesla vehicles where doors reportedly failed to open during fires, claims that remain heavily debated but continue to circulate among regulators and safety advocates. The LowdownTesla’s approach to vehicle design has always prioritized minimalism and technological flair. The flush handles on the Model S were once a futuristic party trick that helped the sedan stand out in a crowded luxury segment. But the current lawsuit highlights a tension that car engineers know well: every step toward digital convenience introduces another potential failure point. Door latches are among the oldest and most safety-critical components in any vehicle. If the allegations in this lawsuit gain traction, Tesla may once again be forced to reconsider whether its sleek, software-driven solutions have pushed past the line where innovation begins to conflict with basic survivability in worst-case scenarios. 5. Waymo’s Expansion Hits Another ControversyAutonomous taxis have been one of the most polarizing developments in the automotive world, and Waymo sits right at the center of the debate. The Alphabet-owned company has been rapidly expanding its robotaxi service across major U.S. cities, with plans to bring the technology to even more markets as it pushes the idea that your second car might eventually be replaced by an app summon. But just as the technology continues its rollout, a troubling new safety concern has surfaced, prompting regulators to pay close attention. According to a new report from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), investigators are examining an incident in Austin, Texas, where a Waymo driverless taxi allegedly passed a stopped school bus with its lights activated, an action that violates Texas traffic laws. Reuters reports that the January 12 incident occurred while the bus was actively loading students. Officials say another similar event may have happened just two days later involving a special-needs school bus. The issue comes after Waymo recalled its autonomous vehicles in December following reports that its robotaxis had illegally passed stopped school buses at least 19 times since the school year began. In the most recent case, the vehicle initially stopped but then moved forward after a remote support operator reportedly indicated the bus did not have active signals. Waymo Previous Incidents Raise Questions About the SystemThis isn’t the first time Waymo has faced scrutiny involving school zones. Earlier this year, federal regulators began investigating an incident where a Waymo autonomous taxi struck a nine-year-old girl in a Santa Monica school zone. According to the company, the vehicle detected the child, who ran out from behind a double-parked SUV, and aggressively applied the brakes, slowing from around 17 mph to under 6 mph before making contact. Another detail that has raised eyebrows among critics is how Waymo’s vehicles sometimes rely on remote human assistance when they encounter unusual traffic scenarios. While the cars drive themselves most of the time, support operators can step in to help the vehicle interpret tricky situations. Reports indicate that many of these remote support workers are based overseas, including in the Philippines, where they assist with vehicles in real time. In the January school bus incident, the NTSB said the car contacted a remote operator to confirm whether the bus had active warning signals before proceeding. Source: Waymo The Lowdown on Autonomous DrivingWaymo’s robotaxi program has long divided public opinion. Some see it as the future of urban mobility, promising fewer crashes and more efficient transportation. Others remain skeptical about whether software can reliably handle the unpredictable chaos of real-world driving, especially in situations involving children, school buses, and busy urban streets. These incidents highlight a familiar truth about automotive technology: Perfection on paper rarely survives contact with reality. Autonomous systems may be packed with sensors, cameras, and machine learning algorithms, but the road is full of edge cases that are difficult to anticipate. Between pranksters exploiting robotaxi quirks and regulators probing safety incidents, Waymo’s journey toward widespread adoption still faces plenty of bumps. Until autonomous driving proves it can handle every scenario flawlessly, many enthusiasts will likely keep trusting their own right foot and steering wheel instead of a line of code. 6. Scout's Birthing PainsScout hasn't sold a single vehicle yet, but it's already faced several legal issues. It's mainly because of the brand's plan to take the direct sales route, and dealers aren't happy. Since Scout is under the Volkswagen Auto Group, dealer groups say sales have to be routed through them, as it is part of VW. There have been suits in Colorado, Florida, and South Carolina, repeatedly filing cases against Volkswagen of America. That's on top of the other financial and legal obligations the company has. To say Scout isn't having an easy birth is a relative understatement. Scout More Dealers File CasesA dealer group in Virginia has also filed a lawsuit alleging that Volkswagen is violating standard dealer agreements. It then adds that Scout Motors is 'aiding and abetting' the bypass by going for direct sales. Cases have also been filed in New York and Connecticut against both VW and Scout Motors. One law firm representing the New York VW said, "They can't really seek refuge in this, what we call a shell game, by claiming that Scout is independent of Volkswagen. We feel we have a viable legal case to get an injunction and also damages for the lost business opportunities to the franchise dealers across the country." Scout Motors But Tesla and Rivian Have Direct Sales, Right?Well, yes, but not all states allow it. Wind back the clock a few years, and we go to Tesla's direct sales model, which faced similar legal hurdles as Scout Motors at the time. That said, Tesla, Rivian, and Lucid never had established franchise networks, which somewhat eased their burden. Mind you, it was still an uphill battle to get it done, but it was a win for them nonetheless. However, Scout's case is different. Volkswagen owns the Scout brand, and the German automaker already has a well-established network of franchises across the U.S. The dealer groups argue that they have been losing business due to deposits and reservations. Plaintiffs have repeatedly mentioned that allowing direct sales sets a dangerous precedent. One law firm told Automotive News, "It's Volkswagen today, and all manufacturers watch each other. So if manufacturers saw that dealers didn't stand up together, push back and assert their rights, it allows the other manufacturers to say, 'Hey look, Volkswagen was able to do it, so we can do it with impunity.' It's not just a case that's important for VW dealers, but it's equally important for dealers of all line makes." Scout Motors Scout Motors isn't BudgingDespite the suits filed against it, Scout is determined to employ its direct sales method one way or another. "If you look at 21st-century brands and what they’re able to deliver, that’s what they do. We can create the stores, and we can create the brand experience," said Scout Motors CEO Scott Keogh. While several states are challenging the direct sales model, Scout can firmly plant its flag in Colorado. The state has granted the company its own dealer license to allow them to sell vehicles with no middleman. That said, the approval is more of a symbolic move as the license expires in October 2026, and the company will only start selling cars in 2027. Still, it sets a precedent and allows Scout to put its foot in the door for its sales method. Scout Motors View the full article
  7. Ford Motor Company reported its February 2026 U.S. sales this week, with the company reporting an overall decline of 5.5% relative to February 2025. Including Lincoln, Ford sold 149,962 vehicles in February, down from 158,675 a year ago. The disappearance of models like the Ford Edge crossover and F-150 Lightning electric pickup truck didn’t help Ford’s cause, but the manufacturer did see a significant increase in demand for its large SUVs. In fact, Ford models in this category registered their best February sales in 26 years. Large Ford SUVs Thrive Ford While Ford’s smaller SUVs struggled last month, the same can’t be said of the larger Expedition and Explorer. Here’s a look at Ford’s SUV sales for February 2026. The only smaller Ford SUV that had a strong February was the Bronco Sport. Following the Edge, the Ford Escape also went out of production late last year, which clearly impacted February’s sales figures. The Expedition and Explorer had a great February, with the Explorer being the fastest-growing Ford SUV when compared to last year. In 2025, the Explorer was the best-selling three-row SUV in the country, and buyers still can’t get enough of its powerful V6 and bold looks. The F-Series managed 49,160 sales last month, down by 13.92%, but this was still Ford’s best-selling model line by far. Ford Has Abandoned The Budget Segment—But That Will Change Ford Over the last few years, Ford has discontinued nearly all its cheapest models. These include the Fiesta, EcoSport, Edge, and Escape. The brand hasn’t had a small sedan or hatchback on sale for years, leaving buyers with nothing but the Maverick if they want a new Ford at under $30,000. While the success of its large SUVs and trucks is expected to continue, Ford is missing out on a crucial segment of the market, where brands like Toyota, Kia, and Honda are thriving. Ford dealers said recently they want a sedan and crossover at under $30,000, so it’s just as well that Ford is planning five new affordable models by 2030. This group of cheap Fords will include a midsize electric pickup, more efficient hybrids, and a possible new sedan. They’ll answer the need for simpler, cheaper new cars at a time when average car prices are regularly exceeding $50,000. This shift in strategy can also rekindle Ford’s image as a true people’s brand. Related: Ford Updates Plans: 5 New Affordable Vehicles by 2030 View the full article
  8. The second car built on the innovative Neue Klasse architecture has been teased, and BMW has confirmed that the new i3, or electric 3 Series, will debut on March 18. In a post shared to Instagram, the German automaker has confirmed that the new i3 will have an illuminated front-end, with LEDs framing the face of the electric sedan. While the first Neue Klasse product, the BMW iX3, has narrow, vertically-aligned 'kidneys', the i3 will have horizontal kidneys between its headlights, helping set the sedan apart from its similarly underpinned crossover. But as BMW's contemporary cars show, looks matter little. What can we expect under the skin? 2027 BMW i3: Loads of Range and Plenty of Power To begin with, the new i3 range is expected to be offered in 50 xDrive flavor, mirroring the iX3. Although yet to be confirmed, we assume that the same dual-motor setup will carry over to the sedan, offering 464 horsepower and 479 lb-ft. We also expect the iX3's 108kWh nickel manganese-cobalt battery to carry over, though the sedan's lower stance and more aerodynamic shape are expected to contribute to greater range (the iX3's 800-volt architecture delivers 500 miles from a single charge and enables charging speeds of up to 400kW). These figures will be closely matched by the first electric Mercedes-Benz C-Class, which has already been teased. BMW/Instagram Later down the line, lesser i3 trims will be offered, as will a range-topping electric M3 with as much as 800 hp. BMW has already begun manufacturing pre-production models at its plant in Munich in preparation for full production in the second half of 2026, so the i3 should go on sale here before the end of 2026. When it arrives, buyers will have plenty of choices. Several BMW i3 Options Have Already LeakedRelated: BMW, Hyundai, and Nissan Top the 2026 World Car Awards According to a reliable insider on the BimmerPost forum, both the i3 and its 3 Series gas-powered sibling will have several color options, though the latter will have more. The i3 is reportedly going to be offered in Alpine White, Black Sapphire, Brooklyn Grey, Space Silver, and Le Castellet Blue, while the gas 3er will get the same choice plus Mineral White, Fire/Vegas Red, Polarized Grey, Ocean Wave Blue, and Eucalyptus Green. Inside, buyers will reportedly be able to choose from grey, green, white, and black themes. Expect the combustion 3 Series to arrive shortly after the i3, likely in the summer. Elsewhere, a leak on the BMW USA online shop revealed that the German automaker will reveal a mild-hybrid M350, a new iX4 crossover, the new X5, and a revised 7 Series. All of these are expected to hit dealer floors by the end of the year, along with an all-wheel-drive M2. SH Proshots/Autoblog View the full article
  9. Can a gas-powered Charger Hellcat muscle car coexist with a 900-hp Charger Banshee EV in Dodge's lineup? Recent reports and remarks from Dodge's CEO seem to suggest they can, even though both of these models were written off entirely not that long ago. We recently learned from a new report that the glorious Hellcat V8 may eventually find its way into the engine bay of the eighth-generation Charger, as Dodge has apparently green-lighted the Charger Hellcat for the 2028 model year. While the insider information hasn't been confirmed yet by Dodge, previous comments from top-level Stellantis executives point in that direction. Don't Dismiss the Banshee Before Dodge Does Dodge While welcoming the Hellcat V8 back into Charger does make sense in the current market environment where EVs are losing ground to ICEs in the U.S.—especially when it comes to enthusiast cars—one thing we didn't expect is Dodge giving the Charger Daytona SRT Banshee electric muscle car a second chance—well, technically, a first chance as it was shelved before even reaching showrooms. You may remember that the Charger Daytona SRT Banshee halo car, which was supposed to become the all-electric successor to the Hellcat, was reportedly canceled before reaching production, mirroring the fate of the Ram 1500 REV all-electric truck. But in a recent interview with Canada's Driving, Dodge CEO Matt McAlear suggested that the fate of the Charger Daytona SRT Banshee is not yet sealed. "Banshee is never completely dead. I mean, SRT has never… we'll see. I mean, everything is, uh, is all about timing," the executive noted. That's an interesting statement and it may hint at Dodge waiting for better market conditions to launch the flagship Banshee. Or maybe not; maybe what Dodge is waiting for is to have both the supercharged Hellcat V8-powered Charger in the lineup and the Charger Daytona SRT Banshee as its all-electric sidekick. According to McAlear, "one of the best things for the EV's powertrain will be having the [gas-fueled Hurricane] sitting right next to it on the showroom floor… the ability to compare and to test-drive both back-to-back, I think will be unique versus some of the other competitors." Former Stellantis CEO's Departure Gave Dodge More Powertrain Flexibility Dodge The executive also said that the brand did not make "any changes to the plan" after the departure of former Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares. "The only thing we've changed is the mix from a production standpoint," McAlear said, referring to the addition of the Hurricane six-cylinder gas engine to the Charger lineup and the axing of the 496-hp Charger Daytona R/T entry-level EV variant. Currently, the only all-electric Charger on sale is the 670-hp Daytona Scat Pack and Scat Pack Plus. The 900-hp tri-motor Banshee, with its 800-volt architecture, would be a big step up both from the 400-volt, dual-motor Charger Daytona Scat Pack and the rumored 777-hp Charger Hellcat. Speaking of Tavares, Dodge's CEO noted that his departure "allowed us to be more flexible and to get back to offering multiple powertrains," and that the powertrain lineup available today in the Charger "was always the plan from the beginning." Here's hoping that a Charger Hellcat is also part of that plan; and even if it's not, we wouldn't mind seeing it happen as an afterthought. View the full article
  10. Honda reported its U.S. February sales results this week, with the brand posting a modest 0.6% year-to-date increase over 2025, excluding Acura. The company sold 97,226 vehicles in February and has accumulated 186,801 sales for the year so far. Models like the CR-V, Civic, and Accord continued to lead the way for Honda, while on the other side of the spectrum, the still-fresh Prelude coupe moved just 299 units in February. While that represents a fraction of Honda’s total sales, the Prelude is actually on track to meet its annual sales target. It’s also keeping pace with one of its closest—and much cheaper—Japanese rivals. Related: 2026 Honda Prelude First Drive Review: The Ideal Entry Point into Car Enthusiast Culture Honda Prelude and Subaru BRZ Tied in 2026 Sales 2026 Honda Prelude Honda View the 2 images of this gallery on the original article Across the first two months of the year, the Prelude and BRZ each tallied sales of 515 models. In February, the Prelude actually outsold the BRZ by 22 units. For all the complaints about the Prelude’s high starting price ($42,000) and so-so performance (200 horsepower), it’s still keeping pace with one of the only other two-door compact sports coupes. The BRZ starts at a much more attainable $35,860, makes a stronger 228 hp, and comes with a manual gearbox. It’s a purer sports car, but it’s also not as premium-feeling or well-equipped as the newer Prelude. Honda said it aims to sell just 4,000 Preludes annually, which works out to roughly 333 units per month. It nearly got there in February, despite that being a generally slow month for car sales. Harsh weather and tighter budgets after the year-end holiday season often impact car sales early in a new year. All things considered, the Prelude looks set to meet Honda’s modest sales target. Other Honda Sales Highlights Honda CR-V TrailSport Honda View the 3 images of this gallery on the original article Elsewhere in Honda’s lineup, the CR-V continued to be the brand’s biggest seller, with 31,625 sales in February. It was followed by the Civic (18,225), Accord (10,966), Pilot (10,460), and HR-V (9,983). The automaker achieved an all-time February sales record for hybrids, with 30,671 sold. This includes the Civic, Accord, CR-V, and Prelude hybrids. Passenger car sales were up by 8.9%, while the new Passport continued a great run, with 4,746 units sold. That’s a 35.7% increase over February 2025, making the Passport Honda’s fastest-growing model last month. It was also the Passport’s best-ever February, and the TrailSport trims are still accounting for over 80% of the model mix. Major supply issues hit Honda hard in 2025, but it’s been a promising start to the year for the Japanese marque. Hybrid sales are up, but the decision to boost production of cheaper non-hybrid models is also reaping rewards early this year. Finally, the Prelude is close to delivering on Honda's targets. A hybrid without a manual may not thrill fans of the older Preludes, but the new one is a stylish, premium coupe that has successfully transitioned the nameplate into the modern era. 11. The first-generation Honda Insight was a two-door, two-seat hybrid liftback, and its second was a four-door liftback with space for five. In its third generation, it turned into a four-door sedan, and now Honda's Insight has changed again, with the 2027 Insight revealed as a four-door crossover that's now all-electric. Another big change is that, while America has had access to previous models, the new model is only available in Japan, though other global markets are likely to get access eventually. The U.S. probably never will because, although Honda hasn't said so, the 2027 Insight appears to be based on China's Dongfeng Honda-produced e:NS2. 2027 Honda Insight Performance Honda View the 4 images of this gallery on the original article Honda hasn't revealed everything there is to know about the Insight just yet, but it did say that the single front-mounted motor produces 229 lb-ft of torque, which matches the figure of the e:NS2. Assuming nothing has changed, that means 201 horsepower. While those figures are relatively low for an EV, Honda claims the vehicle is light and promises "exciting, nimble handling." Honda has also confirmed a driving range of 311 miles on the WLTC cycle, which is more forgiving than the EPA's test procedures. Interestingly, China's e:NS2 gets 339 miles (on the CLTC cycle) from its 68.8kWh battery pack. 12. Ram’s practical ProMaster van is under investigation for a loss of power steering assistance. According to information from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 19 complaints have been received for intermittent or total failure of the power steering system in certain examples of the van. Considering the sheer size and weight of these vans—especially when fully loaded—a sudden loss of power steering assistance could be a major hazard. The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has opened a preliminary evaluation to find the root cause and assess the scope of the problem. What Ram ProMaster Models Are Affected? Stellantis Affected models are from the 2022 and 2023 model years, and include all variants of the Ram ProMaster: 1500, 2500, and 3500. Those numbers represent the light-, medium-, and heavy-duty derivatives of the ProMaster, with the 3500 offering the best payload capacity of the three. Overall, the estimated population of affected vans is 136,666. The ProMaster EV is not mentioned in the investigation. According to the complaints, the increase in steering effort can lead to a loss of vehicle control, which is a scary prospect in a vehicle that can weigh over 5,000 lbs. When fully loaded with cargo or passengers, these vans have a maximum Gross Vehicle Weight Rating of over 9,000 lbs. Several reports indicate that water intrusion into the electric connectors of the electric power steering control module could be to blame. Stellantis One ProMaster driver from Connecticut said a corrosion of the wire harness due to water entering the power steering rack caused his power steering to fail. “Driving on highway and power steering gave out without warning. Had to pull to the side of the road. Safety at risk,” said the driver. Another customer reported waiting for 56 days for a part to replace their steering, due to the number of other ProMaster drivers needing the same part. Interestingly, there's another open investigation for a loss of power steering on a Ram. This older investigation affects 2013-2016 Ram 1500 pickups, but it's not known if that issue is linked to the ProMaster's problem in any way. Related: Massive Ram ProMaster Recall For Fire Risk Could Impact Fleets Nationwide What Owners Should Do Now Stellantis While recalls or Do Not Drive alerts have not been issued for the steering issue, it’s possible that the investigation will end with one or the other. In the meantime, anyone driving a 2022 or 2023 Ram ProMaster should exercise caution. If a detected loss of power steering occurs, especially at high speeds, it’s advisable to slow down and pull the vehicle over. Drivers should also look out for the following warning lights/messages on the dashboard, which accompany a loss of power steering assistance in some cases: ECS needs serviceHill assist needs serviceEngine needs serviceFWC system needs serviceThe ProMaster should be immediately checked by a technician if any of these warning messages appear. There’s no timeline on exactly when the investigation will be completed, but ProMaster owners are advised to check the NHTSA site regularly for any further updates. 13. A Treacherous Commute AheadThe Western United States is bracing for a severe weather shift as a powerful Pacific storm system pushes inland. With Winter Storm Warnings now active across multiple states, drivers navigating high elevation routes are facing a formidable combination of heavy snow and high winds. Forecasts indicate that up to 20 inches of snow could bury key mountain passes, making travel over the next few days exceedingly dangerous, if not entirely impossible. High Winds and Whiteout ConditionsBeyond the sheer volume of snow, the accompanying wind is what will truly test motorists. Gusts reaching 40 to 50 mph are expected to sweep across the Great Basin and the Intermountain West. For high-profile vehicles and drivers on exposed highways, these severe crosswinds pose a significant hazard. The combination of falling snow and gale-force winds will inevitably lead to sudden whiteout conditions in the mountains, reducing visibility to zero in a matter of seconds. Impact on Mountain Passes and InfrastructureThe Cascades, the Wasatch Back, and the Nevada mountain ranges are in the direct path of this system. Major arteries traversing these regions will likely see chain controls implemented rapidly, and outright highway closures are highly probable as road crews struggle to keep up with accumulation rates. Motorists planning to cross the Rockies or navigate the Greater Lake Tahoe area must prepare for extensive delays. The rapidly dropping temperatures will also flash freeze wet roads, creating layers of black ice beneath the fresh powder. Preparation and Alternative RoutesFor those who must travel, ensuring your vehicle is equipped for extreme winter duty is paramount. Winter tires with severe snow service ratings, a dedicated emergency kit, and a full tank of gas are essential for tackling these conditions. However, the safest course of action is to reevaluate travel plans and seek alternative routes that avoid the highest elevations entirely until the storm passes and road-clearing operations are complete. 14. The National Hot Rod Association has a straightforward rule for street-legal production cars running at sanctioned drag events without roll cages or competition licenses. Go no quicker than 9.0 seconds in the quarter mile and no faster than 150 mph through the traps. It’s a relatively sensible threshold designed to keep ordinary drivers in non-caged cars from getting themselves into too much trouble. The 2026 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1X, which starts at $212,195 and can be bought at a Chevy dealership, does not care about sensible thresholds. Chevrolet A Machine Built to Break Records, And RulesThe ZR1X combines the ZR1's twin-turbocharged 5.5-liter LT7 V8 with an upgraded front electric motor lifted from the Corvette E-Ray platform. The combustion engine contributes 1,064 horsepower while the front electric motor adds another 186 horsepower, bringing the total to 1,250 horsepower in an all-wheel-drive layout that tips the scales at 4,139 pounds. On a prepped surface at US 131 Motorsports Park in Michigan, Chevrolet's own test produced a quarter-mile time of 8.675 seconds at 159.57 mph, with the car reaching 60 mph in just 1.68 seconds while generating a peak of 1.75g of acceleration force. Those are numbers that belong on a purpose-built race car, not something with a factory warranty. Where the Rulebook Falls ApartThe NHRA's Street Legal program's 9.0-second and 150 mph limits exist for a reason. At those speeds, without a roll cage protecting the occupant, a crash becomes extremely difficult to survive. The rules were never written with a car like the ZR1X in mind, because a car like the ZR1X was not supposed to exist at a dealership. Even on road tires on an unprepared track, Car and Driver recorded 9.2 seconds at 155 mph, a pass that still violates speed thresholds, and raises the point of what a prepped track and competition tires will lead to. Chevrolet The Paradox of a Street Car That Outgrew the StripWhat makes this situation genuinely strange is that the ZR1X is not a stripped-out track weapon. It runs on pump gas, it has a trunk, and it is 50-state street legal. The engineering team even had to modify the front motor's software cutoff point, raising it from 150 mph to 160 mph, just so the all-wheel-drive system would remain engaged through the entire length of a quarter-mile run. General Motors did not stumble into this territory accidentally. The ZR1X was designed from the outset to be the fastest production vehicle the company had ever built, and it achieved that goal so thoroughly that the sport which celebrates straight-line speed now has no legal category to put it in. The NHRA will almost certainly adapt its regulations to accommodate a car of this profile. Until then, the quickest Corvette ever built sits in an uncomfortable grey area. View the full article
  15. Subaru has announced its first foray into the hands-free driving era. The first model to benefit is the Outback, which recently entered a new generation. The automaker’s EyeSight driver-assistance suite has already been available across Subaru’s lineup, but the Outback’s new Hands-Free Assist Driving system is far more advanced. As with other hands-free systems like Ford’s BlueCruise, Subaru’s system supports hands-free driving on most interstate highways. It can be used at speeds of up to 85 mph (5 mph higher than BlueCruise), which exceeds the speed limit in most states across the country. Related: Hands-Free Driving Is Surging — Even After High-Profile Crashes How Highway Hands-Free Assist Works S Subaru’s system uses a combination of GPS, HD maps, radar sensors, and cameras for its hands-free system. The automaker says it has been refined through 100,000 miles of testing, ensuring the system’s accuracy. Hands-free operation can be engaged once the adaptive cruise control system is active. Still a Level 2 system, this means the driver needs to pay attention to the road at all times, which is monitored by the Subaru DriverFocus Distraction Mitigation system. If this notices a distracted driver, the hands-free system will disengage and the driver will be prompted to resume manual control. A wider-angle, higher-resolution camera and infrared LEDs can detect a driver’s eye gaze, even through sunglasses. S Active lane change assist, automatic resume assist, and pre-curve speed control on highways also form part of the highway system’s capabilities. Emergency stop assist and safe lane selection are also offered, while easily identifiable green and blue icons in the digital gauge cluster communicate the status of the system. The new Highway Hands-Free Assist system is available as a no-cost update on the Touring and Touring XT trims for the 2026 Outback. Any models sold after January 19, 2026, will already have the update installed. Related: 2026 Subaru Outback Debuts With New Tech, New Look, and Higher Prices What It Means S Subaru, a brand better known for its Symmetrical all-wheel-drive system and rugged dependability, has finally entered the hands-free race. It joins Ford’s BlueCruise, GM’s Super Cruise, and Mercedes-Benz’s Drive Pilot system. Tesla, of course, is a prominent presence in this arena, as its Full Self-Driving (Supervised) suite can handle point-to-point hands-free driving, even through urban areas. You’ll need to pay for Subaru’s system, though, as the cheapest model it’s offered on is the Outback Touring at $45,395. We expect the capability to eventually make its way into other Subaru models. Moreover, we hope to see more Subarus transition to the Outback’s redesigned user interface, as the Forester Wilderness we drove alienated us with some of its controls. The new functionality broadens Subaru’s appeal—as more models receive the hands-free system and the Outback’s latest user interface, it can grow into a brand that can compete in tech and not just rugged capability. 16. The Chevrolet Corvette has always been one of America’s most iconic sports cars, but many enthusiasts believe the current C8 generation has already crossed the line to full-blown supercar. Digital designer Khyzyl Saleem, better known online as the_kyza, wondered what would happen if that evolution continued. His digital concept, called the C8-X, takes inspiration from the CX and CX.R Gran Turismo concepts to conceive the wildest Corvette yet. While no prototype details have been shared, we assume it will sit above the lightning-quick ZR1X in the Corvette hierarchy. Turning The Corvette Up To Eleven Facebook: Khyzyl Saleem Facebook: Khyzyl Saleem Facebook: Khyzyl Saleem The C8-X follows a similar philosophy to the Ford Mustang GTD: take a proven American icon and dial everything up so it punches far above its usual class. Saleem’s version makes the Corvette’s stance wider and lower, with equally as dramatic aero, and plenty of exposed carbon fiber. The headlights are now two tiny bulbs mounted at the bottom of the front bumpers, and the thinner LED strokes serve as DRLs. The rear lights have been squashed thinner, resembling those of a pre-facelift sixth-gen Camaro. Judging by online reactions, many fans feel the concept addresses some of the styling criticisms aimed at the current C8. Despite the changes, it still clearly reads as a Corvette, just one that feels closer in spirit to exotic hypercars like the Ferrari 296. The C8 Is Already A Hypercar Killer Facebook: Khyzyl Saleem Facebook: Khyzyl Saleem Facebook: Khyzyl Saleem Corvettes have long been known for challenging far pricier machines, but the C8 generation has taken that idea further than before. In fact, the latest Corvette ZR1 recently beat a McLaren Senna around Virginia International Raceway, proving just how far it can punch above its weight class. On top of that, although its twin-turbo 5.5-liter V8 claims to produce 1,064 hp, HP Tuners managed to get 1,180 wheel horsepower just thanks to some downpipes and a tune. Not only did GM leave enough room for a redesigned body, but powertrain upgrades, too. A Corvette Hypercar Is Plausible Facebook: Khyzyl Saleem Facebook: Khyzyl Saleem Facebook: Khyzyl Saleem Digital car concepts are becoming more common by the day, especially as AI tools become more common in the design world. We have already seen AI-assisted ideas such as a Dodge Viper Shooting Brake spark enough interest to move toward real-world builds. Saleem’s approach ditches AI entirely; he only uses traditional 3D modeling and rendering. For now, the the_kyza's C8-X remains a digital pipedream, but if Ford's $300k+ Mustang GTD has taught us anything, it's that buyers are willing to pay a handsome premium for cars that are special enough. 17. It’s been around two years since the AUDI brand (stylized in all caps) was launched in China. Co-owned by Audi (the luxury brand we know well) and SAIC Motor, the AUDI’s vehicles are based on SAIC’s technology but have a unique design not shared with traditional Audis. They also don’t have the traditional four-ring logo. It was a curious branding exercise, and it seems as if Chinese customers haven’t warmed up to it, either. AUDI’s first car, the E5 Sportback, has failed to match the sales figures of rivals from Tesla and domestic Chinese brands in a market where EVs are immensely popular. Related: AUDI, Not Audi: A New EV Sub-Brand Prepares for Launch AUDI E5 Sportback Has Tech and Charging Issues Audi Data from Bloomberg Intelligence, reported by Auto News, shows that only 605 examples of the E5 Sportback were sold in China in January, despite it being crowned Car of the Year there. Between its launch in September and the end of December, 6,650 total units have been sold. A compact model, the E5 Sportback competes against EVs like the Tesla Model Y and Xiaomi YU7 in China, both of which are selling over 30,000 units monthly. Xiaomi is best-known as a smartphone brand but is a key player in the electric car segment in China. Right now, AUDI isn’t keeping up with either brand. A few issues with its technology and charging performance are holding the E5 back. Neo Shen, an engineer based in Shanghai, says his E5 Sportback’s infotainment system “is a total work-in-progress and full of bugs." Driver-assistance features that are too slow to respond and an air conditioning system that turns on each time the car goes on are other issues. He expressed these criticisms despite being a big fan of the E5’s design. The E5’s charging speeds are slower than some rivals’, too. It needs 15 minutes to add roughly 217 miles, which isn’t bad by U.S. standards, but Chinese customers are now accustomed to the very fastest charging speeds. The LS6 compact SUV from IM Motors, for instance, adds about 248 miles of range in 10 minutes. Related: Audi Wins China Car of the Year With an EV You Can’t Buy Elsewhere Why German Luxury Brands Are Struggling in China Audi In China, Audi’s overall sales fell by 5% to 617,514 units in 2025, relative to 164,942 sales in the United States. This underlines how crucial the Chinese market is for Audi—it’s by far the brand’s largest market. The AUDI sub-brand was an opportunity to capitalize on the popularity of EVs in China and cater to local tastes, but that hasn’t worked out. Beyond Audi, other German brands like Mercedes and BMWalso saw significant sales declines in China last year. “The brand equity of the German premium brands in China has disintegrated much faster than anyone expected,” said Matthias Schmidt, an automotive analyst based near Hamburg. “Consumers there are increasingly buying local brands, and there is reasonable concern that those sales will not come back.” Ultimately, the slow start for AUDI shows that German prestige is no longer a guarantee of success. Value for money, ultra-fast charging, and seamless software matter more to buyers in the world’s largest auto market. View the full article
  18. Stellantis' Surprise PerformerMoney-wise, Stellantis isn't having such a good time. It posted a $26.3 billion loss last year, marking the first time it has recorded losses since the company was formed in 2021. Contributing to that was its costly EV strategy and product planning realignment. That's despite being Europe's second-largest automaker behind the Volkswagen Auto Group. Fiat, Peugeot, and Jeep were the stars of the Stellantis range. However, the other brands in its stable either stayed flat or floundered. But one surprise here is Alfa Romeo, as it experienced growth of over 20 percent in 2025. Stellantis Growth During a Difficult TimeStellantis faced a lot of headwinds in the first half of 2025. Despite that, Alfa Romeo posted an increase of 20.1 percent in worldwide sales. Considering the brand sold fewer than 60,000 vehicles in 2024, that's a welcome bit of news for the Italian automaker. Granted, it's still way behind the Germans, but a gain is a gain. Alfa experienced the most growth in Asia, with sales up by 43.8 percent. That's thanks to strong sales in Japan, as well as the brand's relaunch in Taiwan and Malaysia. Side note, you'll be surprised how much the Japanese market holds Alfa in high regard. The company has also been absent in Southeast Asia for quite some time already, so its return to Asia is welcome news. It also made significant headway in Europe with growth of 31.1 percent in the Old Continent. Alfa Romeo reported an 80.1 percent increase in the UK, 41.9 percent in France, 20.7 percent in its home market of Italy, 20.5 percent in Germany, and 15.1 percent in Spain. Even the Middle Eastern and African markets had a good time last year, with sales up by 16.3 percent. Growth DriversIt comes as no surprise that it's the Junior that led the company's sales charts last year. Per the report, over 60,000 orders have been placed for the subcompact crossover formerly known as the Milano since its launch. More surprising is the fact that about 17 percent of Junior sales last year consisted of the electric version. The Tonale has also been a hit for Alfa, at least outside the U.S. It's the brand's second best-selling model, and sales are expected to grow further given that the compact crossover received a slew of updates towards the end of 2025. Perhaps it's fears of their discontinuation, but Giulia and Stelvio sales actually grew last year. There were no specific figures given, but Alfa did mention that 11 percent of those models were the Quadrofoglio, and that 13 percent consisted of the special Intensa series. With the Giulia and Stelvio confirmed beyond 2027, it's a good time to get these instant classics before they're gone for good. Alfa Romeo View the full article
  19. Happy 60th, CorollaIn November 1966, Toyota introduced a car that would be instrumental in changing its fortunes and turning it into the powerhouse it is today. That model is the humble Corolla, and it celebrates its 60th anniversary this year. 12 generations and over 50 million sales later, the Corolla remains one of Toyota's top-selling models. While the RAV4 has since overtaken it, it's still a hugely important car for the brand. We're expecting a new generation soon, but for now, it's time to celebrate. Toyota Special Models Coming Soon? For now, Toyota Japan isn't planning any events to commemorate its best-selling car ever, but it's safe to say there will be one. One can also expect a couple of special-edition models coming soon as the car's birthday approaches. Japanese auto website Creative311 reckons that's the case, too. According to the site, Toyota will make an announcement between spring and summer this year. In Japan, that's sometime during the second quarter of this year. No other details were released at the time of writing, but it's said special versions of the sedan, hatchback, and Touring (wagon) will be made. Toyota Recently UpdatedIn its home market, the Corolla recently received a slew of updates back in September 2025. All body styles and trims of the car now come with a factory-fitted dashcam, plus blind spot monitoring and safe exit assist are now standard in lower trim levels. No aesthetic or mechanical changes were made to the cars. But the big news here is in the powertrain department. All Japanese-market models were to be hybrid-only. The specs are virtually identical to the U.S. market model, meaning a 1.8-liter engine mated to two electric motors with a combined output of 138 hp. Hybrid all-wheel drive is also an option in Japan. Interestingly, the Chinese-market Corollas get more visible changes. It gets a Prius-like front end design, along with new wheel options available. It's not out in the country yet, but it's expected to appear later this year. Toyota What's Next for the Corolla?Back in October 2025, Toyota revealed a radical-looking Corolla Concept at that year's Japan Mobility Show. It was meant to show that the compact car was ready to take a new direction, one unlike anything we've seen before. It's possible that Toyota could reveal the car sometime this year, just in time for its 60th birthday. The Corolla continues to evolve to reach a new generation. The Corolla Cross's mid-2020 premiere is good proof of that, as it adapts to a market hungry for crossovers. It's a clever way of keeping the nameplate alive for more years to come, ensuring its legacy. 2026 Toyota Corolla Touring (Japanese Market View the full article

  21. New car prices have been rising every year since 2020 in the United States due to a combination of pandemic-induced supply chain disruptions, computer chip shortages, inflation, high demand, and increased production costs, among other factors. For the first time ever, average new car prices in the U.S. crossed the $50,000 threshold in late 2025, a 32% increase over 2020, when the average price of a new car was under $38,000. It's tough out there if you're a new car shopper, as even stuff that used to be pretty much irrelevant before, such as destination charges, can inflate the price of your vehicle by several thousand dollars. From Spare Change to Thousands of Dollars Brandon Bell/Getty Images According to a list compiled by Consumer Reports, these non-negotiable vehicle destination charges have increased significantly, with Detroit Three automakers demanding the highest such fees across the U.S. market. A series of trucks and SUVs from Ford, General Motors and Stellantis took nine of the top 10 most expensive destination charges. The only cars on the list are from Stellantis-owned Alfa Romeo (Giulia, Stelvio and Tonale), and they hold the No. 1 spot with a $3,250 destination charge. The second highest destination charge is for the Cadillac Escalade and Escalade iQ—$2,895—followed by the Chevy Silverado 1500, Silverado 2500HD/3500HD, Suburban and Tahoe with $2,795. These trucks and SUVs are all heavy vehicles, which should cost more to ship. But that doesn't explain the big differences in destination fees across automakers. The lowest destination fee $1,150, currently charged by Mercedes-Benz for all its vehicles sold in the United States. Interestingly, the 10 lowest destination fees are charged by foreign automakers. Why Did Destination Charges Outpace Inflation? Getty Images So why the big disparity? First of all, since advertised prices do not typically include destination, some automakers use the destination fee to "hide" the additional costs of the vehicle, Sam Fiorani, vice president of global vehicle forecasting at AutoForecast Solutions LLC, told the Detroit News. By inflating the destination fee, the base price, which is always advertised excluding destination, can look more attractive to the consumer. CR found in 2021 that destination fees often "far exceed the actual cost of transporting a vehicle," which suggests that automakers may use the charges to increase their margins. Another big question mark regarding destination charges is that they have been rising above the overall pace of inflation. The average vehicle destination fee in the U.S. has jumped 67% from $952 in 2015 to $1,592 in 2026, according to Edmunds data. And the increase during the past two years is also spectacular. In 2024, destination charges ranged from $995 to $2,095; now they span from $1,150 to $3,250, according to CR. What Is a Destination Charge? Getty Images Carmakers are required by the Automobile Information Disclosure Act of 1958 to disclose "the amount charged, if any, to such dealer for the transportation of such automobile to the location at which it is delivered to such dealer." According to manufacturers, destination charges cover the cost of transporting the vehicle, averaged across all corners of the country. Automakers have standardized those fees so that consumers see the same charge in the contiguous United States; that's why a buyer in Detroit pays the same fee as someone in California for the same vehicle. CR warns that buyers should seriously take destination fees into account. "Destination charges are now a major cost when buying a car. Be sure to look past the sticker price to understand average transaction prices in your area, destination charges, and taxes for budgeting," the consumer watchdog writes. The organization is calling for rules requiring automakers to include destination charges in their advertised and online prices, instead of burying them in footnotes. But until something is done about that, make sure to always read the footnotes. View the full article

  23. The tire industry has advanced a lot technologically since the pneumatic rubber tire was invented in the late 19th century, even though the basic concept of an air-filled tire has remained vastly the same. Key advancements along the way include tubeless technology that replaced the inner tube, radial construction that replaced old bias-ply tires, synthetic rubber and compounding that reduced reliance on natural rubber, run-flat tires, and airless tires, to name only the most important developments. A Major Technological Breakthrough for the Tire Industry Nokian Tyres You can now add another technological breakthrough for the tire industry, courtesy of Finnish manufacturer Nokian Tyres. The company that invented the winter tire in 1934 has launched the Hakkapeliitta 01, billed as "the world's first winter tire with on-demand grip." In plain English, it's the first production studded winter tire that automatically adjusts to changes in temperature by extending or retracting its studs. Basically, this eliminates the need to compromise between superior ice grip and low road wear, as the new tire offers the best of both worlds: maximum grip on ice-covered roads, and minimum road wear on clear roads. This is a very significant development that Nokian Tyres has chased for more than a decade and now it finally managed to make it happen. The new studded tire will also help improve safety and convenience for many drivers during winter, as they won't have to fit studded tires to their cars when the road is covered with ice, only to remove them once the road is cleared. The tire will adapt to the road conditions automatically for them. So How Does It Work?So how exactly does the Nokian Hakkapeliitta 01 winter tire work? As temperatures change, the studs, which have been developed specifically for this tire, adjust automatically between on and off modes. In cold temperatures, the studs engage for instant traction, while in milder conditions they disengage for smooth driving and accurate handling. Nokian says it has worked on this technology since 2014, when it introduced a winter tire concept featuring retractable studs. Since then, its engineers have been working around the clock to make the technology a reality, testing thousands of prototype tires in a wide array of conditions, from indoor labs and urban areas to the company's Arctic test center in Ivalo, Finland, and Hakka Ring test facility in Spain. "The new Nokian Tyres Hakkapeliitta 01 represents one of our company's biggest innovations since we introduced the first winter tire more than 90 years ago," said Nokian Tyres President and CEO Paolo Pompei. "This new winter tire achieves what was previously thought impossible: a studded tire that responds to temperature changes to deliver ultimate safety while protecting the road." Arriving This Autumn in North America Nokian Tyres The new studded winter tire is designed for passenger cars, crossovers and sports utility vehicles, and it is certified with the Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake and Ice Grip symbols. Nokian claims the new model reduces road wear by up to 30% compared to its predecessor, while ice grip improves by up to 10% and wet grip by up to 5%. At the same time, the Hakkapeliitta 01 is said to reduce noise levels by as much as one decibel. The tire's tread compound consists partly of renewable materials, such as natural rubber, bio resin and bio-based oils, including materials derived from pine resin and canola oil. The new studded winter tire will be available to consumers this autumn, with the main markets targeted by Nokian being the Nordic countries and North America. Prices haven't been announced yet. 24. Subaru’s February HeroSubaru reported U.S. sales of 45,113 vehicles in February 2026, an 8.2-percent decline from the same period last year. However, it wasn’t all bad news, as the Forester recorded its best February sales ever, with 17,919 units sold — up 24.9 percent from February 2025. The Forester — a direct rival to the Toyota RAV4 — was one of only two Subaru models to post a sales increase last month. It is available with a hybrid powertrain, allowing it to capitalize on the strong demand for hybrid vehicles in the U.S. The system pairs a 2.5-liter boxer four-cylinder engine with a Toyota-sourced hybrid setup, producing a combined output of 194 horsepower. Supporting the Forester’s strong sales last month were the Crosstrek and Outback, which sold 11,480 and 8,787 units, respectively. Kristen Brown The Lineup’s Rough PatchThe only other model to register a sales increase was the BRZ, which recorded a 13.5-percent year-over-year gain. However, the improvement may not be as impressive as it sounds. The sports car sold just 277 units last month — only 33 more than in the same month in 2025. As for the rest of the lineup, most models recorded a dip in sales. Declines in sedan and hatchback models such as the WRX and Legacy — the latter of which ended U.S. production in September 2025 — are not surprising, given the market’s preference for crossovers and SUVs. Moreover, the current-generation WRX lacks a proper STI variant, likely making it less appealing for enthusiasts. One of Subaru’s latest strategies in the U.S. includes introducing two new EVs — the Uncharted and Trailseeker — both of which will arrive in spring 2026. The Uncharted will serve as the brand’s entry-level EV, occupying the same market space as its platform mate, the electric Toyota C-HR, while the Trailseeker will slot above the Solterra, which sold 733 units last month — down 20.8 percent compared with February 2025. Chase Bierenkoven Subaru Stays OptimisticIn addition to these two new EVs, Subaru noted that deliveries of the all-new 2026 Outback to retailers are ongoing, despite challenging winter storm conditions. The model features a full redesign and next-generation technologies, including a new 12.1-inch high-resolution multimedia display. Jeff Walters, president and COO of Subaru of America, believes the brand’s effort to diversify its lineup should help improve its sales. In a press release, he said, “Our versatile lineup is designed to meet a wide range of budgets and needs – from daily commutes, to carpools, to weekends spent accessing the outdoors. With that combination of value and dependability, we’re well-positioned to build momentum in the months ahead.” Elijah Nicholson-Messmer View the 3 images of this gallery on the original article View the full article
  25. A New Era for Audi RSLike it or not, electrified performance is here to stay. As much as we want high-revving naturally aspirated engines, modern regulations make it a tough ask for automakers. But if it's any consolation, performance hybrids are keeping engines alive, giving us pretty impressive performance stats...and shocking curb weights. Taking a page from BMW and Mercedes-Benz, Audi has entered the plug-in hybrid performance arena with the all-new RS 5. It's the company's first model of its kind, and there's a lot riding on its (very) broad shoulders. Audi Six or NothingThe first two generations of the RS 4 and RS 5 featured wonderful naturally aspirated V8s. But by the third generation, that's been replaced by a 2.9-liter V6. It's punchy, for sure, but it's hard to beat the symphony provided by an eight-cylinder. At least the new plug-in hybrid version didn't get downsized even further with a four-cylinder. Speaking to Edmunds, Audi Sport managing director Rolf Michl said that a boosted four-cylinder plug-in hybrid configuration wasn't even on the cards. When asked if the company even considered it in the first place, Michl simply said "not for a single second." But before you think Audi is firing potshots at AMG, the company actually admired its competitor's bold decision. "[AMG] has fascinating products, and the [four-cylinder] C 63 drives really well ... the car is amazing, honestly. We were impressed by the technology that was implemented there, [but] at the end, between a technological solution and the customer’s decision, sometimes there is a bit of a gap. You have to listen to the customer, and obviously, it is a step-by-step approach," said Michl. Audi A Non-Hybrid was ConsideredAudi had intended to use the 2.9-liter V6 from the start, but what's surprising here is that the brand actually experimented with a non-hybrid version. However, the end product still tipped the scales close to 5,000 lbs. In the end, the addition of the plug-in hybrid system was chosen because of the close weight difference. Another reason Audi chose a hybrid system is regulations. It would've been challenging for the company to make the twin-turbo V6 meet emissions standards without any electrification. Under its hood was a 2.7-liter twin-turbo V6 sourced from S4 and uprated to 375 hp and 325 lb-ft of torque. Of course, it had no electric assist whatsoever, but the link is there. It's unlikely that we'll see a V8 under the hood of the RS 5 in the future. For that, we'll have to wait for the next-generation RS 6, and that one's likely to get plug-in hybrid tech as well.
